cocky, above all, unclear expectations, worst teacher ever
I started out not liking experimental psychology and have come to love it. I believe Dr. Vanhoy is an extremely smart and very caring professor who wants her students to succeed. Take her class if your nervous about experimental because she is fair with her grading.
She's a very interesting individual. We mainly listen to guest speakers in this class, so I haven't really seen her teaching style. I think she does care about her students though.
When doing experimental research, Dr. Vanhoy is in her element. She is extremely smart and will do whatever it takes in time/help to get up down the road with your experiments. UCO should be happy to have an experienced quality professor like Dr. Vanhoy.
easy class!!!!
She's easy to follow, and speaks clearly. Pretty laid back, test are easy, and tells you exactly what she expects.
I didn't think this class would be as interesting as it was. She is a great teacher who makes all her students comfortable, and keeps the class fun. She tells hilarious stories, and encourages everyone to be themselves. You can't graduate without taking at least one of her classes.
Just not very helpful and does nothing in class except show illusions on the internet.
The WORST professor at UCO. Not helpful, only sarcastic to the point of being rude, and she makes you feel stupid. IF she does help, it's by giving the easy way out, which does not aid in this class. No lecture, except for her reading PowerPoint AND the tests suck! BTW, only the top 3 scores AT THE END OF THE SEMESTER determines your final grade.
She is a great teacher and she's really funny. She goes strait off powerpoint so it's a note-taking class. I personally do better when I have stuff in front of me. For tests, you defintately have to study. But she has a couple of extremely helpful web sites that get you prepared for them all. Definately not an easy A but if you try, you'll do fine!
Nice personallity but her teaching styles suck. test are super hard. I was a psych major but after taking her I have to change majors there is no review for test and all she did was waste the class period on websites that just confused you. avoid if possible.
Nice professor, good sense of humor. Very helpful and approachable. Seems very interested in student success. Tests are hard, definately need to study for them.
Don't take her, unless you want to feel stupid.
She is one of the best professors at UCO.
This proofessor has a great personality, but i personally do not like her teaching style... she dont make things easy to understand.
nice professor. Works well with students.
Out of the 42 students in the beginning of the year 27 had F's. Enough said. But it gets a whole lot better if you stick with it b/c she starts grading on a curve towards the end. I was one of the F's now i have a A... Enough said.
I originally started out doing pretty bad on her tests, but she gives a whole lot of extra cred. so now I'm doing really well in the class. I enjoy her lectures, but her tests can be very challeging.
Very nice professor. Wonderful personality and very willing to work with you to help increase your understanding and your grade. Definately worth taking.
She is very sarcastic and rude. Doesn't help unless you kiss ass. Take only if you know every aspect of the subject because you aren't going to get much help.
she is horrible! i was really interested in taking the class too! but she is the worst teacher ever! her tests are extremely hard and she is not very nice or helpful! stay away!
Please she freaking rocks.... like she goes over the entire test, and as long as you remember what she says or write down the questions during the card game, then for the test you are straight.. and she gives extra credit.. you should so not leave her class with anything less then a b.
I was nervous at first with the cards and being put on the spot, but after awhile you learn it helps with the tests! Overall it's been a pretty fun class and you learn some interesting things. She's very sarcastic but its fun if ya play along, too!
Dr. Vanhoy makes this class very interesting and is helpful. All you have to do is ask. Would recommend her for other classes.
She totally Rocks! I would recommend Dr. Vanhoy to anyone who wants to learn and not have their hand held. She WILL help you when you need it; however, she will NOT coddle you like a little high school student. She expects you to be interested in learning and come to class prepared. Downside of the class: Team Questions
Vanhoy is halarious and knowledgable. It was an intercession course so maybe she was more layed back than normal but her class was informative and fun. I made an A and will definately take her classes in the future.
Dr. Vanhoy is brilliant! She knows her stuff well, and she knows how to make a class interesting. However, I found that her lectures did not help me for the test. I, and most of the others in the class, never found a good way to study for the tests. She grades on a curve so that helps.Class is interesting, but tests are hard.Must work for grade.
This is disastrous teacher! If we can call her a teacher at all. I think she was accepted to this academic staff by an accident. Waist of time....
She guards the gates of hell with a nice warm smile! she is realy nice but her classes are hell. her experimental psych class is very difficult.
