Seems to really care about the students. Young, but has some experience worth drawing from. Involves class in discussion and activities. Lots of energy-- you may need a latte to keep up with him some mornings.

I loved this class, but it was also overwhelming because i took it for three hours straight. He taught me so much and really got me hooked to the social work area. I would however not recommend taking the class for three hours straight because he packs so MUCH learning that makes your head explode. Plus, imagine writing notes for THREE hours-sucks

Mick's class is incredible. He always keeps us thinking. I wasn't sure if I was going to like the class as much as my others, but it's my favorite! I was afraid because I heard he was strict, but it's well worth it.

Great teacher but you need to do your work. He gave two pop quizzes from the reading. Three essays... study guides for the midterm and final.

Great subject, great class. Mick is really easy to understand and has an answer for every question. His knowledge is great. I don't understand why some people complain about his attitude. He does have very specific rules, but they're easy enough to follow. Grow up, people. This is college. Mick is a great teacher.

He's a great teacher that knows so much! It definitely is a class where you need to work hard, but it's fun, and totally worth it. He helps you out when you ask. Don't take the class if you'r a slaker, he can smell those.

Mick was great. Very charming and kind of funny - he really enjoys class discussions and seeing what students can offer. His assignments are a little challenging, but fun nonetheless. Take Human Sexuality with him - it'll be worth your time.

He's strict, but knows what's up. You definitely can't slack in this class. It's challenging, but hey, welcome to college kiddies! Group activities were cool. And he is for sure a hot one.

Mick is a very good teacher. He can handle any question and he makes it clear he values people's opinions. He doesn't tolerate slackers and he has specific rules that must be followed. If you want to slide through, he's not the guy. But if you want a quality class, his classroom's the place to be.

Mick is definitely one of my favorite teachers. He makes class fun & I don't really get why so many people think he's such a hard grader. If you read the text, take notes, and follow istructions on the assignments, you should be fine. He is very knowledgable, gives many opportunities for class discussion, and will answer any questions clearly and completely. If he doesn't know the exact answer to a question, he'll tell you so. He is strict with due dates and attendance so make sure to be on time

Looking at the previous comments, it should be clear who likes him and who doesn't. Don't listen to raters who type in ALL CAPS and don't know how to spell "advice." Mick is a very good teacher. There's no doubt he has specific expectations, but people who have a problem with that need to join the real world. He's smart and helps anyone who asks.

Mick is a very hard teacher with high standards and expectations. If you need interaction, DO NOT take this class on line! Way too much lag in getting grades. Make sure you have people proof your papers. He can come across as arrogant and I'm not sure he actually values other opinions. I don't mind being challenged, but should have taken in class.

Mick has very high standards. If you want an easy class, this is NOT for you. His Human Sexuality class is a challenge but very informative and can also be fun. I didn't use the book and got along fine taking notes. Grammar is v. important!

I am not sure why we even take notes. Half of the things that we write down are pointless because alot of it is not even on the test. Most of the test material comes from the book even if we did not cover it. Extremely hard grader. He is very nice in class, but not at all when it comes to grading anything.

Very hard grader, like someone said he is a grammar Nazi.He definitely disregards opinions.He can come of as very arrogant and like I said before its his way or no one's way. He nip picks at everything you say. If you want a teacher that is very technical with everything you do go for it, but I did not like him.

I was worried after reading some comments on here, but Mick is nice, encouraging, and helpful. He sat down with me to go over my papers before they were due when I asked. He challenged me to do better than I ever knew I could do, and I'm super proud of myself. Now I know I want to be a social worker.

Mick is a great teacher! as long as you read assignments and show up for class, it's such a wonderful class. if you want to go into social work, he'll teach you everything you need to know. it's been an absolute privilege to be in his class and he's willing to help with anything he can. I'd recommend him to everyone

Mick is so knowledgeable and super supportive of everyone in class. He expects you to do ur part,put in your work and all that, like any teacher, and he does have hi standards for writing. But it's college! I'm not paying for high school part 2. He's smart, he's friendly, and he really cares. He doesn't judge and he wants me to do well.

