Great teacher, very intelligent, and slightly sarcastic (which just made the class more interesting). I just loved this class!!!
He helps ya out if you're failing. Just do all the extra credit and make most of the classes and you'll do fine.
I took Downs for the 6wk minimester. If you are in class, take notes and study you won't have any probs.
he was good he gives good note reviews so just take notes and be in class for the quizes and youll do great. p.s. final exam is super easy

Great teacher! His test are worth 100 pts, 50 pts are objective and the other 50 pts are an essay. Dont freak out! He gives you the essay question along with a review. There are also 2 reaction papers , I didnt do the first one which brought my grade down. I have my final this week and I'm pretty sure I'll make out with a B average despite not doing the first paper.
He is good teacher, he keeps you interested. His test are essay and comprehension. Study the review sheet, and make a rough draft of the essays and you will do good.Go to every class and take good notes
He was by far one of the best teachers I've ever had. I always looked foward to going to his classes, he made them interesting. The tests were easy, so long as you took notes and just paid attention, and he gives you a great review which really helps. He'll also answer any of your questions. I defenitly reccomend him.
not a hard teacher. very straight forward. just study your quizzes and exams and you'll do fine.
He was great! Kept the material very interesting and teaches from different perspectives than you've been given in other classes. STUDY for the tests and you will do great. His reviews tell you everything that will be covered on tests. They are essay format but we could fill out 3x5 notecards for help during the tests.
If u like history u'll love his class. very interesting.
Essay test is what you will do. so i hope your good at essay test if you take this class. I hated this class
had him for the winter class, he cramed a 16 week class into 11 days. shockingly enough, learned 20 times more in the 11 day course than the actual 16 week course. you get to pick your test and you also get to use a 3X5 notecard on every test including final. never boaring.
talks alot but is very helpful and profides alot of information
very good teacher, i love history after attending his class. you won't regret taking this class! just show up and bring the book.
Cool teacher. Class gets boring sometimes with all the lecture. Attendance is a must, test are multiple choice or essay (your choice). you must study in order to pass this class.
Mr. Downs is an awesome teacher and i miss his class.
Very good teacher. Always made the lesson easy to understand. I'm taking him again!
He is a wonderful teacher! All you have to do is take notes of what he lectures, and use just that to write your essay! He gives essay test titles in advance, and you get ready to write them on the cheat sheet (a 3x5 notecard) and all you have to do is copy it off during the exam! Got an A without memorizing anything at all! Please do not polemize!
A wonderful teacher!
You must take notes!!! He is very thorough but clear and gives you ways to pass easily if you apply yourself at all.
He is a great professor! Attendance is necessary so that you don't fall behind. He keeps lectures pretty interesting and cuts them short most of the time. He gives you the choice of essay or scantron test. Very minimal outside of class reading, but be prepared! Awesome class. Wish I had more history classes to take!
He is a wonderful teacher. If there were more teaches like him, the quality of education will be so much better. Take him for History 1&2. You will come out of his class with a great amount of knowledge. He is one of the best professor I had EVER had.
He's a great teacher. Before his class I could careless about history, now I can't get enough. I wish I could take more history classes. Just take good notes and you should get an A. All students should be required to take History class with him. They'd be better off.
Great professor that I learned a lot from! He is helpful and clear. Also he lets you choose between an essay or multipule choice w/ short id. exam and gives study guides. However, his tests are a bit hard and tricky. This is a great class for serious students. During lecture, he is as serious as a heart attack and will boot out sleeping students.
Go to class every time. If you miss a day you miss out on tons of notes and all the tests are mostly based on his lectures. I learned alot, and he isn't boring, but I studied alot and still ended up with a B.
They must not keep negative reviews of this professor on here. I found his humor very lame at times, not clear, & digressed on every topic. He takes forever & a half to grade test & return them. He promised the class he would have the test graded & posted on campus cruiser before the last day to drop & didn't. This man can not keep his word.
this teacher is ridiculous. if u ask him any type of question he always has a smartass comment to answer it. if u attempt to go to the bathroom, he will make a scence in the class bout it. it takes him forever to grade the stupid tests! his notes are not clear at all & his test are more in depth then any of his notes. HORRIBLE TEACHER!!!!
3 words "DO NOT TAKE". i think this is the longest, boringest, & hardest class at tcc. mr downs lectures the whole period n sometimes even goes over the class time. u really have to take good notes. his test are super hard ,plus he makes u read a whole novel n more borring articles :(
Downs is a pretty good teacher. His class does require attendance since the tests come from his lectures. His tests come in two forms, multiple-choice or essay question (he gives you 4 or 5 essay questions ahead of time and picks 3 for the test) and you get to choose which kind of test you want to take. He gives extra credit.
