He always comes prepared to class with notes and questions. He tries to make his lectures interesting by adding random geometry facts. His is a really nice guy, and a pretty good professor. Your only opportunities for points are 2 quizzes, 2 exams, and 1 final, which makes it hard if you bomb one.
The whole class did horrible on a quiz and yet he still won't offer extra credit. He is a nice guy and an okay teacher. I just don't understand why he won't cut the class some slack and possibly curve his quizzes/tests. Basically, there are 2 quizzes, 2 tests, and 2 projects. Then there's your 30% of your grade final. The material is HARD.
Great Guy, Great Teacher. Everything that was on the exams were explained in great depth during lecture. The only reason for failing this class is if you don't go to class and don't keep up on the homework, both which are optional
This teacher is a really nice person, but he is not so great as a teacher. He goes really fast over the material and when you do ask qts. he doesn't answer them any differently than the first time he explained the concept. He really gets the math + just assumes you will too. I aced statistics and still worried about this class to the end.
Hard hard hard hard hard hard hard class. Ridiculous grading scale or whatever. (final = 30%) Just don't bomb any tests. People would be in tears when they received their test grades back. Somehow we all ended up passing. He's not a bad guy, just a bad teacher. And he doesn't have much sympathy. He's not scary, but the material sure is!
Studying is a must and so is attendance in order to pass this class. Material isn't quite too bad except for some sections. Otherwise, good professor and actually helped me receive a better grade than I technically should have gotten.
Great prof! Always answers questions, always reminds class about upcoming homework. Is always more than willing to answer questions from homework and do examples. Very clear lectures. I was very afraid of this class at first- I've never been good at math. took it without a workshop, studied, and did fine. make sure you do the homework, it helps.
Nice guy, not a very good prof though. His notes are straight from the textbook, he has conceptual questions on your exams which you aren't prepared for. He doesn't explain things conceptually, very basic, that is why a lot of people don't do well in the class. Study and make sure you know the ins and outs of every concept and you'll do well.
He is a really nice guy and a pretty good professor. He did often mumble and get off topic and tell random math theories but I recommend him!
Pretty good guy. Easy class. I would recommend him
No surprises on exams, covers all the material that will be on them. A great guy. Gets off track at times with some interesting stories. Knows his material. Take Gosling you will not be disappointed. Great guy and professor.
Class consists of optional homework assignments that I would suggest doing as exam questions are similar to homework problems, 3 problem sets which are a set of problems he assigns and grades, 3 exams and a cumulative final exam. Each exam is worth 20%, the problem sets are worth 10%, and the final is worth 30%.
Takes the time to answer questions and help those that are stuck. If you go to class and do the homework and study for his exams you will succeed. A OU graduate himself. This is the class for students that need a good instructor. Typical professors make you read the book and have you figure it out on your own, Mike explains everything.
Super nice guy who wants you to succeed! Will answer questions and go over homework/review right before a test, giving you the opportunity to get help if you are stuck. Has a good sense of humor and loves his math! Definitely will take him again. (had him at OCC)
Didn't like him, but I hear he's a better alternative than the other professor for this class. Explains things word for word out of the book and was very boring. His tests were unpredictable. I never knew what to study.
Great guy, wants everyone to do well. Clear and organized. Go to class, do the work and you'll do great.
Mike is a decent teacher. Exams are fairly straight forward and are basically some of the same problems from the hw. I would buy the solutions mauuel as it is a big help. Exams are easier than Zimmerman, a teacher that I took it the first time with. Mike is easier and with him you have a better chance of getting a better grade.
One of the best math professor at OU. Definitely recommend him. He is very helpful. Although he does kind of mumble, it's really not that bad. Would take him again if I had another math class to take.
Really nice but he tends to get off subject quickly. He rambles a lot but is very knowledgeable and always willing to help you unless you miss class. He will not give you the notes to copy if you are late or not in class and he starts class promptly.
Class can be boring, all of his notes come STRAIGHT from the book (the book is only needed for the hw). He is very helpful and understands the subject. Gosling has test reviews and tells you what will be on the test; this doesn't mean memory alone will get you a 4.0, you must be able to apply the knowledge and know why things work (as you should).
Never know what to study! He talks to himself &teaches it to himself while you watch. Doesn't collect hw. Grade based on tests & final. 2 group projects w partners. (FIND SMART PARTNERS) I ended up teaching myself after Ch.1 bc he jumps. Tests=DEFINITIONS/ wants full explanations! Heard easier than other professor though..
Great professor. Explained everything very clearly and will go over again if needed. Always open to answer questions and very fair grader. Second best math professor I've had at Oakland.
Teaches faster than anyone can write. Half of the lecture is irrelevant to what is on tests and assignments.
