If you need guidance with writing a script I highly recommend you take a class with him. He knows what he is doing and is well aware of what he is talking about. Anyone who takes his class will end up admiring and respecting him. I sure do.
I cant believe he is teaching at a community college. He is amazing! Very knowledgable about the industry. Also has a great sense of humor. If you need help on your script take his class.
Amazing! He is a wonderful teacher. Take him!
He is a very intelligent (yet easy to understand) teacher. He is generous with his time and offers his help in any way possible. What an inspiration! I feel like I have a chance!
my experience in this class was awful. I got 2 A's and 1 B on the tests and got a C in the class because he failed to explain the correct script format, he did not emphasize how important this was until we turned in the script. he also has told us that movies not about making art, but about making money. Never got feedback on the actual story.
Great course. Great teacher. He changed the way I look at movies and he definitely helped me understand how to write better scripts. I was disappointed in some people in the class. All they did was complain. Mr. Curran said tests were not important, but the scripts were. The formats were in a packet at the bookstore, but some people didn't buy it.
I had another teacher for 17A and didn't get what this class offered. Mr. Curran is a great teacher and a wonderful person. I've taken courses at USC, UCLA, Northridge and several WGA-sanctioned courses and no one ever made understanding story easier -- or made the class more fun. I've written two scripts already with him. I'm working on a third.
This was the best course I have ever taken. Mr. Curran explained how to learn and taught me how to schedule my time, read my textbooks, take notes and even write a paper. If I had known this stuff the first time I went to college, I would've stayed and graduated top of my class. He really helped me understand how to get the most out of a class.
I agree he is definetely smart, but I think he could try to be more clear when it comes to giving directions, you have to memorize the text in order to get A's on the test, plus he's the kind of teacher that will pick his favorites from the beggining.
I had never had Prof. Curran before and judging from what other students had written about him, I figured he was smart and very good at what he does, but I was unprepared for his humor, his kindness and his devotion to student needs. If it appears he has favorites, it's because he takes extra time to help those who ask for it.
I had a different instructor for Telcom 17 and as much as I enjoyed that class, this class was much more informative. Prof. Curran is knowledgable and fun and he created a great clas dynamic. We all learned a lot of scriptwriting and a lot about the movie busines.
This was the best course I've taken in ten years. And Prof. Curran is the best prof I've ever had. I've taken courses with David Freeman, John Truby and Robert McKee. All were excellent, but they pale in comparison to this course. I don't understand why he teaches at PCC and not USC, UCLA or NYU. Definitely worth your time.
This guy is great. The odd thing is I kinda already knew what I was doing as far as format; though after looking over the format guide from the bookstore I'm pretty solid now. Got an A on the final. The strange thing though is at times, it felt more like a philo class to me. I learned more about my own life than about writing.I got more than expected
Prof. Curran is an outstanding addition to the College. I am constantly surprised by the depth of his knowledge and the understanding of character, story, and writing devices he possesses. He is a diamond among diamonds. Take him if you can.

I use this site to check out profs. I was concerned because some students thought Prof. Curran was unfair. I have found their comments inaccurate. If any, Prof. Curran is fair. He is also honest, unbelievably brilliant, and talented, and funny. The "industry" people in the class affirm he is accurate, fair and very gifted. I HIGHLY recommend him.
I highly recommend this professor. He's a working professional and he really knows his stuff. I took 17A with another teacher who was very nice, but didn't know anywhere as much as Professor Curran. The added bonus is Prof. Curran is nice. He's very smart, and very funny. You'll enjoy the class, make new friends and learn a lot.
I highly highly recommend Mick Curran's Telcom 17A And 17B writing classes . He is a brilliant professor and and his lectures has are very interesting and engaging. He knows just about everything that there is to know about writing for Film and Television. He is an industry professional and is one of Hollywood's top Writers. A must take clas
One should be able to transfer units from Mick Curran's 17A and B classes to schools like USC, and immediately qualify for a degree in film. Like many here, I learned a wealth about screenwriting...but even more about my own life. A word about my 'easiness' rating - Mick is easy, the craft of writing is hard. All Mick asks , though,is that you try.
It's rare but very appreciated when you find a professor who takes the time to truly make you better. Professor Mick stays after class to talk to you one on one to smooth out any kinks you may have; not only giving constructive criticism but also helpful alternatives. Writer or not this class is essential for anyone interested in film.
Amazing class. Not only was I completely unprepared for the highest level of technical information about writing and stories and character, but there is a strong foundation of human insight and humor that Prof. Curran brings to the class, I received far more than I ever expected. Great prof. Great Class. I highly recommend Mick Curran.
I didn't take the first course with Prof. Curran so I thought I understood what scriptwriting was about. This has beena real thrill ride in ever ywa. Not only have I learned an amazing amount of knowledge, but I have learned even more about life, work, and myself. Talk about insights. Prof. Curran is smart, funny, caring, and charming. Great class.
I heard from a friend in the biz that I could save tons of money and learn lots of secrets about writing if I took Mick Curran's scriptwriting course at PCC. Well, since I live in Santa Monica, it was a hard decision because of the long commute to Pasadena. Looking back, it was the best decision I've ever made. I am learning so much. Great class.
