Great teacher who know's what he's teaching. Highly recommened.
Awesome teacher makes ochem easy+++
He's a great teacher, who has an incredible wealth of organic chem knowledge
Hard tests, do not relate to readings, too many students forced to retake!!!!
You have to study for an "A", I did.....
Best teacher around. Take him.
Boy does he confuse me! I think it can be taught in a clearer way. Tests are pretty tough; you better work your butt off. And don't get caught napping like I did, he will chew you out!
knows what he is talking about but his tests are WAY harder than the stuff he talks about in lecture..pretty nice guy though
student says Dr. B I have a question ,His response DONT CALL ME THAT I AM NOT YOUR FRIEND This guy is hardcore, very smart professor but can't translate it ideas that well! Don't fall asleep-he likes to throw chalk at you even if your a hottie!
Good tests, relates to reading. Take Bergdahl if you want to learn
tough teacher and takes the course very seriously but if you want to learn ochem..he's the guy.
Don't take the morning lecture. He's not much of a morning person. But overall he's a good professor and will be very responsive and helpful once you show him you want to learn the material. Take a workshop or get a tutor if you can.
Knows his stuff...Go to office hours and let him know you are interested in the material. Clear, concise lectures but tests are NOTHING like the practice exams he puts up.
Thanks for a wonderful semester.
Likes to put students on the spot, but he knows his o-chem
nice guy but tough class! Ask lots of questions and pay attention. Participation and active learning are a must to pass class!
Dr. Bergdahl doesn't mess around and never come late to his lectures b/c he will humiliate you in front of everyone. Buy the book, review his previous exams and let him know you are interested. He does curve. Overall, he's not bad just a stickler.
Great professor, very helpful and really knows his ochem. Study hard!
very strict, but knows his stuff. do attend every lecture and do not be late or else everyone will know who you are, and review your notes...also gets on his good side and you'd be fine.
his lecture material is kind of hard, but seeing him during office hours help a lot, just keep up with his **** or you'll fail the tests. He has great curves for the tests.
Take Bergdahl if you can. Great teacher. Expects a lot but you will learn.
best Ochem teacher at SDSU
Great teacher..expects a lot but he makes sure you know your stuff. Clear lectures and fair tests. Do the homework problems and you'll be fine. Highly recommend taking him if you can
Bergdahl is great. He is funny and cracks jokes, but really knows his stuff. He just wants his students to learn and appriciate what he is teaching. Sure he is hard, but who can learn if a professor is a pushover?? He is fair, so difficulty is
His class isn't really that hard but his lectures are kin of hard to follow.
doesnt give example problems. You never know whats gonna be on the test. Hard class and very lame lectures. Teaches chem off of power point! who does that?
Took his class and had to repeat because he decided that to many people had good grades so he dropped the lab portion of the grade. instantly about 1/3 of the class was forced to repeat. He is arrogant and insults you if he thinks your question is dumb.
Advanced Organic Chemistry was great. You can tell he worked with the likes of Nicolau. His notes are all you need for the class and his exams are fair. Great professor for 431 as well.
great prof. he explains everything in detail, and wants his students to understand. his practice tests r very similar to the actual test, and he has a generous curve. beware, if u want to sleep in the class go to the very back or dont come at all, or he will put u on the spotlight. u dont want that
i really liked him before he was my teacher for more than one semester. he's a pompous ass which does make him funny, but none the less, still an ass. you better do some serious ass kissing if you want a decent grade. good luck :)
It's a little harder to pick up the patterns cause he limits the concepts to one example (leaving out any possible scenarios that you pick up in the homework problems/practice tests). I felt like I cheated because the curve was ridiculously helpful. But hell, I'm happy.
Test are hard, but subject is difficult. Great curve though.
One of the best chem teachers i had. Very CLEAR and his practice exams are similar to his test. I came to his office hours, he's helful. CURVE IS GOOD! Saved me many times..
He was a great teacher. His lectures are very clear and his tests aren't that hard if you go to lecture. As far as organic chemistry teachers go, he's one of the best. But like all the others, you have put put the time in or you won't pass.
Takes some getting used to, but very helpful during office hours
The man is straight forward, and helpful. Take him, and pick his brain on the subject matter. I love organic chemistry, but ignoring that, he's an inspiring teacher, very passion, and quite caring. His lectures follow his lecture notes. Do EVERY problem available, and read!!!!!!
O-chem is not easy, but he is a great teacher who makes it bearable and actually teaches. I'm learning this now after I had a worse prof. for chem 431.

This Profesoor is actually teaching and seems to care a lot about his students, and he is an inspiring mentor. The subject is hard but not impossibe. There a lot of winers that are rating him, but then again there are some loosers in class too. He is the greatest Coach I have had!
day 1 quote "this book is the same one used at Harvard, dont read it, do the HW and reference the CHP if needed, move your pencil!" Very clear and helpful.teaches visually as well as conceptually. intimidating at first, but he's funny at times and always up for questions. be at the top and he might write you a letter!
