Good teacher, fun guy. Req: debates, "cultural" papers, overall very good
The best teacher I have ever had. All his subjects are intellectually stimulating, and his class is always open to debate.
I second the notion that he is the best teacher I've ever had. His classes are hard but his "Austrian Socialism" keeps you from getting to bad of a grade if you struggle. A wonderful teacher in every way.
You'll feel like you're failing right up until you get your A. His tests are extraordinarily hard. But his bell-curve is extraordinarily generous. He wont let you fail. Just don’t panic. You had an A and you didn’t even know it :) One of the best.
He gives GREAT study guides w/ everything on the test and the pages to find the answers. As long as you study it you should do great on his tests. Has great video clips in class, and is very helpful on papers and such. lots of ways to earn points(quizes, extra credit opportunities, etc.) so your grade isn't just based on tests.
Study Guides are filled with tons of information, so study like crazy. His thinking is way beyond most students and doesn't come out too clearly. But there is alot to be said about his use of Austrian Socialism.
Easy class; helpful. Be warned-he is an intense critic of P. Benson, Mckay, and even has made very inappropriate remarks about P. Hinckley. Ex: said that Martin V Buren was justified to shun Joseph and watch Saints murdered. Also makes students read book with****ographic scenes. Nothing against him-but I worry about him and whoever takes his class
He's armed to the teeth with historical trivia, but he's not so good at teaching what he knows to the class. He's a goofball...once I saw him at a concert dancing away to the music.
He was a fun teacher to be around. I liked his entertaining classes, but his exams had nothing to do with what he taught in class. Always willing to help you with his Austrian socialism.
His lectures are engaging but his baseline cultures are very vague.
No need to remember dates + if you can regurgitate what he said in class on the test you will do fine, not my favorite professor, but if you take 121 on the block all is well.
Brother Lenhart is a great teacher! He teaches things that are true. Some people are afraid to know the truth but he tells them anyway. I have had 3 classes from him and think he's great. He's made me think, but that is what a teacher is supposed to do. If you don't want to hear the truth, even about prophets, then why are you in college.
Always has some fun clip to watch that relates to the material. He really knows European history beecause he was raised in Europe.
Very random, tests are hard because most test material isn't in the lectures. Tests go past the facts, you must think conceptually. Baseline cultures are ridiculous. Basically, I don't reccommend Bro. Lenhart...
For this class you must read the text! His lectures are too unorganized and distraught to be able to pass tests from, the text and reviews he gives you are key. It is very clear he has a great knowledge of historical issues, but he just doesn't present it well. Tests are hard, but if you read and do the review, your golden.
If you like a teacher who lays out all of the assignments and information don't take Lenhart. It's impossible to know when what is due. I e-mailed him about the group projects, because he didn't say anything about what they're about, when they're due. I went to take a test and it's supposed to have been open 2 days and it's not!!
He is a very cool guy. He uses a multi-cultural approach and is very open minded. His class can sometimes get a little confusing (mostly in know what you should be doing) but I found that the cultural insights that he gives are very important. You have to be an open minded person to enjoy his class and I am so I loved him!
Bro. Lenhart is awesome. I have had him twice. The first time I took him for 202, I was lost during his lectures. The second time I understood his thinking a lot better. He likes to connect things together like some sort of puzzle and draws events and facts in that seem totally unrelated. I loved his lectures though. They are interesting.
Class is very demanding. You have a lot of work to do, (Ex: 4 tests, 10 quizes, a 10 page biography, 10 one page essays, read a 200 page book and test on it) but if you like to learn, and i do mean learn, its hard to beat this class. He is very passionate about what he teaches. Also, you dont need to know dates or facts. Think culturally!
As a person, Professor Lenhart is a great guy. As a teacher, he is not so good. I was lost so much with his random teaching and off subject banter. Sure, he has cool experiences, being from Germany and all, but it didn't tie in with the lessons.
Boring. His in-class material has absolutely nothing to do with your grade, except when you present. The quizzes and tests are pulled from the most random and difficult material.