First time user of this service, but I agree with everything that's been written about Prof. Curran. Great teacher, has brilliant and funny insights, nice guy, too. If you get the chance, take him. It's truly worth the experience.
Mick is just insightful and full of information. You will literally fill up tons of notebooks and take a look back at all your work and see where you went wrong. Do yourself a favor and take the class if you're interested in writing, but be prepared to change things that you wouldn't consider changing, and accept critique. All around great class
If you want to learn about script writing then you should sign up for this class immediately. Mick is choked full of information that some prestigious college prof. would never teach, but Mick understands that he can't live forever and someone needs to take over. He presents so much insightful info and makes class fun. Plus, a movie every class mee
Mick Curran is one of the best professors I've ever had. That's saying a lot since I have two Master's degrees. He makes the screenwriting program work. I learned a tremendous amount in his class. I hope the program continues to grow under his tutelage.
Best prof I've had so far. A working professional writer who opens up the film and TV worlds so you can understand what makes a script good, how a script (and story) are constructed, how to get viewers emotionally involved in the story, how to market your scripts, and what things to avoid. I've filled three notebooks with solid advice.
I give Mr. Curran the highest rating possible. If you're interested in writing for film or tv, you should take him. There are other instructors, but none have worked in the business and they simply don't have his encyclopedic knowledge of what makes stories work. I filled four notebooks and I thought I knew it all after ten years selling scripts.
This is the best way to start the new year -- giving praise where it's due. PCC doesn't really know what a treasure they have in Prof. Mick Curran. This class he teaches is unlike any writing or scriptwriting class I have ever taken. It is so much better and more informative, that to miss a chance to study with him will hurt your career. He's great
Mick Curran mesmerizes a class with his enthusiasm, knowledge, and caring. Not only is he a brilliant teacher, he spends time with virtually everyone's concept to make it into a better script. take him -- he's better than anyone you'll ever find.
Amazing class. Fun, yet challenging. Curran is the Real Thing when it comes to writers. You'll enjoy him. He's very knowledgeable and yet completely willing to share the secrets of the trade. Everyone loves him. He's smart, funny, friendly, kind, and open. A class doesn't get any better. Take him.
This is the best, most informative class in writing I have ever attended or even heard of. Mick Curran opens your eyes to the craft and business of writing in a way that will change your life. I've learned more in a few weeks with him than a decade of other film courses, screenwriting books and seminars. He's also a great guy. Very smart and funny
Professor Curran really knows his stuff!!!!!
If you want to write scripts, or even if you're already selling scripts, you still want to take this class with Mick Curran. He breaks down scripts and movies in ways unimaginably profitable to a writer. You will learn to see stories in new ways, characters in fascinating ways, and your career in a more assured way. Believe the hype: he's a genius.
Mos def one of the best at PCC. Curran is brilliant, in my humble opinion. He's very energetic, and knows this stuff inside and out, backwards and forwards. Curran has a wealth of knowledge, and is more than happy to let it flow if you just ask.
Prof. Curran has forgotten more about writing than 99% of the people in Hollywood have ever known. His insights are brilliant. His approach is fun. he simply unpacks the most complex ideas in the most understandable fashion. His legend is spreading. Kids from SC and UCLA film schools have started attending his classes.
Amazing. I had no idea I would be learning so much. I've read a number of books and even taken a few other film and writing classes, but nothing compares to this. Mick Curran is an amazing dude. He has this abiity to figure out almost instantly what makes a story right or wrong. he also helps you understand how to "craft" your characters.
Who would have ever thought that a tiny school such as Pasadena City College would have a world-class screenwriting class? I didn't, but the buzz around the studio was that this was the best course around -- and now I agreee. Mick Curran is fine fellow, competent and capable, kind and dedicated. His way is the fastest way to becoming a pro.
I've taken courses with dozens of different writers and writing teachers. None comes even remotely close to being as lucid or knowledgeable as Mick Curran. I have purchased a dozen books and take about ten classes with famous award-winning writers and not one of them can break down a story and explain how to write a script like Mick.
Mick is a marvel. Read his scripts and you wonder why Hollywood hasn't embraced him as a genius. Sit in his class and you will learn so much about writing and human nature that you will never be the same. More than a teacher, more than a professor, Mick is a world-class mentor. If you want to be in the entertainment industry, take him. He rocks.
I had a different teacher for the first class of scriptwriting. I don't want to dismiss that class, but Mr. Curran provides so much more information and shows so much more interest in every student. I think I'm beginning to understand scriptwriting, moviemaking, and the TV and film industries for the first time. Take this class. You won't be sorry.
I learned far more than I ever imagined I would. Not only about scriptwriting, films, TV and storytelling, but also life. I understand what my counselor has been trying to get me to see.
Extremely good coures. Great professor-- lots of knowledge, lots of energy. Incredible insights. I never knew movies were "smuggling" ideas to the audience. Now that prof. Curran's repeatedly demonstrated how it's done, I see it all the time. This was one of my most favorite classes of all time. prof. Curran is the best.
