A lot of people like him, and he did make classes exciting. BUT, if you suck at languages, and if he doesn't like you cause your a gringo, then watch out cause he won't be very much help and you'll have to find another route to fulfill the language req!
He dosn't grade fair. He grades according to who he like rather than who showed up for class everyday and who did the work. He dosn't make you turn in your homework most of the time. Class was fun to go to if you like laughing at everyones mistakes.
the best spanish teachers EVER! he made it fun, the best kind of learning environment, and you had to talk, participation. i dunno what these other people are talking about, he is the BEST period
Great professor! The fool who rated him on 7/14 isn't bright enough to realize Senor Zapata married a grindo. Do the work, don't expect it to be handed to you, and chill. Oh, and yes he knows who does their homework.
Awesome professor, fun and never boring.. you will learn a lot only if you decide to participate.. not a class where you can sit like a rock and pass..
makes you work, but very worth it in the end
He was a great teacher. Made class fun!
very easy, do the work and participate in class! be prepared to get a little uncomfotable, he likes to talk about pot and drinking but makes it funny, easy A if you do the work.
AWESOME PROFESSOR! Entertaining, adapts to his audience. Makes everything relevant to the test and is a great teacher. He is a bit difficultbut fair. I personally didn't get a passing grade in his course, but it was on my behalf. THIS GUY ROCKS!
Hilarious, one of the few classes I've really enjoyed attending, despite the fact that I'm terrible at Spanish. If you attend class and put in effort, you'll get a good grade.
Ridiculously difficult, DO NOT TAKE DURING WINTER SESSION- does not cover material well, constantly jokes instead of teaching, and then failed an entire class minus the top 3 who walked out with c's- BEWARE!
The best Spanish professor I've had. Made a difficult course understandable. Not the easiest class, but he is willing to go out of his way to help you! Go to class, and do the work and you'll do fine. He is super funny too, which makes class fun.
Always makes jokes and does a good job teaching the class. Grades fairly but it is difficult to get an A.
Participation is a must for this class. I wished I put in more effort. Take him if your up to the challenge to learn spanish but don't count on an easy A or B.
nice guy but doesn't have any order. He needs to get a grade book and auctually use it. Keep all your test scores, he wont. Also...he can be a little ****ed.
Zapata is a really nice guy, and he is very funny. However, the class is really hard!! Even if you show up to class every day and do all of the assignments you are not guaranteed to pass! The tests are extremely difficult. Make sure to study everything for chapter tests and keep essay q's as sim
First day i was completely scared and then he warmed up and spoke more english the second week. Hilarious guy and excellent teacher, one of the best teachers I have ever had, try and take 102 and 201 with him.
Professor is very unprofessional. Jokes around in class without taking student feelings into consideration. Also unsure/unaware of Spanish terminology not from Mexico. Quick to judge as incorrect but in reality a regional issue.
Funny cool guy. However this is an extremely difficult class. He grades way too strict. I felt like I was almost fluent in spanish by the end of this class and still only got a C. Needs to realize this class is for basic convesational spanish not Spanish Hemmingway.
GREAT PROFESSOR. So far these are the best two classes I have taken in my three years at Cal State. He is soo funny which made it a lot easier to go to class. Tests are a little bit difficult, but you can get a good grade as long as you do the homework.
He is one of the best professors I have had at this school. His classes are very hard, I worked my butt off to get a B, but I know my Spanish. Just be sure to participate, sit in front and have fun with it all- it will come much easier!
An awesome guy, i dunno what the heck the rest of these joe-schmos are talking about. He teaches you what you need to know and gives you EXACTLY what is on the exams, take him and thank me later..
He's funny. Hope you can understand spanish the first day of class to the last, becuase that's all he speaks 99.9% of the class, yet he does a good job helping you understand just what in the heck he's saying. Test's are indeed tough!
hes hella funny, but really difficult to understand, and not sympathetic to understanding your difficulty. get someone else instead
very entertaining, if you cant understand spanish from native speakers, heads up cause he speaks it a lot of the time. hes nice and patient if you are.
he made spanish fun to learn and he was very helpful in memorizing the conjugations. Very funny, nice, and helpful. i wish I had him for 201
as corny as it sounds, he made learning spanish pretty fun. harder class but most effective span class i ever had
Prof. Zapata was the best Spanish teacher I have ever had!
i suck at spanish but this class was chill. i took it with friends an we had alot of fun. Profe is pretty laid back but he will put you on the spot. tests werent too hard because he reviewed. my best spanish teacher.