Don't come into class late, eat or yawn in class... he gets really annoyed. He's an amazing teacher and has well organized notes. You can ask him questions during class to clarify, during breaks or in office hours, and he is really helpful.
Great professor.. Ochem seems like a very hard class but its not.. he makes the subject so simple and explains it really really well.. extremely helpful during office hours and very nice if u dont get anything...do the problems on textbook and wiley and youll be fine for the midterms..
This is a HARD class but he breaks it down to a simple level. His tests are a lot like the practice midterms and he is very nice and will help you out if you need him. He can be an ass but he is very passionate about his field and doesnt like people who arent. But from my experience, passionate teachers make the very best teachers.
O-Chem isn?t hard, there?s just a *ton* of concepts. Get behind and you drown. Cramming is impossible. Bergdahl is a good lecturer; take lots of space writing notes; you?ll be writing in margins later. Do not come to class if you?re not going to pay attn.; he will call you out and (rightfully) embarrass you. Tests follow practice tests mostly.
I did better on the final & last midterm by not going to class!Lecture is hard to follow b/c he doesn't go over the mechanisms you need to know to understand what he is doing.Go over the notes yourself and figure out all the mechs.& practice them and you should do well.Remember products of rxns & shortcuts if you can.I worked really hard for an A.
Prof. Bergdahl is a great professor. He is passionate about o-chem and he got me more interested and more appreciate of o-chem. The class is very difficult. You must keep up with the chapters, do the suggested problems, go to lecture, go to office hrs/tutoring. He curves generously! But you gotta be ready to work really hard & have no life!
Very passionate professor, but his tests are hard. O-Chem is a subject that you cannot fall behind on, I recommend studying for at least 2 hours a night.
A VERY TIME CONSUMING CLASS!!! Bergdahl has a PhD from Sweeden in Organic Chemistry, and he's got a lab and has been published, he knows his stuff! BUT I felt that the lectures, which were VERY indepth (he LOVES questions), did not help me as much because I didn't have time to read beforehand. Like said you will have no life, need to study daily!
A great professor. Very thorough, helpful, and passionate in regards to organic chemistry. Getting a good grade is very tangible - you do have to study a lot, but he provides practice exams, extra weekend sessions, and the curve is huge. I wish he was teaching 432.
Before taking his class I dreaded Chemistry, but somehow he actually made me sorta like it. This is a class you CANNOT fall behind on. Go to class, take notes, ask questions, read the book, and do the problems...etc. Do EVERYTHING he gives you. It's not impossible to get an A in the class, you just need to do the work. Decent curve in the end thoug
Extremely helpful, miss his teaching style in chem432. Knows his stuff, ochem his passion. Before taking his class I was very worried about the ochem but he made the subject simple and I liked it. He is the nicest guy...if he knows you he will write you a letter.
Great Professor! Took his chem 432 class and he made it really easy, no mandatory homework, 3 tests 1 final. His Curve is all about the final. I got a 65% 76% and 85% on test and 87% on the final and got an A I was the 8th highest grade and now work in his lab. So just do better on each test and you will do great!
AWESOME teacher. Really knows his stuff and willing to help anyone that has problems which is quite often considering the difficulty of the class to begin with. Basically uses similar questions from previous exams. Got a 100% on one of the exams and ended up with an A in the class. Best Chemistry teacher I have had at SDSU, and he speaks English
Those who are saying he is mean/hard clearly did not even try. He is the most helpful teacher, and he is so kind! Of course he is going to get annoyed when he is trying to teach a bunch of uninterested people who are yawning or on their phone, who wouldn't be? key things, sit in front, practice mechs, and go to office hours for extra help!
OChem is a hard subject. Dr. Bergdahl does a fair job by teaching all you need to know (and tests on.) Referenced the book, but he provides lecture notes to be explained IN CLASS. He expects interest and effort, which is valid (it's 432!) Don't miss class at all, do his practice exams, and listen to his advice. Grading is curved--helped me out.
If you did well in ochem 1 it will be easy. 3 midterms 1 final that's cummulative generous extra credit given on the exams and he curves I mean come on ppl. No excuse to not get an A. Also very approachable and questions directly from slides and practice exams do not need textbook. Bergdahl is great i got 85,79,100 on the 3 midterms (85=A!) #24
He is a great teacher who really cares about his students and about organic chemistry. His passion really shows which motivates students to learn the material. Attend lecture, do the practice tests, and ask questions, you can succeed! He also holds helpful review sessions. Office hours are very helpful as well. Take him you won't regret it
Dr.Bergdahl is a wonderful teachers. He really values and recognizes the students that try hard, and rewards them for it in the end. Work hard, study harder, sit in the front, and pay attention! Do the practice problems and definitely the practice tests. I would 100% recommend Bergdahl to anyone. I'd also recommend the summer course!
