unique individual, even strange...but I learned to write. I reccomend him.

Professor Jaynes is the consummate, absent minded, unimpressed, unabashed intellectual. He taught me Voltaire and that's a feat in itself. A lover of life, and shows in his teaching.
I was a decent writer before; now I'm a much better one. It's easy to show up for class when your prof looks as *&^%$%^ hot as Jaynesie! It also helps that he has that mind of his...I always sat on the front row..I hope you remember me...I'll be around!!!! :)
Mr. Jaynes is arrogant. As a senior used to demanding, tenured profs,I was unconvinced a twenty-something in blue jeans could do the job.Turns out, he's very sharp. My only complaint is the few girls who kept openly hitting on him allsemester-annoying Perhaps that's a danger of teaching "streetcar"?
Good professor. Interesting speaker.
I'm not a fan.
All over the place. Great entertainer...so/so teacher.

The guy is great.. and he's young so you feel a certain bond with him when he teaches.. He's a funny guy and a great professor.
This guy's pretty cool. Young, but knows what he's doing. And he does what he wants, like dressing comfortably and dismissing things if the class does really seem into it. Plus, very open to discussion about practically anything - even hot-button topics. Quite interesting.
he is one of the best and he always seemed to relay the message or ideas of the book so you could understand it. the quizes that he gave out was only to make sure that you read. even if you didnt have time to go over all the chapters assgined there was nothing that sparknotes couldnt help you out on. but over all he was very good at helping you und
This is one teacher that everyone needs to take! His quizzes aren't hard as long as your familiar with the material (sparknotes). He's one of those teachers who is less interested in the grade than what is learned. A definite must.
Good teacher who happens to be young and HOT. Will listen to personal problems. I approached him with several problems over the sem. and he was always understanding.
class was ok. not great. he tries hard but doesn't seem to have a lot of experience. just a regular looking guy at best. small and not impressive.
AWESOME TEACHER!
interesting, intriguing, involved, i candy
He is a great teacher, very cool. He loves discussion and is willing to work with you and help you with whatever. He is a fair grader, you do the work, your grade shows it.He is intriguing and very optimistic and brings a sense of mystery to the class.
Great teacher. Doing this class in the summer wasn't easy, but it goes by quickly, and he's always willing to meet with you about anything. ...just go to class and do well on the quizzes
Stunts included standing on tables, ranting and screaming in the hallway, putting students on the spot, throwing books out window, talking about****, god, art, and the "chains of prepackaged society", whatever that is. out of control and...fun. in some crazy way, he ended up making sense. Hated him at first, but now i am a groupie ;) Take Jaynes!
Completely inappropriate and completely effective! Professor J is the rock star of this school. I hope everybody ReCogniZes. u will love him or hate him. there's no space in between. He broke stuff in the classroom. 2 cool!
kinda weird, and basically only talks about racial or sexual oppression...but ok
He is absolutely psycho. I definitely will not ever take him again, but I must admit that he does have a strange way of holding your attention. I just don't feel like the class was at all about English. It was more of just random conversations and things that he is very pasionate about.
great teacher! knows how to make a point. very willing to help. made class interesting. i would take him again.

It took me three semesters to finally get in his class. He is VERY much in demand, and I now see the hype is justified x 10. I was offended and challenged. I heard he is one of those "culty" types, with student fans all over. I was curious and not expecting what I got. I'm now a Jaynesian!!!!
Professor Jaynes breaks all the molds. He challenges everything and makes you want to challenge everything,,,even him. He's a free spirit, his own person, and he is very into what he does. WOnderful experience. Only a little psychotic (in the best sense, though!)
I am not a English person at all...but his class was EXTREMELY fun. He made you look at things diffferently. We watched family guy one time bc it went with his lesson! You will be asked to write and talk about subjects that might make you feel uncomfortable. considering i am very Conservative but it is college so come out of your box a little.
Professor Jaynes is amazing! He has high expectations for all of his students. Must know the material to pass! As far as grading...do your work, pay attention in class, take REALLY good notes and you will make an "A". Also, go to his office and participate as much as you can. He notices these things and it will factor into your final grade.
Unstable. Hate him.
A WHIRLWIND..A FORCE OF NATURE...Take him!!!!!!!!!!!
Makes it very clear what he wants on all assignments and as long as you follow it you will make a good grade Only 4 essays that can be kinda hard to write but they're only 3% of your grade with a final portfolio the rest of your grade you can revise your papers as much as you want to get the grade you want on your final portfolio
He is a relatively easy teacher as long as you make the effort. He thinks outside the norm, which makes unusal & interesting discussions. I would recommend taking his class.
