If you enjoy writing lots of papers, this class is for you! The test are hard, but he does give you a chance to do better on them.
As a teacher, he is very interested in the subject. However, his grading system is unfair and unrealistic. His whole semester is worth only 100 points, consisting of a take-home & in-class midterm & final, 3 response papers(3 pgs each), and a 15 pg research paper. Not enough pre-final review. It felt like hard work was not recognized in the grades.
Mr. Kiraly is very enthusiastic, empathetic and understanding. He asks a lot of his students, but seems to ask more of himself. He is consistently well prepared, lectures are tight and well-formatted, the syllabus is clear and expectations are reviewed throughout the semester. He seems to truly enjoy his class, and that enthusiasm is catching.
This Teacher is Fantastic! I freakin hate the subject, and he is the only one I have seen who can present it in a fun and easy way. Also, he always uses the previous edition of the textbook, so you can buy it on Amazon for dirt cheap! A Great way to pass Poly Sci!
This teacher is one of my favorites at SRJC! He is really enthusiastic about the subject and made it so interesting. I wasn't interested in American government before him. He tells you exactly how to get an A and sometimes lets you redo assignments for a higher grade. If you do everything he asks and show up to the lectures, you will get an A.
Best professor I've had hands down. I have never met one this enthusiastic, passionate, intelligent, nurturing, and open-minded. He took a difficult, BORING subject and made me LOVE it. If you're planning to sleep through class, please show this man respect by choosing a dif. class. But if you immerse yourself in his class, you won't regret it.
I hate this subject and he made it worthwhile to come to class. Great teacher.
Mike is wonderful. He loves when the class gets involved in conversations and craves debate. He wants people to say what they're thinking (even if it pisses people off). Not a hard class. I took it over the summer and I think that was actually helpful. Mike is a wonderful man. I'd love to buy him a cup of coffee.
Kiraly has got to be one of the best teachers I've had the pleasure of learning from! With little to no interest in the topic upon entering the course, Kiraly was able to captivate my interest and make the subject matter comprehensive. Without my even asking he offered to write me a letter of recommendation! Kiraly is a great teacher and a good guy
A very good instructor. He obviously knows his stuff, takes great interest in student success, and works to ensure students understand the content of the course. I was worried at first, since Political Science isn't my thing, but he made it interesting to the point that I looked forward to class every week. An excellent teacher, this guy.
I recommend this professor to anyone who needs to take it. I took it while also taking 6 high school courses and managed to succeed. He tells you exactly what will be expected, and an A is easy to get if you do everything he requires, but the class is very interesting.
Wow. This guy can can take a pretty ho-hum subject and make it jump off the page. Very energetic, great class discussions... I learned a great deal from Professor Kiralay. I would highly recommend ANY class he's teaching.
I found the class to be pretty boring but I didnt try at all and I got a B show up enough and do you assignments and youll do well!
Mike is awesome! I had zero interest in this topic before taking his class. He is energetic, encourages participation, and he knows his stuff! I learned a lot. FANTASTIC INSTRUCTOR!
Had no interest in this subject but Mike Kiraly made it very interesting and his lectures were concise and to the point. I dreaded this class in the beginning and loved it at the end. Took it online. Bunches of work required but worth the effort. If you take this class be sure you turn in your work on time - he does not tolerate late work at all.
awsome teacher! take him!!
Had no interest in this class but had to take it. He is such a nice guy, and makes taking this class worth it! I have learned quite a bit;)
I took the online course. It is very interesting and straight forward. Every week there is a 25 question quiz and a 2 page essay done. No midterm or final. If you are good at essays, this class will be very easy for you.
POLS 1 Online - This class seemed very difficult at first, but really you just need to write a two page essay and take a quiz every week. (The essays are hard, but they are not graded - you just get full credit for doing them) The quiz answers are easily found in the book. Don't worry about the other stuff. I spent about 4 - 5 hours a week on it.
Easy teacher, didnt even buy the book, just listened to online lectures. Quizzes are easy, was able to keep the practice test open while taking the actual one! no final, really easy essays and he is super helpful and fast to respond. def take him online only though!!!!
