Mr. Healy does a great in teaching astronomy. He knows this subject, and is organized and effective in teaching it. Just be there, listen, & learn. Alert! he gives first-10-minutes-of-class popquizzes for xtra credit. Good guy too.

Mr. Healy is the best instructor I've had so far. He loves his subject and it shows. You will work hard in his class but you will learn alot. If he were 20 years younger, single, a little taller, and not a Dodger fan, I would consider marrying him!

He is a very good teacher. If you come to class everyday, you'll pass. Easy quizzes and tests. Gives great power points so taking notes is easier. Funny. All-around awesome teacher. Giants are annoying and suck! Dodgers rule!=) yeah!

GOING TO this class is like visiting a comedy club. very interesting. he made my weekly 4 hour class go by in a flash. i had a great time and got an A (but had to study for it) cram for his quizzes immediately before class (STUDY NOTES NOT TEXTBOOK)
Heals rocks! Be ready to work, though. If you take this class, don't whine about the cold. Aside from my softball class, this is the best class on campus. That is, in a large part, due to Heals's teaching style. #!@! the Dodgers!
this lab class was great! Mike was an excellent, very involved and enthusiatic about the subject and teaching. Tough quizzes- studying is a must.
Great teacher makes the class intresting. Expect a short quiz just about every class but they are a breeze if you go to class.
Mr. H is GREAT! I wish he taught every class. He teaches visually and gives great examples that help when trying to remember things on the tests. I look forward to going to his class every week. Don't try to pull the wool over his eyes, you'll lose.
I am head over "Heals". Mike is very passionate and committed. He can be a bit grumpy, but he is wise and witty. Do not hesitate...Take his classes.
Mr. Healy is the best instructor I've had so far, despite being a little moody. He loves his subject and it shows. You will work hard in his class but you will learn alot. If he were 20 years younger, single, a little taller, and not a Dodger fan, I would consider marrying him!
"Heals" is great! I don't think that the "Moody" comment the last rater mentioned was warranted. However, I second all those opinions. I still don't understand how such a brilliant, attractive, and sweet man can be a Dodgers fan. He must have been dropped sometime after birth (maybe very recently).
He will teach you how to impress dates with your knowledge of the stars. Great teacher, has a dead pan sense of humor. Take this class, you wont regret it, unless you like cheating on tests. oh and just phase him out if he starts rambling about the Dodgers.
I have to agree with most of the comments regarding Heals. I thoroughly enjoyed his class, he is a hoot. He knows his stuff and is willing to go the extra mile to help out. I feel he was extrmely fair and to those students who think it is okay to leave class early, he sometimes gives a quiz before dismissing the class.
Healy is the best science teacher EVER! He's whacky and HILARIOUS! He's also incredibly knowledgeable, brilliant, and an all-around GREAT guy. You HAVE to study for his tests if you want an A. But he gives you all the material that he tests on - he's a fair guy. Just a warning: TURN OFF YOUR CELL PHONES! He gets pissed if they ring. Rightly so :)
This guy is a bit of a nut--but fortunatly for me I have a tendancy to like that sort of thing, it helps me stay engaged. He makes the subject so enjoyable because you get that HE enjoys the subject so much. How great to sit under a teacher who still is jazzed about the subject he teaches!! One big negative however; he is an L.A. DODGERS fan.
Good class with interesting material. Healy is always telling funny stories.
Hilarious teacher. Super nice.
I took three astronomy classes with Mike; he's awesome! He's fun, light-hearted, extreamly intelligent, passionate about his subject and I can tell that he really loves to reach out to others and share his knowledge. If you don't like science then take Astronomy with Healy - it'll be the most non-painful science experience you'll ever have,
This is a great lab course! It is team-taught with Keith Waxman. Mike Healy (they both will) will take the time to help you out if your having a problem, and makes sure you understand the material before the exams. He's more laid back than Keith, but just as interesting.
Very talented and entertaining teacher. Would almost be willing to flunk his class for the chance to take it again.
he is the best!! everyone should take his class. he helps you understand things while still keeping the class funny and interesting. i've taken two of his classes and loved both. he is a great guy and doesn't look that bad either :)
Great teacher! Will tell jokes to make you remember important points in lecture - very tricky but effective! Is willing to help students succeed and makes the class interesting. I hate science and learned to love it in his class.
