i'd do him
He eases the stress of a hard class by being funny.
He's funny. The pop quizzes are just on current events-no need to stress out-they only count as extra credit

Reporting is NOT an easy course by Foley is the BEST! He made the class so much better for me. This is one of the only classes that I actually went to every single lecture because I wanted to. You'd be lucky to have him as your TA as well.
Reporting is definitely a hard, very time-consuming class. Foley makes it so much more fun though with his crazy lectures and dancing around. I actually enjoyed going to lecture!

Hard class but funniest teacher ever. SUPER HARD
THIS CLASS IS HARD, but I learned a lot by having him as my professor. He is hilarious! Although this class is hard, If you need help, he will come to the rescue :o)
Apparently I'm in the minority, as I found this class to be not much harder than MMC2100. Foley is a complete nutcase, but that only enhances the lectures. A lot of the grade depends on your TA, though. :-/
I absolutely loved Prof. Foley's class. How often do you get an older teacher with gray hair, dark, black rimmed glasses AND AN EARRING! His humor is rolling on the floor funny and while most of the lectures are common sense, you'll want to go to class!
I heard it sucks to have him for lab, but I didn't so I don't know. He is SO funny and knows what he's talking about! However, the quizzes DO count for your grade, not extra credit!
Had him for lab. He is a GREAT teacher, but it is true, having him for lab is REALLY HARD. This class is like a full time job. You probably have close to no chance at an "A". If you are a journalism major, taking his lab will make you a better writer. If you don't care, don't take Foley for Lab.
the lecture is the best part of the class. as for the lab, good luck.
HILARIOUS...AND ALWAYS WILLING TO HELP.
Foley will kick your butt, but it's worth it. If you can get into his lab do it. You probably won't make an A, but you'll feel like it's the best damn B or C you ever get.
Very funny and extremely helpful. You'll learn a lot!
If Foley wasn't one of the funniest people ever, he would probably be the most hated instructors on campus. His Lab is SUPER hard, but like someone said before, you'll be better for it! I feel like I'm learning a lot more than the other Labs, even if I do end up with a C!!!
Awesome prof. Hilarious in class, kicks your butt in lab but you will learn a LOT. Don't ever take his comments personally - he really is trying to help you.

Holy crap, don't make a fact error (minus 50%)
I didn't have him for lab, so I only got lectures and exams from him. He made every single lecture interesting and he really made the class a great one. If it were only lab I would have failed miserably because I would have dreaded going to it. Great professor.
I had Foley for lab and he is one of the most interesting and caring teachers I've had at UF. I would highly recommend you take advantage of his class and his experience in journalism. He cares about his students and also tries to make a hard class interesting and fun. He's not bad to look at either!
Foley's tough, but he'll give you a real life perspective that's hard to get from other teachers. He's also a UF alumni.

Foley's lectures are a blast and the Reporting tests are pretty easy if you go to class (or just buy the notes). Your Lab TA really determines your grade in this class. But Foley is an incredible lecturer.
Not really an easy course as far as attention to detail, etc. But should journalism be easy? No, absolutely not. Accuracy and detail are paramount to effective journalism. Given the modern collapsing media power structure, student's should be challenged now more than ever. Mike Foley is an awesome person all around.
Foley is the most awesome professor at UF. He makes lectures fun and interesting, and really knows how to connect with his students. He is very entertaining, as he dances across the room and cracks jokes that made the entire class laugh until their sides hurt! >Sigh<...I wish more professors were this cool...and he's pretty cute too!;)
Probably the best professor I've had at UF. His lectures are a pleasant mixture of his wit and clear, concise and helpful skills. Lab on the other hand... let's just say you'll need to devote plenty of time to reporting.
Hard class, but Foley makes lectures really fun. He is hilarious. Tests are hard, but if you study you'll be okay. I would definitely buy the book. You don't need it but I went from a B to an A just by reading the book. Make sure you DONT get behind!
Foley is probably the best professor I've had at UF. He makes lectures entertaining and is really helpful. Try to get into his lab if you can!
Foley is funny and trys to relate to students. Lectures are interesting and he gives pop quizzes that count only for attendance. Study AP Style for exams and read course pack.
Professor Foley makes this class fun and lively. He tells corny jokes but they're cute. He will talk to you about anything and he really cares about his students. He's very experienced. The tests aren't that hard, just make sure you read the course back and STUDY AP STYLE LIKE IT IS YOUR LIFE. If you take the class, it will be. GO TO CLASS!
I went to his office hours everyday, sometimes two times a day. Over the past week, I left, talked down the hall and started sobbing. He has A LOT of experience which obviously helps ... Since he's the only one who teaches the course, I'd take him. He's always willing to help. Before you take this class, keep in mind it's truly DEMANDING.