Span class with him is NOT worth your money. But you can pass it easily without even trying. Don't stress his tests. You'll learn more about his political prefrences, family problems, and cultural stereotypes than you ever wanted to know. PS..if you are white...be prepared to be guilty for stealing California from the Mexicans. Not right.
Sr. Zapata was a great teacher. I hadn't taken Spanish in 2 1/2 years and I got A's on all but one test (B) and I didn't study much. Just make sure you pay attention in class and participate. He does speak Spanish in class though, but he is patient with you. He was helpful as well. I'm goign to take Span 201 with him.
Sr. Zapata is an awesome teacher. He truly cares about each and every student and he wants everyone to do well. He is extremely helpful and easy to ask for help. He is funny and keeps the class moving. There is never a boring moment. It is easy to learn in his class because he teaches the material so well. He is fun and so is the class. TAKE IT!!!
Sr. Zapata is the best. He actually makes learning Spanish pretty fun. Coming in, I just wanted to get it over with. But he has made it enjoyable to learn Spanish. He always makes jokes about everything. He does speak almost no English, so be prepared. I hope that I have him for 201, since I know he is not teaching it this summer.

Professor Zapata is an outstanding instructor. He's always happy to help students and clearly explains the concepts (better than the book). Make sure that you attend each class and participate as much as possible. The exams are tough but if you know the formulas and concepts from the class lessons, then you'll do fine.

awesome teacher. Take him if you can. You will learn alot and pass with a good grade if you try.
I love him...he is my spanish teddy bear. Great man...I may fail class...but what can I do, I had a crappy professor the semester before.
Great teacher! I don't normally like Spanish that much, but his class was great and so much fun!
horrible
This teacher is the best spanish teacher i ever had. he is a very funny person and i mean funny. he likes to teach with a little bit of comedy. he will put you one the spot hehe. it happened to me a couple times. but overall i would recommend this teacher
This Señor is truly a sweetheart. He'll put you on the spot for the first two weeks to clean up his students, but if you have the will, you'll really enjoy his class. He's such a hilarious Mexican from talking about ugly babies to smoking weed.Just take into consideration that he'll speak in Spanish the majority of the time.I'll miss that crazy man=[
Doesn't like Hispanic students that don't speak Spanish. If you are Hispanic he expects you to know the Language. I aksed for extra worksheets for help, he said he would leave them in his box and never did. Had to remind him about 5 times before I finally gave up.
No powerpoints to follow or study. Teaches material not in the book. Demeaning, Not helpful, and constantly late for class.
TERRIBLE! He only speaks in Spanish & has NO sympathy for those who struggle with the subject. I dropped the class with a "W."After getting a D on the first test and asking for help, he told me I should drop the class, and offered no help and said I should retake 101 (I was also 4 classes away from graduating!) Take Carlos Gomez at Palomar instead
I took all 3 classes w/Profe 2x, cuz I failed F -then earned a B, each time. It was crazy hard, and I hated every moment of the class because I was uncomfortable. BUT I learned Spanish, 10 years later I still speak my broken spanish. Oh yeah..California IS northern Mexico - study your history people and get over it! Miguel made me learn, Thanks!
Zapata is absolutely hilarious. Don't take this class if you don't have a sense of humor. He speaks spanish 75% of the time, but it shouldn't be anything you can't understand if you've taken spanish in high school or had a good 101 tacher. He is really laid back and always looking for the next laugh. I'm definitely taking his 201 class.
I have learned more spanish in his 101 class than i have learned in three years of spanish in high school. first week very difficult if you have never taken spanish, but trust me you will learn alot! you have no choice but to interact with the class because he asks many many questions
Pretty easy class, yet VERY hands on. You will have to participate alot, but in the end it's worth it. Makes alot of jokes and makes the class fun. I would reccomend him!!
He is late almost every class by 10-15 minutes and really disorganized. Then he would pick on other people who were late!
Prof Zapata is HILLARIOUS! I really am enjoying his class this semester. I do hope he is teaching spanish 201 because i will definitely take him again. He has a great sense of humor and is willing to help you as long as you are willing to learn. He gives you chances to ask for help so there isn't any reason to fail unless you simply didn't try!
