This guy is the Shiznit. His tests are curved nicely, but not easy. He makes everything pretty clear and is a very good lab instructor. Makes lectures fun,um-k
If at all possible take a class with him. he makes even hard topics seem easy. excellent prof

He is a very laid-back and nice, however his lecture style just leaves you confused and more times than not--unprepared for an exam. He does help if you go to him tho. He is fun in Lab.
His lack of organization really bugged the hell out of me. The lecture notes were hand written and from text books the class did not have. The text books we did have were crap. Labs were confusing and always seemed to go over the allotted lab time.
Having just finished the standardized final, I have never felt more stupid in my life. I feel like I have not gained anything from this class except frustration and an increased stress level.
Not a profeesional individual witht he interactions with the students. He is not a person that can transit knowledge to others easily.
If you enjoy frustration and like to feel like a moron, this is the professor for you. ENJOY!
The tests are hard...but he is willing to help. Just don't be afraid to ask a question in class...the more you are involved in the lectures...the better you understand it.
His teaching skills stink. Worst professor I've had yet.
Class was fairly tough, but he was very helpful
Does a good job at this subject. Most students dont understand that chemistry takes more effort and time than other classes. He is very approachable and his door is always open.
Dvorak earned Ph.D and obviously knows something about chemistry. My argument is that even with Ph.D someone should not be considered one who cares about students, or, SCSU for that matter. Not prepared for labs! When asked a question(especially a deep question) can only say "I don't know." Fair, but then why go beyond that and discourage the stu
Like some other people have said, chemistry with a lab is going to be one of your classes that requires more work than other ones, like generals. Students should know this from the beginning. Dr. D's notes were very clear and he had help sessions before every test so there are no surprises. If you're confused, it's your responsibility to get hel
michael is an awesome professor, and just a cool guy. aside from his super-conservative views, he's a great guy. take him!
I would recommend taking Dvorak for a chem class. His notes and lectures are clear and concise. He addresses material not found in the textbook so reviewing class notes before exams is essential. Overall -- knowledgeable, good demeanor and interacts positively with students.
one word LAZY ok more words unwilling to teach and help the students
can be suprisingly unfair in grading. That was my only disappointment from Dr. D. He didn't seem to care about students, but then again, I don't think I would if I had to teach that class. Seems like a good prof and good guy otherwise...
Great professor...really cares but if you don't put effort into the class...you won't pass. Really understand the material and ask him questions. Print off notes puts a hole in my budget but it's worth it because some pictures are too hard to draw....recommend taking class with him!
Dr. D is really nice. The class isn't that bad, you just have to pay attention and the grading is awesome bc he curves. All of the notes are online, just go to class and you're good.
Dr.D, is Awsome!!! He is the capt. Picard of chemistry!!!
He is helpful enough but the final is near impossible. I talked to some people in my class an none of us could believe the difficulty. Def. get on his good side!
Very intelligent professor. He knows the material he is teaching, but at the same time expects the students to understand it right away. NEED TO DO THE OPTIONAL PRACTICE PROBLEMS IN THE BOOK!!This will help SO MUCH!take notes during lectures, and if you are confused, go talk to him,he helps students a lot outside of class.
Terrible teacher. Plays favorites. Tough material to understand tought by someone who cant articulate very well as well as not caring if you learn a thing or not. GENERALLY that is not a good thing. In this case....its a really BAD thing. Wish someone smart and knew how to teach and cared if you learned was teaching the course!
Awesome professor, he actually takes time to help students out of class, even if it is a study session on the weekend, before a big test. If you make an effort to learn in his class, you will be rewarded for it.
Great prof, very helpful. He wants you to learn and understand.
a great professor..who can make u clear with jokes..BOBS ur uncle!!!
Very good instructor, probably the best Chem. instructor SCSU has.
good boy
Awesome prof. Takes the time outside of class to help any student who really wants to learn. Is even willing to arrange study sessions outside of class time. This guy rocks and made me love chemistry!!
Works hard to help students learn fairly tough material, but will eventually (and reasonably) lose patience with students who don't seem to give a damn. Read the book, do the optional homework, print out his lecture notes and ask if you don't understand something. One of his tests was tough, but he curved very fairly. Excellent professor!
