Mike is a little bit spastic, but his there is a method to his madness. He is very clear, and is good at showing you potential road blocks you will run into. Most people don't like him because he expects something out of his students.
He's ok, pretty fair grader, and willing to help you out when needed.
When I walk into his office to ask for help, he almost placates me, and is quite condescending. All I asked for was a push in the right direction, he probably thought I was looking for free answers, but I just wanted an example. His tests are difficult. Show your work! He will give you credit!!
I had Mike a year ago and I hated him! His tests are extremely hard and he likes to give assignments that are not in the book. When I went to his office for extra help he be-littled me and made me feel terrible! Aviod this teacher like the PLAGUE!!
guy sucks-- does not help u during office hours and hates you if your not obsessed with math--dont take him
DO NOT TAKE FROM MIKE. Hard grader, unclear oh and if you help, yeah try again. Office hours? Doesn't have 'em. Use the math center he says. Don't even think about it, better off paying more money for the course at your 4 year.
Good teacher. Do the daily homework and you will be fine. He is willing to address any questions you have with the homework the next class which helps in understanding the material.
he's a funny teacher, can make stats interesting (or at least more so that anyone else I've met can)
Mike makes Statistics come alive. He is one of the most energetic and caring teachers I have ever had. He was very approachable and PATIENT with me during office hours and after class. His tests are challenging but he tells you what he expects. You aren't just a number in his class. Hands down the best math teacher I have had.
He's alright. I wouldn't say he suck. He's one of the good math teacher I have. Just do your homework daily and you'll do fine on the test. He's very loud and energietic, that's one thing I like about him. Just don't expect to slack off and fall behind because I promise you, you will be depressed.
Mike was a very hard teacher, I took four math classes at Inver Hills and his was the most difficult. I didn't feel he was very kind, he doesn't seem to care for the lower level math students very much.
I would encourage anybody to take Mike for statistics. He obviously enjoys what he is teaching and you can see it in the way he takes the time to deal with his students. Thanks to his extra time I was able to understand Minitab. He sures moves around a lot, but his material is very well organized and clear.
Marzinske was awesome. I really enjoyed his class. He is really devoted to the success of his students. I would take higher level math courses with him
Great Teacher!!
He is hard, but he will prepare you for the next class.
Great Teacher!
He is a good teacher, he goes really fast though.
Awesome Teacher! I really feel ready for for the next class.
Avoid taking 1127 with this teacher. You will be inunndated with pop quizzes and problem sets.He only answers about 3 questions a day in class on homework. He also grades fairly tough. I recommend taking the 1118 and 1119 sequence because the material is covered in more depth, and I hear the teachers are very helpful.Only class I've had less than A
Nice guy but very hard grader. Spent hours in the math lab and still got terrible marks on the quizes. If you are up for a challenge then take his course.
If you don't do the assignments, the quiz will be hard. so coming up with questions to make sure you understand become difficult though his presentations are great. they are really easy to understand, making the topics seem very easy till you get to the home. many still were not interested in the class, like myself.
Great teacher. You have to work in his class and he doesn't hand out free grades. Definitely a high energy guy who likes what he does. I feel he prepared me very well for calc.
He has high energy and you can see the true passion he has for math. He is almost always available to help you (as long as YOU have the time). However your grade is solely based upon quizzes and tests. The quizzes are usually just like the homework but the tests are often different than what you've been used to. --Plan on spending MANY hrs on hw
I had 1118 and 1119 with Marzinske (I recommend the two semester approach). He is energetic, often funny, and a challenge. Excellent instructor.
This instructor is high energy. But tests= 76% of your grade, quizzes 13%. Tests look NOTHING like the ?s in book but instead makes you think about what you've learned through new and strange problems. I spent ~16 hrs/wk studying for this 5cr class and got a C. Take if you want to learn. If you GPA can't afford a C then find new instructor/ class.
Very interesting. Mike keeps applying statistics in the real world. Tests get to be a bit long but if you pay attention to his reviews, you will know the types of questions that will be asked. The most enthusiastic instructor I have had.
