Never a dull moment during his lectures. Makes learning very interestig.
Has a sense of humor to make the subject more interesting. I like his lecures.
Very fun, outgoing. Don't be afraid to go over exam results with him if you disagree with a question
he's the man. i went stoned a few times, and cried i was laughin so hard. real funny. real interesting.
AWESOME prof. best I've ever had!!!
tests mostly from lecture
Too many tangents, not very clear, hillarious man, i luagh too much but dont know what the tests are about. He needs less comedy and more teaching too many fing tangents
hilarious man, reminds me of adam sandler, take his class!!! hes awesome
One of Pitt's finest professors. a very good teacher with some of the best lectures you will attend! A very nice man!
Great teachers! He wants you to do well. Very Helpful and always intresting. You won't ever have to sleep in his class
Onesided viewpoint. Agree with him and you will do fine. Lectures are interesting though he does go on about his opinions on current events.
He's an easy teacher, but his lectures are sometimes confusing. Recitation is very helpful with that. He's a nice, down-to-earth guy who makes class fun.
Very amped on the material due to the group project. Lecture was good....recitation was horrid, the TA was a jerk.
Dr. E's class was engaging and fun, and he encouraged students to not learn useless facts but rather to apply their knowledge to larger issues. The TA, Anindita, was horrible. She was always late and ill-prepared and graded randomly.
Totally engaging and interesting. Easy grader on papers and gives fair tests. One of my favorite profs so far
One of the best professors I've had. He makes you want to go to lecture. He's interesting, funny, and real down to earth with the students. Great professor.

Most overrated prof at Pitt. The lectures were very one-sided and boring. Very helpful however if you ever run into any problems. The TA was awful, and trying to determine your grade in the class was impossible due to the way it was randomly curved.
He's a nice guy but his class sucks. The TA is a **** and his lectures are very one sided. Half the time the lecture is somewhat interesting and boring the other half.
Funny guy... I agree, the recitation instructor is useless..
Simply the best professor on campus!

I got alot from this class because i put alot in. If someone didnt learn anything it was because they didnt put in the necessary work.
Prof E. is very funny during his lectures, however, the material he covers is very confusing. Also you have no idea what you grade is throughout the semester. The tests have the most random quiestions on it. Finally, if Andita is the TA for class get out b/c she is of no help!
umm...yeah, he was ok..he was engaging, down to earth and interesting, but there was no way to know what was going to be on the exams because what we talked about in class was totally unrelated. TA (Mihnea Vasilescu) was horrible too.
I agree with everyone who has said he is a good guy but his class is confusing. The material is not that hard, but it is just you can't really know what kind of questions are going to be on the exam. Small assignments in the class aren't bad, and he does give you opportunities for bonus.
This guy is great!! Relaxed, funny, uses plenty of examples. Doesn't really worry about being politically correct, which adds to the class.
If you like sociology, don't take a class with Dr. E. This class is basically economics and environmental science. Also, the reading is boring and irrelevant to anything related to the field.
Funny, makes material easy to understand, lots of good examples. The class was not what I expected- a lot of the material was about the environment and economy (from a liberal/hippie perspective), but I found it interesting.
I loved this prof. Class was fun, interesting, and because of the small class size, we were allowed to pick whether we wanted essays, exams, or presentations. Society and the Child was definately a class I would recommend as an elective!
Went to class about two times and managed to get an A. When I did go to class, it was extremely boring, but the material is a bunch of common-sense stuff that anyone should know.
he tries to make the class very pleasant. In my opinion, he is a great lecturer
LOVE THIS GUY!
Professor Epitropoulos didn't give many assignments for Soc 10. Only readings and 2 papers. Most of the grade is from a midterm and final which are kind of tough but he curves your final grade generously. He tends to repeat examples in class which makes the lecture a little more boring then it should be. He's fairly laid back though.
Dr.E is a great guy. Material isn't very interesting but his anecdotes and personality liven up the class alot. Grades tougher on papers than I thought he would but is fair overall. Loves talking about Greece. If you see him at a bar he'll buy you a beer.
this course is more advanced than implied by the number, but Prof. Epitropoulos is an enthusiastic, bright teacher who leads intense discussions. If you dont like him your too far gone of a slacker!!!!!hahahaha also took marriage and peace movements with him, very impressed with methods and excellent lecture/discussion
gotta love dr.e. get ready to think for yourself and have hot debate.
