Don't take this class if you're looking for an easy A. Gives you long reading assignments before every class and you have four long papers to write. Participation is 25% so you have to do the reading and discuss in class. She's a tough grader but if you ask for help, shell stay after class for hours talking to you.
Awesome professor! I was overwhelmed at first because the reading assignments are incredibly dense- not flimsy text book paragraphs. You will learn so much if you participate in the discussions, do all the readings, and talk to her if you are lost. She cares so much about her students. PARTICIPATE and you will do so well!
She is very passionate about WGS. And may come off as very opinionated to others, but she is just trying to show people another perspective. I loved her class and learned a ton. She is genuinely concerned about all of her students and always willing to help! Don't skip on the readings because you have to discuss in class, its interesting anyways!
She's a great professor. You can tell that she really cares about her students - gives really good feedback, holds paper sessions to discuss what you need help with, gives extra credit, and she was more than willing to give extensions if asked. The readings were really dense but it helps so much for your papers if you read
+She cares about you. Tell her if you are uncomfortable with the class material or if you have a problem. She wants you to succeed. She'll also want to keep in touch with you through FB. +Don't hesitate to go to her office hours. I've had great conversations with her. +She gives two or three pages of feedback for each paper which is useful!
Minnie really cares. She writes 2-3 pages of comments with each essay and takes hours of unpaid time to help with papers. Papers aren't easy but it's worth the effort. This class w/ Prof Chiu will make you a better reader and writer. Sorta heavy reading but it's all interesting and class discussions are great. They're hilarious and insightful.
Minnie is awesome. I would recommend her class to anyone. The class is not a hard class to pass if you read and keep up with the topics that are being discussed. The papers can be a bit challenging but she has writing sessions in which she helps you with your paper and she is hilarious.
Took Minnie at Pace - she's not super educated on this topic nor is she good at starting intellectual discussions. Basically we just sat around and talked every class. IF you want an easy class, take this class, but if you want a strong foundation in WGS, avoid Minnie. If you're majoring or minoring in WGS do not take her!
I took her at Pace. Worst professor I've ever taken. I am a senior. A 101 class shouldn't be this hard. Avoid her!!!!!!!! WS is not this diffcult.
Goes off topic and rants to the point that she is practically throwing a hissy fit especially when she is talking about a viewpoint that she finds ridiculous. Many people in the class found her funny but I felt like she was making fun and putting down other perspectives. I was disappointed to see this in an intro WGS class. Gives the wrong idea.
BEST TEACHER EVER SHES MAD NICE AND CARES A LOT TAKE HER IF YOU LIKE WGS
AMAZING !!!!! she is honestly the best teacher i have ever had! Honestly anyone would be lucky to have her. To whoever made those comments they obviously received a bad grade in their essays! She is so sweet and she gives GREAT feedback on papers! I totally recommend her !
My favorite professor at Hunter so far! She helps with your essays so much and makes the class interesting. I look forward to it each day. Definitely take this class with this professor.
Gives amazing comments on papers and she really puts effort into making you a better writer. Would take again!
She is super helpful in writing your papers. Yes you do a lot of readings however, they are interesting and we discuss it in class. She is listen to anything you have to say or if you even need someone to talk to ! You won't regret it !
Professor Chiu was nothing short of admirably intelligent and indubitably awakening. Considers every view point! Challenges students in ways which will help them become better at synthesizing and interpreting material. Sweet, credible, and gives truly exceptional lectures. Topics are interesting & thought provoking, TAKE HER!!!!!
Amazing professor, gives a ton of feedback on papers so you can do better each time. She even takes the time to set up writing workshops with her students to work on their papers. Its a very open class, no judgement.
She's a very interesting and fun professor. She gives good feedback on papers and she makes the class interesting. Participation is necessary.
Amazing amazing AMAAAAAZING
Chiu was one of the best professors I've ever had at Pace. She really cares about her students and wants them to succeed. Take her class, you won't regret it!!!
Chui is amazing! She is so caring and makes it a priority to make her class super stress free while still making sure you are still learning. She assigned a paper during midterms season and once she saw how stressed I was gave me extra time to do the paper so that I can focus on my harder classes. She is the best professor I have ever had at Pace!!
One of the best professors I've ever had at Hunter. She is hilarious and makes class super fun. There are a lot of readings, but they are really interesting, so I didn't mind. She really cares about her students and gives tons of extra credit assignments. She's really an amazing professor and person overall, anyone would be lucky to take her class.
I took Minnie's Intro to Women's Studies class at Pace but for some reason, I couldn't find her page for Pace. Minnie is wonderful. She really cares about her students and is so helpful. I learned so much and she's easily one of my favorite professors I've had. If you can take her class do it. I wish she taught more classes at Pace!
I took the course as a core requisite in Hunter; Minnie was an amazing professor. She genuinely cares about her students and wants them to do well. Her teaching method was very unique; she showed many videos to provoke critical thinking. I don't regret taking the course ,because I felt like she led me to a more different and provocative mentality.