People that are used to getting good grades just because they are smart will probably not enjoy her classes. People who actually do the work like grown-ups will succeed. People who came to university to learn and who have some kind of inner life will probably really like that fact that she treats us like adults in charge of our own education.
Dr. Vanhoy. a love hate relationship here as she is brilliant and interesting, but tests are only for the brilliant and interesting...very difficult tests. She encourages trying! so try hard and be okay, dont try...and she expels you to burn in hell alone. preditor posing as prey!
Professor is very knowledgeable. She is a great teacher, you really learn a ton from her class. The class is just hard, there is no way around that. Her tests are very hard. But, attend class, do good on the labs, read textbook, and you will do fine. She shows alot of videos and youtube clips which are very cool.
Dr. Vanhoy is a very strict professor and her classes are not very interesting because she does not teach she 'professes'. She pretty much leaves you to your own and her grading system is just weird
Dr.Vanhoy is funny and brilliant. She righfully expects alot; this is college. Sensations is a very hard class and there is really no good way to study for the tests which are exteremly hard and there is no review. Only take her if you are willing to put in the effort.
Best pysch teacher @ UCO. She is hilarious & has a great personality. Her tests aren't easy but she gives HUGE curves. I did terrible on all but one test & came out with an A. I actually looked forward to coming to class & would recommend her to anyone. Also would recommend taking SPA & Exp at the same time. Seems crazy, but it's so helpful!!
TESTS ARE EXTREMLY HARD. sHE NEEDS TO GET BETTER TEACHING METHODS OR RETIRE.
Due to the passing of Dr. Fred, she took over. Very witty & tests are easy; curves on avg of 3 highest grades. SPSS sucks but you just have to stick it out. Grade depends more on the TA, Kristin who is a bit harsh on grading, but Vanhoy herself is great. Hoping she doesn't rely as heavily on a TA in the other classes I have to take with her.
Vanhoy is the best! Only people who are not willing work for their education wouldn't like her. Not only is she funny to listen to, but if you are having an issue she just wants to know that you are trying and is willing to help you. I was terrified of this lean mean student eating machine before, but now she is one of my favorites!
Dr. Vanhoy is an amazing professor. Being in her classes are frustrating and tests are hard but the knowlege gained from her at the end is well worth it. She is hilarious and helpful even though she can seem intimidating at times. She just wants effort and in return you come out a far better student.
Ive had her for 3 classes now(not by choice) & her classes are pretty easy, but she's not very helpful & hates talking out of class. Its almost impossible to get her one on one... nothing to really worry about, she's pretty funny which makes the class more interesting. Bad professor, easy A.
I've also had her for 3 classes now. The classes are easy A's but I have to disagree about not getting her to help. She basically did my homework for me while explaining it. You come out of the classes learning a lot actually. I recommend that you take SPA & Experimental at the same time. The material overlaps and it actually helps you learn.
I love Dr. Vanhoy, she can be intimidating, but if you go to class and are prepared for discussion you should do well. She is always happy to help DURING HER OFFICE HOURS.
This is a great Professor. Unfortuently people are lazy and she give lots of work for one to do and her test are very hard because she does not give a review. I love her she is great and lazy people should not take her class because she wont put up with it.
Took Psych of Persuasion over intersession-- we covered the entire textbook in a week- and I read the entire thing from cover to cover. This was a must as all tests and quizzes were essay format. It was managable though. Only qualm was that all grading was done by a TA and was very subjective and at times inconsistant.
Dr. Vanhoy is a very different professor. She does not take crap from anyone and her tests are hard but she always gives a curve. I have had her for 7 classes and am about to graduate. She is my favorite professor even though i have had to work hard in her classes.
I've taken 3 classes from Dr. V so far (experimental, SPA, eyewitness memory), and she is one of my favorite profs! Her classes are not easy, but you WILL know how to write a lab report with your eyes closed by the end of the semester. Don't stress too much about exam grades. The lab report grades seem to be more important.
I had heard so many horror stories about Dr. Vanhoy. I took Spa and experimental with her. The classes were definetely hard but you really do learn a lot in her classes. And you will know how to write a lab report! I failed every test and still made and A in my experimental class because of my lab report grades. She is an awesome professor!
Dr. VanHoy is a great professor!
She is a very smart lady I will give her that but she does not teach you might as well do the course online and when she does teach it is very broad. If the ta's do not like you you're basically like burnt toast.
