She really makes an effort to let her students know that she hasn't been teaching long. She has yet to figure out a way to effectively hand out tests, much less write tests. 15 minutes went by before all the tests were handed out, and she had to throw out a couple of the test quesions: repeats and errors.Should have looked over it 1 time... just 1.
Horrible prof. This was her first semester teaching and lectures are almost useless. often in lecture she gives wrong information and has to be corrected by students. She's a cell bio professor attempting to teach genetics. To keep students attending class she includes one test question per lecture. Its all studying from her notes.
Her teaching and tests take to getting used to, but she is really a good professor who cares about her students and truly does want them to pass. Very easy to approach! The class overall was not difficult; she taught the most pertinent information and mainly tested on what she taught!
Ms. Powell is a great professor. she is willing to help students after class or in her office ,she is always available for her students.tests come from the lecture, but to be in the safe side read the book too, it is very helpful. attend si session she picks question from there sometime.i would take her again for futher class. nice and very helpful
awsome teacher, very nice and freindly with the students, tries her best to make the contents clear for everyone. test are not hard, just make sure to read her powerpoint and and lecture and u will fine. highly recommend her:)
Go to SI and do the questions at the end of the chapters and you should do fine. I would definitely reccomend her for Genetics and anything else she may teach.
Terrible teacher, does not know how to present information, is wrong on many occasions. She does not cover all the informations she tests on because she uses test-bank instead of writing the tests from her notes. sock puppets to present material... She is rude in private and says the tests designed to test test taking skills along with informati
I don't understand anyone saying she is a terrible teacher. I am enjoying her class. She is very clear and very helpful. She tests on the material covered in the notes and in lecture. She is very friendly and approachable. She even gives you some of the questions that are going to be on the test if you show up for lecture. She is a wonderful teache
I had to take this class for my major. My friends said it was easy, that her test questions came straight from her lecture notes. Well I go to lecture and I read the textbook and I have a borderline B in that class. There's not way to do well that I have found. SI isn't very helpful this time around either. Definitely don't recommend this class.
Dr. Powell is an absolute idiot! The class is ridiculously easy, but don't expect her to teach you anything. She would often give incorrect information in lecture but except us to know it correctly for the test. So, I suggest not going to lecture, as she'll only confuse you. Just read the book - the questions are exactly like examples in the book!
I had her for genetics last semester. Her test questions come from her lecture, powerpoint slides, and example exam questions. She is very bright and helpful. The people on here calling her an idiot may want to check the mirror because I had no problem with her class. You just have to show up for lecture and do a little studying. I made an A w/o SI
Dr. Powell is not a bad teacher. The problem is that she is an extremely annoying human being. She spends way more time than is necessary covering material. Sitting through her class is a tremendous chore. It's easy enough to just skip and read the book, but her Blackboard page and syllabus are awful.
I am so shocked to read some people's reviews of Dr. Powell! I think she is a much higher caliber teacher than most UAB has to offer. She is knowledgeable, helpful, and interested in her students learning. The material covered was as in-depth as it could have been, but I took a graduate course cross listed as a 200 BY. I think she's a great prof
easy to follow, very helpful
About the same as most professor for this level course, trying to weed out the ones who aren't dedicated to it.
I had her for Genetics and cell Biology. She is neither geneticist nor cell biologist; avoid her courses.
Powell does not make you attend lecture, but must to take notes. She has 5 tests and no final, but her 5 tests are somewhat difficult. Overall a hard and tedious class. The class is really in depth and requires a lot of studying in order to do well. She does not scale, but gives a few extra credit points on a few tests. Be prepared to study hard!!
Powell is somewhat scatter brained when it comes to lecture. There were 4 test in this class and no comprehensive final. Overall the tests are very detailed and you must study hard to do well on them. Lots of powerpoint slides!!! Class is tedious and not very interesting. She will write a few things on the board, but most is covered on the slides.
This class is pretty difficult. Her tests are pretty detailed and really hard. The study guides only help if you attend leture. Which is BORING...but shes super helpful and she will help you out grade wise if she sees you put in an excellent effort to improve.
