I've learned more about English literature, and essay writing, and researching an essay in six weeks from Prof. Curran than combining all the years and semesters of college I've had with other teachers. It's true. He is the best! Easily the smartest, but also humble and kind and hardworking. If you have the chance, take him any time for any class.
Okay, there's about ten of the 30-some students in class who are behind this email. None of us got an A, one got a B, and yetb we all feel very special. We met a truly good man. Prof. Curran's funny, caring and incredibly brilliant. What's more, he's the first college prof any of us have ever had who wants us to succeed. He works harder than we do
Stop reading and sign up for Prof. Curran's class. He's the best. He's smart, funny, and truly gifted at helping everyone "connect the dots" and understand not just what you're reading and writing, but how to craft a properly structured collegiate essay and why it's important to know how to "critically think" through an issue.
Prof. Curran is the best English professor I've ever had! He cares about his students and tries his hardest to make things understandable and interesting. If you want to learn more than just English, take Curran's classes! He's fun, interesting, and caring :)
Prof. Curran is one of the most helpful professor you can find. He is extremely responsible and kind. He is also very experienced as an instructor. He'll be your mentor :)
This is my favorite class and Prof. Curran is the best prof I've had -- either here at Citrus or elsewhere. He's clever, funny, clear, nice, smart, and just about the perfect teacher. I am learning so much about communiation in general and movies specifically. This is one course everyone should try to take.
Mr. Curran is the best teacher I've ever had. He takes lots of time to completely explain how to think things through and to write well. I understand writing now. It all makes sense now. There's lots of practice for each writing assignment. Mr. Curran has this motto that really works -- "life by the yard is hard, but life by the inch is a cinch."
I was sad I took this class in the summerbecause it went so fast. Mr. Curran is a ghreat teacher his class takes work but he is fair...And very motivating. He is very realistic and has awsome stories. He will actually hype you up to do your HW.. I recemend him!!
I'm glad so many students had a good experience with this teacher. Because i did not. I think it's safe to say most people in my class didn't either. He acts as if your friend and then stabs you in the back. He doesn't give enough instruction for the essays. He hardley ever gives grades higher then Cs on essays. The midterm and final are imposible.
The previous blogger is entitled to his opinions, but I was just in the same class and most people enjoyed the experience. Prof. Curran devoted an entire lecture to writing critical analysis essays and provided four separate handouts to help. Also, both textbooks had chapters devoted to the writing of critical analyses. It's a case of sour grapes.
My BF just told me about one of the latest blogs disses Prof. Curran. It's a shame that student felt the need to put down a truly great teacher. I've taken the 291 course as well as English 101, and it's an absolute lie that prof. Curran doesn't give out A's and B's on essays. I know -- I've earned some. What's more, he explains everything fully.
Great class. I wish I had had this class years ago. I would have saved myself a lot of trouble. Fantastic teacher. Mick Curran is a lot of fun as well as being incredibly informative. I highly recommend him.
This was probably my favorite class and least favorite subject, but Mr. Curran made it easier to understand this time around and now I reall know what I'm doing when it comes to writing sentences, paragraphs and essays. One of the very best teachers at the school. I highly recommend him.
Sensational class. Great movies. And a great, funny, caring teacher. He knows more about movies than any of the people who pontificate on TV or in books. He opens new vistas and lets you see what's really going on in amovie. He also spends extra generous amount of time teaching how to write a basic college essay. Take this course with him.
What amazes me is how many students give low assessments for teachers who give them low grades. And how many "A" students love their teachers. Well, I got a "C" from Mick Curran. I screwed up this semester, but it wasn't Mr. Curran's fault. In fact, he was clear, informative, and kind. You get what you deserve in his class. He's more than fair.
Mick has got to be one of the greatest teachers I have ever had. I had him for English 100 and Film Literature. He really helps his students out by giving them study guides for the test. Mick is a great, funny and very caring teacher. He will help you with your papers to help you recieve a better grade. He definetly wants you to pass his class!
When you read through the majority of the comments you get a feeling for how special Mick Curran is and how effective he is at communicating with students. By far he is the best teacher I've ever had. He is very smart. very funny, very clear and concise. But most of all, he is very, very kind and demonstrates how much he wants you to succeed.
I never worked so hard or learned so much. The guy's fair. Really fair. He makes it easy to learn. In fact, he makes you into a better student and a better person. I really think I can think through issues and respond to ideas better. he changed me and others and looking back, I can't believe how he did it. Take him if you get the chance.
An amazing person, and an amazing teacher. He is by far one of my most favorite professors i have ever had. He teaches you to think beyond boundaries and stress learning rather than grades. Take this teacher if your willing to learn more about yourself and throw away what society has made you believe. 5 stars.
He is a good professor. He teaches the material well and he wants his students to pass. By showing up to class and doing his work will get you a good grade and you will learn a lot. I recommend him for English 100. He is fair and he's there to help you do your best. I would take this teacher again!
Prof. Curran is a great teacher, and a great person. He takes time to help you understand what you're doing, why you're doing, how you can do, and sometimes even who else can help you. I learned more about writing and just thinking than I have in years of schooling. He tells stories, relates things to students. I recommend him to anyone.
If you want to actually learn something, take his class.
He will inspire you do your best.
Professor Curran is by far the most professional and caring individual I have ever met in all my years of education. He is a professor who truly cares how you do, and how hard you work. He WILL criticize you, however it is in a way that you will learn more from it. He will go to the gates of hell and back for you. TAKE HIM, YOU WILL NOT REGRET IT.
He really helps you. He has lots of worldly experience which comes in handy and not just for english. He is willing to take the time to actually explain and his classes are fun. He treats you like an adult but he doesnt forget your a student or still a young person.
He is an overall great teacher. He is one of the few teachers where you can come to years or months later to for advice. He has great experience in everything besides film and english and with that he is ready to help you.
Great teacher who loves to help and see his students succeed.
This si the first time I've reviewed a professor, although I come to this site often. The reason why I finally am reviewing a professor is because Mick Curran is quite possibly the best professor in the country. I've been in school for years and never found anyone who made any sense about logic and critical thinking. He does. Take him. You'll agree
The best English instructor at Citrus. Effective, encouraging and smart, Mr. Curran tops the others I've taken (or dropped out of courses with) because he seems to know how to relate the complexities of critical thinking and writing so well. He answers every question I've had -- and he's considerate , too. He treats me like an intelligent adult.
I learned a lot in his class, I've even grown to like english a little...I use to hate it..
I really like the way he breaks things down into small understandable lessons. I never knew or cared that much about English grammar or writing, but after a couple of classes, I really am learning a lot. It's not that hard, either. The class motto is "Life by the yard is hard, but life by the inch is a cinch." It works.
Two of my closest friends took Mr. Curran last year for English 40 and now they're getting A's on their essays in other classes. That's why I signed up with him. Heading into our third week, I can already see why my friends are doing so well. Mr. Curran makes it easy to understand what essay writing is all about.
Great class. Great professor. You'll learn so much. He talks WITH you, not AT you. Mr. Curran is funny, nice, and very smart. He really wants everyone in class to do well. Spends lots of time meeting with students. I know because he's taken time to help me finally understand what "critical thinking" really is and how to write a college essay.
He is extremely helpful and is always willing to work with you one on one if you do not understand. I would recommend everyone to take his class. He will teach you a different way of approaching English. All that is needed for his class is attendance and not sleeping thought it. With that there is no way you can not pass.
Very clear. Very cool. Very helpful. The dude is the best. I signed up because friends told me about him. Prof. Curran will rock your world. Good things. You'll learn how to write and most important how to think.
This is my first rating a professor. This is the first time I ever WANTED to rate a professor. I'm doing it because Prof. Mick Curran is so cool. He's amazing in class. I'm not the only one who's been struggling understanding how to write and to "critically think." Mick makes it so easy to learn. Take him. You won't be sorry. He's great.
Seriously one of the best teachers I have ever had. He has so much knowledge that if you think you know about something then talk to him and he can most likely help you with just about anything. He makes sure that everyone, and I mean everyone, in his class understands what is going on.
While I've only been in college for two years, Prof. Curran is by far the best teacher I've ever encountered -- at college, high school, and even before that. He's very smart and at the same time very committed to making sure everyone understands what's important to learn. I feel like I've learned ten years of English in one semester. Take him.