Probably the best professor I've ever had in my college career. His teaching style is very unique, and very open for discussion, making lectures not dry at all, he adds in jokes and stories that make it incredibly entertaining. He can be a tough, but very fair grader. I highly highly recommend him to anyone who likes to do more in class than drool.
Great movies for the lecture.
you cant get better than Epitroplous. id go to lectures even if nothing he said was on the tests. Class is almost always interesting and good for some laughs. tests were really easy. go to lectures, do the readings, and with little effort, you'll get an A.
Interesting class especially pertaining to current events. His lectures can stray from the material you need for tests/papers but if you focus on the reading and core concepts he outlines in class it is not too hard to get an A.
Class should be re-named "Conservatives suck and here is my argument", at least for the second half of the course. If you can put up with his liberal bias, it is the easiest class I have taken here at Pitt.
I loved Prof. E so much that I'm taking another class with him in the Fall. I Definitely recommend him, but be prepared to actually read the books and study.
Dr. E's Societies class was ridiculously disorganized but nearly effortless. Random lecture material was sometimes insightful, and always amusing. Nice easy class to fill a requirement without too much work or an overly serious prof.
Dr. E always made class fun to attend. Stated things as he saw them. While the class was not of a great difficulty, I felt that I have learned a lot. Perfect class for filling a requirement.
WORST teacher I ever had! Extremely biased views. Unhelpful at office hours. Lied about final grading system. Notes were impossible to understand with crazy symbols. Lectures are extremely boring and have nothing to do with the material. Failed his class because he lied to us about grading format and refused to change even after confronted by peopl
He is a great professor and one of the few who keeps lectures interesting. He says he curves the class but i do not believe he does. I was sure i was going to get an A- and was stunned when i got a B+. He also avoided me when i asked to switch his final (i had 3 on 1 day). However, he still is a great professor and id suggest taking him
Hated his class. He seemed to ramble and didn't make clear lecture points. There were three books for the class, but we never even touched the last one. Two, non-cumulative tests and a term paper. He made interesting discussion points, but tested you on things he mentioned in class one time. I would not recommend him.
This guy is crazy. He's hilarious in class but really disorganized. Lots of athletes in this class? not sure why. Not a blowoff.
Dr. E's sociology classes are those college courses where you can just sit back and absorb funny, interesting, real-life relevant material rather than worrying about details for exams. Papers and tests were sparse and easy. Hold off on buying the textbooks for any of his classes unless you really need them. Overall, a great prof. and class!
GREAT CLASS!! He is a good prof but got sick at the end so his awesome TAs took over. Great experience and very interesting.
Lectures and recitations were very interesting but the exams were way too long/specific for the lack of depth from lecture. Overall just a frustrating class.
I was looking forward to this class, I went to every lecture and recitation, but still struggled on the midterm and final because they were extremely specific to the books and things mentioned in passing during the lecture. I loved the class, but not how it was tested. My TA and my final paper saved my grade in this class.
This class was very intersting, and Mike is hilarious, but I did find his tests insanely. If your looking for an intersting class I would recommend, but I would not recommend if you are looking to get an A. What keeps the class interesting is that it talks very much about current issued and pop culture.
Had him for societies. It started out really interesting and got incredibly boring at the end. At first he was funny, then he was just annoying. Class was supposed to be about different societies but he only talked about American society
had mike for societies - if you are looking for an A, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. i have taken some extremely hard classes at pitt, but have never taken exams that were as specific and detailed as these. you are expected to remember statistics and trivial information from some 200 pages of reading. unless you are fine with a poor grade DO NOT TAKE
By far my favorite professor so far. He isn't afraid to speak his mind. I got an A but I wouldn't call it an easy A, I think I got a couple lucky breaks. Definitely avoid getting Yven as your TA, he makes it way harder by giving a lot of busy work.
this dude is awesome. class comes across as easier than it really is. the required readings are optional if you just listen in lecture. keeps your attention. take anything he teaches
Makes lectures very interesting, though taking notes for lecture can be a bit nerve racking. That being said if you pay attention to class, rewrite your notes before the exam, and read the book at least one time (reread before the exam is preferable) you are sure to get an A+. Good professor.
