Dr. Hilmer makes it quite obvious that he truly cares about his student's education and ability to learn. He is more than willing to help his students when they ened it- especially during office hours. My only complaint would be that he moves very fast through the material- it's hard to grasp everything for those of us who don't speak "econ"
he's HOT. he also cares a lot about his students doing well and is very accessable, also provides you with info about tutors. he does rush through the material during lectures, but if you do your reading before the midterms and go to class you should do great!! he also lets you not take one midterm!!
VERY HARD! You must go to every class and keep up. If you do not understand it from the beginning you will not make it.
I really don't like his class. He moves WAY too fast (especially for such a huge lecture hall) and makes you feel inferior when answering your questions. I DEFINITELY don't recommend him :/
His class is really really HARD. I wouldnt recommend taking it. He goes really fast, and leaves you with no ideas of what is going to be on the Midterms.
class is hard but managable, he covers A LOT of material in lectures, try not to get behind at all in this class or you won't make it out alive, sit up front b/c this guy's hot!

prob the hardest class iv ever taken. you have to go to every class or you will fall way behind. his office hours are really helpful, he will walk you through anything you need. hes a really nice guy even though he doesnt look like it.
I would recommend another professor. He goes WAY too fast, as if you already know the material. He is HOT, though!!
Hardest class ever! Hilmer is such a nice guy by the way hott! But, he is not the greatest professor he goes way to fast. I got a C- in the class and that is because I went to office hours..I have to re-take the class and I will be choosing a different professor!
His class is really hard. BUt he curves your grade so much. Make sure to do really well on aplia(online questions/homework) and then you can do crappy on the midterms. I did this and got a C in the class.
tests are really hard. avg. of my class was usually always an F but he curves ALOT.i got a B 2 D's and an F on the tests and ended up with a B in the class.Hard class but curve brings grade up.and i never went to class.Online hw assign. every week.make sure to do them!lets 2 slide.dont have to take one test.
Hard teacher. He is not very helpful at all and he talks so fast during lecture. I would take another teacher if possible. I got a B only because of the curve but the class avg was an F. Online hw assignments due every friday!
Hilmer is a brillant man..but almost too smart to teach such a low level Econ. I pulled an A out of the class because he curves and the class ave. was WAY low and I averaged a B-so the curve gave me an A. MUST GO to class everyday, book is helpful, TAs are nice....he just can't break it down enough, little scrambled, hard to reach for ?s
online assignments due every week and some can be hard but he drops the lowest 2. The 3 midterms are very hard the class avg was an F but with the curve, I got a B in the class. He talks very fast and always until the very end of class, the lectures are long and boring.
He tried helping students by choosing a cheap online book. Nice thought, but the book sucked. He goes very fast during lecture with no time for questions. IF he keeps the book, make sure you do the weekly assignments. Encourages office hours and TA meetings and provides them. ENS class size not for him. Should be smaller class. Great curve.
hilmer, you are an alright guy. but note to self: it's econ 101. it should be kept at a general, basic level of understanding. econ is a cool subject, but we are not all econ majors and we do not need to be bombarded with minute details and 50 million graphs.
I don't understand the complaints. If you kept up with the reading and wanted to learn the subject more, he was very good. Took ECON101 and 102 at the same time, and his class is the reason I did well in the other. LOTS of information NOT on the test. Take clear notes and you'll do fine! Oh, he grades on a curve! ;) YAY!
pretty easy. didnt go to class for a month. lecturs are online. class average for the final was like 25% lol.
THIS CLASS WOULD HAVE BEEN EASY IF YOU GO TO CLASS AND ACTUALLY DO YOUR READINGS. SOMETIMES HIS LECTURES DON'T MAKE SENSE BECAUSE HE GOES AT A FAST PACE. I DID NOT STUDY AT ALL AND I SHOULD HAVE FAILED BUT HE STILL GAVE ME A C. HE GRADES INDIVIDUALLY AND HIS CURVE IS UNBELIEVABLE
Had a hard time keeping up with his slides, but they're online so print them out and take them to class and just add to those because he goes at a fast pace. He grades on a HUGE curve, if not for it half the class would have Fs. He tries to help as much as he can-- go to his office hours!! a lot of what he covers is NOT on the tests.
Class was just ok. Nothing great about this professor. Grade is based off three midterms, a final (optional) and Aplia online work. Book is sort of optional, but does help in understanding. Has practice midterms online; they only help a little bit.
His class has a crazy curve. Not an easy class esp. for a principles. Avg grade for midterm 3 was a 54. Hes one of those professors thats too good to teach a low level class. If you like your grade to rely on a curve go for it. if not good luck. im a junior w/ a 3.84 GPA, going into the final i barely have a C. But there is a curve...so i dunno
This professor is extremely helpful, always willing to assist his students. If you just try theres no way you can **** up! Class does require time but Hilmers awesome!
This guy confuses himself at least 2-3 times each lecture. His practice tests barely help and the last midterm is ridiculously hard. He's a smart ass and acts like he knows everything. His class has a huge curve. 14% of the class gets an A or A-.
Probably one of the worst profs I have ever had. He is VERY impersonal, very arrogant, and thinks he is above and beyond the world. He stares at his computer and will not talk to you when you walk in his office. His lectures dont' correspond with homework and his tests are VERY confusing, and he doesn't prepare you for them.
I actually liked this professor. Most of his lectures made sense but some didn't. Never went to office hours so I don't know if he's helpful. Aplia is easy if you put in the effort and tests you MUST study for.
difficult to follow so make sure you attend lecture and do aplia!! This guy doesnt doesnt come off as a nice guy, or approachable for that matter but the cure at the end of class helps a lot...
this professor talked too much about the same thing over and over again. his tests were tricky and did not correspond well to lectures and they are a waste of time. curve at end is only thing that gives u a decent grade.
This teacher taught the class like he was talking to himself. He also didnt realize that the students in his class are not familiar with all the theories behind econ. and when he taught he talked about complex ideas like we were supposed to know about them already. Online hw was annoying and hard even with a book. Test were theory based also.
Wonderful professor who makes the material so simple. This is the perfect summer class!
useless class mostly because of the ineffectiveness of this professor. i am sure he is a smart guy but not a good teacher at all.
He's a nice guy and he explains things well, with examples and real-life situations, but the class is hard. He's not very helpful in office hours. Overall, I don't recommend him.
Mike is a great professor in San Diego State University. You have to study hard to get good grade if you won't study well then good luck to you. He is very helpful and explaine materials well. All his test relate to his lecture + textbook. Take him he is great.
this class was real hard. it was my second time taking it and my grade was worst than the time before. good guy but isnt that great of a teacher
He is a terrible professor. This class is really hard.
easy class, you don't even need to go to it. these other people don't know what they are talking about. he was nice too. i recommend this professor.
Hilmer is great! He keeps things interesting. If you go to class, pay attention and do the pratice tests you'll do fine. His grading scale is kind of weird, but it's not unfair.

