He knows his stuff but as a professor he sucks. Really boring and his exam questions too vague. His questions preety much ask you to describe so and so. Which could mean writing down the whole lecture and then he takes points off if you miss out one little thing. Doesnt speak or write english very well. Dont take him.
This guy has to be one of the better professors I've had. Note: The subject itself is very tough and detail oriented. Very friendly and clear, will answer your questions (just bother to ask). Exams REQUIRE you to know what you are talking about, they are essay (no wussy multiple choice). Very interesting.
Vesenen is an awsome professor. Yes his lectures are long and the fact that their at night does not make it easy to stay awake. However, his powerpoint notes are the best outline for the book. To get an A in this class you have to basically write out essays before-hand and hope they are on the test (which they always are he gives you an idea)
At first he tries to scare you by saying that he will throw you out of the class if you fail the first exam... however, he is very informative and helpful. Exams are essay based. He may seem tough, but he reallt just wants us to learn something.
He does not follow the curriculum. He will read slides to you, tell you that an exam is multiple choice and then give essays instead. Please be warned,he will not practice what he preaches and will fail you at the drop of a dime.I have a 4.0 GPA and EVEN I don't like him.No email, phone number or office hours.Half the class failed.D+ average
he is honestly the worst professor i have ever come across in my 16 years of schooling. horrible. im not trying to convince anyone, but the fact is you should really stay clear of him if you can. ur more likely to fail than pass.
Horrible. Extermely horrible. If you want to drop your GPA then definitely take him. He was the worst experience of my life. He is very rude and never answer your questions.
This may be the worst professor at Queens college. Although I passed, I felt he did it just so that he would fulfill a quota. Why? EVERYONE failed the midterm. He threatens students too! I'm not bad mouthing him, see for yourself! Anyone agree? Please post!
He is very deceptive. Please be careful. You will not get the grade you deserve or studied for.
He is a very smart professor but doesn't help you. You can know the info cold but at the time of the test you have to mention every detail in the essay in order to get a good grade in the class and tat doesnt always work. dont take his class.
Classes are boring and sometimes hard to follow. Exams are essay format but he hints so many times on what will be on it, so theyre not at all unpredictable. Easy A if you study and KNOW the stuff, dont just memorize, understand it. He usually just asks you to know the basics.
Professor Vesenen is awesome i dont know what most are complaining. The only key is to know how to study for his tests, other than that its not a difficult. I took both micro and immuno with him and got A, A+. He tells you whats going to be on the test so all you gotta do is focus on every single detail and throw all that info on the test.
He's a really cool professor. Somewhat scary at first, but very cool. The course material is extremely demanding but very interesting. Class is long and sometimes it's hard to focus for 3 hrs, but overall, the class is worth the effort.
His lectures are very boring! Half the class falls asleep while he just reads off from the slides. His tests are based on essays so it takes A LOT of studying to know every little bit of detail. He gives 6 questions, one of which you have to answer, two of which you choose, and one extra credit. Too bad he is the only professor for this class.
I took Vesanen in the summer and I really thought that it was going to be really tough (considering the fact that I suck at science but needed the class for the LASAR req.). There seemed to be so much reading and the outlines were so long! However, the exams were actually not bad at all. It didn't seem to require crazy indepth detail. Just know the
In the beginning, I feared Prof. Vesanen would be hard, but he tends to just scare all the students in the beginning. He gives two exams-both are essay format. You have to study well for those exams and know the material. He gives hints about the essay questions and in the end he uses the same questions from last semester! so fear not! just study.
Horrible professor, extremely rude, doesnt make time for his students. His exams are ridiculous. Essays are okay for anatomy (i got an A in that class) but for microbio?? gimme a break. how the hell are you supposed to differentiate in essay form the different microbes? its ridiculous. and completely useless. i love biology, but i hated this class
This professor is the worst I have had...he is no help at all. The exams are essay format...come on how can u write an essay on bacterias are u kiding mee!!! He says the only way for us to learn is if we write essays on all the information he gives us throughout the semester..hes crazzy!! No one can learn like that...the only thing we are doing i
He is very difficult, and unwilling to comprimise his teaching methods, which are awful.his expectation of a full time student taking other classes is immpossible.. maybe if i were taking only his class and had no life.....
Took in the summer;required for FNES. U must look at his mouth to understand him.Knowledgable but no help Some people only studied slides and able to get passing grades which might have worked out better for me.He gives NO OUTLINE!But sometimes gave?4quizes in lect.If were not for high 80's in Lab; might have failed.lab prof.Edlira, she's the best!
