Lectures were interesting and the tests aren't difficult if you study enough.
very helpful, very understanding, and he gives you exactly what is going to be on the test on a review sheet, so all you have to do is study!

he's a good teacher as he is very interested in the subject he teaches; however, i found the tests to be somewhat difficult. you have to use a blue book and it's kind of hard to know exactly what he wants. the kind of class you get a "b" in.
Ok, he's a fair teacher and he makes the subject so interesting. He gives you a review sheet of what he's going to be on the test. BUT, his tests are next to impossible. You can't figure out what answer he wants for, so you have to memorize EVERYTHINg!
Mr Gilbert is a great teacher, with a vast knowledge of what he teaches. Very helpful! He covers a lot of information in class - check history.com if you are missing any info on study guide. DO NOT BUY THIS COURSE BOOK!!! He does not teach out of it.
his test are hard if you dont study but if you do you'll be fine...one of the most interesting teachers
Classes were a little on the boring side from a science major's point of view. The tests aren't difficult if you study the study guide he gives you.
Mr. Gilbert is an awesome teacher who demands that you learn his material. He has great stories and an intense knowledge of his subject matter. Gilbert's class makes you want to go out and change the face of politics.
Great Instructor. His is challenging. He does not suprise you. Very cool to talk to after class. I suggest to anyone who has not taken his class to listen to what he says. He speaks nothing but the truth!!
He is very interesting to listen to and his test are straight forward. But if you get mad listening to liberal propaganda then his class in not for you. He doesn't seperate facts from his liberal garbage that he spouts.
Good instructor. He knows his stuff.
Great teacher!! Lectures are very interesting. Tests are hard, but not so bad if you really study and learn the material. I highly recommend taking his class if you are interested in learning and not just making an easy "A".
VERY interesting class! A great teacher with insightful discussions. However...tests are very very difficult. It is nearly impossible to make an A in this class.
ugh didn't like his class at all. he knew his material, but was also conceited about knowing the material. i don't like when teachers are arrogant about knowing the material, and then are cocky about it when questions are asked.
MUST TAKE NOTES!! Whatever you do, don't miss a class.. you will fall behind!!
I thought this guy was awesome.......he even saved m ass a couple ties, grade-wise. Highly recommended. Full of knowledge, and very friendly and helpful.
Mr. Gilbert is literally the best teacher i've ever had in my entire life. I can't say that i've ever met anyone smarter than him. His class is extremely challenging, but it's worth every minute of it. He opened my eyes to so many things, and I feel like a better person for having taken his class. Make sure you go to every class and take detailed notes. Make sure you do the review sheets and get specific and thorough answers. His tests are all essay questions, and he grades very very hard.
THE BEST!!! He is smart and you will learn alot! One of my favorite teachers ever!

A great instructor with alot of insight into the world and the suitations in it. Some would say he is an avid liberal and uses his position to voice his own politcal agenda. However it is his right to do and say as he wants, most of the politcal points he makes are exactly correct. Mike Gilbert is a great teacher and has been great mentor to me.
Professor is very liberal...and even comes across as anti-Christian at times. States theory as fact. Has a good knowledge of Govt but comes across as cocky. (know it all) His tests are extreemly hard. It's all from your memory. No multiple choice at all. You have to study for 4-5 hours for each exam. HARD CLASS.
Very nice guy and extremely knowledgeable about the subject matter. But, beware -- you must take exhaustive notes from his lectures, because you will not be using the textbook. He tests in 'blue books' and you must recall from memory everything he is asking for. Not easy to get an A -- never, never miss a class; you will not be able to catch up.
class is very straight forward. 4 short answer/essay tests. thats all. must take a rediculous amount of notes. Very liberal, but informative. DO NOT BUY TEXT BOOK. we did not neb open it once! you must memorize everything. tape recorders are encouraged. Passed with a C
Your grade comes solely from 4 difficult tests which he grades extremely harshly. I went into all the tests feeling very confident, only to end up getting a B or C because apparently you have to regurgitate absolutely every detail word for word as he said it. There are no handouts and no assignments, just lectures and he only says things once.