Recitation is easy grade and you will need it. Guy is cool and funny but you talk about nothing in class. Then the test comes and its like Ph. D level random questions. Hope for some luck on tests, do good in recitation and you will be fine. I wouldnt mess with this guy again though. Hes more a stand up comedian than teacher
Dr E is a nice guy in some ways. But he did not teach a single thing this whole course. I tried to meet with him 5 times throughout the semester and he COMPLETELY ignored me. He gives 0 feedback on grades, just writing 'good' or 'better' on a paper. NOT accessible outside of class--except your his favorite.
Dr. E is the best. He is a little crazy in class when he writes notes on the board but he is fascinating to listen to. His tests are a bit specific but he will tell you what you need to know beforehand. I would definitely take a class of his again.
Dr. E is one of my favorite professors. He is very enthusiastic about what he teaches, and it conveys in his lectures. He is very entertaining and he says whatever he is thinking. His lecture is a bit unorganized but he will give you hints on what is definitely important. Attendance is not mandatory, but he also does not post his lectures online.
If you want an easy intro to soc, take Dr. E. However, I didn't learn much, and his swearing got a little out of hand at times. Very easy class though, but that's expected with intro classes.
The tests are EXTREMELY easy, to do well just study his class notes (as well as the little random statistics in his notes-basically just know all his notes, even the little details, like the back of your hand). He seems to know a lot and is a funny/interesting guy. Easy to get an A without too much effort. Loved the TAs Rob and Aisha, a great help!
He's a really funny and personable professor, and the class was pretty interesting. A lot of the material, if you used common sense, you could make sense of, so it was easy. The tests were always very straight forward. He also always stuck around after class to chat or clarify concepts, which I thought was really nice.
EXCELLENT prof. I've taken 5 classes with Dr. E. throughout the course of my time at Pitt, and loved them all. Super easy at intro level, but expect to be challenged if you take one of his upper level courses -- but WORTH THE CHALLENGE; facilitates great discussions in upper levels. Passionate about soc; very approachable; HIGHLY recommend
One of the easiest As at Pitt, interesting class, and a very funny teacher. Highly suggest.
I loved this class! Dr E. is a good teacher, I wish he didn't curse so much in class but hey haha that's how he connects with students. I think he was pretty clear, used good examples during his lectures and told you exactly what he wanted for assignments. I'd definitely recommend this class to anyone looking to go into the health sciences.
I enjoyed his class! Very funny and makes class interesting. This class is pretty easy, but for the exams, I thought some of the questions were poorly worded and misleading. I recommend taking intro to soc with Dr. E though!
Your grade is based off of a recitation grade and two exams; making it very hard to improve one's grade. Class got very boring and painful to attend after a while. The final exam felt impossible considering the fact that I studied five days straight which was frustrating. Only an okay professor, definitely would not take again.
I honestly hated this class. The material could have been interesting but he spends most of the lecture repeating the same phrases over and over. He also swears most of the lecture, which was quite annoying and distracting. Barely learned anything here, and the recitation was tons of work. Would definitely not recommend whatsoever. Horrible class.
Dr. E is hilarious and I enjoyed his lectures for the most part. I felt that a lot of the material wasn't sociology, moreso econ. If you're looking for an easy gen ed- avoid. You have to work for a good grade.
Dr. E is fantastic! He is so funny and swears a lot, but that made me like him even more. He gives a critical look into the current status of medical care and training. The units on medicalization and healthcare policy were super interesting and eye opening. Quiz questions sometimes subjective. A must for anyone going into the health field.
Super funny, really cares about the subject and makes lectures interesting and funny. Exams are difficult, you have to take notes every day to do well. Term paper is also extremely comprehensive; the class is more economy than sociology, for a gen-ed it was really hard but I learned a lot...I wish I would have taken something easier, though.
Really fun and interesting class; Dr E. is a great lecturer, although his notes can sometimes be disorganized. He provides good notes on the books through CourseWeb, which are really helpful for both exams. There is also a term paper. This course is definitely economics-heavy, which I personally enjoyed. Very passionate about the subject.
