Challenging but worth it

Pretty easy class, he is pretty flexible as well. As far as computer science teachers go he is the most interesting!
Dobeck knows the 0's and the 1's - Justin Hammon
Easy class if your a computer sicence major!
Awesome teacher! Knows his assembly language :p
Very bright guy. He get excited about the class. I'd take the class again just for the entertainment.
Mike is an excellent teacher. He shares his passion of Computer Science with his students and they catch the bug. He really knows his subject. He has taken Sierra College to some awesome heights. Why can't more professors have this much passion??
awesome funny teacher... a lot of fun and really cool...
I have been avoiding a direction in computer science, I have been an avid Agriculture lover, and Psych major, but now I'm looking forward to more Computer Science classes. Other teachers pale in comparison.
Mike is one of the best teachers I've ever had. He made assembly very fun and very easy to learn. A very cause-and-effect guy, which is a great way to introduce new ideas to people.
Awesome teacher. Very passionate. Knows material well. Helpful. Best teacher at Sierra by far. Recommended!
Awesome professor. Very entertaining and he knows his <explicitive>. Makes assembly an easy language to learn and it was a bummer when I had to miss class. Sierra college has few professors of this caliber.
Very low maintenece online class, the lectures that he send you are very good and well laid out. He is a very good teacher.
Mr Dobek is the best teacher at Sierra College. I've had probably 30 teachers and no one comes close to him. He is really helpful, teaches really well and does an excellent job keeping you interested. I usually like ditching class, but in this case I would rather be in class than anywhere else.
Awesome teacher
Very Very Nice. Such a Good Teacher. Even his online class has some stuff going on. he replys to every single message on the discussion boards.
Awesome teacher!! Funny guy, easy to relate to.. knows his shiz-nat. Very helpful in and out of class =)
Computer nerd? yeah! He will keep anyone entertained that is not into computers. Funny, and just ask him about his space toys.
Took him for online course. He sends out discs for his lectures and he explains everything. I was very impressed with his style. Couple of quizes, two tests and 7 or 8 labs and then it is over! It is great. Highly Rec. Seems very nice. Enjoyed the class!
Took class online. If you're good with computers, you'll fly thru this class. Very easy to understand while still capturing the main points. Not much homework if you know your way around a computer. Highly recommend this as a fast-track course - don't feel high speed.
Best teacher at sierra college. Very interesting, funny, and smart. By far the best professor at this school.
This guy is really nice, makes class interesting, really knows the subject, is helpful and is the only teacher I have had that made learning about computers pain free. Take him for all your computer classes!
Dobeck is an awesome teacher!
He is funny and loves to tell stories. Ask him anything from space to his family, he will tell you it all.
He makes class interesting by telling stories and showing movies, but also teaches exactly what you need to know. Take him...he's the best.
He teaches what you need to know, and it is worth attending class just to hear him lecture. Very easy teacher, because he explains everything many different ways. Great to have you have trouble understanding stuff.
Funny guy!
Great Teacher. He really knows what he is teaching. I became interested in robotics just based on his teachings. He is always willing to help with any difficulties. He is so real and really knows computers.
I had great professors all arround last semester but my days started with Dobeck. He is an awsome teacher who makes the class fun to go to. He will make you laugh every class and wants to help students "get it". his class is about absourbing all that is computer science not about tests and KNOWING the textbook by heart.
Easy, hilarious, smart-ass, and way fun. I started my days with him and even though I didn't care for the class, I looked forward to having him. If you're sensitive, don't take him; mild profanity and potty humour takes place, but he's a good guy and very funny if you're not easily offended. And don't waste money on the book; you never use it!
Very helpful. Funny. Loves his work.
Mike's quite an interesting professor. His classes start on time, so try and get there a minute or two early. This class does not have a textbook so be prepared to take lots of legible notes. You can't help but crack up when he gets in a few well timed jokes.
OH I LOVE THIS MAN!!! he is funny and smart and just fantastic. Take his class its easy and you learn what you need to know. i had a great time and i am not a computer geek...just an average chick so it's not geek biased. :) if you have any interest Take This Class.