Mr. Gilbert is a VERY smart guy. His classes are all lectures, there's no homework and no quizzes. I think the thing I DON'T like about his classes are that there are 4 tests and he grades them HARSHLY. Seriously if you can't give every detail and example then he'll count off points. You have to study for like 5 hours to get a good grade.
Professor Gilbert is a very smart man. He gives only 4 tests, which if you need help understanding something he is always willing to help. If you study for his test then they are fairly easy. He is a really good teacher
Incredibly smart, Mr. Gilbert knows what he is talking about. His testing proceedures are difficult (total memory recall: indtify/short answer/essay for all tests in dreaded 'blue books'). I learned so much from him though. If you know (and memorize) the stuff on his review sheet, you'll do fine in his class. I left with an A.
MR.GILBERT IS A GREAT TEACHER, I HAVE TAKEN ALL OF HIS CLASSES HE HAS TO OFFER. HIS CLASSES ARE ALL THE SAME BASICALLY. HE GIVES YOU A SHEET WITH ALL THE DEFFINITIONS HE WANTS YOU TO KNOW AND 4 DIFFERENT PARTS OF THE LECTURED HE COVERED WHICH HE WILL GIVE YOU. SO IF YOU STUDY GOOD ENOUGH, YOU WILL MAKE GOOD GRADES. YOU'LL ENJOY THE LECTURES.
Great teacher
He is a very good teacher gives intersting lectures. If you need help he is willing to help.
He is a good teacher that clearly states hie requirements of you. His class is not easy, unless you have a great memory. For his tests in the government test you will be required to regurgitate about 5- 10 pages of facts mixed in with his opinions. Remember in this clas his opinion is what matters the most. Things must be said the way he wants them
I have taken Mr. Gilbert twice, this semester being my second time. I have taken him for Government and am now taking him for AMH2020. He is an awesome teacher. You go in each day and take notes. Attendance is necessary. In both classes, there have only been four tests so you really have to study. You MUST regurgitate everything back on the tests.
He knows his stuff but he grades incredibly harsh.
Seems like a boring class, but you are constantly taking notes and listening so i dont think it's boring. I loved this style of class, you know exactly what to study because he gives you a study guide. Really nice guy, but you must go to class! I learned a lot :)
he's a very intelligent guy. he knows what he teaches. his tests are not hard as long as write notes and memorize them exactly. the study sheet is a must.
He is a good teacher. He is a fair and nice teacher, just make sure you take good notes. You have to earn your grade in this class!
Rambles. Talks for full class period. Wants an insane amount of detail on tests. Wasn't aware teaching was about teaching for a test and not to actually learn. HORRIBLE teacher. I have no idea why he has so many good ratings. No one in my class liked him. This class was the worst I've taken in college so far.
I don't like him very much. all he does is talk and talk and talk. it's hard to keep up and take notes and still comprehend what he's saying. i even took a recorder but i realized that there's no way i'll listen to that boring 1hr and 15min lecture twice!I don't recommend him..i don't know what people rated him so good.
I really think Mr. Gilbert is a great teacher. I found his lectures very interesting. I never really lost interest in them. You will have to study a lot but in the long run you will benefit from all the interesting things you learned.
Friendly guy - always very approachable for help. Test material is covered on reviews, & I learned a ton. BUT lectures are inescapably boring, and the tests are incredibly hard blue book exams. I studied my butt off for a B - and I love the subject. Overall - not bad enough to drop it, but I wouldn't choose to take his classes again.
Don't buy the book. Every class is a full session of note taking. Mr. Gilbert taught me more about U.S. history than I thought I could ever learn. Don't miss class as you will fall behind. Lots of studying and detailed memorization from your notes in order to pass the tests too. I loved the challenge though and Mr. Gilbert too! Ooh Rah!
He's a nice guy, you learn a lot. He's always approachable and helpful. Attendance isn't mandatory, but you'll definitely fail tests if you miss more than one or two classes. They are VERY hard tests, he wants tons of detail and it's all blue book. The class is all lecture, definitely a lot of note-taking.