Very funny guy, I loved his class. Some homework n' about 3 or 4 tests throughout the semester. A 5 minute speech is required near the end but don't stress about it cuz it's not that bad n' i think he grades it fairly easy. Use notecards n' a powerpoint with sum movie clips in there n' you should be all good.
class was really hard, one of the tests over half the class got Fs and Ds. mean and unsympathetic. if you want to learn, don't take him because he throws lessons at you and expects you to get it. mean to you if you struggle or ask questions. thinks he is cool because he knows Spanish and tries to use it to make himself look smart, though he isn't.
If you have trouble with span don't ever take him, even if you have to wait another semester and take it with someone else. if you are good with span you will like him. he teaches really fast doesn't go over much and speaks only in Spanish. not kidding only about 35% of the students that started the class passed the class. Good Luck
Miguel is the man. Yes he does speak a lot of Spanish but he is very understandable and helpful. I love Spanish because of this guy. Take him and you'll learn the language.
super funny. He speaks mostly spanish during the class, which might seem hard, but you will eventually become a lot better at understanding spanish. He is a very hard grader. You must pay attention because he calls you out and will not stop hounding you until you say the right thing. i would recommend him. great teacher. super funny.
Im so glad I took Prof. Zapata again..but for 201! He makes it fun to learn spanish and is willing to help you,but you have to initiate your need for help. The structure of his exams are reasonable, and there's no trick questions. You just need to study n get a good grade. Oral presentations arne't hard, just be able to communicate to your peers.
He is soooo funny! i loved going to his class. He talks the entire time in spanish but it really helps you understand and practice more. He requires you to speack in spanish also. He's so awesome! take him!!
He teaches Spanish as it would appear in the real world. He brings up things that wouldn't get you made fun of or worse.
SUCH A GOOD TEACHER!!! He speaks in spanish for most of the class but take if you really want to learn the language. He's really funny and makes sure everyone in the class gets involved and gets the information down. He teaches you spanish that you would hear native speakers use. Even if you aren't interested in spanish he'll keep you entertained.
really mean, 90% of students struggled and he blamed them instead of his horrible teaching style. thinks this is mexico and people should know spanish, bitter because he failed english (he actually said this). gets mad when students dont speak with accents even though his accent is so thick you cant understand him. worst teacher ive ever had ever!
Omg!!prof Zapata is the best spanish teacher!! hes so funny, and the class is super fun!! I highly recommend him!! youll look forward to attending his class :)
Amazing teacher! He made Spanish fun and I learned a lot. Should attend or you fall behind. He knows a lot and wants you to do well. Best Spanish teacher I've had!
Amazing teacher! He made Spanish fun and I learned a lot. Should attend or you fall behind. He knows a lot and wants you to do well. Best Spanish teacher I've had!
Great teacher! Anyone who says he isn't probably didn't go to class or try. He always reviews whatever topic you're going over at the beginning of every class and he's really funny. He teaches you the spanish that you could actually use when you talk to native speakers. would definitely want to take another class from him.
This is a fun class, but he speaks a lot of Spanish. Puts you on the spot, which make the class very stressful at times. Always late, and is not organized (doesn't follow a schedule. I wouldn't recommend him. I took 2 years of Spanish in high school, but still failed Spanish 101.
This is a fun class, but he speaks a lot of Spanish. Puts you on the spot, which make the class very stressful at times. Always late, and is not organized (doesn't follow a schedule). I wouldn't recommend him. I took 2 years of Spanish in high school, but still failed Spanish 101.
OK he's a nice guy and he's funny. He's always late to class however. He's not super organized but you'll still learn. I feel like I learned a lot from him, but it never showed on the tests because the tests were ALWAYS way harder than the stuff he went over in class. His final is also cumulative... it's NOT easy.
He's a really great professor! Funny and teaches you spanish that actually makes sense when you talk to native speakers. If you didn't take 101 and 102 or do well in high school spanish, you shouldn't try taking 201 at all. The people who didn't like him are usually the ones that didn't go to class or study. Just go to class and pay attention.
i got an A on my oral presentation and actually participated in his lecture when everyone else would fill a seat and stare into space. tests were frustrating and confusing and he failed me. will not take his classes ever again avoid this nightmare, showed up and stressed this entire semester to be a complete waste of time super bummed.