Minnie is one of the kindest professors I have ever had at Hunter, she genuinely cares about her students! The class does require a very large amount of reading: expect 45-60 pages of articles/ week on average. The grade is based on 3-4 papers and a group project but she has very helpful paper sessions. Highly recommended you take this class!!
MINNIE IS AWESOME!!! SO smart and invested in her students and really takes the time to make sure you understand the topics. Loses track of time easily but you still learn a lot in her class. LOTS of reading but you dont need to finish it all. Easily the best prof I've ever had and am majoring in WGS bc of her! Class is pretty easy
I took her course at Pace, but Professor Chiu is awesome! You MUST read and be prepared to participate. There is quite a bit of reading each week, but her lectures are interesting and funny! We had 3-4 papers and numerous opportunities for extra credit. She is very willing to help you, but you have to ask for it. She KNOWS what she's talking about!
The class consisted of mediocre class "discussions" (we were mostly spoken AT), lengthy feedback that offered nothing but 2-3 pages worth of the professor's personal interpretations of the essay prompts - if you can call them that. She did not break ice with her rant-lectures. Several times she urged the class to get A's but did little else to help
This class was mediocre at best. It is a 100 level class with too much reading AND writing. I didn't have this much writing to do even for my writing intensive 300 literature course. Doesn't really teach, tells you about her experiences, as if they were shared by everyone. Not worth it.
Tries to cram too much material for a 100 level class. She wants you to participate except that if you do she challenges you publicly unless you share her opinion. You're not being encouraged to critically think, you're being shoved mostly one sided arguments (opinions, really) down your throat.
I was actually very excited to take this class since I previously took her intro class and I really liked her. Reality was that this semester she was was very disorganized and was EXTREMELY unclear, unprofessional, and disrespectful towards students. I expected much more from the professor and this class. -Signed, An extremely disappointed student
VERY disorganized. She really needs to figure out how to plan a course better because the syllabus was completely different by the end of the semester. She also spends most of the class just telling everyone about her experiences, some of which have nothing to even do with the writing she's assigned.
Assigned a lot of reading for an intro level course. Despite this, if you are engaged in class and pay attention during discussions, you can retain enough material to write papers (I got mainly -A on them and I rarely did reading) Pushes deadlines back frequently. Caring professor. Interesting course material.
Honestly, she opened my eyes to many nuances concerning women gender studies. Shes a great teacher, cares about the stuff that happens in the world and tries connecting with her students with information never seen before. Id recommend her to not only female students but male students.
It has been a pleasure taking this class. The material really gets your mind working and thinking about things in a new way. She is an amazing lecturer, though the material is heavy stuff she always finds a way to make you smile. She assigned 3 papers and a final, with one of the papers being optional. There was plenty of extra credit as well.
hard but good teacher
Relevant topics that are interesting. The professor helps you discover your voice and make a statement about the topics discussed. The reading were always connected to the topics. Very efficient outline for the material and assignments. Professor encouraged community building within the class.
Minnie's class was one of my favorite classes I've taken at Hunter. I found her class to be particularly engaging. The topics she covers are interesting and eye opening. The class felt like reading a book you can't put down, she's just awesome. So passionate and you can tell she truly cares about her students and wants them to do well.
She cares about her students a lot and gives a lot of opportunities for them to pass. She gives tons of extra credit and only assigns three papers and a final. One of those papers is optional. There is a lot of reading so be prepared for that. Overall, her class was not that bad as people are making it seem.
Prof. Minnie honestly cares for her students a lot. She'll definitely expect you to do the readings, but they're interesting and very thought-provoking. She'll break all the concepts down to you and help you with your papers. If you can't read, skim! But honestly you'll do fine as long as you just try to understand.
Professor Mignonette Chiu is an intelligent devoted individual who genuinely cares for her students. Shes very funny, opinionated, smart and caring. This class was great because it enlightens you on whats going on in our world today. Provides a lot of factual information, great for writing your papers. A lot of reading but, interesting topics
Taking this class with Ms. Chiu has been a mind opener. Things I've never acknowledged made positive changes. There are a lot of reading materials, but the readings are fascinating which relates to the papers you will be assigned throughout the semester. In addition, she gives students plenty chances with extra credit. I recommend taking her.
Professor Mignonette Chiu is a sweetheart. She actually help me adjust to her class. Her expectations? You have to work hard on your essays and come to class 90% of the time so you wouldnt miss the material. However, if you dont understand the assignment she would do paper sessions and it help me a lot.
I took Minnies American Studies class at Pace. Minnie is wonderful. She clearly cares so much about her students, and makes sure you all know that. I was impressed with her in-depth feedback, her knowledge on politics and social justice, and shes extremely passionate. Shes empathetic and has faith in all of her students.
One of the best I ever had. Very respectful and open to working with the students so that we can be successful. I learned a lot from her and she really helped open my eyes to the things we don't always see.