When I signed up this past spring, it was because I had heard so many good things about this teacher. Now I know they're true. great guy. Great professor. Incredible writer who's funny, too. I learned so much more than I ever thought possible. Even professional writers show up in class and ask for help. take him, you'll agree.
I didn't know what to expect. Lots of students praised Prof. Curran, but others said it was a hard course. I took it and did well. Prof. Curran is easygoing and very smart. He's kind, too, as others have said. But the class is not hard. In fact. prof. Curran makes it easy to learn. It's just that scriptwriting itself is hard, not the class.
When you take Mick Curran's course, you have a choice to either get with it or sit back. The people who go for it all end up as part of a "happy tribe". Mick opens the doors to the industry. Others who miss class or work on scripts just don't get it. THIS is the best course of its kind anywhere. Take Mick and you'll be better for it. I know I am.
Take this class. You will learn so much. Prof. Mick is a cool due, and the girls seem to think he's hot, but I think it's more than looks. It's his charm, and humor, and caring. He's likeable and down-to-earth. What's more, he is very smart and very knowledgeable and he shares that information generously. Take him. It's fun and interesting.
Mick Curran is a cool DUDE. (I don't know what the previous blogger was smoking.) No, really. I've taken script courses at several colleges and a few at extension classes -- Mick's is the best because: 1) Mick actually writes, 2) He knows all the tricks of the trade, and 3) He's willing to patiently reveal them to you. There's no greater class.
Mick Curran is the best. I don't know if anything more needs to be written. A genius who's funny and kind. If you want to be a writer (of anything): take him! If you wish to be a film or TV director or producer or editor or actor: take him! If you just need a class: take him! He will change you for the better. Take him! His class is like a party.
Great class. Lots and lots of good information. Funny and clear presentation. Out of all of my classes, this one class makes everything worthwhile. I'm learning so much.
I am a university professor, and sitting in on Prof. Curran's classes has been a privilege. He's very entertaining and personable. His lectures are first-rate drama in themselves, and the class is overwhelmed with clear, well thought-out expertise on what makes stories and scripts work. Mick Curran is beyond excellent. Take him.
I have a BA and a MA in Film production at a great southern California university. (It's reputation is among the best -- f not THE best -- in the world.) yet, I have taken Mick Curran's scriptwriting courses because he is so brilliant, the material he teaches so appropriate that I never received anything like it at my alma mater. I recommend it.
My friends told me to take Prof. Curran and I'm glad I did. I have learned so much. I can look at a film now and see how it was constructed as a story. I understand characters now, too. Great class. I HIGHLY recommend him and the class to anyone.
I really enjoy this class. I love film and I think Prof. Curran understand film and TV so well that we all get the benefit of his knowledge. He's also very funny, and very, very helpful. You won't find a better teacher.
I love this class! I love Professor Curran's style and all the information he offers so generously. This is my favorite class and favorite teacher of all time. If you have any ambition to write or work in the TV or film business, take his class. He's the real thing.
I agree with the last comments. Prof. Curran is amazing. He's so funny that I laugh all the while I'm learning. He is generous with his knowledge and information. He really wants the students to learn. He's also smart and clever. It's worth it to take his class -- even if you never thought of writing a script.
I have never felt like a teacher was my friend. Even though he's as old as my father, Prof. Curran is approachable and open -- like a friend. He's also very smart and very, very good at making difficult things understandable. I have learned so much this semester. He's helped me become a better writer, but he's also helped me become a better person.
I've taken scriptwriting courses and seminars and read dozens of books. Nothing compares to the overview and detailed information that Prof. Curran provides. I HIGHLY recommend this class to anyone who wants to work in film or tv. Quite simply there is no one like him and nothing as informative or life-changing as this course. Thumbs way up!
I really learned a lot this semester in this class. I filled two notebooks and probably could've taken down more information. Extremely knowledgeable teacher. Very smart and very funny. You laugh while you learn. And you learn how the business works and how to write scripts that mean something and won't be passed over.
Amazing! You learn so much, breaks down every movie watched during class. If you any interest in writing for films, take his class. Gives a lot of useful feedback on scripts to make you a better writer. He does this for a living, he knows what he is talking about.
Excellent way to teach the subject and his inspirational spirit is awesome! I entered his class a little shy and left with great courage, feeling assured of the advantages of writing for film and prepared to use everything I learned in such a wonderful and informative class. I would like to state that there is nothing better to do in a Saturday
Very passionate on in the field. He's not only very informative about the business aspect of screenwriting, but also teaches how to make great meaningful and artistic scripts. A great guy who only wants to help and see his students be successful.
Mr. Curran is a passionate and exuberant teacher with a lot to say. Script writing is his life and he wouldn't have it any other way. The class is supposed to be 3 hours long once a week, but he keeps you for about 5 hours. Be prepared to devote most your day to him. He's a really nice guy and fun to talk to just don't plan on getting out early.
The best advice I can give any writer (or wanna be writer) is to take Mick Curran. I've been around the block, so to speak, and he provides the best presentation of what screenwriting is and how to do of anyone I've ever met, taken, or read. He's that good. You'll get "secrets" that pros rarely share. And he makes learning fun. Take him and see.