This is the Worst Professor I had on my life. He dosen't responde to emails.
Would be nice if this guy would curve a bit or drop a test. He expects students to study 2 hours a day everyday. You need to do to this pass. I passed and i can move on, and i am a major which needs a C or better. So it's doable, just study a lot. If you want a great grade study your ass off from day one and don't stop until the day of the final!
Best class I have taken with him yet! Always clear, always entertaining... hard exams, but be ready to learn a lot... those who truly love biology will appreciate the knowledge that he can share : )
I was terrified to take him, especially 'cause i took the class in the summer (3 week course). To my surprise, it wasn't only not bad,it was the best class ever!!! His teaching methods are great!you have to study hard, but if you pay attention in class, you'll pass 'cause he goes over the material over and over. Plus he's kinda funny!
This prof. isn't as bad as the other reviews say- out of a 10 i would give him a 6, you have to memorize the slides and take the testing yourself quest. in the txt book- i didnt even bother doing the readings and got in the 90's on his exams...not as bad as i thought
he's the best i ever had . I took 3 classes with him and he is the best A, A+ A+ . All you need to do is study hard...
haha he does wear the same clothes every day. red polo and track or sweat pants. he's a great lab professor but crappy when in the lecture hall. he's a nice guy but that won't help get you good grades. he's from Finland and his Finnish accent is hard to understand from the echo in the lecture hall.
just study ur head off....material is way too much and u need a lot of time. just study from slides. hes ok but soooooooooooo boring in lec better in lab. i wish he would make life a bit easier but i guess not
STAYYYY AWAYYYYY!!!! He's the worst! I'm warning you
I read these comments before taking him so my expectations were low but really he just has an old fashioned method and i liked him. He's also kinda **** towards the ladies... and he may sound rude but thats just normal...
two exams. He wants you to memorize every protein, function, cycle, epidemiology, pathogenesis, manifestations, and more for 15 different viruses and then write essays on four randomly picked from the 15 for the midterm and final. He doesn't want to teach and tells students not to contact him from day one.
I heard he was hard but I took him summer '10 and he was awesome. I got an A, he was very helpful. The class was difficult but that's why its called college people! Stop being lazy. Prof. Vesanen knows his stuff and I could tell he had a great respect for science and the human body.
Great Professor!! Definitely lots of work and be prepared to study hard. Exams straight forward! If you study everyday a little bit, you'll be fine!
I feel like no matter how much time and effort I put into this class, it's just so difficult. This is a bio 11 course, and I feel like a review is needed before the exam. I feel like the professor is extremely difficult. So much memorization, with very little time. A lot to study, and he is very intense.
One of the worst prof. EVER!will show the actual exam a day before of the exam so he can say he did a review.Tons to study!he thinks we are all pre-med and wants students to MEMORIZE EVERYTHING!I studied hard, did all the lectures and labs ans still expecting a C.Take anyother prof. don;t take him if you care about your GPA.
Took him this summer. It's BIO, what do u expect? A lot of memorization. Overall, its not hard. Your grade is based on 5 exams, 3 lecture and 2 lab. No labs to submit. It doesn't get any better than that. You cant just expect to attend class and get an easy A. study, pay attention, and ull be fine
this prof. is the worse prof. ever.
Great professor, really passionate about the material he teaches. Grade is 3 essay based tests that are averaged together. He really expects ALOT of detail in the responses. You must understand the material inside-out! Definitely possible to do well, but you have to study! Take good notes, and read the textbook-it's really well written.
Study his ppt slides know them inside out don't bother reading the textbook and you'll get an A+
Very helpful. Lecture is 3 exams made up of about 50 multiple choice, essays, sometimes slide ?'s & short answer. Lab is 3 exams based on answering questions off slides. 100-200 questions for lab exams. A lot of material, know the slides inside and out, no textbook needed. Very dense material. Gives some extra credit. I did very very well.
as an A+ student with a 4.0 GPA in my last semester, i didnt expect to receive a C in this class. this guy is a GPA destroyer. Prof. takes off points if he doesnt like you and he wont let you argue why you think you were right. avoid at all costs
Prof Vesanen wants you to acquire descent knowledge on viruses. Write your essays every week and study them. His exams are essay format. Learn the most common viruses inside out and leave the least common as your reserve for the extra credits.