Brother Lenhart is a really nice guy, but he is very hard to understand, if you don't mind having structure or knowing what to do in your class he is great, but he gets off topic alot and the tests are not covered at all in class, while he is easy don't expect to gain much from his class
Bro Lenhart is an awesome teacher. His knowledge is amazing on the topic!! At first it is hard to understand the connections he is making, but they really stick with you. The reading doesn't apply to to the lectures, but it is half of the tests. He is awesome!!
I loved this class. His approach is new, as he can add information from Germany, His family was there during the war. Very good insight, and the homework and tests are very straight forward.
Hes a great teacher to take for 202. He spends alot of time on Youtube looking up clips for class, he is sometimes scatterbrained but he knows his stuff, he simplifies history, is a great guy and I wish he taught more classes.
I thought his tests were really hard but I loved his class because I learned so much. He really knows what he is talking about and finds interesting things to spice up the lessons
so, i was a little disappointed with how much i didn't learn in this class. bro. lenhart is an OK teacher.he's passionate, but i don't think class does it for him. the homework is easy, but VERY time consuming. it's interesting, sometimes, but i wish i'd learned more. a lot of group projects on the same country over and over. what you make of it.
Hard class but if you put in the work you will learn a lot. This class is definitely a college level class. His tests are insane. Read the chapters and study that study guide till your brain explodes. He is really passionate about this subject and he has really interesting insights into Germany
Had his for Europe and World Civ History. Both classes were a blast. Yes it can be confusing, but if you talk to him after class he will go over everything with you. No reason not to get an A
He is a really nice guy but i did not learn anything. He goes off on Tangents all the time and i think you watch little movie clips more then anything. His tests are crazy hard and you have to work your butt off to do well on them. Study his study guides like crazy!!! Its the only way it will ever make any sense!
Interesting idea for a class but Bro. Lenhart is a horrid professor. I didn't learn a thing in this class. He spent too much time going off on tangents and we never knew when class met since he always threw in random online days. Homework was easy but time-consuming. Take this class if you must but find someone else who teaches it first!
He is such a frustrating teacher. He goes off and talks about 3 tangents in class and that takes up the whole time so you end up having to teach yourself and play catch up for what he DOESN'T do.He is a smart guy and you can tell he knows his stuff but he is a horrible teacher. I would highly NOT recommend. Do yourself a favor and not take him.
You have to study with Brother Lenhart, and he does tend to go off on tangents, but - as long as you keep up with the reading, you'll be totally fine and NOT bored to death from reviewing a single chapter over and over. He's awesome.
Not very clear at what is expected of you. Class time is boring and full of tangents. Not very clear. A lot of work required for the class.
I hate his teaching style, its very laissez faire and he's not very clear on his expectations. The quiz questions are very specific, and his ideas are really fun. His carry-through is terrible and he goes on multiple tangents every class.
I do not recommend this class at all. Brother Lenhart's tests were ridiculously hard, and as an Elementary Ed major, I found no purpose in how this will help me as a teacher. I learned absolutely nothing, and there were too many random tangents for me to keep interest.
Very knowledgeable professor, but he struggles in being clear about assignments. He does go out on tangents but some of them are good. If you know the terms on the study guide you will do well on his tests. He's not a harsh grader of papers either. Offers extra credit. Not sure why people thing he's tough...
Brother Lenhart doesn't know how to teach. He gets up there and shows youtube videos about the developing world the whole time. 30% of your grade is based off of group work and if members of your group don't pull their weight, he will NOT help you. Get anyone else but him.
It was a horrible class, not because i the content but because of the set up. He had it almost all in group work and no way to grade the members of our group so one or two people would earn all the grades for the group. He didn't grade anything, it was all his assistant and the assignments were huge and unclear. It was my most frustrating class.
Not a well organized class, He shows videos until class is almost over, then you have to rush through the lesson. No way to grade your group members so the slackers get the same grade as the workers. No clarification or heads-up for upcoming assignments. It's like he doesn't even like his own class
Confusing, unorganized, and chaotic. You have no idea when anything is due for this class or what he expects of you. It's not hard, but massively frustrating as it never seems like he knows what he's doing. Also, he tried to convince the class that karate was Chinese so that's the kind of factual information you'll be getting here.
