Made me like history, best history teacher I ever had, I actually like learning.
I would take him again
No Comments
I think I learned a lot. He expect a lot. You fel like you earned your grade
I feel that he places his opinions on others, and that he is unfair in those.
I think he is a great teacher and GRCC is lucky to have him.

very clear about class, makes history interesting
Great teacher, Very informative. Tests are very difficult
He is hard, but fair. Has a unique approach to American History
I knew he was good when I had to tutor my girlfriend who goes to U of M
Very opinionated..I feel he condemns America a little too often..great speaker
I didn't always agree with him, but he made me think. Most classes didn't.
He loves his subject. I love listening to his lectures, they're interesting.
Mr. Light helped me to learn a subject I didn't think I could.
Great Prof and easy on the eyes (if you know what I mean)
He is interesting. You need to take notes, he doesn't use text as much
Class is hard at first. But he is very interesting to listen to.
His lectures made US history interesting. Need I say more?
Excellent teacher, definitely take this class. Loved his lectures!
he is the best college history teacher out there you must take his class
If he can keep me interested for three hours on a Wednesday night that says alot
He was very harsh in grading our tests, almost to the point of being unfair.
He's a genius. He uses no notes for class, and he really knows his stuff.
Good Teacher Knows His Stuff, But Tough Grader, Almost Unfair
One of the smartest people on campus! Great teacher. Study for his class!
I took the telecourse, just watched the videos, and still got and A. Very easy!
This was a great class
He is very understanding and his lectures are great!

Nice guy! helpful! GOOD prof.! kinda liberal, too politically correct...
Excellent Lecturer
What a blast this class was.
He will push his liberal ideas down your thoat, his lectures are above average
passionate, good lecture - homework bites a bit

Very sharp lectures. Really interesting class.
Awesom lectures! makes it very interesting. grades hard- all essay tests though
Always upbeat and willing to discuss. Good Class.
I would take him again. Interesting perspective on America
great lectures you learn tons, but tests make no sense and are very hard
Awesome teacher! Made me love history!!!
sweet lectures, great view on history, you don't want to skip one class!
Wonderful class and teacher. Impossible to sleep during lecture!!::)
EASY essay exams if you KNOW your stuff. INTELLIGENT&INTERESTING!!!
he's not only intelligent but also very attractive instructor.
Awesome class, very interesting lectures.
Good lectures, but assumes everyone knows the good things about America, so he seems to put alot of emphasis on the negative side of U.S. history. Easy homework.
He is so hot...I want him so bad...he makes me wanna quiver...grrr...
He is an alright teacher. He gets really mad sometimes about the stupidist things. His test are easy but the folders suck s*it. Hes an alright looking teacher maybe just needs to do a couple of situps than he would be ok. His lectures are ok.

He knows his stuff! Very interesting teacher. One of the best at GRCC.
By far my favorite instructor! He was very intersting and made the class enjoyable.
Mr Light was very helpful when I needed it. He even let me redo a paper that was not done to his standards. I had an early morning class, but was glad to be there, I could have listened to him talk all day. Very enthusiastic about the subject matter.
I loved Professor Light, he was interesting and made it very clear what was required for his tests. Speak up in his class and make comments, he loves that. Plus I love looking at him, what a hottie!! Yum.
I ENJOYED HIS CLASS SO MUCH I TOOK BOTH OF HIS HISTORY CLASSES
professor light is awesome. i would love to be in his class again. maybe i will. he is everything you want in a professor.
mr light is very clear and easy to understand, he puts a lot of effort in helping you understand and gives his opinions as well as listening to yours i've really enjoyed his class
I enjoyed his class so much I took all of his classes. He makes time fly and keeps you with him. Worth taking and easy on the eyes.
Great teacher. Besides Mr. Houser in the front the class would be cool but instead of listoning to Mr. Light we have to liston to some kid who thinks he knows everything about history.
I have nothing but love for this teacher! you can tell that he loves history. Be careful to pay attention sometimes because he likes to jump around on subject matters, but other than that he is kind and also a very good teacher, and that is hard to find.
mr light is one of the best teacher i have even had in GRCC. he is one of the best. take him and you will love him.
HE IS HOT!! I don't like history but his class made it somewhat interesting. You could tell that he really knew what he was talking about. I would strongly recommend taking his class.
Very intelligent and hot at the same time!
Best prof in the business! I enjoyed every minute in his class.
nice guy interesting class but learned absolutly nohting. Had three take home tests which you can just plagerize the entire thing you are not required to site anything. We were to complete multiple folders but only ended up doing three which were a joke
mr light is hot!! i know it's weird to like him that way, but i can't help it. he is a very intelligent professor. i enjoyed his class a lot!