I had such a difficult time in this class. Make sure you go to class because if you don't, you'll get confused. He's very passionate about this subject, but a very boring teacher. He walks around in the front of the classroom a lot, never stays still and NEVER looks at his students while lecturing. I wouldn't recommend him.
Yeah, don't listen to the bad reviews, he a pretty chilled guy who knows what he's talking about. His exams are extremely easy and are just based on practice quizzes online and his lecture. DONT BUY THE DAMN BOOK. You won't need it, promise. Also view the PPT's. His curve is rediculous huge, Impossible to fail. Finished with 85% which gave me an A
Best Econ professor I've ever had. He comes off as a obnoxious jerk, but in reality he is funny & cares about the students who care about the class. Come to class everyday unless you're good at teaching yourself off his slides which break things down anyway. Definitely not what most of my econ professors in the past have done.
haha the easiest class ever... he gives you notes on powerpoint online and his tests are based off his lecture quizzes which are on blackboard and dont count towards your grade but ot help you. I didn't go to class except for the three midterms and got an A. If you take the 3 midterms you dont have to take the final
Overall this was a pretty easy class. I ended with an A. The key to this class doesnt have a whole lot to do with just going to class but rather just doing the online mini quizes and taking the practice exams. The one Webquest assignment is pretty simple to get a good grade:just turn it in. Dont buy the book its never used.
he knows his stuff. gives alot of opportunity for help and tutoring. do the lecture quizzes (not part of grade) some test Q's are taken right from quizzes. has practice exams. go to class unless you can teach yourself from the blackboard slides. cares about his students that care to learn. liked him alot
hot guy . but damn this class was hard..let's just say the class average was a D. curve should help you, since everyone fails. got a 48% and ended up with a C.
Good teacher. Really tries to help the students. DON'T buy the book. All the quizzes are by the lecture. Take the mini quizes online, they really help. Some of the midterm questions are from the miniquizes. the webquest is really easy.
Eww I don't like this class. He's a nice guy and I don't have anything against him, but he's not clear at all, jumps around, and it's really hard to connect the concepts and piece it together for the tests. Way too confusing--I'd take someone else. Also, being in a class of 500 students didn't help the confusion.
I hate math but I loved his class. I think this is the highest "math related" grade I've gotten in awhile. Go to class; period. That's the only way you'll do well. He's really funny too and doesn't talk in a mono-toned lecture voice. I thought he was interesting and had a good way of breaking down the material. Takehim or you won't do well in econ!
This class is difficult at the beginning, but once you get the basic concept, and how to study, it gets easier. Just go to every class, do the online quizes, and ask him questions after class and you will do alright. It takes effort though. I ended up getting a perfect score on the final.
he was fine but the class was huge and u didnt have to go to class so i didnt, but u should. he helps explain econ a lot better in class and the time that u do go will pay off. the tests seem easy but u really gotta kno wat ur doin cause it is confusing and take the final cause its easy. its really not that bad... just go to class and ull b good.
Okay this class is cake, really. Go to class as much as possible, and he posts lecture slides online so it helps bringing them to class and following along. TAKE THE LECTURE QUIZZES! Even if they're not graded, it helps to do them and NOT right before a midterm. Most of his midterms are made up from the lecture quizzes. Plus he's funny =)
Really nice guy and really fun to look at because he is really cute but not a very good teacher. Go to his office hours if you need help because if you get Bs on the tests you could easily get an A in the class. He curves and that helps a lot.
Hilmer is not as bad as everyone makes him out to be. Pay attention in lecture and go to every class meeting! It'll benefit you greatly! But if you get lost, go to his office hours, he highly encourages it and is very helpful. If you study and take the time to understand the material, you'll pass. If you slack off, too bad for you.
Go to class, he has a way of explaining the notes that will help you understand and remember it for the tests. Use everything he gives you (notes, hw, extra quizs) to study for the tests because they really do help.

Fantastic teacher; among the best I have ever had. He relates well to students and makes it a joy to learn. No need for private Economics tutoring to do well.
Hilmer is the most intimidating teach I have ever had. While he provides plenty of material for review, do not even think about going to his office hours. He will scare you & yells as opposed to talking. Go to TA office hours & you will pass. Easy enough.
This professor definately knows what he is talking about, but is pretty hard to follow. The only real reason I attend class is because I am interested in Economics, but he makes studying very easy because of the slides and practice tests and makes it very clear that he is able to help after class, though i never needed it. good teacher
Huge class, easy if you review. Homework's are easy keep up with the notes.
Impossible if you don't go to class, and going to class is death! Avoid taking this class at all costs, I don't know how anyone could enjoy this class even the TA's said he makes it ten times harder to understand.
If you can understand economics, take this class. one quick hw a week, only have to take 3/4 tests including the final. Easy if economics makes sense to you at all.
WORST TEACHER~ He thinks he's too cool for everyone and Doesn't care about people who are failing. Doesn't do a good job at explaining things and gives hard tests... I personally didn't like him because when I would go to his office hours he made me feel really stupid and one time even told me that I was dumb... Don't recommend him as a teacher
uses the worst analogies. he's cocky but if you go to TA office hours, you should do fine. huge class but only one 10 question homework each week & 3 midterms & 1 final but you don't have to take them all dep. on your grade. take another teacher if you can.
Knows econ and makes it easy to understand. Pay attention in class and most of all go to class and you will have no problem getting a good grade. Easy class and good instructor.
1st of all, HE IS REALLY HOT!!!! If you take this class for one thing and one thing only, he is really easy on the eyes. 2nd of all, I almost fell asleep in this class a handful of times. If you love econ, you will love this class. However, if you are like me and hate econ, you will hate this class. Keep up with the notes! See the TAs! GO TO CLASS!
I only showed up for 2 lectures & on exam days and got an A. He's sexy, and I wish I would've woken up early to go watch him. Read his slides online and you'll be fine. Don't buy the book.
First off, Hilmer is hot! Do not buy book. Everything in lectures. Just go to every class and you should be fine. Never needed to see the TA's, but heard it REALLY helps. Study last semesters' midterms. TAKE ALL 3 MIDTERMS if u do well enough you can skip final. I skipped final and still got an A. Grades on a curve.
DONT BUY THE BOOK. he told us on the 1st day of class that u wont need it. GO TO CLASS. i took advantage of the fact that u dont have to go cuz he posts all the lecture slides online. but going to class really helps improve your midterm scores. and also he has a HUGE CURVE which is awesome cuz i actually had a D in the class but it got me up to a C
TAs were extremely helpful. Econ is difficult unless u naturally get it. Go to class!!! U should review constantly!!! Hilmer is a decent teacher
dont buy the textbook. His final is optional so try to do well on the midterms. I stopped going to class after the first midterm ( i had the class three days a week) and still managed to get an A without going to a SINGLE class other than the days of midterm two and three. i learned all of the material on my own via his WONDERFUL power points. his
very straight foward teacher. tutor hours very helpful. but best part is the HUGE CURVE.