Dr. E is a really cool person and this class is very low stress. Lecture attendance isn't mandatoryhe posts all his notes online, and tests are straight from his section notes. This class consists of 3 exams (25% each, no cumulative final) and recitation (25%). I'd definitely recommend taking him if you're looking for an easy Gen Ed course.
I took him for Societies. Dr. E is funny and can sometimes be all over the place but generally has interesting lectures. I personally didn't read the books but attended all lectures and recitations and still did well. Posts the notes on courseweb and only gives 3 multiple choice exams and no final. Interesting topics and funny personal stories.
Wealth and Power is definitely Dr. E's toughest sociology class. It's more economics than sociology and his exams are difficult. Work hard to get your grade
Dr. E was one of my favorite professors. His class was interesting and he encourages participation. He is very approachable and wants his students to succeed. He also gives great advice.
Relaxed and easy going guy, tells you what to know for the tests. Sometimes funny. However, his lectures are mostly tangents and he spends 3/4 of the time weirdly justifying what he's saying as "devils advocate" when he isn't really even saying anything taboo- needs to stop that. Lectures are based on book so one or the other is needed for exam.
Dr. E is so disorganized that it makes his class difficult. You will never know what to study for his exams bc he doesnt have study guides and doesnt tell you in class. He is funny but a terrible professor. AVOID
Dr. E is a very interesting lecturer, so it's hard to drift off into space in his lectures. He tries his best to keep students engaged the whole time. This course had 5 quizzes spread over the whole semester instead of tests, which I liked, but if was often unclear what would be on the quizzes. Don't take this class if you're looking for an easy A.
Dr. E is a great person and always willing to provide any extra help.
I took Dr. E's class entitled Societies and it was fairly easy. There's no final and only three exams that are all multiple choice. The only think I didn't like about the class is that the exams get a little harder because the multiple choice questions become more vague. But overall an interesting and easy class.
If you go to his office hours to go over tests and explain why you chose an answer, then he may boost your test grade. You don't need to read the books, but they are interesting. Memorize his lecture notes, and you'll do fine on the tests. If you don't, then they're pretty hard.
A gen ed class that is easy to get a good grade in as long as you try just a little. Read the books and go to recitations and there isn't a reason why you shouldn't pass. Great professor and a good guy.
Very easy and fun class. Very fair grader and understands that student have a lot going on.
This is a pretty easy class. His lectures could be sort of scattered and had a lot of tangents, but most of what you needed was in the notes anyway. The tests were all multiple choice, and we had a short paper and a group presentation in recitation. His teaching style is very casual and down to earth.
A good class to take for premeds.. the material was pretty interesting and I liked the guest lectures. There was 4 "quizzes" one paper and one group presentation in recitation. He does subtly mention his views quite often like suggesting real medical conditions like restless leg and ADHD don't exist but i don't think he has ever looked it up.
Dr. E's lectures were some of the most interesting classes to sit in on. I took notes on his lectures and studied for a few hours before the test and did well. The topics we talked about were relevant and current which made the class even better. There's no final, which is great!
I love this guy. He makes the class enjoyable to go to and actually speaks so students can understand. Super smart. Sometimes goes off on tangents but they're worth listening to. Theres 5 pretty simple quizzes, a recitation activity, and no final. TAKE HIM!!!
Dr. E is an eccentric dude (but all soc profs are kind of weird). I wasted money on buying the textbooks but I really liked the topics that we covered. He has some good points and has changed my perspective on certain issues in society. Tests asked really specific information but if you have a good TA you should be fine. Recitation is required!!!
Graded on just three tests and a group project. Incredibly easy course material, but tests are made unnecessarily difficult and specific so that Dr. E can pretend like SOC 0005 isn't a joke - coming from somebody that actually attended, took notes, did the readings, and studied hard. Take someone else if you don't want your grade to depend on luck.
Dr. E is a nice dude but this is a mediocre gen-ed. Dr. E broke this course into 3 units, the prison/crime, college drinking, and tourism. Sometimes it is hard to tell what will be on the exam, he posts many things on CourseWeb and goes on tangents during lectures. But the exams were pretty easy if you attended lecture.
He is a nice guy and his lecture was interesting. He made some extra credits opportunities as well. Having said that, the grades were decided by three exams and they were all multtiple choice ones. I felt they were quite tough and you should review texttbooks, articles as well as textbooks.