Although attendance isn't required, you are fool if you don't go since he explains so much, gives pop quizzes, and does a SUPER job explaining the concepts. I have spent a lot of money at other "higher-profile" universities to take math classes and hands down, Mike is the best math teacher I have ever had. Take him, take him, take him!!
Good teacher! Take him!
This professor is really enthusiastic, full of life and energy when lecturing for the stats class. Compared to the other reviews, he is the WORST. He is a very picky grader, especially for Minitab Lab assignments. His tests are outrageous and he has very high standards. Currently, the class average for each assignment we did is a D. Don't take him.
AWESOME TEACHER!!!He made difficult math as Calculus easier, interesting and FUN =D. He's also very helpful & enthusiasm. It's really worth to take him. You will like MATH.
Ok; there's a lot of bluster about Mike on here. Let me break it down for you... If you come to class, take lots of notes, can think critically, actually have an interest in learning the subject, read the book, and work hard, you will learn a LOT in his class! But you definitely have to earn your A :) Great guy, funny and helpful when ?'d.
very difficult. homework does nothing for you for the test. test questions are out of this world
Amazing Professor! The material is very difficult but he makes it interesting and understandable. Would take him again just for fun!
Mike is the best professor I've had so far in 2 years of college. Calculus is a tough subject, and he does a fantastic job lecturing on it. He is also very organized, and sticks to his plan so you know what is expected of you and what to expect from him. Sometimes his problem sets are pretty difficult, but overall he's fair. Take him.
I highly dislike mike, not only is he a really hard teacher, but he got the best math teacher at inver hills fired recently. Mike said that the other teacher apparently had too high of a passing rate. Don't ever take him.
I would highly recommend taking Mike, he is an awesome math teacher!! his online homework and take home assignments are a lot harder than the quizes and exams. Very enthusiatic about math,I actually enjoy math!!!
If math is not your subject this is not the teacher for you. He seemed to cover everything very fast. Within a month half the class had dropped. It was a very difficult class.
Awesome teacher. He challenged me and I was glad I took this class right after I finished Intermediate Algebra as Mike tied together everything that we learned in that class. Funny guy and made the two hour classes fly by. Everybody is right when they say he moves around a lot, but he obviously loves his subject! Be ready to work in his class.
Yea...Mike's a right brained teacher. He wants you to see the big picture, to see how the equation fits into the larger world. That's great, but his tests (which comprise all of your grade) are not big picture tests. They're typical math tests, and they look nothing, nothing like his quizzes, homework or lectures. Good luck with him.
One of the hardest teachers I've ever had. Doesn't give many examples. Expects you to be able to take what he teaches to "the next level" on assignments without explaining how to. Get ready to teach yourself if you're taking him. He also has very unrealistic expectations when it comes to grading. Take stat's with anyone else and you'll be fine.
I had Mike for statistics and learned a TON. He obviously enjoys what he teaches and was ALWAYS around and even willing to come out to the computers and help with Minitab. You will have to work to earn your grade. I've heard that he is too picky, but he stated many times that this is why statistics are so abused in the real world.
Took the online course. Just stick to the assignments and you'll do fine. His tests are rather hard, but just take your time on them. Had to go to campus for 3 tests. He was always willing to help. This course will eat up a lot of your time. All homework and quizzes were online. Quizzes were best out of 3 attempts.
He often goes on long side rants that have little to do with the subject, and he doesn't always explain everything clearly. If you have ADD/ADHD, then you'll probably have to figure a lot of the material out yourself while doing the homework. But his assignments and tests are fairly easy and straightforward.
doesn't explain much just thinks you should be able to get it right away. test doesn't match homework
Quite hard to understand in class, but if you go ask him questions after class, he will be very informative and helpful.
Mike is a fun guy, but hard teacher. Especially if you have the class only twice a week like I did. About half the class (total of about 38 students) ended up dropping/ withdrawing from the course because of bad grades. Confusing ans expects you to teach yourself.
He's a tough professor, but you will earn the grade if you dedicate time and effort!