I witnessed her mocking a student that had received two zeros on term papers in her ?writing in psychology? class, from what I can tell he just had a hard time understanding what she was expecting. She seemed pretty happy he failed and from what I witnessed was very unprofessional and disrespectful and I have lost all respect for her.
Vanhoy is the worst teacher I have ever had. She cares more about humiliating and being rude to the student, than actually teaching them. Her TA's are just as bad, with their false sense of power that Vanhoy allows them to have. Do not take this teacher if at all possible! She is absolutely terrible!!!
Dr. V is great! Don't bother taking her if you don't want to learn. I'm in my 4th class w/her and will take her every chance I can. No other prof has better prepared me for grad school. Come to class on time and stay ahead of your reading and you'll do fine. The grades are on a curve so don't let the test scores scare you!
I had her for SPA and Experimental and after spending a whole week getting help from her TA on a lab report, she still gave me a failing grade. I don't think there is any way to please her. She does feel sorry for you often times and will cut you slack. but for the most part, try to avoid her as much as you can. Her class was stressful!
Dr. Vanhoy is brilliant & expects you to work. If you don't do well it's because you didn't give it 100%. It is college. She strikes me as the type that doesn't want underachievers in her field. Focus on your notebooks and lab reports. They end up being more important than tests. You'll be writing lab reports in your sleep when you're through!
If all the psychology Master's classes were like this one, we'd have our (imaginary) Ph. D's. I'd sweat when I came to class, maybe even shook. But now that is over, i feel myself missing it. Even if I end up with a B. I know I earned the heck out of it. Its time to weed out all the non-hackers...and i'm still here.
Extremely knowledgeable professor. However do not expect to be babied or have your held hand through this course. Make sure to do study questions, take notes, read the book, and excel in the lab reports and lab notebooks! I did not do well on her tests but did well on the labs and managed to get a B. Good luck!!
Great teacher. hilarious. Definitely treats you like an adult, will not baby you. PREPARE BEFORE CLASS. Read the assignments before you get to class. Keep up with everything. she can be a stickler about grammar and a few other things, but otherwise she's pretty laid back. Regardless of what people say on here, I thought she was pretty reasonable.
Experimental was less structured than SPA. She followed the syllabus but expects more out of you. Ask for help if needed and work together with classmates! Stay persistent in keeping up with readings. Try to excel in labs by researching and referring to various articles. An A is attainable! Good luck!
I learned a ton from Dr. Vanhoy! This course is challenging and she expects you to be prepared and work hard, but she is very knowledgeable and I enjoyed her lectures. A lot is left up to the TA, so be mindful of that and have respect for them.
Doesn't respond to emails. Doesn't provide clear or detailed comments on homework assignments to the point marks on papers are like trying to decipher egyptian hieroglyphics. Beneath the outwardly "toughness" a psychology expert and encourager of true education over regurgitation. Survive. Don't get upset that it's tough. Life is tough.
Dr. Vanhoy is awesome! She's intelligent and helpful if you approach her after trying to do things yourself. She won't baby you and she weeds out those that can't cut it. If you get on her good side you couldn't ask for a better advocate to help you through grad school landmines. Don't be scared, prepare, and be nice to your TAs! You'll be fine!
I love Dr Vanhoy, and will take her every opportunity I get. If you do all that is asked of you, you will do fine. The tests are hard, but the grade goes off of the top 3 mean. She also offers other work to improve your grade.
I've taken Dr. Vanhoy for several classes. She is a very intelligent professor and does a great job of teaching the material in a way that means something to you. She's not an easy professor but if you put in the work you will get the grade you deserve. An A is not impossible.
I dont understand why everyone is afraid of Dr. Vanhoy. She is one of the best professors out there and she teachs in a way that everyone has the chance to get it and relate to the subjects.I made a 97.5 in the class and loved every minute of it! Go to class, take notes, and make her laugh. She loves the smart students that try. Everyone else... no
Brilliant professor. She knows her stuff, and she's there to really educate, not just pass students through the program. She'd rather see slackers fail. If you study and work hard, her classes are straightforward to pass, and you'll learn a lot. I really like her, and I think she's hilarious. Has a scary reputation, but I've enjoyed her classes.
Vague instruction and a smug sense of humor. Comes across as pretentious. Provides little direction on assignments and admits to preferring that lab over teaching in the classroom (should have stayed in one) . Easily forgets the difference in a 1000 level course and a 4000. Do not take as a freshman, you will fail.