prof. vesanen knows his stuff and wants you to know it as well. hes very helpful. i took in summer 13 and the 3 weeks flew by. there 6 total quizes, 3 lab and 3 lecture. lecture are 50 multiple choice and lab is pretty easy if you study his powerpoint slides and it is simple , arrow points to a bone and you name it. no need for the book
I really liked Dr. Vesanen, he explains everything until you understand. The only problem is the class and the amount of info we are required to know. IT IS A LOT!! You really have to dedicate your time on the subject and study hard
As a college student you are paying for the opportunity to learn, not for a grade. All you have to do is memorize slides to get an A. One of the best professors I've had. Really enjoyed coming to lecture. Anyone complaining about having to have to study for a college level course should consider an alternative route in life.
easy class if you study the material. 3 essay-format exams that your course grade will consist of. he tells you what kinds of questions he will possibly ask, and even shows examples from previous years. if you have any interest in this subject, you will learn a lot from him.
Great class. Amazing professor. Even though the course material is very dense, you will leave the class with perfect knowledge if you choose to study. The essay question might seem scary, but it actually helps to get a higher grade. My advice, know everything on the slides and read the textbook for clarification.
While in QC i had the pleasure to take Immunology, Virology and Microbiology with him. Yes, his lectures are long and dense and yes there is quite a lot of material to learn for his 3-4 essay question exams. Key to get A's is to organize all main information into a couple of essays and just memorize them. Incredible lecturer, made 3 hrs go by fast
The worst professor in the QC bio department. He thinks that we're going to med school or bio majors. This class is nothing more than a good for nothing requirement for the college. I took this class in summer 2012. It's in only F in my transcript. NEVER TAKE HIM unless that you want to work extra hard, and probably fail because he helps no one.
The class was as expected. This is a 300 level course that covers a lot of material. Dr. Vesanen's slides are detailed and clear, his expectations are straightforward, and his tests are fair. He is a phenomenal lab instructor. He makes lab fun and drills the material into your head. Take him if you want to learn something and will put in the time.
Very intimidating and can be rough around the edges, but hes actually a nice guy and a tremendous teacher. However if you can handle his demanding style dont take his courses.
Very knowledgeable professor. May be intimidating because he has a loud voice, but he genuinely wants his students to pass. He has a great sense of humor and is very nice. Will ingrain materials into your brain. There is no easy A for biology courses so STUDY STUDY STUDY . Also he does not accept tardiness!!!
When I took this class, I knew it wasn't going to be easy. Basically, there were 6 exams: 3 lab and 3 lecture. My advise to anyone is to study a lot because this professor covers a lot of material. He is very strict with attendance, so make sure you show up to class on time. If you slack off with him, you will not pass this class.
I'm not sure why students like his lectures. I felt they were very rushed and unclear. His multiple choice questions were fair but he's a very harsh grader on the essays. Not easy to get full credit at all, even if you've studied everything inside and out.
Dr Vesanen is a very smart individual. However this course has A LOT of material. He emphasizes the need to KNOW everything; and that means verbatim! His test are difficult because they are essay heavy and you will have no concept of what he will ask. Poor feedback, unclear grading criteria. The lab portion is tough. Prepare for a rude awakening.
every exam consists of essay questions. He grades them tough. He doesn't tell u what he expects before the exam. After he gives exams back, he tells how he graded them, which is not helpful. The lab is taking a whole different class. Total5 exams (2 lab & 3 lec) & 1 presentation. He will stop u in every sentence of ur presentation & ask questions.
If you are doing pre-health major, don't bother to take him and ruin your GPA. This class is unclear and expects a lot from you. If he does not like you, he will not give you good grade for the essay.
I made the mistake of taking him without regarding his reviews. I regret my whole college career now. He makes the content way harder then it has to be and sets all students up for failure. He also will not help you during office hours. He screams a lot at the students when we ask even the most neccesary questions. Do yourself a favor and r u n
This class is the only class I have failed in three years. He tells you that he doesn't care about your other classes and expects you to memorize everything and spell everything correctly. His lab is like a separate class altogether. He likes to yell and to put you on the spot in lab. I wish I never took his class. He will ruin your GPA.
Disorganized slides makes changes while lecturing. no effort to motivate students cant handle people being late. why know all the info when you cant even teach it to students?
He has to be one of the worst professors at Queens College. He is very condescending, arrogant, and intimidating. He grades lab exams by basically attempting to find any minuscule error to lower your grade anyway possible. If you spell one word a letter off on a lab exam, he will mark the whole answer wrong. I wish I can give him a 0 on this.