The class is very easy if you understand the material and pay attention in class. Some of the online quizzes and assignments are lengthy, but overall it is a very good and useful class!
TOUGH class! Learned everything I will ever need statistics for in the first 3 weeks. Teacher is very helpful with book questions but not so helpful in finding shortcuts and/or ways to use calculator to find the answers--in fact, on tests you need to show your work completely so if you've learned to get an answer with a calculator it's useless.
two words. THE WORST. If math is not your subject, DO NOT TAKE HIM. he's way too fast and once 2-3 people understand the material, he does not care if the others do... i sat in front but i always felt like i was never in class. NOT RECOMMENDED..
Mike was an awesome professor! It was a challenging course, but after putting time and effort you'll do good!
He doesn't care about his student. when I ask a question, makes me feel like I should know everything. :(
He refuses to answer questions that he feels you should 'just know'. Homework is on paper and he will grade your first try. If you don't follow his way of 'paperwork' you will lose points, meaning always show all of your work, and EXTREMELY neatly.
Mr. Marzinske is an exceptional instructor. It is obvious that he loves teaching math! I greatly appreciated his practicality and ability to explain topics in a clear, incisive manner. He is, by no means, an easy professor, but he is no tyrant either. After taking two classes with Mike, I feel that I am very well prepared to tackle Calculus.
Enthusiastic. Chanllenging exams, but if you do the work and attend class, it is all there.
I worked my tail off, but I am very prepared for my calculus class. Mike was always available in his office although he was relocated the semester I took him.
Do not take him if math is not your subject!! He suddenly gives quizes in class with no advice, does scratch work on board, he expects you to know everything. Since the first day he gives you homework and puts deadlines on fridays which is not good if you are not on campus. Only have 3 attempts for each problem online and 1 for quizes!!!
Feels the need to yell in lecture, if you have this professor be ready to have a headache after every single class period.
This should have been difficult considering I took pre-calc in high school & passed with a high B. I am fairly good at math & struggled greatly with this course. The material is not hard--it's how he teaches it. Pop quizzes nearly every week, your grade is basically composed of 4 tests 100pts each. Class avg test scores were between 58%-69%. Awful.
Moves at an incredibly fast pace, lectures almost always go 5-10 minutes long, has an extremely loud voice, expect weekly projects, class average for the tests were always around 60-70%, gives pop quizzes, one of the most difficult teachers I have ever dealt with, online homework answers on mystatlab are often wrong.
Mike will make you work for the class. If you put in the time and complete the work you will do fine. You better get used to explaining why things work. Mike was very energetic. I always had class during his posted office hours, but no problem since he was always around and welcomed questions at other times. Thanks for all the help!!
I walked out of that class everyday with a headache, because he literally shouts at all times. All I kept thinking was "this is a tiny classroom, everyone can hear you, calm down please!" He's also kind of mean? Whenever I asked for help he always answered in a sarcastic "you should know this" kind of way. I used to love math until I took his class
Extremely energetic guy who is very willing to help but don't expect a straight answer. Makes you work for a good grade and he moves super fast so hold tight.
Mike has a very fast pace - if you miss a class or two, you have missed a lot. He has lots of energy, and is definitely passionate about math. Do not skip classes, as you never know when he will do a quiz. He is always willing to help, and actually encourages students to seek his assistance when they are stuck.
I decided to take College Algebra 1 with him even after reading all the negative reviews he had. He will not take the time to help you understand lecture content so expect to find and answer your own questions because he will not help. Test content does not correlate with quiz and homework content. I strongly consider listening to previous reviews.
Mike is an intense guy. I liked his class but I had to work real hard (advance reading) to keep up with him. He provides un-graded MyMathLab homework and assigns take-home exercises that he makes himself. I appreciate his grading style which focuses on assessing your understanding of the concepts instead of just the correct solution.
Had this professor for my Calc. 2 class.. Worst mistake ever! Would give us notes to print out on his website, during class he would skip some of them because they were too hard. Most quizzes and exams were nothing like the homework and pre-test he would give.