She is an amazing professor who wants you to improve by working hard. You must read before her class or youll hurt your chances of getting a good grade on your paper. She provides everything that you need to pass, its just up to you to show up. Take her class despite the negative reviews you see. Shes an encouraging prof and you wont regret it.
Minnie is an amazing professor. Would take her again in a heart beat!
Minnie was one of the best professors I have ever had! Her passion really makes you want to come to class and do the readings. I highly recommend participating in discussions and getting involved. I also had a lot of personal issues during this semester and was very supportive, understanding and even spoke with me to help me through it.
Profesor Chiu is a wonderful and caring professor. Her lectures/class discussions are very interesting and you will definitely walk out of class knowing something new every time. They way she cares about her students is extremely heartwarming. If you have the opportunity, please take her class!
Prof Chiu is very caring and personable. She teaches a very interesting class and always provided extra supporting material during the class. Yes, the class is heavy reading for a 100 level class but this is not up to the professor. However her grading was very discouraging to me. It made me feel like I was not able to write a single paper.
What more could you ask for than an eye-opening class and a caring professor? While she does expect a lot from her students, she wishes to see them succeed and improve as writers.
Love her! Great teacher, especially her class Transnational Feminism
The reading material was fine but the overall experience was very stressful, many just dropped out in the middle of the semester. Disorganized. The syllabus and writing assignments were changed constantly. The grading criteria and requirements were unclear. The professor was hard to reach outside of the class. Avoid.
Be prepared and willing to learn and youll be fine. Expect bulky but manageable readings, consider this prior to creating your schedule or making adjustments. Basically just try and pay attention and youll learn,
Professor Minnie is one of the most kindest professors you will ever meet. She actually cares about her students & teaches you valuable things. The only homeworks she assigns are readings & some tend to be long so some people may not like that. 4 papers are assigned as well. However, I recommend taking her class. You wont regret it !!!
Prof. Chiu is one of a kind! She's very personable and close to her students. She's very supportive and very understanding as long as you put some effort on her classes. The classes she teaches are heavy on readings therefore the assigned papers are not easy if the reading is not done properly.
Minnie is one of those professors you can approach outside of class for any reason. There is a lot of reading and she expects you to do it all to be able to write good papers and think critically, this class is was a great experience overall, would take again, take the feedback and incorporate in future papers. Material is thought provoking.
Minnie was one of the best teachers I have ever had. She pushes her students to think critically and through different lenses, while also having fun with the curriculum. There is a lot of reading, I suggest you read everything if you want to know what's going on, but it's easy if you're interested and papers are not too hard. Highly recommend!
One of the sweetest Professors at Hunter! She is very understanding and accommodating to others needs. For her transnational feminism class, there were two individual papers, and one group research paper. Readings are mandatory and she does appreciate when you participate! She really wants all of her students to pass!
Minnie is a sweet and caring professor. Her class isn't particularly hard and she does offer lots of extra credit opportunities and holds paper sessions before every paper is due to really help you understand the prompt and what she's looking for. She is also very understanding and flexible. However, there is a lot of reading assignments.
Professor Chiu is the best. She is the type of person you can reach out to when you feel you are lost, and who really wants you to do good .While she assigns a lot of readings, she makes sure to offer paper sessions until everyone feels they are feeling good about the paper. This is an experience that I would recommend to everyone.
Expect a lot of readings and to watch documentaries and films, you'll need them to write your paper. you'll be graded through 3 papers but she offers a lot of paper sessions, to help with the writing process. really understanding and passionate about teaching wgs. offers a lot of extra credit opportunities and grants extensions for the papers.
Minnie is one of the most caring professors at Hunter. She is committed to helping students succeed and find community in the class. Lots of reading, but that is standard and necessary for any WGS course. Expectations for papers were a little unclear, but she held paper sessions that really helped clarify. She's a real sweetheart!
Professor Chui is really disorganized. She didn't stick to the schedule and I genuinely never knew what was going on. She was late on grading and was constantly pushing back due dates. She also treated students with disrespect and constantly went off topic. Avoid if you actually want to learn something.
She takes a long time to grade your work and gives multiple articles from 10-60 pages or documentaries in a week. Documentaries ranging from 1-2 hours. For a 100 class, this class is more work than other classes.
takes forever to return papers while also being basically unreachable. She consistently over assigns readings while having nowhere near enough class time to discuss them. Says its to "prepare you for grad school" but ultimately it falls flat when she skips sessions she scheduled.
Professor Chiu was very understanding throughout the entire semester, more so than any of my other professors. Listened to students' wishes, and assigned group work almost every week, and if you work with your group it's really not that much. I say almost because she was very considerate of when papers were due. Would definitely take again.
Professor Chiu is an outstanding educator. The work load is fairly heavy but highly rewarding. I think it's incredibly important to experience having a Professor like her at some point in ones education. She wants you to be successful as a student and as a person.
