Very tough exams, but I learned a lot.

Easy material, but he makes it challenging. Pre-labs hurt your grade badly. His helpfulness isn't helpful at all in most cases.
Really nice guy, but difficult. Covers a lot of material that has to be memorized. I scraped by with a B.
Straight to the point. If you get a copy of his tests, you'll ace the class.. if you dont, make sure you take good notes. Do the homework, they weigh more than the labs. No leniancy or help during lab, which could hurt your grade.
a very smart teacher, probably the only teacher at spsu that actually tries to make you think about what you are doing, very helpful also
Class was straight up lecture, which I like, and very clear w/ lots of examples. Tests on what he talks about, but gets specific on the short answer. Rest is multiple choice Uses Web CT and is very good about updating grades. Not much homework, and easy at that. Didn't have him for lab.
I think he's an ok guy, but he's really monotone (I had a hard time staying focused in his class), and he makes you turn in assignments at the beginning of class (won't accept them if you're late -- AT ALL). Very knowledgable, but it seemed like pace was too fast during alot of the class. I don't recommend him, take the course somewhere else.
Seems like an extremely smart person but his lectures are not the best. Lectures are rather boring even though the material is interesting. Is a very tough grader and not leniant at all. Gives the impression that he doesn't really want to be here and doesn't seem to care for students too much. Overall, wouldn't recommend taking him.
The book he uses SUCK big time. So if you are the type of person who relys on studying the book, good luck. He was good for Biology, but not for this class.
His tests were exactly what he covered in class. Good teacher. Put some effort forth and you will get a good grade. Labs are long though.
Awesome teacher. Great for lab too! First test was hard... but he drops your lowest. NO EXTRA CREDIT... but if you study and go to class you will do fine!!
Neat guy, take him for Labs. Lectures rather boring if in the back its easy to lose focus.
This is the worst teacher ever! He teaches you the material, but it is definitely not going to be on the test. His Pre-labs that he makes you turn in the week before the labs are hard, and he expects you to answer impossible questions that he has not taught you nor will he even teach you during the lab. Do not take him at all.
if there is any organization to his lectures, it is a mystery to the students. the material is very difficult to take notes on and he doesnt give any meaningful supplement material. it's nearly impossible to decipher between information he expects us to memorize and what he's just using for illustrative purposes. expect a quiz every week. not recom
I had this guy for lab in Bio 1. I can tell you I'm going to try to avoid him for ALL classes. When I tried to ask him questions he got this condescending attitude with me, and he obviously did not want to help me understand the material which was what I needed. He grades uneccesarily hard for minutia. This guy is the worst.
This guy was not as bad as previous comments state. He makes you work and memorizing will just not work. You have to understand the material. pre-labs are tough but easy quizzes once a week. First test easy, rest are difficult.
guy never used the text book and his powerpoints contained no worthy information that could help you study for an exam. He wouldn't bump me one point to pass the class I'm considering making a formal complaint against this so-called 'teacher' who obviously doesn't care about his students gaining entry bio information and more worried bout research
Dr. Beach is not nearly as bad as the ratings. He has an entire folder on Vista with supplemental material. If you stop by his office he takes the time to assist you and help you understand. If you're serious, you know you have to take some initiative. There's a bio tutor as well. Quizzes are easy, Exams are tough, and some prelabs are INSANE!!!
I have him for lab and I must say that I will never take any of his classes again. He is boring and very hard to understand. He acts like he doesn't want to teach. Thank goodness I have Dr. Louten in lecture because I absolutely hate having Beach for lab. If he is the only professor that teaches Genetics then I will transfer to Georgia Tech.
He is hard. You can show up for every class, take copious notes, review the Power Points and attempt to answer his practice exam questions and still barely pass. I had a 4.0 (am a junior) but I ended up with a C. I poured hours and hours into the class to no avail. Miss a class, fail the test. I would never recommend him or take him again.
Hard class. I put in alot of work, still got a C. However, such is the price of learning the material and a good education. Study and do homework and the class is fine.
I took Bio in high school and got a D, and I got an A in this class, he is a great teacher, easy to understand, if you show up to every class and do the very little hw he assigns, you'll do fine on the tests. Don't complain about him if you skip classes.
Beach was my lab instructor. I'd give him a "so so" if a friend asked me. Not the best, but not the worse, totally lacked enthusiasm, but had reasonable grading. He would be my last choice of professors for lecture, but it wasn't bad at all putting up with him once a week for lab.