I am writing an essay for class, and for the first time in my life, I have no sens eof panic. Mick provides clear instructions and a bunch of very helpful handouts so I understand what I'm doing and how to do it. I can't believe this is as "easy" as it is -- but Mick has us approaching writing from a completely different approach. It works.
Take Mick Curran for any class he's teaching. It's that simple. You will not find anyone who makes learning so easy or so much fun. If you're not sure how to write an essay, take Mick. If you don't understand "critical thinking", take Mick. If you want to learn from a brilliant professor who's also humble and funny, take Mick. You will learn.
Sheer genius.
Yes. Read these other comments. A remarkable teacher and a class guy as well. You'll learn more than you could ever have imagined. What's more, Prof. Curran is a great motivator and encourager. No teacher has ever made me feel this way. Take him.
Cool dude. Really rakes. Best. Liked him and his approach. He's really, really helpful. Even meets with you off the clock to help you. Best teacher I've ever had. Makes you want to be a better student and a better person.
I'm not the best student in the world, but I learned so much from Prof. Curran. It was frustrating because it was a Fast Track course and there wasn't enough time, but Prof. Curran managed to help me make sense of it. I understand how to write a research essay now and I finally understand what makes a good essay. I learned alot.
I always have had problems with English and writing. At first, I thought this would be more of the same, but Professor Curran is really different. he's funny, and smart, and really takes an interest in helping you understand and start "connecting the dots." I'm better for having had him. "Life by the yard is hard; life by the inch is a cinch."
Good class. Very good teacher. I laughed and learned. More than I ever have. he makes you want to learn.
This was my very first college course and the experience was great as I learned in such a way that I never would have thought. Fun while taking in all the data and at a level were it makes me want to go back to continue learning. Great Professor!:)
I didn't know about this site until earlier this year, but I wish i had. I would've avoided taking some pretty dumb teachers. One thing I want to say is that Prof. Curran is not like them. he's really good at helping you understand even the most complex things. He's funny, and humble too. He's my favorite teacher ever.
This site is very helpful. I checked up on Prof. Curran, saw good reviews and took him. My BFF took someone else. She's SO SORRY. Prof. Mick is the best teacher I've ever had. Compared to my friend, I'm like a genius now when it comes to writing essays and analyzing stories. It's all because Mick makes learning easy and fun. Take him!
I don't think that everyone knows how much better Prof. Curran is than the other profs teaching this course. Even some students seem more concerned with just getting by with the highest grade. Prof. Curran teachers us a lot about how the educational system works, so all the exercises and essays we write finally make sense. I highly recommend him.
Take this class with this professor! Mick Curran may be the greatest college teacher ever. He makes everything understandable and he works with you, not against you. He meets often with students and the classes are actually fun. I never liked English writing courses, but I loved this one. Mick's smart and nice, too. He wants you to succeed.
professor Curran helped me a lot on my writing skills. I improved in so many ways. I recommend you to take his class, for its helpful, exciting, and easy. He gives test before hand and his assignments are very easy as well. Professor Curran is a cool guy. Anyone who needs to take English 40 should take Professor Curran's class. ;)
Professor Curran is the best professor or teacher I have ever experienced. He is extremely helpful, interesting and easy to understand. He made coming to class something I actually wanted to do. He joked in class as part of his lessons. This made the class get involved and actually want to be there. I definatley recommend Mick. I love him!
Does anyone know his email address.
Everything the other students write is true. Mick Curran transforms students. He is amazing. Funny (sometimes almost corny), brilliant, kind, gifted. I learned more than I ever have in ANY class. Mick wants students to succeed so he teaches them HOW to learn as he teaches writing and critical thinking. His email address is [email protected]
He's a sly one. Prof. Curran has a way of getting you to learn in spite of yourself. I understand now why he's so highly rated -- he really knows what he's doing. It also helps that he's funny, smart, and easy to get along with. I had so much trouble last year, but now I am finally understanding. And my grades show that I've learned a lot.
I have learned more in a few weeks than I did all last semester. Prof. Curran starts with the "big picture" and then shows how to take things step by step to write clear and understandable essays. I'm really enjoying this class. I hated English before, but now I finally see what it's about and how to do it. Take him if there's room in the class.
Professor Curran is a good man, and a good teacher. He's funny, and he's engaging. He does make you work, though. He will break everything down and explain it so you get it, but he will make you read and write and put time in. What's nice is that he does it for the students' sake and not his ego. Take him. It's worth it.
Professor Curran is fun, entertaining, brilliant, and very proficient. He's great. This class, though, is difficult because the state and school require at least three major essays. Curran gives handouts, explanations, and lots of class time to help you understand what to do and how to do it. Great class, but there's some work.
While it's a great class, it's also an advanced class. Some students are probably not prepared to do the writing requirements, but the Professor provides lots of notes and instruction. It's fun
I think I am finally getting this writing stuff. I finally understand what a college essay is and what goes into it. Prof. Curran deserves a lot of credit for that. I've never had a teacher ever put time in with me the way he does. Students line up to meet with him because he takes extra time make sure you get it. A great prof. Take him.
Great teacher. Great time in class. I was never very good at English, but now I'm getting much better. I owe that to Prof. Curran. He's funny, kind, and very inclined to help. Take him if you can.
THIS DUDE IS THE SHIZNITS!! Mick, is a stand up guy! He is probably one of the most humble men I have met. He is caring and makes essay writing fun. He is a genuine person that seriously cares about YOUR SUCCESS! He will take time out of his day to make sure you get it. He stood with me an hour after class explaining a assignment. HE IS A STUD!
OMG! I like this guy. He's sweet, but cool, too. Very, very smart -- but he doesn'tmake a big deal out of it. Instead, he focuss on helping students LEARN. I hve never had anyone as concerned with me "getting it" than this prof. Cool. Funny. Smart. Honest. Caring. I would take him for every course if I could.
I don't know what anyone is talking about. This teacher was horrible. His explanations went way over anyone's heads and when you bring in some work, all he does is makes jokes about it. I specifically rememering him saying to me, when I didn't know something " that's sad". Wow what an amazing teacher. Make the student feel like garbage. He'll learn
Normally I just laugh at the comments here, but that last blogger is obviously out for blood. I took English 101 fro Prof Curran and he was superb. Sounds to me like sour grapes. Frankly, I've never had a teacher who was a fair or worked so hard to make everything understandable. What's sad is how childish some students can be.
My exposure to Prof. Curran was very good. I learned more from him than anyone else. He was funny, but never cruel. He worked harder than anyone in class to make things understandable and spent many hours outside class advising me and other students. I guess you get out of something wat you put in.
Gee, I think I do know what everyone is raving about -- and it's horrible when a pissed off student berates a great teacher. Prof. Curran is humble, funny, smart, and kind. I learned more about films, the entertainment industry, how to write a research essay, and, yes, about myself in this course than in all the other courses I've taken.
I enjoyed my class with Mick Curran and learned a lot. He tries to make everything understandable and he makes it fun to learn inspite of the subject (which I've never liked.) What I really like is that he was able to help me finally understand how to write -- and how to figure out what I am thinking about a subject. I recommend him a lot
I've just gotten my grade and I'm more proud of the B I got in Prof. Curran's class than any A I've ever earned. I'm been fooling teachers all through high school and I finally ran into a teacher who wouldn't let me slide by. I actually learned the parts of speech, how to write strong sentences and an essay. Great class. I recommend this professor.
I took him for english 40 and 100. He gives you the quiz before hand and you just have to fill out the answers and make sure they are right. His class is not really hard since quizes beforehand. It is alot of funnnnnn.
I have had many good and excellent teachers before, but Prof. Curran is in a category that tops them all. He is smart, funny, earnest, and well-organized. he treats everyone as an equal. He expects everyone to be an adult and take personal responsibility in class. In exchange, he provides really clear and understandable guidance and help. Take him.
I get it. I finally get it. After weeks, I get it. Prof. Curran is the MAN. He stuck with me and worked harder than any teacher I've ever had to help me understand the process of critical thinking and expository essay writing. He's been right all along. It's not that hard. He may be the best teacher ever.