This is absolutely the worst teacher I've ever had. She doesn't care about her job, loves making students feel stupid for having questions or answering a question wrong, and has no interest whatsoever in seeing her students succeed. The only adivice I have is to do well on the lab reports because she doesn't teach ANYTHING that is on the exams.
I dont like kissing a teachers a$% and thats what all of those who said vanhoy is a "great teacher if you get on her good side" are implying.her jokes are rather dry and i refuse to laugh to appease her. granted, she in not there to be a comedian but to teach and she does not do that well either. she is educated but in a dry human text book way.
Rude teacher who didnt care for her students. When asked questions about your grade, she would reduce your grade by 5%. Uses her own notes, instead of textbook.Exams questions were very difficult and had nothing to do with subject taught in class. Definitely someone to avoid! I dont know why UCO still has her around as a instructor.
May the odds be ever in your favor!!!
Dr. Vanhoy is probably the best professor I've had in college. I've had her for 5 classes and she always manages to teach me something new. Yes she's hard, and if people have a problem with that they shouldn't be in upper level college classes. She makes class interesting. She is very approachable once you get the nerve to actually approach her
Dr. Vanhoy can be intimidating. Her classes are hard but what do you expect at 3/4000 level classes! She just has a lot of rules. As long as you follow them and do the assignments and show up to class you will pass! Also talk to the TA's about HW's & papers! and see the APA tutor! The papers are VERY important.
WORST teacher I've ever had. Intimidating, sarcastic, not helpful in the least. The people saying she is truly trying to educate, I DISAGREE. She does not answer questions you have, and expects you to figure it out on your own. Not my idea of a teacher. Loves answering students' questions with another question.. Confusing!
You won't pass any of the exams but she curves the top 3 so you pass. Granted this class is VERY difficult but if you take what the TA's say on the lap reports and improve you can pass the class with an "A". Don't bother asking her questions, she'll just tell you to go look it up and make you feel dumb for asking.
Not a single person scored above a 20% on our last assignment... She's ruthless.
I fell in love with Dr. Vanhoy. She is the most intelligent woman I've ever had as a professor. She is an expert on the field that has to do with psychological processes and she is truly passionate to teach. She serves as a good transduction model of knowledge. However, its up to the student to put all the work. Expect a high level of anxiety.
Dr Vanhoy may not be my idea of what a "teacher" should do, but she is brilliant and listening to her speak was insightful. Be ready for the most challenging and confusing class you have ever taken!
Very smart professor, but hard.
Dr. Vanhoy will challenge you and make you a better student, a better person, and a wiser adult. You just have to survive...
She is hard. She is smart. Just do better than everyone else and you get your A that's what I did in Advanced stats this last semester
Her experimental class was challenging. You had to know your stats, and you had o always be prepared to answer her questions. The only way to get any feedback from her is to visit her, and it is a MUST that you show her that you have done everything you can to do well before seeing her. She loves people that are serious about the class. No coddling
She's tough, but you learn a lot. Tests will have a surprise but know the concepts. Make sure you are in class prepared (study questions answered in hand). 5 tests, and 5 lab reports. Make sure to have several people edit your report, you have more than 5 APA errors and you'll get a 5 out of 20. They is a curve, averaged from the top three means.
Dr. V is my favorite. She doesn't give you a grade, you EARN it. She may seem intimidating, but when it comes down to it, if you ask her a question she'll answer. The answer may be "It's on the syllabus" so make sure you do your own searching before speaking to her. She has high expectations of her students and helps those who help themselves.
Dr. Vanhoy changed my entire focus in school. I went from aimlessly bull rushing my way through school to making an honest effort at learning an entirely new area in psychology. I am now looking into PHD programs, something I would have never even thought of before. If you are looking for an easy A read the syllabus and talk to your TAs.
Dr. Vanhoy is amazing. She changed my view on life.
Dr. Vanhoy is amazing. She changed my view on life. Love her!
Don't bother asking her questions, you'll look like a fool and be embarrassed in front of the whole class. Don't complain about her to the Psy. department or Dean. They will tell her your name and what you said, she will take it out on the class. Those who say they love her kissed her ass. Don't bother giving her a hospital note, she doesnt care
This professor is amazing! She the professor who will either make or break you. Although students may complain about her being tough, they usually were the student who were lazy and easily gave up. Initially, I had a hard time with this class, but then buckled down and worked hard. Don't be afraid to approach her, but have a humble and open mind.