The intro class is definately not intro, if you have never took a spanish class or are having a hard time with the language change out of his class now. He is a really funny and interesting guy but it is so hard to keep up. He speaks in spanish only, and the test are hard.
Sr. Zapata is an amazing teacher. His english is poor, which you would think would make this class harder, but he is very good at communicating with the class in both english and spanish- but mostly spanish. He is enthusiastic and hilarious. His examples are very helpful and you always learn something in class. Never boring and never a waste of tim
He is hands down the best spanish teacher i've ever had. I think this is the most spanish o've ever learned. He speaks spanish most of the time but he makes your you understand before he moves on. He is very funny and time in that class fly's by so fast. He calls on you in class so be prepared not scared because it helps your learn the language.
He really does put you on the spot during class, but it makes you learn. As long as you can get yourself to go to class and pay attention, you will do fine. He has an oral presentation at the end, but it's easy. Also, if you have any problems, he will go over them with you at his office hours. Study and it will pay off in this class.
He is such a good professor! I liked him a lot because he is funny, a naturally happy guy, and I learned way more in his Spanish class than in my last one. As long as you go to class, pay attention, and study for the tests, you should do well. You can't fail unless you don't do anything for this class. I recommend taking his class!
Awesome professor and very funny! Makes class interesting. Speaks in spanish the entire time, was more challenging for an intro class. Participate and go to every class, study, and you will do fine. Learn where to put accents because you will be doct on tests. I recommend his class you will learn a lot and enjoy it. Nice guy!
He is a very funny guy and keeps the class going but he speaks spanish most of the time and I find it hard for some students because in order to understand there should be some type of translation. He's hard on students and SWITCH out of his class if you have him if you aren't so 'advanced' with spanish because he isn't so helpful.
My favorite professor in foreign languages. Great times!
Zapata is a comedian. He is so funny and he really drills the Spanish language into your head. Don't worry about participating, he'll make sure you do. Recently ran into him at a bar, this guys great.
Hilarious!I can easily see him hanging out with my family.Makes class very intertaining. He is very willing to help his students. Very dedicated to your grade. NOT AN EASY A CLASS!!But well worth the effort with everything you get from this class.Pay attention & dont hesitate asking questions. he picks on students but it helps you grasp the concepts
He is so nice and so funny. It helps you in the class if you speak as much as you can, either in spanish or english. He likes you to answer questions and talk when he doesn't pick you. He is so fun and so funny and sometimes even made my day a little better =)
Really funny and spontaneous with his stories. Looked forward to his class every day. If he picks on you he likes you, even if he always puts ppl on the spot. Extra credit was eating at Latin restaurants!! Easy Class.
Dnt even feel bad if he picks on you!!!!!! Because he will untill u understand the material. Really Funny and entertaining. Makes you feel stupid at times but very easy class
Stay away from this professor if you want to learn! He does make the class fun but at the same time, you don't learn anything. Out of a class of 20 only 2 people are passing (those are freshmen out of high school) there are no C's or D's! The rest of the class had F's on the exams. He doesn't teaches, always 15 mins late and takes random attendances even when he states max 3 absences before he drops a letter grade in the final. Just because of him, everyone is taking the class over again.
I was extremely pleased with this class. I learned so much more and he was very encouraging and helpful. He makes class fun, but the tests can be challenging. Be sure to participate so he knows your skills and can help you more!
funny and interesting. acts like a hard grader but is fairly easy. if he sees that you try, then you will pass
He is so enthusiastic about what he teaches and he is funny and silly so i looked forward to attending class. He is a great professor, you will learn spanish in this class especially since he only speaks spanish and rarely speaks english. This is a hard class but he is very helpful so it shouldn't be a problem. There are also plenty of E.C
Very funny professor! He is great even though his english is a little hard to understand at times. I had him for two semesters and passed with a B on both. Pretty satisfied.
I really enjoyed his class, he takes the time to explain the concepts in depth. Really funny and makes you feel comfortable as long as you actually show you try your hardest. Would recommend him to anyone (:
Hands down one of the best professors ive had! Would definitely reccommend him to anyone who wants to learn but also get a good grade and have fun during the process. Super funny teacher. I looked forward to going to class. gets to know students on a personal level. He will boost ur grade if u always go to class and actually try to do well.