It's easy to like Prof. Mick. He's smart and funny, but most of all he really cares if you get it. I know I could have worked harder, but I don't think Prof. Mick could work any harder than he does. He's generous with time and he gives you lots of feedback. I've never met any teacher like him. He tells you the truth, and wants you to succeed.
best teacher ever=]smart, funny, nice, and all the above!
I agree. Great teacher. I have learned so much this semester. Stuff makes sense now. He will hold you to the basic standards, but you'll really appreciate when you finally get it. Yeh, he's funny, helpful, friendly, and kind. Everything is great.
He's the best. Prof Curran is smart, caring, and very helpful. He is also very funny. He makes me want to learn and he keeps me on track. He even sets time aside for anyone who needs help. Students line up to meet with him. He may be the best teacher at the college. Take him if you get the chance. You won't regret it.
Prof. Mick is a real person. He's smart, and patient, and nice. Not everyone wants to lean, but Prof. Mick somehow manages to get even the most difficult stuff to be understandable. Take him. He's the best.
I have never had a teacher who works so hard to make every student a success. Not everyone in this class puts in the time to get a good grade, but Mr. Curran sure does. Every class he spends time trying to make everyone better -- at grammar, critical thinking, writing, researching. My highest marks are for him. He's one of the best.
He explains everything in about a dozen different ways because most of the students are too stupid to pay attention, but Mr. Curran is very patient with them. I think he actually wants everyone to do well, but since most don't even do the basic homework, I know that won't happen. He's a good dude. Smart, clever, funny, patient, and kind.
sO yes he is veRy sweet. the test are easy.. he gives you the test before hand so that you can look for the answers then be ready for the test. if you have any question he will end up giving you the anwers, you just have to ask him. Papers, papers are another issue. He teachs very akwardly. He repeats the obvious but when you write ur paper as he e
A great teacher who shows lots of compassion and interest in his students. His tests reflect the textbooks and the important facts every student should know. He's funny, and personable, and competent. If he has a flaw, it's that he wants everyone to work and succeed. In my class, there were people who never showed up willing to work. Too bad 4 them
I just took this class from Prof Curran as part of a compressed English 100/English 101 semester. I'm still decompressing, but I know something -- all of my friends who took other teachers don't know half as much as I do. Maybe it's Prof. Curran's approach and maybe it's just the way he really works with you, but he opens up your mind. Thumbs up.
I suppose everyone is entitled to expressing an opinion, so here goes: Prof. Mick Curran is probably the best qualified teacher I've ever experienced -- and maybe the best at Citrus. He's extremely intelligent and yet he humbles himself to reach even the least accomplished student. He's fair, and crystal clear. He's also funny and very helpful.
I'm finishing up my first essay for this class and I'm happy. I think I finally what what to do and how to do it. Thanks to Professor Curran. He's funny. Very funny. And he's easygoing and smart and he knows how to make this stuff easy to get. I recommend him. You'll so much so fast. Five stars!!!
This was my first college class, since graduating high school 11 yrs. ago. I am lucky for landing such a great professor. I have learned a substantial amount of useful information. He uses the most interesting topics to discuss and write about. His teachigs are useful for learning how to write as well as giving a heads up on life. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
This was my fist year in College after taking a year off to work. The guidance and encouragement he gave and still gives me is invaluable to my success in college. I Greatly Encourage any student to take one of his courses. As long as you are willing to work then he will lead you to the right path.
Professor Curran is the best professor I have ever had. He is someone who values his students, wants them to succeed. He makes us want to come to class. I highly recommend him, I love his classes. He is a smart man, loves life, and knows how to teach. I look forward to being in his class again, he is the best..M Curran is awesome!!
Professor Curran is a genius. He is someone who wants his students to succeed. Class is fun to be in, while at the same time, you learn how become a better writer. He values his students, is extremely smart, and shows you how to do your best. I wouldn't want another English teacher. I will wait for him to teach the classes I need.Much respect!
Mick Curran may be easy-going, cheerful and humorous but he teaches with a seriousness and passion that is rare in professors. He KNOWS exactly what he's talking about and he holds nothing back from his students. I learned so much from his class and grew a bit. I'm not going to forget Mick ever. He's that awesome!
Mick is the greatest teacher I've ever had in any form of education. I'm an aspiring Film Critic and he taught me things about the film industry that I had no idea were even true. He is kind and very fun, but he's also very in-depth about his subject and teaches you a great many things. Mick, you are the man!
BEST PRO EVER. HE MAKES LEARNING EASY. I'VE LEARNED MORE IN HIS CLASS THAN ANY OTHER CLASS EVER. TAKE HIM.
I never realized what I didn't know until Professor Mick took the time to explain what an essay is supposed to be and how to block it out, outline it, and then write and rewrite it. He even brought the class to the library to get us a running start at how to do a research essay. I learned more this semester than ever before. Good class, great guy.
Mick is a cool dude. He is an honest guy and fair. If you put in the class work and ask questions. You will pass. He cares about students and honestly wants them to succeed. He is more concerned with the success of students then any other professor I've take at Citrus. Easy to get along with and he is very approachable. I had a fun in class.
Mick is the man! His classes are interesting and no matter when it is if you need help, he is ther for you. Very helpful and an amazing person!
Looking back over the past semester, I probably learned more from Prof. Mick than I ever could have imagined I would. He's excellent. he makes the complex simple and the simple stuff more than easy. I wish he'd teach some other courses. He's worth taking. Best professor at the school.
Never liked English ever. I like this class tho. Great teacher. Explains everything well. He's also very funny and he really cares about helping everyone succeed.
I was one of almost a hundred students who tried to get into Prof. Mick's English 100 in the fall. The class was already filled to overflowing and we were still trying to sign up. I got in this winter section and I am glad I did. My BFF had him and she's doing amazing. I now see why. He's the best teacher at the school. Funny. Smart. Caring. Kind.
This is my first professor rating and I really like Prof. Mick's approach. He's easy to get to know and he wants his students to learn. He really does. he works at it. And I'm beginning to see the difference between writing an essay and just writing a report. I never knew any of this. Take him if you can. His classes fill quickly.
I never had any teacher care about me learning. Prof. Curran wants everyone in class to do well. He wants us to learn. And I have learned how to think critically, how to write an essay. Take him if you can. His classes fill up quickly. Best prof on campus.
A very, very good teacher. He works hard to give you what is needed to pass the class and then to do well in the following classes. Very funny. Very nice. Very fair.
I really learned in this class. Prof. Mick is a great guy who is really concerned about making sure you understand how to read critically, think critically, and write critically. I feel like every other class I've ever taken didn't help me as much as this one. I think I really understand what it means to be a college student now.
It's clear Prof Curran knows what he talks about and he cares very much to see his students get "it" and do well. It must be frustrating, though, because my class is filled with so many students who really just want to get by without really learning. I used to hate English. Now I don't. I think I finally understand.
I hate English classes. I hate grammar and I hate writing essays. But I like Mr. Curran a lot. He explains everything so it makes sense. He makes the whole process easier than it's ever been. I recommend highly his class to anyone. Take him. You'll learn a lot and you'll laugh a lot because Mr. Curran is funny as well as smart.
Curran is a great professor. At first you may feel a little intimidated, but he's very clear on what he expects. If you don't understand the material, ask. He's more than happy to help you. He made the class fun, while being able to learn at the same time. I recommended him to my sister. Thanks Curran! :)
Hands down...BEST ENGLISH TEACHER I've ever had. He is fun, funny, smart, and charismatic. I took his fast track course 100/101 & I am HORRIBLE at english. H is also patient, clear on what he wants and he's willing to go that extra mile for you. I pass both classes with A's.
i took his cless for english 40. hard teacher but very helpful. he is very funny but strict. tests are easy if u study
I checked Mick Curran's reviews before I enrolled and it seemed that most students really liked him. Now I know why. I need English 104 to transfer and I was nervous about taking it. This is a pretty tough course. But the way Mick teaches it, it's not as tough and it's fun. I understand everything better than I ever have. A great teacher.
A tough, but fair class taught by a fun, yet serious teacher who works hard to help you. I realize now how little I have learned about English and writing essays. I thank Mr. Curran for taking a lot of time and showing a lot of patience to help us. I feel like I'm learning how to write essays for the first time.