I like Kiraly, he was a great guy and I assume a good teacher if you take him in person. His directions for the Online class were a very unclear and his online recorded lectures file playing formats change oddly in them middle of the semester (from Windows to realplayer) but all in all he is a good teacher, just unorganized for e-mail responses a
I thought Kirley's on-line class was fine. He is a good teacher, he has his students best interests at heart and puts a lot of thought and energy into his email responses. His expectations are fair and he gives ample opportunity to do well. If you do the work, the reading, take good notes, you'll do fine in this class. Highly recommend!
If you plan on taking this class just for GE and have no interest in Politics as a major, THIS IS THE CLASS FOR YOU!! Super easy online!!! There's an "essay" due every thursday and it's so easy to BS, he gives me full credit every time. Need the book to do the easy quizzes.
Really the best professor at SRJC, my opinion comes from the experience I have had completing 168 units there.
Great online class. Not too overwhelming with reading because he has recorded lectures. Essay due every week and weekly quiz which you'll need to book to complete. He does not require that you have the most recent edition of the book, so I bought the 2008-edition online for $5 and it worked perfect. I recommend Mike if you need to take online.
I would recommend this online class and professor. But be aware that "A" in his class from 94% and up!
A must for all students. Great teacher...you will not be unhappy with this class.
Best teacher I have ever had...even if u dn't like subject you will like this calss. Highly recommend taking this class.
Great class! I took this course online and it was crystal clear, and I loved the audio recordings instead of the usual reading. He is really into the topic and is willing to help and gives you quick responses to any questions that you have!
Mike is very fair in grading. We turned in 2 x 2-page papers & 1 10-page paper on pretty much open topics & most of the class got perfect grades on papers & A's in the class. You def. learn something, but he makes an otherwise boring subject to most, somewhat interesting! Reading is essential only for the pop quizes (3-4).
Király is amazing. I was dreading the class and not interested in poli sci, but he changed that. Took his Saturday class. He's passionate, understanding, respectful, fair, inspiring. Hard assignments but grades easy: 4 very short pop quizzes, 10-page paper, and for mid-term and final, 2 3-page papers each, plus in-class written responses.
Correction to the rating below, and a continuation.... the two essays (each) that he assigns for the mid-term and final are 2-3 pages. He reads drafts and makes himself available to students, but doesn't offer extra credit. He is so nice and fair ... everyone I have talked to says he's a great man.
Mike is awesome at what he does. He breathes life into a subject that most everyone hates to study, unless you are a Political Science Major...which I am not. Kept the class interesting and fun. If you are confused about something "throw a brick" at him and he will review it until you understand. Highly recommend his class!!
All the reviews on him below are true! he is a really good teacher and clear on what he wants. about an essay a week which aren't bad and tests which you have the text book infront of u to complete. TAKE HIM
Mr. Kiraly is one of the best instructors I have ever taken. Not knowing whether or not I would like this class, but had to take nevertheless...Mike made it fun, intertaining, and worth the time. I would highly recommend this class, even if this is not your subject. You will not be dissapointed.
I took POLS 1 online with Mike. It was a fairly easy class, with 3 page essays due most weeks as well as an online quiz (open book/note). Mike sent me very detailed responses back to each essay. There were NO midterms or exams. There wasn't even a final! I'd highly recommend this class. I learned a lot about political science!!
Very informational class. Fairly easy coursework, three page essay due weekly followed by a multiple choice open book test. You can always expect a prompt, detailed evaluation of your essay and Mr Kiraly is very helpful throughout the week. This class relies heavily on the textbook so purchasing it is a must. Definately recommend taking this course
Mike is awesome! He is such a nice guy. This class is easy but not boring. Its easy because he is helpful and clear. You can tell he loves what he does and he loves the topic and he doesnt push his views down your throat. He is a great teacher and super helpful.
I just cant say enough wonderful things about Mike. He is a great teacher very supportive and encouraging. Wants his students to succeed and really makes the topic interesting. He is knowledgeable and has a passion for the subject. Highly recommend.
Mr. Kiraly is very good, very helpful, very clear, and an excellent storyteller. His lectures are always interesting...but he lets class out early. He is tough on in-class work, but not on take-home papers. He is exactly punctual, and knows his subject well. This class is very time-consuming, lots of reading. Be ready to work hard!
Mr. Kiraly is a joke. I'm big into PS and this instructor would lose a PS quiz contest with a 5th grader. Keeps calling people "my friends" in his lecture. He needs to get a life and stop teaching a class he's not proficient in.
GREAT class. I have little interest in political science and I took this class online. By the end I couldn't believe how much more I understood about American Government. I love the critical thinking aspect of his teaching.