Minnie cares deeply for her students and always goes above and beyond to make herself available for anything related to Hunter or not. She does assign a lot of readings and forced people to work in groups. She also assigns a lot of papers that are vague in description and require a long time to get them back. But she is a really great person
This class is too much. She expects you to read long boring articles each class. So about 4 long articles in a week and then wants a group discussion board. Which gives you no time to actually focus on one thing. I wouldn't take her again. Only intro level courses have nice reviews.
This professors expectations are ridiculous. She assigns over 200 pages of reading per week and expects annotations on all of them. She doesnt follow her own deadlines that she sets and she doesnt respond to students reaching out for help because the work is so overwhelming. Avoid at all costs I wish I could drop this course.
(Fall 2020) She is a lovely person who cares about providing a great education. She gives specific & encouraging feedback. But so much work + high expectations; tons of required readings, required participation, group work, individual journals, 3-4 big papers. But the material was thought-provoking and opened my mind. I'll never forget this class.
She's a sweet woman, but this class really frustrated me for a few reasons. She's very disorganized- assigned lots of papers and details/due dates for these assignments were never clear. She assigns an absurd amount of reading for each class and grades the annotations. In class she talks to us like children which I HATED. I learned very little tbh.
There was a lot of reading and a few papers. You really have to be in your best in order to do good. The course does properly reward the effort you put in.
her class is really interesting and i enjoyed going to class, however, the reading is a lot and she randomly calls on ppl if nobody participates.
she is really so nice and caring and if you try hard you will do well in her class she is very approachable too if you have problems
Professor Chiu is great. Be ready to read and participate in class. She is a little bit disorganized but overall it is a really good class. You will learn a lot and expand your knowledge.
Great professor, lectures are interesting and really provoke conversation in the class. The class is made up of 4 essays, which are not time consuming nor too complicated. My only complaint is the lack of trigger warnings for really intense scenes in films, there was a violent assault scene in a film with no warning that made me need to leave class
Great professor, she was very king and helpful I would take her again
You can tell she is very passionate about the subject. She encourages to you to think and see new perspectives.
I absolutely love this professor! she is very flexible and will extend deadlines constantly. absolutely no homework just essays throughout the course. theres a lot of reading but honestly it was always very interesting. discussions are always great with her!
Professor Chiu was great, it is clear that she cares about her students and if you have trouble handing in assignments, she's so understanding about it and will work with you on it (make sure to reach out about it though). Prepare to read, but don't fret, this class is pretty much an easy A.
This professor is very caring both in and out of the classroom. Get ready to read a LOT, but the content is usually very interseting anyways. She provides a lot of extra credit opportunities.
Extremely flexible, and accommodating to students. Overall the course, isn't difficult but does center around the readings assigned, so it's advised to stay on track on those.
Professor Chiu is so kind and understanding of all her students! You will not regret taking this class, I promise. I handed in a paper late and she still gave me an A on it and told me not to worry. Her lectures are also super interesting! If you like reading and writing you'll like this class :).
Very understanding professor with clear expectations. Participation is heavily encouraged and all students are respected.
This was my favorite course I've taken this semester. The professor is very lively and engaging and I enjoyed hearing her talk as I've learned so much. The movies were fun to watch in class. However, the readings were long and dense and I wish they were shortened a bit.
Very nice professor and truly cares about the subject. Not a tough grader. The material is very interesting and engaging. Would highly recommend.
Hard class, but the professor makes it worth it
If you take this class, you would need to read a lot for every class, but that is expected for a woman and gender studies class. She is very understanding when it comes to due dates, so she would often push back due dates. She does give good feedback and tries the best she can.
I took Professor Chiu last semester for my WGS 100 class and I took her again for WGS 244 because professor Chiu is great. She is really caring, listens to your concerns, and really pushes you to grow. I would totally recommend her classes.
Minnie is very kind and sweet. She cares about her students and takes time in class to talk about real life issues we all have to undergo this day in age. Her class feels like a safe space which I really appreciate. there IS a lot of reading so prepare for that and about 4 papers. topics are interesting and will widen your feminist perspective.
Professor Chiu is so nice and is very caring. I really enjoyed this class and it was very interesting. There are four papers and a lot of reading, but the readings were always really interesting. I would highly recommend taking this class!
Everyone should take this class, Professor Chiu is great at explaining our social constructs and feminist theories , it's an eye-opening class
This whole rating is such a scam lmao. Professor I know you are the one writing these, its embarrassing. You are making a level 100 class feel like a capstone. Please be honest to yourself and to other student and let those 1/5 rating come through. Let see how fast your 5/5 drop.
5/5 my brown behind
AVOID AT ALL COST ! has to be the most confusing professor I have ever taken ! Look for better professors...She gave us lengthy readings on issues that were in no way related to gender studies and makes the class focus on her and her life and her experiences as a le$b!an female and if you speak of something else not relating to her will get upset
WORST CLASS AND PROFESSOR EVER ! She focuses the class only on her and hates when you speak on something not related on her & no i am not writing this because i failed. Many classmates dropped because how awful her course is
Way too many readings, like way too much for a beginner course, I have other classes.