Oh, SPA. Honestly, I was extremely excited about this class. I was disappointed by the lack of consistency in the grading system. I don't mind working hard for my grade, but a little positive feedbackencouragement in class would go a long way.
You have to read a lot, but if you do then the tests are a breeze. If you show up to class and take notes, you will do fine. I took this class over the summer, but she makes you want to be there everyday. She gave quite a bit of homework, but that may be because we had eight weeks to learn the material.
Psych of Persuasion Definitely a Senior-level class & she reiterates that! You WILL (and should) work for your grade. She's funny, she wants you to do well, and you'll learn a great deal if you put forth the effort. Expect to work hard, to do your part of any group work, and study. You know, do what you should be doing anyway. It's a great class!
Dr. Vanhoy is an old school type of teacher. If you don't do any homework or participate in class, she does not care about you. She believes that students need to want to learn. She's not going to give you clear cut instructions sometimes but still expects the work. Good thing is that she curves grades. Just been the smarter one in class.
Trust me when I say, you may complain about her the entire time you have her, but she will be the one you areTHANKING when you make it to grad school or a doc program. Easy A professors won't get you there. She is hard for a reason. I have only felt better prepared after taking her classes. Go to office hours. be engaged. DO NOT give up.
Vanhoy spends most of the class surfing the internet for little things to show you that do not benefit you for the tests. The lab reports are confusing and pointless in my opinion. If you get more than 5 APA errors, you get a 5 out of 20. She will embarrass you in front of the class. I will try to avoid her classes. I did not retain any useful info
This was a terrible class. It was intersession, so we were there nearly 9.5 hours every day. She was in the room MAYBE 30 minutes every day. The textbook was a joke, but be sure that you know it well; it's what tests consist of. The other portion of the tests are fill in the blank from movies. Ridiculous class, terrible teaching, but an easy A.
This class is hard. Dr. Vanhoy tells you at the beginning of the semester that she will not spoon feed you. Only ask questions once you've used all your resources. Don't even think about asking a question that can be found in the syllabus. I would not have gotten into grad school without her. She's the best professor I've ever had.
Go into class with your mind made up that she will not intimidate you. She will probably still upset you at some point, but it will make it easier. Appreciate your $20 textbook. Engage her in class (she actually likes when you ask questions). Go to office hours. If you stand out and she likes you.. well you just made your life way easier my friend.
Go to class and do the work. Only advice I can give. She wants to know that you care about your grade. You may fail all the tests but at the end it'll average out. Don't give up! You get to learn a lot of cool things in this class. Dr. Vanhoy is very intelligent. Don't expect things to be handed to you. Study! She is also very sarcastic and funny.
Vanhoy is not as bad as the rumors that go around about her class. Just go to class. Do the assignments the best you can and go over the tests. Remember the previous test questions they are reused many times. You'll do fine. I did terrible on most the test and still made a decent grade.
I *was* a straight A, 4.0 student before this professor came into my life. No matter how hard you study and try to prepare, it will never be enough. If you value your sense of self-worth, happiness, and motivation, avoid this professor at all costs. She actually made me consider dropping out entirely.
There is no way to avoid taking Vanhoy, so I just try my hardest on the papers and hope for the best. Everyone in the class fails the exams, the lectures are taught from google, and Vanhoy is extremely intimidating. The grading for the class has a high curve and makes it to where you will get a decent grade by the end of the semester though.
She's awful, you won't like her and won't be able to avoid her. You will fail everything and somehow pass the class. She has to curve or no one would pass. She will probably tell the class daily you will never be successful. Teaches from Google. Assignments very hard!!! There aren't enough words or space in this box to prepare you for her.
Hard exterior, but deeply caring. Very helpful if you ask. Bring your A game.
SPA is a tough course and Dr. Vanhoy is aware of that and heavily curves grades at the end of the semester. The tests are challenging but hang in there & you'll be fine! Dr. Vanhoy is a funny & fair professor.
After having her for both SPA and experimental as a grad student, I can say undoubtedly that this is the worst professor ever. I haven't learned anything from her. She doesn't teach, even through "teaching yourself" you don't learn a thing. Without curve everyone would fail, very cruel, unrealistic expectations, makes everyone feel incompetent...
There is not enough characters here to explain Vanhoy. In graduate school I saw at least 10 of my classmates cry because of her, never gives straight answers, doesn't give feedback at all, kicks you out of her office. We pay WAY too much money to have a professor that doesn't teach the material. We are here to learn and it is so sad that we don't.