Great teacher. If nothing else he scares everyone and yells at dumb people. His teaching was very clear and went slow enough to understand everything he is saying. Inspired me to become an Econ major. I wonder how far he could throw me...
very cocky teacher. he knows it all.if you ask questions he pretty much tells you youre stupid. but other than that he really knows his stuff and if you like econ this is a good class. nice curve.
If you are good at studying on your own and processing large amount of information or have an interest in economics, congratulations, you will do well in Hilmer's class. I don't like Econ and Hilmer just added to my confusion. Hilmer is very intelligent and thoroughly enjoys what he does, but wont convert the disinterested. Also, his curve is nuts.
Worst professor ever. He reminds me of the type to get a PhD just to call himself a doctor. He doesnt teach a thing. Don't take!
I hate this teacher!!dont ask about ur grades cuz he doesnt really care about them even if hes the one effin it up...class was bareable ...i got a c..all u do is take notes...3 midterms and a final... the final screwed me over soo i suggest to do good in the midterms
he was cool, but kinda made you feel dumb with questions
This guy sucks and is way too much into himself. I could barely stand lectures, boring and didn't like the guy haha. Try to take someone else.
i dont know why everyone is saying hes bad! it was the easiest class ever. HUGE curve. posts all the notes online, i never went to class & was still caought up because he summarizes previous lectures. so easy & hes hot.
HORRIBLE HORRIBLE HORRIBLE! Dont take him if you can avoid it. He is an ass!
Okay, he is NOT that bad. If you pay attention then the exams should be a breeze. Everything on the exams can be found in the lecture slides, which he posts online. Come to class for a better understanding. Don't buy the book! HUGE curve. A 50% gets you a C-, I believe. I don't recommend this class if aren't willing to work for your grade.
Probably one of the worst classes I have ever been in. He's very repetitive and is not clear at all. My best advice is to meet with his TA's as often as possible because they will teach you more than he will.
Don't take this class unless you already have an idea of the subject itself. he does curve, but he's to no help since the class is so large. He does offer TA's as help.
Hilmer's not THAT bad...if you come to class and actually pay attention you'll do fine on the tests. If you don't come to class, you just have to go over the lecture slides and you'll be fine too. Don't buy the book, you'll never used it! remember to do the online homework! o and the curve is amazing!
Better off taking Econ101 at a local community college. I struggled the entire semester.
Very hard class. He takes everything to such a complex depth. Only way to get through is to use the office hours and review sessions. I would miss 1 or 2 classes and feel totally lost, so must go. I got a C but didn't try as hard as I could have, plus I'm horrible at math & there's lots of formulas
Really hard class!
Don't take him if you can avoid it. His lectures are extremely boring. Yeah, he curves and the exams are straight from the lecture.. he's just so damn boring.
This is a very difficult professor and you need to go to class, you need to pay attention and if you don't understand GO SEE THE PROFESSOR. This is a 101 class and the professor is at your disposal if you study and talk to him you WILL do well.
This is just a hard class. I suggest printing off the slide sheets and bringing them to class. Lots of opportunities to get help. You have to pay attention and study. AT ALL COST AVOID THE FINAL. I took the three midterms and skipped the final and got a B-, I heard the final killed people. So take all three midterms and opt out of the final.
Professor Hilmer is a great professor. This is a really hard class if you're not willing to work and study hard. If you study hard and go into his office for help everything will go great for you. He is willing to help and answer questions, he is always there for everyone, but you have to take the initiative to go and look for his help.
TAKE ALL TESTS, THESE PEOPLE ARE TRIPPIN I TOOK HIM TWICE AND THE CURVE WAS THE BEST THING THAT EVER HAPPENED FOR ME. VERY BORING AND HARD TO RELATE MATERIAL TO TESTS. DO PRINT LECTURES AND BRING TO CLASS TO HELP TEACH YOURSELF>..
He is a good teacher just study off the lecture notes and you will do fine.
I dunno why anyone would say its a hard class, I never went, studied the lecture notes the night before the test, did the HW and got a B, i didnt take the final either. The class has a nice curve too, you grade will go up by a letter usually with the curve.
Went to class a whole 4 times, missed 2 homeworks, didnt take the final and got an A. Go to class when he reviews for the tests. Went to his office hours when I was confused and his TA helped me alot. So yea great teacher. If you go to class he is nice to look at.
avoid if you can. the only good thing about this class is the curve.
He only follows his interpretation of economics.
Great Teacher for 401, going to class and paying attention half the time, and studying the night before the two tests and one final got me a B+. He is a very smart professor and will likes to keep things very simple
OK, FIRST OF ALL...i only went to his class like 5 times. Took all the quizes online. Got a D but thanks to the curve, got a C. i dont know why people keep on ****#$ about this class.
if you want an A you should print out the slides, go to class, pay attention, review notes before tests, and do weekly hw. Hilmer is pretty easy if u put the effort in, especially with the curve. I only got one A on the midterms, ddnt take the final, and ended up with an A-
Hard to pay attention to lectures because they're boring, but really easy to understand if you do. Don't actually need to go to class. I taught myself everything off of the slides. Easy easy class.
This class is hard but easy to pass because of the curve. Just don't forget to do the WEEKLY homework assignments and practice midterms and quizzes they help a lot with the tests!
Not that hard. First test is all on what everyone did in high school. Class gets harder as time goes on but not that bad. He is pretty boring though, i fell asleep just about every class. If you take first three tests, you dont have to take final
Easy easy easy, there is a pretty big curve in his class, as long as you are smarter than most of the other 500 kids haha, not that hard... Don't buy the book, he even tells you not to. I ended up with an A and didn't even have to take the final, which is cumulative, so i would suggest just doing good on the first 3.
Very easy class if you attend! Dont buy the book, he even tells you. he posts last semesters midterm and the questions are totally different from the current midterms. So I suggest study study study. I prolly gonna ended up with an A.
This is a difficult class, but the curve helps tremendously. The practice midterms really do help you study. All the slides are posted on Blackboard. The material is dry, so it's hard to pay attention in class at times. He is condescending and arrogant, so don't be surprised if you receive that kind of response when emailing him questions.
Am I the only one that thinks this guy MAKES it hard? COME ON its a 101 class!!! What the heck! A+ helps for all the practice but you really really need to understand what's going on to get some of the questions right on the test, they're very tricky.
I was skeptical going into this class, because I head that it's a bit tough. But, if you enjoy actually learning something, Hilmer is good. He gives good examples and explains things well. You really do have to go to class and pay attention though. The curve is huge, and don't buy the book. Study practice exams, they help loads. I enjoyed it! :)
Class is hard. Go to his office for help if you need it. Dont buy the book-waste of money. 500 kids, power points, does A LOT of graphs. Very monotone. You can choose not to take one of the midterms, but that makes you HAVE to take the final: cummulative.