He is one of well known hardest professor in QC. In Bio 366(immunity), he speaks very fast, and the material is very new for most of the student. So, it is not easy to make notes and catch him immediately. His PPT is not from only the chapter he list in syllabus. Exam are essay questions, 50 pts each. no choice make mistake.
YES he is a solid choice, IF and only IF you take his courses as seriously as he does (i think this is a good quality he has as a professor). No I will not be taking him again. Reason: I am not insane. Advice: there is a textbook, read it before the sun comes up and if u can when the sun goes down. You will know u r ready if u can defend ur essay.
He is great professor. Very passionate and informative. He doesnt expect anything less. I took him for immunology, cancer bio and virology. I wish he offer more graduate courses because I learned so much in his classes. He is very inspiring. Study his PowerPoints and read the text, it is so rewarding to do well in his advanced courses.
Hes not very nice, he screams a lot and seems to enjoy intimidating people and being above them. His exams dont really follow his lectures and he makes the subject harder than it is. No chance you can take this class and work, lab teach was cool but I felt like I wasnt really learning, just craming for the sake of a good grade. Dont take him.
he actually is a great professor, very intimidating but worth it
Of all my years of college, he's one of the worst professors I've ever had. He's very difficult in grading for summer Anatomy and Physiology I, and his exams are extremely difficult. He is also very intimidating and unapproachable, which makes it even more difficult to seek out help. Be prepared to spend all your free time studying for this course.
You literally need to know absolutely everything he teaches you. His tests are essay based. What helped me tremendously was going over his lectures every week along with the textbook&then condensing that lectureiting an essay. It is A LOT of work doing that each week, but if you put in the effort you will definitely succeed in his class.
This course was more difficult since I took it in the summer. Having this class online due to COVID19 made it even more difficult to learn. Studying everyday is a must! Professor Vesanen was not my favorite professor at QC. He didn't explain his slides with great detail and rushed to get through the lecture. The textbook is VERY HELPFUL; BUY IT!
AVOID AT ALL COSTS, He is rude, not helpful and only sees things 1 way
This man can set you up for failure. Very rude. His exams dont match the common format of a normal AP class. Getting an A is impossible. He is unfair and not understanding. Believes students only want to cheat so he creates an exam full of medical diagnosis questions for an exam.
Avoid as much as you can. Inconsiderate and makes questions that is impossible to answer within the limited time. Worst professor I have ever known.
Dr. Vesanen is passionate about his courses! I've taken him for Bio 325, 326, 366, 368, and 369. He's rude at times but it's because he cares and wants you to have discipline. His classes are for those who WANT to work hard with a LOT OF TIME to memorize all the essays! Take Bio 40/41 if you're scared, he only teaches for the major league students!
DO NOT take A&P1 with this professor. He is extremely RUDE and GHETTO and he screams at you for even asking the most simplest questions. His exams are difficult and he takes off points even if you are one letter off. I took his course because it was only 4 weeks but big mistake! Just take that 6-8 wk summer class. Listen to the reviews. AVOID!
Professor Vesanen is very rude and disrespectful. He doesn't care about his students and he's a hard grader. He makes being a bio major harder than it is as he teaches most of the upper 300 level bio classes. E permit your classes if you can. RUN!!
Extremely rude. I understand he wants to scare us into working/studying harder but the way the professor comes off is intimidating. The workload is so bad you really can't focus on any other class. TAKE THIS CLASS BY ITS SELF if you really wanna do well. Honestly dont stress urself tho, go epermit it bc only this professor teaches it. Save ur GPA!!
This consists of 3 lab exams and 3 lecture exams including the finals. His lab exams very consisted of over 200 questions and memorization is key. This class is one you take if you are not taking other classes bc it'll stress you out so much, I cried everyday bc of this class. It's stressful, so take if you are prepared for his attitude too.
This course is not for the faint-hearted. Dr. Vesanen tells you exactly what he expects on day 1. Memorization is KEY. You NEED to put in the time and work to memorize his slides and pictures. He is very mixy, you never know when he's in a calm mood or when he'll bark at you. He's very knowledgable though. Only taking again because I must.
Take it if you have a good memory. His lectures are usually more than 100 slides and he expects everything to be memorized. Your grade is just based on exams. 3 lecture exams and 2 lab exams and a presentation for the final lab exam. I cried over his class every day. He can be sweet to certain people but is very tough and angry at times. Good luck
I took him for Bio 369 and 366. He has a bad reputation but he isn't a bad teacher. He tests are essays and he wants you to know the concepts and the important details in them like mechanisms, important proteins, etc. Show up to every lecture he hates students showing up to office hours and asking questions about things he went over in lecture.