Foley's lectures were great. Although i had to take reporting twice (the lab killed me), I enjoyed the lecture both times
Reporting sucks, but journalism and PR majors have to take it. Luckily, Foley is absolutely awesome. He is funny, nice and really helpful. Who cares about grades, honestly? I learned more from this class than any other college class. The reputation precedes it, but this class honestly is not that bad.
I switched from PR to Journalism as a major because of this class.
Awesome teacher. It's not his fault he teaches such a crappy/hard class. But he keeps it managable. Do good in the lecture because that is what keeps your grade above water. You'll hate lab but go to lecture it's helpful and easy bonus points.
I was an international student at UF studying journalism, and I had to take Foley's class. I did it, and I earned an A in his another class, Investigative Reporting. Seriously, if I could make it, you should, too. My English was limited when I came to UF, however, it improved. Just take it seriously, work hard, go see him if you have troubles...
...but think about your problem before you see him. Don't go to his office to ask him where to put a comma. You can find these kind of answers elsewhere. Think well about your problem/dilemma, before you ask him for a help. Look smart, be smart, show him that you care and that you work hard. He was the best professor I ever had.
I honestly don't understand why so many people complain about this class. If you're a good writer, you'll be fine. If not, well, you probably shouldn't be in this college anyway. If you get a lab instructor who goes easy on gradings, you'll be even better. Lecture tests are an easy "A" and lecture quizzes are attendance based. Great class.
Great professor. Terrible class. Foley is hilarious and will talk to you about anything. The class is a lot of work, but if you talk to your lab mates and get a good lab instructor you'll be fine. BE WARE OF FACT ERRORS!
Foley will own your soul when you take him. I took his lab to go along with his lecture, and I didn't have a life. But by the end, you'll look back at all of your F's and D's and you'll see how much better you are for it. Don't expect to pass until the forth or fifth week.
It's really not that bad. Foley is extremely helpful and understanding. And hilarious. If you go to him during office hours you WILL do better. Attendance quizzes and exams are super easy. Style quizzes can make or break you - peruse the Stylebook before lab and LEARN FROM YOUR MISTAKES and you'll do well :)
Veteran of the Journalism department. Approachable if you need help with something. Reporting is hard, but don't hesitate to ask for help if you need it.
While you're actually in the class, it's as bad as everyone says it is. You'll fail your first assignment. You'll question your major. You won't have a social life. But once you've finished, you'll see how much you improved as a writer, and you'll know it was all worth it.
I'm not crazy about his classroom antics. Be serious sometimes! Don't do jumping jacks on stage. All the dropouts leave before class evals, so scores look high.
Foley's class is designed to be a weed out class. You will learn a lot, but at a blow to your GPA. He creates situations where you are most likely to get an F on as assignment to teach you a lesson. He is helpful and your writing will improve but your grades will suffer for the first 5 weeks. This is the hardest class at UF after Org Chem $ Fin Act
Loved his lectures! I only missed about four the entire semester. He gives 12 random quizzes, so make sure to you go. Its basically a free 100. He drops two, so if you miss one don't fret. He's funny, entertaining and knows how difficult reporting is and tries to lighten up the lectures. Hard, but worth it.
This class definitely isn't easy, but Professor Foley's teaching makes it rewarding in the end Even the students who make an A (there are very few) will still get papers back with very low scores. By the end of the class you are expected to have learned from earlier mistakes to improve your grade. Attending lectures helps your lab grade immensely.
He definitely knows his stuff, but he comes off as very arrogant. Not as approachable as some people make it seem. You'll learn a lot, but sacrifice your confidence in the process.
Awesome!! Tough class, but so worth the running around trying to interview people for. If you don't understand grammar and AP Style by the end of this class...well you have problems. Amazing teacher!
The class is difficult but once you get the grasp of simple grammar and AP style rules this class becomes easier. He is always in his office willing to help. Only wants the best from his students. If you take this class serious your writing will improve. Lively lectures which made the difficult class more enjoyable. I will never forget Mike Foley
This class is a challenge but if you're a hard worker, a tough reporter and a determined student, then you'll be okay. It just takes a lot of dedication and putting yourself out there for finding stories and interviewing strangers. Go to class. He gives really great tips on how to improve your stories and enjoy writing.
Be prepared to really work hard - harder than you've ever worked before. As far as interviewing goes: plan ahead, don't be shy, ask a TON of questions and pretend like you know what your doing. Best advice I ever got from Foley: You should obtain enough information that you only use 10% of what you find out.
Go to lecture. Foley makes it fun and you get freebie attendance grades. We all know this class is demanding, so be sure to get a good lab instructor. You'll be okay.