I understand why most people enjoy taking his class. It is seriously a no-brainer. I almost feel cheap for getting an accredited grade. Almost. Kiraly is one of those guys you often see or hear talking about politics with no real idea of how they actually function. I seriously wonder what gives him an ability to teach this subject professionally.
He was very quick and very organized when it came to grading. The assignments are pretty straight forward. Just do all of your work and you'll get through the class. Piece of cake! Taking it as a GE requirement so not heavily interested in the topic. But he's good if you want to get in and out with a good grade! I thought he was great!
Mike is a fun teacher and his class will definitely open your eyes to political science (for those of us with no prior interest). He's quick to reply with grades on the weekly essays and the tests are a breeze. I think I opened the book twice the entire semester and still received an A, so take that for what it's worth.
I took this class online. There is a 40 quiz and a 3 page essay due every week. If you can write an essay quickly this class is for you! He doesn't grade harshly at all and he gives you really good feedback. Wasn't so much an easy A but an A is almost guaranteed if you do the weekly assignments!
This class will make you WORK.I took it online over summer, yes there are 40 pt quizzes, there are 3 pg essays but over summer you have 3 of each per week..not easy not fun...but he is an easy grader with a kind you-can-do-this attitude!
I took this course back in 2011 and this was one of the best courses I have ever taken. Mike is a great teacher that explains the topic with clarity and expertise. I would highly recommend taking this course in which I took on a Sat. morning. You will not regret the decision.
GREAT TEACHER!! He is very clear in his instruction and caters it to the assignments so you know exactly what he wants in the essays. The class is not easy by any means (sometimes 3 essays and 3 quizzes due a week), however, if you work hard in the class he will see it and grade accordingly.
Three page essays due every week, read a chapter every week, watch 2 hour video every week, and take a quiz every week. It's a lot of work but he replies to emails promptly and if you watch the video it will help you understand what you have to do for the essay and it will make the reading more clear.
Amazing Professor! Awesome class! We need more professors like him!
I took this class in Summer; most youtube videos are 3 hours long. Good thing is, if you have got the time to listen to those videos, you probably wouldn't need to read the book. 2 to 3 quizzes and essays per week, that is quite a lot of work; good thing, the instructor is cooperative if you miss any assignment and able to see your efforts.
15 papers and about 12 or 13 exams. Can't remember. One essay and one exam due every Friday. Seriously, but he basically gives you an A on a paper if you do it. The class itself is pretty easy, but the exams are difficult. Just be ready to have no life when you take this class. A really nice guy though. I would take him again!
Helpful and knowledgable. I love politics, and this online course was fun. I learned a lot, even if the quizzes were difficult, I could get creative on my essays and learn that way. Friendly and teaches in a easy-going way. Take this poli sci course, it's super interesting!
The course had an exam and an essay for each weak... as a full time student I struggled to keep up and even missed the due date for a few of the essay's but everytime I emailed him for more time, or when I had an issue, he was more then willing to help out.
I was very intimidated by this class at first. But than as I looked at his teaching style and the way the class was instructed, it became very easy and simple. The essays can be a little time consuming and hard, but he is a very easy grader. Gives very good feedback. Quizzes arent difficult. Very easy class. Great teacher!
Took the class online during the summer and it is VERY time consuming. 2-3 papers due per week and 2-3 "quizzes" per week. The quizzes were worth the majority of the grade and each was 40 questions so they felt more like exams and they were just as hard as an exam. Overall it's not very difficult to get an A, just a lot of work.
Weekly 40 question quizes AND weekly 3 page essays . A LOT of work for a 3 unit class. I completed nearly every assignment in the class, aside from one, and I got a B. The professor resonds to every essay you write which is nice feedback. I learned a lot and appreciated the you tube lectures. Prepare to spend a minimum of 4-6 hours a week.
I took Kiraly's POLS1 class online this last Fall semester because a friend recommended me to. He warned me that there was a 3 page essay and a 40 question quiz almost every week which is kind of overwhelming at first. Although, as the semester went on, it was easy to get both done in a sufficient amount of time. Would really recommend for online.
Assigns a 3-page paper each week, only graded if you also complete the quiz. Extra 80 points after the last assignment if you turn everything in. First few weeks make sure to watch lectures. Even though they are a couple hours long, he will tell you EXACTLY what to write in the paper. I stressed at first, but writing became easier. He's accessible!
