He's a lawyer, very interesting class...not your average speech class. He continually revises the material he covers so that it can be more effective and create an overall better learning experience for the class. This guy knows what he's doing!!

Great Teacher, willing to help, but you have to put out effort. Occasionally gives out extra points just for coming to class that day!

i love his theory of keep it simple stupid it works and it helps with the pressure of writting a speech. he takes the presure off writting the speechs and makes it fun.

U either love em or u hate em, will put u on the spot if ur late, rude, etc. (but I get over stuff easily). But I can make a speech no problem, passed with an A.

He is a very good teacher. He helps you whenever you need it and he won't make you look stupid if you do the work when he tells you to.also he can look very scarey and mean but do not pay attention he only does that to let the loser get out quicker. My class started with 30 and ended with 10.

it is understandable that some would be offended by his sarcastic and abrassive attitude, but he's a good teacher. the course is common sense and its all in his notes.

This online class, although new, was very structured and organized. I didn't feel overwhelmed and enjoyed the fact that despite our other work we only had four major speeches the entire course. This online class is a great concept. If you have a chance to take it, take it. He is a good teacher and person, very respectable.

Great Teacher. Be honest with him and he's great. If you don't get something. He doesn't give you the answer, but explains how to get the answer yourself. So that you learn and are not just repeating things. He does talk about his life experiences, but that is how he relates to the class. I never heard him curse during the semester.

Took this class online testes were easy if you read the book first. very harsh on grading speeches, with little explination of your grade. would not take another class w/ him.

This guy was hilarious and loves to talk a lot. He gets the class talkative and laughing so we feel comfortable for us to give our speech. If you want a fun class and not that hard take this class! He goes through how to make an outline EASY and giving the speechs are just as easy and he's good on giving nice grades. He also gives extra credit!

Mr. Artiaga is one of the best teachers I have had at SCC. I am one of those people that HATES giving speeches but he really does make you feel comfortable, confident and well-prepared. I would highly recommend him to anyone.

Was extremly helpful.If you have any questions he doesnt mind at all calling his office or stopping bye his office to ask for help and I took advantge of that.Has you write notes and they are helpful for quizes, speaches.Great humor keeeps you awake and intrested and if need visuals take notes,writes on board . dont need the book never used it.

One of the better teachers I've had and I've tried to take speech several times. I'm getting an A so I don't know if he is harsh on grading. Actually I hope so because we had to sit through a 15 minute speech the other night and I honestly am not sure what the guy was talking about and I hope he didn't get an A.

Amazing Instructor. Really knows his subject and is able to convey his messages in a clear and concise manner. Is extremely funny. We spend most of the class laughing. I enjoy his class immensely and recommend it to anyone with a phobia of public speaking.

Like to weave stories about his neice into the class to demonstrat how speech techniques are applicable at all stages of life and / or that the natural reactions of a 6 year old are some of the natural reactions you will see in your audience as well as feel as the speaker. I had him for Introduction To Oral Communication class. You cannot miss a single day when others are giving presentations, unless you have a recent death of a loved one. It's hard to tell what you can do to get better presentation grades unless you discuss it at length at his office, and his research paper topics are incredibly boring.

Mike is a great prof!!! He is very helpful to students individually. My boyfriend missed almost a month of class but Prof Mike worked with him and he still got a B. He taught us a lot of useful info in a way we could easily understand - and he truly cares about us. He is hilarious & outgoing and makes a fun and comfortable classroom environment.

He was Awsome!!! You must be present to each class. Mandatory attendance and must NOT be late or you are counted absent. However, the calss was worth it. He kept the content inresting and related it to current and common situations. Easy to work with and very informative. TAKE HIS CLASS!!

Took the online version & it was very laid back. About 10 busy work assignments from the book, but he is easy on grading speeches & book work. Total of 4 speeches on campus. He is very nice, laid back, and understanding. I don't see how you could fail even if you turn in sucky assignments & give 4 mediocre speeches.

Absolutely incredible! Having such a HUGE fear of public speaking, i was very apprehensive about taking this class. He is very encouraging/helpful/informative. After taking this class, you will be a natural!

Mike Artiaga is an amazing guy! Completely overqualified, he continues to bring humility and hilarity into every class, and is always willing to help with students problems. He grades fairly and gives students their chance to grow. I cannot recommend this teacher enough.

Probably the most likable professor at SSC. He is funny and is way overqualified to teach at a community college. He is willing to work with everyone and very understanding and flexible. Don't miss class, finish speeches, and pay attention, it is worth it. One note, you are required to write outlines and research for speeches. No improv.

Mr. Artiaga is definitely the best teacher I have ever had. I was extremely nervous about taking a speech class, because I hate speaking in front of people! But he makes it SO fun and takes the pressure away from being nervous at all. I highly recommend this class to ANYone who is looking into taking it.

I didnt want to take speech like anyone else. He made it easy. Give a couple easy speechs and thats it, you dont even write the speech just the outline. Every time I see him in the hall i still say hello pretty funny guy get him during a sports season and you can talk about football or baseball. Overall pretty good class

I took his speech class over the summer for B term. It was the easiest A I could have made. The teacher was funny, and I learned a lot of new things from him. He went out of his way to make sure everyone felt comfortable since public speaking is a bit stressful. Just go to class and do your speeches, and you will do fine!