I am learning so much in this class. I never really understand how to write an essay before now. I never really gave anything much thought. Now, because of Mick Curran, I am surprised at how my thinking has changed and how to sort through issues. I am really doing well (finally!) at expressing and supporting my views. Great class. Great prof!
Curran is a very good teacher who makes you work, but he works even harder to make you better. No one ever helped me this much before. Smart and funny and good looking, he's the type of prof I wish I could always have.
I love this professor and course. I understand everything he says. He's wonderful. Take him.
I just spent two hours working on my research essay and I really understand what I'm doing. Thank you, Mr. Curran, for spending so much time outside class helping me understand organizing and writing. No teacher has ever helped me this much.
I never understood essaywriting before. Now I do. Now I know how to read a story and analyze it. I know how to do a research paper. I know how to really read a story. What makes this so unusual is my Mr. Curran helped me and the other students all the help we needed to learn. A good guy.
Hardest class I've ever had, but the best teacher by far. I have learned so much. Mr. Curran is very kind and very, very helpful in class and even after class in his office.
Love this professor. Someone broke into my car and stole my backpack. I tried explaining that to other professors, but got lower grades on late work. Professor Curran let me print out my essay from home and didn't assess me a late penalty grade. He's the best. Easygoing, smart, and kind. You'll learn alot from him.
OMG! Great prof! Great class! I've learned SO much. Not just about how to "read" a film, but how to actually write an essay. He gives detailed understandable step-by-step instructions for the process. I learned what I learned from him to get "A"s in three other courses this semester. He's a good man, too. Kind and sweet and funny and smart.
If you have to take an english course, take one with Mick Curran. I've had him four times -- 40, 100, 101 and 104 and he gets better and better. I learned more about reading, thinking, and writing from him than any other teacher I've ever taken. Engish 104 was the best experience. I now see things in a new light. Take him. He's great.
A great professor. He tends to get off track in stories he tells which sometimes end up confusing you because you don't know what you're supposed to be doing. Its difficult understanding what he wants in the essays but if you talk to him one on one you'll get it.I recommend him to students who don't have much difficulty paying attention
OUTSTANDING professor. Prior to takeing his engish 101 corse i was really bad at writing papers and structueing my paragraphs but he showed me step by step how to write a great paper and tips i can use later on when i transfer. He really does care about every student he teaches individually. Great teacher, great man. highly recomend him
OUTSTANDING professor. prior to attending his class i was really bad at writing papers and sturctureing paragraphs. but he showed me step by step what i need to do in order to write a great paper. if you come to his class to learn, you are in good hands. i HIGHLY recomend his class. Great teacher, great man.
Professor Curran is a great and knowledgeable person. his test are easy as long as you study the practice test. He grades hard on essays though. I worked my butt off and received a B.
Already in a semester after taking Prof. Curran's course I can see the difference in the way I approach school. I know what an essay is, what it does and how to write one well. Great prof. I recommend him to anyone who wants to be better. Thumbs way UP!
I'm glad I took this professor for english 104. His tests are easy and based on the practiced tests he gives. I'm glad he passed me because I didn't do one of the essays. He's really nice and helpful.
A really fine professor. He makes an effort to help every one understand how to write essays. I've had lots of teachers "teach" writing, but no one has ever made the type of effort or explained things so well. Take him if you can get into his class. His classes fill up fast.
I jave never had a teacher give me so much time and effort. He shows our class a lot of respect and his explanations about writing essays and how to read and interpret fiction is hard to understand at first, but then its crystal clear and you suddenly get so much more. He's the best teacher I have ever had.
A difficult course but taught with great care by prof. Curran. You'll learn so much from him. He introduces divurgent thinking which eads to critical thinking and creativity. He shows you how to structure an essay and how to logically build and coherently support your ideas. I wish I had taken him before. College would have been easier.
Great class. And Prof. Mick is a great professor. He really understand English and he breaks it down for everyone. he wants everyone to succeed. His motto is "life by the yard is hard and life by the inch is a sinch" and he shows you how to break essays and stories down to understandable pieces and how to make sense of that. I've learned so much.
I didn't know what to expect. This class seemed hard at first, but Prof. Curran has shown us things and revealed so much about understanding stories. He even has broken down the process of writing essays. A Very, very good class and a sensational teacher.
Great Professor but isn't really straight forward about what he wants in his essay (there is no sense of direction). He gives out too many hand outs (information overload). Sloppy writer. But if hit him with specific questions things are usually clarified. He really means well and wants you to succeed.
I never want this semester to end.
Final paper is on "Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone." He grades very hard on papers; no-one got an A on first 2 papers, but he gives easy multiple choice tests which bring up your grade. He uses lots of examples from films in his lectures, which is interesting.
Very good class. Very clear instructions, but most students -- like me -- have never had any teacher provide so much accountability on how to write essays. Enjoyed lectures.
This semester I have gained the knowledge and confidence in my writing that I will apply in all other classes. He describes exactly what he wants and expects. Stern yet surprisingly compassionate and understanding toward his students. Truly grateful and privaleged to have taken his class. He genuinely cares about your success! Great guy all around!
Good class. I learned a lot.
A greqat class. he's very fun and info5rmative. he's also very smart and kind. I learned so uch this past winter and it showed in my gardes this spring. Take him if you can get into the class.
Great class. Smart prof. Hard work, but I am much better and smarter because of it.
Genuinely cares about his students succeeding outside of his classroom. He is very clear on what he expects of his students in the "packets" he hands out. Come to cass open-minded and ready to learn! He's a great guy! Funny too!
I was apprehensive taking this course -- five credit hours, but Prof. Curran was very helpful. I'm getting A's now on my essays in other classes. He knows how to get you to understand. He's very smart, very humble, and very funny. You'll have fun. I know my class did.
When I took Prof. Curran's course last year, I thought I knew how to read thoroughly and interpret well. I thought because I always got good grades on my papers that I knew how to write a good essay. I learned so much from him that I now help my friends get A's on their papers. Great class.
genuinely cares about his students passing, you'll struggle with the essays but HE HELPS YOU and it is worth all the work for this class and other classes. enjoyed lectures too!
He makes you work. He makes you thik. He showed me that I didn't reason out things well. Now, a year later, I am getting much better grades and cruising thru essays. He makes you a much better student. So even though I struggled at first, I'm glad I stayed with it.
I use ratemyprofessor now because I just want t have good or excellent teachers. Mick Curran is a great teacher. He might be the smartest professor I have ever met. He understands his subject and he goes out of his way to make it understandable to you. He's funny and he's nice, too. If you can get into his class, do it. They fill up quick.
Prof. Curran does require you to attend class, take notes, read textbooks, and use your brain. I have had a lot of great professors, but he really is different in how he makes things understandable. He's upbeat and clever and fun. He makes you a much better student and person. register early. His class fills up soon.
I never understood essay writing before. I didn't know how to think through issues very well. Mr. Curran has helped me see things more clearly. His method for teaching essay writing is great. I finally understand. Great class. You'll never be the same and that's a very good thing.
His 104 class is the same as his 101 class (all the essay topics are the same). He has very little experience writing. The class itself has nothing to do with rhetoric. All of the essays are based on conspiracy theories. He grades essays almost entirely based on his stupid format which is essentially a "fill-in-the-blank" activity. AVOID!!
Really good course. Challenging, but very rewarding. Prof is great. Very smart. Also funny and caring. Overall one of the best courses I've ever taken. I learned alot
I am in English 104 this semester and I've taken prof. Curran's 101 course -- and all I can say is I have a totally different opinion than the previous student. In fact, we do engage in rhetoric and while that student claims the class ought to be avoided, I would state that it is a great class taught by a great teacher.
Great Proffesor very funny took him for the third the man's a genius wish there was more dedicated proffesors like him after actually reading his packets it all clicked to me i was a horrible writer his form of teaching is of great ease writing is better than a journalistic writer unlike other proffesors ive had I recommend his class!
I struggled for the first half of the class but that was in spite of the great professor. He was not difficult at all. He's very fun -- and he takes lots of time with you if you approach him. This class has changed me. I think better and I write much better. The guy's a professional writer. He's generous with his advice.
A strong teacher in a difficult course. Learned alot. Worked hard, but teacher was fair and helpful.