Awesome teacher, very easy, little reading, easy homework and quizzes. Definately keeps you awake for those evening lectures. Lots of fun, and very interesting.
wow!! not that easy... you better study your notes and do your reading or the quizzes will bury you!
Great Power point presentation keeps you interested.
Hands down one of the greatest teachers at this school. He requires alot of you - but in a way that makes you accountable to yourself. There is no fooling this one into thinking that your dog ate your homework. Be prepared for a no bs type of guy who's also entertaining, humble, wise, and extrememly knowledgable about this subject.
Very easy class, fun and interesting. Small quizes every week on the material he taught in the previous class. Lots of extra credit, after 1 EC assignment my grade moved up 8%!! Funny guy, nice, and totally cool. Great class, take it
Great teacher. He has a powerpoint that's very clear and easy to understand. There is a short quiz every week, but always based on the notes he gives you. very little reading out of the book. never any homework. the final is composed of all the tests you've done and he lets you keep them. love it =)
Excellent Teacher, who knows what he is talking about. Definitely Take Him if you can.
great teacher and very funny. knows a whole lot and makes things interesting. i recommend him.
Lab at Lake. I walked in not knowing anything. I had a great time learning about the stars and earned a B. Mike and Keith teach it together and I recommend it to all.
Healy is eager to teach, clearly introduces concepts, and loves his job. His passion for the class and his sense of humor made the course very enjoyable and educational. The material was covered in great detail and in a great atmosphere. College level professor. I wish there were more teachers like him.
In order to pass this class, its very simple. Don't miss class unless you have to. Take detailed notes and pay attention to the lectures. Study them for the quiz at the beginning of each class. Get extra credit by going to planetarium shows. Approach him if you're stuck. Easy A or B. Not always clear, but fun and enthusiastic.
Very fun, interactive and easy class. Definately one of the most interesting classes @ the JC (minus staying up till 1am at Lake Sonoma) but easy, knowledgable teacher. Funny guy.
He's a cool guy that loves astronomy. Very funny too! He explains things well but speeds up too quick sometimes. If you have any questions though, he is more than willing to answer them and go into further depth in breaks if you still don't understand. You can get help before class in his office if you have any HW Q's.
Had a really good sense of humor, the lectures are interesting but he moves fast. Take lots of notes and listen to what he says because he'll test on anything from the reading or lectures. Pretty tough on attendance. A lot of quizzes so study notes before class. 3 midterms, one final, study well and you'll pass. Extra credit opportunities.
He's a really good teacher, and the class was really cool too. Not really sure what his teaching style in the class room is since this is a field class. He comes highly recommended.
Definitely a teacher who knows his stuff! He lectures kind of fast, so take notes fast. If you go to class, take notes and look over them before the daily quizzes you'll be fine. It seems alot harder during the notes but tests were pretty easy.
he is a great guy and a good teacher. you must go to every class becasue if you dont then you will miss a lot of info for the tests. every class is just a long powerpoint and you take your notes then get tested every couple of weeks. i recommend this class very much. hes really funny and makes it pretty interesting
Him and Waxman teach a great class. Healy is funny and very helpful and the lab class is AMAZING, strongly recommend it. Not often in a class do you get to look through a telescope and see a nebula shaped like North America!
Healy is an awesome teacher. He makes Astronomy fun and enjoyable. He gives you plenty opportunities to get an A in the class if you study and show up to his lectures. The tests are mostly on the lecture but a few are from the book. Last, from an entertaining point of view, he and Waxman have a constant baseball team battle which is amusing.
Healy (Heals) is a great instructor. He goes a little fast sometimes, so it can be a little difficult to keep up with him. Also he can be a little strict sometimes so it's important to stay on task. His lectures are always crystal clear and he doesn't mind repeating himself.
Mike Healy is a fantastic astronomy instructor at the Santa Rosa Junior College. He and his partner Keith Waxman make a great team of instructors in their outstanding Astronomy 12 Lab course. I recommend Mike Healy (aka HEALS) to anyone who is interested in astronomy or simply needs to fulfill some science requirements at the SRJC.
Great TEacher..Very funny, and makes learning fun..just make sure you attend every class and do the assign reading prior to your class, if not you'll get lost, because he does cover alot of material..but great teacher overall..
I love this guy! He's informative, interesting, fun, and has a good sense of humor. Probably the best teacher I've had at the SRJC.
Honestly one of the best teachers at the school. Extremely helpful and overall an amazing teacher. Quizes you on a regular basis so be prepared but if you pay attention and take good notes you will go far!