Pro. Downs is one of the best teacher in TCC. He has a deep knowledge about history. If you take notes and follow the hands out, then you do not need a book nor do you worry about the test. If You do not show up in the class and fail to take notes, you will be in trouble. You follow his hands out with notes then his class is a piece of cake.
I LOVED HIM! I took him for Maymester where class was 5 hrs a day, and I could've stayed longer than that. You can really tell he loves what he teaches! His tests do require some preparation, but overall easy if you take good notes. Those people with negative comments must just expect everything to be handed to them. TAKE HIM! HE'S AWESOME!!
Great teacher! He is very willing to answer any questions to make a topic more clear. His tests can be difficult, but he gives you great study and note-taking guides. Just go to class, take good notes, and don't be stupid. Very enthusiastic about what he teaches and will keep you interested. I wish I had more classes to take with him!!
I just wanted to finish with my history classes, after having a bad experience last semester w/history1, so I decided to take the 10days class, I didn't expect to like this class. I found it very interesting and Mr. Dows is an awesome teacher!
He is a really good teacher. Makes class very interesting. Pretty easy if you actually go to class and take good notes. You do need to study for the tests a little, but he gives you everything you need to help you. Willing to answer any questions. You'll love him!
I took the Mini-semester (10 days) class, which I thought would be hard bc I'm not into History. Mr. Downs made it so interesting that I actually wished I had him for more then just 10 days. I learned more in 10 days then I did in one entire semester. He's awesome. He makes History so easy to understand. He really is a great teacher.
Prof. Downs is an awesome guy. If you think you hate history please take him he will change your mind. You must attend the lectures & be on time, but you will learn a great deal and you will enjoy doing it. Took his class for 1301 & refused to take anyone else for 1302. He is the best!
He's super knowledgeable about history and will keep you seated listening to his nonstop lecture from the start of class up until the very end. He provides outlines to the notes but you will still need to take detailed notes to study for his difficult tests. 3 tests for the entire semester and no other assignments. Miss class and miss lots of info.
This man is seriously brilliant. Look, if you don't like history at all, you are not going to love this class, however he's good at what he does and he makes it's interesting. His tests are hard if you do the multiple choice, I'd go with essay. I did make an A in this class, but I really had to work for it.
Prof. Downs is the most ridiculous teacher i've ever had. He does NOT know how to tell the truth! He said attendance wasn't necessary- yet every question on his test came from lecture. He said he'd grade the tests before drop date- like he even came CLOSE to that. Over the 10 day class he had us read 400+ pages online and a novel, DON'T take him!!
AMAZING teacher ! His lectures are never boring and he really knows what he is talking about ! The review prepares you for what exactly will be on the test & you get to pick if you want multiple choice or eassy !!! I really enjoyed his class and will be taking him again for HIST 1302 ! Pick him you wont regret it !
This guy knows a TON. I took honors class&will take his 1302. Best teacher;priority is that u learn. Quality over quantity. Don't miss the lectures or u'll miss loads of material that will b on test. I made an A w/out book, but I don't recommend trying it lol. He posts his lecture outlines online which is extremely helpful&will go the extra mile 4u.
Excellent Professor! He is very helpful and clear; lectures are extremely interesting and great. You will learn a lot from him. He gives 4 tests and lets you choose between multipule choice w/short id. or an essay question and gives good study guides, but his tests are a bit hard and tricky. I liked his sarcastic and dry sense of humor! Take him!
He lectures alot but then again if you love history you'll like him just read the notes and study guide and you'll do fine
Prof Downs is a wonderful teacher. He explains the material very well, and gives you tons of info. He allows you to choose between a multiple choice & short answer and essay exam. He goes over the material very quickly, so recording the lectures and typing your notes on a computer help a lot.
He's an amazing teacher, one of the best at TCC. However his grade just comes from 3 tests and his final is much harder then the first two (which caused me to fail this class)
I absolutely loved Mr. Downs! Going to class was a joy everyday, and I loved listening to his lecutres. I really learned something from him, and he really covers all areas of everything he teaches. I suggest taking the Essay exam, cause I got a 100 on it and only semi-studied. I highly recommend him, and will try to take him in the future!