I had Foley for Reporting and was in his lab. It was more a far more challenging class than other lab TAs but the absolute best decision of my college career. I am a much better writer for having had his class and even took his Advanced Reporting Capstone. Highly recommend both- you won't regret it! And he is super cool in office hours so stop by
Professor Foley is one of the most phenomenal professors I've ever had. The class is challenging, but if you come to him showing that you genuinely care about the work, he will help you become a better writer than you ever thought possible. He's also really hot, which made things nice a lot of the time.
Foley is amazing. Best professor I've ever taken at the University of Florida only because he's so great. Extremely helpful and will always make time for you.
Great professor. Great class. Consider it a part-time job. You have to work for your grade.
Don't skip class. The tests are 90 percent AP stylebook. The stylebook will be like your bible. Just get the job done. No one cares. It's all in your mind. Just know what you want to know and ask around. People like to talk about themselves most times. Talk to many people. Don't give up. Plan. Always have a plan B. Don't procrastinate!
Professor Foley has been one of my favorite professors in my time at UF. The only downside is his lab. If you want to learn a lot, you're in luck. For his classroom discussions, he is very enthusiastic and open about how he feels about certain subjects, but makes the class super enjoyable. Three tests, all pretty easy if you attend class.
Professor Foley is the best professor I have ever had! He is a real gem! He is not there to make you fail but learn the right way. His sense of humor is amazing, and it really makes the class worthwhile. I have done more laughing and learning in 12 weeks than I have in my entire life. Forget the rest Mike Foley is the best! I will miss him dearly!
Foley knows his stuff, but doesn't communicate it well to his class. He tries too hard to connect with the young people, and he can't keep his politics out of the lecture. I find this ironic considering he talks about ethics. He's fine as far as professors go, but way too political.
Mike Foley is one hell of a professor. I had him as both my lecturer and lab instructor, and it was all grammar hell. The course itself is not terribly difficult, but the small mistakes definitely add up. Lectures were enjoyable, and he was always available outside of class to provide individual help on past and future assignments.
Everyone loves this guy. I wasn't one of those people. HIs age is certainly getting to him. He mis speaks a lot which makes assignments confusing. No clear grading, he keeps all grades in a folder and makes you calculate it w/ an insane formula at the end of the semester. Tests are easy, but he's the hardest grader I've ever had on outside stories
His lab thoroughly kicked my butt, and I'm a straight A student. I've never wished for a C and the semester to end more in my life. However, taking his section, I learned more than I would in others. OFFICE HOURS SAVE YOUR LIFE. He helps you out if you go to them. His lectures are hilarious. Just be ready to work extremely hard every week with him.
Mike Foley is a legend at the UF J-School. He has some pretty cool credentials and has mentored some famous journalists. I had him for lecture. You'll learn more about AP style in multimedia writing and reporting lab, but I enjoyed his jokes and stories about the journalism field. Exams are easy. Events quizzes are graded on completion.
Mike Foley is one of the most difficult professors I've ever had at UF. For the first few weeks of class I had mental breakdowns fearing I wouldn't pass. BUT, he is my favorite professor I've had this far. I passed because I went to his office hours! He will really help you if you attend office hours and show that you care!!!
Foley is known for being a hard grader and I had him for lab too. My first paper (he gave an optional story option to replace our lowest score) was the worst grade Ive ever received throughout all of my education. By my second paper, I improved by 40+ points. You catch on very quickly to what he expects. If you need to learn AP style, take his lab.
The man quite literally didn't respond to any of my emails over the final month. I never received grades for my last two stories, so I have no idea if my B grade is accurate. Besides that, he's a very subjective grader. You could get a poor grade on a paper with no marks on it and have no idea what you did wrong. He just decided he didn't like it.
If you're someone who has anxiety or depression get some good SSRIs and a strong support system before you take this class. Tried taking this class twice with different lab instructors and couldn't handle the learn by failing set up. Foley seems like a nice guy but taking this class literally led to a suicide attempt and dropping out of UF
Lots of AP grammar lectures (range from 5 to 30 min each) but that's all with this class. You learn AP to go to your lab. 3 exams only but they are all just AP style multiple choice and you have to read 2 articles before each but I never read the actual thing but the quizlet ones and did great. Proctored, 100% recommend him he knows what hes doing
I love Mike. He is hilarious and knows what he is talking about when it comes to reporting. Since he wasn't my lab instructor, I had him read a few of my stories over before I turned them in. He gives great feedback. This course is not as scary as people make it sound.
I definitely recommend taking the lab with professor Foley, who is an expert in his field. He is credible and passionate about journalism, makes lecture engaging and will definitely meet you in the middle if you are struggling (always willing to give an extension or feedback). Not a scary class, depending on ur approach and willingness to try.
Foley is the best! Very charismatic and wise. He gives "pop quizzes" but then gives you the answers before you have to turn it in. 10/10 would take any class of his.
Mike Foley will probably be the nicest and most difficult professor I have ever had. This man will kick your butt. Most difficult course I have ever taken and a very difficult lab that kept me up all night couple times. Foley is a great guy and beloved by all his students.
