dropped it the first day he is very dry along with a dry subject = kill me now
If you speak english, sit up front so you can understand him. Another smart guy who cant teach. I don't know how some people have a knack for making someone hate school?? Take another professor for your own sanity and grade!!
Drop this instructor now! I was interested in Java programming and thought I could "tough it out" and tackle the subject with this prof. IT Minors BEWARE! Taking this class was the BIGGEST mistake of my life. Very hard exams, assignments, and quizes. Will not budge if your opinion differs. Very boring and tiring. Stay away. Far away.
Just to be clear I am a B avg student so if you find yourself there so far that this class is for you. He HELPS if you ask and look like your putting effort. I got an A- in the class by: 1, sitting in the front and 2, just paying attention. I do not read the book at all except for reference. Hes a great guy, it the class that's hard.
This guy has a hard accent, work is really hard. He doesn't care about you. Tells you to go see TA all the time.
He is hard to understand sometimes, but is a very fair teacher especially when it comes to the project. He lets you resubmit your project again and again to fix errors. If you ask for help, he will help. The class can be hard for some, but it's really not that bad. Effort Required. It's one of those classes where you really get out what you put in.
Very nice professor. Very helpful - answers emails very quickly! Very strict on having citations and having rights to use images for a research paper. Take him, he is a good professor. Offers a lot of bonus points. Ended with an A+ Just do the work and you will be fine.
Online. Do the work and you'll pass the class. You have to care about what you do and follow directions exactly. I ended up liking database after my experience with Boicu. I know I've annoyed him so much during the semester but he will still help with patience. Exams are laid out exactly from the homework. Project is kinda vague. Love him. :)
This was an online class. The lectures/notes aren't helpful at all. Not a great "teacher", but he is really helpful and will let you resubmit the project with his corrections over and over, and by doing that, you'll learn a lot about the subject. Book is required for homework for the second half of the semester.
Will help you if you ask. Can come off rude sometimes. His dry humor lightens up the mood of the class a little. Intimidating person at first. He seems like a bland and grumpy person but once you get to know him he is a more approachable and friendly.
Semester long group project without any structure or guidance. Useful learning resources were provided, but were never truly explained or enforced to be truly useful in the course. My group flopped, causing my course grade to take a hit. Offers loads of extra credit, which I used to save my grade. Awful, disorganized class with no direction.
Very helpful, can be difficult to understand at times but he is a nice guy and likes to help people succeed.
I took the alt learning section, taught by him & Dr. Rtyikova, don't recommend it unless you can teach yourself. This course isn't hard, I was just in a section where we did group work & didn't get much out of lectures. A LOT OF WORK (hw, projects, quizzes, projects, & test). But, so much Extra Credit in this course!! He was hard to understand.
I took the hybrid learning course that he teaches with Dr. Rytikova. Extremely confusing at explaining directions in class and it's a stressful class environment overall. Lots of work in this class (quizzes, hw, projects, etc.) Dr. Boicu is definitely helpful 1 on 1 in like office hours, but take another IT 214 professor if you can.
Tough grader. Always shouting through his microphone. He has a passion for databases but truly only helpful if you go in during his office hours. He will help and explain things clearly. In class, it was terrible. 2 midterms, a long project with 2 parts, 1 final, homework each week, bonus quizzes and a lot of group work. Stressful class environment
Difficult class, decent teacher. He gives out extra credit knowing they cover a lot of concepts in class. Exam One was about memorizing from a list of around 100-200 words, and drawing a diagram. Exam Two was purely about SQL which was much more reasonable. Final is about half and half of each, no diagram. HW and Xcred are grade boosters, DO THEM!
big class taught by both Ioulia Rytikova and Boicu, and they are very knowledgeable professors. Office hours definitely helps as he walks you through the answers very clearly.
He is passionate about database but can be confusing at times. It is hard to understand him but he definitely helps you out in terms of grades. He knows what he is doing but is ridiculous with his assignments and projects. They aren't hard but do take FOREVER to do and there is at least one per week. Please participate. He gives bonus points!