Dr. Bergdahl was very enthusiastic. His desire for his students to learn was obvious, and he liked to tie in the lecture material with real world application/experience/current events in the field. If you want to do well and learn a lot you will not miss a class. Ask questions, do the homework, study the practice exams, and have fun!
Nice guy. Cracks lots of jokes. He teaches well. The only issue I had with him is that his tests cover a lot of material and prior to the tests he doesn't tell you exactly what things you should know and what things aren't so important. So you might spend hours studying things that don't even end up on the exam
Not an easy class by any means. But he's a great guy and he really knows his stuff. He's always willing to help you out if you're lost. Only take this class if you have a lot of time to study though. I joined a study group and used clutch prep and I recommend that you do the same. You get out what you put in!
Got an A in both 232 and 432 with Bergdahl! Best teacher for ochem, he knows his stuff and his exams are super fair and correlate with the material he teaches. Did not go to class once for 432 and studied myself the week before and got A's on every exam. Good luck!
I cannot make it to Dr. Bergdahl's office hours, but he was still willing to help me even though it's not his office hours. Great professor! Highly recommended.
This is a tough course but Bergdahl gives his students all the tools they need to do well. Summer course grade was based on 2 midterms and a final. Previous exams posted online to help students prepare. Dont fall behind because its hard to catch up anddont come to class if youre goin to use your phone/look disinterested, he will call you out on it!
AWESOME instructor! The material is difficult but Berdahl knows his stuff and is capable to make it easy using common logic and simple rules so you don't have to memorize stuff. Got a 70% on one of the exams and ended up with an A in the class. Don't fall behind. Best Chemistry teacher I have had at SDSU, and he speaks Swedish too.
Great Professor, contrary to what others think! He has taught the class so many times that he understands which topics will confuse students the most. Some students said the class was hard, but most of them were not in lecture and attendance is important! Attendance will determine how you and others do in class!
Great instructor. He really understands the material and provides step by step examples in class. Notes were good to follow and attendance was not mandatory but important. You'll miss out on some things he emphasizes. Overall he was awesome.
Although the choices are scarce, I would not recommend taking Dr. Bergdahl. He knows his organic chemistry and shows immense passion, but is extremely reactive. Class is only 50 minutes but will spend 5 minutes yelling at the class about attendance or people yawning in class. Is not approachable and is rude if concepts are not understood.
Rude to students. Test difficulty equates to class participation, sleeping in class, attendance, etc. Would not recommend.
Outstanding prof probably one of the best in the chemistry department. If you are still in high school of course you are going to enjoy this. The instructor gave everything I needed in term of preparation. He is scary but only since some of you don't know him. Office hours taking notes helped me.
Professor has a passion for what he teaches. He's very thorough and knowledgeable. He has quite the sense of humor. I really really really enjoyed his lectures. I also went to his office for questions and he was extremely helpful.
Professor Bergdahl is obviously passionate about his subject. Lecture material comes fast and makes note-taking difficult, fortunately all lectures are posted online for later review. Heads up: He expects his students to be respectful. Don't fall asleep in class or arrive late and walk between him and his students or you WILL be called out.
Amazing professor. Really helpful + provides you with absolutely everything you need to do well. There are review sessions and office hours for help and he answers emails very promptly. You can tell he wants you to succeed. It would be wise to do the book problems, pay attention in lecture and use the help he gives you.
Prof. Bergdahl is a great professor. He teaches a high level of ochem in a simple way so that students can understand and do well (if they put in some effort). He genuinely cares about the success of his students. I recommend taking ochem with him! Good luck! Word of advice: Be respectful in class.
He is a great professor who cares about how his students do in the course. Tough material but he is there if you need help. Attendance to class is necessary to do well in the course unless you are an organic chem genius. Lectures are very useful and when he says do the book problems, do the book problems!!
The class is based on 3 midterms, 1 final, online hw and inclass assignments. Going to lecture helped because hes a good teacher but i practiced alot on my own time. Go to SI and read the book, it helps a lot. He offers extra credit once during the semester which didnt seem like much but it does make a difference. the 3rd exams hard so study early.
Prof. Bergdahl is probably one of the most caring professsors I've had, he really cares about all of his students and wants you to pass. Beware though the 3rd midterm is the hardest and the final is no joke either, study using homework and book problems, go to SI, go to office hours and get as much tutoring as possible, study all exams in advance.
Bergdahl is probably the best organic professor to take for 232. I currently am taking Chem 432 with a different professor and wish I still was taking his course. I recommend doing book problems, going to office hours and taking very detailed notes. He provides more than 10 practice exams with keys... Take advantage of them for each exam!