Dr. D is amazing. He will go out of his way to say "hi" and tries to have good relations with his students. He cares alot and knows alot about chemistry. It would be hard teaching a beginning chem class (boring) but he does a good job at keeping you awake and interacting everyone. Grades fairly! Great guy!
The worst class I've taken at SCSU. Nothing was really straightforward and the time I invested seemed useless. I got a D and I get B's consistently. If I could do it again, I would be patient and take it with another professor.
Nice guy but should not be teaching this class. Only had a couple of homework type questions on the test. Whenever I went to ask him questions he could not clarify the problem. Labs were horrible. He could never tell me why my lab grades were bad and didn't give any extra help for the grades. Final test on material that was never tested before.
Great guy..Is very friendly..Tells u joke to wake people up.Chem 450 is a tough class but if you go through his lecture notes and book you will be ok. Focus more on the homework problems for exams.
Dont take him for 350
Tells too many jokes all the time. Runs through only power point slides and test ends up being everything but the power points. I want to take this class again with a better teacher pehaps
Dr. D ONG ha ha great professor great teachin techincs very friendly lots of jokes interesting class take 210 only with him
this guy rants.. totally wierd but he is an awesome teacher.. sometimes he can be a jerk, but other than that, he is an awesome teacher though.. except he goes to fast and he rants way to much!!! has some faves too, i'd def. take another class with him :)
Superb!
One of the better chemistry professors at SCSU. Difficult class if you have not had any experience with chemistry before. Has good analogies to relate chemistry to the real world but does ramble. Chooses favorites but don't be fooled that you'll get a good grade if you are one. Very difficult class.
Great Prof who really cares about students. Very willing to help students and open to questions during class. Sees the importance of taking time to make sure students understand the fundamentals. Recommend highly
I really like Dvorak, he is a genuinely nice guy, and is always willing to help those who need it. Reasonable about extending assignments too. Chemistry is a hard subject so it is difficult, but he curves tests to help us out with our grade which is nice. I will definetley take 211 with him
Very good, easy to understand, If you study at all you can pass with b+, doesn't penalize missed classes, allows you to "cook the books" on labs to get the correct results. would definatly reccomend to anyone.
What a great German! Wish he would speak it more. Always aggravate Mark Van Benthem alot.
GREAT Teacher. I took this class during the summer. It was fast paced and difficult, but Dvorak makes sure everyone feels comfortable with the material before moving on. VERY helpful teacher, so if you have questions ask!
He drifts in and out when speaking and he doesntt pay attention to the whole class. He also depends on the book and OWL way too much. Also the tests are way to unfair when compared to how he teaches the book material. I suggest not taking him for this low level biology.
Boring and tests are too hard and doesn't teach the homework.
Dr. Dvorak is a very nice guy but he doesn't know how to effectively teach a class. Going to lecture is pointless because he always talks about stuff that isn't relevant to the class and doesn't clearly explain concepts. You will get way more out of going to lab, reading the book, and doing the homework.
Farthest thing from environmental chem. This class sounded cool, but this prof gets do distracted and off topic we never finish on time. The prof also doesn't test on anything he teaches, im not quite sure where it comes from. Class average is an D/F on tests. Don't take this class, save yourself, i wish i would have.
When it comes to this guy, he is terrible at explaining everything, he has no what he is teaching and his test are way too hard. Our class averages a D/F on all the test we have taken. Make sure you dont take him for any Chemistry I wish i never would have.
This class is extremely difficult.. It is a 105 chem class and I am honestly shocked with the amount of students in this class that are failing... If this class continues to be like this i would be shocked if anyone passed. 1. he is never prepared 2. talks to himself half the block 3.tests are impossible 4. owl is awful 205 chem students cant do it
The class was way too hard. He started teaching like we didn't know an atom from an apple and then somehow catapulted us into super complex organic chemistry. He has big online assignments that aren't announced in class, super hard tests, and a big class size. It's no shock most of the class is failing. And he blames the class for not doing well.