Terrible Teacher. The Worst of the worst. STAY AWAY!!! Very biased not friendly! Grumpy old man who will make your day a living h*ll!!!
Is interesting, funny, organized, and really interested in what he is teaching. He holds you to a higher standard, but gives you the tools to achieve that standard!
Awesome professor and all around guy. He knows exactly what he is talking about and delivers it to the class in a very clear, concise manner. I realized a little too late that if you just show up to every class, take notes, and do the homework you'll get an A, it's not that hard
Healy is a great teacher. He is funny, has a very genuine interest in the subject matter, and is a very nice guy. He wants his students to come out of his class knowing the subject matter. If you aren't prepared to make a small effort at learning astronomy you won't do well, but as Healy puts it "welcome to college". Show up, do the reading, A.
Mr. Healy is a great teacher, he cares about students doing well in class. If you do the reading and listen carefully to his lectures you will do well on the weekly quizes and exam. He gives hints on what is important to know. I really enjoyed his class. I thought it was tough at first, but if you read & do your homework you will be fine
Healy's class is interesting and straightforward, and he makes a point to make his lectures different, funny, and easy to pay attention to. Homework from the book every week and a quiz on the notes from the previous week. 3 tests. He drops lowest quiz, test, and homework! He actually cares if you do well or not.
Shout out to HEALS. I'm at the 2013 giants/dodgers game right now. Best astronomy teacher ever. He said he had to teach at a "Berkeley standard" I say Heals teaches far beyond that. He is inspiring when it comes to astronomy and philosophy.
Best Professor Ever! He loves Astronomy and his level of enthusiasm made me want to go to class everyday. He wants everyone to learn. His Final was hard, but just make sure to open your textbook and you'll do fine!
Healy is a great teacher who clearly loves his job and enjoys the class. All lectures are powerpoints, but he actually knows how to make a good slideshow with lots of pictures and even little GIFs and sound clips sometimes. Homework is easy, quizzes and tests can be tricky but the final was pretty easy. Worth the time.
Clearly Healy loves his job. He preaches about space with passion and love. His test are easy, and homework is super easy. He makes astronomy fun, making it a easy environment. Healy is very humorous. Take his classes, and you will be considered lucky. Like I said, he preaches to us about astronomy like a father in a crazy church. He is a beast.
Great Teacher. I had him for Astron 4 and 12. Pay attention and take notes you will be just fine. He has quiz every class but they are not worth many points. Lots of ways to earn extra points. One note - if he gives a Power Point, still take notes even if he says its from the book, some stuff he says are on the test.
I am someone who hates science, so when I say that Heals is an AMAZING teacher, it really means something. His lectures are interesting and super clear. I took his class over summer, so it was fast-paced but he made sure we all understood the material. He's one of the best professors I've had ever. 200% would recommend!
He's a great professor!!! His lectures go fast because they're not boring. He gives out extra credit. And if u go to the classes and pay atention and do the homework you will pass!!!
Took him for a summer class and he made class super fun and interesting that it made time go by fast. Gives out quizzes but aren't too difficult same with homework. Book isn't really necessary you can get by with just taking notes. He's very passionate about the subject and definitely recommend everyone to take him for astronomy.
Funny and informative, Heals' lectures are terrific, and he makes astronomy so fun! Small test every day of class, and no mid term. Tests are easy if you were in class the week before and did the homework. Final is comprised of all the tests so study them.
Heals is hilarious! He is a great teacher and enjoyed what he teaches. I highly recommend him. I would take another class with him if I needed one. I will miss his class.
Attendance is not required, but I defiantly don't recommend skipping out on any class days. Don't miss any class days, do the extra credit, do your best on quizzes and homework, and it is a fun easy class.
So funny and explains things in a way that is entertaining and sticks in your brain.
Mr. Healy is awesome! He is great at explaining hard concepts. Don't screw around in class or you will be hearing about it. If you want a great experience in a science class, make sure to take Mr. Healy. He also has a teaching assistant named Joe who knows a ton of facts and is very willing to help. Joe is kind of cute, too!
Mike Healy isn't a hard grader, isn't actively hostile to students who don't annoy him, and makes sure to prepare you for tests. He is constantly yelling or speaking with a bombastic tone, which can get annoying. Astron 12 is strictly observational astronomy. You will be memorizing the names of stars, not learning how they function. Take ASTRON 4.