The first 2 tests were difficult but the last 3 were pretty reasonable. Class attendance is a must, tests are straight from the notes. Use the exam study guide. Easy to see her for help in office. She makes class pretty interesting with real world applications and metaphors. I enjoyed the class overall but studied hard for an A. Would recommend.
VERY easy tests. Yes, several slides to know, but the material is really easy. You simply have to read a couple of times the slides before the tests. A good advice too, even though you don't need the textbook nor to read it, still buy it and do the problems at the end ONLY to make sure you got the material remembered for the tests. Easy A class.
Very hard class. Cell Biology is interesting with her, but it seems impossible to pull an A in her class. The tests are all short answer and fill in the blank or drawing structures and diagrams. Overall super hard.
All of the test material comes directly from lecture. You don't need to purchase the book; however, you have to go to class. Tests are all short answer that includes some drawing. Not bad. I pulled an all nighter on one and still made an A. Write your notes over 2x & you'll be fine. She's the only professor I've had that's passed out candy in class!
Pretty difficult class because lots of material. Write down everything she puts on the board a bit of what she is saying and draw all diagrams. Your only source will be your lecture notes. Make sure you review early enough so you can ask her for clarification before exams (which are very specific-but nothing not covered in class, so show up).
Dr. Powell was very helpful, and as long as you attend the review sessions before each test, the exams are not bad.
Tough class. Exams contains short answer so you really need to know and memorize the concepts and information. Complete the study guide and go to her to clarify concepts and work through the guide. Study early, ask questions. Notes sometimes lack description of diagrams so go to class for explanations (or her office if you have to miss).
Not a regular professor for this course, but a super easy one. Simple tests and generally useless lectures. Read the book, and you'll be just fine. A nice lady, though she tends to go off on random tangents.
Dr. Powell is a great professor. She's really nice, and she clearly tells you what you need to know for the test. Her tests aren't bad if you study your notes well. Go to class.
This class was pretty tough (for me). I chose it because it was for non-bio majors: but I'm surprised there was SO MUCH INFO. She spoke the entire hour, every class, the entire semester. There were 4 tests, online homework, online discussions, & one project. She posts her power point lectures on canvas for us. She teaches well but I hate the course
This class was a good class for anyone who have to have a biology credit yet do not care much about biology. Her test are the only hard thing about the class but thats college. Show up, do the few homework assignments, and study you should do fine.
Dr. Powell is a good professor. Don't bother buying the book, because it sat in the corner of my room. The tests are pure lecture, and if you record the lectures and are able to understand what she is saying, as well as answer the study guides that she posts, you should make an A. Test is 35 questions of all free response and fill in the blank.
Lecture heavy class. Homework assignments like once a month, tests were based off of lecture
Dr. Powell lectures with power points (material from the book) and she supplements that with drawings on the white board. The were 4 tests, each 25% of the lecture grade (the class grade is 70% lecture 30% lab), but there were bonus quizzes in the lecture before the test. Would take again. Tests are hard unless you study go to SI and mock exam!!
Her powerpoints she posts on canvas are what you need to study for her exams, as well as writing down her notes during lecture as she goes through the power points. Exams are heavily application-based and the lecture grade is based on just the 4 exams. Very little extra-credit opportunities.
I personally did not enjoy taking Dr. Powell's class. I started going to the lectures only to find that she reads directly off of a powerpoint, and her tests are difficult if you have never taken Biology. With the large class, I couldn't make a connection with her.
Your only grades come from the 5 Exams, so if you do not study then you will not do well. Buy Mastering Online because you get 5 points added to every test if you do the online homework for each chapter (really helps!!). She reads from the powerpoint but it is still important to go to class because she will give you some test questions and answers!
I took Powell for both BY123 and BY124. After two semesters with her as my professor, I can say confidently that I am NOT a fan of her style of instruction. She reads right from her ppts, and she is inconsistent. I got an 89.4 in 123 and she did not round it (did for another girl with an 89.2), but got an A in 124. These classes are hard. Study!!!
I personally loved Powell, but her class is not easy, especially given lab, and you need to really know the info. If you go visit her during office hours, she can be more helpful. Very big on application, especially with metabolism, since that is one of her passions. If you go to class, she'll recognize you and will be more willing to help you out.