If you want to learn screenwriting, this class is a MUST. Mick shatters the mystique of screenwriting by revealing the structure common to good movies. He generously reveals the professional screenwriter's approach, emphasizing presentation as much as structure. His classes are gold and should be required for beginning writers. Sign up now!
Professor Curran is the funniest teacher I've ever had. It was like he was doing a stand-up routine while lecturing and providing lots and lots of facts, but in the most fascinating way. This is a great class. I love every minute of it.
With Prof. Curran's TVR17A class, I was able to grasp the structure of scriptwriting. It's the 17B class that was crucial in helping reinforce the concepts and get me well on my way in writing my script. I feel both the 17A and 17B classes are essential for anyone who is serious about becoming a working script writer. I loved the this class!
When you read the other comments, you get a sense of how good Mick Curran is at teaching, but only a sense. Being in his classes is a theatrical experience. He knows writing. Really knows the ins and outs. he knows the gTV and movie business. And he tells you step-by-step what, why, and how. I've read all the books, taken classes. Mick is the best.
Coolest class ever. Coolest teacher ever. You'll learn more than from any other course or book or internship. Take Prof. Curran, you'll never regret it. He'll make you into a great writer.
Extremely experienced, knowledgeable, passionate, and wise not just about the film industry, but also how to teach it. He really wants to change the business, and it shows. This course has accelerated my learning curve tremendously, and opened new doors. He treats students in a way that builds confidence, and makes you want to push yourself.
I had a great time in this class. Prof. Curran is a renown writer and world-class teacher. I learned more than I can fathom at this point. This might be the greatest class I've ever taken -- and I have two B.A.s and a Masters in Business Admin.
It's clear Mick Curran is a favorite and there's reasons why: he's smart, funny, energetic, caring, incredibly gifted, insightful, and lots more. Best class I've ever taken and probably will ever take. He inspires and builds your confidence with every class. And every class is filled with secrets of professional writers and directors. Take him.
Mick Curran is a gift to young screenwriters looking to develop a craft. If you're a beginner, he'll teach you the basics. If you're experienced, he'll show you the road to mastery. He knows his business and joyously, generously shares it. Great insights. Fantastic and unique presentation. A truly great class.
Mick Curran may be easy-going, cheerful and humorous but he teaches with a seriousness and passion that is rare in professors. He KNOWS exactly what he's talking about and he holds nothing back from his students. I learned so much from his class and grew a bit. I'm not going to forget Mick ever. He's that awesome!
Absolutely great course taught by a consummate professional. Mick Curran makes this course work. His humor and encyclopedic knowledge of the business, film and TV writing, and the secret crafts for professional writers is awe-inspiring. Best course I have ever taken. My HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION to take Mick if you want to learn screenwriting.
Excellent instructor and an exceptional course. Mick Curran is extremly knowledgable about the TV and flim industry and has desined a course to catapult an aspiring screen writer to a level that would take years to acheve otherwise. His years of experience in the business show, and his up-beat commical approach to teaching makes it fun to learn
Chuck Norris wanted to write screenplays-- so he took Curran's class. All Chuck Norris jokes aside, take his class! After the semester you will have undoubtedly a greater knowledge of films and screenplays. Stop reading the comments and just add already.
This is my favorite class of all time. And Prof. Curran is my favorite teacher. I leave every class feeling great. I am learning so much with every assignment. I thought I knew about scriptwriting before, but I am getting a first-class education now. Best class ever.
The best class ever. I want to direct, but with Prof. Curran I now understand how important it is to know how to scriptwrite. He even encourages us to take editing, acting, and cinematography courses. He's very funny and extremely smart. He knows a lot about everything. Take him. You will learn more than you could believe possible.
I agree with the previous comments: this is the best class at PCC. Maybe the best writing class in the country. Maybe the world. Mick is very smart, very funny, and brilliant in demonstrating how to write visually on the page. Take him if you can.
I am having the best class I've ever had in my life. Mick Curran is a genius and he's fun. I laugh while I learn. Best scriptwriting class ever.
I only signed up for this course because the guys at work said Mick Curran would help me understand stories better. I am a film editor and I thought I understood my job, but now I realize there's so much more I can learn. The reviews here are accurate. Mick imparts so much to everyone who comes to learn. Take him if you can get in the class.
I found this site and I want to contribute, but everyone's already said it: Mick Curran is brilliant, and he's funny, and he's personable and kind and smart and learned. The superlatives could go on and on. Frankly, he's the best instructor in any course I've ever taken (in more than 20 years of school.) Take him if you can. He's popular.
Take this class! Mick Curran is a genius. He's great. He's smart, kind, and amazing brilliant.
Too old school. Needs to keep up with current trends.
I agree with the previous comment is that he does play favorites and has lots of pets in the class.
It's funny, but being in Mick's class for a second time, I find it hard to understand anyone who doesn't truly enjoy it. Mick is very current -- he's the cutting edge of scriptwriting. And so what if he likes his students. He treats everyone equally. The class is fun -- and largely because Mick makes it fun. I think it's a great class.