Mr. Cullen knows what he's doing. He pushes ppl to give there best effort because he wants ppl to be ready to be counselers themselves. Its not an easy job so it makes sense that class is challegning. He is tough of writing but i still really liked his class, and if you study the study guides, youll do fine on his tests too.

Class is not for anyone not thinking about becoming a social worker. If you are taking it just to see what it is like You WILL hate it. This is a Community College, but a professor is a professor no matter where they are. Be preped for taking notes, and reading the book. He preps students to be in the field so Grading is at prof level. great prof.

Mick is a HARD grader. I prefer a "ball-buster" of a teacher and that is exactly what he is. He seems easy going and very informative but when it comes to tests and essays come prepared! I enjoy his teaching method and interaction with us as students immensely.

I LOVE THIS DUDE! I wish he was my dad. Honestly he has made such an impact on me, that there is not enough thanks to give. He teaches a hard class, so of course his tests and assignments are going to be challenging. He grades hard because you could have someones life in your hands and you can't mess up. He truly is an awesome man.

I had Mick for 3 different classes because he was an excellent professor. He has high expectations but so does the real world. Right attitude and interest in the subject matter will help. I have since gone on to get a few degrees and Mick is still 1 of my top 3 prof I've had of my 100+college professors. He was fun, especially SWK124 1st ever class

Do not be deterred by any of the overly critical reviews listed here. Some individuals simply want to protect their ego by placing blame on the professor instead of themselves. Professor Cullen is an outstanding teacher who has a deep understanding of drugs and drug addiction. I found his lectures and expectations for the class to be very clear.

Mick Cullen is an extraordinary professor with an admirable passion for drug addiction, and I don't think there is a better professor to teach the lectures. I learned truly valuable information from taking this course. His Drugs & Society class was quite honestly the most interesting and insightful I've ever had. I would definitely take him again.

I really enjoyed my classes with Professor Cullen. Not only is he refreshing to listen to, but it's apparent he really knows what he's talking about. He offered extra credit a few times throughout the semester for the whole class, not just one or two people. This class, unlike his social work class, I felt didn't need the textbook as much.

Very pleased to have taken this class with Professor Cullen. Smart, and really interesting to listen to. I got a lot out of this semester. Definitely felt like the book was really important to have, as some of the stuff talked about in the lecture was hard to understand and/or briefly gone over. Tests are tough, but you'll pass if you study!

I don't understand why everyone is complaining?! He is an amazing professor and his lectures are great! His tests are not that hard! Follow the study guide, take good notes, and actually read the book! I will say he is a tough grader when it comes to the papers. I recommend going to the writing center! I will be taking another one of his classes!

This class was easy. If you read his rubrics and his syllabus for the papers, you probably won't have an issue. Make sure you check your papers to make sure they're APA format. He knows his stuff. Not really sure why people think he's a hard grader, I think it's that they didn't follow the rubrics and prompts. He tells you EXACTLY what he wants!

I really enjoyed having Mick as a professor. He is passionate about the subject and class was always interesting. Yes you have to work for an A which is easy if you put the time into your work. Very straightforward class would take another class of his in a heartbeat.

I enjoyed this professor and this class. He is obviously knowledgeable in the area of social work and has experience in the field. He is clear about expectations and is open to questions about assignments. He is a tough grader, but I think his corrections were always warranted. If you're lazy, do not take this class. He is an excellent teacher with lots of great information. If you skip more than one class, you're basically digging yourself a hole. Follow the rubric, participate, show up on time and you will succeed.

Mick is a great professor with experience in the field. He does grade 'tough', but he gave clear rubrics and study guides. Follow APA, the rubrics, and the syllabus and you can do well. This class takes a lot of effort. I can see that he puts in the time to respond to papers, and he is easy to approach with questions. I loved class discussions!