This class is a joke. The curve is the greatest thing out there. Make sure you do all of the hw, it may seem like nothing but trust me it helps your grade. Don't miss any of the first three tests. Heard the final was hard and really dropped peoples grades. Print out the slides and make sure you actually study and you should pass with at least a B
Hard! It was so difficult that grades had to be curved down to 80% for an A. Half the class fails, nearly EVERYONE has had a case of falling asleep. And he makes the most simplest concepts so hard to understand. I am unhappy with this class. I definately recommend to NOT take this class! I am a Junior taking this for the first time. I am a B studen
All the people on here who are complaining are just stupid. Just go to class and pay attention, it's not that hard. Do the HW... it's 20% of the grade and it's easy Pay attention and study the slides and youll do fine, plus there is an insane curve. I don't get how people can expect to get a good grade by not trying. then again, it is SDSU.
The class is pretty straight forward go to class and take notes and you will be fine...there are 2 midterms and the final is cumulative there are about 5 HW assignments but if u do them u get the credit...he curves all the grades I would definitely recommend taking this class
Very boring class, though you only have to go to class for the midterms. I went to class most of the time and regret it. Could have got D's on the tests without going to class. The curve HELPS A LOT, had a D average on the tests and didn't take the final and ended up with a C+
Hilmer is the Man. Make sure you take him. Go to class and pay attention. Do the one, easy weekly hw assignment and study a little before the tests and you will get a good grade. Overall, it is an easy class but it does get boring during the lectures. Just make sure you pay attention so you understand the material.
He is an awesome prof!! Make things really easy to understand, gives simple homework assignments (with questions that show up on the tests), and practice exams before the actual exams. You don't have to go to class but if you do it is extremely useful! And there is a huge curve at the end of the year! You are able to drop one of the 4 major tests
take him. Either you like him or you don't. You have to like his teaching style. I liked his teaching style because I like big curves and study guides and online homeworks. I did have to go to TA office hours however to pass but thats because Econ is a little tough. and Don't buy the book he even tells u not to.
Good teacher. He makes the concepts easy to understand by making the graph charts. Go to his office hours, he will tell you what you need to know for the test and he will summarize these to you. Interesting, starts lecture with the current news. If he teaches 102, I will definitely choose to take him.
He was straightforward and the to the point. Best professor I had thus far.
I was in a freak stripper pole accident, missed a test, and got a D on the final and still got a B-, work hard, play hard.
Easily the most boring class I have ever taken. Hilmer explains things over and over again, only about 20 mins of class are useful. Pretty arrogant guy, doesn't look at his students when they ask a question. If you do not pass this class though you are a fool since at least 80% of people pass.
He's pretty alright. When he isn't using a powerpoint slide write down what he writes. This stuff he wants you to pay attention to/he tests on this. I wish he would open up the online hw on monday so you have more time, opening it up on thursday means you're more likely to forget about it till the last minute on Sunday. Use his office/TA assistants
Easiest class ever taken.. Hands down!! I went to class twice at the beginning of the semester, and then only showed up for the midterms. Do the online hw and just study the powerpoint slides a little before the tests. The ppt has everything! Definitely used this class to sleep in and still got an A :) Don't bother getting the book. totally useless
He was pretty useless. He decided to teach it strait from the textbook which basically meant that he used the slides from the textbook company and skipped over half of them. I went to class to take notes from the chapter rather than listen to him talk, but i had to go to class because otherwise i wouldn't have known what chapter we were on!
Hilmer was one of the worst teachers i have ever had. he sounds like a drone and is soooo boring i nearly always left early or fell asleep during lectures. if you have questions, he will try to answer them but you normally end up more confused than before. I got a C+ in the class while my friend who took a different teacher online got an A
Hilmer is full of himself and what he does. Didn't learn a thing from him all semester. Doesn't care about anybody who is not a "top scholar" and is unbearable to even be around. I would like to never hear from/about/ or see this cat ever again. people like him do not make the world go round.
I never went to class except to take the midterms because class was so boring and pointless. No one ever pays attention. However, I ended up failing the midterms because they are really hard. I have friends who got As in the other econ classes who never went to class. So, if you want to get an A in an econ course DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS!
SUPER BORING!! He always draws the same graph every single class and talks about the same stuff. There are 3 midterms and a final, which is cumulative.your lowest test grade gets dropped, including the final. There is also online homework, but it's super easy. however, the tests are pretty difficult. overall, this class was stupid.
Boring, talks a lot but he gives a really nice curve in his class and he lets you skip a midterm or the final.
Here's the deal: this class is hard. I would NOT recommend it to anyone. It's not only difficult, but to add insult to injury, large lecture is unbearably boring and about half the people in class usually end up asleep after the first 20 minutes. I have friends that took the class with other professors and got easy A's.
HARDEST professor I have ever taken! You dont know your grade throughout the class, except for before the final, and even then that's not your guaranteed grade because the whole class is graded on a curve. I had no problems with any other class this semester. TAKE ANOTHER PROFESSOR!
This teacher did not teach me anything, everything is basically on your own and up to you. The tests are very hard because you have to teach yourself the material if you want an A. I understand that its not all up to the teachers to spoon feed us everything but this course is a GE for a lot of non Econ majors aka me. So help us out and teach!
Attendence not mandatory: this is an online class so you basically teach yourself everything and he does a horrible job reviving it for 30 mins once a week. Tests were almost all repeats of hw questions so it was easy and you didnt have to take the final. dont buy the book youll never use it just use his powerpoint slides and homework questions
You teach yourself, but he does a good job of reviewing if you tried on your own. Homeworks are easy, due weekly and mostly definitions. You have unlimited tries so if you don't get 100% you're either lazy or useless. Tests are easy if you review the hwk and MEMORIZE THE VOCAB/STUDY CH NOTES in the book.It really helps! Easy A with reasonable effort.
This is a self-teach class. The homework is IMPOSSIBLE to fail, seeing as he drops your 3 lowest grades and gives you unlimited amounts to get 100%. The first 3 classes are a waste of time, he is a very repetitive man. His lectures consist of "current events" that deal little to the course material and are of no assistance. Read and you'll do great
Dont ever take this class. His lectures are pointless and you learn nothing. Im still unsure how i got a C+ in the class but just dont take this class. Waste of time! No need to buy the book. Everything is online
Homework online, mostly 1 chapter per week, average 30 multiple choice questions. 3 exams, about 40-50 multiple choice questions each. Very brief notes provided online for each chapter. Final, 65 multiple choice questions.
HORRIBLE teacher. DO NOT take him if you don't Absolutely have to. Extreme lack of knowledge on subject, answers many Q's with "ah honestly, i don't know". teach yourself kind of class. weekly hmwk, 3 tests, one cumulative final, drops one test or you can not take one. read the book & cross your fingers for this one. No easy A's here.
Cannot believe how easy it was. Never went to class, studied the PowerPoint for a few hours before each test. Grades with a real curve and lets you drop any test you wish (so I didn't have to take the final).
His lectures are very brief beware and they just review. You have to teach yourself pretty much and there are three midterms and no studyguides. If you are the smart kid who can do nothing and test well, this class if for you, if you have to study like crazy then maybe not. I'm surviving but not enjoying it
This is a 1/2 online 1/2 lecture class. Pretty much every week you do 2 chapters. Hw is due every Tuesday night online, and he reviews everything on Thurs. The class can get very difficult if you miss the lectures, because he clears a lot of stuff up from the hw. Their are 2 TAs and his office hours so if your struggling, this solves your problem.