About as hard as genetics. He seems to be more helpful now, probably because I'm a senior. Study the guides to pass the tests. Guides are 100+ questions long. Most interesting biology class I have taken.
Although his lectures are soporific, he teaches very well! If you aspire to pursue a career in the medical field, take Beach. If you are looking for an easy course, transfer to another institute. Our department prepares future professionals. Beach is also very austere & cynical but don't be intimidated by his presence. He is a very interesting man.
Had him for genetics this semester and he's my favorite prof thus far. He's helpful (but you MUST ask!) and funny, but not a 'typical' sense of humor I suppose. I'm going to take molecular bio solely because he's teaching it. Wish he taught more classes. He's not easy, but if he were, he wouldn't be doing us any favors. This man knows his stuff.
Beach is a cool guy, and a great professor to take. If you talk to him 1-on-1, you can tell then he really likes what he teaches, and really likes helping people understand it. Lots of proteins to memorize, but overall very manageable course. Definitely recommend.
Took him for molecular(not sure about course #). He was hard, but I did learn a lot from his class. Look through the book for picture slides. Study those slides definitely. Overall, he was a good teacher. He's hilarious!
One of the best teachers at the university. He is definitely not an easy teacher, but he helps you understand the material! I left this class feeling much more confident about my career path. Great sense of humor!
He was a very good professor. If you study his slides and know the examples, YOU WILL GET AN A. I didn't have to study too much. I just made sure that I knew all of the previous material before every class so that I was prepared for the possible quiz and that helped a lot. Just make sure you are solid on all material. Always ask questions.
Great teacher - his lectures are usually all you need to do good on the test. 5 Homework assignments and 4 tests + final. Drops your lowest test grade. Homework is easy and his tests are very manageable as long as you go to class. His lectures usually cover everything you need for the tests and the homework, so make sure you go to class!
Easy A. Not a hard class, those who complain aren't doing it right. GO TO CLASS. Be able to answer those practice exam questions, hence GO to lecture. He tells you exactly what's going to be on the exam. Don't buy the book. His lectures are interesting and engaging. He really simplifies it for you. If you think it won't be on the exam - it will.
I owe my MCAT BS section to him. By far the best professor I've ever taken. You will leave his lecture feeling confident. Precise and clear, you won't need to look at anything besides his PP slides to do well. Attending the lecture will help you. No homework. Tests are completely based on his lectures. Fair grader. Hilarious! unique sense of humor.
Dr. Beach is a nice enough guy, has an odd sense of humor, and is fairly easy to get along with. His lectures are very detailed and his tests are EXTREMELY difficult. The labs are a lot of fun and can save your grade, which you'll need because of those brutal exams. They're long and very difficult to prepare for since there's no review.
Not hard at all, He isnt going to hold your hand through the class but if you read and actually study the notes then you are okay.. Attendance isnt mandatory but he doesnt post his lecture slides online so you should go. Sometimes he doesnt directly answer your questions, just to make you think, which is annoying! He is one of the better professors
His test are really hard. Most of what he talks about has nothing to do with the test. You have to read and understand it to be able to pass the test. DO NOT MEMORIZE. Never again
Horrible professor. His test are vary hard. He uses ppt, nothin but pictures to teach.
Gave pre-lab lecture on material for that day. Helpful in answering questions but YOU have to approach him with specific questions. Fair grader but the tests were hard. Genetics was not my thing but he helped me through. Nice guy.
Great Teacher. Had him for both lecture and lab. Tests weren't easy but if you took good notes during class you'll do fine. Had Pre-Lab quizzes and Lab Handouts are to be completed and turned in before leaving the lab. He was never critical when we made mistakes in lab and was understanding.
I took Dr. Beach for Micro and he was not bad at all. His tests are kind of tricky, so pay close attention to each of the answer choices. His exams stem from the powerpoint slides, but going to class is definitely beneficial. I like him and recommend him for Micro.
Dr. Beach was a great professor and this class wasn't too hard. Test are a lot to study for though just because the material is so much and so detailed. 5 tests and no cumulative final which was nice. And lots of mastering homework too which was helpful.
There is a prelab quiz before every lab including the first one. Then he goes over the lab and gives you tips which is helpful. Pretty fair/easy grader on the actual labs too.