I learned a lot about film, a lot about writing essays, and a lot about how to study. The prof is great. He works with you. I probably learned more this semester than ever before.
Had him for film. Wonderful guy and professor. Very caring, smart, and funny. One of the best classes I had a Citrus, I'm actually very sad that it is over, and I almost never feel like that about classes. Take him, you won't regret it.
A good, really good rpofessor. And a great class. I showed my older brother everything we were doing in class and he agreed that it was very special. I didn't know3 much grammar before taking this class. I knew even less about writing essays. Now I feel prepared for anything. I HIGHLY recommend Mr. Curran and his methods.
Professor Curran truly knows his stuff. He make you work, but you'll learn more than you ever have. Everything he tells you is true and works. He helped me understand what essays are and why what I was writing didn't "qualify" as a essay. I learned way more than I have in any other course.
Smart and caring guy. No bull. He gives you what you need to succeed in his class and beyond. Very carrying and very funny. He enjoys and values his students. Best experience I've had in college.
A tough course, but a patient and kind and knowledgeable professor. You'll get far more than you can reasonably expect. I didn't understand his method for essay writing at first, but now I am getting A's on all my essay assignments. I walked away being a better student and person. Take him if you can get in. His classes fill up first.
Lots of reading, but it's worth it. He does "know his stuff" and he makes learning easier. He explains everything so you will finally understand how to read and interpret stories. And how to form a thesis statement. And how to structure an essay. And how to research and use primary and secondary sources. A great class. A great instructor.
Curran made this class come alive. I learned so much. In fact, months after the course, I keep reviewing his handouts and lecture notes because there's so much there still to learn. I realize some students aren't that "into" school so they may not recognize all he offers. Best value for your educational dollar on campus.
Wow! A dazzling lecturer with an encyclopedic knowledge of film and literature and philosophy and techniques. It's mid-semester and I think I've learned more in some eight classes with Curran than I have ever learned in a semester or a whole year with anone else. He makes learning fun.

Thanks Mick. I got an A on my 1st CSULA paper using the tools Mick taught us about how to create a successful university essay-instead of a report. Mick is passionate about making a difference for students. He will work with you-stay in communication. He wants to pass you. Only had to do 3 papers, very thought provoking topics. He wants u to succeed.
I am grateful for taking this course with Prof. Curran. I understand film and stories in ways I never did before. His lectures fascinate me -- the insights and details and information he provides exceeds any expectation. He also teaches you how to be a better student and a better essay writer. I now gets As on my essays in other courses.
Curran is such an easy going guy. He often openly declares that he wants to help you succeed and he wants to give you an A. He is very understanding if you need to make something up. He has high expectations for what your essays need to look like, but as long as you follow his structure packet you are golden. I wish all professors were like him.
Prof. Curran is both easy and hard. He is very approachable, very caring, and very smart. He gets you to learn in novel ways. However, do not be fooled, he is also hard for anyone is not serious or goofs off. He offers so much, but you have to be willing to do the reading and writing. Best class ever.
Mic is a very good teacher. He's a lot like Mr. Myoi from "The Karate Kid". He shows you stuff and gets you to practice outlining and looking at stories "divergently" and then suddenly at the end of the semester, you can write essays, you can interpet stories, and you can think through any subject in a "critical" way. He makes you a better person.
I had taken courses with two other outstaning English professors, but Mick showed me things and worked so hard to make him think more clearly and write more precisely. He may be the hardest working, most effective teacher at Citrus. His classes fill up early. And now I know why. He's very, very good.
Once my parents paid for a math tutor for me. She taught me more in three months than I ever learned in 11 years in school. I feel the same way about Prof Curran. I learned more in one semester with him than in all the English classes i ever took. The big difference is that Prof. Curran did the same thing for almost forty students. We ALL learned.
Thumbs up. You will like this guy and the way he teaches. He's funny and he makes everything interesting. His approach to essays and studying is very different from other teachers, but if you stay with him, you will grow and become a much better student. I am at UCLA now and every class I use his notes and I'm earning A's on my essays. Good class.
I have gotten straight A's since I took Mr. Curran's class. That includes taking tests and writing essays. He teaches so much. I have ben changed. So have my friends who took the course. He's nice, funny, caring and very, very smart. He finds ways to get you to understand concepts so you learn.
He is very fair., very smart, very kind, and very funny. I learned a lot of how to interpret stories and then how to write essays. When I applied his "tricks" to writing essays in my other classes, I stared getting A's on them. I got much more than I anticipated.
I learned a lot. Professor Curran was very helpful.
Mr. Curran IS a very good professor. Once I stopped resisting his mantra that college emphasizes "divergent thinking" and that formal essays need to demonstrate critical thinking in how you respond to the ideas you interpret and how you can defend your views, I suddenly got it. Writing is easy now. I get ideas and I learn so much more than before
All you do in class is sit in your "groups" and talk about nothing. He is not clear at all and then grades super hard. All he talks about is himself and how he has made so many people suceed but he doesnt even teach. We just sit there and do nothing
Mick is a decent guy that understands things come up in life. He was genuinely surprised when not a single person in this class knew Chicago format. He spent the majority of his "lectures" name-dropping and bragging about his work in the industry. We watched movies with little to no conversation about it after. Nice guy but I disliked the class.
Whoa. Took the same course at the same time and totally disagree that Curran "bragged" about anything. My bad maybe. I asked him to share what he knew about people and projects at the beginning of the semester. Fun guy. Fun class. Learned how to write a good research essay. Too many of the students in class were hoping for easy grades. Learned alot
Curran has a unique vision and he thinks out everything he asks you to do. But in the end, you walk away from the class feeling stronger and more confident about college. He shows you HOW to think critically -- and how to respond to ideas and how to write formal essays that get you better grades. Since his class I have aced my other classes.
I never thought I was any good at English. I didn't like stories or writing scripts. But Prof. Curran really helped me and the whole class. I'm in a new class with some of the people from that class. We all enjoyed his approach and we are all the better for it. He really knows how to connect with his students.
Best professor at citrus without a doubt. I would REALLY recommend taking his class. Took him for English 101 and 103 and kept all his handouts to writing good essays for my other classes, and began getting A's on all of them. Such a caring, funny, and intelligent teacher. Really knows what he is talking about, and wants to see his students succeed

Prof. Mick taught us so much. I've become a much better writer and thinker because of him. If you pay attention to his method of reading and interpreting, you will understand how and why he emphasizes structuring essays. I've been making As on all my essays -- even for technical classes. Sign up fast because his classes fill up right away.
Mick is by far the best professor i've had the opportunity to come across at Citrus. He is helpful and genuinely cares about your grade and whatever else is going on with you that may effect your grade. He is super understanding and accepts late work if you have a real problem. DEF recommend Mick to everyone!
k is a great r and a wonderful guy. My class has ben so good and everyone agrees tat they're getting so much help in writing stories, learning script grammar, and having fun too. A "must" class for anyone who wants to work as a writer or director or editor or actor in the "biz."
Prof. Curran gives you an all-around education and thorough preparation for writing formal essays. I really thought I knew what I was doing before I took his class, but now I realize I was just reporting and not RESPONDING to ideas. A great class taught by a classy and very helpful guy. He makes even the hardest stuff to understand easy to learn.
In all the years I've been in school and all the teachers I've had, Mick Curran is unique in how hw approaches reading, writing, and "training" students to become not only much more successful in college, but also in life. Mick lets you in on the "secrets" for learning -- and his classes fill up very quickly. If you get in, you will be changed.
A fun and informative class taught by a fun and informative professor. I learned a lot about films, stories and essay writing in a short time.
One of the most intelligent & inspirational professors I've ever taken. Really cares about the success of his students & challenges you to become a better writer; More than willing to help you and guide you in the right direction if you are struggling. Quizzes & midterm are provided before hand making it impossible to fail them. Highly recommend!
Here is good teacher that would LOVE to help you if you are majoring in this field. There were about 3 tests, and were very easy as long as you study the study guide (the answers). He tends to talk a lot about the same thing, but I respect who he is because he gives tips of the real film industry. Certainly a lot of writing, but that's expected.
I thought this class was great! It was so easy and fun. The only thing that bothered me was that he would always talk about how he wants the class to succeed but never really gives an actual lecture. Overall a great professor but tough grader when it comes to essays. Tests are easy if you study.