Mick is an incredible professor! Very interactive, ridiculously intelligent (he's an encyclopedia for movies and other various subjects that he can always tie together), and most of all, he loves what he does. Definitely one of the best professors at PCC. I got an A in his class, which is easy to get if you PUT IN THE TIME AND YOU DO THE WORK!
Remarkable class. Incredible professor. World class smarts and a great manner and approach. Very funny. Very likeable. I have learned so much.
At ascript meeting yesterday, I was able to explain concepts to other executives based on the unbeliably eye-opening understanding Mick has and so generously communicated to my class. Everything he showed us is beginning to really make sense to me and I am improving as a writer. Thanks, Mick! (If you have a chance to take his course, you should.)
I was about to give up on college. I mean how many idiots do I have to endure to get a piece of paper. Then, I signed up for this scriptwriting course with Mick. He's brilliant and kind and committed. No one I've ever met meets with students with the purposr of making sure they understand and succeed. Sign up ow or his class will fill up.
An excellent class in concept and execution, taught by an exceelentprofesor who can walk the walk as well as talk the talk. Mick Curran is a blessing to scriptwriters, playrights and all sorts of directors and editors. Information-packed and funny lectures plus a dynamic approach that includes movie autopsies in which he explains how stories work.
This is the coolest course in the world. Mick Curran is truly brilliant. He's also funny and nice and very entertaining and informative. He does things other teachers don't do. He makes you want to learn. I never knew there was so much to learn about scriptwriting or movies. Sign up early because there's always too many wanting to get in his class.
Fantastic ciourse. And the prof, Mick Curran, really loves teaching it. You can feel his enthusiasm. He laughs, tells jokes, stories, and generally makes the classroom a fun place to be. And the stuff he relates is unbelievably useful. Greatest class I've ever taken. Anywhere. High school. University. Just amazing. Two thumbs way up!
I really enjoy this class and I really believe this professor understands his craft. Every lecture is packed with information. I have filled a notebook already at mid-term with notes. It's fun atmosphere to learn.
I just came from this class and I am so excited. Mick Curran may be the greatest rpofessor who ever lived (okay, maybe that's a slight exaggeration.) He is so smart, so kind, so good at communicating difficult concepts and making them easy to learn. And it's more than scriptwriting. Mick gives lessons in all areas of filmmaking and life. Take him.
My favorite class and professor (I wish you people would learn to spell!!!!) Honestly, this is a great class -- filled with fun, laughter, and tons and tons of useful information and "subtext." (that's an inside joke you'll get if you take the course with Professor Curran!)
I had a different instructor for 17A and Mick Curran does so much more and provides so much more content and help than other professors. It's life changing in so many ways.
I've learned more in this one semester than I have in any year. A very good teacher.
Amazing class taught by the consummate professional. He knows more about how to get you to learn than anyone else I've ever encountered in college. Nice, incredibly intelligent and witty. It's fun. He makes the class something you look forward to every week.
I mean come on, it really doesn't get any better than Mick! He's extremely passionate about screenwriting and it shows in his enthusiastic, personable, and witty lectures. STAY for the film interpretations, its one of the most valuable, and often overlooked assets of his course!
I've been meeting with producers and everyone of them seems to repeat the information I learned in Mick's class. It was a tremendous class and Mick's a great guy and a great professor. I have two notebooks filled with information that is making me a much better writer. Even my essay writing is getting better when I follow Mick's advice.
Fantastic class. Great professor. I really like everything about this class. Mick is amazingly brilliant. He reveals so much about the art and business and craft of screenwriting. Take him if you can get in.
Mick Curran's class is not only my favorite course, he is my favorite teacher of all-time. GHe's so smart and so understanding and so funny. He makes learning easy and this scriptwriting much easier. Take him even if you don't intend on being a scriptwriter. You'll learn so much about life, too. Great class and a great prof.
By far the most informative and entertaining clas I hav ever taken in college (and I have a B.S. and a Masters Degree.) Mick Curran is without peer as a professor. He communicates even difficult ideas well, I wish the college administration knew what a prize they have in him.
An amazing teacher! Cracks jokes and is light to help learning. I had his class three times. And I would take more if I could! He is IN the business and does his best to tell you the crucial things, and information that he passes on from experience. The class isn't hard if you listen and take notes, read and turn in assignments.
I took him for independent study & WOW! He'll teach you everything & then when you take his advanced screenwriting class he'll teach you MORE than everything! I visit all the time! I work in the film industry now & let me tell you Curran tells it like it is. Better than USC or UCLA take this guys class anywhere hes teaching because hes phenomenal!
I probably never think about classes or professors the year after I've taken them. But I still think about this class (and the advanced one) and about Mick Curran. The guy is a genius. He's friendly and smart and extremely interesting, but he gets you to think in ways that change your life for the better. The way he deconstructs movies is amazing.
The BEST screenwriting course available anywhere. I recommend Mick Curran. He's phenomenal teacher and a wonderful writer who gives you encouragement and inspires you with really helpful advice to become a screenwriter.
Long after I forget everything I learned in college, I will remember this course and this professor. He's entertaining and informative. He cracks jokes that illuminate great truths. Learning has never been this much fun. Plus he's an expert in scriptwriting and films. I really learned so much this semester.