Cullen is great professor, with a lot of experience in the social work profession. Although, he grades very tough, and the tests aren't easy. You must be ready to work hard.

He is an amazing professor. If you are interested in the content, the class is very intriguing and you look forward to going to class. Cullen is well educated about what he is teaching. He does have 4 papers a semester, as long as you know APA format, follow the exact instructions, and be thourough, youll do fine. Class discussions are the best.

Great teacher! Mick really made the class interesting. If you work hard you will pass, read the textbook, pay attention in class, and study there's extra credit as well! There's a few papers but if you read thoroughly what is required and actually take the time to write your papers you will do fine.

I think he is a great teacher! His human sexuality class was very informative and fun! It is quite test & paper heavy so be prepared to spend enough time studying and writing those papers. He can be a tough grader, but the feedback he gives is fair. Also, if you can take his classes in person, I would recommend that instead of online, its easier.

The expectations are high but its a good thing. There are 4 main papers & its crucial you know what you are talking about & you do NOT procrastinate. Gives great feedback & constructive criticism but it will only help you improve & become more knowledgeable! This class helped me realize this path is for me! Have to work hard but its worth it!!!

Mick taught the most academically rigorous and difficult class I have ever taken, however it was a real breakthrough for me because it solidified my decision to pursue social work. This is a HARD class, and if you are absent you WILL fail. I loved his intro to social work so much but if you're only doing it for the credit CHOOSE A DIFFERENT TEACHER

The material is amazing. I only wish I had taken this class in person. I think if I had the material with good lecture, I would have achieved a higher grade. The class is a heavy work load and it can be overwhelming. If you take this class, take it seriously. This isnt just an easy elective credit!! You have to put the work in!!

If you're taking this as an elective, don't. If it's mandatory, take it w/ him. a great teacher overall. you must attend class or you'll miss a lot. lots of homework and papers, reading extra books aside of the workload. must take this class seriously, by far was the toughest class ive had. grading is particular but gives feedback, hes accessible

I'm confident that everyone giving Mick a 1 took the class as an elective. He knows if you are engaged in the class and will treat you as such, and. My only gripe with him is sometimes he can be slow with grades, but that's excused with the wonderful class experience I had! He is an excellent professor, take him if you plan on going into the field.

Professor Cullen is an excellent educator. The expectations are clearly laid out, lectures are quick and relevant, papers are more than reasonable, and discussions are intuitive. Being in class empowered me as a reader. There are a handful of assigned readings and quizzes but again, not bad. I do wish more example papers were provided.

Mick is such an amazing professor. He has you do a group project and is very paper-heavy but I enjoyed his teaching method. He uses a textbook that he co-wrote with his brother and I found it to be very informational. Highly recommend his class to anyone! A fantastic class for social work or psych majors. I learned so much about the field and the career possibilities for social workers. The group project taught me so much about the mental health facility system and it was great to tour a facility. Mick is extremely thoughtful and empathetic. I can't recommend taking this class with him enough.

Most of these reviews seem overblown, I agree Mick is a tough grader (although he gave me As and Bs on even my worst papers) and slow to grade. He also did have a few comments that could be seen as judgemental. On the other hand, he was a funny and helpful teacher. I reccomend his class but I say is be prepared to write papers, papers, papers!

Professor Cullen runs a challenging but rewarding SWK121 course. While the workload is heavy, his thorough feedback helps improve your writing skills. unstuck study was a lifesaver for exam prep. Take it seriously, but you'll gain valuable insights into social work.

Professor Mick Cullen is one of the best professors. As I was reading the past negative comments about him, I couldn't disagree more. He will continuously try to help you achieve your goal and is always willing to work with you. He does require us to write a few papers, but I thought they were quite easy to write if you actually read/take notes.