This class was interesting for someone with an interest in economics. You are required to teach yourself most of the material, but with the book and powerpoints provided it is fairly easy. He grades on a curve. I quite liked him as a teacher, and liked the class in general. I would recommend it.
Felt like this class was DESIGNED for students to fail. Prof. was VERY "black & white" & left no room for excuses. Prof. didn't really make himself available and pushes T.A's. Prof. does allow for one dropped test & three dropped homeworks. He is very knowledgeable in subject area, but not a real people person. Choose elsewhere.
He is the least helpful professor and is not a people person. The homework is fine but the midterms and finals are hard. THIS IS A COMPLETELY SELF TAUGHT CLASS. Grades on a curve so your grade also depends on what other students get in the class. You could deserve an A but get a B or C instead. I do not recommend this class!
Attended lecture 3 times the entire semester and got a B+ but I did study really hard and taught myself basically everything out of the book.
His grading scale is helpful for some people but not everyone. It can actually hurt you. The homework is extremely easy, but the midterms and finals are quite difficult. You pretty much teach yourself. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!
don't have to show up to class at all and if you read the text book and do the homework's you should get an easy B, just you have to teach everything yourself but its really not hard
Do not take this class it was bad.3 midterms and a final. If you take all the midterms you can skip the final. Weekly homework online. Hardest class i have ever taken, he does not help at all
Go to class & take notes! Extremely helpful, offers the best suggestions! Knows her resources. Told us not to buy the book b/c better option - buy Aplia.
For everyone who said this professor is hot, it's actually his wife who is. Prof Hilmer mostly rambled in class and didn't really teach. You really have to teach yourself and you don't know what your grade is until the end of the semester.
I'm taking this class right now, and I can honestly say that it is a self taught class. I get more from reading the book and doing the online homework than listening to him talk about current events and saying: "Yep, you know this already" and not reviewing stuff during lecture. Midterms are easy if you do the homeworks and study an ave
Good public speaker? Yes. Effective teaching style? Nope. Organized? Nope. Cares about students? Nope. Responds timely to emails? Nope. Approachable? Nope.
If your good at teaching yourself then this is the class for you. Read all the chapters and you will get an A. If you need clarifying then attend lectures.
Nice guy, but class does not cover what is on test. You can easily get an A in this class, if you read the text book line for line and read his powerpoints every day for 3 hours. His tests are extremely detail oriented and you are graded on 3 midterms and 1 final.
this subject was hard and extremely boring, but it wasn't that hard of a class. The half online class is the way to go because everythine on the modules is what is on the tests. There are 3 midterms and a final but if youre happy with your grade you dont need to take the final. He almost always bumps grades up as well. I had a 76% but still got a B
Took his online summer class. READ THE BOOK! if you read, you will get an A. Stop being lazy!
I found his class to be very interesting. He is approachable, if you go to his office hours he is very helpful. And you don't need a textbook for his class.
DO NOT take this class unless you're an incredibly good independent learner. A plus review is the only way I was able to pass this class. He doesnt teach you anything so going to his lectures are pointless. I would not suggest this class to anyone
Never went to class got a B literally spent 30 min on the class a week. Took 101 and 102 concurrently got a B and an A so ya didn't fail both like they said
Horrible teacher. Leaves you guessing as to what will be on the midterm and final. He curves, which is good, but when you fail an exam and still end up with a high B something is wrong. Is very condescending towards students as well. And is the HARDEST grader I have had at State.Avoid this class if possible. No text, but would've learned more with one
This class was dreadful. He didn't clarify any info for the tests and when the time came to the test all the questions were set up to trick you. Take with differ teacher.
EASY CLASS!! The people who failed were the ones who didn't show up. It's a hybrid course for God sake, you only have to show up one day, just do it. He gives the previous year's midterms before each test and some questions are even word for word on the actual test. Oh, and whats really cool, if you like your grade you don't have to take the final.
Interesting Professor. Really knows the subject. The concept is a little hard to understand but he works with everyone, understands that not everyone in the class is sports literate, and gives slack on tough projects. As long as you take notes in his class and listen, you should get an A.
Its a hybrid class so the hw is online You can find the answer online so easy getting 100% He's not very good at teaching Goes over pp slides TOO FAST You actually need to read to pass the midterms but if you have someone who already took the course ask for the midterm test, VERY similar. 3 midterm + final you can choose not to do a test
I found attending class to be extremely useless. He goes over irrelevant current events and draws a lot of graphs that don't really clarify anything. Attending class never prepared me at all for the midterms. Everything I learned from this class was self-taught. Only benefit is that there is minimal homework and class is once a week.
He is a very interesting professor if you're an econ major. However, I do not think he is good at making the subject palatable to those who aren't interested in economics. In my own opinion, I think he is the best professor for econ 101. Just read the textbook and study and do the online homework assignments.
This professor is horrible. If you take this class, expect to have to teach yourself 21 confusing chapters of economics. He does nothing to help get you ready for the final and unless you are naturally good at economics, do not expect to do well in this class.
Professor Hilmer is not a pushover. He is a little rude, but I can see why as he deals with 300 students all the time. Make sure you go to the TA tutor. They know their stuff and they will actually help you. I don't think the professor is bad, though he is tough. He gives you the previous year's exams so review those. Never been so happy to get a C
Hilmer really needs to work on making his class better. His class consists of a really boring 300 student lecture and online homework. He gives 3 cumulative midterms that give you the option of not taking the final. Then his grading scale gives a chance for a good grade but gives a lot of students D's and F's. Overall I wouldn't recommend him.
It was very hard to stay motivated for this class because he's not the best teacher. The lectures have so many students that it feels worthless to go to because he moves very fast. Definitely go through the powerpoints and homework explanations for the exams. It's all there.
I took Hilmer's hybrid ECON 101 class. Don't take this course unless you are willing to teach yourself econ. The once a week lecture didn't allow for him to really teach us anything. And what he did try to teach was confusing because of his teaching methods; kind of unorganized and messy. I would recommend the twice a week lectures.
Go to class, take notes, draw the graphs & label them. If you find the answers to homework online at least review the homework questions on BB. REVIEW THE PREVIOUS EXAMS ON BB. Review class notes. Try to make connections on concepts. You wont really know your grade till after the final but try hard and study a little more than usual.
The absolutely most horrible class I have ever taken. DON'T TAKE for absolutely any reason. Try to get a better professor at any cost. When you fail every single test and still pass with a C, you know something is awfully wrong. Didn't learn a single thing in this class. STAY AWAY!
Professor Hilmer is one of the best instructors for the econ department. He cares about students that want to learn and takes the time to explain if you come to him for help. He has a very sarcastic personality, but I think that’s what makes him so interesting. He knows a lot about his subject and always talks about current events.
Hybrid Class. I think if you are willing to study hard by yourself, he is also willing to teach you what you don't understand. He doesn't discuss much a lot in class. I would've liked it better if he had posted a recorded lecture or something. But overall a pretty great teacher.