THIS CLASS IS A WEED OUT CLASS. Just thought I would tell you because nobody told me beforehand. Powell's lectures are not helpful at all! All she does is read off of her slides which are based off of the textbook. To do well on the test, you need to actuallyknow EVERYTHING about each concept and all she does is read, not teach. Lookupvideos UseSI.
Worst class ever! Do not take Dr. Powell! Her exams are nearly impossible to pass and she offers no extra credit. Half of the class dropped but the only reason I stayed because I had a really good lab TA. She only reads the slides during class and goes extremely fast through them. Office hours were by appointment which seemed never available.
If you want to enjoy biology don't take her. She will make it the most miserable semester of your life. She lectures for the while time allowed, but when it comes test day, there is nothing on the test that she lectures about. I hope you like to teach yourself, cause instead of learning about the glycolysis, you learn how to barely get by.
Only grades are 5 exams all multiple choice. Buy the textbook and do the mastering homework for each test, you'll get 5 bonus points added to each test. She reads off the powerpoint in lecture but tells you what you need to know for exams so it's beneficial to go. No attendance. Exam questions are not that hard if you study the ppt, straightforward
Powell basically just reads off the powerpoints so a lot of people never go to class. The last class she offers bonus points to people who go. Do the mastering and you'll get 5 points back on each exam. Most of the test questions are from the mastering, the study modules, and mock exam.
She makes too many mistakes in the class
I don't understand the bad rep Dr. Powell gets. I took her for BY124 this summer and I thought she was great. Tests were 55-60 MC questions and everything you needed to know for them was in the textbook. Read the chapters, go to supplemental instruction, and an A is easier to obtain than not.
BEWARE!! do not take this professor if you care about your gpa. you don't gain anything from attending lecture because she reads off the powerpoint. Tests don't reflect the lectures if you do attend. No matter how much studying you put in, an A is only accessible through pure luck.
I took microbiology and enjoyed it. Lectures didn't involve much information that wasn't on Canvas, but it was still informative. I think you could possibly get by without going to lecture much, but there were sometimes bonus points. It was also possible to get 2 extra percentage points on each exam for doing homework on Pearson.
Biology at UAB is tough in general. In lecture, you're only graded on four tests. Dr. Powell did give extra credit for the final exam. I recommend taking biology by itself in the summer if you can.
AVOID if you can!!! Awful teaching ability. She teaches straight from PPT in class and often confuses herself by forgetting material mid sentence. Her exams are a very good test of your ability to understand the topic and critical thinking, but don't expect as easy A (extremely difficult). If you think you are prepared for the exams, think again.
Dr. Powell is a great person, but her class is difficult. Not a bad professor- the class is just very difficult already. No one goes to lecture because everything she tests on is in the book and not her powerpoints. She gave a few bonus quizzes. Heavy application based tests so get ready to work.
She really hinders students instead of enabling them. Her lectures are LONG PP version of the text, and overall not helpful. Reading the book is much better they do a better job explaining. 4 tests (70%)+30% lab. Assign unrealistic # of chapters that you're on your own learning. Takes off pts for using hints on HW! Would not take/recommend her!
I think of Dr. Powell and think of Einstein's quote "if you can't explain it simply, you can't understand it" Copies from the book and reads it. Makes no effort to do exercises to promote understanding. If you ask, she thinks you're trying to trick her for exam questions. We all felt completely solo! Save your money and wait for a good instructor.
I took this course in Summer 2020, during covid. it got moved online which was fine. But she posted her lecture videos and they each ranged from 45 min-1 hour and 15 minutes. she also read straight off the slide the whole time. complete torture. then she required you to read the book as well for each exam that covered 5-7 ch. her exams were hell.
Grade is calculated solely from exams, so you have to do well, but they're pretty easy! Just take detailed lecture notes and study those. However, her lectures weren't the greatest, and were often slow, but I am willing to attribute this to the online formatting. She's super sweet and very understanding and willing to work with you if needed.