It is impossible to avoid Vanhoy, and my best advice is to try your hardest. The class is graded on a major curve. It is common to fail all the assignments, but you will still get a better grade than you expect. She teaches from Wikipedia and Google. No slides prepared. Her tests are hard, considering you have to teach yourself.
Dr. V is the type of professor that prepares you for grad school and/or the real world. She is not easy on you, but that is how it has to be sometimes for college. Don't act like a high schooler and she won't treat you like one. Do your best, work hard, and complete all the assignments. If you do what is asked of you, you will do well.
Went into this class very scared based on what Ive read & heard. Yes, almost everyone fails every single exam, to the point where most people give up on studying. BUT if you do well on your reflections and labs which are easy, you will get a good grade! I was scared of failing since I failed 5 out of 6 exams, but I got an A!
Dr. Vanhoy is one of the best professor I ever had. She prepared me to be able to fail without feeling like a failure and to not put so much stock in the grades you get on papers. You have to try hard, but it is worth it because you gain more than just knowledge about the class, but also knowledge and skills for real life. Everyone should take her.
I had Dr. Vahoy for psych stats my freshman year. This class prepared me to be able to work hard, learn on my own, and not put as much stock in the grades you get back on individual assignments. I loved her class and would take it again in a heartbeat. I still have her stats notes 3 years later.
This is the worst teacher I have ever had. She constantly reminds the class that she is "not here to teach us." On top of being highly unreasonable in her expectations of her students, she is also incredibly disorganized and is never prepared for class. She gets off on belittling students who ask questions that everyone in the class is wondering.
DO NOT TAKE HER if you can... She teaches Sensation Perception and Action (SPA) so you will most likely have no choice in taking her. She is very RUDE, condescending, and she does not teach very well. Most of the class we look at pictures of animals. One week all we did is look at the weather channel for the ENTIRE class on both days.
I took Dr. Vanhoy for 4 different graduate courses. She is my favorite professor I have ever had. She has an incredible ability to inspire students to view things from new perspectives. My view of psychology, and science in general, has been completely shaped by the ideas she taught. I am now in a PhD program and I owe much of my success to her.
Dr. V teaches from google, YouTube, RadioLab, and looks up pictures via internet. Her class grades consist of test, labs, reflections. She knows its a hard class and curves at the end of the semester. Do good on labs, and reflections and youll do fine. As for the test, good luck passing those considering you teach yourself.
Do not take her, she is horrible. Your on your own for assignments. She will say im not here to teach. Just sends you to youtube videos that look nothing like your book assignments. No PowerPoints or outlines to fallow along, so your completely lost at all times. You fail every exam.
Do not take her. She is one of the worst professors Ive ever had. Shes not clear about when things are due. She teaches out of YouTube videos and Google. Shes rude when you ask questions and doesnt answer any emails. Do yourself a favor and dont take her.
Dr. Vanhoy is my absolute favorite professor. Shes part of the reason why Im returning to UCO for a second degree. When I was struggling in my personal life, she made time for me and gave me a hug at graduation while others were getting handshakes. She fostered my work ethic and confidence in myself and Ill always be thankful for that.
Dr. Vanhoy is easily the worst professor I have ever had. She talks down to people asking questions, she doesnt teach, youre basically on your own. SPA is widely considered to be one of the harder classes in psychology and if you can avoid taking her I would highly recommend it.
Dr. Vanhoy regularly doesn't teach the class. She always asks random questions for no reason just to burn time. There is no structure so everyone winds up being confused. Her assignments seem designed to make you fail because of how much she changes them on the fly. Everyone winds up with an A from the curve but you will always be stressed.
This teacher was absolutely HORRIBLE. Throughout the whole entire semester she would NEVER post the grades so all the students were left in the dark wondering if they were even passing the class. She makes up assignments on the spot, and doesnt even teach the material. I basically had to teach myself. Waste of my MONEY. DO NOT TAKE HER.
Worst professor I have ever had. So disorganized. Waited until dead week & finals week to assign & make our last 7 assignments/quizzes due. Uses google &YouTube to teach. Will not answer your questions so dont even ask. Dont try emailing her she wont respond. No clear due dates/assignment instructions. Never grades. Avoid at all cost!!