I just optioned my first script. My roommate posted this last fall and I cannot think of any better recommendation: "The BEST screenwriting course available anywhere. I recommend Mick Curran. He's phenomenal teacher and a wonderful writer who gives you encouragement and inspires you with really helpful advice to become a screenwriter."
Best class ever. You learn how to communicate. Really. Prof. Curranped me become a better writer and filmmaker and even a better joke teller. He is super smart and he's patietnkin when you have questions. Best part? When he deconstructs movies and you finally understand how they work.
When I signed up for Mick Curran's class I knew he was a good teacher. My friends had taken him and recommended him. What I didn't know until I was in the class was what a great guy he is. He's smart, genius-like smart and very funny, but what is best is that he really cares about everyone. He makes learning fun.
I've had three classes with prof. Curran and I still think he's the best and brightest and kindest teacher at Citrus College. Because of him, I am now getting A's in my classes. He showed us how to study, how to read textbooks and other materials, how to take notes, how to write essays and how to think critically. Take him if you can.
I couldn't disagree more with the previous blogger's rating. I sat in the very same class and learned more in one semester than the three years I've taken courses around town. I guess you get out of the class what you put in. I highly rate the class.
He is a HORRIBLE teacher. His lectures about who he "knows" and does not help you with your script. He won't look at your script until you have to turn it in. Instead of helping you with your script he would rather watch a movie that you can easily watch as homework. You are better off taking the UCLA extension program.AVOID HIS CLASS AT ALL COSTS.
I HIGHLY, HIGHLY recommend Mic's class for anyone who wants to learn script grammar and structure. Screenwriting is hard work; I took him in 17A, plus twice in 17B. I learned so much, but that's because I paid attention in class. Many dilettantes in class can be annoying, but Mic's humor makes them palatable. A funny, five-star instructor.
I also HIGHLY rate this course and the instructor. Just a side note: anyone who criticizes Mick's approach is probably immature and not too bright. I have taken UCLA extension courses as well as Robert McKee's course. Mick provides more information, shows more attention, and delivers more craft secrets than any. Take him and learn.
The word "genius" is over-used and applied to people who don't deserve it. That said, Mick is as close to being a "genius" as anyone can be. His intellect is expansive. His lectures, delightful. His humor and good will unending. He delivers far more than anyone can reasonably expect.
I took Curran on saturday and was horrified to find out he kept you HOURS after the class was supposed to be out. Originally we were scheduled to leave at 11:50am, and often we would not get out until 3pm or later. He boasts about himself constantly, recounting the days of Walker Texas Ranger. Run for your life if you have one outside of class.
Mick's class is one of the best screenwriting courses I've taken. Yes, the course seems to go longer because he shows films after lectures, but no one is required to stay to watch them. However, going through the film to deconstruct it afterwards makes the class material make more sense. It also helps you apply the concepts to your own story.
I took TVR 17A and Mick does not keep people late on Saturdays. In fact, it's voluntary. What's amazing is just how good his class is. If you want to learn Mick will help you. You will learn so much.
Greatest class ever. Mick provides an insider's look at scriptwriting and the TV and film businesses as well. He is smart, funny, caring and a genius. It's clear that if someone doesn't have a working knowledge of the business or the craft of writing, they won't appreciate the wealth of information he gives everyone.
A very good class with a very good teacher who knows more about writing than anyone I've ever met. If you show up, take notes and listen you will grow as a writer. He brings people along to the highest peaks of professionalism. You'll never be the same.
Amazing course. Incredible teacher and man. Communicates so much and so well. You laugh and then learn so much from his examples. I've read some critical comments. My experience couldn't be mor positive. He knows so much and shares so much.
It's hard for me to imagine why anyone who takes Mick Curran's scriptwriting course wouldn't rate it most highly. It's a brilliant course and Mick is a kind, generous, and thoroughly knowledgable professional writer who generously shares his knowledge and works to hone each student's skill sets for becoming more proficient in the craft. Great class
Before I signed up for this class, I checked Rate My Professor and discovered that most student understand and adore Professor Curran. Some (idiots) do not. Curran is brilliant, funny, and engaging and reveals the secrets to scriptwriting AND human nature. Greatest writing course ever. Best value for your dollar. Two thumbs way up.
Professor Curran gives fascinating lectures with tons of useful and important information. He doesn't "brag", but uses events in his life to illustrate the points he makes. He never goes over time -- and when he shows movies, it's optional to stay. But so valuable. He's fun, smart, and very generous. Best class ever.
Wow. Mr. Curran makes you think of stories and films and life in new ways. He penetrates a story with a laser-like understanding of its structure and purpose and ultimate communication. I will never be the same. He has blessed me with new vision and infused me with new life. Great class.
I loved this class. It is so informative and fun. I guess some people may not like it, but I wonder why. Mr. Curran is very engaging, very funny, and very smart. He reveals so much about the "craft" of writing and is so generous and kind.
I have learned so much about scriptwriting, and movies, and television and the law. Today, Professor Curran gave the most incredibly informative lecture on artists rights and copyright and the history of control in the arts. My brain is reeling. Great class. Great professor. A must for all communications majors.