Bit biased. Ya better believe what he believes or you're headed for trouble. Swears a lot as a cheap trick to get students attention. BUT, all in all, great guy! Very nice and understanding. Extremely intelligent (and opinionated). Really cares about his
really good teacher need to know your essay stuff other than that he is a cool teacher
great teacher, has great comparisons of our govt in the past to our govt now.
He is very clear when presenting you with the information you need for notes. Takes time to explain anything that needs questioned. He seems like a great guy all around. I would definitely recommend him.
Mr. Light is a very excellent teacher. He has a passion for history and it shows. He does his best to be clear and precise when presenting information. He makes the class very fun and informative. Very highly reccomended.
he is an excellent teacher, the class went by so fast. one thing i didn't like is that he doesn't like to talk about wars, but otherwise he's the man if your taking a history class
Straight A in the class... with hardly any effort just do the folders and study your essays and go to class, the 5 bonus points are golden. Offers EC
Quite possible the best professor I've ever had. The man is brilliant and never puts down anyone else's views. He always takes a moment to consider them and compare them to his own to see if he's made a mistake. Very admirerable
Great teacher
Mr. Light has good, strong, fact-based opinions that he isn't afraid to share. I would prefer if he taught the info a little more in-depth (b/c i'm majoring in History), but overall a nice, intelligent, easy to follow professor. Take him and pay attention.
he is ok
Another OUTSTANDING professor. Very interesting lecturer and light homework load...however, you cannot pass this class without paying attention and studying for the tests. Takes genuine interest in the success of his students. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!
He knows his history
Pros: He made me interested in history again. Great guy, very liberal, interesting lectures, doesn't give much homework. More than any other prof I've had at grcc, he seems to genuinely care about his students. Cons: Too much emphasis on essay questions, seems to deduct essay points arbitrarily.
I would marry Professor Light tomorrow if he asked me.
This teacher was awesome. I NEVER liked history until I had Light. He was very understanding about his topics. I learned a lot, and he is a very good teacher. So, if you got to take history. Take it with him. And girls he is a hot!
Mr. Light is an amazing teacher he doesn't care about dates or times he wants you to know the significance behind specific moments in time. Great teacher, gives you plenty of chances to bring up your grade, passed with an A. Make sure you do the document studies before the tests they count for a lot.
I thought he was one of the best profs that I've had while I've been at CC. He cares about his students and knows his subject very well. He's also very flexible and willing to work with you. I would definitly recommend having him for a class.
Alot of knowledge. Smart guy. He's not afraid to speak his opinion...if you're ultra-conservative, don't take it to heart if he mixes his liberal opinion in with his lectures.
Brillant man, loves his job and it shows. Passed with an A, take advantage of extra credit opportunities! Well developed essay writing skills will help you greatly.
As a future History teacher, I can only hope that I am able to show the relevance of the past to the present as well as Mr. Light does. He has great passion for life and history, and seems like a all around good person. Very intelligent, open-minded, and willing to make you think. take him fo sho!
good sense of humor
Awesome teacher with great passion, good examples and easy tests. He thoroughly goes into subjects and has great knowledge of the materials, great sense of humor and great stories.
Best history teacher I have ever had. Very interesting and very eye opening. Come to GVSU so I can take more of your classes.
Prof. Light touches on potentially volatile topics with a moderately unbiased style. When he is opinionated, he remains at least partially open. His method is engaging and helpful, and his personal involvement in the subjects he covers is extremely refreshing.
Best Prof to date
This class was on-line over the summer, and it was still fun, easy, and cool. I was dreading taking history, but I'm glad that I took it with him. Definately go to orientation...the man is HOT!
Awesome teacher, for an exam you get a study guide that is identical to it. And the work is easy to do and doesn't take a lot of time.
Good teacher who loves his ideas (opinionated). Could be and easy A if he likes you - gotta raise your hand and talk in class and he'll grade your essay's better. I recommend him.
Wonderful teacher, passionate about what he's teaching and it makes a big difference. History was boring for me until this class, I really did learn a lot and also--getting a grade wasn't too difficult either.
He's a good teacher. I hate his tests though. They are all essay questions. Other than that I have no complaints.
Very opinionated teaching style. Definitely will make you think about what you believe about history and why. Participate, and put forth a little effort, and you'll do well.
He takes you into the deeper part of American History, the parts that show what truly happened. He expects a lot on his tests and it's tough to keep up with taking notes, but he knows what he's talking about.
GREAT
Fun online course. No problems. Didn't need to memorize a lot of useless dates.
I agree with others who have rated Prof. Light; his lectures are great. However, be prepared to do a rediculous amount of busywork. Every exam is an essay, along with 30 pages of document studies and a website review. This would not be as bad if the writing helped in learning the material. It doesn't, though, so take another prof.