One of the best math professors I have ever had at OU. He likes to go off topic sometimes but he is very clear about what will be on tests and quizzes. HW is not mandatory but I noticed a huge difference in my grades when I didn't do it. Only 2 quizzes, 2 tests, and 2 projects. He is very approachable and answers questions very well. Recommended!
Very nice if you do the homework and understand the material your set. His homework was typically way harder than his tests.
Mr. Gosling is very sweet and mild-tempered. Despite the last name, don't expect Ryan Gosling. He explains the material very clearly. Use the textbook. Tests are not too hard and he curves. I recommend him.
BEST PROFESSOR EVER. I took him as a summer class and I wish all of my professors could be like him. He isn't mandatory on attendance or homework. Explains everything really well in class and willing to help you no matter what. Doesn't make you feel dumb. Very genuine person also. Test were easy. Awesome prof.
He's not a very good professor. He goes through things SOO fast so if you don't understand what he's saying, you're done. He makes his exams unnecessarily hard, picking questions you've never seen. He's a cool guy, but not the best teacher. Try to find someone who is better at explaining if you struggle.
He seems like a nice guy but he sucks at being a teacher. Goes over just the basics in class and expects you to know these in-depth questions you never learned on exams. I suggest not taking him unless you're good at teaching yourself the material.
I liked him overall. Not a bad prof. If you go to lecture, and read the book/do Aleks, you'll do fine in the class. I was impressed.
At first, I really enjoyed him as a teacher. He is very well-explained and his teaching methods are helpful. The exams are the hard part. Everyone struggles because some of the material is never discussed in class or is 5x harder than examples we learn. If the exams were in the form of the quizzes we took I would have aced the class.
Even though I didn't do well in this course, I still think he's a great prof. One of the best Math profs I've had at OU. He goes over exactly what's on the test the day before so you know exactly what you need to know. He's very nice and definitely approachable if you need help. Would definitely take another class with him if needed.
Since OU is known to be horrendous in their math department, Gosling is alright. You have a different instructor where you take your quizzes (not made by him), but he writes the tests and tells you everything that's on there. He does have a one or two hard questions on each, but tests are worth 108/100 points. I always crammed and got a 4.0.
This teacher is AWESOME!! As long as you do your textbook work, ALEKS, and go to class. I would always review the chapter we were going to learn about prior to class- Then ask questions if I still did not understand the Math after he taught it. If you do your work you are guaranteed a 4.0. Also their is free tutoring-take advantage of this!!!
A brilliant, motivated professor looking to get you an A in the class. Highly approachable, funny, and very in depth in his explanations. Explained everything even down to the vertical line test. 3 exams worth 15%, final is 30% (Cumulative). First 3 exams are out of 100, with 108 possible, final is out of 200 with 216 possible. Take his class!
Finally a professor that is passionate about what he teaches. Not only is he approachable, but he asks questions and is concerned with if you are doing well or not. He's gone from a professor for me to a friend. Great professor and highly recommended!!
Math at OU sucks but for what it is Gosling is a good teacher. No matter how much practice I did or homework I did I still struggled on the exams, there were lots of hard problems and not much time given. He is very nice and willing to help you. Very smart and kind teacher. Talk to him if you need help!
This professor seems relatively nice, but he comes across as condescending and his lectures are unorganized. He has a very big clarity problem. When students ask for help, he doesn't give a proper explanation and only confuses them more. You're much better off teaching yourself with the book than going to class.
Worst math teacher ever! He does pages of definitions and terrible at teaching period!! Math is numbers and simple, this guy turns problems into novels and goes off topic about the history of math!!
I'm probably going to fail this class, it's really confusing. I had to reread the chapters over and over to have any idea of what's going on.
He goes off on tangents a lot that he thinks are funny and are not in any way. He writes way too fast to even catch up let alone let any of the information sink in. He makes it seem like a burden to answer anyone's questions. I only got a good grade because I'm really good at math
If you are a PRO at math already you will be OK to take him if not.. you are screwed He does not go into detail on any problems he shows in class, there is a lot of work required outside of the classroom. His exams are nothing like the material that is gone over in class. I advise to take a different professor if you have not taken math in a while.
OU's best professor from the math department. I would definitely recommend taking him!
Currently taking this class. He's a very nice guy, but a lousy instructor. He moves way too fast and rambles. Frequently says "We should already know this.." Teach us the problem step-by-step first & let us decide if we want to skip steps. Unless you're a math genius, find another prof. Can't? Follow the text, get the Solutions book and a tutor.
I'm taking the class this semester too. I had some problems with him not showing all the work. I sent him an email and talked to him about it after class. People need to speak up more. He's a great instructor and very personable. He follows the book. If you attend class, ASK QUESTIONS!! Seems like he really wants to help.
Best teacher in the math department at OU.