Hybrid Class. I pretty much self-thought myself. Exams were pretty tough. He has an interesting grading system where he lists us all and takes percentiles. Like top 10% gets an A, next 5% gets an A-, and so on. Idk how much my grades will get me atm, that's the downside
I can't believe that anyone thought this class was hard?? I NEVER went to class ever. I only went to the midterm and final and I got a B+. I thought this class was super easy and I would definitely take hilmer again.
Hybrid Class. I like the way he teaches, except you have to be a very motivated and independent learner. But I really like him. I've never had a professor who curves so this is scary, hopefully I'll do well.
Hardish class. Might be better to not to to class and learn at home since in class he QUICKLY goes over the power points UNLESS its a review day. Review days are helpful. Weird curve, since it depends on other students grade "rank".
Professor Hilmer is an amazing economics professor! If you really want to learn about and understand public finance then he is your guy! There are 2 exams and 1 group project (easy presentation). Exams are completely off of his lectures but the lectures where so interesting. If you are an econ major take this class! you will learn so much!
3 Midterms and a final. Homework is unrelated to to the tests for the majority of questions. Essentially a self taught class with zero audio lecture aid. Never heard the professor speak once. Worst class i have ever taken at SDSU. Just stay away.
Professor Hilmer is an amazing professor though he is an visiting summer Professor in UCSD. His lecture is really helpful for the exam. What we had in the exam is what he taught in class(example+theory). So go to his lecture will not only help u do well in the exam, but also help you understand the economic theory.
Here's the basic run-down: 3 midterms and optional final depending on how you did on those midterms. He's helpful but you have to seek help on your own time. Goes way too fast and expects you to know everything. Study the material he puts on blackboard. Got D+ on all three midterms and passed with a C+
I learned nothing from Professor Hilmer. He goes through the slides so fast and draws charts on the whiteboard that are all over the place. I had to learn everything on my own I got nothing from his lectures so I eventually stopped going, and I'm someone whose a stickler to going to every class.
Hilmer has 3 Midterms and an optional final. There are no clicker points so you do not have to go to class. His lectures are confusing because he goes through the slides pretty fast. There is help if you need it, but I had to teach myself a lot of the material.
Dude's teaching methods are not the business. I went to 2-3 lectures and they didn't help, although he doesn't use clickers do attendance wasn't required. The class is basically self-taught--I skipped the first midterm, got a 34 on the next, 60 on the one after, and studied my ass off for the final. Got a solid C, which was satisfying enough.
He's completely rude and unhelpful. Doesn't show up to office hours and ignored all of my emails. Lectures make no sense. If you can take this class with another professor, do. If you have to take it with him... well, you'd better pray.
The class itself is easy however you pretty much have to teach yourself & read the book if you want to pass. He goes way too fast in lectures & he gets disorganized with the graphs etc that it would get a bit confusing. Definitely go to lectures though and sit up front! 3 midterms, the final is optional if you're content with your midterm avg.
He is one of the worst professors I have ever had. I put a lot of time and effort into the class and still struggled
Took this class last semester, it is a lot of reading but if you read you will pass. I ended up with a B+ solely because i got lazy near the end of the semester and didn't feel like reading. The concepts are straight out of the book i really don't understand why people think this class is difficult, just read people and you will for sure pass!
This class was easy, he is very helpful in office hours! I went once every other week. He cares about students that care about his class. Homework can be founded online, easy 100% less than 15 mins to complete. But you have to read the book. Ended up with an A. people complain because they don't read. It's college, not suppose to be easy lol
This class was easy, he is very helpful in office hours! I went once every other week. He cares about students that care about his class. Homework can be founded online, easy 100% less than 15 mins to complete. But you have to read the book. Ended up with an A. You must read in order to receive a B and above
He doesn't really teach, you have to read the entire book on your own to learn about the economy. He takes the first 40 minutes of class to talk about the news, don't even go to class it doesn't matter. And test are really hard, but he curves at the end.
This class made me want others to fail so I hated it. The guy is smart but he isn't very helpful.
He and Grossbard are bad professors for econ. Hates it when students email him about questions on the course. Is condescending and rude. Why be a professor if you're not going to help students in subjects they find difficult? You have to teach yourself. Tests are somewhat difficult, he loves graphs use those!
If you have the learning attitude; he is there to help. Relates theory with real life; so not all boring stat stuff, but you do need to read and do homework to understand the concepts. You will learn some good analyticalresearch skills if that's what you are after. Not an easy A, but its not impossible to get. Walks thru excel examples in class.
Enjoyed this class on the whole, Professor relates economics to current affairs and the world, which makes it relevant. The content of this course is actually pretty useful and if you end up working with data you will probably use a technique you learned here. Midterm was tough, final was ok and for the two data projects, choose your data early!
This class was pretty hard but he curves by like 2 letter grades, so a C A. In my opinion Professor Hilmer is not very approachable, kind of makes you feel dumb if you ask a question. Lecture was a little unorganized, all over the place and hard to follow. The material itself is pretty hard so if you can I recommend taking it with someone else.
Tests are very hard. His lectures are not clear. He often goes back and forth between points making the class lost in his lecture. It isn't even worth it to go to class, you'd be better off just reading the book.
Honestly probably one of the worse professors if you actually care about understanding economics. Doesn't really know how to get his ideas across. I stopped going to his lectures cause it was pointless and just read the book instead. He does drop your 3 lowest homeworks though and you can miss one test so that's cool. Avoid him at all costs
I understood nearly nothing that he attempted to teach us and learned everything on my own or from his wonderful TA. Whatever you do not take this class !!! If Econ101 is full in every other section, wait another semester and try again before signing up for this class. If you have no other options at least the curve is amazing.
Lectures are dry and are all over the place. I eventually stopped going to class because I learned more reading the textbook and going over slides more carefully. Claims to dislike going off PowerPoint so he goes through them quickly. Review homework and go to office hours if you really need the help. He is a bit intimidating and can be belittling.
He's not very helpful and from everyone that I spoke to, he does not respond to emails. His lectures are not helpful at all. You think because this is a hybrid class there would be supplemental materials or lectures online, but no, just mostly homework. Be careful taking this class. If you expect an A, you better work for it.
I thought the classes weren't really helpful. Too many people in the room so he only goes through the slides and briefly explains the context. I didn't go to classes, just read the textbook on my own and did the homework every week. There are three midterms and an optional final. Good class if you like to study and learn on your own.
Terrible experience and introduction to economics. Class was a hybrid and met once a week but there wasn't online material except for the textbook. You do NOT want to take the final. Try to find a different proff with a smaller class.
Horrible experience. He goes through the lecture slides so fast that it's impossible to take notes. At the end of class he clicks through some practice problems but doesn't even say what the answer is because "you should know this". Not helpful at all. You learn more from the textbook than from him. Avoid him at all costs.
Professor Hilmer is a indeed nice teacher. YOU really learn something from his class! Taking a good attitude from the beginning and you won't go through a hard time later. Attend your class!! The content are not that hard. Remember to do all the homework because these are quite useful in testing your knowledge!!