I learned the most about history taking his class. He is passionate about what he teaches. I was never interested in history until I took his class. He is a great teacher and I would recommend him to anyone.
Teacher is one of the best teachers I have had at GRCC. Does not give weekly homework but only four main projects. Projects are not hard but are time consuming. Love this teacher and changed my perspecive on American History.
Light is great. He is very respectful towards everyone and demands the same of you. Easy-just don't fall asleep! No homework-just the 4 projects, and NO the documents are not 30 pages long, and not too bad unless you procrastinate! Makes History interesting, funny, and not too bad to look at either! I would take him again in a second!
had prof light for immigration with Devivo. Good class. go to class, study the material and get a good grade. the more you ask questions and speak up in class, the better your grade will be. essay question exams. good luck
Everyone seems to like this teacher, but I found the class very difficult and not well structured. I respect Mr. Light's personal political opinions, but I don't think he needs to speak them. During class discussion he made me and others feel stupid. He would scold us for not getting A's on his insanely difficult tests. He was absent often.
Good Prof., he is hard but the class is simple as long as you take notes!
I cannot say whether or not Mr. Light is hot because my class is online. He's gotta be though .. it comes across in his typing. :) Anyway; I think he is awesome. All his test questions come right from the book so if you read the ch.'s as he tells you you will ace this class. He does not seem to make prejudice based on politics either. I had
Nice teacher, helpful, and not too difficult; if you read book you'll be FINE. Uses the non-bold vocab words on exams; such as people, things in italics, etc. ALSO - only thing I do not like about him - if you voice ANY type of political opinion whatsoever he will delete your posts and will CENSOR. Retarted as politics/history closely linked.
Pretty easy class. Took it online for transfer credit so the grade wasn't too important. Still a very easy class to pass. Essays sucked though, probably because they're not my strong suit though. However, Professor Light is another typical liberal professor; its obvious in his messages. Sure can get under your skin if you don't feel the same way.
i had him for history and i have to say i learned more in his class then i have in most classes i've taken at GRCC. the test are Essay based and he give out a study guide that is the same as the test and lets you use a cheat sheet for the test. he is not that tough on grading the essay, he just looks for details and facts from notes and readings fr
This is cool, but seriously he is a way cool prof I feel like he just gets it and has a gift at sharing it. So far so good, in the middle of my 1st semester.
I took the TELECOURSE class with this guy and it was really HARD! In the telecourse he gives you 4 tests and a large paper to do (9 pages roughly). Each test he gives you 25 terms and you have to pick 15 and describe them in detail and why they are important. It is very very hard to remember all those terms. Stay away from his telecourse!
He does play favorites, and he will tell you that. raise your hand, participate in class, and he will be much more lenient when it comes to grading your stuff. i know because i had him twice. and he is LIBERAL!!! read the text, participate, ask questions, and DO THE PRIMARY DOC REVIEWS and be able to cite examples on the exam. it's a fun class too.
Ok, my honest opinion of this guy is simple: You?re taking US History according to Light's world. Always find documents to support his opinions and you'll always get an A. Make sure you reference them in his essays to support his views on your answer. Sorry Sir, but there is always a formula to success.
Mike Light really has a gift for teaching history. He makes it interesting and engaging but only through his perspective though. Just do the Primary Documents and reference them in the essays and your golden
Its not a hard class except the fact that he grades you very thoroughly. He asks way to much of you for article reviews and his online exams are 2 1/2 hours long with 10 definitions (hard grading) and 2 essays that you will always get about an 80% on both no matter how much effort is put into them.
Dude totally rocks. He's so into America and stuff. I really liked this class.
Beware that a 400 point website review, ten 50 point document assignment, are assigned for this class. Exams take 2 ½ hours to complete, and be detailed as possible or the best grade you will get is a B. Mike Light doesn?t participate in discussion board topics, until after they are done, and for quick responses always email Light for questions.

I had him online. His tests are tough, just because no matter how many primary sources you include, you will never get 100%. He is really hard at grading. Same goes for the primary source assignments and the website review. I spent a whole class period trying to figure out what he wants because he never gave feedback. I did get an A though.
I loved this dude......He was helpful, easy to understand, and demanding. Best I have had at CC....
Interesting guy. Encourages participation but if you answer outside of his views, he may be condecending. Lectures are fairly enjoyable, but completly irrevelant to the subject matter. Frankly, he should be teaching sociology instead of history. If SO interests you, you will like him...
Great teacher, clear, and opinionated, knows his stuff and is well educated! Take any course he offers
Had prof for 249 online, so I can not say much for his lecture style. Was somewhat helpful with responding to emails, first exam I had a firefox crash and he was able to help me. Fair grader and really cant say if he is a stickler because I do not know what others peoples grades were like. But if you just participate, you will do fine.