Great teacher, willing to work with a few big deal absences. Funny - makes class entertaining even while you learn. Sarcastic, but makes the students think. We even watched TV in class (for a purpose).
Professor Jaynes is the best teacher. He is willing to help everybody individually if you want his help. Also, don't let his youth fool you because he is a very intelligent person. If you work hard, you will be guranteed an A. Don't just take my word for it; look at all of these reviews. So my advice to you is TAKE HIM or you will regret it!!!!!!!!
Jaynes, Marry Me? He is one of my favorite prof of all time. He thinks outside the box and makes his students want to explore the world in a different light. English is easy for me, but his class was pretty easy too. He's funny as all get out and keeps things interesting. He also allows rewrites for all essays! I am going to take him again!
i had him for western humanities and he made the material even more interesting. he's not easily impressed (actually an attribute for a professor) and can be short at times, but he's engaging and has a wonderful off-beat sense of humor. i had a massive crush on him by semester's end. definately. eesh...
AWESOME. Very intersting. Very helpful. Take him.
Often misunderstood and truly positive force! I will be in his Army when he leads the rebellion!!!!
mmm...but in all seriousness, he is incredible. he makes you learn even when you halfass the reading. he is laid back, but really wants you to succeed. he doesnt breathe down your neck, but he hates to see people slack off a lot. his discussions are memorable and his humor is infectious. PLEASE TAKE HIM if you don't get offended easily :)
DO NOT TAKE HIM! He is extremely rude. All classes are spent talking about controversial topics just to make people mad. Papers are not graded fairly and he shows a lot of favoritism. He is very helpful if you want to rewrite your papers 100's of times just to get a C.
I made an A but worked HARD for it. Our class started w/ 26 students & ended w/ 13! He is very interesting on a personal level -- would love to hang out with him. Tests are VERY though, take tons of notes! Great lecturer--makes class discussion fun & interesting. Used to be a sky diving instructor. The danger and mystery makes him sort of hot!
Made me feel like my life was pointless. he seems to be the type to kick down doors. Good teacher, interesting classes. I liked him, but I'm not sure why. Take him for a different view on the world.
I will follow where he leads!
He is a genuinely sweet man. If you make it obvious that you want to do well, he will help you. He does not like laziness and loves controversy. He is kind and wants you to do well, but he's not going to think for you. Take him!!
He is a awesome teacher, probably one of the best i ever had. He holds you attention and makes you actually want to go to class. He cares alot about you passing and is willing to help you. He always is open to talk to after class and will let you come by during office hours. He has made me a better writer and i plan to take him again if i can.
Jaynes is one of my all time favorite teachers! His thinking is always new and interesting. He keeps your attention throught the lectures and his homework is well thought out and makes you think about the subject. His humor is witty. He is very willing to help you with whatever you need. Grading is fair. Take every class he teaches!!
Mr. Jaynes is a great teacher to take, even though he will make you work it is worth it. I started the class with D's and ended the class with middle B's. He will help you out even out of his arranged times. Great teacher
Awesome teacher. Highly recommend him. Very helpful. Approachable. You will most likely look forward to his class. Fun.
VERY Good Teacher for both values in 20cent am fiction and Humanities I, take him and you'll be interested the whole time. If you're a fair paper writer you'll be fine. But mainly graded on papers not really a test guy. Very good, interesting and nice guy
This guy is made of purple neutrons and wears extra special clothes. He's possibly extra terrestrial; great teacher!
Take him he is fun.
Your eyes will want to fall out for all the reading. He digs conflict (the self-satisfied smirk says it all). He'll work your butt off and make you love it. Try, if you can, to ignore the weirdness of the first few classes. You do get used to it and he does eventually settle down. Rolls kinda strangely, but I promise, you'll love the class!

AWESOME teacher! Highly recommend him. He makes everything really interesting and cares a lot about what he does. Take him if you get the opportunity.
Prof. Jaynes is a great, although crazy, guy, but his craziness is just for humor purposes. His class, just like all the other Humanities classes is a lot of reading, but Jaynes values honesty, and will not get angry if you say you didn't read. Highly recommend taking him!
Great Teacher! He makes the class really entertaining most days. He is willing to help you anyway possible, but he is not going to give you an easy gade. First test is easy, the next two will make you think. Gives plenty of extra credit opportuinites. I would love to take him again. Go to class!!
I took Jaynes for both 113 and 300. The first few days we'll come off as a jerk and claim to only care about himself but as the class continues you'll figure out it's the exact opposite. He is extremely helpful and believes what he is doing is important. He assigns a couple big papers but they're manageable and he grades fair.
m. jaynes was great to have as a teacher. very intelligent and funny. take anything you can from him.