I like this class a lot I think he brings and interesting perspective to this time period and and I learned a lot from this class. He is a good teacher.
He's so distracted all the time, and he can be confusing about expectations and due dates. Just keep an eye on the syllabus, and do the cultural readings/book quizzes. When it comes to the exams.. you can pass easily by using the study guide, his ID questions save your grades so study those! Boring/pointless class, but attendance is crucial.
Terrible teacher, too many tangents, and horrible with his time management (countless days during the semester were spent watching unnecessary videos, wasting half of the class before the curriculum is even mentioned). His class is incredibly disorganized, and he won't help you or respond to emails.
I loved the concepts that we learned in this class, but Bro. Len hart has no idea how to teach them. The write on sections of the tests are fairly easy, but the multiple choice questions on tests contain answers that aren't even found in the book. Doesn't do anything to help you, and doesn't answer questions specifically. Tangents galore!
Only 3-4 test. His lectures cover the basics though. You have to read the book to do the study guide and about half of it will be on the test. A little hard. Only have to do 5 400 word reports before each test on a topic from the book. Funny, shows interesting videos, and has a lot of cool stuff from WW2 and stuff to show in class. 1 presentation.
I loved this class. Lots of people didn't which i can not understand. Bro. Lenhart is so freaking funny I would laugh out loud in his class all the time. His lectures are supplemental to the readings so you need to do both to get good grades on the test. I have learned a lot and am super glad i took this class.
Tangents anyone? Don't worry, the material in the tests (the multiple choice) are impossible to understand and the answers aren't found in the book. Hard to follow during lectures. Impossible to take notes. For instance, he hates the founding fathers and the US was to blame in WWII. Be sure to do it all an your own.
I just felt confused most of the time, even though I'd be proactive and try and understand the course and assignments. This stems out of the problem of bad teaching, organization, and not syncing up what he lectures on and has you quizzed on. It's kind of fragmented, though interesting material. TONS of group projects entire semester.
He is an alright teacher and is very passionate about what he teaches. Most of the time he teaches over our heads but if you do well on the exams and quizzes (that are online and you can usually do twice) you will finish the class with an A. The group projects seem hard but they are incredibly easy.
I really enjoyed Brother Lenhart, I thought his lectures were interesting and entertaining. A fair criticism is that the main paper assigned is a little confusing, but Brother Lenhart is a pretty lenient grader.
Loved his classes. Very helpful and very passionate about his work. Thoroughly enjoyed his Modern European class and even took a senior capstone/seminar course with him as well. Inspirational for sure. He may come off as confusing, but give it some time. If you're passionate about history, this is your teacher. If you're not--leave!
Brother Lenhart is a nice guy, but he's a bad teacher. The entire class is a tangents where he talks about whatever he wants. Nothing he says is on the test, and the answers are not in the book. There are a lot of surprise assignments. If you like clear, laid-out classes, this class is not for you. He's nice, but I wouldn't take a class from him.
Brother Lenhart is one of the most unprofessional teachers I've ever had. He wastes our time by talking about things that aren't related to what we read about and doesn't adequately test our knowledge of what is in the reading. Class doesn't end on time. Also doesn't leave enough time for group project presentations, which is rude. Don't take him.
Brother Lenhart was an awful teacher. He never explained what his expectations were for the class, his syllabus, which is what he lives off of, is 14 pages long and very confusing. He lectures in class without explaining things or actually teaching. I never knew what he wanted in my papers or assignments. I didn't learn anything the entire class.
This was probably the most disorganized class I've ever taken. All the homework was busy work and didn't help you learn anything. Brother Lenhart tests were impossible to study for. Would not recommend.
Okay the way he teaches is unique and not always super straightforward- however he is pretty good at recapping and is willing to listen to students and explain things. Even does test prep for students. To me he wasn't easy but he wasn't super hard. He's not even comparable in difficulty to Crisp or Peck. He randomly funny too.