I absolutly love professor Downs. I am not into history but he makes his lectures interesting and you will actually learn something. Listen take notes, do the review, and you are good to go.
don't see why people think his class is easy. his powerpoints consist of a sentance which he goes on about for a while. he requires you to read alot of material. i recommend taking the essay instead of the scantron test because most people that took the essay got a better grade. tough boring class would not take him again.
Excellent and very interesting professor! He explains the material very well and gives great test study guides. However, the tests are difficult, but if you attend every class and take excellent notes, you'll do fine. I also really like his dry and sarcastic sense of humor. I wish he taught my upper division history classes at DBU too.
A very interesting, knowledgeable teacher. He really knows his stuff! His class is based on only 3 exams, so taking good notes is a must. I'm taking him for HIST1302 because I genuinely learned a lot about a subject I had no previous interest in. I would definitely recommend him if you're willing to study.
Professor Downs has a world of knowledge and is very vivid in his descriptions of the past. As helpful as he is, you cannot breeze through this class. Be prepared to come to class everyday and take notes till your hands fall off. There are only three tests so be ready to study.
He knows what he talking about. He made history fun. I'm actually understand history when i took his class. Awesome Prof. Recommend this professor. If you missed a class you will missed tons of information. Take notes because it will be helpful on the exams. The exams is easy if you take notes and go to every class.
Downs is an amazing professor! It was honestly a joy to go to class everyday. Attendance is mandatory as the test is based mostly of his lectures. Don't rely on his powerpts to teach you because they don't tell you anything. I would suggest writing down EVERYTHING he says and taking the essay tests rather than scantron and you'll get an A for sure!
At first I really loved this class. The professor is very personable, but his grading is just not good. Nobody in my class was able to keep a B and majority had to drop. His tests never contained the material we were learning and it just made the class a bad experience.
No doubt, this man knows his history. He is a good professor and provides powerpoints so you don't get lost in everything that he is talking about. His tests are hard but personally, I thought the essay tests were easier. Not a very easy class, but if you take GOOD notes and come to class everyday, you'll be fine.
Love this professor!Down's lectures are always engrossing and offer great perspectives which makes writing essays very simple. That being said, it is essential in his class to include as much short hand writing/side notes of your own from the lectures. If you can deal with taking detailed notes and reading the textbook you'll be just fine ;)
Never in my life have I so thoroughly enjoyed a history class until I took Downs. He knows what he's talking about. Just attend all classes, take notes and you're good to go. Yes, you HAVE to study. He lets you choose btwn scantron or essay test, and after taking both 1301 and 1302, I've gotten A's straight across the board taking the essay test.
Here's how to get an A in his class. Print out the lecture notes and write the significance of any term that's not self explanatory. Be sure to have read the book up to the point covered for the test and bring a good cheat sheet on test day. Best history lecturer I've had. Listen and you'll learn a lot of interesting things you didn't know about.
Professor Downs is a nice person; his classes however are kick butt. I had 5 other classes to juggle when I was taking him, so his class was a definite challenge. He does allow students to pick either scantron or essay exam each time, he also allows a 3x5 index "cheat card" for every test including the final. He assigns ALOT of reading!
Professor Downs is a cool guy. There's a lot of assigned reading, but he makes history interesting with his lectures. There are 3 exams, Scantron or Essay, which can be a challenge, but he lets you bring a 3x5 note card for help. I actually enjoyed his history class, took him for 1301 & 1302.
Professor Downs is a nice guy. He has a really dry sense of humor, but is willing to answer any question you have about his class. His tests are pretty challenging! He makes you read alot! I was taking 2 other science classes plus a math class while taking him and his class was byfar the most challenging! Get ready to work!
Bad Teacher his quizzes are multiple choice yes, but his tests are based on your knowledge, you do have an option of taking scantron plus essay questions or straight essay I did everything, took notes, read the book HE IS NOT HELPFUL I DO NOT RECOMMEND HIM AT ALL!!!!
isn't too hard but it's a lot easier if you print off the lecture notes. you still should take some notes because it makes it easier when it comes to the test. he can be annoying. he talks the entire class and gets mad if you pack up your stuff even a minute early.
Read 2 books, had quizzes over them & them 3 exams. For the exams you can take either scantron & short answer or short answer & essay. You can use a note card. Before the exam he gives a reviw of exactly whats on both syles of exam.Recommend essay, because its easy to just write down your essay before the test, write it down word for word on the exam.