This past spring semester, the IT department changed the syllabus for IT214. Boicu made it near impossible to fail the class. He gave so many free points to make sure no one fails. The only downside is that there is a crazy load of homework on a week to week basis, but I did maybe half of them and still was fine in the class thanks to professor.
I took an online course during the summer that was 5 weeks long. There were many opportunities for extra credit, the assignments were not difficult, be sure to understand the homework, do the weekly quiz and discussion board post, Homework is easy but a lot of work, exams are very similar to the homework. Professor is helpful and grades well
Guy cannot teach well, once you get to SQL you gotta come up with your own code based on a criteria and can get super confusing. The project was held at the VERY END of the semester on top of the other hw we had to do. Not the best professor for this course.
this is the worst class ever.
In all honesty the amount of work given in this course every week if overwhelming. Furthermore, the TA's will take away a good amount of points of HW if you miss small things. You can expect quizzes every class, consisting of three parts and with a time limit. Extra Credit is given for participation and additional assignments (Highly recommended!)
he gives complicated assignments. Very inconsistent on what he say in class. He say one thing and end up doing something different the next. not a good professor. I won't recommend at all.
One of the worst professor i have ever seen on my life. He don't care about the student. He just read his power point. he looks very exhausted and stressed every day. He is a tough grader and it also depends on his mood. Guys don't take with him.
I took IT214 With him in Fall 2019. He gives quiz every week and every quiz look like final exam and there was time 30 min time limit. Most of the students could not finished even half of the question. And final exam is extremely hard, believe me you will definitely regret taking this course. I had SQL background and it was so hard for me.
He is not a good professor. I don't know how GMU can have this kind of professor. He don't deserve to be GMU professor. He think he knows everything but nobody understand his concept. He is very picky. I highly request you to NOT to take his classes or if you are taking drop it, otherwise you will regret.
Beware this is the most worst professor at mason. A complete nightmare. Take someone else. You been warned. Over complicates material and lies to students. I don't recommend him at all. Absolutely horrible for any other classes too.
he just lives in his own little world that nobody else can understand. His test questions are tricky (like he made them so only he could understand them) every test is like final and he'll refuse to answer questions about them.
Be sure you know all the material before coming in and doing the assignments and before the tests. I worked 5-10 hours weekly for this course because you were graded on every little thing that added up to your final grade. Other than that, the professor is good at explaining everything you need to know. Make sure you collaborate with your peers.
The class itself isn't too difficult. The way it is organized however, is another story. The teacher/TA grades extremely harsh and doesn't allow you to make up for it, even if it was a simple mistake.
this is the worst class so far
professor is disordered. You can not understand what he is saying. Makes it so complicated. Even if you try your best you will not be able to fulfill his requirements.
Don't take him. I TOLD YOU! You are left in the dark.
Professor Boicu was able to answer almost any question that I had while taking his course, and was able to give a response very quickly. This was the IT 194 bridge course so his mentality was that we would need to remember what was learned in the class that was taken before, so there was a bit of difficulty in the beginning.
No clear grading cannot understand what he is saying.
He teases students and forces them to fail. No clear instructions are given.
No idea of what he teaches. No clear instructions. Too much greedy in every aspect of his teaching.
He is a harsh grader and his assignments were so hard to understand even for someone with good knowledge in the database field. Also, he has trust issues, he made us use ZOOM video call on top of lockdown browser with camera. DO NOT BOTHER TAKING HIM IF YOU WANT GOOD GRADES OR EVEN JUST TO PASS THE CLASS! YOU WILL REGRET!
DON'T TAKE HIM. IF YOU CARE ABOUT YOUR GRADE TAKE SOMEONE ELSE. ONE OF THE HARDEST PROFESSOR I HAVE EVER HAD. HIS PLAN TO FAIL YOU. NO CLEAR INSTRUCTION. HE DOESN'T GIVE YOU ANY IDEA HOW TO DO IT. YOU HAVE TO FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTION LINE BY LINE; OTHERWISE, HE WILL COMPLAIN YOU CHEATED AND PUT YOU ON HONOR CODE VIOLATION. 6 PROJECT IN 1MONTH.