Not a standard 100 level, which is misleading..very reading & writing heavy. She doesn't cover articles &book ch's in detail, which necessary for the 3-4 papers & EC. Most articles r confusing and w/o prior context. Only 7 pp slides/lil info. As a person, she's cool. I'd prefer she just teach, lots class time wasted listening to student opinions.
Ms. Chiu is a genuine professor who cares for all her students. I would definitely take her again. She makes you think critically and really question things which I never thought of before. Its lots of work but its worth it!
Professor Chiu is absolutely amazing! I am so thankful that I took her class and met her. She made an impact on my life. She gave me a lot of perspective on transnational feminism but also helped me improve by teaching me and my classmate's concepts and skills we can use in the real world. I wish I could retake this class again.
She is a great professor!
She talks a lot but you can take a lot from her lectures depending on how open-minded you are. You learn a lot, whether what you learn impacts your life or not depends on you
Grade by few things. Heavy lecture
Good professor, This class forces you to really dig beyond surface, the class discussions were all pretty interesting !
Good teacher
An amazing teacher! She listens to you and is able to help you out! She really is passionate about making change and has the ability to connect with you. She will care about her students and while the paper (4 of them) rely on citations, they're easy to understand. Overall, a good class and a great professor! Would learn from her again!
Prof Chiu is passionate about what she teaches. However, this course is far from an intro level. Papers are based on long, difficult readings that we don't discuss in class (but are assigned for hw). Lectures are extremely boring and time is often wasted b/c the prof goes off on a tangent. This course didn't teach me anything new.
AWFUL!!!!
I took two classes with Minnie. They were among the most challenging classes I took at Hunter but this is exactly why she is awesome. She works very hard to make sure she gets the best out of her students. I don't know what my education would be without those two classes and I am not exaggerating. They definitely had an impact on my performance.
Super easy class and helpful professor with tons of extra credit.
She's passionate about what she teaches. You definitely learn if you pay attention.
Great course. If you pay attention and do the homework, the essays and participation becomes much easier.
Wonderful professor, I think she was the best I had this semester. Her lectures are both fun and informative. I would definitely take it again.
Prof Chiu is extremely caring and thoughtful, she leads super engaging lectures during class and very obviously cares a lot for her students. The class is over all pretty easy however there is a lot of reading for homework so be ready to do a lot of reading through the semester. Overall a wonderful teacher who is funny and helpful :)
Professor Chiu was the sweetest most caring professor I have ever had. She truly cares about the future and wellbeing of her students. This class was very eye opening and this professor facilitates a safe, enriching discussion space for students to understand all layers of the material and engage with it. Everyone should take a class with her!
My favorite professor I've ever had. Definitely challenges you but if you show up, do the work and have interest in the topic you will get an A. Lots of reading but they are very interesting and she explains them in class. She really cares about her students like no others and will work with you if you need anything.
The professor is very good and she explains everything clearly and she create an open space for people to say how they feel and be comfortable. You also learn a lot in this class that can be very important in the near future
Lots of reading We had 3 mandatory essays No exams
Yes, there are a a lot of readings but they are all very interesting and help a lot when it comes to writing the papers. I through the class was pretty chill and Professor Chiu made class really fun. Her personality is one of a kind and I definitely recommend taking wgs with her!
Amazing professor; She explains everything and creates an open space for to express yourself and your thoughts. No exams, just 3 mandatory papers and lots of reading which helps with your paper.
Very kind professor! The class consists of three papers, but be aware she has very high standards and is a harsh grader (she does offer multiple extra credit opportunities). There is also a lot of assigned mandatory readings, and she is very against electronic use in class (& even banned them in mine). She heavily encourages participation.
The readings are interesting but there are to many of them you are required to make notes on each one and she will comment if she dont like your notes. Sent individual emails to students saying they needs to do better. Pls avoid
Workload is too much even for a parttime student. GPA dropped because I couldnt take notes on readings exactly how she wanted (which we had to hand in). Mostly reading and writing but harder than any WI course. I asked for help and the professor made time for me, but basically just told me she "believed in me" and that I "could do better".
Ted talks were great and readings were really interesting. 3 7-ish page papers, lots of extra credit opportunities (more papers). The readings were too much for me to handle with other classes tho. She required readings to be annotated in a special app and then messaged us individually to "do better" when I really thought I was doing well.
Does not teach. Way too much work!! Unfair grading and all papers. Acts like only her opinion matters. Avoid at all cost
I signed up for her bc the ratings were better than another's, but I wish I nvr switched classes. She is downright awful, gives at least 2 articles that are around 20 pages long that need to be annotated prior to the next class. She grades horribly and if your opinion differs from her she will spend the whole class attempting to humiliate you.