He's an awesome Teacher! Hilarious and extremely helpful.. jsut fun to be around!
very funny....enjoyed going to class and learned a lot!
I'm taking his online couse and it's absolutely GREAT!!! He has a passion for what he is teaching and corresponds great on the discussion board with any questions. Very HELPFUL! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
This guy is AWESOME -- a great professor! He's enjoyable to listen to, eager to help students, is crystal clear in presenting information and in what he expects you to know, and really wants his students to succeed. And he's so nice! Great guy, great class.
Great Teacher! Easy to listen to and funny as hell. Can't go wrong with Dobeck. I learned allot.
Dobeck is the bomb. Not only is he freaking hilarious, but he really knows what he's talking about, and he teaches it well. He uses examples to demonstrate his points, and his tests are not terribly difficult. Highly recommended.
This guy is awesome. One of the clearest teachers ever, and he really, really knows his subject.
One of the best programming teachers I've ever had. Very helpful, detailed lectures, great examples, and a great sense of humor to boot. Definitely the best teacher CS teacher.
Mr Dobeck is great! He uses different teaching techniques to make sure he gets through to every student. Test and quizes are easy. And I was actually excited to so some of the lab assignments. Took the class online and would reccomend it to anyone needing to take cs10!
Dobeck is the best. Take him! His lectures online made Java about as easy to understand as possible.
Mike Dobeck makes boring subjects interesting. Highly recommend any course he is teaching.
Mike is very passionate about what he teaches and tries to instill this in his students. His lectures are interesting and easy to follow. He's always friendly and very funny. I'd highly recommend this class.
Dobeck is a great teacher. He's a nice guy and makes his classes easy. I know close to nothing about programming and got A's in CS10 and 12. Here's a tip that most students don't do for some reason: copy and paste all of the quizzes onto your page of notes for the test. Almost every question is the same. You'll get at least a 90% on every test.
He's a nice, funny guy and his classes are ridiculously easy, but I've had him for multiple classes and I don't feel like I've learned much of anything. In fact, I'm scared to to take upper div CS classes at the UC next year bc the foundation of knowledge I've lain in his classes is so flimsy. But, like I said, you'll laugh a lot w/him and get an A
I took his online class. Mike is such a nice guy. He is totally flexible and understanding. If you give any kind of effort you can get an A.
I had Mr. Dobeck for a lot of my cs classes. He tries to make the learning experience as easy and helpful as possible. I will be transferring out to a uni and I'm not sure if I'm over or under prepared for upper division work. I did indeed learn a lot though. He has funny little anecdotes. I would say he stays up-to-date in the world of technology.
Great professor! Knows just when to throw out something funny to break the tension when your brain cannot compute one more thing! Helpful, patient and will work with you!
Great teacher
Great teacher
One of the best computer science teachers in the Sacramento junior college system.
This professor really knows his "stuff." Half way through the semester and he still has a sense of humor. He's a gas!
BEST teacher! really funny which keeps you awake. TAKE this class for an easy A.
Nice guy, bad teacher. Doesn't follow the syllabus or schedule... Assigns projects expecting students to just 'get it' from staring blankly at the screen... ends up having to just give away the answer. Assigns quizes and tests out of the blue with no warning or study material. People who might enjoy this class are people who already know programmin
lol he is hilarious! im always looking forward to go to his class and laugh! easy grader, tests/quizes are mostly online. Just go to his class and listen to his lectures AND laugh:)
Most of the assignments are very easy, as are the tests. However, there are some difficult points in the class. I saw some students struggle, but I chose to visit Mike during his office hours and he explained everything till it was crystal clear. If you show up to class and ask for help when you don't understand this class will be an easy A.
Mike Dobeck is an awesome guy, do not get me wrong. He's hysterical and great to listen to ramble. However, you will not learn a THING from this class, and I'm not trying to be harsh. Unless you're already familiar with computers or 115% fascinated by them, his actual lecture doesn't teach much and to do the labs you'll have to teach yourself
The class is very easy. However, Dobeck was not very responsive to emails. It sometimes took days for a response or I never received a response at all. Video lectures were interesting. Not enough projects, however.