Zapata es un profesor ¡muy excelente! He is so funny! Best class ever! However, you still have to study and keep up because his tests are not easy; but, he is fair and teaches what you need to know. I was glad he taught the class in Spanish because it really helps with comprehension. I thought he was easy to understand and follow.
GREAT PROFESSOR! if he picks on you, don't feel embarrassed cause he wants you to learn and understand it. Hes really funny!! His examples in class are funny but they help when learning! If you miss one day, its like missing a week!
AVOID AT ALL COSTS! Shows up late, criticizes his students efforts, expects perfection on his open ended tests. Likely the worst professor I've had in my academic career.
Best professor ever! At first it is very frustrating because he only speaks spanish but after a week or two he gets really nice. The tests are pretty challenging but if you study you will be fine. He is always willing to help. He jokes around a lot making it a less stressful environment. I highly recommend this class!Im taking him again for 201
I'm not sure if he is exactly competent enough to be teaching this course. His punctuality is off and he is one harsh grader. His input is never constructive. Imagine taking this course in TJ because that's what its basically like.
Professor Zapata is challenging, but he is far from unreasonable. His exams are appropriate at the university level, and you have to study. If you really try and work hard, he will be there for you, but you will not get a grade for free. This is my last semester, and I am going to miss this class. He is a wonderful professor and my favorite ever.
He's really engaging and he really cares about this subject.
His tests are actually really fun. Get to know him, he's really an effective professor!
Great class and great guy. Must take!
The most articulate man in CSUSM
Zapata is a very hard grader, but a great professor! He spent countless hours helping me, and has hands down been my biggest inspiration as a non-native Spanish speaker. He took my less than average Spanish, and has helped me refine it to graduate level. Simple: If you do not try, he does not care if you pass or fail. Try, and he will recognize it.
Great teacher that really drills concepts into your head. Class isn't an easy A though, you definitely have to work for it. He gives extra credit opportunities. Attendance helps you because if you have a crappy grade and he sees you in class a lot, he'll do what he can to bring your grade up. Always says tests are "super facil" but really not.
The only hard thing about tests were the compositions. He's super funny and willing to help if you need it. he drills concepts into your head. Showing up to class can help your grade in the long run. He gives lots of opportunities for extra credit. The class is pretty easy.
As long as you show up and put in effort, he will do his best to help you understand the material if you are struggling. If Spanish isn't the best subject for you, his office hours will be your best friend. He genuinely cares about his students learning. He comes off as an intimidating professor, but that's just his personality.
Prof. Zapata is hilarious! I really enjoyed his class. The tests are somewhat difficult so you have to attend class and study before. He made the class very fun, and as long as you attend, do your work, and study for the tests you should be fine.
He is a terrible teacher. He expected you to speak spanish fluently and this is an intro to spanish class. If you don't speak spanish fluently do not take his class. I would not recommend you to take him unless you want a challenge.
I had always gotten As in both High School and College Spanish Classes until this class... Though he's "kinda" funny, his class is hard. Don't expect any multiple choice tests, it is all written. There will be pop quizzes. You will get homework every night, and it won't be from the book or online. I STRONGLY ADVICE YOU TAKE A DIFFERENT SPAN CLASS!!
He is a good teacher, but it is a tough class
Love Professor Zapata! He is very helpful and a fair grader. Tests are spot on to what we review, and he gives extra credit. The class is fun and laid back.
Professor Zapata is great. It's hard to get used to his class at first because 99% of the class is spoken in Spanish but I can guarantee you will finish this class having learned SO much, which is a plus for Spanish 201. Go to class, participate, and put in effort and he will pass you. Also, he secretly takes roll all semester long just saying.
He is one of the best instructors I've ever had in my life. His teaching style forces you to learn the material. He is always willing to offer any amount of extra help you need. He is also like stand up comic hilarious. It would be difficult not to enjoy his class. But don't be shy , because he calls on everyone. A lot.
Fresh out of 101? Take this class! Been a while since you've taken spanish? Pick an easier professor. Zapata cares about his students success but he will call on you EVERY DAY. Don't know the answer? He'll bang his head against the wall until you figure it out. He's funny, but can make you feel like an idiot at the same time.