I was told Dr. Bergdahl was a difficult professor but it was the exact opposite: he was very clear on what he expected us to know for the midterms (making it easier to study for them) and was really open to answer every question. Start studying at least a week before, the material is still very hard; although if you get stuck he's very helpful.
He's a nice guy and really cares, but he gets mad when you ask questions. Expect to google a lot of random terminology mid-class because he doesn't explain chemist slang. He gave us a phat curve, but doesn't tell you what'll be on the test. Mostly reads off slides, does a few examples. I went to every class but Khan Academy was more helpful tbh.
The only way to pass is to study each day after the lecture. A lot of concepts you have to understand by yourself. Lectures were not helpful and most of the time it was just looking at reactions. Advice: Read the book & do the practice questions. There is a fat curve but don't rely on it. Make a study group & get a tutor! ( 3 exams and a final)
The thing about his class is that there is much you need to teach yourself. I personally learned more from youtube videos than the textbook,& his class was there to help but only a little bit because he was rude most of the time when we would ask questions. He seems like he does care but also I feel like practice exams would've been helpful.
Bergdahl is the best choice for o-chem. The class itself is extremely challenging but he does his best to minimize the difficulty. He has activities that are worth the same amount as an exam so always go to class. NEVER COME LATE TO CLASS, STAY OFF PHONES, DON'T TALK IN CLASS. He will call you out on it and it makes him create harder exams!!!
Although the class is tough, Prof. Bergdahl really cares about his students' success and wants everyone to do well. He does tend to snap at people for being distracted in class but that is because he wants to make sure you pay attention when the material is going to be on the exam. He is very willing and able to answer any questions you may have
Bergdahl tends to snap at students, so never use phones, talk, or show up late to lecture. However, he is a really great teacher for such a difficult subject. I never used the textbook, just go to SI twice a week and you will do great! Use old exams to study, some exam questions come directly from the previous exams! In class activities on Fridays!
listen it's ochem it's gonna be hard. took it over the summer with him and I would highly recommend especially if you don't HAVE to take 432. Randomly does notecard quizzes and he grades them tough. BIG on respect so don't even think about taking out ur phone or coming late, HE WILL MAKE YOU LEAVE. It tough but he's the best ochem teacher no doubt
Ochem is never going to be easy. it seems like students with As give him glowing reviews without noting what really matters. He goes very fast during lecture, would yell at students for minor things (like yawning, being 1 minute late, talking with friends BEFORE class, texting-even). I relied on SI to pass this class, I'm an A student otherwise.
Took ochem during COVID, and all our lectures were asynchronous. Bergdahl had office hours instead every other day for us to ask questions and they're pretty helpful. He's nice and very patient at his office hours but his recorded lectures are pretty boring and long. textbook not needed but helps. do the practice exams on the ochem website to study
Prof Bergdahl is awesome. His lectures go fast but if you ask the right questions he is really good at explaining things. He is also really good during office hours.
I absolutely loved his class. He presented things so clearly and explained each step so well. I previously had Purse for ochem and he didn't explain anything at all but Bergdahl really clarified things for me and made me understand ochem so much better. He is such a sweet man and he is very helpful whenever you had questions.
Very fair, enjoyed the class!! Gave a curve at the end of the class that was very fair.
Great professor. Many students only bash him because of the toughness of the material he teaches and their inability to dedicate the time needed for this course. You need to keep up with the class; his lectures are very straightforward, and he has great office hours. Pay attention in class, read the textbook, and ask for help.
he really isn't that bad. show up, pay attention, and be respectful. attend SI too. attending lecture is not enough to get a good grade in this class, you NEED to put in extra time doing practice problems. he's passionate when it comes to ochem and he does his best to help where he can. massive curve too but always aim to do well on exams.
He is very passionate about ochem. He may seem a bit tough, but that is only because he wants everyone to succeed. He has good lecture slides, but you will need to dedicate a lot of time outside of lecture to do well in this course. Very test heavy, but there is a nice curve at the end. I truly learned so much in this class.
I was always worried about orgo, but realize after taking Dr. B's class, it is all about understanding this stuff. His motto is "study right" and that sounds about right because memorization and purging did not work well for me initially. Dr. B is one of the best instructors I have had, highly recommended, super kind and always available.
Everyone raved about ochem being extremely difficult, but Bergdahl gave you all the necessary resources to succeed. Lecture slides and practice exams were extremely helpful. I actually learned the material, but you do have to work hard. There was never anything on the exams that surprised me incredibly though. Now that I'm in biochem, I miss him.
I'm pretty sure he deletes bad ratings because he is not a nice professor nor do people actually think he's a 4.1/5 star prof. Go to Bunce to learn things because he is not a good teacher. Expect to dedicate your life to learning all the material by yourself.