I took her fully remote class for BY123 and we had to watch roughly 3-10 hours of lecture videos each week which were just her reading words off a powerpoint that were copied and pasted from the book in very inaccessible language for those not already super familiar with bio. Lectures go on tangents about very minute details that aren't on tests.
It was awful.... teaching style was terrible. Because of covid, she posted lecture videos on Canvas... and they were simply trash
Dr. Powell and Dr. Gray taught at the same time and were really hard to follow. Dr. Powell was nice but I found her lecturing to be a bit boring. The tests for her are hard and they make up a great sum of the grade, and you are expected to do all of the work in order to prepare. (6+ hours worth of videos, reading the book, and seeking outside info)
The grades are exam based. Her lectures do not give you a hint of whats going to be on the tests! She reads off of PowerPoints that barely summarized the book. She took questions from other professors to use on her tests! The weekly bonus quizzes will NOT help. The lab does not correspond with the lecture and is harder than the class itself.
I really wanted to give Dr. Powell 3 stars but there were too many times in her lectures where she would make very simple mistakes. Her lectures also very rarely provided any information not already written down in the PowerPoint or in the textbook. Honestly, she is not as bad as people make her out to be, and it is definitely possible to make an A
The lectures were on a high school level, but the tests were based on application and hypotheticals. The tests were difficult and most of the grade for the class is based on it. 30% is based on lab that has exams in itself which are ALL free-response. The lab is basically another lecture with no group work. Worst class set up ever. WEED OUT CLASS!!
Lectures are okay and tend to be long. Powerpoints come from the book and are great review materials for the tests. Powell does NOT deserve the bad rep she gets. She is always willing to help outside of class and will sometimes reteach concepts (trust me, seeking help from her is MUCH better than b*tching and complaining over GroupMe).

Feedback on homework is inconsistent with expectations. You can get 95% on all graded assignments then get an F on the test. Large amounts of content that is irrelevant. You have no way of knowing how well youre doing until you get your grade, with no explanation and no feedback except when the key was entered incorrectly. Take class elsewhere.
She did not cover any material in lecture, you had to watch her previous years lectures uploaded on canvas. NO extra credit, NO homework to bring up grade only exam points counted.
Dr Powell is the best professor you can have for Biology 1; You will definitely learn more than you will from anyone else, and you can get a good grade with a little effort; I definitely recommend taking Dr Powell for your biology 1;
Be prepared to teach yourself. Homework does not align with the tests. She will gladly meet with you outside of class, but I would not even bother because what she says does not help at all. I was religiously going to class and studying and barely passed while those in my lab with a different professor were doing very well. Nice but awful professor
I pretty much taught myself. A lot of the material has to be applied on the test but we are not taught how to do that in class. The only grades are really homework and test. I DO NOT RECOMMEND AT ALL!!!
People are being dramatic when they say shes awful. She gives both video lectures and a real lecture, but live lectures are better. Focus on the material in the slides and use lab to help solidify the info and youll be fine.
Powell does more in lecture than any other bio professor I have had because she does tend to teach. However, even after reading the textbook, her slides, viewing her online lectures, AND using notecards to practice, your grade is still a hit or miss. By far my least favorite class at UAB, but the lab portion is more consistent and manageable.
This class was awful. She reads everything straight from a powerpoint and does so too quickly, you do not even have time to take notes or retain information. This class is only graded by 4 exams and you have no way of knowing your grade until the very end when it's obviously too late. It is unnecessarily hard for an intro class. Take it elsewhere!
I had to withdraw from this course because it was so bad. I honestly studied nonstop and failed each exam I took. I will be taking this course at a different college and I HIGHLY recommend you do the same. YOU WILL NOT PASS unless you are lucky. Easynotecards WILL NOT SAVE YOU. The labs are also TERRIBLE. Take this class literally anywhere else!!!!
Dr. Powell is not a bad professor or awful. She is lecture heavy and goes through the slides fast because there is a lot of material. The textbook was more helpful to me than the lectures, but the tests are not bad if you study with quizlet and read the textbook.
Professor Powell is not an awful teacher. The textbook was more helpful than the lectures, but overall she teaches the material well. BLA and using the textbook are not suggestions, because the textbook goes into more detail than her lectures and is actually representative of the test.