Great guy, great class. This was his first time offering World Civilization (I believe), and it was a great class. Tons of material, but not very difficult if you enjoy history. He let us use a ton of notes on the exams as well. If you can find this class, take it! (Just make sure you have the first half)
He is an awesome teacher, all u have to do is go to class, enjoy his teaching and make sure u take notes, he gives a review for exam and also a quiz before exams to help you focus on things u hadnt paid attn to. Overall, he's the besttttttttttttttttttttttt
Took his western history two first which was easy and made an a in. but this time i took his wes his part 1...yea he changed the hws to were you have to make a good grade their not just completion.
I believe it was his first year of world civilization so I don't blame him for how unorganized things were. He missed a lot of days in which we had to make up ourselves through reading. Quiz's are done online and are easy with studying. EXAMSSSS are really hard. you must know 100% of the material and not just key points.
All around, a great instructor. If you pay attention in class and take notes, you should have no problem getting an A. He offers a choice of scantron or essay for the tests. Scantron tests were mainly multiple choice, with a short-answer section and usually a map or two. You will need to know the material, but he makes it easy.
He is very down-to-earth and teaches so well that if you're taking notes and paying attention then you'll grasp the material and excel on the tests. We had to experiment with this My History Lab unfortunately but neither us the class or he the teacher like it so it was a mutual dislike of the software. His class though was very well taught by him.
He posts the powerpoints in shared files, which makes attendance not mandatory really. He is okay.. he is very opinionated. But, grades are easy, tests are very easy.
I got an A in his class. the lectures are interesting. The lectures can belong but it is very clear and organized. He had notes online & powerpoints in sharefile. Let's you use an index card on exams. He offers scantron exam or essay exam. I recommend him.
This is the first time in my life that I LOVE history. He is the best. material are clear and easy to understand. take notes and review them for exams and quizes and you'll be fine. he posts powerpoints in shared file which is very helpful. TAKE HIM!
He is very slow on grading and putting grades in. He will take up to 3 weeks getting papers back. There is a lot of writing to do. But his tests aren't difficult. You can either take scantron or essay test, and he lets you use note cards. Overall not a bad professor.
Fairly easy class, notes/attendence are key to passing. Lectures can be long, a couple writing assignments, but overall Downs was a good teacher.
Prof Downs is a great teacher.. you have to pay attention. his tests are demanding, they are designed to make you study. He uses power points that he lectures on. I didnt need to use the book. He had 2 writing assignments to get an A Take NOTES he let us use a 4x6 note card for tests type your notes and take the essay his scantrons can be tricky
He is an amazing teacher! I am taking him for 1302 and 2311 right now. He gives you powerpoints, and I use my laptop in class to add onto notes, and when the tests come you can use a 4x6 note card. On another note, 2311 is a hard class by itself. He covers all the work, but I have noticed the essay test is much easier than scantron.
Great teacher. His lectures are SOLELY lectures, so it gets kind of boring, but if you take great notes you will do spectacularly well on his tests, which aren't even that difficult. He obviously enjoys talking about history and he has a dry sense of humor about everything. Love him.
I think he's awesome! Never have I liked history (and understood it) until this class. Just wish I would have done more of the readings. He can just relate historic events to the big picture, which helped me out.
Made history easy to understand and interesting. Knows so much information it's amazing; he is passionate about what he teaches. His quizzes are pretty much what is talked about in class. As long as you pay attention you will be fine. As for the tests you will need to do a lot of reading, don't fall behind you will get a good grade in his class.
Pay attention in lecture + take a good note what he's saying + read book ( that will help his ppt note make sense) = A ( to me). I easily fell asleep when he was teaching. Make a good note card for the test and you will be fine. I took all scantron test and made all A's. I'd rather to take Mr. Salas.
Best history teacher. Mr. Downs is very understanding, works with you if you have problems. Just NEVER miss a class, print the notes, take good notes and you'll be good. Essay exams are easier than scantron.
BEST HISTORY TEACHER EVER! I hated history and didnt understand it until I took his world civ. class. Hes very understanding as long as you show up for class and he can see you're trying. His tests are pretty easy if you do exactly as he assigns and show up regularly. GREAT!=]
Super easy class. Just show up and pay attention. he gives you the powerpoints and outlines of the information for each powerpoint AND gives you the terms to study for the tests.
This was a great class! He made it very interesting to listen to and understand. Usually in history class I passed by memorization, but I actually learned in his class. Very easy, and if you take notes from the textbook, its a plus. Might not be fun but helps and earns you a better grade and understanding of the material. His jokes are funny too!
So easy!!! He lets you use a notecard on the tests, the quizzes are so easy, and he is really awesome as far as proffesors go! Take him!