Not hard, but demands quite a bit of work. At least a 3 page paper each week, and most weeks a quiz as well. On the plus side, he records fairly interesting lectures. If you can put the time in, coming out with an A shouldn't be too hard. Unlike some liberal arts instructors, he is not fishing for a specific answer, which is nice.
one 3-page essay per week along with one 40-question quiz. Seems daunting but one of the most enjoyable classes this semester. For the essay, the most important thing is to write something.
Mike clearly is very passionate about the subject which is evident in his lectures. If you take the class online make sure to make time to really read the book in order to be able to pass the quizzes. You can do very well on the essays with just the recorded lectures. He was accommodating when I needed an extension on an essay.
Mr. Kiraly is a great teacher. I had no background in Political Science, and honestly did not have much interest before this course as I was taking it to fulfill a requirement. This class involves a lot of work, but you will leave the class with a better understanding of government. I enjoyed it and I feel more inclined to participate in politics.
Loved this class! Professor Kiraly clearly loves teaching. I learned how much I didnt know about our political history and structure in the United States and that I actually find the bare bones of politics very interesting. He cares about the success of his students. Great lectures and I appreciated the way he structured the course.
He motivated me to do better in his class, never thought I would be interested in Political Science! If you fall behind, he will be concerned about you, but in a caring way! I definitely recommend him, he treats his students with humility and equality!
I am taking POLS 1 online in the summer. If you can do all the assignments and finish with at least an 85 percent, 80 extra points for completing everything will bump you up to an A. There is a ton of writing and prior knowledge alone won't get you through the quizzes, but this man cares, grades quickly, and gives detailed feedback on your work.
I took the class in the summer. If you miss assignments, its extremely difficult to pass, but the information to pass is contained in the lectures and reading, so if you do the class work, you should be able to pass. I learned a lot. Ask questions, emails are responded to promptly and the submission comments are thoughtful.
If you have the chance to take Kiraly do it. It's not the hardest class in the world, but one quiz and a 3 page paper once a week along with his video lectures wasn't difficult in the slightest to me. If you do everything on time you'll get an A. He is a really awesome dude who cares about his students and his work. He opened up my eyes politically
I took his class online where there was a quiz and 2-3 page essay every week. All the answers for the quizzes are online so they are super easy. He's also a super easy grader on his essays. You don't need to watch his entire lecture videos, just skip to the parts where he talks about writing the essay and follow that.
If you don't like essays do not take his online class because every week there is a 3 pg essay about a video he made and posted on youtube that is about 1 - 3 hrs long. The videos are outdated and not the best quality. He is really passionate about POLS, but if you're taking this class for the credits it's a lot of effort for only 3 units.
Professor Kiraly seems like a nice person whose extremely educated on political science! This class does require a 3 page essay and 40 question quiz each week. He NO LONGER does the 80 points extra credit at the end of the semester, which is disheartening because he used to do it for every previous class. Therefore, its a bit misleading from rates
Professor Kiraly definitely loves what he teaches and it shows; however, if you want to take his political science course over the summer I would advise you to take his class ONLY. His course is very fast-paced with two to three essays due per week (let's not forget reading quizzes along with them). If you decide to enroll, proceed with caution.
He gives great feedback and truly cares about student success. But get ready for a lot of work. Summer Pols1 consisted of 3, 3 page papers a week and 3 quizzes a week. It's very straight forward, easy to pass if you just do the work. I'd recommend taking this class, easy grader, but you need to put in the work.
Mike is very knowledgable in pol sci. and knows what he's talking about, he strives to find a deeper understanding of the material. That being said theres a ridiculous amount of work and if you miss one assignment it could hurt your grade. He is a nice man but you definitely need to work hard. long videos 3 page essays and 40 question quizzes.
Mike is a very knowledgeable teacher. His class is very interesting but to those who want to take it over the summer, its a lot of work. There are so many papers, 1 due every 3 days along with lengthy quizzes. Mike is very accessible outside of class and wants his students to succeed. If I could do it again I would take it during a reg. semester.
took this class online in the summer and the workload was very heavy. Essays, online quizzes nearly 3x per week based on video lectures (1.5-3 hours long, no ppts provided) and textbook reading, also outside research is necessary to synthesize material well. He is very quick to respond to emails, and essays are graded within 1-2 days.