Wants very specific details for every test. You need to study a lot. This class was harder for me because I had no interest in it and only took it because I had to for dual enrollment, so I'm sure it's easier for people who want to learn the material.
Great teacher, knows his stuff. But comes off as an extreme liberal, so if you can get past that-your good. I'm a pre-law student, so I took this class as an elective...it was very easy. But try to avoid taking him early in the morning if possible-a 10 o clock class would be a decent time because attendance was MANDATORY
if you dont plan on doing alot of studying then dont take this class. he wants every detail for his essay questions. essays are good percentage of test. has defining keyterms on his tests and matching but you dont get a choice on the terms and all the matching have similar meanings. very hard. he is always willing to help. i reccomend Broxton.
i dislike history, but i loved his class! he knows everything, every minute detail, which makes it very interesting. i took the 6 week summer term along with his gov't class, a lot of the information overlapped, which was a huge help... but it is a lot of work. gilbert is always willing to help though, esp. if you miss a lecture! highly recommend!
"B.S. only gets you so far." "Details, details, details!" I absolutely loved this class... I was expecting to hate it from what others told me, because I needed the credit for high school. However, he is an awesome professor and has infinite stories to relate to what you're learning. He grades the first test the least which really helps! Take him!
He definitely is a great teacher, he keeps the lectures very interesting and relates a lot of cool tidbits. He takes his test from the lectures so take lots of notes. His lectures are a lot more detailed than what the book gives you. I didn't use the book once, I just went by my notes. He's a great professor. The only draw back is there's a lot
Test take getting used to, but overall he is a very helpful guy. Going to visit him during his office hours and a definite plus. If i had not been for me going there I wouldn't have passed.
Good exposition of legal cases, but the farther back in history you go, the more inaccurate he gets. If he can't get the past right, why should we listen to his opinions about the present or predicitons about the future?
Mr. Gilbert keeps pointing out that "we're all only human." If "to err is human", Mr. Gilbert must be very human indeed. He now appears either to have deliberately lied or to have misspoken when he claimed that Willie Horton's furlough was a federal program. Perhaps this class should be more accurately labeled the "Spin Zone".
IF YOU DON'T LIKE TO STUDY DON'T TAKE HIS COURSE. He is a very intelligent man and can recite hours of notes with little if any help. He knows what he is talking about. You have to regurgitate every freakin' note he gives you back on the test. Requires several hours of studying. If you are lazy or have poor studying habits, this class is for you.
Mr. Gilbert is not an easy teacher...you have to attend class each time and take really good notes. He does not use the textbook and the tests are brutal and based solely on his lecture. He is a fair grader and as long as you do your part in the class, you can succeed but he will not give it to you.
The way his class works is you come in, sit down, he starts talking, you copy down everything he says, and then you must memorize all of it word for word. He loves details! Don't leave anything unsaid! If you have a poor memory or are unable to express things in exteremly specific detail you need to be in a different class.
While some of the politicians he criticizes had a positive impact on the future of their country, this teacher is having a negative impact--or would if anyone could stay awake through his class.
mr. gilbert is not a bad teacher just really boring. i took american government from him and he taught us little about government. it was kind of just like american history. pay attention and go to class. try to stay awake.
if you aren't a good note-taker, i wouldn't recommend this class. each class is a lecture, but i thought it was pretty entertaining. he's a nice guy, and the tests aren't that bad, seeing as HE GIVES YOU A STUDY SHEET. i mean, c'mon. this isn't high school. no need to buy the book; he never uses it. just pay attention and take notes!
Like everyone else said his test require you to regurgitate every little detail he mentioned in class. Write down everything he says!! I took this because I had to for dual enrollment, If you're dual I recommend taking this course through FLVS instead. This class is straight lecture & very difficult if you're not used to that environment.
Not too ethical, really interjects his political point of view with students. Seems like an angry man with an agenda that he chooses to deliver through a captive group of college students.
