I know its early to rate. This is for you to take him. Mr. Bruce really care about his students. His lectures are clear and funny. No stress. easy grader. Test review a week before. He will make sure that everyone in class understood before going forward. Give you time to take notes. Explain many examples. Just give him 45 minutes study a day.
Best Professor I've ever had!! He's caring, he gives you a review for the test a week before, he is hilarious, and also brutally honest (in a positive way). Mr. Bruce wants to see his students succeed and will make math fun for you!! I strongly recommend taking him, especially for College Algebra.
He is a very passionate professor and wants to see his students succeed, he is very clear of what he expects from you, so if you do what you are told you'll definitely pass his class. He is a very interesting, funny and honest professor who will go over many example problems as well as to give you a test review a week before the test.
Professor Mickell Bruce teaches very fast without breaking down the topics. Professor Bruce assigns loads of homework. I taught myself the whole semester because Professor Bruce's teaching method didn't help me. However, he will work with you when wanting to bring your grade up!
Mr. Bruces covers a lot of material during lectures and makes it relatable. He encourages students to ask questions when they do not understand no matter how "dumb" you may think the question is. He doesn't assign excessive homework but he wants you to learn. If you make good grades on the test, you'll pass tremendously.
He is a great professor. As long as you show up to all of the classes a and do all of the homework you will do good in this class. There is a lot of homework like an assignment after every class. But its very manageable and he also will give opportunities to bring up bad test grades.
Professor Bruce is cool. He's committed to seeing his students succeed. He asks everyone to commit to 45 minutes of studying per day. Do what's required and visit him during office hours for help. You'll do great! Prof. Bruce isn't feeling the virtual classroom and he uses a lot of opportunities to express his frustration. It makes me laugh!
If you're worried about taking College Algebra like I was, take Professor Bruce! He explains all the work very clearly & is able to put any problems into simpler terms for anyone to understand. Even though he always said he wished we were all in-person, he did an AMAZING job teaching online. He's super chill and one of my favorite professors ever!
Professor Bruce is funny and that's about it. He got annoyed with us because he was overwhelmed with grading and at the end didn't post our grades at all. Had no idea where we were. He kept saying every test grade above a certain level would replace the last... but he didn't explain enough to do well the 1st time. 1st class I've ever failed.
He makes you like math. I used to be very bad at math. I used to be intimidated by it and I avoided taking math classes because I was afraid of failing. I saw his ratings and took a chance. It paid off, I now feel more confident in math. Im taking his cal 1 class now. Hes a good professor, and cared about his students. Highly recommend him!!!!!!!
This is my second time having him as my professor. I wish I had him for college algebra, I took him for pre-cal and this semester for cal 1. He is a good teacher he is supportive and wants to see you learn and succeed. He is very understanding, he takes into consideration that students have jobs and have other classes as well. Treat him well!
He spends the first 20-40 minutes of every class, in the last half of the semester, complaining. He is very helpful though. Id imagine he would be an OK in person professor but online was unbearable, Always switching formats, grading criteria and more to make it "easier" but really just made it more complicated for himself leaving everyone unhappy.
I have been out of school for over 15 years and Mr. Bruce inspired me to stay focused. He is always available outside of class and ensures you understand the basics through to the topic. He checks for understanding. I appreciate his ability to hold everyone accountable and gave all the info to be successful. He is awesome so take his class!!!!!!
Mr. Bruce was a real Jamaican gem he is pretty straightforward and blunt so if you are a little snowflake dont take him. There are no quizzes just mymathlab homework which isnt a lot and your exams. The online reviews are word for word so take pics of the examples. Hes super laid back and will compromise with you on your scores.
I am so bad at math and I have had no problems in this class. He will work with you until you understand the material! I highly suggest you take his class if you want an A in math. The test is the same as the review and the homework is easy.
Highly recommend! This is not an easy class, but Prof Bruce LOVES math & is so funny so he brings enjoyment out of the pain lol. He is such a neat guy & really does want the best/success for his students. He's encouraging but realistic with you. I'm signing up for his Calc 1 class & am excited for it because of him! Just wish it were in person :/
THIS MAN DOES NOT RECORD HIS LECTURES, I REPEAT HE DOESN'T RECORD LECTURES. If you by any chance miss his class, you're honestly screwed. Or even having to look back on what he said, you won't be able too. Take at your own risk
Professor Bruce is truly amazing; he is pretty laid back and upfront with his expectations. He does not record lectures which may be a problem for some, but why go to college if you are not going to attend class? He is willing to help his students as long as they put in the effort.
