Very cool teacher. His test are hard but if you pay attention, you should get a B. I never read the text that much.
As shown, he is not popular. But what has popularity to do with teaching. We are here to learn and not to be entertained.
I hated this man so much!!!he scared the absoulte crap outta me, he also flirted with the girls to much. do WHATEVER TO GET OUT OF THIS EVIL MANS EVIL CLASS!!
Very flirty with girls. Nice dirty sense of humor. May seem inappropriate at times for the faint of heart.
I feel sorry for this teacher, that he is so twisted in his mind. He once was pretending to be Jesus in class, which was very offensive to me. He curses way to much. he knows his subject well but I found him disturbing. Especially while taking tests.
I feel sorry, that he is so twisted "Okay I think you do not no how to take him, I sorry for you too" I think Jesus has nothing to do with DeVivo Mike just let him belives what he belives. To grade a teacher is not easy I think he was okay End Am
Geography lives amen? I agree, he favors some girls in class. And he does swear a lot when he rips his maps.
This was probably the hardest class I've ever taken in my life...and it's "friggin' geography" as he'd say. So it shouldn't be that hard. An all-around funny guy, just keep an open mind, and study your ass off...you might get a B.
If you take cultural geography, it's easy. Some hate him b/c he flirts with girls and the way he can make you feel stupid. He's smart, very educated. despite his personality, i learned a lot. Don't bother to read the chapters, off topic lectures in class.
he is one of those teachers who likes to trick you
i JUST hated this man so much, whatever u do try to get out of his class. i know he made my life like hell!!!!!
I think that he is a great teacher. People rag on him because he is not one of these 70 year old hags who teach in the same monotone way your grandmother would. Hi knows his subject very well and is entertaining as well.
He is an awesome teacher!! He has a great sense of humor and he's not like your everyday monotone teacher, which is awesome!! Keep on teaching DeVivo!
I think he is fair,if you him, he is great let him live. "Geography Lives Amen" don't we all have a passion for somenthing? I do...
I hate him, he is a very annoying man. He spends the first 20 mins of class asking what everyone did that weekend. Do not take him, I love culture but learned very little from him except about the trips he had taken.
This class was supposed to be Geography of Michigan, he made it into sociology of Grand Rapids. This was the worst class I ever took during my two years at CC. He is not organized. I learned nothing. He doesn't grade fair either. DON'T TAKE HIS CLASS!!!!
Come he is not so bad, he make the class fun and if you don't study than it's you fault. Some student don't care about being asked about the weekend, I like being asked and well he is just different than other teachers. Geography lives Amen!
What's up with all these people dissin Devivo? Obviously all the haters are the outcasts who don't like class to be fun. Devivo has a huge passion for geography. I highly recommend him. Geography lives, amen?
I cant stand this man! I have never had a problem with communicating with a teach in college as much as I have with this man. Talk about being a slacker teacher, I have half a mind to talk to the department head about his poor grading and "teachings&
He isn't that bad he is a teacher like any other teacher who just try to teach us. If we will learn than we can allways learn. So before you grade a teacher think!Geography Lives Amen!I learned a lot.
This is the worst man ever. I did not learn anything while being in this class and it sucks that he is the only Geography professor here. He deserves to be fired.
If you dont do good in his class it is because you are stupid. Dont take it out on the teacher because you are an idiot.Devivo is probably one of the best teachers in the school. If you study and listen in class you should at least get a B.Geo LIVES AMEN!!
He was Never on time! And he did do a lot of annoying things.
devivo can be a very nice professor if he devotes a little bit more passion to his teaching. he loves GE and he does a fairly good job in teaching us about it. i thnk overoll he is a good teacher who cares!
Once a week class ended up not meeting 3 times (once b/c he didn't show). Always late. Lazy in my opinion, but he does love his Geography. Didn't return phone calls or emails about having to reschedule a test. Pissed me off. Avoid!!!
This guy is alright, biggest nose i have ever seen. He's pretty funny and he loves geography! His test suck, but he does tell you what to study...kind of. Geography Lives, Amen! Not!
wow, what a crazy man. he's fun but the class is not. tests are ridiculous and he is incredibly uncaring. last i knew he was the only one teaching this class, so take it somewhere else!
If you drink Bud light you are screwed, other than that he is a great teacher. One of the best classes I have takin. His classes are not easy, but he makes them fun. Geography lives. Amen.
In my opinion one of the best teachers I have ever had. He is super funny , and knows what he is talking about. I think he is hot too.Geography Lives, Amen.
devivo is very unique! he has his own way of teaching which can be good and bad. but overall, i think he makes his class enjoyable most of the time. i think he should be on time for his classes though. i like him and he does care for his students!!!
mr devivo is a fun person! i personally think that if you want to learn you will definitely learn from his class. i remember that i laughed a great deal in his class. i also learned so much more than i expected to in any GE class.
Easy to listen to, easy to learn from. Challenging, but extra effort pays off. Study the book for main ideas and lecture notes for details. Straightforward class; digressive lectures. Pay attention or fall behind.
He really is a hard professor, you have to study the book, and even then good luck. Be prepared to stay awake in class, he will kick you out if you don't. Lectures are boring, and if you have any questions come to him the day before a test, not the day of
Devivo is cool. Kinda weird, but cool. I quote him saying: "Do da shobby doo duh."
you will get out of this class only what you want to. (it is possible to pass and not learn anything; but, we do not go to college to remain stupid do we?) best lecturer i've heard, keeps a dry subject a bit more interesting.
He is rude and very stupid in the area of social skills. He says one thing then he does another. He is out to fail you!!!! Buyer BEWARE!!!!! And dont even think about taking the telecourse you will really fail!!!
I couldn't stand the guy! I thought he was rude and intimidating. His tests were super detailed and I often didn't learn anything substantial from the in and out of class work . Don't take him if you can help it, unless you are a science wizz.
Strange guy. Doesn't listen to students much.
Geography is a class in which an instructor must give you some direction. It is impossible to memorize 2-3 chapters and take a test on it. DeVivo, however, wants his students to memorize every chapter. He gives notes which barely reflect any ? on an exam. Avoid at all costs, spare your GPA!
Seriously, do not take GE 135 telecourse for DeVivo! Reading and memorizing 4, 5, or even 6 chapters at times for one test is guaranteed! Many questions on the exam will shock you, making you wonder why the professor has them on the test. Can't study every detail when having 200-250 pgs to read.
Geography Lives Amen!!!!!!
GE 135 telecourse. he doesnt respond to emails you send, he has the hardest course you will ever take, expects way to much. i studied 2 hours a day and still had to drop the class.
This guy is an idiot. I learned nothing. I pretty much have all A's yet I received a D from this jackass. I got 90's on all tests and papers. Go figure. When I confronted him he had no answers for me.
He's well-informed and makes Geography more interesting than most professors but my compliment ends there. He does a bad job of preparing you for tests. The labs are tedious...busy work. He's also got his favorite students. Don't bother take'n his class.
Classes were interesting and fun. Tests were very hard, study as much as possible!!!
Took this class as a telecourse. The syllabus provided did not coincide with the reading assignments and tests; any attempts to resolve this issue was futile. Tests were poorly structured. AVOID this instructor!
This instructor can't teach. He gives notes which barely reflect anything and expects his students to memorize the text. I wouldn't recommend this guy for anything.
devivo,he is a....very funny guy. although he seems not care for his students. believe me i think he loves you all. just study harder for your own sake. you will do fine. let him know that you are loving his lecture and geography lives! amen!
awesome teacher!

This guy made you look forward to getting up and coming to class. He really makes you apply yourself, but does so in a fun way. Tests are difficult, but if you read and attend class you're fine.