Dr. Beach is one of the best professors I have had at KSU. He really loves Microbiology. He gives homework after every class, but they took me 30 minutes max. If you go to class, pay attention and take notes you will not find it very difficult. He tests strictly from his lectures.
This class was way harder than I expected. If you aren't good at testing/ have test anxiety, this class is pretty brutal. He claims tests come directly from lectures but the questions are very tricky. However, homework is very easy and you can earn points for attendance. Will be retaking for a higher grade.
I would recommend Vogelein for Genetics. Beach is a good guy and a great teacher, but his exams are rough. Also, he usually only teaches microbiology, so that could have been a reason that this semester was rough. I think it was his first time teaching genetics. Take someone else if you want to pass.
Please don't take Beach for Genetics. Yes, he wants you to succeed, but the test difficulty pretty much makes that impossible. His exams are the type where you'll study for hours and make below a 60. Take Nowak or Vogelein instead.
Genetics with Beach is one of those classes were an A is incredibly difficult, but a B is pretty much what you'll get if you put in the work. Tests are tough, and I would overall recommend Vogelein.
Keep in mind that genetics is a tough class. But Professor explains everything very thoroughly and takes his time explaining key concepts- everything else, he just breezes through. His tests are really hard but do come straight from powerpoint slides. He assigns hw after every lecture but it's easy and helps you practice.
The lab with him was sometimes very disorganized. The grades are lab checkouts every week and lab assessments every 2 labs. These assessments are extremely difficult and is what killed my grade.
I took Dr. Beach for both genetics lecture and lab, and I received an A in both classes. For lecture, a text book is not needed, so I never bought one and saved $100. Attend class and pay attention to the "big idea", and study his power points. For lab, his assessments were challenging but manageable. Study the protocols well. Overall knowledgable.
I took this lab with Mr. Beach going into the class not knowing anything about him. I learned throughout the course that he is slightly awkward, and does not have a TA in the class helping him answer questions. I found that I often had questions and he was hard to find even in the same room! He did not explain fully what was to go in the lab report
Pro. Beach is a really laid back and knowledgeable professor. He is always willing to explain a subject more fully if asked. Genetics is a quick-paced course but he spends time drawing out concepts on the board. Prepare to spend time studying, but that is true of all upper level science courses. Great professor.
He's a good professor. Accessible for office hours and replies to emails quickly. Graded by 4 exams, homework, and attendance. No cumulative final. 88.5 and up gets you and A. 78.5 is a B and so on. Tests are straight forward, do his study guides and you will get a good grade on his tests.
LAB ONLY. Really really long pre-lab lectures but the lab practice test are about 90% the same as the lab exams. Easy to make an A. Optional lab final that replaces your lowest lab exam. Grade consists of lab attendance, lab exams, and pre-test that are online. A solid choice for genetics lab.
He is a great lab professor. Gives biweekly assessments (tests) over the labs but gives you a pre-lab take home assessment thats worth 25% of the grade and its identical to the in class assessment. Prelab lectures are so great and prepare you perfectly. Very willing to help and easy going. Would definitely take again, no reason to do bad in his lab
I dont care what any other review says. DO NOT TAKE HIM. Compared to other professors he is horrible. He lectures and is a nice guy, but does not care for you to pass. He is very monotone and too relaxed.
His tests are hard, but do able! Attend SI they help out so much for this course. Beach is specific and explains things perfectly. He doesn't always give out a study guide, but he will state what will be covered on the exam. His powerpoints aren't that specific so you have to be there for lecture!! You can pass if you do the work and pay attention.
Hes really monotone & relaxed so its hard to pay attention so highly recommend going to SI. 88.5 is an A & 78.5 is a B & so on in his class. Last 2 tests are hard so make sure you prepare for them (3rd is the hardest). He gives study guides for last 2 tests & lets you know whatll be on each exam. His tests are very straight forward(no tricks).
He's very monotone so lectures are boring. I couldn't bear to sit in there for an hour and 15 minutes listening to him so I stopped going to class. You can learn he material from the notes he posts and outside resources. Attendance, homework, and 4 tests make up your grade.
The exams he gives are very through, but come directly from his power points. I really enjoyed his course, but it is difficult, such as upper level bio classes are. I would no doubt take him again because there are no surprises on what will be on the exam.
Dr. Beach was an okay professor. His lectures are kind of boring, but they are what's going to be on the test. Attendance is graded. He's not the best when it comes to individual questions and one on one help. He needs to work on explaining things in a different way so everyone can understand the material, but SI sessions are a good resource!