Jaynes is an interesting person that leaves a mystique about himself. He encourages all types of thinking. On the flip side, for every book read, you must write the same formatted paper which becomes boring. He is very picky about the reader responses and students rarely receive an A. Worth taking, but do not expect an A in the class.
I have taken as many classes by him as I could. His classes are what college is all about. If you want to sleep and skip class, or get an easy A, don't be in college. If you want to discover more about yourself than you ever have, take his class and I swear you'll love him. Plus he is hilarious and extremely intelligent.
Mr. Jaynes is hilarious. He's got a pretty dark sense of humor, and he is really quite impossible to offend. He holds his writers to a pretty high standard, but he doesn't like all writing styles, so watch out. Talk A LOT. Participation is pretty big in that class. Awesome guy, makes the class super fun.
His class was a waste of time and money. I, along with others, went into his class excited about the material. He does not have the ability to control his own classroom. There were 3 "know it all" type people who talked every class for the entire class. He does not grade fairly. I will be graduating in May...I regret taking this class.
It is my belief that a professor should dress professionally. Jaynes talks about how much money professors' make(he said they get paid a lot) so he ought to be able to buy more than blue jeans and a t shirt.
horrible teacher DO NOT take him!!!! he is the most mototoned teacher and grades unfairly!
One of the best classes I have taken at UTC. Jaynes makes the class interesting, but warns students right from the beginning that he just doesn't really care to get to know them. no tests, no final exam. grade is only based on 2page papers for each book you read. offers extra credit as well. highly recommend
Professor Jaynes was very helpful, but I did not care for his grading style. It seemed as though he had no rubric and that your papers received whatever grade happened to come to his mind. He was very open-minded when you questioned your grade though. Class discussion topics were somewhat strange, but all in all he was a good instructor.
Jaynes keeps you interested. There is never a boring day in that class. It is very challenging to get a good grade on a reader response, unfortunately. He is a very picky grader, but he makes you think.
i always looked forward to his class!!! hardly any grades, hard to understand why you got the grade you got, but i still loved him!
Jaynes keeps the class interesting/amusing. He's actually interested in his student's opinion and is not afraid to be up front and honest. He's not going to be your Facebook buddy or anything, but he does care about his students and wants them to succeed in future English classes.
Adolescent Lit is the second class I've taken with this professor, and once again, I really enjoyed his class. He has a very unique teaching style, gets off topic a lot, and is somewhat inconsistent on grading, but overall is a great professor. This class required 2 major projects, but was definitely manageable. Made an A with minimal effort
I totally love this guy. His classes were the highlight of my week and he is SO interesting. Take him if you can, its worth it
Brilliant teacher. Style seems to be all over the place until you realize that he's modeling various teaching styles that you'll learn in EDUC 4500. Grading style is....different. Little or no feedback (frustrating), but funny and fun to poke politically. I bet he'd be a blast to drink with.
I just finished his Intro to Animal Rights class and I absolutely loved it. Dr. Jaynes' teaching style is one that I'm fairly familiar with from high school. It's more of a straight-forward, discussion led style. My grade was based on journal entries (1-2 pages) and attendance, but we only met once a week for 50 minutes, so it wasn't a problem.
Jaynes is a great teacher, because he actually knows what he's talking about. He's not spewing crap in the air like some of the other professors that I've had at UTC. He really knows his stuff. Don't take him for an easy A, take him for the wealth of knowledge you're going to get. He's one of my favorite professors at this college.
He doesn't give you the grade, you freaking earn it. Don't take him for a fluff class, but take him. He's extremely intelligent and he's hysterically funny. Great professor.
Love his teaching style, he's such a fun professor. He makes any class so much more enjoyable. He is not an easy A. But you will LEARN in his class.
BEST TEACHER ever. He is makes the work fun. He does not talk about his family or his life. He brings the books to life. GREAT!!!
Odd person. Good teacher.
Took him for The Ethics of Star Trek class. He's a great man who knows what he is talking about. You CAN fail this class so don't take him thinking it will be easy. He has a great sense of humor and enjoys talking to his students. He's extremely easy to get along with. I definitely recommend taking one of his classes!
Jaynes, at first, came across as cold and uncaring. This is not true! He genuinely cares about his students. Don't be put off by his weird sense of humor, embrace it! Course work was not bad. A 1-2 page reader response (some of them were really fun!) for each book you read and a group teaching project. The class was so interesting. Take him!