Great professor that genuinely cares about his students success! Very clear about expectations & grading. Only teaches what you need to know so his lectures & homework DIRECTLY align with what is on exams. HIGHLY RECOMMEND him if you want a SOLID foundation & are going to be taking upper level math courses. Put in the work & you should do well!
I'm conflicted about this professor! This class is NOT an easy A. Tons of homework. TONS. He's passionate about math and it shows. He doesn't record his lectures and he takes role to monitor attendance. He doesn't teach, he just goes through the examples he emails. He gives you plenty of chances to make the highest grade possible. Please study!!
Professor Bruce is a fantastic math teacher. His classes are very enjoyable and he is very passionate about mathematics. He brings an uplifting attitude to the class and provides a very high morale. He puts the material into ways students can understand easily. Math is a very difficult subject but Mickell does a great job at making it tolerable
While Bruce has a lot of personality and can be funny at times, he's awful at teaching. He goes on random tangents out of the blue, shows up 5-10 minutes late, rants for 15 minutes about how half the class isn't here. I gave up on asking questions in class because he just says "you should be mathematically mature enough to figure that out"
I really appreciate Professor Bruce! He is understanding for everyone's situations regarding the pandemic and wants his students to succeed but still wants them to learn! I've taken him fall and spring semester. Prof Bruce if you're reading this, I appreciate you!
An entertaining guy, but I'm not a fan of him as a teacher. He is condescending, he is unorganized, he wastes time, and he checked out at the end of the semester by not being available via email or during office hours the week of the final. He failed to cover all of the sections, he said he would send the material to us via email and didn't do it.
He is a great professor! I took his precal class and loved it so I took his Calc class this semester and it was great! He offers some extra credit, but only if you have shown him that you are trying. For example, if you do the homework and go to class he will try and help you out. If you take his class study the test reviews they are life savers!
Need to attend all classes. He is very very fast. And you don't need to confirm "GoodToGo" too fast either, PLZ! No record - online class. Offer extra credits for the first 2 tests. He doesn't post grades, u need to come meet him. You must have a strong math spirit to feel his passionate. Math is hard, but no he'll give tons of HW to help you :)
You'll be exploiting your time for just his class. He's going thru his lecture as fast as the hurricane. After 1 test with 9 sections, 2-3 weeks later u will have another 9 sections test coming up. No time to stop, and he'll cram as much as he can in your head. Not recommended for someone working, or no need the class for your major. 5 tests total.
A good guy but his "let it flow" teaching style didn't work for me. Maybe it would be different in person, but I would not recommend taking this class if you have to be online. He DOES NOT record lectures!! I Felt he went fast through the lectures and often crammed it with info. The semester is almost over and he has not posted a single grade.
Bruce is a great professor who cares about his students. He's very funny and gives LOTS of extra credit. You cant pass this class if you don't work hard. If you're not a STEM major you might not want to take this class if you don't have to, its not easy especially if you're not willing to work hard. Makes math fun and easy to understand.
Awesome proffesor, great dude
PreCal is a difficult subject, but thankfully this professor doesn't make it any harder than it is. In fact, Professor Bruce has a knack for simplifying rather difficult concepts. He's incredibly engaging and is one of the funniest professors I've had the pleasure of learning from. I would recommend taking his course to anyone willing to learn.
If you can take this professor please do! He is there to help you succeed! His lectures are fun because he is just so passionate about math. He is very fair when grading exams and clear on what he expects from his students. He made me love Calculus!
Take Professor Bruce. He presents only the relevant information and does not expect more from him students than he is willing to give. Genuinely cares about his students success, as long as you put in some time studying and preparing you will not only get a good grade but also learn the material.
Best professor at ACC. Bruce cares for his students and makes sure everyone understands the material. He will make you love math. Took him for PreCalc & Calc 1. If you commit to studying everyday for at least an hour you will get an A+ in the class
Professor Bruce is cool. Beggining his lectures quiet and slow paced taking attendance as he gets into his self proclaimed "flow" he becomes much more talkative and engaging to the class. He will occasionally stop class for a brief 1-2 minutes and talk about whatever I took it as a brain break. Does not record classes. Funny guy and caring.