Attend lecture, read the textbook, and use the active reading guides that go along with the textbook. If you put in the work and do decent in lab you will be fine in this class. She is also friendly and helpful in her office hours.
I liked Dr. Powell. She stayed on track with her syllabus unlike some of the other bio profs at UAB. Some people say that reading the book is better than attending her lectures. I used her lectures like a study session. She tests more heavily on the things she covers in class so be sure to go over her powerpoints when studying.
lectures the best out of all biology professors at UAB. exams are difficult and lengthy - only 4 exams. lab matters. sometimes has her cute dogs during office hours. overall, a good professor and teaches concepts well, it's just a horribly difficult class (weed-out).
The biology classes are very difficult if you don't put the work in. The material can be understood if you ask questions and go to BLA's or TA's. Use all resources honestly. I didn't read the book for real but it is very helpful to understand some of the more difficult concepts. Powell was great, she tried her best to make sense of the topics.
The only way to pass this class is by reading. The lectures are pretty much useless, as they jump from topic to topic super fast. If you have a choice, I would highly suggest taking this class elsewhere. It's too much stress for an introductory class.
Dr. Powell was not a bad teacher, but at the same time she went through lectures too fast and it was not helpful. The class itself should not be an intro class because it is way too hard and very hard to pass. Your grade is really just based on 4 exams, and your lab grade. Get ready to read a lot and basically teach yourself, didn't like this class
Dr. Powell is by far the worst professor I have ever had. About 60 percent of your grade is controlled by three tests, but do not expect those tests to be fair. She is notorious for rushing through and half explaining 2 whole chapters 2 days before the test and making those chapters half the test. She is an awful professor, take anyone else.
Honestly, work hard to get an A on all of your other classes because there is no way that you can get an A in this class unless you memorize information from easynotes. This is coming from a person who got a 4 on the AP Bio exam btw. Wouldn't have retaken it if I wasn't premed.
If you want to succeed in this class you have to dedicate at least 2 hours to read each chapter. There are around 28 chapters covered in this class. Lecture is just a light coverage on what the reading is on. If you go to Lecture you will have a better idea of what will be tested. Her lectures are decent, but they do not coveral all concepts.
The class is not impossible to do well in. It's very textbook and lecture-heavy, so you'll have to take very detailed notes. A lot of memorization for both lab and lecture which was frustrating. The lab is more difficult than the lecture. Her lecture style is okay, but it's much better in the videos she used to have.
Her lectures are useless. She just reads off the slides and give no additional commentary. Exams are all based on the textbook. Reading the textbook chapters multiple times is very essential. You could skip her lectures as they are pointless and just spend the time reading the textbook. The other bio professors will at least lecture better.
Dr. Powell was fine. She's a very intelligent professor, though her lectures were not very helpful when studying for exams. Most of what you need to know will come from having to read the actual textbook. Those who took AP biology in high school might have an easier time adjusting to the course than those who didn't.
Dr. Powell was great and very passionate about biology but if you don't like biology you will not enjoy this class.
This woman is the reason why people say "Cs get degrees." Easynotes is the only way one may even try to pass an exam. I promise you understand the material better than her but your test grades will say otherwise. Going to lecture is pointless besides for attendance, none of it will be on the test. The only good thing about her is her corgis.
Tests make up 60% of your grade and its more useful to just read the chapters. She lectures on basic points but doesn't delve deeper like what the tests ask for. It's good to go to lecture because she gives an attendance bonus and gave people who stayed extra points on one test. As long as you study from the book you should do well on tests.
I was able to get an A by creating flashcards based on the lecture PowerPoint. reading is helpful, but you only need to know what is in the PowerPoint for the tests. lectures got somewhat confusing at the end of the semester, however, she gave extra credit on tests which makes up for that.
Not great. She rambles on and her lectures are confusing. She tested us on concepts she said she wouldn't test us on. She blamed us for the bad grades. Each test question is set up like a trick question. I passed by reading the textbook and teaching myself the course. I hear she's better with smaller classes but don't take for large lecture class.