Arguably the biggest waste of my time throughout the semester. I took FDCIV from him, and I couldn't have hated it more. First off, he assigns work books that are just "busy work" that can take you about 2-3 hours. They ask you to define super generic things like "what is human nature? Give an example from history." I wish I had more space to wri-
Bring questions to class, contribute in discussions, and you'll be fine. His Modern American class will expand your vision if you go to his class with an open mind. The guy's funny and quick so it helps if you tell jokes relevant to class but don't try too hard. Two things I wasn't a fan of: One is the group paper, the other is the online quiz.
He's classes are fine. He seems to know a lot about the subjects. Unfortunately for me, there are so many things to read and write that is crazy. Other than that, he's fine.
Mike Lenhart is a very knowledgeable teacher. I learned so much from his class, but as an international student I felt I needed to work even harder to understand his teachings and lectures. We had to read many, many papers for our weekly homework and some of the things we read were never discussed in class.
Brother Lenhart knows a lot, but is very disorganized and distracted. Class is completely all over the place. I never knew what was going on or what was due when. TANGENTS GALORE. Class never EVER ends or starts on time. Honestly worst class/prof I've ever had. Only good thing is tests are take home... that saved me!
Great Guy. Knows a lot about the topics. Hard to follow what he's talking about, goes on tangents, and then brings it back somehow. Prayer halfway through class instead of @ beginning because rambling. Hates i-learn, so page is super unorganized. Have to rely on him telling you due dates, and rubrics are vague @ best. can still ace though.
Honestly one of my favorite teachers of all time. I learned so much from his class. I would take any class he teaches. He is friendly and willing to help. Just do the readings and you will be fine. Take him!
Brother Lenhart is a super nice guy, he gives lots of extra credit and his homework load is very reasonable. However his lectures and class structure are a mess. I haven't learned anything in his class, he goes on tangents and its really hard to follow. But overall the class wasn't terrible. But if youre looking to learn a lot I wouldn't take him.
Speak quickly, but is funny and understanding. Not great at reminding you of due dates so... PAY ATTENTION TO THE GRADE BOOK! But overall an amazing teacher and would definitely take a class with him again.
Brother Lenhart is a really nice guy. If you want a class that you'll learn a lot in he's probably not the guy for you, but he is so nice and tries to make his classes fun and interesting! He is very easy to work with and gives lots of extra credit. His class was the most chill one I had this semester and he is not strict which is super awesome
Lenhart is SUCH a nice individual. He knows LOTS about European history. His class is very lecture heavy, his quizzes are a mess, and his tests are tortuously long. His lessons are quite jumbled and are often repetitive, and it's easy to get lost. He is slow to grade, and he has a hard time fixing problems concerning grades. He's a nice guy though!
It's OK if you like Br Lenhart. He cares a lot, GREAT lecture multimedia, extra credit ops... But we were miserable. Disorganized syllabus, doesn't test on in-class material, VERY repetitious, vague instructions. Plus, people from the past/now Lenhart agrees with"the head"smart, people he disagrees with"the heart"morons. Nice guy, PAINFUL class
Lots of people struggle with the disorganization of Dr. Lenhart. Its true that his classes seem quite sporadic, but he provides lots of resources for students to learn a lot. Additionally, I felt that he genuinely cared about each student far more than most professors. Although the class itself can be perplexing, I managed to get an A.
Brother Lenhart was not my favorite teacher. He would start class five minutes early sometimes and he would lecture for hours. It was a 7:45 class and we would not get to the prayer till 8:20 sometimes. He always wanted a recap of last class but the recaps were 30 minutes long. He assigned a big group project the week of finals.
So disorganized, lectures super hard to follow, and doesn't explain the assignments or expectations well at all. This class should be interesting as a usual history lover, but instead I dread it! Lenhart is very smart but he does not try to help students succeed. Prepare to be highly confused and bored in this class.
Great professor. One of the few classes I have taken where I have actually gained practical knowledge about being a helpful contributor to society. He provides great input. He actually changed my mind about a few ideas I had about how society functions. Only complain are the book readings. They are long and they can be confusing.