Dr. Vanhoy has a pleasant personality. She talks really fast, mostly with her eyes closed. Dont bother reaching out for help/questions, and dont expect to understand her. She could be funny but she could be really snarky. I wouldnt go out of my way to take her but I wouldnt completely avoid her either. Idk, just an eh! experience.
Hardest class I've had so far. Vanhoy is a tough professor, but you CAN survive this class. Your best grade replaces your lowest grade in each category. Pay attention to everything she says in class even if it doesn't make sense, she will leave little hints about what to expect on the test but it's easy to miss. You'll be ok.
This professor was degrading. She teaches not I think to educate but to flex on other students. She does not teach well, very disorganized and confusing. She got in a few of my classmates faces because we were not answering questions due to being confused. You will be teaching yourself if you take this course with this professor.
A "challenging" professor who enjoys teaching, her students, and will work with you if you communicate and do your part. Although she is intimidating at first, her teaching style is just unique. Students expect a cake walk and are disappointed when Vanhoy does not yield. This is college. Work hard, study, and grades will not disappoint.
Professor Vanhoy was late to every class and never apologized. She was condescending when we asked questions, and even worse when calling on us to answer hers. Nobody in my class passed her tests, but she just gave a speech about 'grades not mattering'. Her grading isn't clear because people with the same scores got different grades.
I learned an enormous amount from Dr. Vanhoy. She is really, really knowledgeable. On top of that, she strikes a great balance between being understanding of your circumstances while still commanding respect. I've never had a teacher like her before, but I loved it, because I grew more in her class than in 99% of the classes I've taken.
Awful communication. Extremely disorganized set up of the class and how it functions. Coursework itself is not difficult, but the way she has things set up makes it near impossible to stay on top of things. She requires a very heavy workload, and does not have grace for those who experience life outside of school. Seriously would not recommend.
I can not say enough good things about Vanhoy. I loved coming to her lecture, had an intersession class & was blown away at how well she presented class each day with encouragement. You learn a LOT!!! I feel like I grew as a person after taking her persuasion class & would 100% recommend taking the course! You earn your grade, it's that simple :)
Write down EVERYTHING on the board or spoken, it will help you feel less lost when doing the homework. The topics and how she goes about them in the beginning make more sense as the semester goes on. Refresh on basic statistics before you take it because she goes fast. If you keep up with the homework, it gets easier. Don't give up!
While Dr. Vanhoy is extremely knowledgeable in her field, she sometimes fails to translate that knowledge in an understandable way to her students. She does not answer questions directly, and my class and I were often left to figure problems out on our own. I would not recommend taking this class if you are not able to teach yourself.
I would avoid this professor at all costs unless you are good at stats. She made everything harder than it needed to be. Consistently late to class, doesn't have clear grading criteria, didn't like answering questions, sometimes rude. I got used to teaching myself and managed to do well, but it was not an enjoyable class for me.
please find a new professor for this content UCO. She consistently was late, did not give clear instructions, and then will shame and ridicule you for not meeting her unclear expectations. If you want to actually learn anything you have to teach yourself. won't ever truly assess your knowledge.
Do your future-self a huge favor and take as many classes as you can from Dr. Vanhoy. If you show up, do the work, and put in the effort, the return on your investment will multiply exponentially. You will thank yourself for many years to come.
Dr. Vanhoy is unique. She lacks in varying lecture styles and it is very tough to know what these generated tests? will ask for, but she puts in a clear effort to help in any way she can. As a student, you are responsible for communicating your needs and if you do that, you'll see the good in her and you will grow! Glad I didn't drop the class.
Vanhoy for persuasion was my favorite course to take at UCO. Such a great class taught by an even better professor.
I thought everyone was exaggerating when they said how rude she was. Not helpful whatsoever. Waves off questions and makes us ask for help from other students that have no idea what to do. She failed an entire class and showed up late to a final. UCO do better. Listen to the students and do something about this. Tired of the belittling.
I can't understand why UCO allows this professor to stay on - - apparently she is tenured, and I can't figure out why. I ended up dropping her class because it was clear that she was not interested in teaching. Condescending, rude, believe the reviews you see here.
Goes very fast throughout class, and does not explain very well.
I have never left a rating before, but she's so awful. I feel the need to warn others. If you value your time and peace, avoid this prof. There are assignments due that she never mentions, she discourages questions in class, and she seems to want you to fail. It's a hard enough class as it is, she makes it so much harder. I would recommend Rerick.