Does not care about the student at all. A waste of $$ to go to class and watch videos all the time. I learned nothing in his class, he doesn't set you up to do well. test are VERY hard and the exam preview is no good (to general.) Do not take this course with Devivo!
Worst class ever! Learned nothing! You better suck up or your in trouble.
When it come to personality, I like Mr Devivo but what don't get is his teaching. I personally did not learn anythings from his class. I don't know wheather everyone feel the same or that is just me. One thing that we students need to remmeber is that different people learn better in different enviropment. may other people like is teaching.
One of the worst teachers i have ever had in my life. .....
These classes were wonderful. It was a lot of fun to be in both of the classes together. DeVivo is tough, but if you pay attention in class and read the book you will succeed. You will enjoy the class if you put your heart into it. Just remember Geography Lives AMEN!!!
Geography lives Amen-probably one of the most lame things i have ever heard in my life, dont believe that this class is fun.....its PURE EVIL!!!!!!
Best teacher ever!!!! Hes interested in his students, hes fun, and he will do what it takes to make sure you pass as long as you try. His class is hard, but he keeps it interesting and gives you a lot of chances to improve. Plus hes really nice. I definately reccomend him. Geography Lives, Amen!!!!
if you come to class ready to learn and particapate you will enjoy this class. sucking up does not hurt and he is very sexy (makes it hard to pay attention). read the book and come to class, you'll be fine.
I think this class is going to be fun. He is very precise and has a strong voice which defintely makes me tune in.
This is the only class I like. It requires you to do a lot of work outside of clas...but you definetly will enjoy it. Just don't ever say you cut up your spagetti.
Pure evil is all i have to say about this man...
Incredible teacher if you're there to learn, not just to sit back and pass. Those interested in an education, you'll love him. He loves what he teaches and that makes a difference. Would definitely reccommend him. Didn't think class was too hard, it's less busy work and more thinking work which is good if that's what you're interested in.
I like him as a teacher his voice changes pitch and helps keep me awake. this guy knows what he is talking about since he has been everywhere. he loves what he teaches and it shows read the book and you should do fine. map tests are a little odd the way they are laid out but you will get the hang of them. he loves to have fun in class.
this guy rocks!!! but you have to try, do not take any of his classes if all you are looking for is an easy A. but he is very helpful and his classes are interesting. you must read the text.
Worst teacher at GRCC, i have had really good teachers here but this wasnt a good or fun class. I got to catch up on my sleep in this class. plus i think this man is a little psycho.
This man is intelligent and funny (and hot!) Just put forth an effort and you will get a decent grade.
I LOVE DEVIVO. I HONESTLY AGREED WITH THE PERSON. HE IS HOT!! FOR HIS AGE, HE IS HOT!!!!HIS VOICE AND HIS KNOWLEDGE. I HAVE TO SAY THAT YOU NEED TO KNOW WHAT YOU ARE GETTING INTO... THIS MAN IS FUN IF YOU GET TO KNOW HIM. I LOVE DEVIVO!
These girls who think he is hot obviously have no sense in what is hot and what is NOT..please dont believe the last rating he is soo not hot what so ever! maybe if Brad Pitt was the teacher then we can talk about being hot!
He is an excellent teacher and always willing to assist. He is expects what is requ but is also fair.
Discluding any exaggerations, this teacher is awful. His teaching methods are very vague and appear lazy; he overwhelms you at times to seem as though he is actually teaching. Be cautious of this one if you like clarity and an appropiate college professor.

He is strange. His exams are based on lecture so be prepared to write a lot of notes, and write quickly because he doesn't tell you what's going to be on the exam. You kind of have to guess. Overall the class is tough, but somehow you may end up with a good grade even if you don't do particularly well on the exams. Read ALL the material.
He's a really cool prof, the labs can be hard, but tests seem easier than everything after all the hard work. His summer class was super fun and I'd take him again if I ever had the opportunity. He made class really fun and enjoyable- something new to most geography classes :)
Very poor. Turns on a movie every class period and then just leaves for the duration. Doesn't put any effort into his teaching whatsoever and then makes you come across as an idiot when you have questions.
De Vivo is a very entertaining prof. However, he is very tough when it comes to grading. I have been in two of his classes and always end up getting a "B". Give him a try, some people hate him, others love him.
hated the man, loved the subject, still do. be prepared to spend more time than necessary for only a decent grade.
HORRIBLE!!! DO NOT TAKE!!! Studied very hard, and performed well, but he gave me a C simply b/c he didn't like me. Very BIASED teacher, trust me on this one, STAT AWAY!!!
I enjoyed this class, the tests are hard you need to study. DeVivo is easy to get along with if he likes you. He has traveled a lot and knows his****, I found the videos interesting and the labs just as fun.
he has very hard tests that cover stuff that is of non importance.
Better take damn good notes, and heres something i wish someone told me. He has extra credit in his sylabis but he doesnt say anything about it til the due day! YOU WANT TO DO THESE! The classes are not bad, he has quite a personality, but the tests blow me away. I read/studied for 8 hours for one test once and got a 40/50! There are map tests th
I personally liked the materials, but the professor lacked the ability to present it to the student in clear cut terms. His punctuality and attendance was poor, and his attitude wasnt quite what i paid tuition for. I recommend taking another class for you science credit, this one will bring your GPA down. Good Luck
Good teacher but when the whole class might not get something he will still move on without explaining it. Tests are pretty hard if you dont grasp the subject which is often.
This class could have been a very intresting one, but like others I agree with there comments. Try someone else if possible.
He is a jerk.Do not take ur class if u r easily offended b/c he will offend u.He is ****,****,and annoying. His tests are impossible and his personality is inadequate to teaching.DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS WITH HIM
He has a silly personality and odd sense of humor. Some people can be offended by him or think he is tough, just don't be a big baby about it. This is a hard class only if you are lazy. You can do well if you do things right.
Great teacher. His class is alot of fun. Much different than any class I have ever taken. Pay attention to lecture and do lab book and tests will be easy
was a very hard class, you had to do actually read the textbook and study the material in order to pass the class, lab points were essential
Other than missing 9 classes in one semester, DeVivo does know his stuff. I believe his attendance policy is absurd. You can miss 3 classes, but he can miss 9? His language is not appropriate for the classroom, adults or not, and seems to have favorites. Overall, when he was there, I learned a decent amount. On a lighter note, he has good stories.
Devivo is awesome! Yet he has no business being a teacher. He should just stick to traveling the world. He was gone a good month of the semester, depends on syllabus to answer anyone's questions about the class, many of his test questions were not found in the text or in his lectures. If you struggle with social studies courses DO NOT HAVE HIM!
DeVivo is a love him or hate him kinda prof. But I don't know what all these people are talking about in regards to his tests. If you pass all the tests and do all the labs, its easy to get a good grade. Some people are offended by his language but they need to get over it. College students are adults and can handle "bad words" Get over it.
Not to fond of him, he knows his stuff, but not to good at teaching it.
Pretty good guy...class is well laid out in the syllabus.
prof. devivo's class is tough. lots of reading, 5 tests, midterm and field trip. Awesome guy. truly genuine guy. I admit this is a tough class, but this is college not highschool. If i can pass it, you can. just study and not have any electronical devices out. Geography Lives. Amen
Wears the shortest shorts. Uses the same stupid jokes everyday. Things he is funny but he is not. Most of your notes are from the bok because Devivo talks about his trips around the world
Okay guy. Not a very good teacher. His lectures rarely have anything to do with the tests. He's not very clear when it comes to what is going to be on the tests either. Also seems like he favored certain students.
mr devivo is a good guy. he is an understanding person and yeah his class is tough but this is college! take his course for a science class. he is really swell! geography lives!