When taking his class you must be very aware of his directions. He gives out practice tests at YOUR ADVANTAGE so make great use of them.
Never had a teacher work harder with me. Lots and lots of writing help with handouts, tutoring, explanations. A very helpful class.
I don't know many teachers who are as committed to making sure their students learn and do well than Mr. Curran. He explains everything very clearly and connects the dots for those students who lack that skill. If someone rates Curran down, it's the student's faults not the teachers that are being posted here. An enjoyable class. I felt valued.
I really learned a lot in this class. I never felt good about writing essays and now it's easy. Our whole class learned a lot. We even still meet in groups to study together. Curran takes a good approach to helping us learn the basics. Good guy. Good class.
I loved him so much that I took him a 2nd time for english 104. He is totally willing to help and believes in all of his student's potential. He gives you so many packets that literally tell you everything to know about essay writing, follow that and give a genuine effort and you'll pass the class. As long as you try, he will help you pass.
Mr. Curran truly cares about his students and wants to work with you. If you put in the time he will see that and grade accordingly. There were very few homework assignments. Lots of reading outside of class. He expects you to come to class prepared
This is the first time I've ever posted on this site, but I want to let other students know how much Prof. Curran helped me and the rest of the class. We now know how to read thoroughly, take notes, develop thesis statements and outlines, and how to demonstrate our "critical thinking" skills. This man has changed everyone in the class 4 the better.
Mr Curran is there for you. He expects every student to show and do the work, but he's there with you. I must have spent four or five hours in going over the form and content for college essays. He really teaches you rhetoric. With what he taught me, I ended up getting all A's on my other classes' assigned essays. He's one of the best at Citrus.
Good class. Learned alot. Good teacher. Works with you.
There are a lot of good professor s at Citrus and I have taken many of them. Mick Curran is special because he really knows EVERYTHING about the subject and he works so hard to help everyone is class do well. Maybe not everyone likes his methods but they work. Take him, but sign up early. His classes fill up.
Professor Curran is great! He truly cares about his students & their success. He is clear on what he expects from you in the class. There are a few tests but they're not a problem if you study the study guide he distributes. He's a tough grader on essays but definitely gives good feedback on what needs to be improved. I would take him again!
Professor Curran is one of the best lecturers as well as story teller. His lectures give you a insight on life and how to not believe everything you are told. Life is hard he says, but he truly wants you to succeed. You want an A on your essays then follow exactly what he says. stick to the template and formats he gives you.
From the get go, he lets it be known that he is there for the students. His handouts alone are worth the price of admission! He is a patient instructor that is willing to work with his students and understands that each has their own strengths and weaknesses. He's also extremely approachable and good natured. Just do your work and you'll succeed.
Such an incredible and understanding professor. He is a big people person, I took his class during the summer and everything goes by really fast but he's understanding of it all. Would definitely take his class again, incredible lectures and I learned so much.
Easily one of if not the best English professors at citrus. Only 4 tests including a final and 2 essays which were very easy. Tests are ridiculously easy if you study for even just 5 minutes. Always gives you time to study and you get the test back the same day you take it. The only way you fail this class is if you actually try to.
Prof. Curran is probably the best Eng. Prof. I've ever had. Not only did he give great resources that I will keep with me throughout my entire college career, but he also truly cared about his students and what they learned. Working with your classmates is stressed in his classes, which helps to lessen the overall load and stress college creates.
I haven't had a class with all the other professors at Citrus, but after two classes with Mick Curran, I know he's one of the very best at this college. He has a wide expanse of knowledge that he shares generously. He's enthusiastic and teeming with energy. Who knows how old he is, but he's wise and still youthful. He makes learning fun.
I am a much better student (and person) because I took the course with Prof. Curran. I see and understand things better, particularly when they;re complex as much literature is. I think if you want to learn, he's the teacher who will help you.
Helpful
I didn't want to go to Citrus College, but I am glad I did. Mick Curran is a large reason why. He worked with me and helped me understand how to read and interpret stories in a new way. He also encouraged me and told me the professors at Citrus were among the best. He was right. They are great. I woke up, applied myself and did well. Thanks to all
I was lucky to have had Curran when I was at Citrus. He really understands what the university prof here want in the essays they assign. Because of what I learned in his English 104, I am getting all As and Bs on every assignment. He worked with me even when I was struggling. Good class. Very good teacher.
He has long lectures but they're worth it, you learn something no matter what. He's also very genuine, like he wants you to pass and he's easy to talk to.
Curran works much harder than anyone, trying to help you connect the dots. I now understand movies in a way I never did. I see the "subtext" and how each story manipulates the audiences' emotions. He is thorough and funny and very interested in making you a better student. I understand now how to write a formal essay. A good class. A great man.
Mr. Curran always showed up prepared. His quizzes were easy, if you read the material. The quizzes are based on reading the text books and lectures. Mr. Curran is an extremely caring and passionate teacher. He really wants you to succeed. He always answered your questions. I would definitely take him again for another class if I needed it.
Mick Curran is a wonderful professor and definitely the best I have ever had. He puts in all the effort and MORE, that way he can help you succeed in COLLEGE and in LIFE. There were 2 papers, 4 EASY tests, and a Final exam cumulative of the 4 previous tests mentioned. I am so grateful to have known this man. Take him and talk to him for yourself!
This a good class taught by a master teacher who somehow gets you to aspire to do your best. Prof. Curran is funny and kind and very smart. He actually wants you to learn and succeed. And he'll give you feedback and break things down so it's easier to learn. "Life by the yard is hard, but life by the inch is a cinch." A good motto for everyone.
Professor Curran is so helpful and extremely pro-student. I have to admit that I didn't try very hard to earn my B. He really cares about film and the art of film literature. We watched a movie every class and he only talks for a small time. He is funny and is a little bit of a tough criticizer, but a bit generous with grades. Great guy!
I never expected this class to be so good. It was much more than a Lit class. Mick gives you a sense of how stories work and how they affect readers. I now understand how to read and take notes and understand the "subtext" in stories. I also now know how to write much better essays. A very good class, a very good teacher.
Mick is a great guy. He cares deeply about his students and his lectures are inspiring as heck. I have never felt more inspired by anything else. I love this guy and I recommend taking him. I feel like everyone should get the chance to know Mick, it'll be a great loss if they don't.
I am so happy I took Mick Curran for English. No one has ever spent as much time with me, helping me understand concepts. At first I felt overwhelmed, but little by little I started to understand. Suddenly I got it in a flash. This guy is a genius. He understands English and stories and writing so well and he gives everyone in class the keys. Great
A very good class. He will open your eyes -- and you'll become a much better student -- if you show up and do the work. I am a much better person as well.
I thought he was too tough on my writing until I finally realized what he meant by "responding to perceived ideas" and merely reporting the plot. He changed me. He gave me a new way of seeing information and "arguments. I can never thank him enough. I get As on tests and essays now because I finally "get it." Two thumbs way up.
I worked harder in this class than any other since I entered Citrus, but I learned so much. Curran really likes his students and gives you lots of help, including extended office hours. And now I not only see movies in a new light, I think I finally understand how to write an essay. Overall, it was a fun class and we enjoyed the lectures and films.
This professor is very experienced and is willing to out of his way to make sure you understand the concepts that he is teaching. He wants all of his students to be successful and you can tell by the way that he teaches.
I liked the fact he gave us handouts to make concepts more understandable and clear. Also, I liked how he spent so much time helping me understand how to get the "subtext" and then how to respond to it with a thesis claim. I applied his "principles" to the essays I was writing in other classes and got all "A"s on them. Overall a strong teacher.
I learned a lot from Prof Curran and maybe the most important things is something he never discusses a lot, but he helped me develop much better study habits. Virtually everyone learned a lot about writing essays, but the clues he gives about taking notes and how to "learn how to learn" are invaluable. Looking back, it was my favorite class.
As a Sophomore honors student, I have taken a few classes thus far. It's clear to me Professor Mick Curran is one of the top 3 professors at Citrus. He is very clear & concise. Took him for Eng101 & he is deeply passionate about your success. He'll make you a better student & person guaranteed. Try your actual best. Study. You'll get an A.