Wondered why I received a grade on one of my assignments, he said he had no clue but he would get back to me. Never did so I asked if he could look at my next one so I wouldn't get the same thing I did the first time, he never looked at it or emailed me with suggestions. Then was gone for 2 weeks n didnt respond to any emails. Not a fan
Never responds to emails and doesnt offer any advice or suggestions when you ask questions. Will not give you full credit on anything regardless if you go above and beyond. Doesn't give any feedback on papers or test either.
Really cool online class. Not.atin of work and some cool discussion questions and linked lectures. It was a breeze to stay up on this class.
I did not think it was possible to make the Civil War sexy, but thus guy does it. His lectures are top shelf. I loved this class.
The guy is incompetent if you're taking his online classes. If he deigns to give feedback, it's so generic its useless. Very hard to communicate with.
Took his online class and I liked him for the most part. He organizes the class into units rather than weeks, so you can have 2-3 months to get everything in before the end of that unit. His grading was a little confusing, I couldn't tell why I would get points off on posts or papers and if asked he would respond kind of vaguely.
Best professor I've had at GRCC. He's passionate about history and his lectures are actually interesting. He's opinionated, but it makes the discussions better and he does like different opinions. It's not the easiest class but if you show you care and participate, this man will love you and you'll love him. First class I've been sad to see end.
Took for 249 and 250 online. Professor is a fair grader, and gives ample time to complete the assignments. The area where Professor Light seems to pay little concern is in feedback. Responded to 3 of my 6 emails, which is somewhat sad. If I took him in person, he would have ignored me asking him 6 questions in a four month semester? Alright Prof.
I took HS 249 and 250 online so I can't say much about his lecture style, most assignments are pretty easy. However, he requires an evaluation of HS websites (a useless 400 pts)and be prepared his test are difficult. He told me in the 1 email he responded to (out of 6) that no one is perfect and no one will get a perfect grade. So Good Luck!
This is a 7 week online class. He assigns entirely too much work. There is no feedback from tests. His grading is very hard to understand. The online discussions get out of hand. One person dominates the discussions because she has a degree in education and her husband teaches. He needs to monitor the discussion board more.
The class was online. It was a lot of work, but I knew that when I took a seven week class. I had some connection issues and he was really helpful. He sends out whole class feedback and I know that bugged some of my classmates. I liked the class a ton. Cool lecture links and not a ton of pressure to BS on multiple discussion boards.
Mr. light was a really great professor! I have no interest in history but he made it interesting and kept my attention. he was an overall great guy and easy to talk to. there are 3 main assignments and it may seem like a lot but if you work on them as you go you will be just fine! I wish i could take more classes with him! 5 stars!
Had him for online class. It was dIfferent because he breaks class into units and not weeks. I had some trouble with the first exam and went into to talk with him. He was awesome and super helpful. I would take him either online or lecture!
Seriously cool online class. Not a ton of busy work because everything is in Units and not weeks. I loved that. I had some trouble attending a lecture on campus and he gave me an alternative assignment. Course forced me to alter some serious long held assumptions about race and America. I would love to take his class in person! Come to Central
I had him online. I just scraped by with an A, but you have to work really hard if you want to do well. Tough grader, I never got 100% on anything. Really use primary source documents, go overboard on the discussion boards, and pre-define concepts/terms before tests to help you study/save yourself time on the tests. Writing skills will help a ton.
Don't take online course, it's best to take in class. Teacher doesn't participate online.
DO NOT TAKE ONLINE COURSE. This professor is the worst. He is not helpful and takes forever to grade & reply to emails. Assignments take forever and you have to post on discussion board a ton. Worst professor adn class I have taken at GRCC. DO NOT TAKE!!!!!!!
I had him for online classes. He would put grades in last minuite (like the rest of the GRCC teachers) and he would take forever to respond to a question. He would never tell you why he marked points off on an assignment.
This online class is not bad. It's an online class so it has different challenges than attending a lecture, but if you do the work (the primary documents, and post to discussion board) you will do fine. The tests are not difficult because everything is in the book, they just take forever. If you have to take this class, take it with him.
I took the online class. I had some problems registering with the online text portion and he was super helpful. I loved the lectures he posts and the discussion boards were not difficult. The textbook is your main source of info, but if you do the reading, this class is cool.
Online course was sweet. It was built around units, not weeks. That made it much easier to get the work completed. He does give super detailed whole class feedback on the exams and I think that drives some students crazy. It is pretty easy to compare his comments to the work you submit. I liked it.