DeVivo's class was time consuming! If you are willing to complete all labs and read, it's possible to do well. Don't be discouraged by all the negative comments. Also, he lives by the syllabus so make sure you read it all the way through.
This guy is awesome! That's about it because what he talks about in his lectures is on the test, but most of the other test questions are pretty random. He shows pointless flims, but overall he's not a good teacher. He is a good time though
If you want to go to class with some opinions just leave them at the door, with this teacher you are ALWAYS wrong, if you can even get a word in. He make inappropraite jokes and is very obnoxious. He clearly has favorites in the class and if he doesn't like you then he REALLY doesnt like you. Basically his class is pointless and you dont learn much
Devivo is by far the WORST instructor I have ever had. This is an introductory course and he grades it as though it is a graduate course. The class sounds fun, and there is a lot to learn, but Devivo grades ridiculously tough and does very little teaching. There are long papers and extremely hard tests. YOU WILL NOT GET AN "A" IN THIS COURSE!!
All these people crying need to suck it up. DeVivo knows his crap. Yeah his class is pretty difficult, but he's been the only teacher throughout my schooling career that could keep my attention. I like him, he's a straight forward and funny guy. You actually learn in this class. Tests are hard, but if you study what he tells you to, you'll do well.
Is is a story teller, and thats about it. What he lectures on is rarely on the tests. Videos are old and pointless. Use his study guide to study for test, very important! My friend did and pulled through with an "A." unfortunately he is the only Geography prof.
He LIVES by the syllabus, and the rules are very clear. At first I did not like him and the tests were very hard. But by the end of the semester I was fine with him. Study the items he gives you for the exam reviews and you will do well. The 1800 word mid term paper sucked!Cool stories and can hold your attention. Geography Lives!
For all of the people complaining that the class is hard: SUCK IT UP. ITS COLLEGE. This isn't high school. You should expect to read the text and take notes and study. DeVivos class is easy if you do the labs and study. God forbid you actually put work in to a class and read the syllabus. I was able to get an A and I can't stand Geography.
very hard to understand
nice to look at but hard to understand.
He's a hard prof, but if you work hard, READ the text (not skim, but actully sit down and read it), and ask him questions in class you will get a good grade. I studied an hour per test and ended up with an A. Tests are all multiple choice, which is nice. I learned a lot from him and plan on taking more of his classes. GEOGRAPHY LIVES!!
He is a horrible teacher. He gave me a failing grade for not using a pencil even though he never told me. When i confronted him about it seeking a second chance he responded by saying "stop winning" and he'll see me next week in class. He dont even care he makes things harder then it has to be. when your looking for a respectful teacher he isn't.
Awesome teacher! So much fun! Loved every second of it!
Class is not easy, but isn't super difficult either. Prof. DeVivo gets a bad rap due to the fact he doesn't give much leeway on work and attendance. That said, If you read the text(At least sometimes) and complete the labs you'll be fine. Oh and make sure and READ the syllabus. And go on the field trip, unless you want TWO 1800 word papers to do..
Very fair, incredible stories you cant get from a textbook, true passion for geography and is very helpful when you take the time to ask. If you are lazy you wont pass, this is a university level class, if you are going onto a 4 yr college, get used to it. If you want to put in the effort and be rewarded for it fairly then take this class.
Very difficult. He is not a good professor
He was okay. He tells you upfront that he's giving you a harvard education for a cc price so he will treat you like a university student. There's a good load of assignments and little study time for tests, but it's not impossible. If you just try your best you'll come out with a B+. Also a decent sence of humor.
He had an interesting class. The test are difficult and worded weird but if you read the text, and trust me you'll have to, you'll be fine. Not too much work but def not a slack course. I thought he was an entertaining guy though a bit eccentric. All in all an easy A if you try.
Online course w/ concise syllabus. Excellent study guide outlined all chapters- very helpful. Read study guide outline, skim chapters, do review questions, watch videos, plan for two tests at Assessment Center, do book review at end. Do assignments how he wants them. You'll get 100% on assignments. Tests are easy- multiple choice off study guide.
Took him for GE 135 Online. Geography is my minor, so the hardness of this class can vary on your knowledge level. Book is a must for the assignments. Prof. is helpful and answers any questions within 1 to 2 days. If you know your stuff this class shouldn't be a GPA Killer.
Many people dropped from class if you expect to pass be ready to memorize ever country in the world (literally) and reading the chapters thoroughly. MAKE SURE YOU DO THE EXTRA CREDIT! some of it is due early in the semester before you even realize how much you are going to need it
I took a geography course thinking it would be easier than chem and bio, but it wasn't, and DeVivo didn't help the cause either. He was constantly rude and could care less about his students. He has high expectations that are almost impossible to reach. If you don't understand something, he tells you to drop the class.
This class is worthless. I should have dropped the day I met that guy. He offers little help and shows up late for class all the time. It should be a 335 class, not a 135 class.
Prof. Devivo tells you what he wants, and if you do it, you will get a good grade. Maybe you shouldn't take him if you don't have knowledge of Geography, but I don't find him to be to hard. Do what he asks. Get at least 80 on the two test and you should get an A. GE 210 same format as 135, just based on Cultural Concepts.
Great teacher, really knows what he is talking about and has a lot of experience! he is upfront about the workload, and there is a lot. do not take this class if you hate doing work and dont go to class.exams are easy, the q's right from the study guide, and the map quizzes arent hard its just memorizing. a very fun prof, wants you to do well!
I liked this class. He is a good professor. It you don't like him it must be because you don't actually want to learn. Lot of work but gets you ready for a 4yr school, which is what I think community colleges are for. Will do fine as long as you pay attention and do homework correctly.
This class is a lot of work. It's worth it, though, because you learn a lot. He grades fairly, but make sure you put 110% into every project because if you get a grade lower than 50% on anything you will fail the class regardless of your other grades. I am almost a different person after this class. It's very informing.
Did not care for his teaching style at all. I thinking having a mandatory word count on every assignment is a little childish. I hope to never take another class with this professor.
He never interacted with students except when expressly requested by email. Also, every email was prefaced with the line, "Because I'm such a nice guy." If he were truly a nice guy, and a true educator, he would have actually inspired students to learn. This is the most disappointing class I have ever taken at GRCC. A complete waste of money.
Teacher didn't clearly express what he wanted. His syllabus said two completely different things when regarding an assignment causing much confusion. Syllabus is scattered and hard to read and understand. Takes an introductory class way to seriously. It was very difficult to understand when everything was due because of how he had it set up.
Took class condensed online. As long as you do the correct word count for assignments and turn them in on time you are gold. Tests are maps, some detailed book stuff, and word for word out of the study guide (so get it). People who are complaining really need to get real. This is college. Easy A if you just follow directions and do as your asked.
Really is a university level course at a Community College. Took in the Summer, 5 week long 4 credit lab. You WILL spend at least 5-10 hours a week on homework if you plan on passing. Prof. Devivo is a good professor, humorous and teaches in a way that keeps you engaged. He swears, and those easily offend or lazy need not apply.
I took this as an online class. It is super easy. If you turn in the essays with the correct word count then you get full credit. The tests were based on some video clips, maps, and exact questions from study guide so as long as you review a bit you should pass. Didn't learn a whole lot but easy class overall.
Welcome to real life, kids. Those who struggle in this course are those who want to be high school hand fed at the community college level. DeVivo is a university level professor and teaches as such. Syllabus plainly lays out due dates for the entire semester from day one. Follow directions, do work, get a good grade
He is SUPER HARD. I'm an A student w/o even studying, yet I had to work my tail off to even get the concepts. The way he talks (not his expectations) is so confusing and his tests are extremely intense. In addition, he's not that helpful. It's like if you're not destined to get a B+ or more, then he doesn't care about you. I wouldn't take him again
I am just finishing this class as an online course. When I first read the syllabus I considered dropping. Honestly, his wording makes things seem a lot harder than they are. As long as you have the right word count you are golden, and he gives you everything on the test. This class is an easy A, unless you are incredibly lazy.