Lecture grade 50% (3 lecture exams) and lab grade 50 % (2 lab exams and presentation), no extra credit, and no curve, that's it. Make sure to listen when he emphasizes content because it may be your essay question on exams. Don't be afraid, he can come off as mean but (looking past it) really, he wants to you do well. Very knowledgeable.
His exams are unnecessarily difficult for the bio40 level and aren't fully reflective of the slides despite him telling you so. Lectures were a waste of time as he would barely elaborate on or at the very least finish explaining everything on the slides. In contrast, I had a different lab professor who really helped me ace the lab portion.
The rudest guy ever. He seems like he is upset at his whole life. I would say a lot more but im stopping myself. Just try to avoid him
I'm extremely disappointed with this school and this professor. Mika is outright rude and disrespectful and offers no guidance whatsoever to ensure that you are successful in the course. Although I do love the content, his hostile demeanor made it difficult to focus or retain any information. Avoid this professor and school!!!
Dr. Vesanen is very strict. STUDY & do not wait for last minute. He really tests that you know the stuff by asking essay questions that are worth 20-50 points. Attenbdance is not required for lecture BUT do not miss lecture because he emphasizes what potential essay questions might be. KNOW all potential essay questions!!
If you want to do well, take this class by itself. This is a tough course. The final exam was an 80-point essay question and some anatomy images. While lecture attendance is not required I HIGHLY recommend going to get a guide on where to focus your study. Dr. Vesanen may come off rude and has his mood swings but he cares.
Doesn't even know anatomy, claimed encephalitis was "infection" of the brain. I got it on recording and sent it to the Dean, and they tried to downplay it. Graduated near 4.00 in chem but got F's on his exams even with above average MC correct- doesnt make sense. Very scary situation. I got out as fast as I could and graduated magna cum laude.
Ehh. Likes to act intimidating, but I don't care. Not accessible outside class. Pretty hostile demeanor but occasionally jokes. If you can take this class somewhere else, DO IT. If not, take this class BY ITSELF. I did. He cuts you off when you ask questions. However, exams were undoubtedly very fair. No curve. I would take him again.
Very rude, even the nice reviews here realize that. Unhelpful, does not answer questions. This was my 2nd time taking A&P & he was honestly just as bad as my first prof, this school has a huge issue with their science dept. Take this class elsewhere, I couldn't pass here but then easily got an A somewhere else. Run. Avoid. Run. E-permit, anything.
one of the toughest I've taken, and not just because of the material. The professor's voice was difficult to understand, often mumbling, which made it hard to keep up with already complex concepts. When students asked questions, he would frequently cut them off without fully explaining, which left many of us struggling to get clarity.
The exams were very challenging. The midterm, was based on a single, high-stakes essay question where you had to fill several pages. This made it nearly impossible to succeed unless you could answer that one question perfectly, regardless of how much you studied other topics. It felt more like a test of luck than an assessment of our knowledge.
I faced a personal crisis when my father almost passed away. Hoping for some understanding, his reply was strange. He said he didn't want to hear about it, this left me feeling dismissed and unsupported during a very hard time. I know there's policies to stick to, but a little empathy can make a big difference, especially during a difficult time.
Rude, dismissive, and hard to understand. The professor cuts off students mid-question, gets visibly annoyed when we ask for clarification, and seems to have an ego issue. Doesn't create a welcoming environment for learning, making this tough subject even harder. Avoid if you want supportive guidance or a passing grade at all...
Avoid if possible. Doesn't present a welcoming environment for the students and can be rude to the students. Grades very harshly and expects a lot of information in ONE essay question. Sends old class recordings and cancels class but expects us to know every detail or you won't pass the class. The class is already hard but he makes it harder.
VERY RUDE! Never listens, cuts off, gets annoyed, yells at students, intimidating, unprofessional, egoistic. Worst type of person I've ever met in my entire life, and the most stressful experience I've ever had. Teaching/guiding is not his job. He should be fired. I wanna go back in time so bad and stop me from choosing this school & professor.
study the slides and the notes very well. do not just know them but make sure to understand and comprehend it so that when the exam comes, you will be able to conceptually answer it. exam is pretty fair if you understand the material and can apply it in real life situations and in other contexts bc thats how his exams were. 50 mc, no ec :(