Mike is passionate about his material, and would be a great teacher for a higher level course. I took him for an intro class and the workload was ridiculous, an essay and a 40 question quiz every single week. During the fires, he excused our class from turning in our essay then surprised us by assigning it along with another for the following week
Mike is an amazing professor! He is highly passionate, caring, and knowledgable. There is no group work, only an essay and quiz per week. With his online lectures, he thoroughly explains the essay material, grades it extremely fairly, and gives extremely helpful feedback. This isn't an easy A, but if you try, you will learn a tremendous amount!
Don't take this class, especially over the summer. There's an overbearing reading schedule, 3 essays a week and hours-long video lectures which are grating and unnecessarily hard. Essay prompts are purposefully unclear and you need to learn how to write the way he wants, by regurgitating his talking points in the videos to get a good grade.
Passionate about his subject & it shows. Recorded lectures are thorough and cover current topics (Trump's trade war w China, impeachment process). I esp like he doesn't express his personal political feelings, just teaches politics and the mechanics of American Government. Fair grader, good affordable book. Responds *immediately* to emails. Take!!
Excellent prof. One of the best I've had at the jc. Reasonable amount of work for this class.
worst class I have taken(summer online.) Lectures r outdated and hard to follow as they were hours long. 15 3-page essays, along with 40 point weekly quizzes, sometimes even 2 essays or 2 quizzes in 1 week.I got an A- but barely. I also emailed several times to get help and he just didn't respond. Don't recommend :(
I took this summer class. Kiraly condenses a full 17 week semester into a 6 week summer course. To imagine there would be less work is a disservice not only to the students, but to the value of an SRJC degree. He warns folks of the "breakneck speed" of the summer online, and encourages everyone to be pragmatic about the time and effort. Good prof.
Mike is clearly passionate about political science. He has interesting lectures, but they are outdated. I was happy to take polsci in an election year but his lectures were from 2013! Quizzes were impossible for me to pass. Im an A student and couldnt get more than a 60% on his quizzes. He tries to trick you every question!
Király is an excellent professor for political science. He is wise, insightful, and provokes the minds of his students through his lectures and essay prompts. His class is not an easy A. I took it online and had to put in a healthy amount of effort each week. He is very fair with grading, however.
Why are his lectures in 144p in 2020? He's clear on what he wants, but his lectures are ridiculously dry and only 1/3 of it actually matters for what you need to pass. His slides also aren't centered during the video lectures and go across the screen for no reason. Does not offer powerpoints so you have to copy down from the grainy videos.
Mike is an amazing teacher. He makes me wish I could have take it in person. Just with his YouTube videos, you can tell how passionate and serious he takes this class. Read the chapters. Dont skim. Take notes off the lectures and youll get that A. He makes you work, so that A wont be easy. Easy to talk with via email and is fast to respond.
This guy is a really strong teacher. I want to teach, too, so I was making notes on how he works. It felt he put in a lot of work in his responses. He is consistently polite, lectures are tight and well-formatted, the syllabus is clear and reviewed throughout the semester. He seems to truly enjoy his class, and that enthusiasm is catching. Take him
Kiraly is respectable for his lectures and knowledge on the subject. Although he assigns weekly essays and quizzes, he is clear on what is expected. He is however, horrible at communication. He has office hours via phone, yet would deny calls and reply to a few emails. He says he cares about his student's success, but his actions say otherwise.
His summer class was a lot of work but he was consistently encouraging. I liked he was really enthusiastic. His lectures were recorded in front of a live class so I felt I was right there when students asked quest. I've read prior ratings and he was always available for me. He spent a half hour on the phone with me once talking through an outline.
Mike is a great dude and he deeply cares about his students. He wants to make sure you understand everything. It was a tough class to take over the summer though because you would have multiple 3-page essays and quizzes to do. In all honesty, the essays are easy he just wants to see that you were thinking about the question. I would recommend him
Professor Kiraly was a solid Instructor. I took his class during the summer so the workload was pretty rigorous. But I enjoyed his lectures and he gives great feedback on essays. Even though my class was online because of COVID, you could tell through the lectures he enjoyed what he was doing and knew what he was talking about.
Professor Kiraly is so great! Every polisci class is going to be difficult, but he is super straight forward in what he expects. There is a paper and quiz due every Friday @8am so manage your time well! His lectures are on YouTube. He responds to emails usually within 3hrs. The class is smooth sailing if you put the work in, its a lot, but worth it
Very passionate and knowledgable in polysci, but for an intro class, the standards were significantly higher than expected. I finished with an 89.82 and he passed me with a B. If you bs the essays at all, he will give you a failing grade. The quizzes are very long and time consuming as well as this class was.