I don't know where to start. We didn't really start class until 30 minutes in then we had a 15-20 minute recap of the previous class before talking about content adjacent topics for the remainder. It took the class 4 weeks to try to understand the syllabus and expectations for the course, then we were all still confused. You won't learn anything.
I thought that Brother Lenhart was a good person, but for a teacher he wasn't ideal. He loves to go on weird tangents which made it hard to pay attention. He starts class at weird times and ALWAYS makes someone give a recap of the previous class. The class was 90% group projects, which was not ideal. I found myself lost in his disorganized lectures
Brother Lenhart is one of a kind. He really knows his stuff but is often hard to follow during lectures. The grading criteria is not always super clear and the assignments are a little fuzzy. He is a good teacher but his teaching style did not go with how y brain learns. I like order, and this class was tangents upon tangents and confusing
Absolutely terrible do not take unless you like to be highly confused the entire semester. By far the most disorganized class i've ever taken, he'll start class by showing us a random video then start talking about the previous class for upwards of 30 minutes and this is an hour class. Syllabus does not help at all and he doesn't follow it.
Professor Lenhart is very nice but way disorganized. He rarely uses canvas, grades at the last minute, and assigns random group projects that don't apply to the class. He put off the quizzes he wanted us to take until the final so we had so much work during finals. If you take a class from him prepare to be bored and frustrated.
Great guy who really works hard. I think that anything wrong with this class is genuinely not the fault of Brother Lenhart. His recaps are egregious, I will say that. However, I found myself learning from books that are available at the library on campus and the lectures he gave supplemented them well. Speedy speaker. Grades exceptionally fairly.
He is a beloved child of God, but he is a pretty mediocre professor. You spend the first half of class talking about garbage. Then you have a prayer and recap from last week which takes another 15 minutes then you have about 15 minutes to go over the material for the day. Everything you learn comes from the textbook. You are paying to be his friend
I like Brother Lenhart as a person he seems nice and like a funny guy. As a professor, he fails to teach. The syllabus is confusing and what you need to do for grades is unclear. I was hospitalized and could not attendclass or talk to any of my professors. My family emailed every professor that I had that semester but Lenhart did not reach back out
The class is extremely disorganized. Most of the assignments are in the syllabus with due dates that are sometimes from previous semesters. The lectures are full of tangents and the lesson doesn't usually start until the last 15 minutes of class. The professor also interrupts the students constantly when they answer questions. Very hard to follow.
He is a good teacher and the books given to read are actually very captivating which was great because Im not big on reading. That being said there is a bit of reading to be done so start reading the assigned chapters early.
This was the worst course and professor I have ever had, with graduation only one semester away. Lenhart lacks all organization and clarity in instructions, is incredibly difficult to work with, and leaves you to your own more often than not. This course presents virtually no information when taught by him. Take literally any other professor.
Bro Lenhart is a nice guy. He typically dominates the classroom time with lecture and leaves little room for questions. He spends way too much time at the beginning of class talking about irrelevant topics, especially his strong detest for the orange man that used to be POTUS. He didn't seem to care much about BYUI's political neutrality policy.
I did not like having him as a professor. He usually talked about whatever he thought was interesting, not what the class was actually about. He was constantly bringing his political opinions into the conversation and was very rude about the opposing side and their opinions. He is very knowledgable but I didn't think he was very respectful.
Did not like having him as a professor. He was blunt and rude to opinions that were different than his.
Professor Lenhart lacks any organization with regard to using canvas. He also teaches recent events as facts when they're just his opinions. I never had a single class period where he didn't rant about how he hates Donald Trump. Every class period he'll spend at least 10 minutes raising up democrat presidents and putting down republican presidents.
Lectures on and on in class and wastes time and then runs out of time to get the things that need to get done. He doesn't explain assignments well or in a timely manner to give you enough time to finish the assignment well. He announced a 30-page group paper with one week to complete it on top of other assignments in the last two weeks of school.
No one paid attention in this class. You have no idea what you are suppose to do for homework. He just went over a group paper that we have to get done by next week and it will be about 30 pages and an exam by Saturday. We also have a final with almost one week left of the semester.