His lectures are DETAILED and extremely informative. Likewise, he expects your essay exams to be very detailed (he's pretty picky with that). He allows note cards on tests. I wouldn't say this class is an easy "A," but I would recommend it nonetheless because he has such a wealth of knowledge to share with pupils.
This professor expects you to think and write one a college level. His tests are pretty easy: there's a scantron exam and an essay exam. He tells you exactly what's on the essay exam, so if you write it beforehand, it's very easy. There are 2 papers, each being around 4 pages long, and he assigns extensive readings. Very interesting and clear prof.
I LOVED this class! He is the best teacher I have ever had. I learned so much in this class. I am a history major so I was already interested in the subject but this class made me even more fascinated in history. I really recommend taking the class.
Nice man! Very understanding. Great teacher ever. Highly recommended.
I've never seen him get mad at to any students. he's very nice and he always wants to help his students. I love his class. I will take him again. Btw, he knows everything. If you have any questions, go ask him. He'll be bread to answer your questions. Great teacher!
Mr. Downs! BEST HISTORY PROFESSOR EVER. His power-points are made by HIM his lectures are profound and so knowledgeable and I learned SO much in this class. I recommend those who are not history fans take is class because he will make you love it!
Professor Downs is a great guy, superb lecturer, and compassionate teacher. If you need assistance, he's there for you. I would definitely suggest taking his class.
What a great teacher. I took him as a Maymester and class and wish I had taken him for an entire semester! He's very knowledgeable and passionate about History and presents it in an interesting way. I definitely recommend taking him!!
I highly recommend Professor Downs. He is extremely knowledgeable and eager to share that knowledge. He has a very good rapport with his students.
He is the BEST!! I loved his class so much heck I even miss it. He is clear on what he wants, allows a notecard, and he makes his own powerpoints (which are awesome) Just go to class, take extra notes, and study for your exams. This class was a bit hard but it was really enjoyable. TAKE HIM!!
I took him for Honors History. There were only 1 long research paper, 2-3 tests, and 25 minutes presentation and some light reading. Easy! I love it. I love the way he taught the class. He is the best. When my kids grow up someday, I'll send them to TCC--just to take his classes. He's a real Historian. He knows a lot. I highly recommend his class.
Took him for Wintermester, and he was really great. You get to choose between scantronessay exams! Choose Essays, there's more leniency because he grades easy! He also lets you use a notecard for exams as well. Made an A, but you have to study and take notes! Do not procrastinate!
For a wintermester course, this class was long but useful. He doesn't drop you if you don't go, but the class is pretty interesting so I would go.
My favorite professor by far and I have never been a fan of History. His lectures keep you engaged. They are very clear and interesting! He gives the option to take multiple choice or essay exams. I would recommend taking the essay exams. Highly recommend this professor!! Amazing!
I've taken a couple of history classes at TCC, but this one is by far one of the best. Mr. Downs is very knowledgeable and passionate about history. He sets his expectations and grading criteria very clear. Go to class and take good notes, easy A! His lectures are never boring. He makes it fun and interesting. Definitely recommend.
Professor Downs knows what he is talking about, but he is not the best professor. I often find myself swamped in work. The tests are not easy. He gives you 100+ terms to memorize and lets you bring a notecard. I do not enjoy this class at all. If he does not finish a lecture he posts the rest as a podcast on blackboard. It is very boring.
He assigned a book about golf that was based on an ancient text. when said i was having trouble reading it he said "Why? Cause it's not a romance novel?". Just because i am a 21 year old female does not mean he needs to be chauvinistic and rude because the book he assigned was so dry i wanted to read the original text in the original language!!!
He's a good professor and nice. He's clear about whats expected. As long as you take notes and study you should be fine. I would definitely recommend him, you will learn a lot.
Excellent History Teacher
Makes you fascinated and interested by his lectures. Don't buy book, wont use. Tests are easy as long as you study. AMAZING LECTURES! I'm definitely taking him again! Funny, and pulls you in and makes you want to go to class for his lectures. Class goes silent when he speaks, you can feel his passion. RECOMMENDED!
I took this class as a 2 week winter class. I was very worried that I would be overwhelmed by the load of information because it was a history class but it was not as bad as I thought it would be. You can either pick a multiple choice test or an essay tests. Tests were not too difficult and the professor is passionate about the subject.
Took his hybrid class which was his first time. Was unorganized, but handled problems well. Gives great lectures that are interesting, but you have to work for your grade. Write down almost everything he says in his lectures, and you'll do fine. Gives you option of essay or scantron exam, but essay is easier since you can write outline on notecard!