OMG, WHAT A NIGHTMARE! stay FAR AWAY from this professor for PEACEFUL life. Egoistic, trust issues. I felt like he enjoys giving tough time to students. Zoom + Webcam + Respondus (Are we thieves or criminals??) That's what I personally felt. Taunts during online lectures and were even told to drop class. His everything starts and ends at HONOR CODE.
He has no manner and does not respect students mason should change such professors.
Very inconsistent does not know how to speak can not understand makes students cry on purpose and has no feelings teaching quality is very poor I wish mason would realize this and get a better professor He also urges people to drop course even though it is the decision of the student to do so.
One of the worst professor what's so ever. I have never seen a rude professor like him. He will fail you for sure so if you sign up for this class it's on you. He doesn't know how teach student at all.
DON'T TAKE HIM AT ALL. Don't even think about it. I wasted my money and time for nothing. I didn't lean anything. He doesn't care about anyone. His main purpose is to fail students.
DON'T TAKE HIM!!! TAKE someone else. Don't waste your money
DON'T DO IT!!!!! I'M WARNING YOU!!
WARNING run away as fast as you can.
No doubt he has knowledge, skills, and a doctorate degree. BUT, if you don't know how to teach then all these things are useless for a student. He needs to change his approach and GMU administration should PLEASE take this into consideration. Students are asked to evaluate him before final exam, it should be after the final exam. Disappointed !!!
I hope GMU admin reads the rate my professor especially for this professor and they should take action he has no teaching skills and does not know how to build a relationship with a student or that student teaching and learning connection so awful highly dissatisfied i hope something is done we students are helpless.
WARNING, run as fast as you can. He is the worse.
Now no matter what professor you take you will end up with this professor. He does not know how to teach i am very confused.
He is just like Donald Trump Always saying something and the reality is something else he is a dictator.
The new curriculum is extremely confusing and very assignment heavy. Each week expect to do a 1500+ word assignment that you'll be happy with a 25% on. The grading is extremely harsh and does not explain your errors so that the next assignment you'll make the same mistakes again and get another 25%. 0/10 would not recommend until course is changed
TERRIBLE! I've never seen a worst professor in my whole life. You can't even understand his recorded lectures(Sadly students in all sections have to listen to them as he is the course coordinator). I can't even ask you to take some other professor for 214 because no matter which professor you take he controls the course like a dictator!
Where do I even start... first of all, you have to teach yourself everything in this course. In addition to that, homework instructions are confusing. You'll be lucky to even get a C+ on the homework. The TA's grading is strict. expects you to understand unclear directions. Professor said you aren't even allowed to ask him to check ur HW
His assignments are riddled with mistakes and unclear instructions followed by inefficient lectures that offer limited help when trying his assignments. The textbooks contains lots of errors in the code which he fails to realize unless someone in the class points it out. Would recommend picking another professor. Definitely avoid his online class.
AVOID TAKING HIM!!!!!!! He makes us look at his videos and provides examples of what to do, but when submitting it, I would always receive bad grades. I have a GPA of 3.9 so I know it's not me doing bad in the class, he just is a SUPER tough grader, and he's very strict on what to expect. I currently have a C and am trying my best to finish.
Worst professor on planet earth. If you have a choice to take another professor, do it. I hope the structure of this class reflects the structure of his life. Terrible and miserable.
Don't take any class with this person. He is terrible at teaching and an even worse person. You are most likely going to fail his class because of the way he and his TA grades the assignments. He is prejudiced, indifferent, and condescending. He will tell you to drop the class if you ask him questions As he told my classmate on the summer IT 194.
Dr. Boicu gets bad reviews from the undergrad class because those ones cover a wide array. In a class which has a narrower scope, he is excellent. He gives bonus point each week for participating in the lectures. I had a low B before participation extra credit and 101/100 after. Take him for every high level course you can
DO NOT TAKE HIM AT ALL COSTS!!!!!!!! WILL RUIN YOUR GPA
I took this with another teacher but Prof. Boicu fully control everything because he is the coordinator of this department. In beginning of the class, every week has a homework and it takes lot of time but easy. Then, last half the semester, he makes all homework as multiple choices, true-false and fill in the gap etc. there are lot of extra credit
This professor is not good at all if you really want to learn databases.