This class is pretty difficult if you're not there for lectures which is all the class is. Take thorough notes and use the study guide to do well. Gilbert is a little hard to understand sometimes but he knows his stuff and is really knowledgeable. People who say the tests are hard don't study. Its a challenging class but its not impossible.
he is okay if you can take good in class notes
Not for the student who can't take good notes, or who can't learn from oral lectures. Tests are also nearly all written. Teaches in an objective manner without bias. 16 out of 31 failed the first test; so get help from either a good student or Gilbert who is very helpful during office hours..
if there is any way possible around taking this teacher.. i suggest you do so! your grade is based on THREE test.. thats it. He gives you lectures for weeks, and half the notes aren't even on the test. HORRIBLE TEACHER!!!!
This class was awful. He talks from start to stop, never lets out more than 5 mins early, talks the entire class with no powerpoint or any guide. Tests are VERY specific all writing no MC. WOULD NOT RECCOMMEND! I am a straight A student who struggled to keep a C. Only passed because i had a previous students tests. DONT TAKE HIM.
He is just hard to understand
The class is extremely hard. The text book is NEVER used and completely useless because on the tests he wants HIS definition. I do not recommend this class at all unless you are an extremely talented note taker.
Very good teacher! Going to his class is like go to storytime he is so interesting and well learned. He wants his definitions and never uses the book so don't bother buying it. Be warned! This class is not for someone who can take good notes. You will suck it up and your GPA will suffer if you miss class or have a habit of falling asleep.
he has two good things: gives out study sheets and helpful outside of class time. writing down everything he says is crazy plus he does ramble about non-important things so ignore that! he was not too bad, just have to know what to write down and STUDY LIKE IT IS YOUR LIFE! :)
VERY difficult class/teacher. talks entire time, expects you to memorize pages and pages of notes. rambles on about stuff irrelevant to tests. VERY strict grading on tests... i only took him b/c i had to get the credit. got A's in all my classes except his...
I took him for American Gov't. He counts off on the (all blue book) tests for ridiculous things (saying Democracy is "the rule of the many" instead of "the rule of the many for the many" cost me 4 points.) He rambles, is very biased and wants you to repeat his opinions as fact. I'm now a 4.0 Political Science major at UWF, and I barely pulled a B+.
He was extremely hard to follow and i do not recommend him especially during the summer terms. He tends to mix humanities with history during his lectures which makes it hard to know what is important to take note of. I ended up with a notebook full of worthless material.
People need to grow up, he isnt a horrible teacher. You're in COLLEGE now, so he treats you like an adult. If you listen to his lectures and understand what he means, along with the STUDY GUIDE he gives you. You will do fine. This isnt a class for people who are always trying to find the easy way out. Do the work.
I personally liked Mr. Gilbert as a teacher. I've taken him for Euro History from 1700. The main thing in his tests is that he likes detail, so just keep on writing until the bluebook is full. To study for his tests, just go onto Wikipedia and read the first paragraph or so to find facts (just make sure it doesn't contradict your notes.)
I took Mr. Gilbert for my American National Government night class. I am a history major and I did think his course was tough. Mostly because I've never had a teacher that was so meticulous. I did enjoy his class, and its nice to have a teacher that knows the subject through and through to just talk the whole class period.
He's very good teacher but he doesnt make it easy on you, kinda forces you to learn the stuff rather than just memorizing stuff. When he gives definitions write exactly what he says; on test he wants the exact definitons he gives you. I wanna say dont even buy the book but its good to wait til the 1st class to know for sure. you write everything
Mr.Gilbert knows his stuff, but expects his students to know too. Tests are WORD FOR WORD what he says in class so take notes! He likes length in essays, however, DoNot guess. (He'll take off points) The Final exam is probably the hardest to pass, so be sure to grade good on tests early in the semester. Study the study guide!
Basically you must memorize most material in a matter of days
Mr. Gilbert is probably the hardest teacher I have ever had. He is a great teacher and gives you absolutely everything you need to pass his class, but it's hard to stay attentive when you're falling asleep to the sound of his voice. Stay awake during his class and take absolutely spot on notes and you can get a good grade. I wish you all good luck!