Wonderful teacher! Very funny! Very fun. He is serious about his class so if you expect to skate by, it's not happening. You have to pay attention and do work. But you can do it! He is really doing people a favor by scaring you at first b/c if you don't expect to do the work and come to class then you wont do well and he wants everyone to succeed.
I am currently taking this course online. This class is easy if you do the work. As long as you follow his requirements, you can get an A easily. The one thing that turns me off to the class is the prof. He is kind of an ass... Everytime I have emailed him so far, his responses are rude and speaks to me as if I am a child. Interesting class though.
This is by far a 4 year university work load. However, is that not what you are prepping for? Professor was helpful at all times. Do what is assigned and you will get a good grade. I took this class online and had no trouble getting responses from the professor. His syllabus was clear and to the point.
Out of all of my years of going to school I have never met someone as unprofessional as he is. Not only are his communication skills terrible, but he is unreasonable and rude. His syllabus is ridiculous and the directions on some of his labs do not make any sense. I'd rather have a bird teach me this class then this guy.
Hands down worse professor I have ever had. He is just a rude person who doesn't want to help you. The person below me did a perfect job of defining him. His syllabus is rude, and he doesn't really care if you get a failing grade or not. Honestly, he could care less about his students. Very unfortunate CC has a professor like this.
The absolute worst professor or teacher I have ever had. Never take his class. Rude, unclear, and arrogant.
Challenging prof! Take if interested, in world topics. Not a "main stream prof" in a good way. I found him very thought provoking. Overall, tough, but a great thought provoker (love or hate him).
An all-around horrible, awful, inefficient teacher. Avoid his classes if you can.
Probably the worst and most unreasonable professor I've ever had, but hey, props to him for wearing shorts to class every day in the winter time. Geography lives no longer!
Devivo was a tool, and his syllabus made it sound like he never wanted to hear from you. But, his outline of the class was very clear. The class required a ton of writing, but as long as you turn things in on time, with the required word count, and did decent on the exams.. its an easy A.
He requires wayyyyyy too much writing for such stupid things. The book you have to read (the chapter book not the textbook) is the most boring book I've ever read, ever! It's just awful. You have to read way too much at a time and write about it after but it's so boring you instantly forget what you read! I'd avoid him! Too much writing!
Took online. Easy class just pay close attention to his guidelines and your word count on discussions and tests and you will be fine.
I don't understand the negative reviews. Very easy class. Get to the minimum word count ALWAYS and it's a very easy A. All assignments are very clear and you will always have enough to write about. One of the best! Very interested in what he's teaching and very structured online class.
Way too much expected for a 132 level science class. Extremely rude prof that would often drop the f-bomb. I will say that he is a very intelligent man, but it seemed like his teaching style was very self edifying. His grading seemed a bit unreasonable, and he put way too much focus on following directions. One of the worst teachers I've had.
This was the best professor I ever had. Helped shape my life, and to see and understand the world from many different perspectives. He seems gruff on the outside, but his arrogance, is confidence. He won't suffer fools, a serious student will learn much, in and out of the classroom later in life. Lucky if you have a class with this Professor.
He completely reworked structure of the course, its incredibly improved. F13 heaping coursework, in-person exams, only readings from Diversity Amid Globalization. W14 changed to fully online coursework, emailed essays as exams, readings from Half the Sky, mandatory attendance at GRCCs Race, Ethnicity and Identity Conference. 10/10 would recommend
Turns out this guy is stern but fair I guess. Going to this class is the worst part of my day. He practically just yells information (it is accurate and relevant) in your face and expects that everyone just magically understands it. His tests are not easy. Feels like he is speaking down to you. I think this guys should have stuck to the Marines...
I took this class online. It was a VERY easy A as long as you followed the directions. Post once a week and make sure to reach the word count. The two exams consist of ten questions that are not the easiest but definitely doable. The class is not time consuming. He always emailed me back quickly and was always willing to cooperate. I recommend.
For the love of everyone that is living and breathing, do not, and I repeat, do not take any classes with this fool. He's very inappropriate, has a bad habit of shouting for absolutely no reason out of nowhere, and beyond his syllabus, is very unclear when actually presenting and trying to teach students content. Class is brutal.
The 7-week online section of this class has been my favorite class so far in my academic career. He gave me full credit for all discussion boards and exams, which is not usual for me. He makes you read a book, but i quickly realized that you can wiki it and be good. The exams were a little time consuming. TO pass, follow the word count and ur good
Devivo is absolutely a tough professor, but if you put in effort, and ESPECIALLY if you go in to his office hours, he is extremely helpful. He doesn't take crap. Get on his good side (without brown nosing--just care about doing well in the class) and he will help not only in his class, but afterwards with job or grad school applications.
At the beginning of the semester I was very optimistic about DeVivo's class. However, that optimism evaporated on by the third week. The lectures had very little to do with the tests. Read the text book or you will have no chance for the tests. I would never take another class with him.
While it is improved compared to how this online class used to be, the 2 exams and the ridiculous penalties caused me to drop the class. 10 questions per exam, each requiring 400 words a piece. No thank you. He expected us to set aside 3 weeks for the exam. Some of us don't have time like that to set aside.
It's a fair class. You read the book and take the exam, pretty simple layout overall.
Devivo is a good professor. What he says is what he expects on the assignments. As long as you do the work you for labs, discussion boards, and papers you will easily pass this class even with failing exam scores. Everything he says in lecture is on the tests, its just though he might not spend alot of time on a topic. Take good notes, and READ.
He has a blunt personality, kind of like a military guy. Wears shorts and sunglasses in the winter. He will shout in class to keep you awakeexplain material. A little bit of studying is needed to keep up with the 4 or so multiple choice exams that he has throughout the semester. Would NOT recommend him overall.
This class ended up being a Women's Studies course instead of world geography. Reading a book about assault in the third world was assigned and many of the weekly discussions were based on that premise. The main book was only used to complete the tests, which were 4000 word minimum essays.
I took his online class and these reviews are so shocking. GE 135 is not hard. He straight up tells you all of the requirements. As long as you follow his word count, you will get an A.
I'm pretty sure he is the only professor that teaches Geography at GRCC. He was the WORST professor ever, he didn't help the students at all. He was EXTREMELY RUDE. If you didn't understand something, he would tell you to go outside and shoot yourself. We all "strongly disliked" him.
The subject matter and homework load is what is difficult in this class. There is NO way this should be a 100 level class. I have never felt so hopeless. Makes Algebra look tame. I hate algebra. My wife is a Phi Theta Kappa honor student and also received a D. There needs to be pre requisites for this class. As for Dr. DeVivo, I like him.
This was honestly the hardest class I have ever taken. You have to do A LOT of reading and long essay questions. If you don't like to read and are bad at essay questions AVOID THIS CLASS. Out of all my classes, I received the worst grade in this one. Overall I did not enjoy this class but Professor Devivo is a nice guy and will help you if needed.
His homework assignments are long, his tests are long, but he gives you all the work due and when its due at the beginning of the semester so there is no reason you couldnt get your work done, he also is extremely quick to respond to any questions you have. But his instructions are pretty clear
There's a TON of reading in this class, and essays that reflect it. Geography in this class is not regions or maps, but more of social problems, like human trafficking, or water deprivation and/pollution. It's actually very interesting, but it does take time.
Lots of work, but automatic A, or close to it, if you MEET the WORD REQUIREMENTS! That's what the essays, discussions, and exam essays are on. There are 2 exams where 10 questions need to be answered with 400 words each, so get started right away.