I know a lot of students really liked his class because he's energetic and likes math, but what they haven't considered is that he's energetic and likes math. That means that he goes very fast and doesn't understand how other people don't understand math. He's very into "getting into the flow" but it just feels like being shoved into fast water.
Overall I think he is a decent professor, but he is definitely not for everyone.
Bruce a very energetic professor with passion for mathematics, which is great but is also his where the class gets tough. He goes through the material very fast and if you don't know the material beforehand or have struggle retaining math, the class will be really painful. He's a good professor, but he's just not for everyone.
Be critical of the negative reviews, as for all of Prof Bruce's quirks, he is an incredibly charismatic and understanding teacher, and he makes sure to litter his lectures with witty apothegms and analogies. The homework is always comprehensive but never excessive. If you do the reviews, you'll get easy A's on the 5 tests. Be prepared to "flow." :)
He teaches and engages very well. Very fun professor. The work on tests is difficult but he has office hours and homework that can help you. He gives you the resources to fix your grade, he allowed our grades to go up with anything over an 85 on a test, it would be applied to your previous exam. He cares about his students and your understanding.
Truly cares about every student and wants u to pass. Make sure to do aleks review before the test , it will really save you on the test. He is very funny, gives credit opportunities and just make sure to take notes in class and practice aleks hw/reviews everyday for an A. Trust me the best math professor u could aSK FOR!!!
The most caring prof you'll ever get. He doesn't want you to fail. His exam reviews are VERY important. Don't slack behind for homework (ALEKS), you won't have enough time to catch up because it is heavy. He's funny and has catch phrases (still stuck w me). Keep up with class, work with him and score an A! Heavy lecture,100% attention required.
Great professor that genuinely cares about his job and his students. Emails copies of lectures for online use beforehand so you can easily keep up, and the homework he assigns is harder than the actual tests. Always do the test review online and the pre-test handout and you're sure to pass at the minimum!
Pre-cal is hard af but this professor teaches well and has a sense of humor, he is Jamaican and wants his students to pass! He does what he can to prepare you for the test and quizzes.
Absolutely the best prof ever! Truly cares for his students & wants everyone to pass. You are responsible for your grades. Put in the effort, participate in class, talk to him and give it your best - you are guaranteed to get what you deserve. I stuck w him for precalc and calc I and I aced both classes. I'm transferring & still keep in touch.
I took Cal 1 online, and he does not teach at all, so his lectures are pointless. He forbids recording, erases as he goes & moves way too fast. Need clarification? He gets offended. His repeat students secretly record lectures & use outside resources/apps, which for me is a waste of time & tuition. He's truly awful, half the class dropped, BEWARE!
Be ready to teach yourself Calculus! His lectures are pointless, he goes over content at warp speed, expects you to already know it, and hates questions. To make up for this, my classmates skipped lectures and taught themselves using Khan Academy. Luckily, lecture recordings (prohibited) were shared by classmates, otherwise, I would have failed!
Positive experience. Even a question that would get you laughed out of college algebra, he would be willing to pause and explain from the bottom up why something works the way it does Never felt ashamed or hesitant to ask him questions about the material. Keep up with homework and do his reviews, you will get an A. Requires attention and effort tho
The reviews are very useful and the test mirrors them pretty much. There is also extra credit offered for a math class which is pretty rare. Overall if you do the reviews and know how to do them you will at least get a B. If you don't know the reviews you'll do badly, you just have to put in the work it's not that hard.
I would not recommend this professor as I was frustrated and very stressed. His lectures did not provide guidance and I found teaching the homeworks and reviews by myself were more helpful. He does not respond to emails ever and is not accommodating for any personal issues at all.
He made the lectures very interesting. There is a lot of HW but that was expected for a summer class, and he even extended the deadline for submitting the HW. He is very passionate about the subject and if you need an A, you need to study every 2 days at least. Also, his reviews comprise 95% of the test.
+ Tests similar to Reviews AND HW (but time given was way too short to review both). Was fair and extended HW deadline since the WHOLE class could not finish in time. - Gets offended when someone asks a question. Does not care if students understand. Rarely responds to emails. You will be teaching yourself Calculus (thank God for Class GroupMe).
Even though it was a summer course, he was very thorough in explaining every concept we came across. He only gives HWs you need and extensive reviews for tests (reviews and tests are very similar). Never have I seen a professor more passionate about mathematics or the success of his students. Easy going and doesn't stress. Get ready to dance.