Mr. E was a great and entertaining lecturer, and honestly sometimes put in minimal effort whether it was just showing videos during class-but pay attention! Anything he shows you or assigns for reading can be put on a test. The key to this class is really just to pay attention, take notes, and do the reading and you will be fine.
Lecture can seem repetitive at times because a lot of the information is stuff most people would already know. Recitation is required, but doesn't really impact your understanding of the material. Although it's a general societies class, he focuses on a topic each semester (i.e. mine was criminal justice) for the most part
If you're interested in the material, great, but if not, there's really no need to show up. He posts the notes containing all the info you need for the tests, and just reads through it and goes on random tangents during class. You do have to memorize all the info on his notes since some test questions get specific, but once you do, you'll be fine.
The class was entirely online due to COVID-19. There are 3 exams worth 30% each and recitation is 10%. The exams were essentially all open book and very easy. My TA was super chill. Its the easiest A at Pitt (if you take it online).
Dr. E doesn't assign too much homework (you can get by by just watching the lecture/documentaries,) but your grade honestly depends on your T.A.. Mine was kind of crappy and didn't give clear instructions on a paper worth 15%. Dr. E's lectures cover super interesting material and he presents it from an unbiased perspective.
His lectures are incoherent. The slides are usually weird word maps that are hard to read. Interrupts himself constantly so he can put words in our mouths: Im sure a lot of you want thought police. Im sure a lot of you will be offended by this You can survive by doing the readings. Quizzes are multiple choice.
Dr. E was a great professor who knew what he was talking about. Though lecture was not mandatory, it benefits going! But he did record many of the lectures. Tests were literally so easy and straight forward: open note and some questions were talked about during recitation!
Very knowledgeable guy & often passionate about what he teaches. He can go off on tangents, but that just makes him more engaging imo. Attendance isn't mandatory & he posts the lectures online. 3 tests, 30% of your grade each, and the last 10% is participation in your REC. The tests are exactly the notes. Can get by without getting the textbooks.
Dr Es class was one of the most frustrating classes Ive ever taken. Unclear lectures and notes, goes on random rants, says he promotes free thinking but discussions are clearly heavily biased. He provides his own notes of the textbook but when confronted over his notes not matching several correct answers on an exam he barely gave any points back
The questions on the test correlated with the recitation, if you go to lecture and recitation, you'll pass. Dr. E only grades you based on three exams and recitation attendance. Good choice if you want to take societies
Prof. Epitropoulos is the best. His lectures are engaging but not mandatory. His exam questions and answers are taken directly from the notes so it is really easy to prepare for his tests. Great professor who does everything in his power to help his students succeed.
Amazing professor that brings in SO much personal experience in the field. He is Greek and makes this class SO funny and so much fun to be in. AMAZING professor, take him!!
Dr. E was a fantastic lecturer. The tests were all very straightforward and fairly easy so long as you pay attention during lecture. Would highly recommend him
Dr. Epitropoulos seemed like a great professor, I wouldn't know for sure as I only went to the first lecture but he seemed to genuinely care about the material and the class. Graded by 3 exams and recitation participation so show up to recitation and say a few things for credit. Exams were online and very easy with ~90% averages. Ideal gen-ed prof.
I actually learned a lot in this class and the material was super interesting. He wasn't the most engaging professor (attendance was always really low) but he is a nice guy and the exams were easy
Dr. E is a great professor. He speaks his mind and tells the truth. He's passionate about what he teaches and he gives it to you straight. I would recommend anyone take his class or even his new class SLAV 1320.
Do not take this class if you are looking for an easy A elective. Calls it a quiz even though its 45 questions long, closed note and in person on paper.
He goes into long rants sometimes and just promotes himself, but once you get past that the class is really easy and entertaining at points. Four quizzes that are straight from the notes and also common sense and no final. Great elective choice.
Dr. E is very funny and understanding. Societies is a good easy A gen ed course. All recitation notes from him and his TA's are posted online so you can still get a good grade on exams without actually going to lecture. Though he does make lecture fun and interesting. Recitation attendance is mandatory. Good TA's. Graded off of 3 easy exams.
Class was really easy if you went to lectures and "read" the materials. Attendance is mandatory for REC and REC had its own assignments. Overall an easy A if you do the busy work, would definitely take again.