Very few teachers will have as great an effect on your writing as Prof. Curran. He gives you the big picture and then helps you understand the process for writing from everything from reading and taking notes to writing outlines and different drafts of an essay. I am very grateful for what he showed me.
Best professor I've taken so far! So caring and sweet. The actual class was a breeze and I took it during the summer! :)
I learned so much in a short time that I am only now seeing how much I've improved in reading comprehension, note taking, outlining, and writing. My classes this fall are much easier because I took Curran last winter. He taught us how to do well in college. You will really improve as a writer.
Kind, Brilliant, and fun. My favorite class of all time. I learned more than I can say. I will never be the same. Many thanks to a excellent professor.
Friends recommended Curran to me and he turned out to be a great instructor. He really understands stories and he knows how to get you to see things (that have always been there, but you never noticed before.) Even more, he knows how to write and how to research -- and he shares lots of tips and secrets so you will grow stronger. Great class.
Professor Curran is probably one of the most genuine and inspirational men I've ever met in my life. His lectures are engaging but he literally does not teach you the material that he expects you to understand. He barely discusses hamlet, he teaches essay structure 90% of the time and he requires Chicago format for essays.
One of the very best classes I've ever taken. Curran is smart and like-able, He knows what he's doing and his goal is selfless: he wants all his students to learn and prosper. I thought I knew how to write, but under his instruction I learned not just I had been doing wrong, but he showed me the "secrets" to becoming a much better writer.
I have enjoyed this class even though many of my "classmates" don't understand what they've been given -- an unvarnished view of film as "literature." I appreciate Curran alot and hope he will continue to teach this course. Eye-opening and truly interesting.
Some times this semester I felt over whelmed but Professor Mick helped me see that I wasn't stupid, I just didn't know HOW to study and how to read for understanding or how to take notes and take tests. He showed us a way to be better students. And I finally understand and appreciate "Hamlet" in a way I never thought I could.
The worst teacher Ive had he is so picky in his grading and he fails to give directions When he did they changed last minute and it was ridiculous He gets so off topic in class and is so unorganized He doesnt teach and it was impossible to get an A with how picky he is Such a high level stress class, learned nothing from his irrelevant rants
Maybe it's because I'm older and back in school a second time, but I got more from Prof. Curran than any other prof I've had at two colleges. He doesn't suffer fools well or lazy students who don't study. If you follow his easy instructions, getting good grades and learning alot at the same time is easy.
I was in one of Prof Curran's English 101 classes this fall and I had a very favorable experience. He was patient, always ready to help -- and he puts lots and lots of stuff on Canvas for students to access and use.. His instructions were consistently clear and always the same. I got an "A" -- and I know I studied hard, but I learned so much.
One of the best professors. Great class. He made us operate as "one" -- I learned how to study and share information with other students. I learned how to read and interpret stories. I learned how to write essays. I can't believe just how much I learned in just six weeks. Mick is a great professor.
I still use the notes I took in Curran's class. They've helped me earn nothing but As and Bs in all my essays for different classes. They've been especially helpful AFTER I transferred out of Citrus. I've even let my younger brother and sister use them to help with their essays.
As a class we just rated his performance today and while I have no idea how the rest of the class responded, I think Curran is a great professor. He is always trying to find ways to connect with students -- even when they bail or just don't do the readings or the writing assignments. Curran makes you a better person and a better student.
Professor Curran definitely knows what hes talking about. Hes approachable and his lectures are really interesting! However- the only things that go towards your grade are the tests and two papers. So on top of him being an insanely tough grader you also have pretty much no possibility of redeeming your grade if you fail one test.
Best class ever. Best prof ever. I learned more in six weeks than I have in 16 weeks with other teachers. Mick understands how to read and interpret stories and things in life and he teaches you how to do it in a "rational, reasonable, and logical" way.
I learned more from Curran than any of the other professors here at Citrus and at the other colleges I've attended. He makes it easy to learn -- and you learn how to read a story for the message inside it and how to respond to that message in a formal essay.
I took his English class years ago and it was the only English course that really taught me how to write. Save the notes! You will use them many times after you transfer.
I have not liked English classes in high school because they were boring and none of the books were clear about essays and other writing concepts. Mick Curran is different. He's fun, energetic, knowledgeable, and caring. We have some students in my class who don't realize what a gift he is for them. You'll learn with Curran. He makes it easy.
I was changed this semester. I feel like I "grew up" and Mr. Curran is the reason why. He's smart, really, really smart, but he's also humble and he wants everyone to understand stories and how to read and interpret them and then how to respond to them and how to research and find "experts" who will back up your opinions. Great prof and class.
Prof. Curran has been my favorite English teacher I have ever had. He has a straight forward, easy to comprehend grading system. Basically if you do the work and show up to class you will be golden. His lectures are nothing close to boring since he tries to make every as understandable as possible with movie references. Highly recommend him.
I wish all my professors were as smart and as kind and as motivated to help students learn as Mick. He helped me become a much better student -- and a much better writer as well.
I learned more in one semester with Prof Mick than I have in four other with a dozen different professors. He's smart -- really smart -- and he finds a way to connect with you. I feel much more at ease writing essays now. And I "read" films now and understand what is happening at the subtext level. Great class. Great professor.
I learned a lot from Mick. He's a decent guy who really tries to help you. He's one of my favorite teachers of all-time.
It's taken me almost a year to post this, but better late than never. I had Mick last summer and I have to admit, I was a bit bummed that he insisted on making us write formal essay instead of my usual reports. But I am glad he did. I would not have passed any of my courses if he hadn't. He's a brilliant guy and kind. He knows what we will need.
I have learned more about becoming a better student in six weeks than I did all the years from kindergarten through high school. Moreover, Mick makes stories understandable and he helps us step-by-step become much better thinkers and writers. My favorite class of all time.
This professor is very unorganized, making this the most stressful class Ive ever taken at Citrus. Helped several students write a thesis for their paper and the still took points off for the thesis not being strong enough. Spends most of lecture telling stories and name dropping. Hes a nice guy, but doesnt know how to teach.
Worst teacher ever. His lectures are 20 mins and the rest is just group work. Everyone is usually just on their phones. So far, many of us have agreed we have no learned anything in this class.
Prof. Curran is one of the BEST professors at Citrus -- or anywhere. He requires that each student do reading, taking notes while reading, and write formal essays in stages from outlines to drafts. He is extremely well-organized and those who dislike his methods dislike actually working as they should in class. If you want to learn, take Curran.
Professor Curran is an amazing professor who truly cares about his students. He gives you everything you need to do well in his class and the rest is up to you. I took his English 103 class in the summer and it was very manageable. I definitely recommend him as a professor.
Prof. Curran is one of the very best at this school. You will learn more in one semester than you could ever realize. Plus, he cares enough to show his students how to write essays that get the better grades. He's great.
Although He is a good professor dont get me wrong, hes very caring and will help you with your writing, he does talk a lot sometimes which carries the lecture out of proportion. He is pretty straight forward with what he expects but he does give a lot of handouts to refer to which can be a bit over whelming.
Mitch was my professor for Film as Literature. In my opinion, the class was especially helpful understanding storytelling within movies and writing. Mitch often discusses his time working in the entertainment and media industry which is especially interesting. Great lectures, choice of movies and overall a positive and calm class environment.
During covid we went online and since then I have had nothing but trouble with this class. He is confusing with what he wants, posts too many files that are overwhelming and unhelpful, and he contradicts himself in everyother sentence he says. He is making everything way harder than it needs to be.
He should have been a good professor if the quarantine hadn't happened. After the class was moved to the online course, all we had was tons of trouble with him. He never really gave us any clear instruction until the very end so that my classmates and I had no idea what to do. I would never recommend him for online.
I took this course over the summer and I couldn't be more thankful to have been part of Professor Curran's online zoom class. The man is the best and truly cares about us! I can say I've learned so much in his class, don't listen to the lazy people' reviews, they just wanted the easy A. This man deserves 10 stars, I'm going to miss his class.
Professors Currans is not like any other teacher I have had the pleasure to work within my 2 years at Citrus College. He is caring, compassionate, & honestly cares about his student's success and that they have a CLEAR understanding of his work and he will go out of his way to help! I will miss the classes. Also, UTALITITIZE the GROUPS 2 he has 4 u
He's not a bad professor, it's just that a lot of the time he throws out too much information which causes the main idea of the lecture to just get buried under the rest of the words he's saying. I personally find it extremely hard to follow because I'm a straight to the point person, so all the extra details he throws out really throws me off.