HORRIBLE!! Avoid this professor at ALL costs. I studied for all of the tests for at least 7 or 8 hours per test and I still only passed the class with a 1.9. Highest grade I received in the class was a 72 and only by the luck that he accidentally put the wrong thing on the test and gave full credit for a 20 point question. I recommend a diff prof.
He can be quiet so sit at the front if you can
He made my semester terrible. I struggle in math and I need a professor that will work with me, however he was never available and when I would talk to him about my struggling he was not understanding or helpful at all. Do not take him if you are not strong in math. The class is test/quiz based too which doesn't help because it can break your grade
It's because of this class that I decided to change my major (totally not Prof. Gosling's fault). His class requires a solid background in mathematical concepts, and there are very few assignments in the actual class (only 6 major grades). He makes himself accessible outside of class, but isn't really clear exactly when he's in his office.
He is very specific in his notes, but if you don't look over the notes every night and do all the homework, you won't pass. Before the first exam, I just looked at the notes and did the chapter review, I failed the first exam! You definitely have to pay attention.
Gosling is a good teacher and showed many practice problems that would always end up being on the exams. Homework is not graded or checked but he always gives you more than enough to do so you understand the concepts. Make sure you do homework and study on your own so that you understand everything before the exam.
I like him as a person but I've had better teachers. He's very friendly and respectful but kinda rushes through lectures. Also doesn't give formulas for tests so I spent more time trying to memorize formulas than learning how to actually apply them. Would be nice if tests were multiple choice, especially the final exam.
Great professor compared to the rest of the math department at OU where most professors are terrible. Grades fairly. The MTH141 course I took consisted of 3 exams, 1 final exam, and online homework problems. If you want to ace the exams, make sure you do every single section problems (even and odd) from the assigned textbook. Good luck.
I would recommend you to take his courses. He is definitely one of the greatest professors at OU
Very lecture heavy but a good prof. He explains things well and will help you through any questions you have.
He is a very lecture heavy professor that looks to over complicate things that are normally really simple. My advice to you if you find yourself in his class is this: go to class so that your parents think you're doing something with your life, put in headphones, and youtube the lecture. This is because of how he makes things worse.
Professor Gosling is very smart and sometimes that's a curse to him because he skips over steps or just says the math out loud. He doesn't give you any points for homework so the course is based on 2 tests, 2 quizzes, 2 projects and the cumulative final is like over 30% of your grade. Its muy stressful, especially if you are not strong at math.
Worst professor. He writes notes and has you copy them, he goes so fast pace and skips over things because he expects you to read his mind. He is such a tough grader and his tests are nothing like he says they will be. I am usually an A math student and I struggled in his class. He also would get mad if someone didn't understand &asked a question.
The only reason I said I wouldn't take his class again is because I am not that into math. He teaches at a fast pace. How much you study, and listen during lecture determines how well you'll do overall. He is a caring person, and pretty understanding.
Professor Gosling explained exactly what is on every test and quiz and he is very helpful as well. I got a 4.0 just by taking notes thoroughly in class every day and paying attention and doing the homework, even though the homework is not for a grade. Would definetly have him for MTE 2111 if I could!
I took this class thinking it would be extremely easy. But I was wrong! This class is difficult, but you can still pass with a high grade if you do the homework and pay attention in lectures. The homework is not for a grade but I HIGHLY recommend doing it, it will help you a lot for future tests and quizzes! I ended up with a 3.9 from doing this
Good teacher. He writes notes during lecture, and has us copy them down. The amount of notes are manageable and they are extremely useful on the final. Homework is optional, and he'll answer any questions you have on it. Tests are very easy compared to the homework, so if you do that, you are always prepared. I would recommend him for sure.
Mr. Gosling is clearly fascinated by the subject he teaches, which makes for an engaging class period. Although the course content is relatively simple, part of that has to do with the way this instructor breaks down the logic in what you are doing. I greatly enjoyed his class, and would say he is the best instructor I have had at Oakland.
Professor Gosling knows what he is doing but goes way too fast pace for this math class. He grades only on tests, quizzes, and two projects. So basically if you fail one of these things, your whole grade is down in the class. He never keeps Moodle updated either. Just ask questions and maybe you will do better than I did.
TAKE HIM AND ONLY HIM FOR APM 1663. He is by far the best math prof. I have ever had. He knows the material and explains it extremely well, is an easy grader, and has actually interesting lectures. He genuinely cares about his students and does all he can to help. Show up to class, take notes, pay attention, and you'll pass the class. HE'S AMAZING
Changed my major to IT because I didn't understand APM 2663. This class was just perfect. Grades are based on 3 Exams 20percent each, 3 Problemsets 10percent all together and Final Exam 30 percent. Go to class, do the ungraded homework, do problem sets and be prepared for the Final. Best Math Professor Ever
This class was a challenge, but because professor gosling was the one teaching it made it much easier to handle. His lectures are very thorough, and goes pretty fast through them. Assignments and exams are balanced, and wants his students to be successful. Very good math class overall.