Really easy gen-ed choice. 90% of grade is from 3 fairly easy MC tests, and no final. Lectures are him reading the notes he posts online, so I stopped going halfway through. REC attendance is mandatory w/ a short weekly discussion post, which is the remaining 10% of your grade. If you keep up with the material, this class is a low-effort A.
Easy gen-ed, graded by 3 exams with no final. Weekly recitations are mandatory and attendance is counted. Don't need to go to lectures since he posts all the notes online. Easy A.
Dr. E is a very reasonable and likable professor. This class is an easy A. I will say, however, that I feel like he put a lot / too much responsibility on the TAs and that I overall learned more from my TA than from his lectures.
Medical Sociology is a very insightful class, & I highly recommend you take it with Dr. E! He is a really caring professor, grades fairly, & provides notes for each lecture. Attendance isn't mandatory, but the recitations & lectures lay out exactly what will be on the quizzes (4 throughout the semester). An easy A if you take good notes and read.
Dr. E. is a nice guy and his quizzes (more like exams) were fair and based on the notes mainly. My lecture was at 8 am so I skipped a few times, but I still did well in the class. Quizzes made up 80% of the grade and the other 20% came from recitation, which consisted of participation, small assignments, and one short essay.
I would say this is an easy A but I got a B for the sole reason being I skipped the recitations (which are completely useless to the course). Graded on 3 very easy exams and recitation attendance/participation which is bs for an intro course. Definitely recommend taking though, the lectures I did go to were entertaining.
Dr. E is a great professor and very entertaining. His wealth and power class is an amazing course with learning I've used for countless other classes. Grade consists of 5 quizzes, a final paper, and recitation attendance. He throws tricks in the quizzes. Participation and listening during lectures are important to get a good grade on the quizzes.
This class is pretty easy and low maintenance for a gen ed credit. However, the lectures are a verbatim reading of the lecture notes that students have access to. Going to lecture is not necessary but be sure to attend recitation. The class is based almost entirely on three tests that are fairly easy but sometimes too detailed oriented.
Dr E was very middle ground on everything and always gave every side of the story when looking at the economy. His lectures were good, and his quizzes come straight from the lecture notes and what he says, like literally word for word. The readings are not really relevant and a waste of time.
He is a good professor but his tests are hard. test 1 was easy but test 2 is difficult- study all of the details. Recitation is easy and helpful. he has slides but notes are difficult to read as they are word bubbles. No need to read the textbooks. Overall nice and caring person.
Not as easy of a class as I hoped. Only graded on 3 exams and recitation attendance with is nice cause there's no outside work, but also no way to boost your grade. Studied hard for the exams but did ok on them because so many questions focus on very specific details from the readings. Lecture is also really boring and all over the place.
Definitely take this class if you're looking for a no effort gen-ed. Lectures consist of him re-reading the notes that are accessible to students on canvas, so really no need to go to class. Recitation instructor gives you a study guide before each test with exactly what you need to know, so as long as you attend recitation it's an easy A.
Dr. E is a weird guy. His class is relatively easy and you could only go to the recitations and still have a good grade in the class. His lectures tended to veer off topic really often so there's almost no point in listening to him. His tests are really easy and the study guides are really accurate. Takes forever to grade his tests.
He is a very nice teacher. However, he rambles a lot during lecture. He doesn't give back grades for anything till the end of the term. Overall, not a bad guy just not my favorite lecturing style.
Dr. E was a very entertaining professor and I never found myself bored during lecture because he cared about his content and we had guest speakers. The quizzes were fairly easy and he curved them if no one got a100. My only downside for Dr. E was that we did not know our grades in the class until grades were posted at the end of the semester.
I honestly found this class and the topics interesting. Pretty easy gen ed too and the notes are always posted on canvas. Graded on 3 exams (multiple choice) and recitation attendance. Take this class!
v easy gen ed, five multiple choice quizzes, questions given in recitation
I loved Dr. E so much!!! He was genuinely hilarious and made lectures super fun. Graded off three multiple-choice exams that were pretty straightforward. Def take this as a soc gen ed.