Healy (or Heals, as everybody seems to call him) is a fantastic instructor. He could teach a toaster enough astronomy to pass his class. So if you can't make it through, well........I also took Astronomy 12 and guess what? It is a one unit "Observational Lab." Astronomy 4 is a three unit lecture. It is good to realize what class you're in.
He knows about the subject, he answers your questions, he gives good advises about how to improve your grades, he makes the class so interesting. You'll love him. You can get some extra-credits as well, plus, you can even see the moon face-to-face. Beautiful. However, take very good notes because he's going to test you on that. Not just the book.
I went into Healy's Solar System class knowing close to nothing about astronomy, and I was constantly talking about the sky by the time the class ended. For a shot summer course, he teaches astronomy very efficiently. Go to class- short quiz every day!
I had him for both ASTRON 4 And the Lab Course for Astronomy. Loved every minute of it. I honestly thought astronomy would be boring and difficult but I found myself very entertained. I think he's a very attentive professor and will definitely try to help you understand the subject.
I took Astron 4 with Healy, Hes amazing. Really fun class, makes things really interesting. Free online book, but you do need to read it. Hes quiz's every class, so don't skip class. Offers extra credit. Hes Honest with grading and tells you what you need to know to pass. Highly recommend.
Healy was such a laid back professor. Show up to every class and prepare for a short quiz at the beginning of every class. Homework will be a few questions long with the use of an online book, so you dont need to purchase! He will tell you exactly what you need to know for the final. Easy A
Healy is a great teacher. Funny and pretty laid back. Show up, take notes, pay attention, and you'll have a blast. You can tell he's passionate about astronomy, and knows what he's talking about. Light homework, reading from the textbook (Free online) and multiple choice quizzes. Looking forward to taking more classes from him myself.
The instructor can deliver information during lectures but when we switched to online because of corona virus i was forced to drop since he couldn't figure out how to set his canvas in a manner that was accessible. he wants you to print homework, take picture of the homework and than email to NOT HIM but his helper so that they can grade it?!??!?!?
Healy is an incredible instructor. We have now had to switch to online in our class and the class is still great! Make sure you don't use your cell phone in class and certainly don't skip out during break as your grade will fall like a rock, like my boyfriend, who left the previous rating, did. If you can't pass Healy's class - -natural selection.
I loved Healy's astronomy class. I had taken Healy previously at Cardinal Newman High School for my freshman biology class. He has not changed one bit. In lecture, we just took notes off his powerpoint slides. The tests and quizzes were not hard. They just required memorization. When the Wuhan coronavirus started, class became a lot easier.
Astronomy was a great Gen-Ed class. Healy was very funny during his lectures and his material covered was not hard to understand. There were frequent exams that covered in class material. There was also frequent extra credit points and they were not hard to come by.
Heals is one of my favorite teachers at the JC. He is so enthusiastic about astronomy and genuinely wants his students to succeed! He made learning fun and easy to understand, plus all of the reading is FREE and online. I suggest taking him if you have the chance.
He is a great teacher and will easy to pass. He's a light grader. You have one short and easy homework assignment each week as well as a 10-15 multiple choice quiz at the start of each class. The quizzes are quite easy if you listen to the lecture and take notes. The final is based off of questions from the quizzes throughout the semester.
The way this guy sets dues dates is absolutely awful. Have a clear date for when the assignment is due man. Two assignments due the same day but one is due in the morning and one is due at night....? If you're a working parent w/ a full time job, you might struggle. Healy could not care less about your life outside of this class. Zero empathy...
WORKING PARENTS BEWARE!!!! I have never wanted to drop a class so quickly. Horrible teacher. Zero empathy and understanding. Does not have due dates to his assignments but rather uses "available until" dates to identify when items are due that are mixed with "not available until" dates for other assignments. Confusing, disorganized, unprofessional.
I took this class over the summer. Lots of quizzes, fair amount of homework. Didnt enjoy his lectures too much.
It's easy to see how much he cares about his students and science. He tries hard to help you succeed. He posts the lectures on Canvas, and he posted his lectures on Youtube as we were online learning because of covid. Despite some technical difficulties that come with online learning, he was already ready to fix them quickly and be flexible.
I took this class during Summer 2020 (fully online due to COVID) to fill my college physics requirement, and I really enjoyed it! Definitely lecture-heavy, but if you have the time/interest in astronomy they are easy to follow and interesting. Quizzes were twice a week and pretty easy if you attended the previous lecture. Highly recommend!