Although the class was heavy with readings, they were very interesting and quite easy to engage in. Professor Chiu gives a lot of extra credit opportunities throughout the semester which are extremely helpful. Very caring and supportive!
The class is very interesting and entertaining to be in. One thing I would like her to improve in her teachings is to be more clear with her points because sometimes it can be confusing.
There is a substantial amount of reading in the class, so you have to pace yourself to make sure you can provide comments for each reading. She also appreciates participation, so I would place an emphasis on making comments.
She was wonderful! There's a lot of readings but she is understanding of everyone's time and she even lightened the workload in response to student's feedback. You learn a lot from her and you can really look at many things in a different perspective. There's a couple of papers and she gives a lot of helpful feedback on them.
Prof Chiu is a very kindhearted and understanding professor. She curates readings that are relevant to the written assignments and are also very interesting. Lecture is also very insightful and important to attend and she speaks about the papers and possible writing points. Overall great professor.
She is a great professor, really interested in teaching the class. It was pretty good working with her throughout the semester. I did however struggle with the readings, I feel like some of them were too much in content. It would be nice if they were cut down to better just focus on a few authors.
Caring
It is an introductory class where you will have to read more than 3 documents per week and comment in Perusall. Besides, there are 3 papers in total (1st and 4th are mandatory) She is very approachable and you can ask her if you have any doubts. However, be prepared to participate in class and read the material, they are helpful for the papers.
Professor Minnie Chiu is very enthusiastic and kind. Explains with a lot of examples and detail in her lecture. She expects participation and assigns papers and readings throughout the semester so get ready to read. Professor Chiu is very understanding with her students and encourages them to be better and engage on the course.
Professor Minnie Chiu is very caring and cares about the job. Gives students a bunch of extra credit and cares about them. She will work with you to better your grade. This class will change your perspective and teach you some new topics. Worth it!
She was easily understood while speaking to the class whereas understood us and our thoughts as students. Her feedback towards me personally was helpful where she helped me become a better writer through easily spoken explanations and the main ideas of majority of the class.
Minimal slides/presentations, barely wrote anything on the board, and then complained that we don't have notes. All she did was talk at us and show videos. Also used Perusall, a reading homework website that grades automatically (and horribly). An amazing, sweet, and caring person, but her teaching style was not that good.
The lectures and discussions made me think a lot , challenged my thought process consistently, and and were informative, engaging, and even fun to attend. The professor herself was amazing- funny, caring, open-minded, well-spoken, thoughtful, etc. Probably my one of my favorite professors/classes I've taken.
You can tell she really cares about her students and has a genuine interest in teaching them about this. She gives a lot of readings that need to be annotated so that takes a lot of time. This course is really time consuming outside of class and might not be worthy it if you have other classes more important for your major
She is a good professor loves her students and is very caring one of the few professor that I know that truly cares She holds paper session where she gives you feedback on the upcoming paper it helps That being said she offers a lot of extra credit so they can boost the grade Heavy reading and she gives recommendations letters no matter final grade
She grows on you as the semester goes on. A lot of hw and writing but it's manageable if you can manage time, but beware of perusall which is a rigged grading system. 4 papers (3 mandatory) and extra credit given. She's hilarious and sweet (and she'll write u a recommendation!)
do NOT take this class, wallahi she gonna violate your time.
didn't expect this from a level 100 course. please reconsider placing this into your schedule.
did not learn a single thing the entire time taking this course, not at all what i expected for a 100 level course. there are 4 papers throughout the semester each 5 ish pages requirements. topics are not too bad but some are unclear and she grades extremely heavy. the homework website is free but wouldnt take it find a diff course
Please reconsider taking her class. the class itself is easy as long as your good at critical thinking, but she just does the most all the time. Assigning hella readings, consistently going over class time, going on sermons about life after college.
Professor Chiu is very knowledgable about what she teaches. She makes you think a little harder about things the average person barely looks into.
Very fun professor, goes off track a bit but always entertaining
easy class
While Chiu is clearly passionate about WGS, she lacks an ability to keep students engaged, focused and desired to contribute. Often takes severe tangents, with little to no bearing on the topic and readings that were supposed to be discussed. She asks intrusive questions about students personal lives. Overall, I found my interest in WGS lessened.
Best professor ever . Highly recommend to take her class anyone who wants to know about WGS
the professor is easy to get along with and understand her students very well.
she is an excellent professor and the class is really good, the only bad thing is that she give a lot of reading in Perusall.
She cares very much for her students and helping them grasp the material. Amazing professor.
I enrolled in this class on the recommendation of a friend. The professor is impressively knowledgeable and fully committed to her students' progress. She covers topics that I hadn't fully appreciated before, highlighting the importance of language and critical thinking abilities. I strongly recommend taking her class.
Knowledgable, engaging, and caring.
This professor tends to go on LONG tangents often and has asked VERY intrusive questions to students in which they were visibly uncomfortable answering, only to pressure them into answering. I don't recommend this prof. at all unless you want to lose brain cells and hate having free time. There was also mad readings that took way too long to do.