He as a reputation as a great scriptwriting profssor, but he knows as much about broadcast news writing and prpoducing. He took a group of us who knew nothing and in six weeks fashioned us into capable news writers. He's kind. He's smart. He's personable. he's funny. And he knows how to make you better. Take him. You'll get more than you expect.
A great course taught with care and understanding by a nice guy with a genius IQ and an encyclopedic knowledge of writing and films and how to inspire you. I've seen some negative comments, but I can imagine what they were expecting. Curran treats you with respect and collegiality, but he won't write your script for you. He inspires and encourages.
He makes it a routine to show and discuss a feature film after the lecture. During the lectures he does reiterate as many times as necessary to get you into the habit of Show don't tell routine for Screenwriting, which is a must if you were to be a successful Screenwriter.
Curran is the real thing. Nice dude. Very caring and helpful. Great lectures filled with valuable information. Very smart guy. Gives you the BIG PICURE and then shows you the secrets for scriptwriting and movie making and how to make it in the TV and film business. Fills up fast. A great guy.
I really enjoy this course. I have never learned so much. I am so grateful for this course. Mick Curran is really smart very kind and very funny. He gives much more than I ever expected.
I've had a lot of classes, here at PCC and at other colleges and universities. Mick Curran is among the very finest professors I've ever had. He's a good man, too. I've taken screenwriting courses at UCLA extension and I've taken Robert McKee's very expensive course, but Mick is clearer and more helpful than any course I've taken. Great courses.
Professor Mick knows his stuff and shares an almost overwhelming amount of practical information in easy-to-digest and clear lectures. He's funny and nice and very approachable. I highly recommend him and any course he's teaching because you will learn alot and feel great afterwards.
Mick is a great teacher and a wonderful guy. My class has ben so good and everyone agrees tat they're getting so much help in writing stories, learning script grammar, and having fun too. A "must" class for anyone who wants to work as a writer or director or editor or actor in the "biz."
I have taken several courses with Prof. Mick and he has been excellent at helping me (and others) get a more thorough understanding of scriptwriting. I live for this class. I have applied my increased knowledge to writing -- and I now have an agent. Kudos to Mick and a BIG THUMBS UP for this class and this professor.
Best class I've ever taken. I love movies and usually hate writing courses, but Mick so thoroughly understands his subject wants to help others gain mastery, and I found myself truly enjoying not just the clear information he provides, but even the process of creating a script. No one I know or have heard of is as brilliant and caring. A MUST.
This is unheralded class and most people in the industry don't know about it, but it is clearly above any other scriptwriting course anywhere. Mick Curran is a gifted writer with an amazing intellect and an encyclopedic knowledge of films and all forms of scriptwriting and extremely generous with his time and expertise. This is the place to be.
Valuable commentary . I Appreciate the information - Does anyone know where I could locate a fillable a form document to edit ?
I do not understand the previous comment. It looks like a mistaken identity. I recommend Prof Curran's TVR 17 A class as the best scriptwriting course around. I scored a Writers' Assistant job right afterward the class -- and my boss tells me he's very pleased with what I know. I give Prof Curran the credit. I have never had such a good class.
Curran knows his stuff and he shares it with the class. It's almost overwhelming how much you can learn in one semester. He gives you anything you need or want. Great, great course.
I can count on one hand professors who taught me things I did not already know. I would need to use my toes to count the days I was completely enthralled in Curran's lectures. I have taken 3 classes with him and if I could, I would sign up in a nanosecond. The fact that a professor at his level is at a community college is mind boggling.
This was a fantastic class. I feel like I learned more in one semester about stories and movies and the TV and film industries than I've learned about all my classes in every subject in college and high school over the last 6 years. Curran is so helpful, so smart, so creative I will be digesting his information-filled lectures & handouts for years.
I took this class for the credit, but I was very surprised at how much I learned in just six weeks -- and how it has affected my life and made me a better student. Prof Curran knows so much and is able to transmit it so clearly and quickly that I am still learning from all the notes I took. This was my favorite course of all time.
I've read the reviews of all my teachers and I usually take them with a grain of salt, but in the case of Mick Curran, all the praise and admiration students feel is real because Mick is a genuine gift to the college and the students who want to know about the film and tv business and scriptwriting. High marks for the class and Mick.
I have never had classes that I enjoyed as much as the ones I took with Mick. He knows so much and he takes the time to find a way to transfer that knowledge to each of his students. I've taken other scriptwriting courses at UCLA and its extension courses, but Mick's classes are so much more. He's a treasure and I've learned so much.
Definitely the best course I've ever taken. Mick provides more information in one lecture than most other professors will in three or four classes. Funny, insightful, brilliant, and truly gifted. In an hour with him going over my script, I saw his genius at work showing me how to craft a script that my actor friends loved. This class is a must.
I have learned so much that it's hard to imagine where I was before I took this course. It's about the business and craft and art and science of writing for the screen. The class just ended and yet I want it to go on and on. Mick gives us so much in every lecture, but the real prize is staying for the film that he shows and then deconstructs. ;)
You will learn more in one semester from Mick Curran than you can ever possibly learn from any other professor or teacher in two or maybe three semesters. He is brilliant, kind, caring, and a full-on genius. His TA, Angie, is also very helpful. Best class I have ever taken.