I loved this class! Professor Downs gives great lectures and his test are straight forward. His class is really interesting and I would take him again. He post power points online so you can look over them- everything is online. Only test and one paper. Could not get any better than that!
This professor talks about history as if he were there in the moment. He's kind of a smart Alic sometimes but he's also funny. He lectured everyday. Not too boring. His quizzes are easy if you do the homework. His tests are challenging. He is a good professor and knows what he is talking about.
I took him for 1301 and now taking him for 2311. He's passionate about history and makes history interesting during lectures. 3 tests and 3 quizzes. The quizzes were easy as long as you do the homework. You get to choose between a scantron and essay test. Print PP notes before class and write everything he says in class. One of TCC's best teachers!
I took his blended class and he is the best teacher I have ever met. His lecture is very easy to understand and not boring at all. Listen his lectures, take note, do homework and assignments, you will pass with an A. I'd recommend the essay format on tests. No books, and no extra credit.
Mr. Downs is a great instructor. HIs lectures were very detailed and he posts the power points online for review. He gives the option of essay exams or multiple choice tests which is awesome! He also allows notecards for the tests which are a great benefit. Very funny guy that is passionate about what he does! I would definitely take again!
If you're religious, do NOT take a class with him. You WILL be insulted everyday. He mocks religion on a daily basis. He gets upset/annoyed if you use the term "bless you" after someone sneezes and overall is just a very blunt atheist. It's extremely offensive and hurtful. If he could just stop with the negative comments it would be a great class.
Lectures are long and the information is very easy to forget. Tests are hard even though he lets you bring a flash card. Reading the textbook is a must, it will really help you understand the material better.
He's an awesome professor. Very laid back.
He is an amazing history teacher. His lectureS are very helpful because it seems as if he witnessed these civilizations. You don't have to do homework, but if you do, you can use it on your quizzes. I recommend getting the book, it will help so much. He has an easy grading system and is laid back.
GREAT GREAT GREAT! Whatever you do take the essay for the test and not the scantron! He's super sarcastic and cynical, but in a good way. Hope to have him for 1302.
Professor Downs is a great professor, I learned many things in his Western Civilizations class. You will need the book for the homework assignments. He gives essay or scantron tests, most people suggest essay but I took the scantron tests easily. He should change up his teaching method occassionally because lectures can get boring.
I took him on an honors level and the class was based on tests and essays. He lectures all class period and his tests are solely based on the lectures, so take good notes or else. He is lenient in the essays but he grades the tests on a stricter level. I always went to his office hours. He is definitely one who loves to talk a lot.
Students who took essay version of his exams did a lot better in the course than those who took the MC in my experience. I took the MC but the free response (definition) portion on the MC test will still weigh a lot more. He's more lenient to the essay takers. He also lets you use a note card on both essay & MC. Oh & Quizzes are easy, same as HW!
He's a great teacher, however get prepared to do lots of notes and many of them by yourself outside of class.
Took the blended class and definitely is an easy A. We have homework to turn in and a quiz to take every class.
I took this class online. 15 discussion boards, 1 PowerPoint, and 1 essay. You gotta read, 1 disscuison board each week. He seems to be very knowledgeable. You have to put in a little effort for an A, you can't just slack off. The textbook is online for free. He takes forever to grade, and doesn't tell you exactly why you received that grade.
Professor Downs' class was great. His lectures are interesting and engaging, I wish classes were longer! Homework is easy and followed along while reading the chapters. Quizzes are taken directly from the homework. His tests are based on the lectures given in class and his power points so you need to be there.
Professor Downs was great! I enjoyed every bit of his World CIvilization class, his knowledge and passion really shows through in his lectures. He offers you a choice of multiple choice or essay exams (I tried both and thought they were equally difficult) I would take him again.
I took prof. for a 5-week online class and it was tough to keep up. Every two days, he has assignments due early in the morning. He does provide a lot of info on every topic, even some recorded lessons, which is great, but again, hard to do before the due date. Overall, great teacher, just stay on top of your assignment schedule. Textbook is free
**SUMMER CLASS** Online summer class, so 16 weeks was crammed into 5 weeks. There's a lot of reading, with 2 discussion board posts due every other day. One PowerPoint project and one essay. No tests. Very easy if you do the required reading. Issue - he is a slow grader. Class is over with 12 ungraded assignments. Great way to knock out a class!