I just feel like he doesn't care. I took his class knowing that this course is a tough course but explain how a person can make an A in the lecture but barely a C in the lab. Assessments are 85% of your grade & I thought it was weird how ever time I went in to take those assessments I was more than confident I did well. Other than that he's nice.
I wish I would've picked someone else for lab. I missed a lab which was my fault since I got my 3 labs mixed up. But the next day, I went to his office hour to check if I missed anything in class & I asked him if he passed anything out. He lied & said no. Next lab I found out from a student he passed out the take home exam. I made a 65.98 bc of him
He's a nice professor for class, but his lectures are boring. No textbook required and his exams come from the ppt. Tests are hard and he doesn't curve. He's not very good at explaining things during office hours but SI sessions was a life saver!!
Genetics is not a very hard class if you take good notes and study right. I got an A without ever opening the text book. The tests are pretty easy, not too specific, but you need to know what's up. Regarding Prof. Beach, he teaches directly from the power-points and has a very monotone voice. Overall, not a bad guy, but just boring as hell.
Wouldn't take him for lab again. The take home quizzes are similar to the actual test, but he's bad at explaining questions. Some of the assessments are hard and DOESN'T curve at all
I took his synchronous online class. Genetics is my major so I really loved his class. His tests only cover things covered in lectures. I never even opened the book. The tests are pretty straight forward; there weren't any trick questions. There were 5 tests. He said there were more so the content on each would be less and that helped when studying
His test are ridiculously hard! He makes a pretest before every test that does not give you a grade. He then has you take a mandatory practice test that you can take twice but it doesn't show you what you got wrong, only the grade. Then the test is 10x harder that you take once. The labs were fine but my grade suffered because of the tests.
Difficult topic covered in a fairly clear & concise way. Final grade consisted of five exams (NO CUMULATIVE FINAL), attendance, & Pearson homework. No dropped exams, but will drop 4 lowest homework. Honestly felt like he made this course to be as straightforward as it possibly could have been.
Boring lecture starts the class, but he'll re-answer questions if you zoned out. He's nice and laid back, but the pre and post lab quizzes are the hardest things for me. you complete notebooks in class as you go and turn them in at the end of each class to be graded. chill dude, take him, just wasnt that inspirational to me
He's not the worst professor, but many have said he's changed over the past few semesters (gotten harder). He refuses to give any sort of extra credit n does not let you retake any tests. Which was unfair because all other genetic professors let their students take their tests online n offered extra credit. All 5 tests are in person n thats ur grade
Dr. Beach is straightforward. He gives you everything straight. He's firm but fair. There are 4 exams total, no final or quizzes. There's homework due twice a week. He gives a study guide for every exam which, if you memorize the study guide, you'll do just fine on the exams. He grades attendance so show up (or get someone else to initial for you).
Don't take him. Very picky and a harsh grader for a 2nd-year Biology lab. It's as if he chooses grades on your lab notebooks out of a hat. Lab protocols can get confusing and clarification from him doesn't come easy. There are pre and post-lab quizzes, one midterm, one practical, and a final group project. Take Dr. Hayes instead..
Dr. Beach is very friendly. He will answer questions asked in class well and go over tests. However, the lecture content and what is required to be known is not clear. The presentations do not contain everything that needs to be known and he also seems to already expect us to know the content before introducing the unit based on how he teaches.
I was nervous to take Mr. Beach because of some of these ratings, but I have been pleasantly surprised. So far he seems stern but fair. He has been clear on what will be on the test and what wont be. The one thing to be wary of is that he makes everything sound easy and simple but the wording on the tests make the tests seem harder than they are.
Professor Beach is one of the rudest professors I have ever met. Replies to emails with only one word "yes/no" and makes you feel really inferior if you go to him for help. Does not respect his students. Talks down to you. Would not recommend.
If you're not a good test taker, I wouldn't recommend taking this professor! Quiz and Exams make the biggest part of your grade. Quiz and exams are on lockdown browser with webcam. The quizzes don't show you what you got wrong. you get two tries, so you have to guess, change it up, and hope for the best.
Dr. Beach lab is usually straight forward, but he is very hard on lab notebook. PLEASE, if you're unsure about what to put in your notebook, just ask him and be respect. Also, a printed copy of lab manual would help a TON, cuz you will have something to put extra information down. Be prepared for pre/post lab quizzes.
pre and post lab are super easy, he is very nice and wants you to ask stupid questions if you're confused, he's picky about the lab notebook and you have to do it after the lab in class but he's super chill would take him again
Very straightforward professor. As long as you put in a good amount of time studying you will be okay!