This is a great class and you have the opportunity to learn alot about history and mythology. If you do not show up you will fail, however, you can miss classes. If you read everything you are supposed to you will pass all the quizzes the one multiple choice test and the three essay tests with flying colors. On the essay tests be original.
At first he came off a bit sarcastic and bitter and I didn't know what to think. I thought of myself as a good writer, until he flunked all my papers. However, I think he was playing a weird mind game and just wanted me to improve to my full potential. It's definitely a love/hate relationship, but he improved my writing skills tremendously!!
Jaynes was very intimidating at first, but I actually really enjoyed his class! The whole class everyday was open discussion. He is hilarious and makes the class very enjoyable. Read the books, participate in class, and spend some time on your reader responses and you will do fine.
A really great teacher! I actually enjoy going to the class and would not want to miss it!
I am an A student and I really struggled in Jaynes' Comp 2 class. He is a ridiculously tough grader. If you struggle with writing papers, I would recommend another professor. The class is manageable, but more stress than a Comp 2 class is worth. I made C's on just about every paper. Very strange person, too.
He is a great English teacher. He is clear about his assignments, and gives multiple chances to revise papers. Although he is a tough grader, it really helps improve your writing by the end of the semester.
I LOVE LOVE LOVED Jaynes. By far the most interesting and hilarious professor I have ever had. So sarcastic and just pure comedy. If your writing sucks he'll tell you AND help improve it. I grew tremendously as a writer. Go to his office hours, he's great one on one and literally tells you EXACTLY what you should do. He is great, take the class!!
Professor Jaynes is by far the best teacher I've ever had. He is HILARIOUS!!! His personality is just the best. He is really smart and insightful. Everything he says is just blows me away. I feel like I'm benefit by simply being in his presence. He helped me find direction in mind life. Amazing guy.
Jaynes is the best professor you will ever have. He is so funny and makes class entertaining. The only reason I gave him a 2 on easiness is because he makes you work for your grade. Don't expect an easy A. But if you want to learn how to become a better writer, take him. You will not regret it.
Mr. Jaynes is probably one of my favorite professors at UTC. He is very smart and absolutely hilarious! I looked forward to coming to class. He is very willing to help you in any way to get the grade you deserve. Will definitely recommend taking him.
A challenge but he makes you want to put in the effort. He is willing to help if you ask for it but be ready to do the readings
This guy is the crème de la crème. He is the gem of this University. Makes me wonder why he isn't at Harvard or Yale, because he just makes every other teacher at this school look bad. Inspirational doesn't even begin to describe it. Funny, charismatic, just an all around winner. Take him, or else you'll be missing out on one of UTC's finest
Best professor I've ever had. He makes you work hard but will help you with everything you need to get an A. I looked forward to class and he is absolutely hilarious. Highly recommend.
This is one of UTC's best professors. His teaching style, candor, and humor kept me coming to class even though I'm not a morning person.
He was a good professor. I enjoyed everyday of this clsss
Jaynes is truly one of my favorite professors I have ever had. I would recommend him to anyone in the English or Women's Studies department. His sense of humor is great and he is also brilliant. He makes his expectations pretty clear from the beginning, so if you are a good student you can definitely do great in his class.
This professor is AMAZING. I took him for Comp 1 and am taking him again in the Spring for Comp 2. He gives you the opportunity to do as many revisions as you want, and he has a great teaching style. It's an easy A as long as you put in the effort.
Dr. Jaynes is my favorite teacher thus far! He is understanding and always willing to help students out. He allows revisions on essays you write, which is awesome because it allows you to continue to make changes to papers until you earn the grade you want. His feed back is very helpful when writing revisions!! Quizzes are easy 100s. TAKE HIM!
Professor Jaynes was great. I am not a good writer and he helped me improve on that so much. On every paper you write, you get as many revisions you want until you are happy with your grade! He is very easy going and laid back. If you're looking for an A, he can help you get that easily if you work with him on your papers and show effort.
I went to him every day for help because i wasnt seeming to understand what he wanted. He would give me feedback and suggest changes and would let me know my assignment was "A or B worthy". he wouldnt even crack me a 50 on the final assignments so i had to drop the class.
DO NOT TAKE PROF JAYNES. You will in no way get an A I don't know one person that did last semester or any of my friends in his class this semester.
I thought this class would be easy, however, it wasn't. He is so funny. He made me laugh everyday and is willing to help. He offers to grade your papers before the actual due date and give feedback on what you should change. He has made me a better writer in multiple ways and I am so glad that I took this class because I learned so much.