Class was online due to the pandemic. 1 essay a week with a chapter to read and a lecture to watch but very good about giving feedback for the work and doesnt grade hard at all. Really easy to communicate with and as long as you take notes the essays are easy to get done and material is easy to understand.
Kirarly is a great teacher. Very passionate about the class. Reading is necessary to get a good grade on the quiz. Lectures are more oriented to weekly papers. If you time your work well its an average workload. If you put in the work and participate in discussions it will reflect on your final grade. He is also a fast grader.
I took it in the summer so it was consolidated. There was an essay due once a week as well as an accompanied quiz. If you do the work and watch the 2+ hour lecture, your essay is an easy A. He is very passionate, but for an intro class, I felt like he took it was to seriously. I would get it if it were a higher up class though.
This was probably the most I learned about political science ever. So many papers, but I say this as a good thing-At first, I complained about the weekly essays, but they got incredibly easy once I started to understand more about the material & found myself writing more than what was needed- took his class 2 years ago and still remember lectures!
He teaches polysci entry level, but has high expectations for students, requiring them to have past knowledge of both politics and history. He gives numerous assignments where he demands that students meet all his criteria for his papers, despite the fact that he does not make the rubric or the prompt clear. Would not recommend, avoid.
Mike Kiraly was honestly one of the best teachers I've ever had his lectures thoroughly interpret the topics and he explains it in such a way where you retain majority of the information. I would find myself telling my family random political science facts throughout the day. You must put in the work but he really grades fairly and cares!
Lots of homework: A 3-page essay and 20-40 questions quiz once a week. Easy A if you commit. You will learn a lot if you actually take the time to go through his lecture materials and feedbacks.
Took this during the summer & it was a fast-paced class. The workload seemed more on par for a 4 credit. 2 papers & 2 40 question quizzes each week. There is a recorded lecture (2-3 hours) & chapter (20 pages) that goes along with each paper & exam. You must read the chapter & watch the lecture in order to pass quizzes.
I took this class during the summer. I learned a lot about Political, and It was a lot of work, but his responses on the assignments I turned in kept me going. He is a great and outgoing professor, but taking this class during the summer is not a good experience unless you don't mind dedicating most of your time to this class.
15 essays and quizzes every week. It's a LOT of work. The essays are straight forward. He tells you in the lectures what each paragraph should be. His lectures are 2-3 hours long. he talks really slow so you can change the playback speed to make it go by quicker. He's a good communicator & gives good feedback. an easy A if you put in the work
I never wanted to take PoliSci so I saved it for the last of my Gen Ed classes. Professor Kiraly was great. I really liked online for this class, he teaches it well. I didnt like the quizzes, because usually I do really well on quizzes but these ones I really struggled to get good grades on. Lots of papers but it was easy to do well on them.
Kiralys lectures can be 2- 3 hrs per week and hard to get through. However, they contain interesting information that isnt found in the other reading and helped me write good essays. Kiraly is fast to respond and encouraging on his essay feedback. Like others, I found quizzes hard bc they included info not in materials. I learned so much.
Mike is amazing, take his class! He is readily available for his students and grades papers the same day they're due so you always know where you're at. Grading criteria is straightforward and he sets you up for success if you follow his grading rubric. Also, tests didn't have a time limit and papers were due consistently with each chapter.
Prof. Kiraly gives good feedback on papers (constructive criticism). There's a lot of reading and writing (13 papers) and this class would be easier during the fall with 1 week per paper, but it's not hard. Prof. Kiraly grades easy and wants you to understand the ideas from his lectures (make sure to know his definition of the Madisonian model).
He is very passionate about political science and that can be seen and heard in his lectures. Good respectful professor. He has weekly quizzes and weekly essays. I would take one of his classes again now that I know what he looks for.
Although this class can be overwhelming at times, I truly learned so much and got great feedback on all my papers from Professor Kiraly. You can tell he cares about and wants to see what his students learn and pick up on. Lectures and research is thorough, but this ensures that you turn in a great paper and in turn get a good grade.