Took this class online, overall it was okay. Exams and lecture reflections are very very time consuming. There is a lot of work to be done, but if you complete it all you will get an A.
This class was very difficult. Professor Devivo was helpful when it came to giving extra time for assignments but it did little to help my grade. I couldn't learn from his teaching. The expectations are a bit high but the problem is that the exams cover too much. You'll be expected to memorize a lot of locations ( cities ) and terms.
Everything was fine with the course until the last normal assignment. I felt I was being punished for not being able to attend a lecture. My 400-word commentary turned into a 2400 Essay over 70+ pages of reading material. If you don't follow every direction and do exactly what he wants you will be miserable. Do what he asks perfectly, and its an A.
Expect tons and tons of homework. Essays are extremely long, and require lot's of time. If you don't do your homework you won't pass. You're basically teaching yourself based on the book. Not many tests but you have to know everything to pass! He's a chill and loud proff, great personality but the class itself is hard and very confusing.
He assigns a lot of work and its graded on completion so don't stress over correctness, COMPLETE IT! He's a lot more lenient than he stresses on his syllabus. I turned in a lot of late work. The test are really hard, I failed each one. As long as you do all the assignments and the bonus you'll pass with a B even if you fail every test. Good Luck!
Few papers that are graded very heavily on words not actual content. Very disappointed in the overall class. Would not sign up for it again with him as instructor. He is on his high horse throughout the class.
He is a good instructor. Just make sure that you follow the syllabus correctly and you will do fine in the course
He's a really nice guy and knows literally EVERYTHING about his subject. Because of this he expects a ton from you. The homework work load is outrageous. I spent upwards of 6 hours on some of his assignments that were due within a day. His tests don't reflect the work you learn in class. Don't take him. It's actually rediculous.
I like essays but not 2-3 a week on minor parts of tons of reading. I've taken 400-level classes and this was one of my hardest. Not a good thing. He gives no personal feedback, so your writing won't improve. His instructions are walls of text where every sentence ends with "you will get no credit." It feels really condescending and disrespectful.
This guy is the worst. He is unaccessible, has very rigid requirements for everything, and not only are the requirements difficult to understand- if you fail to do them HIS way, you will fail the class. Super arrogant, should not be teaching. Avoid this class at all costs. NOT WORTH IT.
This class was terrible. He spent half the time talking about his safari's in Africa and is terrible at actually explaining the material. IF he answers a question it is vague and seems deliberately like he's insulting your intelligence. Get ready to memorize the entire book in order to pass his terribly worded tests.
He is the worst I got an A in the class, but barely. Every single thing mentioned in these reviews is true. He is a horrible human being. AVOID AT ALL COSTS. Threatened to fail me when I asked for feedback on an essay (wasn't challenging the grade, needed to know what I did wrong). WORST PROFESSOR EVER SUBJECT MATTER ISN'T WORTH IT GO TO A DIFF CC.
Dr. DeVivo expects your best work and pushes you to excel. Many think he is too hard, but for those who put in the effort he makes it worth your while. DeVivo is now a close friend and mentor, I am pursuing a geography degree, and was able to travel to San Diego for a conference last May on the school's tab. The hard work is well worth it.
You will work for your grade in this class! Dr. DeVivo has a great class but it's alot of work. This was a summer online class so a paper was due once or twice a week, plus reading, plus videos to watch. If you're serious about geography, he's the professor for you. If you put in the time, he'll help you go places! He knows his stuff!
I wouldn't recommend this prof. Your can lose grade points from simple things like looking at your phone in the classroom after class hours or smelling too strongly of tobacco or perfume. It is also extremely hard to gain back points. He has a bully sense of humor and the exam has little to do with his class discussions. There are many papers too.
DeVivo comes off as very strict in the syllabus, but in class is sarcastic and humorous. I think he is aware that the content of the course is difficult, which is why nearly everything other than tests is based on completion. The course is set up so you will make it out with a B maybe a bit less, as long as you do all of the assignments in full.
In the World Geography online course, the essays assigned by Professor DeVivo (there are 32 essays total, some 400 word, others 600 word, and one 2,500 word) are often questions which could be answered completely within one or two sentences. This makes the work overly tedious and needlessly time-consuming.
The amount of writing for this class is absolutely ridiculous. I am fairy certain that he doesn't even read them. This is considering on one of my discussions I just listed things for about half the required number of words and still received full credit. The grading scale is awful. 1 point 1 percentage of your grade. Impossible to get 100%
This is a super hard class, one of the hardest I've taken in college so far. This class will teach you to follow directions much closer. He is very strict on directions and how he wants things done. Be prepared for multiple essays a week, and be prepared to follow directions. You will pass if you don't cut corners.
I took his online GE 135 course and i passed with a "B". He does give a lot of work but if you do it and meet all the word requirement then you will pass, just don't be lazy. The entire course is all papers and that's it but its fine as long as you complete everything. I would take again. MEET THE WORD REQUIREMENT FOR EVERYTHING AND YOU WILL BE FIN
Condensed class online so I knew it would be more than the usual workload but holy moly, this was ridiculous. There is no way he could have read everything that was submitted, NO feedback on anything.
I am absolutely appalled at the amount of work this prof gives out, do not take this class if you are a full time student, a parent, or anyone who wants to live a comfortable life. I have never had such a work heavy, and time wasting class. Yet it is required for my degree. He may be a good man, but online this class is absurd. Also, no feedback.
Class is out of 100 points, based on all lengthy writing assignments(3 are over 3000 words) He doesn't give feedback for taking pts off (each pt1% of grade) Miss class? You have to write a 500 word summary by next class or he deducts 2 pts. 6 discussion boards, 1 exam, book to read, 2 projects & presentation. Lectures suck Stories about his life
Sheer amount of work and time and man hours for this class is ridiculous. Text needed for class was different than the text that I was directed to when I signed up for class, with no heads-up that it had changed until after the first week of class. Felt like he hired us to write his biography instead of teaching us in an effective way.
Way too much homework. This professor acts like his students are not taking any other courses and gives out huge essays almost every week. This professor by far is the worst I have ever had.
Worst professor ever. When it comes to teaching the class I feel like I'm not learning anything. He tells stories about his life and then expects you to answer exam questions based on his stories. Not to mention his stories aren't related to the topics. Papers are huge with him and once turned in he doesn't give feed back on what you did wrong.
GOOD LUCK. The amount of homework he gives is absolutely insane. My class had no tests or exams, just essays ranging anywhere from 400-2,200 words. For me, the most frustrating part is that none of his content is original and you're basically doing his job for him. No feedback and no rubrics. It's all a guessing game. Avoid this class at all costs.
Dropped me by an entire letter grade over a small technicality in his syllabus. Had nothing to do with the actual written essay itself. I would never take a class by this professor again. Honestly reflects poorly on GRCC that hes the head of the department.
I took devivo online and its a brutal class. Stay away from ge 135 online if you can because you will have to write over 14000 words for the total semester on stuff that is ridiculous. If you are transferring take this class at your four year institution if at all possible. I hate geography even more after this class.
This class was one of the worst I've ever had. It is close to impossible to get an A. He is very biased and makes it known. His lectures have no substance all opinions and his bias. His grading was so particular, and there is a heavy course work. Take it with someone else.
Like to teach yourself? Take this class. Lectures do not cover key concepts in depth, so be prepared to read. Lectures focus more on personal anecdotes than facts, and anecdotes are on the exams. A real mess of a class. There are two group projects, three exams, and five poorly-laid out discussion board questions on top of bi-weekly labs.
I took this as an online class. Be prepared to work hard and do lots of reading and papers! We were expected to report to Blackboard every week with our long essays (word count required each week) but we as a class only heard from him maybe 5 times the whole semester! Make sure you work on the 15 question exam early!