I absolutely loved this class! Professor Jaynes really cares about the success of his students. He is very clear with what he wants, he is always accessible outside of class, he gets grades back to you faster than any other professor I've had. He is also really funny. Most of the essays are challenging, but he will help you and you can revise later
Easily the best teacher I've had so far. It's a hybrid class so if you don't learn well online, it is risky. I wasn't, but he helps you so much. You write three papers and you're given an opportunity to revise every time. He truly wants you to succeed and he tells the real world like it is. I'm taking him again next semester.
Dr. Jaynes is super cool and leaves the class open for you to learn on your own terms. Do the readings and show up to class and show a genuine interest in the content. He's great.
Dr Jaynes is such an amazing Professor and hes super funny as well. Hes very accessible outside of class as well and is more than willing to help out his students in office hours
Professor Jaynes was one of my best professors for my first semester of college. He was very helpful and want to ensure my success in his class. In college it is hard to find a personable professor who looks at you more then just being a student in a school of thousands. If you take his class and do the revisions allowed you will succeed.
The class I took was Popular Fiction: Horror. He was a great professor with a fun personality. One problem was that we had two papers, each worth 25% of our grade. The papers were short (500 words), but worth so much. And be ready to read. I was expected to read Dracula in 2 weeks and I am Legend in one. Easy class for lit, but very time consuming.
Jaynes is most certainly a character, but he is a good professor and understanding at that. During quarantine, he messages students asking how they are doing and responds to discussions and papers in a well manner. He is a tough grader, but it is not impossible to make an A on a paper. He has helped me become a much better writer!
Jaynes is easily my favorite professor I have ever taken. He's not only a great professor but he's really funny and easy to talk to. He shows interest in his students and works to actually help you improve. We did not meet for my class but this was one of the few classes I've taken that I wish we had! I guarantee you'll enjoy taking Jaynes.
Professor Jaynes is definitely my favorite professor so far. I've had him for English 1010 and 1020, both were very easy and also surprisingly enjoyable. Your grade is made up of only a few big assignments, so make sure to stick to the rubric and requirements for essays and such. He also offers revisions for essays. Very cool and chill professor.
Dr. Jaynes was great even though I had him for an online asynchronous class. He always gave great feedback and the pieces of literature we studied were always interesting.
This class wasn't too hard. There is a research essay due near the end of the semester. He helps you build up to the essay by preparing. He gives a lot of feedback and is easy to reach for questions.
Prof. Jaynes is amazing! He really cares about his students and works extra hard to make sure everyone is benefiting from his class. The papers he assigned are kind of tough but he allows you to revise them as many times as you need to get the grade you want. He's extremely helpful and just a great person all around.
Jaynes is awesome. Hes so willing to work with you and really cares about his students. I 101% recommend him. Some papers are difficult but he will help you immensely.
Great Professor. Super understanding and caring. Great feedback. Super clear with want he wants. Would take again. Willing to give extensions over anything
Dr. Jaynes is a really good professor. If you need a teacher who is super understanding, take him. As long as you communicate with him and are reasonable with your requests, he will help you. Definitely recommend him for English 1010
Wonderful professor. Very kind and helpful. If you come to class even with 5 min left, he will count you present.
Great Professor thats all i gotta say tbh
Theres so many things I could say about Professor Jaynes. Honestly his class was a lot of work but if you actually put the effort in its not difficult. Just discussions every week, two papers, a midterm and a final. I really enjoyed his class and he was very understanding with covid as well as mental health. I made an a in his class!
He's awesome. Super friendly and helpful anytime you reach out to him, not too writing heavy. The tests seem daunting but they're not bad if you keep up with the reading (there is a decent amount of reading). Definitely recommend.
This professor is amazing! He is so funny and tries to make class fun. He also wants students to pass and do well. If you read and do the assignments, you will pass. I have taken classes from him twice and he is my favorite professor.
Best professor Ive had hands down. While his classes are challenging, he is so kind and helpful! I have taken from him 3 times and would a million more. Amazing man.
Dude really cares that his students do well and is a super approachable person.
Material is conveyed clearly and he is more than willing to go more in depth and explain certain topics deeper if asked. Very relaxed and has a very warm and inviting classroom atmosphere.
Jaynes was amazing! Be ready to type because he is very paper oriented but he gives you all the materials to succeed, all you have to do is do your work and you'll pass
Lectures felt pointless, he would go on long stories that kinda related to the topic. He is super specific and strict about like three assignments then the rest are a little easy 100s. For the big papers, you could send him a copy of your work and he'd give feedback before due.
He's awesome. Helps you actually LEARN how to write better, not just how to pass.
His lectures are usually 80% rambling and 20% teaching but his coursework is easy and he gives really good feedback on essays. Definitely try to get this professor.