Say what you will, but I enjoyed taking Bruce as a professor. Just as learning Calculus over the summer isn't easy, teaching it is no breeze either. I noticed multiple times when the time crunch frustrated him. Despite this, he never left us hanging. He's a passionate educator who wants to see you succeed. Don't fear the negative reviews.
good professor if you pay attention, you need to study, half the glass dropped cuz they didn't study
This professor is straightforward and truly wants the best for his students. Going in, I was not a math person, my goal was to achieve a B, and I would've been thrilled with a B. His reviews were exactly like the test, he doesn't play any games or try to trick you on the tests It's simple. Do the reviews And homework one hour a day. Get an A
I took two classes with him, College Algebra (Summer 2023) and Precalculus (Fall 2023). He is one of the most caring teachers I have had and takes mental health VERY seriously. Homework: it is online (ALEKS), and he leaves it open the entire semester, so you can redo it as many times as you would like for practice (test reviews excluded).
Many say not to miss his lectures or else you'll fall behind, however, I've had an easy time catching up when I did! The homework is KEY to passing and understanding concepts! His tangents are quite funny and random but it's what you end up loving the most. He does come off intimidating at first, but he is truly a loving soul as time goes on. :)
Very engaging and dynamic with how he lectures. Homework can be long (Pearson MyLab) but doable if done early EVERY time. HW can easily pile up. He's very open to helping each person understand the topics. I didn't need a separate textbook to understand. Like another review, he can appear intimidating at first, but he's actually welcoming!
Lectures: fast and confusing(16 week). I was in his online class: no recording, gets mad at questions, long hw on aleks. Tests: reviews given 2 days before, consists of aleks problems. You'll be teaching yourself calc. He tried adding another unit to the test 2 days before given. I struggled, average for the class was a 70. 5 tests are 60% grade.
Do not take his course online or during the summer. He excels during the in person 16 week course. If you study daily, you will excel in his course. He provides an exam review before each exam that contain similar questions. Each of the four tests are worth 15%, 20% for homework, and 20% for the final exam. He also gives bonus points frequently.
TAKE HIM! Dr. Bruce is very caring. If you don't have proper math background, all you have to do is study a little harder. The exams are similar to the aleks review given a few days before, so if you can complete it with no issue, you're set. He also allows enough opportunity for extra credit points for future exams. Hw is a little tedious.
Honestly, I am pretty sure he saved most of the class at the end due to test grade replacing lowest grade. He doesn't record the lectures, though, which is the only downside of this class. He is a little tough, but that's the kind of professor that actually makes you learn the subject! I am glad I didn't drop the class halfway through the semester.
Put in the time outside of class and you will be fine. You won't absorb Calc through osmosis. He's a solid professor and human being.
Genuinely the worst professor I've ever had. Can barely understand him and had to self learn everything. Gave an absurd amount of homework everyday and gave no help or clarification. Pretentious attitude and got mad at students when they asked questions.
Professor Bruce is very passionate in lecture and clarifies any doubts you have during office hours, meeting you where you're at knowledge wise. While he doesn't assign more homework than he would do, some concepts require more practice than others so you should be doing problems from the textbook as well. A study group is key!
This professor will go off topic and is always late, he is a D1 Yapper and does not do a good job at explaining. I had to teach myself from the book.
Don't ever take professor Bruce. You WILL be teaching yourself all the material. He just reads off of slides and doesn't actually teach you the material and expects you to know everything already(doesn't actually TEACH). He WILL NOT RESPOND TO EMAILS. When I tried to email him do double check for something and he didn't respond at all.
Take him. Put in the work outside of class and you will be fine. Good human being and professor.
I took this class last semester, Professor Bruce make the class easy and fun, Definitely don't miss a class, He gives you every possibility to get an A, currently in his precalc class, registering for his calculus 1 in the spring
Took this class last semester, currently taking precalc, just registered for his calculus 1 class next semester, amazing professor, cares that you get a good grade, if you put in the study time he asks you'll get an A, highly recommend.
Only one complaint: I tried bringing my flashcards to the gym and got sweat all over them.
His lectures can be kind of confusing at points but if you ask question he will explain very well. I found the homework to be a bit overwhelming honestly but if you aren't taking many other classes you should be fine.