He's really a great professor, possibly in disguise. Some say he gets off topic, but he's really just interested in science, and attempts to help his students understand the bigger picture. He's intelligent, fair, and a very reasonable teacher. One of the best I've had. If you're serious about science, you'll do just fine.
Worst teacher I've ever had. DO NOT take this class with him. This isn't even supposed to be an introductory chem class, it's supposed to cover the tenth goal area and my chem major boyfriend couldn't help me with the OWL, which is ridiculous beyond all reason. This guy can't answer a question or stop referring to mother nature. Avoid at all costs.
Going to class is pretty much mandatory, especially later in the year where he gives credit.I did all the extra credit and all the assignments. Most of the concepts were EXTREMELY tough to understand because he is unclear in lecture which led me to be unclear on the book material. He incorporates calculus theories,I felt linear theories were appropria
He can be a decently difficult teacher and can sometimes be a little spacey but overall I would recommend him, if you actually want to learn. He will make sure you know your stuff but is not overwhelming. Good with giving you analogies so you can understand everything. I found him to be pretty willing to help if needed.
I have to say, I just started this class with him not very long ago, but he has been such a huge help so far. He is very approachable, not socially awkward like some say, and very laid back. He makes an intimidating subject seem not so bad. He loves what he does, and you can tell. He goes out of his way to help his students that show dedication.
Mike was one of the best teachers that I have had since coming to this school, he is very easy to talk to and he makes the subject more fun. I would recommend that you take CHEM with him.
He hasn't taught this class for three years, and it shows in his teaching skills and his ability to comprehend his own lecture. He thinks getting a 60% on an exam is good. He is hard to get a hold of for help. He also makes a person seem stupid when they ask a question. I am definitely going to avoid him as a professor if i can.
hard to reach for help and when you do he makes you feel like an idiot ... not taking another class with him
Going to class did not help, all his lectures are on his website which is outdated. He would mention things that would be on the exams, but failed to show a proper way of doing them. Worst teacher I've had.
One of the best college professors I have ever had. Don't know why everyone says he's bad, he is very easy to understand. Very easy to relate to, and if you know your concepts tests will be easy.
I was advised to take this as a freshmen because of my ACT score and as a requirement for my major. Horrible decision. The assignments are long, hard and online, the tests cover way too much material and are also very hard. Lectures are boring, he is hard to get ahold of, makes you feel stupid, and as a former A student, I test an avg D.
Dvorak is a great teacher overall. He knows what he is talking about. You will do well in the clas if you attend lecture, do the homework, and most importantly read the book and take notes on it. It is a difficult class that requires a lot of effort.
I would recommend taking Dr. Dvorak for this class. His exams are extremely difficult, but he curves the class overall, so if you put in the work, you will do fine. He is a good teacher who knows what he is talking about.
Do NOT take this class. The first day of class Dvorak told us we were all stupid bc we had to take this course. The content wasn't unmanageable but it's a LOT of independent learning. I can see how a higher level course would be better with him as he does appear smart and personable... just above 105, which is understandable. Just be careful!
Skips going through examples because "you should have learned this in high school" (high school for me was 5 years ago)and its a 100 level class so no prerequisites required but makes it hard to keep up. Long online homework. Doesn't explain concepts very thoroughly. Class average on last test was 61% and he said that he was impressed.
DON'T TAKE THIS PROF!! He isn't clear about any of the homework assignments or whats on the tests. (we all bombed the first exam!)he laughs at you if you don't understand something, talks down to you. He acts like you are an inconvenience to him.
Dvorak's lectures have NOTHING to do with anything that will be on the exams that he gives. It's all reading out of the book, and a lot of teaching yourself. Lectures are a great time to catch up on sleep or any other homework because there's truly no point in attending the lectures. Labs are decent, but explanation isn't very clear.
Dvorak does not work with those who don't understand some concepts. He makes you feel dumb if you do not have the answer to a question that YOU'VE asked him. If you have no history in Chemistry, better fasten your seat belt.