I normally don't comment but I have to say this is one of the best math teachers here in Oakland University. This class is very very difficult so make sure you practice the structure of the answers he wants from you for the exams which he'll tell you in the lectures so don't ever skip class.
BY far the best math prof I have taken, you will not go wrong taking him, he will help you succeed and pass.
Not the best not the worst. He is willing to further explain things if you need help. I think he makes topics a bit more complicated than they need to be. You don't need to show up to class, participation isn't graded, just follow along with the book. Doesn't use Moodle but provides you w info needed to calculate your own grade. nice guy
Prof Gosling is a gem. I would take a course with him again in a heartbeat. He is caring and clear. One of the best professors that I've had!
He is a great person but has a hard time getting the message across to his students about what they need to know. A lot of the times the things he says will end up on the test don't and as a result, many of the grades that come back are very low. He doesn't grade based on the regular grading scale and curves the final. Don't slack off in any way.
I have taken several math classes now for El Ed and this one by Far taught me the most about Actual teaching of math and gave skills that transcend Checking off a prerequisite. It was challenging and attendence and homework is a must to do well in the class but I honestly enjoyed his lectures. You can tell he's invested and loves To Teach and math.
TAKE THIS MANS CLASS!!! He is one of the best Math teachers I have had in a while. He explains everything easily and will take time to help you if you dont understand. He is so nice and his classes gets taken up quickly so sign up for him now you wont regret it. he gives lots of great tips for future teachers too.
Professor Gosling was not the best professor. There were only two assignments the whole semester. The rest were tests and quizzes that he graded very hard on. Along with that the tests were very vague and didnt explain what needed to be done for the problem.
This professor is very relaxed and good and conveying the material. The material itself will be presented in a syntax you likely have never seen before and so it can be a little hard to keep up, a lot of students tanked the first exam for this reason. In short, the class is very challenging at times, but the professor does a fine job.
Very good and nice Professor. He really explains things really well and tells you exactly what will be on the test. The class itself can be challenging sometimes, so make sure to pay attention.
Professor Gosling is a good professor, is accessible outside of class, and will provide electronic copies of the notes if you email him. The tests have a lot of material not covered by the graded homework sets. So, be prepared to do practice problems from the textbook outside of class time on all the materials mentioned in the lectures.
Overall, not a terrible professor. He's more than willing to help if you ask for it but his lectures and handwriting are difficult to follow along with. His exams are difficult to you really have to study and do the homework assigned in the book even though its not graded which is disappointing.
Cares about his job. Funny with some dad jokes. Takes time to make sure everyone understands. Some professors don't care to take the time to re explain things in a different way, he does it and well.
Professor Gosling is a great guy and the best math professor i've had throughout my entire education. He is caring and always willing to help you. That being said, this class is a challenge. 3 tests, a final exam and A LOT of homework. Show up, do the homework, read the book and study. If you do these things and give 110% effort, you will pass.
Mike Gosling is an amazing professor. He is someone passionate about math and clearly loves the subject. His love effects the lectures as he explains the history and purpose of the math we studied, giving more of an appreciation for the subject materials. His class is lecture and exam heavy so come to class. Highly recommend.
Mike Gosling was a good professor, though his class was difficult for me. You are graded of 3 mid-terms (60%), and Final (30%), with homework being the last 10% of your grade. His classes are all lectures until the exams, and they can get pretty boring but he is very good at helping students understand the concepts.
This class is very lecture heavy. Attendance isn't mediatory, but if you need help, show up. There is a lot of homework, but all the answers are in the textbook. He doesn't really go over example from the HW he really expects you to go over it before, class but if you do at least 70% of it you're going to get an A on the HW.
He is not the worst prof ever. He has three tests, a final, and a lot of hw. His lectures are not the easiest to understand but also not the hardest. He is very nice and chill but the class does get a little boring from time to time. You can def find a better prof to take 141 with but he really is not the worst.
A fair, chill professor. The homework from the textbook takes up a lot of time. He grades homework at the very end of semester and will give you 100% with most of it done. Grade only includes exams and homework, no quizzes.
Professor Gosling isn't the best professor ive had but he isn't the worst either. In my opinion he tries his best and the reason it's hard is because it's a hard class. The lectures are a bit boring id say and it's easy to get distracted or zone off. He doesn't post notes but goes over it in lectures. SI is your friend in this class Decent class
very nice and respectful truly cares about the students
This is a very caring professor and overall amazing. He has everyone do the homework at their own pace throughout the semester and to turn it all in at the end of the semester. He writes his notes by hand and doesn't give guided notes like the morning sessions,so choose according to your learning style. But very funny and keeps the class lighthearted.