Took him for algebra-calc 1: Take him because he makes an A very doable. HOWEVER, his lectures rarely taught me anything, so I spent a lot of time learning on my own. I'm confident that if I had not gone to a single lecture, I would still have an A. Hw is a little overwhelming, but no due date. Gives A LOT of opportunity to improve your grade.
Just not a good professor, would definitely not take again
Almost all exam grades. Extremely slow grader. No recorded lectures. Blackboard isn't very organized. No course schedule, just vibes. Lectures are easy to understand though. Lots of trig, so good if you are taking more calc after, not so good if it is a gen ed req.
Uses ALEKS for HW, which takes twice the work to complete. This course simply has too much in it, b/c of that, you will be learning chapters that are not on the current test. This was my biggest hurdle. However, he does give ample opportunities to redeem yourself. Do yourself a favor and learn the trig functions and identities before class starts.
Dropped his class due to his lack of professionalism in the class room. He would make passive aggressive remarks frequently to other students when they ask questions. ACC has a lot of great staff members and professors don't make the mistake of picking someone who isn't happy to work with you and makes learning difficult.
I should have known better. I saw the bad rating before and thought whatever I'll just fly under the radar from a bad professor but soon dropped out of his class because of the passive aggressive remarks frequently made to other students. ACC has a lot of great professors please pick someone who will who takes genuine interest in teaching others.
Class was hard because of requirements to squeeze as much pre-cal content into one semester as possible. Professor Bruce did the best he could with what he was given. Best professor to take for this class at ACC, especially online. Very difficult class in general, great professor to get me through it.
Wow, an unbelievably hard class and his way of teaching made it even harder. He is constantly "behind" and in a rush. He has no shame in absolutely shaming the class for not getting grades that are up to his standards. He doesn't make it easy to memorize the countless formulas. HARD exams, at least 20 questions w/ only 2 hrs.Not evil, just tough...
Dropped within the first few weeks of class due to sour remarks towards those of us who were a little confused. Has a bit of an attitude. Would not recommend.
Really tough grader, he only does 4 test but each one has a lot of topics which makes it really complicated, will take a point off for any detail
Honestly a fun class to be in. He is engaged and enthusiastic about math and wants his students to do well. It is a hard class with dense material, so you have to study consistently. Homework is due at the end of the semester. Tests are doable if you are comfortable with the reviews without looking at your notes. Gives more points than he takes.
This is a class for people who are willing to put in the effort. He can be intimidating at first but in reality all this professor wants you to do is succeed. You put in the work and he will reward you. Also he is hilarious, highly recommend for people who are really wanting to get a grasp of Calc 1.
DO NOT TAKE, at least not online.Horrible experience, taking his class dragged my entire semester down and made it an absolutely grueling 16 weeks. Does not record lectures, no class notes or material, gives absolutely no time to catch up, get ahead, or even prepare for upcoming exams the week prior. Miss one class due to a cold and you're doomed.
This may be a problem with the school curriculum, but we were going over new material for the comprehensive final a week before taking it. Really sucks because your whole grade comes almost entirely from the tests. To be fair, he does provide lots of opportunities to replace bad grades.
DO NOT TAKE, at least not online.Horrible experience, taking his class dragged my entire semester down. Does not record lectures, no class notes or material, gives absolutely no time to catch up, get ahead, or even prepare for upcoming exams the week prior.
Maybe his in person class is good but his online class was incredibly poorly run. He clearly doesn't know how to teach online and stated he hated it in his first class, and messed up on almost every test then blamed his own students. He gave us 100 questions of review for the final saying that it was a good approximation and it covered a 3rd of it.
Class was very poorly run. He should reconsider teaching an online course if he does not want to be there. He does not respond to emails and if he does, he does not thoroughly read them. On numerous occasions, I or another student would ask a very straightforward question about protocol and he acted as if we were not paying attention. Do not take.
The Goat if you don't study that's on you literally cant fail
Great professor, he teaches well and wants the students to actually understand the material. If you need help, I would recommend his office hours where he helps you understand what you're doing and where you go wrong. 10/10
Take anyone else. I had to take him twice, unfortunately, for two different classes, and I've never dreaded being alive more than when I was taking his classes. He is the WORST at teaching so you will have to teach yourself. JUST DONT DO IT. HE'S MEAN. If he doesn't like you, he will not help you pass the class.