This professor is the coordinator of IT 214 so no matter what professor you take, its pretty much under his instructions. This is probably one of most unorganized online class structure Ive ever seen. The instructions for Assignments/projects are very vague and the quizzes have errors that make it very easy for you to get it wrong.
Professor Boicu seems like a really kind professor who is willing to go out of his way to help you understand the content; however, be mindful of the design assignments. For some reason, it was not made clear that students need to understand how to create an entity in MYSQL prior to starting the design assignments. Try your best to meet deadlines.
Make sure to attend his lectures, they will really help! He gives out bonus points so look out for those! Ignore the bad reviews, if you pay attention and ask for help, you will get an A. The final test was easy, if you do well on the guided assignments and cumulative tests you will easily get an A as all questions come from there.
No matter what proffeser you take it will always be his course. All you can do is just get through it and never look back.
Avoid him if you want to stay in IT. No sympathy. Demeaning tone. No curve. All his work is littered with mistakes. Its so many, and he wants u to explain every small error with like screenshots and everything tbh it won't even be worth it. Trust me, AVOID. His vids are no help. Cuts points for literally not capitalizing. BB auto grades wrong RUN!
Class structure absolutely sucks. He is the coordinator so no matter which prof you have they all have to follow his format. So much work every week with awkwardly phrased questions on tests and quizzes. takes points off for syntax. This class is just memorizing same questions to pass. Get as many points possible on easy stuff BC the final is hard
I didn't have him specifically but he is the reason IT214 sucks so I wanted to rate him. He coordinates the class and even though it is a flipped classroom (100% of the work is online), going to class is a waste of 3 hours. Took 30 screenshots of a file only to send the file in. He thinks we cheat so created a class where it is ALL memorization.
Completely out of touch with his students and puts more work into making students don't cheat instead of actually teaching the material and helping students. Avoid at all costs.
He puts in more work into making sure students don't cheat, rather than helping us learn and teaching the content. Taking 25-30 pointless screenshots of an assignment, and initialing our initials on every line. I got a 0 on an assignment for just missing an initial on a line. It doesn't matter which prof you take, IT214 is controlled by him.
This class is unnecessary difficult because of professor Boicu. Lots of assignments, projects, and quizzes. He made this class extra difficult because he has trust issues, and thinks everyone is cheating. He makes none sense requirements such as putting initials after every entity or attributes and 10 screenshots for a single assignment.
was not my prof but he's the course coordinator so all the work is designed by him, just want to ask thus guy who betrayed him? not a single assignment that did not require lockdown browser. focus on actually teaching the course than making sure people don't cheat
it 214 is one of the worst structured classes ive ever taken how does this guy still have job
IT 214 is the WORST course I've ever taken in college. How does this guy still have a job? His course is completely incomprehensible. I'm trying very hard not to use curse words here. We aren't cheating, so stop designing the course like we're inmates. You don't need the lockdown browser for ALL THREE QUIZZES every week! You need to be fired.
I spent more time taking dozens of screenshots than doing the actual implementation assignments. Having to sign almost every line of code with my initials, all for 1% of my grade for each one, was not only a waste of time, but very childish. If people cheat, they cheat themselves out of an education, but why make every other student suffer?
Overall I can understand why many people did not like this professor. Me personally, the material was there so I taught myself the majority of the class. As long as you focus on getting through the material and taking the quizzes, you will get through the class just fine. Reach out and he provides good explanation.
The structure for this class is absolute trash and it is the same no matter who you take, but this professor is really kind. I suggest starting off strong because I personally struggled with the SQL unit. Same final exam questions as quizzes throughout the semester. Do the final practice final exam as many times as you can!
Class itself is not difficult but be prepared to be taking upwards of 10-20 screenshots per assignment. It takes longer to organize the final report than to do the actual assignments. Lockdown browser is used for every quiz, yet not even a webcam which just makes it annoying for almost no purpose to retake the quizzes.