He's very educated on his subject, but his lectures tend to be boring. He's got a witty sense of humor and lots of jokes that help keep ya awake. Won't need the book, and he takes role everyday. A recorder would be a good idea to catch details!
Mr. Gilbert is a really great teacher who knows his stuff. Can't believe people are complaining about note-taking,(what, do you sleep through other classes?) this is COLLEGE. Not an "easy A" class. Study for the tests and they aren't difficult. I definitely recommend him if you actually want to, you know...LEARN SOMETHING. Passed with an A.
I did not like him! he did not use the text book at all. He talks really low so it is hard to hear him. I hate testing because of the blue book way. He gives us terms we study then he will choose 20 out of 40 he gives and you choose 10 and same on the other sections.
Gilbert knows his stuff his is always willing to repeat something or clarify his points. He teches more on a University level and therefore students at a State College coomplain. I barely studied for his test a nd made A's all the way through. Highly Recommend
Mr. Gilbert is an amazing teacher. His class is really difficult but you will learn so much! He doesn't use the text book so note taking is a must. He's not a stickler for attendance, but trust me, if you miss a day you're behind. He isn't that great with email communication, but he is always open to talk during his office hours.
Mr. Gilbert has a script of the entire history of the world memorized, from which he pulls his lecture and his tests. Very dry humor. Note-taking is vital: if you don't study, you will probably not do well. STUDY--there are loads of terms, etc. Very difficult, but not impossible, and a very good teacher.
Attendance is mandatory to get good notes. He has impossible tests. I've never been happy about getting a B in a class before because I usually get A's, but I literally screamed for joy when I saw I got a B. He is a very hard grader with a dry sense of humor. He will talk with you after class though and clarify.
Mr. Gilbert is way too hard for anyone just entering college. The tests are strictly based off the notes and he goes through the notes faster than you can write. He will help you after class, but he isn't very approachable. Just don't put your pencil down all semester and you might make a decent grade
He is nice but very hard. You can't write fast enough to keep up. Test are based on notes and study guides are more like writing a book. Hard to hear him since he talks in such a low voice. But he is a really nice guy. Just thinks that everyone already should know everything that he's saying.
Good notes are essential. He gives you a study guide about a week prior to the tests with all terms/people that you need to know. Take advantage of this!!!! It is very much possible to do well in this class, it just requires the right mindset and amount of effort.
Talks from begging to end with out using the book. Only has 3-4 tests for the entire class making no room for error, no other grades. Test have a lot of memorization over a couple of chapters worth of work.
I do not recommend his class at all. His class demands are that of a graduates degree not a basic class.
This class is incredibly difficult, and requires high amounts of studying and note-taking if you wish to pass.
This was the hardest class I have ever taken. He talks from beginning to end. The tests are very hard and requires 7+ hours of studying. No one in the class ever made higher than a C on the tests. Do not take his class!
At first Gilbert seemed like he would be a hard professor, but after the first test, it is not bad at all. You need to take very good notes and you can not be afraid to ask questions in order to pass the class. If you make flashcard and want him to go over them before the test or need extra help, as long as you ask he will help without hesitation.
He's a really chill guy. I've definitely enjoyed him this semester and am kind of sad to go. He's a tough grader, but it makes you work for your grade instead of just skating by. (Why go to college if you're just trying to get an easy A, anyway?) Take really good notes. Possibly record lectures and listen to the afterwards.
Do not take this class! Mr. Gilbert is very nice but his class is extremely difficult. He does not go out of the book and if you use the books definitions he counts off points. He is an extremely tough grader and unless you want to devote every last second of your time to learning the material "his way" forget signing up for this class.
Great professor. A lot of people complained about his teaching but just taking half decent notes and paying attention is all you need to pass. No it's not gonna be an easy A, but he's one of the few professors that I felt actually made sure you left their class learning something new
Great professor. Show up enough. I missed a lot of days because I was moving into a new house, but he was always understanding. The tests are easy and he is willing to answer any questions you have.
Definitely have to work for your grade. The tests are incredibly hard and you have to attempt to remember everything from the past two chapters. Also the essays are a bit much, it feels way more like a writing class than a history class