Dr. Beach can appear to be strict and scary to interact with at first. However, deep down, he can be a very caring and sweet person. He is very fair with his expectations, and he is very patient when you ask him to explain concepts to you. As long as you study consistently (9-12 hours a week) and go to his office hours, this class is an easy A.
Dr. Beach just looks scary and intimidating, but deep down, he is very nice and caring towards his students. As long as you follow directions in lab, you will do fine. If you still don't understand things in lab, he is very easily accessible outside of lab, so if you need help, you should go to office hours.
Genuinely the worst teacher I have ever experienced (and I love teachers). He is knowledgeable but cannot teach to save his life. I wouldn't recommend him to anyone. His test questions are written by a guy with dementia, in the most polite way possible.
Good professor overall, no complaints. He is very straight forward about what he wants to see and makes sure to steer you in the right direction. Lab notebook entries done in class which are very straight forward and not time consuming. If you listen to him and do what he expects, you'll be great.
Has the usual pre and post lab quizzes. They can be a little hard, though. He grades tough on notebooks but you can get the hang of it eventually. We have one group project at the end of the semester, and he grades hard on the draft. He's a little odd but you can definitely ask him questions. Not sure why his rating is so low, he's a fine professor
Posts lectures online. study the slides and incorporate the textbook/homework for the 4 exams. homework was tedious but most of its online. Gives study guide He sometimes just copies and paste homework questions into exams. No final. extra credit worth 1 percent of your grade. 88.5 is an A in the class. opt retake to replace exam instead of final
He was probably the worst professor ever!!! He took off 15 points from my lab notebook because i missed a period. He also gave pre and post lab quizzes that you had no idea what was on and even the lab handouts didn't help you on them. He also was just so critical about every technique that was used for the practical and the lab in general. Awful!!
Rewatch his lectures/record them yourself! They are a life-saver!! Very sarcastic and enjoys the material he is teaching. Make sure you go to class everyday and DO THE HW right after! My grade is entirely my fault and not Dr. Beach's at all! These are higher level courses, so they are in general more difficult!
Genetics is a material-heavy course, but this professor does his best to tell you what you need to know and what you don't! He records all lectures and assigns mastering after every lecture. If you stay on top of lectures and mastering, then his exams are really not difficult. He provides the opportunity to retake one exam at the end.
One of the best professors I've ever had. The study guides are exactly what you will see on the exam, and the homework is minimal and helpful. He posts the lecture slides online and you don't need to use the textbook at all. Just pay attention, ask questions if you get lost, and you'll get an A, easy. Attendance optional- but do not miss lecture.
I had a 95 in the class the whole semester then accidentally slept in the day of the final exam. I managed to get there with him still in the classroom but everyone else had left. He refused to let me take the exam. I received a 0 on the final, turning my A+ into a C automatically. What a prick. I guess he never cut it as a real researcher
After exam1 he made an announcement by threatening to give zero after some people did not properly follow webcam instructions. I understand the importance of following instructions but the announcement sounded like he owns us. I understand that its summer semester, and I understand the pace, but being rude is highly unprofessional.
Doesn't give you feedback or the opportunity to go back and look at homework or tests. Homework would be very helpful to look at again while studying for a test. Would also like to know what I missed on a test to understand where I went wrong.
BIOL 1107 worked really well for me was that the class was fully online. This flexibility made it much easier to balance both my job and school responsibilities. This course also provided a lot of helpful resources that made learning more manageable. The homework assignment were especially useful and prepared me well for the quizzes.
Biggest warning is the difference in verbiage from his instructional info and the exam questions. Very frustrating when you are mainly graded on exam scores. He has a lot of difficultly teaching the content. He's knowledgeable, so he assumes you know the info and doesn't teach like you are a student and learning the information for the first time.
I had Professor Beach for Genetics this summer semester; his lectures were very clear and parallel with the topics and context presented on the 8 exams and the weekly Pearson homework. Any dissatisfaction with my grades was my own fault.
not great, doesn't open your quizzes for you to see what you got wrong or the opportunity to. lecture heavy and confusing quiz questions to throw you off. the content itself is hard so you have to study hard for a good grade on top of being challenged