Professor Healy really cares about his students. People that don't do well in his class is because they don't do the work and/or they skip lectures. You will receive the grade you are willing to earn in this class. The lectures are very informative, and the class was fun. I am looking forward to taking Astronomy 3 with him this Fall.
Heals was great! Took Summer Class, 15 Quizzes, 16 lectures, 2 homework a week. Super nice guy, keeps the class engaging and really cares about the students. Get the work done, he doesnt do late work so dont ask, study for quizzes, and he makes it clear not to cheat. You shouldnt need to because if you put in the time you will get an A.
Dr. Healy was a really fun professor. Loved his class and his attitude. I didnt understand or really care for astronomy before this class. Now every time I look up at the night sky, I know whats going on and have Healy to thank
Healy is one of the best teachers I've ever had. I took astro 4 over the summer online, and it was really refreshing to have a good class for once. He records all the lectures so you can watch them on your own time (even sped up), and even at the fast pace I was able to learn everything easily and take really good notes. Take his class!
The person who rated Michael Healy below obviously didn't take Michael Healy because Michael Healy teaches Astron 4, not History, as the rating says. It's good to know what class you are in before you rate the instructor. As I said before, Mike can teach a toaster astronomy so if you can't make it through, well. There's proof right there.
I love Mike. His lecture videos were pre recorded and were easy to follow. I went to office hours maybe once and he answered my questions well. Tests were easy. They were a big portion of the grade . Would love to get to know him better. Too bad COVID 19 prevented us from taking this cool class in person
I took his biology class in high school over 5 years ago. His tests were so easy. I remember he would give us a study guide which showed questions we should know how to answer. Then the tests would only have the exact same questions on the study guide. Im glad I took biology with Healy. It looks like he switched over to teaching astronomy.
I only took astronomy as a gen ed class, but I really had a good time. Healy was very informed about the subject that he was teaching and used humor to make us more attentive. When we switched over to online learning, Healy's lecture quality did not really drop off at all. Easy A, but I definitely learned a lot from Healy's astronomy 4 class.
Healy was one of my FAVORITE instructors at the JC. He's super passionate about astronomy so the way he teaches it makes it super fun to learn. Weekly quizzes are given but all the answers are in the PowerPoints so if you took notes you will be fine. Key pointers: Pay attention, take notes and you should receive an easy A.
HEALY IS A GOD SENT FROM THE ASTRO PLANE. YES HIS LECTURES ARE LONG BUT I DID TAKE HIM IN SUMMER SO I WAS EXPECTING THAT. HE IS FUNNY AND VERY INSPIRATIONAL TO ANYONE THATS ACTUALLY LISTENING. IF YOU NEED HELP HE WILL BE THERE. THERE ARE CLEAR GRADING AND EXPECTATIONS BUT IF YOU DO THE HW YOU'LL UNDERSTAND THE LECUTRES. HW IS PRETTY SIMPLE.
One of the best professors at the JC. His lectures were great and very educational. I didn't miss a single one. He was also very funny. He was also very helpful on top of the good amount of extra credit he offers. His quizzes are a bit tough as they are short timed but other than that take his course. You will not regret it.
Heals is awesome. He's funny and he cares a lot about astronomy which makes the class fun to attend. Every class is slideshow based and class isn't mandatory unless it's Monday. He gives a quiz every Monday. If you do the homework and pay attention to the notes the quizzes are a breeze. He also offers extra credit which bumps your grade up.
Healy is the most entertaining and interesting teachers I've thus far! He has a short quiz once a week, but they aren't difficult if you pay attention to the lectures, and one homework assignment a week. You can't do make-up tests, so attendance is important. I had a great time in this class and looked forward to it every week!
Probably the best professor I have ever had! He is hilarious and obviously loves what he does. As long as you do the work this class is easy. I recommend making flash cards on Quizlet from the lectures for the weekly quizzes. HIGHLY recommend. I wish I could take more of his classes.
Couldn't recommend his class more. He's retiring this year and it's sad to see him go. He was the best science proff and teacher I have ever taken and I didn't miss 1 class. I have been close to failing every science class I have ever taken but Healy has been the only teacher to make science understandable to me and for that I'm eternally grateful.
He's the funniest teacher I've ever had. Sucks that he's retiring this year but honestly I had a blast. The stuff he would do and say each class always made me laugh and I was always entertained. 10/10 class