Mike Dobeck is a great teacher. He's hilarious and he always makes class interesting. He loves his job, so he knows what he's talking about. I would recommend him, he's just awesome. Great class overall.
Outstanding professor! You don't get many like Professor Dobeck. He loves what he does, is helpful beyond belief, he knows his subject well, and what more can I say? Highly recommended in this student's opinion!
This is the easiest computer science class I had ever taken. This teacher is awesome! Take him! No regrets! :) Everyone passes with high grades!
Dobeck makes me NEVER want to take an online class again. I left him several e-mails (on blackboard and his personal email) and never received a response back about my grade and he was never clear about how much assignments we're to be completed, etc. Zero human communication is available with the online class Do not take his online class!
I took a class with Mike 10 years ago and still think he was the best teacher I ever had. Crazy to find hes still there doing what he loves.
Love this guy. Took Java with him; his class is easy, but you still have to work at it. He doesn't take roll or do in-class quizzes, so it's easy to miss class (which hurts you come test time). If you're a slacker-type, Barry Brown or Bill Cole might be better choices, as you have more incentive to go to class with them. Otherwise, Dobeck's great!
Awesome professor! Makes the class possible to pass and is very hilarious! attendance is not mandatory for lecture, only for lab (to actually complete the lab for the day). Great professor Overall!
Dobeck makes all his classes fun! If you are unfamiliar with material, read the book and pay attention and you will pass. He explains things very clearly and ALWAYS answers questions. He is very helpful during his office hours as well and always has great recommendations on where to find more answers. He got me excited about computer science!
Excellent teacher one of the best in the business!! RE: 1989/1990 CompSci student, in Independent Computer studies; participant in the prototype for NASA Getaway Special project.
Excellent teacher one of the best in the business!! RE: 1989/1990 CompSci student, in Independent Computer studies; participant in the prototype for NASA Getaway Special project. 'Many thx to U Mike!!
Extremely helpful and always willing to answer any question, no matter how simple it may be. Makes sure everything is very clearly explained. He is also a comedian, which makes even the dull moments of the class very entertaining and interesting. The book was useful for the online quizzes and exams.
Professor Dobeck has a Ph.D in humor. His computer science lectures are riddled by jokes and references to his favorite pastime, beer drinking. Dobeck's lectures are so entertaining, clear and engaging that he actually makes you not want to miss the lectures just so you don't miss out on the latest jokes. Highly recommended for all Comp. Sci majors
DO THE WORK GET AN A
Super easy class. Professor is awesome too! Must take!! On the midtermfinal he let's you have a piece of paper with notes.
Fantastic teacher. He has great jokes and stories. Very easy, you just have to do the projects, which he'll give you most of the program. The mid-term is easy, and the final has most of the questions in the midterm. You don't really need a textbook, because you can just look everything up online.
Professor Dobeck uses terrible language that did not make me feel good after I left his class. His stories and joke are sometimes terribly inappropriate and distract from study material. I would highly suggest not taking his course if you don't want to be constantly bombed with profanity.
He's a great teacher, is hilarious, has a great rapport and cares about his students, and is a great guy at heart. That said, I feel like I could have been challenged a little bit more.
Funniest professor I have had. Genuinely likes what he is teaching. Is not good at communicating through e-mail though.
I wasn't very interested in computer science myself but you can tell Mike is very passionate about programming. The assignments, quizzes and tests are really simple and straight forward. He will make you smile or laugh every lecture I promise you that.
This class was great. I had zero programming experience and can now write programs that help me with calculations in other science courses. He basically spoon feeds you how to do each assignment. I skipped too much and missed assignment explanations; it's why I got a B. Excellent lectures. Hilarious. Made learning fun.
Lectures are split into comedy and content. Incredibly helpful professor, quick to answer questions and follow through. Highly recommend.
He's really cool and CS10 is super easy. The class was extremely fun.