Easy gen-ed with interesting topics. No need to attend lectures as notes are posted online, but recitation attendance is mandatory. 3 exams make up most of the grade. Helpful TAs and Unstuck AI made studying a breeze.
Dr. E is a good professor in the sense that he is available outside of class and very easy to speak to. However, his lectures aren't very engaging and tend to stray away from the textbook/class content. While his exams are MCQ only, there are many questions on them that addresses content that we didn't cover in class.
Very easy gen ed. The class is 3 segments all associated with a different book (you can get by without reading) that correspond to 3 exams each worth 30% of the grade, but they're all multiple choice, with almost all questions pulled directly from the notes. The last 10% of the grade is recitation, for which attendance is mandatory. No final.
Grades on 3 multiple choice tests based off 3 textbooks. I bought the first one and didnt use it and was fine not buying the other two. Overall it was easy and not much work outside of class/ no HW. His lectures were somewhat interesting but hard to pay attention to. Most questions on the test were straight from the notes.
Missed lots of classes, some without any notice. Ones he actually showed up to turned into wildly off-topic rants. Him “clarifying” something only confused the class even more, including the TA. He tries to make you the stupid one when you personally ask/email a valid question even though the answer can't be found anywhere else. Dr. E is a JOKE.
I really enjoyed his lectures and content but found a decent amount of content on exams that were not covered in class. My TA was not very helpful which made this class harder. I am a science person so this class was very outside my comfort zone. I enjoyed it but my grade was not ideal, even though I put a good amount of effort into this class.
Dr. E's lectures consist of scrolling through notes he posted on Canvas and going on tangents that are hard to keep up with. The tests had most questions coming from the notes, but also content we never went over in class. I definitely could have done better if I put in more effort, but it was also hard to stay engaged in his lectures.
Not the best professor, went off on so many random tangents during class. Exams are based on the notes posted on Canvas but some of the questions were on things we had never discussed before. Grade is based off 3 exams and recitation attendance.
very interesting person and he rambles a lot in his lectures which can be interesting, IF you care. entire grade is based off 5 MCQ exams (closed note), 5% recitation attendance, and 5% of a small and easy group project in recitation. the exams are HARD though even if you study - take a looot of notes in class and follow the study guide directly.
90% exams and 10% recitation grade. Exam questions were taken straight from the notes. Recitation TAs basically gave you 30 of the 50 questions in advance. I never even opened any of the textbooks and I got a 96 on every exam. easy gen ed.
Depends on what TA you get for the class. My TA gave us little to know heads up on exam questions while (based on the other responses) the other TA gave out questions. Lectures are so boring hejust reads of the notes on canvas. exams were easy if you knew the material. If I put in more effort and had the other TA I wouldve done better.
Dr. E gives some of the better lectures I've sat in on at pitt. He is clearly very passionate about the topics that he teaches. The course is graded on 5 multiple choice quizzes, a presentation in recitation, and recitation attendence. The content of the class itself is very interesting but by the end of the semester I would rarely go to lectures.
Dr. E is clearly passionate about sports, especially the current state of college sports, so it was interesting to have this class. However, the "sociology" part of sociology of sports was not present. There is no focus on the application of any theories or anything. But a super fun class to take if you're into sports. Discussions get very lively
OK professor, but goes on many tangents and it's fairly unclear what you'll actually be tested on; the first quiz of the semester (out of five) had 1/3 of the questions pulled from inequality statistics from a powerpoint slide shown on the first day of class. Second "quiz" was over 40 questions long! Nonsense rote memorization. Would not take again
Very low maintenance class but still interesting
Likely to go on tangents in lecture, notes can be confusing, however I enjoyed the lack of midterm/final and unit quizzes instead. Readings could be very complicated/dense so its best to just show up to lectures to understand what the key takeaways were instead of reading for the week.
Dr. E was a really chill prof! Exams were worth 30% of your grade each and recitations made up 10% which consisted of group presentations on articles and discussion posts. I honestly really enjoyed this class; it was very thought-provoking, but I wish it wasn't as test heavy.
Dr. E is the definition of nonchalant. He has cancelled class plenty of times and dismisses class early sometimes. His "lecture slides" look like they were made on a doodle app on an ipad. The class is not hard as recitation was helpful and also online studying tools. He honestly kind of just yaps. Also beware, he wears his sweatbands everyday.