If you do not have a solid Spanish basis (101) I would not recommend this professor. On the other hand, if you can learn Spanish well on your own without much instruction, then this is the class for you. Professor Zapata has a great sense of humor, but it does not substitute for poor teaching habits.
Miguel really changed my mind about the Spanish language. Before taking this class with him, I thought I would never learn Spanish and hated the language. Well, now I realize I just had bad professors before, because I finished his class with an "A" and have a new found respect for the language. 100% recommend this professor. Also hes super funny.
Hilarious and fun with awesome youthful approach. You have to speak and especially understand Spanish well to appreciate his classes. I love his fun stories during the class and the fact he only speaks Spanish during the class. Best Spanish professor I have had so far. Explains grammar very precisely Gracias Profi!
I really liked Professor Zapata because he genuinely cared about teaching you Spanish, and was very passionate about his students doing well. I would definitely recommend to take his class! It's not an easy "A", by any means but if you are willing to put in the work and show up to class you will do well!! Highly recommend!
Professor Zapata is such a kind and funny man. I took this course to brush up on my Spanish before moving on to 201 and it was a really good experience. Maybe because I'm already a native speaker, but it was very easy. Homework and tests are not bad at all. But he does speak full-on Spanish so get ready to pay attention.
I took Zapata for 102 and 201. Funniest spanish professor ever. He is respected and loved by his students. He's tough grader and challenging professor at times, but taking him is a rewarding experience. just don't skip class..
I took Zapata for 102 before so I was already familiar with his teaching style. He is so funny and it's not hard to devote all your attention to him because he's that type of professor that makes you want to be engaged in learning. I'm glad I fulfilled my LOTER with him. Exam every chapter, some quizzes and compositions. Plenty of time to prepare
Very nice and funny professor but I don't recommend unless you have a fairly strong Spanish vocabulary coming into class. He frequently used Spanish words that I had never heard before and I had taken Span101 the previous semester with a strong A grade. This was especially a problem on tests. Lots of composition on tests.
I took 3 years of Spanish in highschool, so I'm fine in this class, but I feel bad for the other students though. Zapata teaches Spanish 101 like it's an honors class. He is a bit challenging. I like him though. He's funny! "BOCA GRANDE!!!!" "FUERTE!!!"
I enjoyed this class so much! He is such a great teacher and makes the class really fun because he is hilarious! He also makes the class super interesting, so it is easy to stay engaged. He is very nice and understanding and really wants to see his students succeed. His class overall is not hard at all. Really recommend having him as a teacher.
I hadn't taken Spanish in over 6 years before taking this class as a Freshman this semester. I was worried at first, but turned out I had no reason to be. Yes, he does speak in Spanish 99% of the time even though it is a 101 level class. However, it's extremely easy to follow and understand his lessons through examples. Truly cares about students.
It had been two years since I had even come into contact with Spanish since high school and he makes this class seem super easy. This semester was a little rough due to him being sick and missing a week of instruction but we quickly got back up to speed. He does speak Spanish for the entire time but it truly is the only way to learn.
AMAZING professor! He speaks alot of spanish in class but easy to understand. He was sick for a week or two and missed class but made it up. Tests are all straightforward and easy. Tells hilarious and personal stories that tie into the lectures which makes it easy to stay engaged. If you can, take his class!!!
Unless your are fluent in spanish do not take this professor. You will end up teaching yourself. He doesn't care about you or your success in his class. Doesn't offer extra credit. Not much homework which is good but other than that bad teacher. I would not recommend him.
Really fun and awesome professor, I recommend brushing up on the basics before taking though as he does mostly speak in Spanish. People do bad because they think it'll be cake walk(I did). Its not, you need to study a bit for this one lol... For tests he requires correct accent marks and conjugation. Show up to class, he'll notice if you don't.
I love Zapata! He is so caring about everyone and if you need the extra help, go to his office hours and he will help you out! He is also superrrr funny which makes the class more fun. It can be scary at first because he barely speaks any English in the class, but you catch on fast and it is actually helpful! I would love to take his class again.