Honestly, I used his lecture as more of a review from what I learned by reading the textbook. He goes pretty fast through his slides, but if you prepare beforehand it will be fairly easy. Midterms/final are very similar to the practice exams he gives so look over those. Just don't slack off and you'll be fine with him as a prof.
Read the textbook! His lectures were not very helpful but I survived by taking notes on the textbook and using the textbook's website's study features.
Hard to pass and he never teach clearly
this class is not too bad if you learn really well independently. I did not learn one thing from him. All my learning came from the book and from tutors. His office aids are more helpful than he is..
Absolute worst professor. He will boast on the first day of class about how horrible his ratings are with an evil smirk as if he knows he is protected by his tenure status. I got an A because there was a row of us who copied during every exam while he sits on his phone watching ESPN. This guy hates teaching with a passion. Take at your own risk.
Easier than his wife. Understand lectures and read the book and you will be good.
Honestly one of the worst teachers ever. He is such an ass and you never learn anything from him. If you ask a question he just looks down on you and makes you feel like an idiot. Do not take him if you have a choice. Final is optional but previous tests are soooo hard I am just glad I made it through the class.
He understands econ but lectures are confusing and he doesn't make things easy. Paying attention to his lectures is hard. He curves a lot. If you take this class, be prepared to teach yourself by reading the textbook and going to the A+ reviews. Most points come from midterms, which are hard. He curves a lot though.
The worst professor I've had during my time at SDSU. Honestly did not learn a thing in this class. He's super condescending and makes you feel like an idiot for asking questions. The tests are super hard and he doesn't prepare you.
Such a hard class. He clearly understands economics but be ready to teach yourself the material. A+ reviews and the curve at the end of the semester saved my life. Curve brought my D+ to a B-, so in a way he makes up for his students' lack of understanding. Make sure you do good on the homework.
Hybrid class. Must purchase the book and Aplia. Weekly online home-works. Tests were really hard C average. I recommend going to every office hours he has. Really nice guy once you get to know him, curves the test. There's 3 midterms and a final, allows you to miss one test. Make sure you take ALL 3 midterms, because the final is really hard.
Hilmer is the WORST professor I have ever had. When I needed help he was not at his office hours, nor would he even seen me when I asked. His grading system is untrustworthy and in order to pass you HAVE to do good on the exams (which are impossible by the way). Stay very far away.
I honestly did not learn much from him, he only uses the exams for your grades and homework is basically nothing in your grade. The Aplia site does not really have anything to do with what he tests on, it's more busy work. You can tell he hates going to class just as much as his students do. Do the readings, because his lectures are him reading.
He doesn't care if students come to his class. 20% of the final grades are HW's. The Hw's are easy. However, his test are really tricky and the multiple choice answers are really simpler. Normally if He hand a band of grades I would take a B but because he compares you to the class I got an A so i liked his grading style. Final isn't mandatory.
Honestly one of the worst classes I've taken. On top of Hilmer being a terrible teacher, he also does nothing to help you succeed. Unless economics makes sense to you, then good luck. Only good thing is his curve is pretty big
Worst professor I've had at SDSU. Tried to get help at OH and he was very rude and condescending to me. His TA didn't even speak english. He obviously would rather be doing anything else than helping students pass. I managed to pass miraculously from the curve. I honestly can say I did not learn anything from this professor.
Literyno homwork and not required go to class. But I went to every single class still get a not equal my working grade. Not easy on exams, missing a point and will not give you the question right. Teaching skill is too casual with some mistakes find out by students. And say " you guys get my point". If you have other choice for class, go for them.
There are 3 midterms and a final . The final is optional! Go to class and write down the example problems . Good teacher but hard tests !
Currently retaking his econ 101 online this summer. The tests are MUCH easier online and you don't have to see him in person which is amazing considering what an awful person/teacher he is. TAKE ONLINE, STAY AWAY FROM HIS REGULAR ECON 101! the only downside is there's a good amount of HW because the course is accelerated. By far, worst teacher ever
This class was so hard! Be prepared to teach yourself and go to TAs for help. Lectures are not organized or helpful bc he moves too fast. Tests are tricky and way harder than the practice tests. You have to work for your grade, but the curve at the end is helpful.
Go to all his lectures, listen and take notes, it'll really help. He writes all his notes up on the whiteboard so it definitely helps to to pay attention. Throughout the semester he gives practices problems and posts the old midterm and final on BB. Tests are curved. And there is one group presentation.
Hilmer is not a very good professor. You need to go to lecture to understand the material but his lectures are very bland with very little content. There are huge curves due to so many people failing these test. The only good thing is the homework and curves that bring your grade up but the professor is horrible.
He doesn;t care about his students, very condescending and makes tests ridiculously hard. His lectures are all posted online, his "lectures" consist of him reading through power point material and then hastily "explaining" it. WORST CHOICE! AVOID AT ALL COSTS ESPECIALLY IF YOU ARE A FRESHMAN.
Yes he's hard and bland at teaching but he curves A LOT. The midterms are somewhat hard but you can pass them with good studying. This class you basically teach yourself, so read all the chapters and take good notes. 3 midterms and optional final. Just try and you can pass.
Hilmer couldn't have made it more apparent that he doesn't care about this class. There is no book so its near impossible to study outside of class, and his lectures are unstructured and lazy. No course curriculum on the syllabus. Grades curved to class average. Class teaches very little about econ. Hands down the worst economics class I've taken.
No structure to his lecture, and absolutely no resources online. His blackboard contains of a practice final, practice midterm, and syllabus. There is no textbook, and no outline of learning objectives. If you are not fantastic at taking notes and learning in class you will not have a good time in this class. Studying is a nightmare w/o resources
Taking Hilmer was one of the worst experiences I had during fall semester. His tests were hard and his lectures were terrible to deal with. I took the hybrid course, which may have been a bad idea, the online day just didn't exist and the meeting was terrible, he kept reading all the time. Last days I just skipped class. Get ready to teach yourself
all I have to say for this class is LOL. Literally any other instructor would make econ more interesting. Such a high curve bc everyone fails! After the 3rd midterm, if you had an 86.6% in the class, you got an A. PLEASE AVOID HIM! Please take another class or instructor.
Literally the worst lecturer at SDSU. His lectures were boring & didn't make any sense, plus he taught fast which didn't help. I went to A+ & still failed the test. He curves bc everyone does bad on his exams. Know how to do the math problems & go over the HW & READ THE TEXTBOOK, & form a study group bc you are gonna have to teach yourself
Super difficult class for me, he taught super fast and mostly read the book. There's homework every week and 3 midterms and an optional final. He curves the class which boosted me a little bit.
Okay, where to begin, worst prof. at SDSU. He has a very bias opinion on everything and make sure it's known. His lectures are nearly impossible to understand as this course met only on Tuesday and the rest was done online. Since his lectures did NOT make any sense, I stopped going and had to completely teach myself doing 4 to 7 hours of homework.