Beware if you take him for an online summer class. I was expected to write 17,200 words MINIMUM over six weeks, as he had us turn in our exams a week early. If you take him, do the work as early as possible. Doesn't provide great grading criteria either, no info on format or citations.
This is the worst class and professor I have ever had at GRCC. Expects students to read 2- 6 chapters, submit discussion board posts (600 word min.), 12 page labs (200 word min), exams every two weeks. His arrogance and condescending attitude gives other PH D educators a very bad name.
Mike is very passionate about what he teaches. Online class taken, SO much work but it is doable. I thought his expectations were clear, and he wasn't too tough of a grader in my opinion. Get ready to do a BUNCH of reading and writing. The final exam was 15 essay questions, DO THEM THROUGHOUT THE SEMESTER!! Do not let them pile up.
The worst "professor" in my entire school life! What a shame this great community college still has him as a professor. I almost hated GRCC and transfer to Grand Valley State University because of him.
Honestly if you can write well and enjoy writing that's all this class is. If you are able to fill in all the writing requirements, which is challenging and not fun, you'll get an A
I have never had a professor who so clearly does not care about YOUR learning, but instead cares about demonstrating his massive ego. Be prepared for no feedback on any labs, even if you were given a poor grade. Requiring hand written work for an online class is ridiculous, but he does not care. Prepare for a LOT of writing and no help.
He is a professor that does not discuss the right content pertaining to cultural geography. He drifts off subject a lot and makes you right papers about political issues rather than geography. Took this class because I love Geography, but any other professor but him.
By far the worst professor I have had at GRCC thus far. He assigns 2 to 3 papers due each week with minimum word requirements and his grading is way too tough. He gives no feedback on the papers as to why you received the grading you did and he does not care about your learning whatsoever. Very frustrating. Do not take a class with this professor.
I did not like this professor, it seems like he doesnt care about his students, he doesnt give good feedback, he does not tell you what you did wrong on his assignments, he is a very tough grader, he will never give a clear answer if you have a question, overall he just is not a good professor. He is the worst teacher ive had.
As much as I want to say I learned something from him I didn't. His class was just busywork that wasted my time and hurt my overall GPA. I have never had a professor like this where he does not hand out rubrics for lab assignments and marks you down even though his only criteria was to answer all questions and meet the word count which I did.
I had Mr. Devivo for GE 132, an entry level course. We had a 10 page lab, two 600 word assignments, at least 150 pages to read, and an exam every two weeks. Do not bother reaching out to him if you have any questions for his class, as his answer will always be "refer back to the syllabus." He is a very hard grader and will not give you any feedback
There is little to no feedback on homework turned in, which is quite frustrating. No feedback on points deducted from Blackboard posts, and no feedback on labs turned in, unless you email him about it. There is also a MASSIVE amount of 600+ words essays, and I found it to be more challenging than a 400+ writing class.
He literally will not give any feedback and will not explain his grading choices. Even when asked. Stay away because you wont learn anything
Don't take this class. You will get no feedback on your assignments, even if you ask for it. There is no mercy for any outside situations that may affect your work. I received an incomplete because I didn't finish the last 10 points worth, when I completed the other 630. The professor does not do any work, you will teach yourself and receive grades
This was one of the worst classes I have ever taken. I am a high GPA student and this class gave me the worst grade I've ever gotten. He lacks communication skills and is a terrible grader. No matter how much effort you put in he doesn't care because very little seems to meet his standards. If you choose to have him as a professor... GOOD LUCK!
He's an excessively specific micro-manager who grades too harshly. He is lacking nuance or empathy in his approach. An environment of dread is cast over each week by overloading the student with (sometimes up to) 6 chapters note taking, movies, research papers, and tests in one week. The class material, however, is fantastic. I wish I could enjoy.
The content of this course is very interesting, but you have so much to do in so little time that it's very difficult to enjoy any of it. The class I took was accelerated, so a heavy workload is expected, but 5 essays each with 300-620 word requirements along with minimally one hour-long video and a 20-page article to read is a little much IMO.
I attended his class during the Winter semester of 2021, and he ended up being the worst professor I've ever had. He gave me bad grades on all my assignments and never provided feedback. When I asked for feedback, he said refer to blackboard. In my case, he does not want his students to succeed. He also likes to bring politics into the classroom.
The worst professor I've had to date. He brings politics into the classroom and if you don't agree with his views you're looked down a pawn. Getting good grades in this class is close to impossible. You put many hours into his four 800 word essays every week and still he will never give an A. He ignores students asking for feedback on lower grades.
He never taught the class and you have to do 600 to 800 word essay each week. Never provides feed back. Took him in the summer never again basically ruin my curiosity of learn geography.
Easily one of the worst professors I've had during my time at GRCC. Class consists of papers that have nothing to do with the textbook readings, no feedback on papers, pointless lectures if you attend the class and more. Toughest grader I've seen in my life. Would I ever recommend this guy to anyone for class? Not a chance. Terrible choice.
He is the reason YouTube removed dislike button. 1000+ essays weekly. A 10+ page lab every other week. No feedback on anything. His grading is so harsh. Had him before and it was bad, but not this bad. Hes going downhill. I dont mind essays, and am a good writer, but this class is for someone with an English degree. Do. NOT. TAKE.
A lot of people don't like DeVivo because he's tough, but if you enjoy an academic challenge and are willing to invest the time-- it's well worth it. Not only did DeVivo ignite my passion for geography, he helped me secure funding to travel to a conference in Cali and has become a mentor in my geography career. His guidance has been life changing.
Ridiculous prof. Gave absolutely zero feedback other than "look at the syllabus". He brings up politics during class, on tests, and in papers. He also makes you read his own opinionated papers and respond to them for a grade. I received an A in every other class I took this semester but received a C in his class. DO NOT TAKE.
Mr. Devivo takes a lot of pride in Geography, he is anything but a pushover/lackluster proffessor. He holds his students and their work to a very high standard. These standards are clearly laid out, however, it may be a bit more difficult to reach him outside of class. This class was difficult, but success is more than achievable if you want it!
Professor DeVivo is obviously very passionate about Geography. I believe he expects a certain level of accountability from his students to be self-sufficient. All of his expectations are clearly laid out and he answers specific questions if they are not in the syllabus or elsewhere on BB. There is a huge amount of reading and paper writing.
Never have had a professor as full of themselves as this man... Introductory Geography and this man treats it like we're all going for our PhD in Geography. If this wasn't a required course for my program I would've dropped this joke of a class after reading the syllabus. AVOID THIS PROFESSOR'S CLASSES!!!!! Pompous and full of hot air.
For your own sanity, don't take this class at all. Only if you have a COLOSSAL amount of free time to dedicate to 2-3 discussion board posts a week that has a 300/600/1200 word minimum from lengthy reading and interviewed lectures. Material is hard at times/boring to conjure up that many words. This class is absolutely draining. Please beware.
This person does not deserve the title of professor due to the lack of commitment that is provided. To clarify there are lots of specific rules that DeVivo demands but in return he will not respond to emails or provide feedback on work that received poor grades. EPIC FAIL, I recommend finding a different teacher if you want to grow as a student.
I cannot stress enough just how terrible this man is. He has a holier-than-thou attitude, assignments will be given ZERO credit if minimum word req. isn't met or you submit incorrectly, & he gives no feedback. 3 assignments +1 quiz a week, but 1 assignment takes at least 4+ hours and quizzes cover 2-3 chapters of dense text. RUN for your life.
Mike Devivo is passionate in Geography, unfortunately his passion and love for the subject matter is overshadowed by his teaching methods. 4 DB posts a week, each one taking 2-4 hours after skimming through the reading and video lectures. Avoid DeVivo at all costs. I received an A but only due to the fact that I had the spare time to devote to it.