Mike Dobeck is the greatest computer science teacher at Sierra College. He gives inspirational and funny lectures that encourage students to learn and try different approaches to projects. He's always to help students when stumped on a project and gives great feedback. Overall the best teacher I've had at the college.
His online Java class was very good. There were online lecture videos along with a no-so-necessary textbook that you can read for additional information. At times I wondered if the class was still in session due to a lack of activity. It seemed as if we did very little, but we did learn a lot. I guess that goes to show how good the class was.
This class is an easy A. He gives you two attempts for quizzes and exams. Exam questions are pulled directly from the quiz questions. All quiz and exam questions are from the textbook. He provides lectures for each section. The are also lab assignments that he provides walkthrough how-to videos for and aren't time consuming
I found this class the most interesting from all CS classes that I took, and it is also very informative. I was surprised that we switched to learning circuits in the middle of the semester - it was also what I always wanted to understand, and getting my hands on a microprocessor and Logisim was super fun!
Great, funny professor! Knows what he's talking about and is very careful in lectures to make sure everybody understands. He walks you through most of the work and provides a lot of examples, so the class is not very difficult. My only complaint is that because he walks you through everything, there aren't many assignments left to figure out alone.
I wasn't really a fan of his teaching style. There was very little activity, which for some people could be a plus, but I wanted to learn Java. I felt like the lab subjects weren't very relative to what we were learning. Very soothing monotone voice so that put me to sleep a couple times. I thought the unrequited book did a better job.
Very nice guy and funny, lectures were boring but I am not interested in computer sci just taking this as general ed. He seems very passionate about what he's doing and loves to make people laugh. He kept us entertained with funny stories and the class is SO EASY to pass :)
Mike is a really funny teacher and he makes class enjoyable. I learned a lot more from him than any CS professor on campus. Come into class ready to learn, otherwise you will miss important stuff. It's easy to pass as long as you keep up with deadlines and listen to lectures
THE BEST TEACHER EVER.
the quizes are easy the hw is easy the teacher is cool and i learned alot is all ya gotta know
Awesome class! First class for my degree and it made me realize I am going to love it! For online, the entire course material is available, so you can jump ahead if you wish too. Best part were the interactive Lab Assignments! Wish there were actually more of those. I will also be taking him for my online CSCI 12 class. Definitely recommend!
I love Dobeck as an instructor. However, I'm a little disappointed in how easy this class was. This class was almost a complete after-thought, and I feel like I learned about 3 weeks worth of material in an entire semester. My GPA isn't complaining, though.
The Labs were completed independently of course. However, the midterm and quizzes had an option for 2 attempts. The final however is only a single-attempt and there's no extra credit. Take note, that many Labs will consume a majority of your weekend. (16 Labs or so, 1 Midterm 1 Final & 4 Quizzes)
Mike is a hilarious guy. He makes all of his classes exciting and mixes his humor into all of his lectures. I absolutely recommend him.
I got a perfect 100% in CS 10! Dobeck is amazing at what he does. Not only did he pick a good textbook that explained everything, he walks through things in his video lectures. Sometimes he makes jokes then and there on them so thats awesome. I absolutely recommend going with this professor if you need to take Intro to Computers. 6/5 stars.
The only professor who didn't make me want to leave class. He cares about the students who are actually interested in learning, and he doesn't punish you if life just happens. As a girl, he was one of the only CS professor that I felt didn't treat me any differently for it. As someone who hated college, he inspired me to keep going.
Mike made learning assembly enjoyable. Every day you can either expect to hear about either: his future plane, working with NASA, his 3D printers, or what the school administrator's salary is. If you ever get the chance to take Mike Dobeck, do it.
The best ever, highly recommend
Great professor, great lectures filled with a lot of humor to make the material less dry, and really helps you understand what you are learning. Great class.
This class was one of the best computer classes I've taken. Prof. Dobeck's online lectures were fun to watch and informative. He is laid back and is willing to help whenever needed. He made learning Java fun and guided the class from beginning to end. I would definitely recommend him as a professor.
Mike is a comedic person. Hard to tell from his online lectures but he really enjoys what he teaches. He makes the labs easy to understand while still making you think hard about it. He's responsive on canvas and is clear in what he wants. I didn't read much from the textbook and did just fine but I think I missed out on some important info.