In lectures he goes off in tangents about his personal life, or whatever is on his mind at that second. The lectures rarely expand on anything in the book. Lots of internet homework, almost every day. And if you don't understand what the book had to say don't expect to pass the homework. Labs aren't explained either. Just what is said in the manual
I knew coming into this class it was going to be difficult. I feel if I would have had a different professor, I would have done better for sure. The material is really tough, not an introductory chemistry class whatsoever. You teach yourself, really! Dr. Dvorak was not too helpful and was intimidating. But he does curve everything well at the end.
We had four tests and a final all semester. This made tests hard if you just started studying the week before the test. At the beginning of the semester, we were told we could buy a book that would greatly help us on the final, because the final is written by the ACS, NOT by the prof. Buy this book, it's roughly $30, and will help like crazy.
Don't take dvorak if you have a choice. Gets sidetracked easily and talks about his personal life during lectures. Does not explain concepts well. Dodges questions when asking for clarity. I didn't learn anything last semester from him, I always had to seek help from other professors tutors.
Dr. Dvorak was a great professor in my opinion. I often found myself looking forward to his lectures and what hilarious stuff he would come up with. He is the MASTER of analogies, and will use many during every lecture. I found these to be immensely helpful in making more difficult concepts more clear.
Takes his time explaining topics which can be both helpful and dreadfully boring. Some of the stuff he talks about in class is pointless and over explained. Very helpful and can be funny, usually just cheesy jokes. He will learn your name and know at least one thing about you by the end of the semester. Tests are very hard.
His lectures are not bad to go to, the problem is that he does not teach what the tests or labs are on. And for a lower level class he is way to difficult with everything. Only sometimes he helps, often he says to students, "well you should have been prepared" but he did not teach us very well. frustrating.
He gives good lectures but they are not in-depth enough and he has a very monotone voice, so you will probably get bored. Attendance is not mandatory, and all of the things you'll learn from his lectures you can learn from the homework he gives online. Tests are fairly difficult and the final is 90 questions, also pretty difficult. He's funny too.
Really hard class. Came to class every time but the only reason I passed was thanks to the book and online Youtube videos... Im a straight A student and go my first ever F on an exam. Also, I did horrible on the other exams and I was above average. Don't recommend at all, unless you want to get stressed out.
In order to get a good grade for this class be precise when writing lab reports, do all of the online homework and text book reading (which didn't take long at all), and take clear and thorough notes in class. The best thing you can do for this class is over all don't give up. he does grade pretty hard but can tell if you're working for it.
Charismatic and humorous but also very focused and thorough in his lectures. He makes labs much more fun than you would expect and is very approachable. Assigns a lot of homework and lab reports are lengthy, but everything is done for your understanding and is done with commitment. Entire class is put on a bell curve.
Best teacher so far for my freshman year
Let's do some math on the grading. Homework is about 12% of your grade, labs are about 15%, and exams are 60%. He's an awesome professor, but he's a strict grader and the exams are all about understanding the material. However, sometimes he does give students second chances, or gives you a grade curve, depending on your grade.
exams, lectures, homework, labs are NOT relevant. exams weight 60% of your grade, but most of the materials on the exams are not from the homework, lectures and labs, so you cant really study for the exams. he does a very poor job on explaining the materials, when ask to clarify a concept, he dodges and says, well talk about it but will never do
he is the most unorganized professor i have ever had. feels like he doesnt like the subject hes teaching. he never comes to class prepared. he basically read off his unorganized powerpoint in lecture. believe me, you cant study for exams from his powerpoints. if you value the money you paid, take the class with a different teacher if you can
Lectures have a lot of needed information, even if they can be boring. However, he is super approachable and a really good person in general. If you get on his good side it can help you a lot in class.
I used to love chemistry and he ruined it for me. He knows what he is talking about, but he cannot teach it. He makes you feel stupid by saying how easy everything is when it is not. The online homework takes a very long time to do so be prepared to spend time on in. He does not do many example problems in classs so be prepared to teach yourself.