Doesn't provide feedback or reason for poor grading nor will discuss with you refers to Rubrik. "Wide variety of viewpoints are encouraged, documented evidence supporting those viewpoints is imperative" only allowed to use NYT. Creates impression and acts on personal views, any disagreement with opinions correlates with failure of assignments.
This professor has clear expectations as detailed in every assignment. He expects well-written, properly sourced papers to be submitted. It's a geography course, which requires students to read books. Due dates are suggested, not mandatory. I suspect students who didn't do well have trouble following instructions.
This class took about 80 hours to complete. The labs and writing assignments are very time consuming. Lots of trick questions in the labs, it seems like he wants you to do poorly. He is very hard to please. It is a gen ed, but is treated like a science major. Do not take this class if you are working full time
I spend about 3-5(+)hrs per paper, three papers every two weeks plus a quiz. I read the syllabus and proof-read about 3 times before posting my paper. I have only received one A so far. I hate to say it since DeVivo is so nice, but I'm a STEM major, and this 3-credit class is taking up most of my time! I'd withdraw if financial aid would let me...
He makes students buy movies on amazon for $5-13, 3 per week to complete the "assignments" which are all discussions of 800+ words being 3-4 per week. The book is not being used at all besides reading a chapter from it. I wouldn't advise anyone to take his classes as he does a horrible job being a professor and provides no help at all for students.
I really wanted to like his class as he seems like a nice man, but this was the most bizarre class I've ever seen. 3 papers (300 to 900 words in length) every two weeks and a poorly worded, intentionally confusing quiz that gave you 45 minutes to answer up to 65 questions. Started off with ~20 students, went down to 8 by the end.
The way he taught this Geography was ridiculous. Every week I had 3-7 ESSAYS of 300 to 1000 words. Seriously. Over twenty essays... THIS IS A GEOGRAPHY CLASS PEOPLE! I didn't learn a thing. Awful. I didn't know that I was taking an English class! I mean I am a computer major. This was a terrible idea to choose this class for my humanities.
It seems like many professors forget why working adults need online classes- we don't have a lot of free time. Professor DeVivo is no exception. I am dropping this class late into the semester because I simply do not have time for 4 1000 word essays plus reading and quizzes per month. Honestly it's my fault for wanting a higher education.
One of the worst classes I've ever taken. I love to write but this class almost ruined it for me. I work a lot that is the reason I took online classes but this class requires a minimum of 15-20 hours a week on homework, mostly consisting of long essays. Stay away from this class at all costs, please! Also instructions are terrible. Worst professor
It's crazy that professors don't provide ANY feedback on essays written, and this class had around 10-15 essays in total, which is a ton. I did not like how he forced us to write essays catering to his own personal political beliefs either. This class had more work than my other 4 classes combined. And don't bother emailing this prof if u have Q's
A lot of papers and absolutely no feed back. Papers were good topics and you do learn a lot if you give it the time & effort.
Do not even know where to start with this professor, can not even think of one good thing about him. His class is a waste of time, doesn't teach a single thing. First class I ever failed out of the 120 college credits I have. Stay away from this professor.
The workload for this class is somewhere in the 15-20 hours a week range. Each lab was about 70 questions. DBs were typically a 1,000-word min. Exams pretty much every week. The class is on how the environment is racist. There was also a module on BLM but I didn't make it in the class that long. Not sure what that has to deal with Geography.
The course is watching around 3-4 hours of watching/reading materials and writing 3 essays at 800 words a piece each week. Devivo grades harshly and will not give any feedback for any essay written and is bad at emailing back to any questions. Lucky enough Devivo's lack of care means that you can use AI easily to try and get past this brutal class!
This Professor is obviously passionate about Geography but his passion is overshadowed by his ridiculous expectations. You have to write essays ranging from 600-1000 pages twice a week that is only after you escape the first week were you write 4 essays. That's not including quizzes, he expects you to answer each question in 30 seconds each lol
This is the worst professor I have ever had. His requirements are absurd for a 100-level class, and he gives zero feedback. Several 1,000+ word essays per week, in addition to quizzes and labs. The amount of time I put into this class has been greater than my three other classes combined. If possible, STAY AWAY. I don't know why GRCC keeps him.
Stay away from this professor at all costs!; He provides an unfair workload of 2-3 essays with a minimum word count of 600-1000+ words per week, uses the full amount of class time for lectures every time, grades with tyranny, and only effectively grades whatever fits his personal agenda for the essay. Seems to forget we all have personal lives.
very funny professor, and has had a lot of experience in his field. I had a hybrid class and from the few lectures we were required to go to his teaching was good but kinda was all over the place. He allowed us to turn in assignments whenever we wanted to while also giving us a schedule that he recommended us to have things done.
One of the worst professors I have ever had, do not take his class. Unrealistic expectations in terms of how he grades all the assignments. The toughest grader I have ever had and gives you hour long lectures of interviews that are very boring. Also forces his views onto students especially in the last assignment. Do not take.
This is the hardest class i have ever taken. If you want a gen ed thats easy dont do this class i regret it i am not going to pass this class. All he does is over complicates things that shouldnt be that hard. Theres just videos and lots of reading. And he gives labs that are test but labed labs. This class is more like a 400 level class. Not easy.
This is genuinely the hardest class I have ever taken. It's a simple geography class and he makes you write two papers every week with three tests and one exam all bundled up into one week. This class is definitely not one you want to take as one of your gen eds. Steer very far away.
This is a discussion board hevey class that you do not want to fall behind in. The professor is lenient on when you turn in your discussion boards, but I would try to keep up. I would avoid this class if necessary.
It's a hybrid course but recommend that you go to every lecture since he tells you how to do certain labs, highlights parts of textbook that'll be on labs and tests, and teaches with a passion. It's a college course of course there will be work, put in lots of time and effort and you'll pass. Each module has videos but they're helpful so don't skip
Professor insists on purchasing the latest versions of book. The tests are timed and do not match with the new data and involve matching with very vague choices. The writing itself is not too bad, but there is a lot amount of it. The only extra credit opportunity provided was on-campus, despite the class being entirely online.
So many papers. I did not feel that I learned much of anything during this class, despite the two required papers a week, the content was not geared to constructive learning.
i do not see what everyone is so upset about. Yes, there is a lot of work in this class but it is a lab and lecture that is to be expected. He has the most clear directions that I have ever had from a professor he cannot dumb it down anymore even if he tried. he is very chill about chill about late work I do not have any professors that were.
RUN! Do not take this class if you care about your GPA, mental health or work-life balance. His lectures are youtube videos of a conference from 2015, avoids office hours, avoids questions. Offers vague condescension instead of feedback. Uses wildly arbitrary grading and redundant assignments to soothe his own ego. Basically defrauding the college.
The amount of homework is insane, writing multiple 1000 word papers is ridiculous. The tests are on material that he never actually teaches, it's all based on YouTube videos from at least 7 years ago that aren't even that related to the material. Combined with his harsh grading, it's irritating to be in this class and nearly impossible to succed.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. Most Narcissistic teacher I have ever had. First couple things we did was learn about how educated he was and why we need to address him as doctor cause he is so full of himself and thinks he is better then. He also refuses to help give any constructive feedback. GRCC NEEDS to fire him as soon as possible.
I would strongly recommend most people stay away from this professor. I took this class for a Gen-Ed requirement and found that it had a disproportionately high workload. Unless you are looking to get into geography it is not worth it. On average expect to write about 4 essays every two weeks. Also do not expect to easily get feedback on your work.