Great professor. Its obvious he is passionate about history. Heavy lectures, but he makes them interesting. He is slow with getting grades put in, but with quizzes we grade them in class. Just make sure you show up to class.
Get ready to read!!!!! I mean it its a lot of reading as well as writting about what you learned. I took this class online by the way and I had zero test or nothing which was great. Two major assignments and the rest where chapter based grades. Reading is the key and there will be a lot , it was very great lecture and you learn more from it.
Took his honors class. Most of the class is lecture-so take good notes. We read 2 books-easy reads and had to write a paper. Had 3 total tests (all are essays-make sure to be prepared and know what you're talking about). Had 1 ppt. presentation. He grades fairly easy. However, he takes FOREVER to grade. Overall would take again b/c I learned a lot
Pretty easy class. Mine was online. Discussion boards were easy. He let us use a free online textbook. If you do the reading and discussions with classmates, you WILL pass.
Good teacher. There is a major project (paper and powerpoint) and a few written exams. I liked him and his lectures, but there is a lot of material to cover, even MP3 lectures to listen to at home that is tested on. Supposed to be US history from pre Columbus to Civil War, but his main focus is just slavery. Not what I was expecting but whatever.
Excellent professor! There is not much homework, and he provides quizzes and reviews to make sure you are completely prepared for a test. Very interesting lectures, engaging and passionate about what he teaches. He is friendly, kind, and open-minded about what you believe in and what your opinions are. Got an A in his class with no difficulty
Great professor, 2 essays and a final essay.
I loved loved loved this class! Downs gives you plenty of time. Great feed back and absolutely passionate about what he teaches and makes sure you understand. Lots of class room engagement with other students. Highly suggest.
His textbook was online and free, which is always a positive. I learned alot more during this class then I had previously. Everything made sense and was explained so well that come exam time, everything felt almost too easy.
I looked forward to his lectures every class period, he has a way of breaking it down while still packing lots of information! Also he remains objective and doesnt shove his views into his teaching, very rare these days. Didnt need a textbook but he offered it free online if you really want it. Easy going and friendly guy, just show up and try!
Professor Down is definitely not the type of Professor that keeps up with grades on time. His class is pretty easy to take, although there is reading every week. The chapters arent long, and the textbook is online for free.
Professor Downs lectures in an interesting and involving way. I took three History classes with him and I wish I had more to get. I graduated! He makes learning a pleasurable experience and has a positive attitude toward life in general. He respects students and makes the time and effort to know the students and their needs! You MUST take him!
He stopped allowing us to use notecards. No Quizzes, No multiple choices, essay based exams for honors students. He requires you to be "specific" so it requires quite an amount of memorization. You have a book analysis and presentation due at the end. DO ATTEND HIS LECTURES! Or else you'll have a HARD time passing. He talks a lot tho
He has really long lectures, not everything on the board is what you write down. you have to copy down some things and listen for other things at the same time. you are only graded by quizzes and exams. if you are not a tests and quizzes for the whole semester type of person, do not take this class.
His lectures are very informative and I wouldn't recommend skipping class. Tests can be tough, so study your notes, powerpoints, and ESPECIALLY the Howard Zinn chapters he has you read. A good challenge, but a proper amount of studying will definitely make this passable. Take his class if you have even a tiny bit of interest in history.
Professor Downs is a relatively good professor. I have him online. He gives us a lesson with what we need to read, and then we have to write a 5 paragraph essay and what we've learned. It's pretty easy but if you don't like to write then do not take his class. For me, it was an easy A. Only thing is, he doesn't update lessons or grades on time.
I definitely recommend him for the online class. It was mainly just a five paragraph discussion board every week and then one PowerPoint and one paper for test grades. He graded super late but he was an easy grader. He provides the book and if you just read a bit and get the general idea of the chapters to write the paragraphs you will be fine.
Took online for wintermester. Assignments are easy (short, simple 5 paragraph) essays covering 3 points of your choice in the reading. Then you answer two questions and comment on 3 posts. One presentation and a larger essay and that's it. I enjoyed the class. He is an easy grader. I think he just wants you to participate/engage more than anything.
Pretty straight forward online class. Gives clear grading criteria and assignments are easy but the discussion posts didn't have a prompt so it's up to you to come up with the content of your post. Read, write, respond to other posts (he was a stickler about this!) and you will pass. Slow to grade, slow to reply to emails but no tests or quizzes.