His exams are very hard! 4 tests each worth 15% of your grade-difficult because we didn't do many example problems in class. 4 As in the class out of 70 students. However, he's actually a real nice guy once you get to know him. Once he helped me finish an entire lab assignment the day it was due. He also keeps students awake by using humor in class
Greatest quality of this professor is his ability to come up with great analogies to concepts that can be difficult. Besides that, lectures are typically boring if the material doesn't personally interest him, and he also frequently digresses into different worlds. 60% of the grade is from 3 in-class exams graded on a curve. Overall easy class
Dr. Dvorak is a really nice person, his teaching was fine. Although, if you are a slacker, don't take his class. Attending class is extremely recommended, it is not required. Read the textbook, do the Aleks homework. Don't slack off. You will regret it.
He's disrespectful to his students. Almost like he wants his students to fail his class. His feedback is not helpful. Uses vulgar language in class as well as towards students. 10/10 would never take his class again. Wish this class was with a different professor. Felt like I didn't learn the things I needed to in order to succeed in the course.
Horrible class. Tests are super hard half essay and half multiple choice. Labs are super hard too and there is your knowledge assessment on lab. He grade you according to what he feels like. Even presentation on chemistry lab. He only wants you to work on his class 24 hrs.
I had to drop this class after our second exam. I felt that Dvorak made little effort to help me succeed in the class. I really struggled from the beginning, and when I tried to get in contact through email/office hours he was hardly ever available.
I took his class and it was a lot harder than it needed it to be, Aleks HW every 2 days with topics he hasn't taught yet, and his grading is horrendous by taking points off by the smallest detail. I WOULD RUN THE OTHER WAY if you have the option to do so.
I thought Chemistry was easy and fun to learn, but not after taking this class. He is one of the worst teachers I have ever had. ALEKS is frustrating to try to learn, and lectures are super confusing. He doesn't go over important topics in lectures for exams and exams & labs are super difficult. I would avoid having him as a teacher
The class is hard and he can be lame but explains the content well. Gives practice questions prior to the exam. Interact with students on one on one base. Friendly and caring. I'm comfortable with his way of teaching compared to my other prof.
Not a very good human, nor professor. You can tell he likes chemistry but wasn't meant to teach. He absolutely doesn't care about students. looks down on students A LOT. He expects you to be an expert on chemistry.
This professor seems like he doesn't care what students think or feel, doesn't care what grade they got. His lectures are confusing and there're somethings that are on the exam that he doesn't mention. He is very harsh on exams and especially labs. Avoid him all cost.
I dropped his class after he started a surprise last minute lab and the guy got in my face because I "wasn't measuring water correctly." He even proceeded to forcefully take and throw the beaker I had into the sink only because I didn't think the method of filling the container mattered. No longer felt safe to come back to that class.
I did not realize it was this bad. It is to the point he does not understand his own work and get's the answers wrong. He yelled at a girl due to her ankles showing and he yelled at how my sweatpants were to tight like leggings. He does not care for student's and makes you feel bad. The homework drops you points if you mess it up even once. AVOID!!
Prof forgot we had class today. How disrespectful of him, we pay for this class and he doesnt even show up. Still expects us to take an exam on thursday. AVOID THIS PROFESSOR HE IS NOT THE ONE TO MAKE YOUR LIFE EASY HE IS THERE TO RUIN IT.
one of the worst professors at scsu. absolutely no reason for this man to be tenured. doesn't care about students well being or learning in the slightest. we were supposed to have dr. cama and got stuck with dvorak. DO. NOT. TAKE.
Went to class to get compared from class chem210 saying we were the reason the test scores came back so low. He proceeded to tell us that WE need to focus better. There is to many try hard kids in this class for him to tell us that we needed to focus better. DO NOT TAKE HIM he does not know how to teach his own class and solve his own problems.
i dropped the course shortly after the first test. i was accepted into a different school and i've never been more excited to leave after taking dvorak. he is misogynistic, racist, and makes students feel as if they're not good enough to be in this field. AVOID.
I WILLINGLY put myself two semesters behind for my major so that I could avoid taking him for this class, thats how much I dislike him. He is a bully, who will talk down and belittle you, and will not acknowledge his failings as a teacher even when the whole class "did awful on the exam because we are lazy and unmotivated". Save yourself the time.