I'm currently in law school and was reflecting on how much worse my life was in this class; DeVivo is a divisive professor, an egregious egomaniac, & political ideaologue. He joyfully dunks on students and flaunts his power over them for fun. His dogma is unbridled and his class is a narcissistic dictatorship. Someone needs to hold him accountable!
This professor is absolutely horrid, giving you 20-page articles to read and expecting you to write 1200 word essays for it on a day-to-day basis. Furthermore, the amount of analysis and writing you have to do is quite strenuous just to get an awful grade with absolutely no feedback even through emailing him with his "feedback system." Don't take!!
Probably the hardest class I've ever taken, but mainly because it keeps you on your feet and busy working. Be prepared to put in the time and effort. He's a very kind and professional professor, take advantage of office hours to get to know him better and to grasp the class more. Online course is fast-paced but prepares you for harder classes
worst professor would not take class if your looking for a easy general class lots of homework hardest class I have ever taken not worth your time. He is a very hard grader and does not provide clear instructions.
This is the only professor I have ever submitted a complaint against, and I've had some bad teachers.
Avoid this class if possible. Lots of busy work like weekly 1000+ word essays, exams, and video lectures. Grading seems arbitrary. But unstuckstudy ai helped me get through it with a B.
Online class
Does not give reasons for grades, arbitrary grading structure, overly descriptive in irrelevant info and not clear in instructions. On average 1000 word essays every week. Labs and essays are formatted weird. By his essay grading criteria, meeting 6/9 requirements is a 20-39% grade. He is the head of the department if that is at all telling.
I'm reviewing him after I retook his class. I failed the first time and barely passed the second. His grading is incredibly vague and he provides no feedback as to why he gave the grade that he did. He posted a few messages on the first day of class and I didn't hear from him again until finals week. I can recommend enough.
100% do not take this class. I have always been an A student but this class made me breakdown everyday. You read an entire textbook, take 5 exams based on the reading but the exams are insanely specific, watch 5/6 documentaries, and must write 16 essays. He grades super harsh and will give no feedback. Spent about 15 hours/week reading and writing.
2-3 essays a week. At least one documentary (not even free!) to watch a week. 5 confusing tests with a time limit. Grading is very confusing (takes off .1 and .2 percent all the time and never gives feedback as to why!). Glad I passed so I don't have to write 3 800 word essays every week on documentaries I had to pay to watch.
This professor assigns an overwhelming workload for a 100-level general education course. In the first week alone, there were three 800+ word essays and a test. The time needed to complete the assignments effectively was easily double that of any other course I've taken, making it impossible to manage with other academic and life responsibilities.
Miserable teacher with a miserable class, honestly if you need to take this course for credit do it online.
Honestly cheat his entire course, his labs make no sense and he doesn't know how to use computers, aswell as his videos are from 2015 so good luck trying to watch a youtube video frame by frame.
makes college kids' lives miserable by assigning essays every week, and we aren't getting our doctorates I don't know why he treats the class like we are.
Tons of essays and seriously pushed a political agenda, while I was more interested in learning about about social interactions not a one sided view of the US politcal spectrum.
Get ready to spend every waking moment of your free time reading and listening to bland distorted audio podcasts by a agenda driven man who refuses to give feedback on his grading criteria let alone respond to emails about anything. Honestly it's a miracle this man hasn't been fired. If I could time travel I would give this mans father a condom.
Don't take this course! Lots of people write about the discussions that you have to do, and they are the major killer of the class, and the tests/labs are very out of date, and even with data. Very clear political agenda. Topics have nothing to do with geography at times. You'll dislike geography after you take this course.
The worst professor i've ever had. The class is astronomically complicated and confusing. The homework is insane, and the labs and tests are highly confusing. Requires 600-1,400 word essays every week based on old ass videos that don't teach you anything about geography and gives no feedback on grading system whatsoever. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS.
Not only do you have to write about 400 words every day, but he makes you take Lab assigments and Exams. The workload is extremely large, and I would never even consider taking this class again.
Shoved in entire semesters worth of material into 7 week classes, literally run. I immediately dropped.
The best thing about this class was the reasonable deadlines, which could match anyone's needs. As long as you stay on topic, you can write about anything in the articles or content in the textbook and still get a good grade. I can agree that at first, everything might look overwhelming, but it isn't bad once you start writing.
Overwhelming workload, no feedback, no support if you fall behind. 14–22 hours per module with confusing labs and massive discussion posts. Felt like I taught myself. Unless you have unlimited free time, avoid this class.
Zero feedback on any discussion, over 1400-word essays a week, will not respond to emails if not put in the perfect format, and will dock half your grade if you forget the smallest thing. Used the same templates repeatedly every week and never varied them. Very political and focused on left-wing views. Would never recommend this class or professor.
By far the worst and hardest class I have ever taken. He grades harder than any professor I have had in my 4 years of college. I took as a summer class and would have much rather did anything else then go through one of his classes again. An unnecessary amount of work along with poor guidelines and hard grading makes the class a very difficult pass
For someone who preaches for good writing, he sucks at it himself. His emails are longer than the bible, he has three separate tabs on blackboard for JUST discussion board rules, and expects us to spend our entire lives on essays every single week. The intro week alone had 3 separate prompts we had to submit. I hope he's removed from his position
Worst professor I have ever experienced. For 100 level class, expected between 1000-1500 words in essays each week. Deters students from emailing by forcing them to explain what they did wrong with their essay. No rubric or comments for essays. I'm fine with tough graders and high expectations, but he is sanctimonious and punitive. Zero respect.
This was by far the worst professor I've ever had. He grades completely arbitrarily with no explanation or consistency no matter how hard you try, you never know what you did wrong. He never responds to emails, so there's no way to get clarification or help. Terrible professor. Never take this class or any class with him.
worst class I have ever taken at grcc.
Do not take any classes taught by Professor Devivo. He only cares about the money and doesn't care about his students. Since he has a PHD, he has a huge ego! If you still plan on taking his class, he DOES NOT offer feedback and will make you write extra essays to receive it. Expect lots of weekly essays, but no feedback after you submit. Avoid him!
I always got random grades on my work and when I asked for feedback, he told me I needed to submit handwritten notes and "do my part". Spent an insane amount of time on essays every week and had no personal life during the span of this course. He clearly does not want students to succeed, as stated in announcements. Also pushes his views a lot.
Terrible professor. POS person. Don't take him EVER. He needs to find a new profession
Terrible. Didn't help me whatsoever when I had questions. Grading was so harsh and specific. Do NOT take this class.
This class single handedly has made me want to end my educational career. A very smug man preaching agenda and practicing educational practices that are actively damaging lives. I work a full time job and go to college full time and this course alone makes me want to end it all.
I'd recommend anyone thinking of taking this class to look for something else unless they're really passionate about geography. I do get that it's a lab class that's all online but it's not worth your sanity. Just find a class thats once a week in person and has an online lecture than any course with this professor.
If you're not religious, pick a religion and pray.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS IF YOU HAVE NO FREE TIME AT ALL. I'm not one who hates essays or writing, but he genuinely has ruined it for me. Back to back 3000 word essays but also, yes you have to watch three videos and ten articles and it's just busy work for no reason, decent deadlines at least? Nope. Don't take his class. It's a nightmare.
Very tough grader with a rubric that is unclear on how to receive a given grade. To get feedback on assignments you had to write at least 200 words about shortcomings in your essay, up to 500 if you received a D- to a C+. The median grade on assignments was shown and it was never above a D. Note he's the professor of every geography class.
My experience in this class has been a net negative to my educational career. Not only was it a drag to complete, but as someone who is not majoring in geography, it is virtually impossible to find the time to do everything required in the class being enrolled full time. The class is poorly organized, and a nightmare to complete. DONT TAKE IT!!!!!!
The other things people say about this professor are true.