This class took time. You roughly have an essay due every Friday at 8 am and about a 2-3 hour lecture and a 20-ish question quiz. But if I had spread out the work it wouldn't be that bad. Although there were a lot of essays, I felt like I learned so much, and the essays improved my writing! He graded very fairly and essays weren't that bad.
This is one of the worst classes at the SRJC. Unfortunately the only reason people take this class is because it is a requirement for GE. Be prepared to dedicate hours to writing a single paper. This class was more time consuming than the 3 other 5 unit science courses I have taken. This class is a waste of time.
One of the worst classes I have ever taken. The workload is tough, but the way he assesses understanding of the material is even worse. Full score on the weekly essays is only possible if you hit exactly all the very specific points he is looking for but won't say. Weekly quizzes are impossible to get a full score on unless you get lucky guessing.
This class is a lot of work. The weekly quizzes of 40 questions are hard and worded in a way that the book doesn't explain to you those ideas. lectures are a lot of info but that doesn't make it easy to understand unless you know alot about political science already.
Hes not a mean person but dear god does he assign so much homework this class is not easy at all I was fooled by his good reviews and I can say without a doubt you will be reading and writing like every single day. Not to mention he makes things due on FRIDAY at 8:00am, which is horrible timing I don't get why he chose to do that.
Took this class last summer, couldn't see myself doing it for a full semester. 2 essays & 2 quizzes to complete each week. Tough critic when it comes to essays and gives you lengthy replies on your work, 1/2 what he likes about the paper and 1/2 what could be done better/other info he liked to share. Essays are 3 pages & quizzes are 80 questions!
Kiraly is a kind professor and you can feel it as a student. He is kind of old school in his teaching, long lectures and an essay and test every week. This is a lot of work for those with a busy schedule. However, he is obviously very passionate in his teaching. Although a difficult class, I feel Kiraly is there to support students who need help.
If you need this class for credit take it, and if you need to for your future major take it. All you have to do is watch the weekly lecture if not there's a transcript you can read. And you just have to write an essay about what you learned. And if you use information from your Textbook and the lecture you'll get an A.
Bad teacher to take of summer. Way too many papers and way too much reading.
Lectures are extremely outdated and insufferable to listen to. He uses passages out of his own book, as well as other written texts, as lecture material. His "personalized feedback" is nothing more than AI generated responses (as evinced by several AI detectors). Grades arbitrarily and tests are impossible to get 100% due to convoluted wording.
A great professor. He knows his stuff!! Yeah, it's a lot of reading and writing, but I felt like I received a fair grade for my work. He is available, compassionate, and timely initiative his responses. Good experience.
Took his summer course, a full 17 week semester condensed into 6.5. All the content presented so we summer students got full education. M pulled it off w grace & humor, made sure folks were on-track. Took personal interest in EACH of us. The lectures might be a couple years old, but updated by current events discussion pages & seminar questions.
One of the best courses at our JC. Kiraly is academically rigorous. His lectures are long, and a lot of readings in the text and supplemental. His use of the discussion boards helped me put theory to practice and take what I see happening in Washington with a new perspective. An excellent instructor!!!
Honestly, best class I've taken at SRJC. Mike made complex issues super easy to grasp. I went from barely passing to loving gov't classes. Real-life examples & current events made it feel so relevant. 10/10 would recommend, 5 stars isn't enough.
My primo took his class a few years ago & said he was a good prof. She was right, he was really communicative, answered emails fast, responded to disc boards often, and was overall a good teach. Folks here are right, this class is a lot of work. I worked pretty hard and got a B, but he warned us in the lead up that it was gunna be a hard run.
Took his class over the summer and cried. 3 essay a week with 3 house long lectures for each and reading on top of that. Sometimes not clear on what he wants for the essay so I usually got a A or an F never anything in between. Email him and he is helpful and repost quickly. He seems very passionate and the topics are interesting, its just a lot.
I took his summer class and it was a rough workload so might be better as a full sem. class. He seemed okay but when asked how to improve on an essay his response was short and provided no help. His grading was hit or miss sometimes harsh on parts "missing" when there wasn't always clear expectations on what should be included.
Expect to spend 1-2 hours reading the assigned textbook chapters and watching lectures that span 2-3 hours + supplemental reading. You also have a quiz and essay due every week. He knocks off points if he feels somethings are missing, so be sure to jolt down what he excepts or get ready to get 15 points knocked off from your essay. Manage your time
Essay due every like 3 days but honestly not that bad, good teacher.