His lectures are just him reading over his powerpoint slides and reviewing what the book already teaches us. His grade is based on homework, 3 midterms, and an optional final. I mainly had to teach everything to myself because his lectures didn't do much for me.
lectures were unhelpful so i stopped going and just did his study guides to study for his tests. technically got a B+ but his system of assigning grades gave me an A. he assigns grades by rank (top 3% of his class gets A's, next 10% A-, etc) which helped in my case but if youre the bottom 30-or-so percent you won't pass so definitely keep in mind
Even if you spend hours studying, Hilmers exams set you up to fail. Most of the content on exams is nothing like the "past" exams. He tells you they will be similar but they aren't. He thinks his teaching style of reading off powerpoint slides is "teaching". Keep in mind there is very little interaction: he does the talking and you stay quiet.
This was the worst class ever. I took Econ 101 online with him and your entire grade is basically 3 tests. you only get a minute per question and he does not post lectures! I retook Econ with Pradalopez and I have an A because she actually teaches. 0/10 recommend. He also flaunts the amount of kids that fail his class as if its a good thing.
this class is literally based on how you teach yourself. his lectures are lackluster and I honestly learned more from teaching myself with youtube videos then I did in his lectures. The entire class is basically based on 3 tests. Also, he brags about how many students fail or don't do well in his course but its because of his teaching...
I took the summer online course. He did not teach a single thing. Everything I learned, I learned from reading the textbook. The few emails he sent made him seem very unapproachable, didn't have specific office hours, I sent him an email once and he never replied. Save yourself and take this class with literally any other professor.
I never spoke to the man or saw what he looked like. Class was completely asynchronous. All materials were posted since the first day of instruction. Make sure to stay on top of assignment due dates! 3 midterms and a final. Final is optional if you take the 3 midterms and are satisfied with your current grade. You basically learn from the textbook.
Simply put, the worst professor I have ever had. The class is made up of 3 assignments (midterm, research paper, and a final) and the professor gives no instruction for anything. On 9/8/21 he sent an announcement that said the midterm will be chapters 1-6 on 11/4, we never heard anything from him again. Never even posted all the chapter materials.
Very terrible, and very distant professor. Does not reply back to students, and sends an announcement only when it's convenient for him. Grade is based on three heavy assignments - a midterm, research paper, and final. He might be better in person, but do not take him if it is online. Unless you have a good study group, you will regret it.
Chill class, relatively easy to plan for and navigate through. However, he does not respond to email but grades are curved. Weekly homework deadlines.
3 midterms w/ final optional if you took all three midterms and liked your grade; homework weekly (2 chapters sometimes); posted lecture videos; very distant and only reached out when tests were coming up; ok professor and class to take if you have taken econ before in HS
The homework is styled differently than the exam questions. He ranks each student so some of my classmates found themselves with lower scores than they thought they were gonna get based on their grades (for example, they had a 75% based off of homework and exams but were given a letter grade of a D+). He does not accept late work or moving exams.
Dr. Hilmer is very clear in his videos and uses great examples in the lectures. It was online and I, unexpectedly, learned well in his class. He offers a lot of Q&A guides but you need learn the topics well, mostly - do the work. The tests are problems creatively reworded, careful. The cool thing is, if you do good all year, the final is optional.
He is a very understanding professor, I really enjoyed taking his class, however, it is very important to fully understand the criteria for tests.
I never got to meet Professor Hilmer, his online class was pretty easy but difficult at the same time. Homework was graded automatically because it was an online website, but it was also difficult to comprehend or really understand it. However, it is manageable.
All Online, and the exams will have info that is not clear in the lecture slides, so when you are taking notes, look for things that don't have definitions and find them yourselves. Feels very much like you have to teach the subject yourself.
Hilmer isn't a difficult professor, if anything the class can just be a bit difficult. The homework can be a lot if he assigns 2 chapters in 1 week. Besides homework, your grade is mostly 3 midterms and an optional final. There is no extra credit. Make sure to review the study guides he provides for exams because he reuses a lot of questions.
Want to contact him? Good luck not happening. Class is easy, just make sure you look at your due dates. Talking to the professor is non existent, you will not be able to contact him under any means at all, good luck with that.
Weird class to take online b/c I literally looked up over half the homework and tests. The other half you had to understand. I rarely used the textbook, but it's good for studying. The final is optional if you're happy with your grade beforehand. Chat GPT is sometimes useful sometimes not, go to the quizlets or quroa. All tests are multiple choice.
The class itself is not hard but you don't really know your grade until the end and the homeworks do not raise your grade by much. Was using the what-if feature on canvas and thought I had a higher grade but he really just takes the average of all the hws as one grade. Tried to email him asking to look at our midterms to study for final and said no
Class was completely online and no zoom meeting. This class is just a teach-yourself class and its very easy.
homework is once a week and worth a good amount. 3 midterms and 1 final all online. material is pretty easy to understand, i averaged a B- on the tests and passed with an A-
This professor does not answer to his own emails. I sent him 4 emails all semester and only replied once with a rude tone. Never taking him again if he doesn't change his attitude. 401 is an easy class, take your notes and study hard as he only grades by two tests and a paper.
Lectures weren't too helpful but the book and homework made the mid terms pretty easy. Provided old mid term questions with answers that helped too. Don't have to take final if you're ok with grade after the 3 mid terms.
Professor Hilmer's ECON101 class is manageable, with helpful resources like study guides and online homework. Unstuckstudy AI can be a useful supplement alongside the textbook. Exams are mainly multiple choice, so reviewing practice questions is key to success.
This is probably the worst professor I've had so far as an SDSU student. He could care less about what happens in your life when it comes to missing assignments, turning in late work, or asking for a retake. Also, he automatically fails you if you miss more than two assignments, NO QUESTIONS ASKED.
Idk what the other reviews are saying about a hard or bad class. Lots of time to do the homework and the exams are easy and straightforward. If you're not late for the assignments its a guaranteed A.
Unclear guidance, removed the classes midterm grade after accusing the class of cheating, didnt provide the lectures for the 2nd half of the course because he didnt think it was worth his time since SDSU has gone away with fully online ECON courses. Didnt give feedback on a paper that was worth 30% of our grade. Only 3 assignments weighed heavy
Awesome guy who knows his material. His lectures were quite helpful for you to understand the coursework, and never felt boring. He's quite interactive in class, but has a tendency to go off topic sometimes. Class felt a bit disorganized at times though - only downside tbh. Otherwise, solid professor if you want strong knowledge for microeconomics.
There are a lot of last minute changes. He changed the syllabus within a week of finals and decided to take the homework out, the final was worth 60 percent of the grade. Unfortunately never replied to a single email that was sent to him during the semester. I will avoid taking him in the future.
You have to show up to lectures (even though they're boring) for the full content because his powerpoints are usually skipped over. The class was history of economic thought but he mostly talked about macroeconomics. He feels very unprepared and not in tune with the topics at all.
The grade is based on only three things: midterm exam, essay, and final. The midterm and final are multiple choice but it's all material from class. He lets you have a big flashcard cheat sheet but you have to get it the week before in class.