Fantastic professor with amazing feedback. He's hilarious, engaging and caring. He will make sure you know AP style very well and is a tough grader, but it's worth taking your lab with him. He's a big reason I've done very well in the J-school
THIS GUY ROCKS! Absolute savage. One of the hardest classes I've ever taken, but I learned the most, too. You'll be writing papers every week, at home and in class. He will grade them as if they are being submitted to the New York Times. It's tough, but if you put in the effort you will pass the class. Foley your an absolute G. I bet you're mad now
Be ready to write and to cry. He is the toughest professor I hope I ever take and his grading is very tough AND inconsistent. My biggest tip is to write "boring" work - don't try to be extra so much so you lose what he's looking for. The piece I loved and did the most work for was my worst grade in class but was also published in The Alligator (EC)
Super funny and really caring. He did go through the slides a little too fast, though.
He is honestly super chill & loves to crack jokes. I only had him for the lecture hall, not for lab. 3 tests based on the lecture notes & a 4th test grade is put in based off ur attendance. Only wouldn't take him again bc he is a tough grader. Cool dude tho. He went way to fast thru the lecture slides, so that was a little annoying lol.
I adore Professor Foley. He really cares about helping his students succeed. Hard work is essential because he will make you work for your grade. Attend office hours whenever you can because he explains what you're doing wrong and what you can do to improve. Take him for lab because it helps you learn AP style and how to write a good story.
He's great! Don't let reporting scare you, if you care and work hard you'll get the grade you want.
ignore what these other people say, foley is the worst. DO NOT TAKE HIM AS YOUR TA there are way easier options. he is too old to be teaching this course and has lost his reporting touch.
The professor lectures, and they are important to attend. He gives random attendance quizzes that will be used for the final. The info from lecture slides is essential and directly related to the exams. Ask the TAs what they think you should write about to score higher. Expect nothing to be good enough, but you'll improve a ton!
Lectures are alright. I can't really tell if I learn much from them aside from the AP style content. His lab has 10 style quizzes (5 get dropped) and an outside story due every other week. He dropped our story grades from before spring break too. In lab, you start by writing parts of stories, and later on you move on to writing inside stories.
I only took his lecture, not his lab, but I've heard he's a harsh grader because he wants you to be ready to be a real journalist. Funny old man who is very knowledgeable. Take pictures of every slide if you're not a fast typer, he goes through them too quickly sometimes. Exams are easy if you take good notes and review them. Take Jim Ross for lab!
Foley is an insanely hard TA, but don't be discouraged by reviews or rumors. He is super tough on grading assignments and outside stories, I didn't receive an A all semester. But the 'pop quizzes' in lecture are just for attendance, and half-way through the semester he drops all your grades. ASK HIM FOR HELP, he will tell you what he wants to see.
Professor Foley has a reputation as being scary but he's really funny & a great professor. I didn't have him as my TA, so I couldn't tell you how difficult his grading was on stories. His lectures were boring though if you know anything about grammar already. The course (excluding the lab periods) is graded based on 3 exams & attendance quizzes.
Foley is a tough but knowledgeable professor. Expect a challenging course, but engaging with his feedback can really help you improve. Unstuck study and reviewing lecture slides were essential for doing well on exams. Overall, a rewarding class if you're willing to put in the work.
He's hilarious and great fun as a lecturer but run the other way if you need him for lab. Unclear and excessively harsh grading criteria, if he shares any at all. He marks you down for sport and by the end of it you feel less like you've learned something and more likely you've been torn to shreds.
My experience is this class was not easy at all to say the least, but he was a tough grader who massively improved my capacity to write as journalist. Getting an A in this course is tough, but if you take your studies seriously, you will pass.
I had him for lecture. However, I am begging everyone to have Dr. Bauer as their TA. She is easier than all of the other ones and cares about your mental health. Make sure to show up to as many lectures as you can because Foley gives pop quizzes.
I had Foley for lecture and lab, and I loved him. Journalism majors should def take his lab. It's impossible to get an A in, but you learn so much and get really good at AP style. PR majors must avoid his lab if they don't care about writing. Exams are easy just take notes in lecture and do the minimal + interesting reading. He's the best.
The problematic aspect of this class is the lab. Have your stories lined up in advance. Don't wait for potential sources to follow up — find new ones or pivot to a different story because the days go by fast. And make preparations for your next story immediately after submitting the last. Also, read the AP style guide at least once a week.
foley is an awesome dude and the lectures/exams are easy. i had him for lab and it was exceedingly difficult, but i do feel like i learned a lot. if you're not a journalism major, DO NOT TAKE HIS LAB. but if you are, i think it's worth a slight GPA hit to get instructed by someone as knowledgeable as he is.