If you are good at learning by reading textbooks, then sure, take this class, but if you want an engaging class that makes sense and has a clear sense of where things are going, so not take this class.
I have never had a more opinionated professor. Professor Lenhart used the class as a way to teach life lessons he felt were important, but he DID NOT teach the events. There was also very little to no organization on canvas or in class. Be prepared to teach yourself what he thinks the answers should be.
This professor will rant for 40 minutes about how bad and evil Trump and Tucker Carlson are every day. Other common rants are about how great a big government is. To be clear 80% of the rants are not related to the content and all of them go way longer than they need to go. Also WILL NOT TELL YOU WHEN STUFF IS DO.
His classes are disorganised and very opinionated. He teaches his own opinions as fact and is very politically opinionated. His canvas is a mess and he WON"T tell you when things are due. His study guides don't match up with the exams. He will not respond to emails, and won't praise students for their successes
Brother Lenhart is the worst professor I have ever taken. He "lectures" everyday sharing his opinions on topics unrelated to the course. We have never discussed a single major historical event related to the 20th century besides racism. The class has no structure support or relevant information. Avoid at all cost, waste of time money and effort.
Bless his heart but this man doesn't know how to teach. He also likes to rant on about the most random stuff including his political views on the US. Lesson plans are available through his syllabus. He doesn't teach the material. If you want a good grade in this class, do ALL of the assignments (assignments meaning every quiz and test he gives.)
He is opinionated about particular topics, and won't touch on topics needed in the class. Everything you learn just gets re-taught the next class period, and sometimes you won't get to most of the lesson material. Only reason why I passed was because all his exams are open book, so there is no excuse to not do well. I'd avoid classes from him.
I do not recommend taking a class from Bro. Lenhart unless you want to teach yourself most of the material. He is very knowledgeable but will go on long tangents. He is not accessible outside of his office hours. You are mainly graded off of projects and exams, and he doesn't explain the assignments very well and the rubrics are also unclear.
This is the worst class I have ever taken. The whole class he just trashes on Donald Trump and thinks if you support him you are a threat to our country. It is an hour class, but does not start until 45 minutes in, leaving you with only 15 minutes of class time. And NOTHING that you learn in class is on the test, so be prepared to teach yourself.
Professor Lenhart is one of the best history professors at BYUI. Not only is he incredibly knowledgeable, but he has a talent for historical analysis and synthesis that is the result of both experience and wit. No other professor here presents such a unique analysis of history using both quantitative and philosophical means.
He is amazing. Extremely caring and passionate about what he is teaching.
DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS!!! The people saying this was a good professor are crazy. Assigned a 5 hundred page book on a Monday and said their would be 5 quizzes on it on Friday. He obsesses on denouncing President Trump and Republicans. Our classmates met outside of class to discuss if we wanted to collectively drop the class but kept with it.
Professor Lenhart is a good teacher for the Peace 101 class. every 3rd week you are assigned a reading that is actually really good. long but simple to read. You do quizzes by yourself and with your group. You never do anything outside of class with your group. I'm a first semester student and loved the class. Easy "A" class if you do the readings.
Horrible teacher. You will not get an A if you miss more than three classes. He rants the whole time and does not teach the materials. He gets to class topics five minutes before the end of class.
This professor is all over the place and really doesnt have much structure. We didnt have many assignments through out the semester, but for the las few weeks he piled on quite a few.
I'm sure he has many good qualities. Being a professor is not one of them. I can not express enough that his canvas is terrible. You will not be able to find any due dates, instructions, or grades. The semester has 6 days left right now, and I have zero idea what my grade is. The dude also loves to insert his own opinions. Didn't learn anything.
Professor Lenhart's class was challenging, but using resources like the textbook and unstuck study helped me stay on top of the material. Though opinionated, the lectures were thought-provoking if you engaged with them. Overall, it was a decent class.
Very knowledgeable man on history. Most of his lectures seem to be scattered with tangents leading to a lot of repetition. There isn't a lot of homework for this class but there is a lot of extra credit opportunities. He injects his personal political opinions in quite a bit. Do some reading on your own and do all the homework and the class is easy