Best teacher I've had so far. He's the one guy who actually knows what he's talking about, unlike many of the other professors at GRCC. If you're a sh*tty student looking to get the easiest class I wouldn't recommend him, but if you want to put a little work in, get an A, and actually take something away with you, he would be my first suggestion.
NO! Don't take this class if you want to do well. I give him credit in that he enjoys history. However he expects you to have "intimate knowledge" of everything. Hard exams, barely responds to e-mails and if he does the answers are confusing, grades once a month so you never know how you are doing in the class, and he contradicts his syllabus. Awful
I love American History, but I really hated this class. He is a nice & funny guy & his lectures can be enjoyable. But, he's so unorganized. We only got to WWII even though the class was reconstruction to present. He gave us the wrong date for a lecture we were required to attend & never added grades for extra credit assignments. Would NOT take
Great class, great professor! If you are afraid to work hard in a class, don't take his class. It isn't easy because all of the assignments are writing essays or discussion pieces, but if you read everything, you can be successful. This is not an easy A class, but it is worth it because it is so interesting!
This is by far the worst class I have ever taken. All instructions are incredibly unclear and confusing. I would NOT recommend this teacher. I'm a straight-A student and I currently have a C because I had no idea what to do for assignments and he didn't give us grades until halfway through the semester. Awful teacher, just awful.
Gotta say one of the most enthusiastic history teachers ever. Gotta stay on top of reading and only has five grades two are the exames and the other three are mini projects. He doesn't do an essay but instead a long project. Do NOT wait til the last minute or you will get a c or less. he gives you plenty of time and tells you about it day 1.
Ridiculously hard and expecting everyone to know everything about History. Takes forever to grade and is not very helpful. Takes forever to respond to anything. I am normally a grade A student but he expects so much from everyone. AWFUL.
I do not recommend him. He is not good at responding to emails or grading on time. You have to write a TON on a discussion board, do a stupid assignment, and an essay test for each section. I did not learn anything.
This is a really different course. Four units. It is true the tests are all essay which is why so many students think he is hard and it takes time to grade. But, I actually set up an appointment to go talk to him and he was super helpful. He even checked out my paper ahead of time. I would take him again
Not a very good professor. He did not have any online lectures. I literally read the book cover to cover and had no clue what I'd be tested on. I put in a TON of effort and still got a B+. If you're lazy and don't want to try, do not take his online course.
Worst professor I've ever had. Gives NO guidelines for assignments/tests, no lectures, tests over 4 chapters at once with NO study guide or help. Doesn't respond to questions via e-mail and doesn't have office hours unless you e-mail him first. I switched majors from history after how horrible my experience with this department head/professor was.
I never had any issues with this course. The guy was helpful to me when I had a problem attending an on campus lecture that was required. Mostly, I love the focus on the primary documents. He knows his stuff and if you follow the rules you win.
Mike Light was the most inspirational, hilarious, realistic, bold, and down to earth teacher I have ever experienced. He made learning about history actually interesting, and it was almost too hard to have to say goodbye after the last day. He's a great guy who very obviously loves his job and is thankful for being in the position he's in. 10/10.
He wasn't helpful whatsoever! Never replied to my emails! Never got the syllabus until 3 weeks into the course from another student! Not a good professor and very hard class. A lot of work.
The worst online class I have ever taken. He expects you to read his mind when it comes to instructions, gives you points off on assignments with no comments as to why. I got a 70% on an assignment because there were no instructions, emailed him explaining why I did poorly, and he assumed that I didn't know proper english. Didn't learn anything.
Not a good professor at all. I would not recommend.
Worst online class toe ever take because of him. He does not respond to emails and assigns ridiculous amounts of work with little to no response on grading.
Avoid. Avoid. Avoid. Course material was very disorganized. Way too much work. I felt like I was in a 9 credit grad class. Its history... online... shouldn't be a full time job.
This class was hard but fun. There isn't a ton of busy work and he expects improvement. I found the videos posted, his lectures in particular, to be really interesting. Good class if you are willing to read.
awesome teacher, doesnt show up for alot of classes which is great and he is hilarious. i never bought the book cause we never used it and he spends about 50/50 talking about slavery and the native americans. great class to take for anyone that hated history like i did.
Whatever you do, do not take his online course. I followed all his directions for the first week of assignments, and received a grade I did not expect. When I emailed him to ask what it was that I could improve on, his answer was he does not give perfect grades and failed to tell me the reason for my grade. No room for improvement.
Mike Light seems like an interesting guy on the online lectures. However, DO NOT TAKE HIS ONLINE CLASS! I took a seven week class during the summer for him, and I still have yet to encounter a more difficult or frustrating class. He didn't even give me full credit for my discussion board postings! Who does that????