Although his class will challenge you, Mick will do everything in his power to help you. There are not many other teachers on our campus who genuinely care about their students this much. Two essays the entire semester. This class will force you to put your pride aside and work hard at becoming a better writer. Take his class, you won't regret it.
I really liked the class. During COVID college has been extra hard but he really tried to help everyone out and make sure he gave information that would actually help us. Great at responding to email questions.
Professor Curran is super caring. He really makes you work for an A. His emails are very descriptive and gives lots of helpful resources to pass the class. It may seem tough, but as long as you do the work and follow instructions you will be fine. (:
He offered support at the beginning of the semester & said he would give us grace as we are all still learning but contradicts himself as he gives students backlash if they make any sort of mistake in their writing. Also the entirety of his lectures are mainly tangents and I personally didnt learn. The weight of assignments are also ridiculous.
One of the best professors he actually wants you to succeed. He prepares you 100% for tests, easy. One big essay for the semester he spends the whole time teaching to write it properly. Ask for help ANY TIME. Mine wasnt perfect but it comes down to following directions. Hes very creative, passionate about his work, and inspiring.
His class was great. Every evening after lecture he would show a movie that helped get his point across. Most of the class was a leadup to a massive paper, so be prepared to write a lot (Similar paper he had his 103 class do). I always enjoyed being in his class. Be prepared to work though: He only gives A's to the literal best work & nothing less
A great professor and individual overall. He really does want you to improve in your writing. I personally did not like his teaching style because he gets off-topic from time to time. Provides all the readings you need to write a formal essay. I honestly don't deserve the grade I got, but I would like to thank him for all his help and dedication.
Curran is absolutely wonderful because he truly wants all of his students to learn how to critically think for themselves. It is MORE than just passing this class that he cares about, he gives LIFE lessons. Seriously appreciate the information he provides, it is excellent. He made this class a breeze and is now my favorite! Thank you Prof. Curran!
Assigns great readings. I think his creative background made him choose readings with good storytelling.
Good dude, but you can tell due to COVID he does not know how to teach in an online environment. Literally every lecture was him babbling about how hes gonna help us instead of actually doing so by going over the materials. The same I want you to succeed speech was given every lecture with no real context of how behind it.
In-depth feedback and PDFs, with lecture recordings. Learned so much from the class and I am able to take it into my current job where I perform critical data analysis and have to report to my boss in details with sources such as those when finding the quotes for the formal essay. I have been getting nothing but incredible feedback from my boss!
Professor Curran adjusted exceptionally well to these unprecedented times. Every class was engaging and informative. Not only has he prepared me for future English courses, but for all critical thinking Ill face in the future. I recommend taking this course to every student, you will be set up for success now and further down the line.
I dont think online teaching his for him, but he does care. You dont have to be a strong writer to take his class and do well. We had only 5 assignments total in the class but the outline and essay take up a lot of time.
The professor was really easy to contact. Very little assignments,, but on the few assignments we have he was a very tough grader.. I spoke to some people in my class and we all had a hard time understanding his criteria,, tests were easy tho, he provided study guides for all but the final,, idk three stars because the class was both easy and hard
I found Prof. Curran to be highly intelligent, very organized, and quite kind. A few of the students in my class tried to get me to support their complaints that his materials were hard to understand. Either they were lazy or not too bright. Prof. Curran's handouts and video explanations were concise and clear. He's the best professor I've ever had
He was gone and content was empty for our online class for the first 8 weeks. Then he expected us to catch up and write a critical analysis paper. After communicating with other students the highest grade on the paper in the class was a B and the average grade was an F. Out of everyone I talked to none of use got higher than a C in the class.
He is caring and understanding. You have to put effort to follow the syllabus/handouts and watch lectures. The 1st few weeks were rough but he was in the hospital (have empathy ppl)and even then it was not hard to decipher what to do.I think people just expected their hand to be held and didnt ask questions.Tests are REALLY fair.Follow the outline.
Professor Curran may be the very best English teacher at the school. He knows so much about how to perceive subtext, and his handouts on implication and inference changed my whole way of looking at life. I am a better student for having had him. I was concerned when I saw some negative reactions on RMP, but I know now those students were wrong.
DO NOT take any of his online classes, all he's canvas page is very unorganized and all he does is send super long emails over and over with the stuff he already posted on Canvas. It is like he is teaching you from the emails, and he is making things so much harder and confusing. He talks way too much useless stuff but grade very hard, no ec at all
Somebody please teach this dude how to use Canvas. Mick would post assignments with no due date that would only show up in the modules rather than the assignments tab. He was very particular about how he wanted assignments done, and expected us to read unnecessarily long emails to understand the material. However, he provided much mercy and grace.
My experience in Prof. Curran's class was very different from the previous students'. I found him to be very organized. His CANVAS environment was logical. If a student followed the directions, read the syllabus, and the scope and sequence, it mirrored the "Modules" and was clear. Some students complain when they fail to follow simple directions.
It's almost the end of the Fall semester (2023) and I am so glad I took Prof. Curran for this online course. He really helps his students to understand and do well. I had never had to write a formal research essay before, but the PDFs he provides and the ZOOM recorded lectures make it easy to learn. I recommend him to my friends because he cares.
A fantastic teacher, has a strong personality, and makes you inspired to take his classes.
Class was completely asynchronous. Students took this as I don't need to do anything with 3/4 of the students getting Bs and Cs because they didn't do anything. I received an A in the class simply by following along with the lectures and the formatted outlines. Literally just do the damn work. Curran is an amazing professor, I highly recommend him.
As the Winter Semester comes to an end, I enjoyed being in your course by adapting to new things that I had never learned before. I thank you for preparing me and my peers for the future steps we will eventually take at the University. Thanks to you, I met two amazing people since we are put into groups so we could help out one another.
Curran, is by far the best professor you can ever have in college. I would recommended everyone to take him if it is a choice for English. he is very understanding and caring for his students. he wants to see you succeed and will be there to support you and at the end no college professor cares this much for his students and its very helpful.
Mick (Keith) Curran is a caring professor who wants students to succeed. His Canvas organization may take adjusting, but his materials are clear. Utilizing resources like unstuckstudy ai along with the textbook can help navigate the class.
I never liked English courses before, but this past spring I took English 103 with Mick Curran and understand now how to read for meaning (subtext) how to respond to it, and how to research and cite validating reference sources. Mick was great. He helped everyone in my class in ways that helped us improve and learn. My highest recommendation!!
I just saw a review that matches my own experience taking a course with Mick Curran. I have been insecure about my writing ability and so I hated having to take English courses, but Mick showed me how easy it is to do well. He is an excellent teacher and his CANVAS set-up is clear and easy to follow. He is also very kind and works with you.
He is literally the worst professor I've ever had. I have reason to believe he is writing good reviews on his own page because every student in our class struggled. He is incredibly condescending and tells you you deserve an F, but he believes "in grace and mercy," and that is the only reason he is giving you a C.
I am so disappointed with his rating because there's no way that he has the rating that he has now. I took the class based on these ratings and there's a complete opposite. He had technical difficulties the entire semester & still expected things to be turned in with no clear due dates whatsoever.. on top of that, he was honestly not a fair grader
Great professor! He cares about his students, and he want to help them learn and do well. There is a good amount of reading for this class, but if you space it out, you should be fine. He offers great feedback, and is clear about what it takes to get an A. Pay attention in class, do the reading, and give yourself plenty of time for the essay.
I have mixed feelings about this class. Not only was the class hard, but the directions for our assignments were also difficult to understand, and this professor waited until the last week of school to grade our assignments.
Professor Curran basically tries to reteach you years worth of writing. It's a difficult course, but rewarding. Very willing to help, and will finetune things you reach perfection. DO NOT MISS CLASS. If you take this in winter, only take this class or one much easier one. Not the kind of class you can procrastinate in or half*ss.
He taught me more than any other teacher or professor I've had. Some students do not want to actually study and learn. I paid attention and I finally understand subtext and how to write a formal advocacy research essay. Just follow his directions and you will learn more than you can imagine.