I took Dvorak's class last year, and it wasn't good. But geez, I didn't know it had gotten worse this semester. His lectures don't tie into the tests or Labs we were doing. He's disrespectful and doesn't care about what students think. Even the smartest people told me that they either failed or got a max C+. Avoid him and take it in the Spring.
I wish my advisor didn't put me in this class with him. Dvorak is a horrible professor and doesn't really care about his students. His lectures are sloppy and the examples he gives us are useless. Labs are hard and don't tell you what you did wrong and want you to figure it out yourself. Tests have nothing to do with the lecture or ALEKS.
Having Dvorak as my professor for chem has made me very upset. He does not explain his content well and his lectures have nothing to do with the exam. He changes his topic of the lecture instantly and talks about things that make no sense. I regret ever taking him and i'm disappointed that the school seems to not care about the actions of man.
I was sick for 2 weeks and asked if I could take the exam 2 DAYS later than scheduled. He said he was "quite disappointed in me." After getting scores back I noticed EVERYONE ELSE got an extra credit opportunity but me (he never mentioned it). His lectures are confusing (talks about random things), literally nothing good to be said about him. :((((
one of the most incompetent "educators," he has no idea how to teach and has no intentions of learning, if you want to learn and love chemistry he is not the one, I would rather be 1 year behind than take a course with this dude.
Being an A or B student you'd think I'd do okay in this class? Wrong, this professor was the worst one I've ever had my entire life. No one got above a 90 percent in his class and he has over 10 students drop his class. He never thought us what we needed to know and his exams made absolutely no sense. I'm shocked he hasn't been fired yet. AVOID.
I honestly don't understand why nobody likes him. I had some medical problems throughout the semester and he was understanding and willing to extend due dates/test dates for me. If you put in the effort, go to class and lab, and go to office hours when you need help, he's a good professor.
get on his good side!!! he is not the nicest but being on his good side will save you a little sanity. tests are hard but are also curved. make friends in this class and get comfortable not doing too well on tests.
Dvorak is a good professor that cares about the students learning. He teaches his lectures well and makes them quite understandable. As long as you pay attention in the class and practice what you learned on the homework assignments, you will be fine. He is strict on having the proper clothing in the lab, so make sure you follow the instructions.
So rude, and easily goes on tangents that have nothing to do with the class. I wouldn't wish having him as a professor on my worst enemy
hard to work with. does not follow a schedule, admitted to not knowing how to teach the class, decides then and there when things will happen. he gave us a 3 day notice on our exam once when we weren't even half way finished with the chapters meant to be on the exam. extremely cranky and unprofessional. a handful of students had to report him.
I would avoid this professor!! He was very dismissive to questions. He didn't actually teach the material just read off of slides. I basically learned this class from the textbook. He also didn't give us our grades until the end of the semester so we had no idea what our grades were until the end of the semester.
This class was okay until we got past gen chem... be prepared to teach yourself orgo. Not very organized. Extremely hard grader on tests, but there is a generous curve at the end. If he puts a smiley face or "nice" on all or most of your tests you'll end up okay. Only lab is mandatory but you'll definitely be on his good side if you go to lecture
just study before class , rushes things so its best if ur prepared for the materials
Dvorak's class is tough, but using unstuckstudy alongside the textbook can really help. Be prepared to put in the effort, and you'll get through it. Tests are challenging but curved, so don't be discouraged.
Emphasizes going to lectures, but there's one problem, this dude's lectures are drier than a sand dune in June. Goes on random tangents, and if you ask questions he sometimes makes you feel stupid. Very tough grader on labs and tests, even with an 18 point curve, many people failed. I watched A students struggle to get a C in this class.
I wrote 3 for difficulty because I thought the class was as hard as it should have been, he did not make it more difficult, but it is not an easy class. However, Dr. Dvorak is very helpful during office hours. He does not cover everything in lectures, so be sure to read book, and go into his office if you need help. His lectures are entertaining.
Worst Prof I've ever had don't take his courses
This class should not have been as hard as the professor made it. The class was graded on 4 exam and a final which were weighted 70% all together. 15% was labs and the other 15 was the homework. This professor was a tough grader on the lab and would take away points for anything. The exams would have random questions that he never talked about.