I took Mick several years ago and really enjoyed all the information and helps and hints he provides everyone. But a year ago, after a family emergency, I contacted him for help in writing a story. If it's even possible, he's smarter, more creative, more helpful, and even younger looking than he was before. What is more, he solved my problems. A++
You will learn more in one lecture in Prof. Curran's class than you get from most classes all semester. He knows all about scriptwriting and the film and TV industries -- and he gives away the "secrets" to creating a character, crafting a strong story, and all the nuances that make for compelling viewing. My favorite class and favorite professor.
Best scriptwriting class on the planet. I took a couple at UCLA and a few online, but nothing and no one compares to what Mick's giving us every week. I filled four notebooks.
A friend of mine recommended Mick Curran's scriptwriting course to me and and I wasn't sure about taking it, even though I heard the greatest things about his lectures and how he inspires you to become more creative. After taking it, I am convinced that everyone should take a course with Mick. His knowledge and care will make you a better person.
Prof. Curran is by far the best English professor that I've ever had. His class was incredibly helpful and insightful. Funny and brilliant as he is, his lectures are filled with hints and information that will help you write your papers. He really cares for his students and guides them step by step through their essays. I definitely recommend!!
Buckle up, Professor Curran will rock your world. You will learn the ins and outs of script writing plus a whole lot more. Best class I ever had -- and it's still affecting me. You learn so much about stories and life that this is the course that keeps on giving.
Best. Class. Ever. Effective teacher. Accomplished writer. Brilliant analysis. Caring person. Wise beyond words.
The best scriptwriting class. You will learn more than any of the classes in this town because Mick WANTS you to learn and become proficient at it. Great and informative lectures. Insightful lessons. A happy experience. I've taken lots of other courses and nothing has ever been this good.
It's not as though I have to jump on the Mick Curran bandwagon, but I have seldom run into anyone who's as knowledgeable and dedicated and smart and kind as he is. Plus he's patient. My class is about fifty-fifty with some students totally into everything he lectures about and the other might as well be a gym class for the effort they put into it.
At the end of every semester I "grade" my teachers and this year most of them passed, well, mostly. Only one was A-material. Only one was superior in every way: Mick Curran. I liked his humor and his wide-ranging knowledge of practically any subject. He is especially knowledgeable about writing and screenwriting and films.
Professor Curran is a gem as a teacher, as well as a person. I'm going to miss his positivity, and advice. The script is the hardest part of the class. Other than that, you just listen to him talk, and watch movies. If you take this class, Curran will not only help you be a better script-writer, but a better person.
I learned more about how to become a better writer in this broadcast news writing course in six weeks than I have in all the English courses I have ever taken. Take him. Curran knows what he's doing and he will make you better.
I gained so much respect for him today when a student responded to something he recounted from the past. He stopped the lecture and demonstrated true humility and compassion for the student's feelings. Most professors I've had known would never be so sensitive and caring. He's very knowledgeable and very kind.
Excellent class. Learning a lot every day. I can see my writing -- in everything -- getting better. Curran knows what he's doing.
Lots and lots of incredibly important information on writing in general and writing for the big and little screen specifically. Professor Curran is funny, engaging, and very helpful. I understand why he's so popular with students -- he actually wants them to succeed and gives them everything he's learned and experienced to help make that happen. .
Smartest, most creative, and the nicest professor I've ever known.
Every class I marvel at how much I'm learning from Prof. Curran. He understands scriptwriting and the TV and film business in a unique and amazing way -- and he gives us vital information every week to help us become better in every aspect of writing.
Mick is an amazing writer & teacher. His lectures teach you the business and craft of screenwriting. This is why he stands out; he is passionate about his craft, almost as passionate as when he first started in the business. He's knowledgeable about what he teaches and an industry professional. You couldn't ask for a better person to learn from.
By far the best professor I've had at PCC. He's amazing. He understands not only how to create and structure a good story, he explains how and why scripts should be formatted to get the best response from agents, executives, directors, actors, and crew members. No one else at PCC has his wealth of knowledge or the willingness to share it.
It's rare to see a professor truly dedicated to improving students for real life experiences. Mick is certainly one of the rare professors. Even after taking his class, he still finds time to help you grow your craft. I highly recommend taking his course if you have the chance to.
I love films and I heard that at PCC, Mick Curran is THE professor to take. He's an industry veteran and an accomplished writer and professor. Frankly, I was overwhelmed not just as his lectures and the materials he provides, but also the engaging way he has with all of his students. He's the only person at PCC I highly recommend to other students.
This class format needs to be reworked.
You are better off learning on Youtube.
Pseudo-intellectual environment.
Inadequate in many ways.
Though it was difficult in the beginning, Mick is very patient. He understands what it's like to be a writer, truly. Even then, his assignments aren't hard. All he asks is for you to get the work done, and you can schedule a meeting with him if you're still struggling! It's so awesome to see a caring professor!
Disappointing.