His online classes are terrible. The man does not respond to emails, and when he does they are short and don't answer what you asked. The setup on Blackboard is poor (why do you need to look at 140+ posts to find the newest two?). Exams aren't terrible.
He obviously doesn't care about his online classes. He never responds to emails or phone calls. His online class is like not even having a professor because you can't contact him. His mentality for his online classes is: "Here's all the assignments. Good luck." Also, the Cengage program that he uses is terrible.
you get homework online that you are responsible for remembering to do it. He gives great lectures in class, they can get boring but they're never too bad. You get the chance to do extra credit which helps a lot. He is also very understanding when it comes to things outside of class. He's a very funny guy too. I recommend having him as a professor.
This class didn't really interest me. I am sure if I would have enjoyed history I would've done better in this class. He is a funny guy. For the midterm exam, he allowed you to fill a paper out and bring it to class and the final was a take-home exam so that was nice. I didn't like all of the online work as it just got tedious.
I took this class online and was petrified going into it. The reviews made it seem terrible. He gives you all the homework ahead of time. Work at a steady pace and don't procrastinateHe can see how much time you're logging in the software so the more often and longer you're logged in the better. Put effort and length into tests and discussions.
Very poor in every aspect. Very slow to respond if he ever does. Good subjects but you never hear from the teacher. Read the pages, take the test. Not an enjoyable environment. A lot of "less than really important" facts to memorize for a test, but little to allow you to discuss with others. Boring. Unhelpful.
One of the best Professors I have had by far. I would totally take his class again. To say he is insightful is an understatement. Really enjoyed the semester.
Only responded to half of my emails, and then only to half of the content of the email. Unclear grading criteria, no feedback on either homework or test submissions even when feedback has been requested. Failed to "teach" anything. Class involved reading the book, answering questions from book, and watching 2 movies from a list in text.
loved the class, would take any class from him. pass with a high grade even though i was bad at doing the online program. he's funny and i enjoyed every lecture and his use of movies. be ready to write papers for the midterm and exam. he makes you want to talk in class even if your really shy like i am. I used the writing lab on campus a lot!
Very vague syllabus, several key elements such as which chapters a unit covers are incorrect and left uncorrected, both on syllabus and BB. Decided to change the due date of the final on the las week and only sent an email, no announcement on BB. Only graded 2 assignments and an exam all semester, last 9 grades came in day before final grades due.
I learned a lot in this class. The content is good, but the overall workload is too much and exams, which were essays, were challenging. He was constantly messing things up on BB, such as due dates, and opening times for the exams. The syllabus was vague. I would take a class with him in person, because he's a nice and funny guy, but never online.
The class was described as "united states history: reconstruction-present", but it was actually a history of racial inequality of America. He collects all homework at midterms and finals, and it is a lot of work. Also he will literally yell at the class if they do not participate.
My mans Mike Light is the truth, I took this class online and it was easy beyond belief. You have a month to do a whole unit that will take you about 3 hours maybe in total to finish a unit. Would strongly recommend this class and professor. He not a hard grader at all, just do what is asked and you will get an A.
Great Professor ! Truly amazing lecture. Make sure you take a lot of notes to fly in exams.
Learned a lot from his African American History class. Wished I learned more. Nevertheless, very good prof. Good at breaking down concepts.
Do not take this class! Very unorganized, loses your submitted work, no feedback or grading scales. He couldnt even tell me what I missed points on my essays after asking him. Doesnt respond to emails. Cancels class half the time and plays videos for the half of the classes he actually shows up to. Doesnt teach the curriculum. Overall bad!
Mike Light is very passionate about African American History. This class changed my life and how I view the history of America. Pace yourself on the assigned questions. They are all due at the same time and you don't want to get behind. He will stay and talk after class but not many people took advantage of that. DO NOT fall asleep in class.
Course opened last minute, I spent 3 days trying to understand his syllabus. Instructions were not clear, online book is confusing, and Bb was not set up correctly. I've taken several online classes and this one was a hot mess! Didn't seem to make sense. The amt of work for an online class seemed insane and on your own. I dropped on day 4.
Professor Light was a great teacher, and made his grading criteria pretty clear for the most part. A lot of the class just consisted of him talking, which got boring at times, but it was also interesting at other times. I do recommend taking his class though! I'm taking his class again for HS 250 as well
Fun class but dont get behind on the hw
Loved this class. Awesome professor
WAY too much work for an online class. I do NOT recommend taking this class if you have other classes to focus on. The content is interesting, but most assignments were irrelevant. Homework is excessive & unclear; 1page/chapter responses on external sites. There's an exam every other week that consists of two essays you have to do within 3 hours.