Refuses to accept she's wrong/an exam question is flawed and won't properly explain the reasoning behind why
Difficult content but Dr. Powell is very knowledgeable and willing to answer questions about the subject. Go to SI and really study the material, and it is possible to pass. Just listening to lectures however, is not enough to develop a deep enough understanding of the material that is required on the tests which make up 60% of your grade.
One of the worst professors I ever had. Her lectures are vague and don't do a deep dive into the content. She liked to test on the smallest points and not the large concepts. Her class is very disorganized and she's likes to post the homework for the week on Friday evening and have them due on Sunday. I would never take her again.
I wouldn't recommend taking this professor for this class. Runs through the PowerPoints without going into deep detail to help students understand. Exams are worth 60% of your grade and does not give bonuses. Homework and quizzes are not worth much to help improve your grade. Class is overall difficult.
90% of class is completely just the exams and lab Exams need to be self taught and studied for as Powell does not teach jack. Truly one of the worst teachers, wasting 3 hours per week in her lecture and the slides not going over anything you should know. The 30% lab portion was what gatekept me from an A. Alan Whitehead is the worst.
This professor would forget things she was teaching in lecture and didn't give bonus points except for perfect attendance. The overall course was very heavy and the lecture versus the tests didn't add up in my opinion.
She is very nice and goes through the slides pretty fast. I can tell she is passionate about biology and that shows through her lectures. Attendance is mandatory but you get bonus points at the end for perfect attendance. Literally just read the textbook chapters and you should be fine and take the practice tests in the book as well they help.
Homework was excessive. It was ridiculous. The exams were pretty easy and straight forward. You need to read the textbook to understand all of the material, but you can make an A studying off of her PowerPoints. You can get an A with like 4 hours of review before an exam. People made it out to be way harder than it was.
Lectures not as in depth as tests. No grade viewing until after final. Indicates a general lack of grading integrity/transparency. Creates a feeling of professor vs student. In-person interactions were dismissive. Made it frustrating as a student desiring to learn, because if I focused heavily on the lectures I could only hope for a C at best.
I was sick for one week in the semester and had to stay home, so I couldn't attend class. I made this clear to her and when I came back the next week, she made me take the unit exam which dropped my grade to a C. Exams were always a 50/50 chance between answers and office hours did not help.
Her class is pretty test heavy but it is easy if you just do the textbook. People fail her class because they dont focus and make it hard for themselves. The lecture is pretty fast though so you do need to keep up.
Dr. Powell is really passionate about Biology. The class grade is based on exams so you really need to study for those exams. I didn't really focus on the lecture, instead I did the reading guide and practice problems, which helped me a lot. Don't listen to people who says the class is hard, because if you do your work, it is easier than a AP Bio.
Took Genetics with her in Spring 2025 and it was awful. She's sarcastic in a way that isn't helpful, and her exams are ridiculously hard and Pearson-based. She won't round grades, even a 79.47%. iClicker is required for just 1 point, and you'll need it. Exams have gotten better since I took it since someone discovered the test bank.
tests are worth 60% with no clear study criteria. claims that if u use all her material u will pass, but that would require a 27 hour day with no room to even blink. i spent more hours studying for this course than all of my 12 other credit hours combined.
I would not recommend taking this class unless you NEED it for your major or you absolutely love biology. This was the hardest class I've taken in my life. The slides gone over in class were unhelpful to the exams. You have a better chance passing by studying her Easy note flashcards online. Her test questions are pulled from these cards online.
Tests are worth 60% of your grade, her lectures and powerpoints mean nothing. ALL of her exams are scenario based, barely making an effort to really explain things. Test directions are always, "pick the MOST correct answer." Seriously unnecessarily difficult. Would never take her again... I'm lucky to have even passed with a C-.
Disorganized lectures, unclear expectations, and inconsistent grading made this class unnecessarily stressful. Concepts were often rushed and questions didn't feel welcome. You end up teaching yourself most of the material. Would not recommend.
The exams are hard and are worth almost your entire grade. She gives 0 bonus points except for 2 points for having perfect attendance. She flies through the presentation, and the homework is long. You can tell she likes what she teaches, but thinks that everyone else has her knowledge and that things are easier than they actually are.