This class was genuinely unenjoyable. Her lectures were so random and just weird in general especially with the way she approaches certain topics. She tends to asks students uncomfortable questions and she changes the narratives of certain things to fit her message. She gave a crazy amount of readings. Try to take another teacher and not her.
On May,14 the professor made us to rate her here, right in class in front of her... no deep articles discussions in the class. she talked a lot about her private life. or put YouTube video, not related to done readings. The articles were not graded>2 mos. Extra credits were not graded. doesn't accept anydifferent from her opinion, only gets irritated
I never participated. A lot of reading and short response. I skimmed it. Trys to sway students into her own opinion. Says muscular men are most likely narcissists and take steroids and not being fat is a lifestyle change and not exercise. Talks to you like a baby. So much to say about her but cannot fit it in. Shows so much we learn in class :)
She was very nice to me, never took a WGS class before and actually enjoyed it, learned a lot. I definitely would recommend the class and professor.
Professor Chiu is a amazing professor. She explains everything very clearly and gives individual attention to every student.
Class was a little hard bc iit's during the semester. But overall,it's an easy class.Just lots of readings you have to keep up with. Consists of 3 papers + you critique films applying concepts from the readings. If ur struggling with writing attend her paper sessions!! Many extra credit opportunities based off of films she shows in class.
She is very passionate about what she teaches!
The class can be challenging with lots of readings, but Professor Chiu is helpful. Using Unstuckstudy alongside the free textbook and office hours really helped me do well. Overall, a rewarding experience.
Great teaching skills, I never get bored!
she really cares about her students. there's lots of readings and papers but she is always there to help if needed. just make sure to participate and you'll do great.
Good Teacher, Good Class
She is a very kind professor, as long as you pay attention in her lectures you will be fine. The papers she assigns are not very hard even though she does have very clear expectations on what she wants you to write about. Overall though I would take her again her lectures were very interesting and enlightening.
Professor Chiu is very knowledgeable and makes lectures interesting with real-world examples. The assignments are clear and manageable, and she is always willing to answer questions during office hours. However, some of the exams were tougher than expected. I learned a lot and would recommend her class to others!"
Great professor and intriguing lectures. Kind and understanding. 10000/10
Super nice overall, reading intensive not workload heavy tho, gives opportunities to make up work and is understanding
The lectures are informational but entertaining. She is very understanding but pushes you to do your best work.
Disclaimer: All students are required to complete RMP in class with this Prof.
She is a great professor she just tends to talk the entire class. There are a lot of readings and only thing that matters is 3 papers for the course. She is caring not just about the education but also you and your mental health since some topics tend to get sensitive! I definitely recommend her as a teacher! She is a friend not just a teacher !
She's a great person, and her lectures feel more like class discussions rather than just reading off a paper or slideshow. She values different perspectives and encourages participation. There are four papers assigned, but only three are required. The final paper is five pages, and she's understanding enough to extend the due date.
she's kind and genuinely taught me a lot. she barely took attendance but she does remember who participates and participation matters. there is a lot to read for homework but she gives good feedback for your papers and is a pretty fair grader. she's the sweetest person ever and offers ALOT of extra credit opportunities.
Class discussions were really great. Her stories are inspiring, but she does repeat them. Lots of reading, but they're all good. Lots of papers, but she gives really good feedback. Her class is a bit disorganized with due dates and lectures never seem to get finished. She's kind of aggressive with students in class. The assignments lack clarity.
Amazing! She not only motivated students but she deeply cares for them.
She is very clear on her expectations when it comes to papers and readings. She does offer extra credit opportunities. Get ready to read though, the readings aren't really "heavy", but if you sit down and power through it, they won't be long. Would take again, she cares for your grade and yourself, i recommend!
Cares about her students and encourages them to think critically.
Overall had a great experience in this course. The course is very reading heavy. Expect anywhere from 15-30 pages on persuall per class so be prepared. Chiu gives great feedback on papers and offers extra credit.
Good class, lots of reading and only 3 papers and attendance.she also posts lots of extra credits
Provides excellent lectures while also having discussions that intrigue the whole class to participate. Very attentive and gets to know each student by name, truly cares about what they are teaching and their students.
Professor Chiu is immensely kind, and gives great lectures on the history of women's studies. For this class you'll need to keep up with your Perusall readings, participate a lot, and do 3 papers (5-6 pages each). If you can do that, she's a good option to have
This is a great class to take if you want to enter woman and gender studies.
Amazing and gives good feedback. Cares for her students deeply.
Her class makes me actually learn than just feel bored. This class is reading heavy, need to read those things the day before or a few days before, for the class. Discussion heavy classes, but very engaging, very positive energy, love her arguments and the things she discusses in relation to the things that are happening in the world right now.
Very good teacher!
She will have you read a lot but she's very insightful
Homework is mostly reading and writing. Almost fell asleep during lecture.