Mr. Downs is a really great teacher and he makes history super interesting. The class is lecture heavy but if you take good notes (and review them daily) then you'll pass the class easily. There were 3 quizzes, 3 exams, and one writing assignment. He's kind of a late grader but overall great prof, and great class.
I did HIST 1302 online over the summer. If you're simply taking US history to met a requirement (like I was), I'd try to find someone else. He assigned much more work than the online HIST 1301 professor I took. I'm giving him a high rating because I believe the other comments about him being good in person, and I wouldn't want to detract from that.
We have hw due EVERY 2 days, each one is divided to 6 posts! You only have access to them 2,3 days bfr, which is a very short period. Missing one would mean dropping your grade by a letter grade since he never gives full grade, his only excuse is that some people post 10 comments (which is extra). Plus we have 2 papers due in between the 2 days!!
I took his online class during the summer. There is a lot of work for this class. Every other day you have an assignment due. It is a 5 paragraph essay, 3 posts answering his questions, and 2 posts on other students posts. There is also a paper and a power point assignment. I personally think that was way too much work for a summer online class.
He is nice but be ready to read. It is not difficult but alot of work 5 paragraph 250 minimum each discussion board and which you have to come with your own prompt, 1 ppt, and 1 major paper participation is mandatory and he is lenient on your essay gives good feedback.
I would not recommend then 4 wk course. There's 6 part discussion posts due every other day, which are not easy. There's a paper as well as a power point you have to do at some point. He doesn't grade even a fourth of your work until the class is over, so you won't know how you're doing. Needed to work on stuff every single day just to keep up.
It was three months into the semester and he still hadn't graded a single assignment. Ridiculous amount of reading each week. Same 6 part discussion post each week. He just puts zero effort into the course sorry
class primarily writing "analyses" overviewing your OPINION on the subject matter, responding with a minimum of 50 words twice, and answering 3 questions. Powerpoint was easy, Essay subject was easy. You are mostly writing in this class, you cannot view other discussional/analyses must post 1st. Email prof about concerns on grades hes honest
There is a LOT of repetitive reading from multiple sources, and you have to write an essay EVERY WEEK using each source and submit it before being able to finish the rest of the 6-part assignment. Not a tough grader but is a VERY slow one. Not a hard class, just follow instructions and give yourself a lot of time.
I took this instructor HIST1301 and 1302. Super easy class. No test or quizzes. Read the chapter summaries and skim through the other links he posts and write a 250 word response each week. Plus answer 3 discussion questions he posts and respond to 2 classmates. Pretty much all participation. He is slow to grade but an easy grader.
I took Professor Downs History 1301 and was excited to take him again for History 1302. He is very clear on what he expects out of you. As long as you do the work you will pass.
He is a very good Professor, and I would take him again. All you have to do is read and write a 1,000 word easy on the power point, and from the book you have to read. The book is the history in the past in other country's. There no test at all, and all you have to do is write a good easy about the point he gives you.
Prof.Downs was understanding and caring. If you are struggling in any way or form, definitely check his office hours and email him about it. If you can't submit your essay or PowerPoint project, make sure to at least complete all 15 discussions and quizzes. Those are the majority of your grade. Reading and understanding the materials go a long way.
Easily one of the best professors I've had. The class was all lectures, but it was interesting and engaging. I would definitely recommend his class to someone unsure about taking U.S. History.
Pretty good lectures, although he isn't very enthusiastic about America if you care about that. Mostly graded by quizzes and tests, although there are two papers. Not hard if you just study.
Hes a cool professor he like what he does, he just takes too long to grade.
Good teacher, very passionate, i love history and he clearly does as well. Only downside is he takes FOREVER to grade making knowing where you stand extremely difficult. History1301 is very heavily opinion based so get ready for some class discourse!
Professor Down was great, I hated history and still made and A, had a total of like 16-20 test for an 8week class takes best 10, real understanding read the material he posts take notes in class and you'll be fine.
honestly pretty boring and a bit confusing, quizzes every week is a little much in my opinion and hard to take notes when he doesn't really say what's important and what's not
He stopped teaching our second semester for "giving us time". He's not a bad teacher, but we haven't learned anything for a month.
He is a great teacher. I took an online class and he provided all the materials needed to do the assignments. All you have to do is turn in the assignments and quizzes he gives. His class did not stress me too much. Take him if you can.
During second semester, he gave up on teaching his class because the students weren't "paying attention" to his lectures. I wouldn't recommend taking this professor's class because he doesn't put any effort and lacks the passion. He had a rather negative and pessimistic attitude when it came to criticizing others or when a student criticized him.