This is a great professor. He is very laid back on grading and very understaning when it comes to giving speeches.His quizzes/homework is easy but can be timely. Just turn your assignments in on time and you'll be fine. Im glad I took him over other speech professors.

I took this class on-line. You had to show up to class just to deliver your speechs. He gives homework, quizzes, speech analysis, outlines in addition to your speechs. Extremely tough on grading. I had to work hard in this class to get the A!

Casual instructor. Funny and relatable, but tough grader. Not an easy A class, so you have to work for it. Four speeches and about 3 quizzes. Only need the textbook for the quizzes, since they are a little hard. Provides extra credit opportunities. Is not strict on attendance, so on some speech days you might not even have to come to class.

I'll be honest, Artiaga is DEFINITELY one of the best professors I have ever had. He is smart, witty, and always wants you to go to him when necessary. Visit him during his office hours and he will assist you. I would HIGHLY suggest this professor!

Great professor!!! He cares so much about his students and wants you to succeed. He comes up with fun nick names for all of us too. Knows his stuff, spends summers working on law cases and teaches in the fall and spring. Highly recommend and would take another class with him if at all possible.

I have high anxiety and I didnt want to take speech, but he made me feel so confident as the semester went on. I always gave short speeches and still got an A. I didnt buy the book and still get A's on the quizzes, just borrow someones for an hr dont buy it. Hes very funny and an easy grader. Its a fun class. Dont be nervous, there is no need.

You MUST take this professor! I chose to take the mixed class where everything is online and you just go to campus to give your speeches. He is SO funny and sweet and makes you feel so comfortable when going to give your speeches. He always has nothing but good feedback and seriously is just wonderful.

He is a really great professor to take for a sometimes nerve wrecking speech class. He gave lots of notes and examples. After speeches, he would also give feedback, but never rude. You can tell he really is interested in his students, even though he may never learn their names. He also is very sarcastic and cracked lots of jokes. Easy grader.

My favorite professor! He jokes around a lot and gives you outlines for each speech to follow. If you go by the outline and have enough info, you should get an A. He gives one speech a month and the day after your speech you don't have to attend class. We had a few quizzes but they were all open book. He's very chill and I would take him again!

I took the hybrid online course and only had to be present in class 4 times for speech nights. Mr. Artiaga was wonderful and very clear on everything. Speech was terrifying for me but this course was easier and more fun than I would have ever anticipated.

"Oh my god, what a guy". Very lenient in grading, as for speeches, just make sure to cite your sources and look alive. The final speech is incredibly easy on purpose, it's mostly graded according to delivery and it's on something you don't need sources for. He clearly wants everyone to pass. He gives you many resources to study for the state exam.

Good professor for students who are shy and don't like giving speechs

He's really BIG on standing tall. A very well ROUNDed professor, he has a WIDE skill-set . He helps a lot with overcoming speaking anxiety. His sense of humor is very LARGE.

"Oh my god what a guy." Artiaga is by far the funniest professors there is. I enjoyed being in this class very much. He helps you relax and not have so much anxiety by being able to use pp's and outlines and he even cut the class size in half. but he can be rude when he is angry. All his quizzes are open book except two for the whole semester.

I'm not the biggest fan of public speaking but I found this class to make it a lot easier. He broke the class in half so you don't have to speak to the entire class on speech days which was nice. Quizzes are hard if you don't read but as long as you do well on the speeches your grade will be fine. I didn't do well on the quizzes but still got an A.

All you have to do is show up, and do exactly what he tells you to do in your speeches. He likes to lift the air with jokes and stories, and isnt afraid to joke back and forth with students. He is very helpful with feedback, has plenty of office hours, and promotes the success of students. I was only nervous for the first speech because of his help

Great speech class! Had 3 speeches and class was split up to seeing him once a week. I'm not a public speaker kind of person and he made it easy with having the split class and he grades easily, as long as you go up and put in some effort.

If you are afraid of public speaking, take his class. He split the class in half so students would be more comfortable. A total of 3 speeches as of now. Overall, an amazing professor!

Reasonably easy class, extremely generous with deadlines and extensions, pushing back due dates for seemingly no reason (which was a welcome surprise in exam periods). Doesn't require an audience for speeches which makes submissions easier, textbook review questions were easy and not overly long. Overall positive experience.

Highly recommend!! I had him for SPC1608, and he was super nice! There are 3 speeches, and he always extended the deadlines so we had more time to do our speeches. Assignments are easy and do require textbook, and self explanatory. Quizzes are easy if you read the chapters and watch the videos. EXTENSIONS & EXTRA CREDIT!

So great! He literally says "just do what I tell you to, and you'll get an A." He is very laid back, and going in to class was a breeze, just do what you're asked and present it well, as he wants you to succeed! He made me feel 10x better about speaking, as he would divide the class for speeches for a smaller crowd. So if you are nervous, take him!

I took this class online and it was probably the easiest class ever. For the first few weeks it was assignments where he tells you which chapters to read and you answer the questions. Others were you read a speech and answer the analysis questions. There were only 3 speeches and he wasn't a hard critic. He gives you clear guidelines so follow them!