A lot of reading and 3 papers (5-6 pages each). She was amazing though!
Her lecture is more conversations meaning she likes to talk then like giving a heavy lecture. Readings happens always. But good course overall and definitely easy pass.
Very engaging lecturer and very passionate about her work and students!
Professor Chu convinces students that the social/political issues are relevant to each of us. She also breaks down complex concepts in a way that is easy to understand.
Give good feed back
Prof Chiu is really passionate about WGS and it shows in her lectures where she is actively engaging with every student. But other than that she is a very tough grader and don't expect your papers to be graded in a timely manner or fairly. What you think is an A paper will come back as a B with 3 pages of feedback. Nice person, too many papers.
Give too many reading, goes off on tangents during class, and continues to talk over class time repeatedly. You know it's bad when she's making it a requirement for students to complete a RMP for her.
Super unclear about deadlines and what is expected of the papers. Also don't speak in class if you don't share the same opinions as her or everyone else in the class because she will go on tangents singling you out. Lowkey a nutjob have no clue why her RMP is so high. WILL call you out for using phones or any kind of device during class.
Her rubric guidelines are very unclear! The singling out RMP rating is true. It is a beginner class but she has too much expectations. Our class mostly consist of lower classmen not WGS majors from Columbia!! We already have lengthy perusall work, why not use lecture to help us understand what you want from the paper? Everyone is confused!
Very sweet woman, but unclear deadlines and takes a long time to return work. Very politically divisive/extreme, can't handle other opinions, goes on long tangents. Asks intrusive questions to students and overshares about her personal life/resentment towards her family. Class had a clear political agenda. Liked her as a person, very kind and warm.
3 essays during the semester. A lot of feedback given. Encourages participation. We have an article to read before every class so make sure you read.
She is pretty talkative, and the lectures get off course often. Can't say I've learned much on the topic of gender studies through this course. Also will call you out if you're not focusing on the "lecture."
She's cool. The papers aren't bad at all but sometimes the class can get very off topic. If this is your major I don't know if I would recommend the class but if you just need a credit then definitely take it
She is very considerate and always helps students
This class taught me to think critically about women's issues and what we deem as "normal" in society. While she is a good teacher there is a lot of reading involved
Bubbly approach to teaching and strict on devices even with note taking
She's a very nice and caring person, but the class is reading intensive. And she can't take or accept any ideas except for hers. Just kind of pushes them on you, sometimes I felt very uncomfortable.
The class is average and you'll pass if you focus, do what you have to do, and take some notes. Chiu's nice but there are times where the work she gives can feel overwhelming, especially the Perusall readings. She is a bit tough when it comes to the papers. But she does give feedback and is observant in how you use the sources in your paper.
Class discussions were definitely more interesting than the readings. It's reading-intensive with annotation required before class, but they were hardly mentioned in the discussions. Only 3 papers that were anticipated with time before, so not too bad. Discussions were a bit unorganized and didn't seem to correlate with the readings.
Professor Minnie is one of the most chill and funny professors I had. She really tries her best to encourage participation and involvement. Definitely lectures are based on the weekly homework readings. The homework is fairly easy but a lot of reading (only some are difficult).
Readings are kinda hard for me.
Make sure you read all the readings and participate as much as you can to make a good impression. You should be fine, but rely on your classmates to understand the full scope of what is going on because at times you may not understand. Sometimes it feels like a self directed course with supplemental instruction. Overall, really interesting concepts
Attendance required; professor uses Perusall for readings. Assignments due before each class. Total of 3 papers required, with you being able to choose to do either paper 2 or 3. Tough grader in the sense that she provides meaningful feedback on your work and wants to see that you actually understand the material. Kind and caring, would take again!
Prof. Chiu really cares about her students and the course material. Lectures can wobble a bit on the preachy side at times, but she means well and gives a lot of feedback on work to try and help you write better.
Professor Chiu is an outstanding Women and Gender Studies professor who creates a supportive and intellectually engaging learning environment. She is highly knowledgeable about the course material and passionate about the field. Throughout the semester, she has gone the extra mile to ensure her students feel encouraged and equipped to succeed.
Just no. Do yourself a favor and choose another WSG professor.
She's really enthusiastic about teaching and class is engaging. Introduces lots of great concepts to class. But she gets really repetitive in class, had the same lecture twice a couple times. Assigned so much reading that she didn't have time in class to convey the core ideas in each reading. Also very moody and got aggressive in class.
Within the first two weeks of classes the professor was questions that I overstepped boundaries . And she doesn't offer a lot of the help she claims that she does. the professor often goes off topic or has conversations that aren't related to the class.
If participation is challenging for you, this class may feel uncomfortable. The course demands a SIGNIFICANT amount of effort, and the grading is INCREDIBLY vigorous for vague assignments. Readings are extensive and thought-provoking but overwhelming at times. Course is insightful but DEMANDING of your time unlike most electives. She is nice though