CSCI10 -Great professor, fun class to go to and is EXTREMELY PASSIONATE about computers which made the whole class amazing. Regularly throwing jokes in and very helpful talking to when you don't understand something. Use textbook for weekly-fortnightly quizzes, quizzes aren't too hard and the exams are pretty much random questions from the quizzes.
Quite literally the funniest professor I have ever had. He cares a lot about his subject and his students. His self deprecating sense of humor really makes me miss the course.
The perfect guy for people who are inexperienced with ARM assembly language. His lecture videos are pretty much how-to process for the labs. The online class was kind of disorganized and he had an awkward way of structuring his lessons and assignments (and assignment due dates), but Mike is still a great professor! He has quick response times too!
He sometimes gives extra points on assignments. I have never gotten a score below the maximum (and I'm just an average student). His instructions were sometimes vague on assignments. Fortunately, his lecture videos give you an abundance of hints to completing them. His class was a bit disorganized with due dates and whatnot, but still a great pick!
If you actually plan to be a computer science major AND you want to learn, then this class isn't for you. This is one of the easiest classes I have taken, and I didn't learn anything : ( I took his CSCI 13 and CSCI 39 course. Again if you want a easy A then take his courses, but if you want to learn then DON'T.
Most content is in the lectures, but you'll want to read the book if you want a high A (last few weeks require the book). Not a difficult class by any means, so it's a good one to take over the summer. The labs were my favorite part of this class because he walked us through each step while encouraging the class to be creative and fun with it.
I really enjoyed this class. I'm not interested in computer science at all, but need to take this class for my major. I really enjoyed listening to this Prof. lectures because he's really funny. The lectures are long and sometimes slow, but taking notes is really useful for the chapter quizzes. The labs were my favorite part for sure!
Very comprehensive lectures. His examples are really good, especially after you see his videos on the programs themselves. His quizzes have a few questions that haven't been input right or are in the wrong chapter, but they have multiple attempts and still require you to understand stuff. I suggest watching his lectures at 2x speed (Sorry, Dobeck)
Best CSCI professor I've taken. He's super chill and really understands the subject. Definitely enroll in his class if you're considering it.
I did not dislike professor Dobeck, but I probably would't take a class with him again. I dont think I had a single interaction with him, all of the tests and quizzes were multiple choice and on canvas, so he didnt grade them. His lectures are pretty old, but they still represent all of the information needed for the class.
Pretty easy class. Lecture vids are essentially how-to's for the labs. The labs make you think a little bit on the logical process but not really challenging. From what I can tell, you'll learn more material and programming nuance in his on-ground class. In-short, take online if you want an easy A; take on-ground for a more in-depth coverage.
Class was super easy but I feel like I didn't learn anything. Online pre-recorded lectures, labs, and quizzes/tests. All the quizzes/test questions were on Quizlet so you don't even need to watch the lectures and the labs were all follow-along videos. Wouldn't really recommend if you were a Comp Sci Major unless you really want an easy A.
Semester: Summer of 2023. Take this guy. Lectures are amazing; no need to read textbook (except the last 4/14 chapters). Takes concepts that are so boring and makes them engaging. Lets you take quizzes+some exams twice. NOTE: Last 4 chapters may have been because it was a Summer semester and would be too many lectures to watch in the last week.
He is passionate, but overall not the best teacher when it comes to explaining dense topics. Assignments lacked clear instruction.
This online class was smooth rolling as long as you completed the assignments on-time, which each module is spread across 2 weeks or more. Labs sometimes require you to think a little harder, but otherwise the guided portion is easy to follow. I do like the small comments of humor he interjected into his videos. "...and let the fun time roll"
My favorite CS professor at Sierra so far! His online lectures are really well made and I enjoyed his witty commentary. His class is very manageable, and I felt my success in the class was basically guaranteed just by engaging with the class material. Highly recommend! A joy!
Nice and easy class. He's a chill teacher and will help you if needed. Need more professors like him