Easiest Spanish teacher you'll take. He's so understanding and hell work with you one on one if you need help. Super funny. Attendance not mandatory but if you don't understand Spanish then show up. No essays just about 4 test and some "pop quizzes" that he does. He gives out extra credit. Zapata wants you to pass the class so don't mess around
Zapata literally made me cry in my car after class on multiple occasions. He really seems like he does not care about the people struggling in his class. He also does not post grades on cougar courses and when I asked for a rundown of my grade he told me to go to his office but he wasn't there. I emailed him and have still yet to hear from him.
4 chapter tests, 1 group oral presentation, 1 written comprehension and your final exam. Attendance is not extremely necessary. Intimidating at first since he only speaks Spanish during class but he is very easy to understand. You will appreciate it because it forces you to learn. Willing to help all students, overall a very kind man.
For first year Spanish, very easy to follow along even though the course is primarily taught in Spanish. This class will adequately prepare you for the next course. He makes learning fun and tells funny stories. Only downside is the on-line homework, but if you get a head start you should be fine.
Zapata is absolutely amazing, he does speak Spanish most of the time but he makes it really easy. He doesnt make you do homework if youre doing well but he makes it extra credit if you do it all. Hes really nice, funny and cares about students. Just show up and take notes. EASY A!
During class he goes over random topics that may or may not be relative to the textbook material. He likes to make a lot of jokes that may go well with some and not other students. He does not have a standardized way of giving assignments which makes studying frustrating if you are new to Spanish. There are honestly better Spanish professors.
He only talks in Spanish and calls on people at random every class. Even though this class was stressful to go to everyday, it did teach you Spanish a lot faster than some other professors who are easier. The test are easy and straightforward. He is understanding if you have an unfortunate circumstance and will let you miss class because of it.
Professor Zapata is a really funny person and he only speaks in spanish. I actually learned spanish more because of him. Tests are self explanatory but he's really specific. You have to study for them. Isn't clear on online homework so no one knows whether or not to do them. Doesn't upload grades on cougar courses.
After one classes I can already tell he is not a good teacher for Spanish 101. He talked in Spanish 99% of the time. If you havent taken Spanish before avoid his class. He talks to the class like everyone has taken three years of Spanish in high school. Didn't translate any of what he said the whole day and expected me to understand and reply :(
I took 201 during the summer - class lasted 5 weeks. Hands down the best Spanish class I have taken. I learned more in this accelerated class than I had in any of my previous semester long Spanish courses. Prof. Zapata really takes the time to make sure you understand everything. He also is always available! Really nice guy
He is really hard to understand for Spanish. He speaks all Spanish during class. He expects you to know what he is saying during class time. Most of the people in the class failed the first exam. The Test are really hard unless you put a lot of effort into this class.
You will need to know Spanish before taking this class. He will randomly call on people during class. There was one oral presentation which you could do alone or in a group and you can't have speaking notes. He does notice if you skip class.
Most of the students that struggled in the class I took with him simply didn't care to really learn Spanish & that's the main reason they didn't like his class/didn't do well. I enjoyed his class very much & did well because I actively listened/participated. He's a super funny guy who's excited to teach if you're excited to learn! Don't miss out.
He doesn't post lecture notes nor send consistent reminders, so you need to attend class or ask someone what you missed. He typically only speaks Spanish during lecture but he will explain the information thoroughly afterwards. If you take notes and do the homework, he'll go over what you need to know in class for the exams, and you'll do fine.
Best Professor I have ever had. If you show up to his class, write down his notes, study and do your homework, you will get a good grade! He is lenient with homework and a very understanding person.
Amazing Professor. Hes funny and respectful. He makes the class fun but you have to pay attention and take notes because everything will be in the test.
Zapata is a really tough grader. The whole class is in spanish and if you aren't a native speaker it's really tough. He grades so hard and myself and my native speaking classmates typically scored C- or below on every test. Wouldn't take again, ended my 4.0 GPA
Did not know my grade the whole semester not a fan of that!!! Exams are important. He does give homework but it will not help your grade. Speaks spanish the whole time and will call on you to practice. Nice guy but study for the exam otherwise you will not pass. does not answer emails right away.
Funniest guy ever. Made Spanish fun for even those who dislike practicing it. He's an easy grader and clearly very caring. There is some homework but it's manageable.
Class was set up for student success, and if he finds out that you're trying, he meets you half-way. I'm good at Spanish, which I think contributed to my success, but he's still a good teacher. He's down to earth, and cares about a student's life. I'd recommend him to anyone.