Did not have this prof, but this course is designed so terribly. You have to use lockdown on every hw assignment, which honestly discourages practicing and learning. I spent at least 8 hours a week on this class minimum.
This class is terribly designed and causes unnecessary amounts of stress. While Prof Boicu was not my professor, he is the it214 course coordinator and no matter who you take it with, it is the same structure. If you need help, too bad - TAs and professors hardly respond to emails. Avoid this class at all costs.
Not really the professor, but is the course coordinator for the courses on campus. I am going to admit, regardless of what professor you choose for IT214, chances are, all the coursework is provided by this man right here. There are on average 7-10 assignments. Also online exams require 2 devices for a proctor which makes sense, but its overkill.
Be ready to use a lockdown browser at least 3 times every week. Make sure to "sign" every single line of code with your initials to make sure you're not cheating. Lastly, be prepared to use TWO cameras for the final. This professor has serious trust issues. Do not take this online class!!!!
I am absolutely baffled that Boicu still has a job. I'm sorry you have to take this class.
I'd rather not give this professor a bad review, but it's tough to like this professor and how he structures his class. I understand that online summer classes are challenging, which I'm fully aware of; however, the way he teaches is very ponderous, and the way he teaches seems like he just woke up from a 16-hour nap.
For AIT502, The homework is almost impossibly lengthy. Say goodbye to your free time. Dr. Boicu's lectures are very difficult to hear properly and we cannot ask him questions or troubleshoot. Instead an instructor/TA preside over the class who also don't have the time to help or teach, they can barely get through the grading. It's not feasible...
It's surprising that a poorly rated professor continues teaching such an important course at GMU. His teaching style lacks value, burdening students with pointless assignments. If you are in AIT, I am sorry you have to take this course and face this person as an instructor. I think he uses students' data for his research without proper consent.
IT 214 is a terribly designed course. Every week there's an assignment, 2 long quizzes, and a test, all on lockdown.214 is required for IT majors, but he makes the course unbearable and extremely difficult for no reason since he is the course coordinator. There is no reason to give out as much work as he does, and there is a cumulative final.
Boicu is the reason IT 214 is as terrible as it is. Regardless of whoever you take this class with it will be painful because of how he designed this course.
not my professor but the coordinator of the overall course. what in the world. it's a level 200 class, why is it so abysmally designed and ridiculously difficult? seriously, who let him be the coordinator?
Absurd amount of homework, and all the learning content is old and probably legacy. Most students taking IT214 learn nothing due to the sheer amount of work that they have to cram in their heads to complete. Course requirements and content needs to be completely redone by someone who knows how to teach a student.
probably one of the worst professors at George Mason University right now. If your taking 214 and expecting to actually learn something think again.
His learning content is horribly structured and the quizzes test you more on syntax/diction than the actual module concepts. Im not one to criticize people's grammar and english too but he could structure his assessment questions better.
Unfortunately somehow has control over the format and material for multiple AIT classes including 512 and 681. Horrible material to learn from, horrible quizzes which don't tell you what you got wrong, horrible worded questions, mostly regurgitating material rather than learning anything. Especially in 512 where you just have to exact syntax. 0/10
Oh MY GOD! I have never given any bad review for any professor here, but this professor is to the extreme. I don't even know who did him wrong. As professor he supposed to care and help but unfortunately he makes things as hard as he can. Very harsh grader, all the other professors and TA have to do what he says because he is also a coordinator....
I really enjoyed this course. While it can be challenging at times, the professor's clear guidelines and detailed rubrics made it manageable. The grading criteria were transparent throughout. I was hospitalized mid-semester, and the professor was very understanding and generous in granting me enough extra time to complete the assignments and tests.
He is making things worse and the points getting is extremely strict.
This professor was very helpful and communicated well.
Professor Boicu was an incredible professor, the lectures were very engaging and he always promoted diverse perspectives. He incentivized classroom attendance and participation. The workload was intense at times, but most of the work was manageable. Overall I would highly recommend him as he will teach you well and create an enjoyable semester.
This professor reuses questions across quizzes and the final exam. These questions are unintuitive and structured in such a way that the only way to get them right it to memorize the order and style in which the professor wants the question to be answered.