This class is such an important course and it's unfortunate this man is allowed to "instruct" it. No participation from prof or respose to emails. Course is self guided. Read intense text. Watch his uploaded youtube prompts which may or may not connect to material, answer essay questions. Repeat. GRCC has really let it's standards slide.
terrific teacher with a great attitude on the history
he is the best and replies to emails so fast great family man can help you with history and life
It is week 2 or 3 of the semester and I'm just annoyed. The syllabus is detailed but at the same time too simple. I am hoping I am doing assignments correctly, as there is not much of an explanation on what the expectation is. The same assignment is explained 2 different ways throughout the syllabus.
His classes were okay and lot of notes. Homework portion was sometimes confusing and his grading was kinda tough.
Professor Light is very passionate about what he teaches and that shows in his lectures. He teaches with such passion it makes you excited for the class even if it is a harder subject.
Good teacher, he's very nice, the only test are 2 essays so pretty easy A. Just pay attention in class, not that much hw. Have to get the book.
The only thing I really didnt like about professor light was there was very few things that our grade was based on.
FYI:Same as Larry Light. I took the online history class, he was very bad at emailing back. I emailed him four times during the class and he didn't respond to any of them. A lot of reading, tests were in the form of an essay which he did not grade until after we had completed the next test, also did not give much feedback about past tests.
Mr. Light is an amazing teacher, loved his class! He is extremely passionate about what he teachers. The midterm and final were essays, which wasnt easy, but otherwise his class isnt very demanding. Just need to show up, pay attention, and take notes.
Would not recommend to anyone! This class was set up into Units, each unit having HW and Exam for a grade. Unit Grades wouldn't be put into the grade book until the week before the next unit exam, 3 weeks later! By then all your homework is done for the next unit and you are just receiving feedback from the last one! TERRIBLE and SO FRUSTRATING! :(
He was overall a very enjoyable professor to have. Clear grading criteria and a very manageable workload. His exams are 2 essay questions and he gives you individual and clear feedback of what he liked and how you could improve within a week of taking the exam. 10/10 would recommend him.
I am a true history buff (and history major) with an extensive knowledge of the time period covered in this class, and I would still not recommend taking this class with this professor. There are absolutely no clear expectations, it is way too much work, even for a 7 week course, AND you can CLEP test out of it. Take the CLEP and save yourself.
Possibly the worst teacher at GRCC. "Larry" will only have you do assignments from the textbook and will not teach a single thing over the course so if you expect someone to actually teach you look elsewhere. Don't even get me started on Mike's 3 essay exam system.
One of the best teachers I had. He is really passionate about what he teaches and he really cares about his students I would definitely take him again. Overall he is a great professor.
One of the worst professors I have ever had at GRCC. I took this class online because of COVID, he did not teach a single thing. It was split up into 4 homework heavy units that he takes a month to grade. He also posts youtube videos (that arent his own) that barely even relate to what we read about. No teaching done by him. Major liberal material.
The professor doesn't seem to grade papers. He seems to look over them haphazardly and give a grade somewhere within a certain range based on response length. He made the students create every assignment rather than give one to them. He had glowing reviews before the switch to online learning so maybe just don't take his class until its in person.
This class was extremely frustrating. He expected you to know exactly what to do with no clear grading requirements. You read a whole textbook and answer the questions at the end of each chapter. There are no lectures provided even though he takes points off of your homework and exams for not including information from them. Don't take this class.
Dont take this class. I read the book, studied hard, turned in all homework, and barely eeked out a B. He has arbitrary grading that does not depend on what you read or study. Exams are essay format but he severely limits your time. Then he grades incredibly tough and asks for plenty of sources. It makes no sense. Terrible professor.
Possibly my worst experience as a student to date. The point of a professor is to teach, but professor Light did not teach anything. "Grader" is a better descriptor here. Not one lecture of his own was posted during the entire semester. The class consisted of reading the book and answering the 5-ish included essay questions per chapter. Not for me.
He was extremely unprofessional, didn't respond to any of my emails until almost two weeks later. Also wouldn't work with me when I had technology issues, the class was online. He did the bare minimum for class work and relied heavily on what the book offered. Would not recommend Professor Light at all.
Loved this class. He is a fantastic lecturer and the Texas are essay but he gives you the prompts before the exams. Great prof
If you are trying to get in touch with him good luck. Not good at answering emails whatsoever, I emailed him multiple times over the same topic and never received a response. Hopefully you have no questions about the syllabus because you're on your own.
I took an online class with him and it was terrible. You can not contact him because he won't respond. I had to take one of the exams late, and it took him over a month and 17 emails to post the exam. I took the midterm and the final exam on the same day. He says that you need to email him for a way of contact but will not respond to emails. 0/10
To call him a professor is an overstatement. The videos he provides are helpful in synthesizing the content, but they aren't his. He provides no video lectures whatsoever and most (if not all) the course content needs to be learned by reading the book. All he does is grade the material. The "HW" is easy but time-consuming, and the exams were hard.