Pros: Well of knowledge Cons: I wanted to trust so bad that she specifically and intentionally designed her class to be unpredictable in a controlled way, as to get us more comfortable with the difficulties of grad school. I quickly learned that her not uploading class schedules... (continued in other rating)
..scribbling illegible feedback on papers, and forgetting to upload drop boxes to turn in assignments came from a place of just not caring. If I have a job and miss an assignment? Bad grade. That is fair. If the professor cannot manage their own classes and workload and tries to pin this on "teaching students how to be independent? Tenure.
Professor Vanhoy can be tough, but with some effort you can get through this class. I found unstuck ai really helpful for test prep - it saved me a lot of time compared to traditional methods.
Computational Modeling is basically coding. Cool person but doesn't really teach. She uses online sources and tells you to use AI a lot. If you ask ka question, be prepared to go find the answer yourself online. While I did not learn much from the class, it was the easiest A I had as she did not have any tests and no homework for this class.
Just don't take any of her classes. She will lecture the entire class period and you will be lucky to absorb any of what she says. Assignment instructions are hardly ever clear, which is made worse by the fact that she is a very tough grader. No easy points or easy assignments. Never had a professor that seems to want to help less than she does.
Very unclear about what she wants for assignments. She's always late to class and does not respond to emails. She has a great personality and is very funny, but I would not recommend taking her classes if you actually want to learn. When learning for Comp Modeling, she doesn't teach how to code and shows YouTube videos instead of lecturing.
I will NEVER take a class with this professor again. Unorganized, fast-paced, no room for questions, and unclear assignments. The only reason I passed was due to CLASSMATES forming a study group and YouTube. Now I have to avoid classes I want because they are only taught by her. I strongly discourage you from taking her for any and every class!
do not. please. do not.
I took her computational modeling class. Dr V showed up late very day, did not stick with her syllabus, was unclear and confusing, and did not teach the material other than using online sources/YouTube videos. This class is an easy A but couldn't imagine taking a harder course with her. I found her to be a kind woman, but not a great professor.
It was my first time taking an intercession class, but it was super interesting. I feel like I learned a lot in the span of 5 days. It definitely wasn't easy, but it wasn't impossible either. You definitely earn your grade, which means you need to read everything and participate to show you understand. I felt accomplished by the end of the class!
I have never written a review for a professor before, but this professor is all over the place. I would avoid taking her class at all costs, as things are made to be way more difficult than they need to be. She is also very condescending and rude, and doesn't seem to enjoy her job very much.
Very rude and unprofessional. Don't take her. Anyone else is better than her.
She wants the best for you, you must do your research. and for the love of god, turn something in. don't just NOT turn something. that is how you fail.
She is tough but tries to make it fun. When my grade started slipping and I stopped coming to class (advanced stats is hard) she emailed me and asked if I was okay, and if there was anything she could do. She does really care, just doesn't always come off like it. Go to class and study with classmates and you'll do okay!
Impossible tests. Gave unclear feedback on assignments. Heavy grader, very specific. Come to class and you MIGHT pass. Work with your classmates too. Would not recommend this professor. Take someone else if at all possible.
Do yourself a favor and trust the other reviews. Take another professor. Dr. Vanhoy doesn't seem to enjoy teaching much. It's almost as if she doesn't want to help students succeed. The only reason I got an A was because I was consistent enough to keep up with the unreasonable amount of work assigned with very unclear instructions.
Multiple times throughout the semester, my classmates and I were floored by her. She is rude and condescending. She is one of those teachers that want to create an environment where you feel you will fail, idk if its ego or what. We pay money, a lot of money, to learn. Not to jump through hoops and walk on eggshells.
Professor Vanhoy seemed nice at first, but taking an intercession class with her was rough. She assigned 6+ dense readings the first 2 days, she frequently left class (30+ mins each time), she also seemed annoyed when people asked questions. Please take these reviews as a red flag, i didnt and ended up withdrawing from the course..
y'all be lyin
I've had her twice & still maintained my 4.0. You will succeed if you show up, turn in every assignment and participate in class. Reading her syllabus is like accessing cheat codes- read it before you ask questions. She's particular, but not unreasonable. Don't take it personally if she sounds a little harsh- she def cares & wants you to do well.
Her teaching style is awful. It's impossible to get anything of substance out of her lectures. She didn't grade anything until the night before the final. And she admitted to using AI to grade our work. She curves but if she taught properly she wouldn't have to. Feedback is vital to the main project and without that all semester you can't do well.