Halfway through HS160, I was thinking this was going to be an easy class. Although the homework is easy, the homework DOES NOT prepare you for the test. The only tests (the midterm and final) are questions that are expected to be answered in full, well-detailed essays; unless you can read his mind, you should get full credit for the test No rubric.
The online class I took with Mike Light was a joke. He didn't do one lecture of his own. There was no communication between classmates or even between him and the students. He basically just dumped the content online at the beginning of the semester, and we were expected to guess what exactly he was looking for. He did the bare minimum.
Amazing Professor, understood everything he taught and am legitimately confused by the negative reviews given about him
Amazing teacher, probably one of my top favorites. I could see why online would be difficult considering he does present a lot of information during lectures, I can only imagine online. He does give out a lot of homework but it's spread out fairly. His lectures are interesting and passionate! Would definitely recommend his class, especially hs251.
Professor Light was polite and responded to emails well. The coursework was also not too difficult, and he gives many resources such as documentaries about the topic you are on. However, this class was only graded on about six assignments, making for a narrow grading scale. The exams consisted of three essays with no rubric for what he expected.
I loved this class and Professor Light was amazing. 10/10 recommend!
He is a very slow grader but not difficult. He gives you multiple weeks to answer questions from the textbook.
If you are going to take this class online and have another option, take the other option. This class is composed of... 4-6 hours of random youtube history videos and 15-40 pages of primary historical source analysis- per unit. Personally, HW was around 3000 words per unit. Exams are written and MUST be long to receive a decent grade. Poor feedback
Little homework, and all exams (which were take home) were open note and info could be taken out of the textbook or off google. Textbook is not rly necessary, you can use google. He's clearly passionate about the subject. For being a white teacher for African American history class, he's incredibly unbiased and teaches it well.
Great professor!!! His online course is very easy to navigate and impossible to get stressed out. One thing I will say is he expects a lot more on the exams vs the homework answers. The homework answers you're good with just a sentence or two. But he is a very compassionate grader!
The professor was good and fair in grading, but the essay exams were a bit challenging. Overall, the class was easy, but if you are not good at writing essays, I would highly recommend avoiding this class.
Overall good professor with take home tests and little homework. Will help you out and work with you. Commit to being there and doing homework and you will be ok.
Professor Light's HS160 class was a mixed bag. The workload was manageable, with easy homework but challenging exams. While he wasn't the most engaging lecturer, the course materials and unstuckstudy AI tools helped fill the gaps. Overall, it's a decent class if you're willing to put in the effort.
Wonderful professor very helpful
Good professer with quick responds to emails and helpful if you just ask questions
Very understanding and helpful teacher. Great guy
He does not teach anything or give any feedback. All info comes from the book. 2 tests and 4 homework assignments and 2 discussion boards make up the entire class grade. To pass you must read the book and take careful notes. Tests are essays. Good luck.
Great guy and teacher. Very helpful and not demanding
Mike Light is a wonderful professor responses well to emails and is very helpful if you just ask or need it
Great guy loved this class
Manageable workload and great professor
Good professor and fair when it comes to grading and will help you if you just ask questions
Allows extra time with homework exams all essays. Super nice and chill guy fair with grading and will help you if needed.
Not a bad online class hes easy to get ahold of and talk to
Great class fun teacher and interesting stuff
I do not understand why people think hes bad he is nice helpful and understanding.
A good and easy online class but very helpful to all students.
This professer does use the book! Making an account on Yuzu for free is what I did and I just rented it. Most of the heavy work you gotta do is answer the questions at the end of the book and give a summary about it. He didn't comment or give any feedback on any of it for me. He was helpful for exam feedback. Doesn't respond to emails fast.
Not a bad for an online class and a good professor making it clear on what he expects
Pretty flexible teacher and willing to work with you. Not bad for an online class and not a harsh grader
I liked this teacher and I learned a lot from the class. However, there were only a few assignments and they were extremely long. I enjoyed his discussion boards but didn't like how we were only graded a few times. The class consisted of just reading the entire textbooks and taking notes as homework so it was a LOT of reading.
Professor Light responded to no emails, there was no rubric, he gave no feedback, and there were no lectures. The whole class is 4 modules with a discussion board and homework assignment each, then a mid term and a final all open note. Easy A but the lack of guidance was frustrating and I felt like I could've put in half the work for the same grade
I took the 7-week online class, the course was split into 4 modules and we had only 10 assignments for the entire semester (including exams and discussions.) All his assignments and tests are essay based and some of mine got up to 12 pages long so pace yourself! There was very little teacher interaction and grades got posted weeks after submission.