I'm a PSEO student and decided to take the easier route of college algebra instead of Pre-Calc. luckily I can drop later than most students. The review for the class was expected to be really difficult, which it was. When I came back the tuesday of the second week, at least half of the class had dropped. I was told by Mary to avoid Mike for future.
Worst professor I've ever had. The class is so hard and I spent 15 hours a week on it. I'm taking it online and we had to go in for 3 tests and they were all very hard and he takes a ton of points off for the tiniest mistake. His video lectures are soooo boring and long. He doesn't like when you email him directly and is not helpful atall
I am a PSEO student and had to take statistics for graduation this year. This class is very difficult and I worked really hard for a C, but Im also not a math person. There is a lot of online homework and a Minitab assignment always given out every two weeks or so, some take hours to complete. Mike is very loud and expressive, but good instructor.
He has such a presence when he teaches that it is hard to NOT pay attention. He makes classes so much more enjoyable. He's my favorite professor on campus despite me not enjoying math all that much. He has great study guides. IF YOU DON'T LEARN THE CONCEPTS BEHIND PROBLEMS YOU WILL FAIL. Don't think he is a plug and chug teacher. Learn why, not how
Mike is an awesome teacher. You get so much out of this class. Its challenging but as long as you put in time you should do well. Theres a lot of outside class work like weekly projects but he is easily accessible and ready to explain further
Fast passed and his test are hard. You learn a lot in his class but you will walk out being able to do things well and feeling knowledgeable
It's a tough class with lots of homework for sure, so if you don't have a set amount of time during the week to sit down and just do math for an hour or two, you're gonna have a bad time. But if you put the time and effort into it, you will learn the material, and I mean really learn it. Very energetic and passionate about making math relevant.
Took Intro to stats with Mr. Marzinski a few years ago at inver, Im now at metropolitan pursuing a finance degree and am so happy I took Stats With Mr. Marzinski. My program is stats heavy and he is by far one of the best teachers I could have taken stats with. You will learn how to use formulas and more importantly the concepts behind them.
Best math professor. If you actually want to learn math, and also enjoy it, please take Mike!
Marzinske gives lots of required hw that is difficult to handle unless you only do calc day in and day out. He is not a good lecturer at all. The tests are not difficult, but he does grade really tough with very vague feedback. If you deviate from his notation that is still valid expect a few points taken away.
Best math professor by far. The content is extremely difficult yes, but I feel he explains lots of examples throughly. He also allows LOTS of partial credit on tests even if your answer is wrong. You MUST show up though, one day consists of a lot of notes and examples that you will need!
amazing guy, you cannot skip class though or you will struggle immensely very old school learning style lecture do examples homework and next topic. if you don't learn that style you will struggle so be prepared.
My biggest issue is that on assignments, I did not feel like I got any specific feedback on what I did wrong. Some of his grading is inconsistent as well. My friend and I worked together on the same assignment since we were allowed to work in groups, but she still got a lower score than me, despite us literally turning in the same assignment.
Mike is an instructor who knows the material, but does not teach well. He is difficult to talk to outside of class, and is condescending to students. Most of the class becomes self-taught. I have been a math tutor for years, and although the material is very easy, it is over complicated with unnecessary software. the core material comes second.
My single favorite part of his classes were his jokes. He'd joke when the class looked confused, and after calc 2 in the spring, he joked that he indoctrinated us who had him for calc 1 and 2. That just showed me how great of a professor he is because much of that calc 1 class stayed for calc 2! He's the one professor that I've made sure to thank.
Great sense of humor, really tried to make it known that doing the homework correlates directly to better exam scores. Provides engaging lectures and knows the material well. Even someone like me who hates math was able to pass, which says a lot. Would recommend.
He was an okay professor for me, it took me a while to adjust to how he teaches the course. It was a fairly difficult course to the point where I almost never felt ready for the exams even after hours studying with in the math center with the tutors. The only thing that got me by in this class was spending all of my extra time with the tutors.
Overall good professor. You wont pass if you skip, but if you show up and pay attention, you'll do alright. I would have had a B if I hadn't missed so many sessions. Homework isn't that bad, and doesn't count for tons of points, but his grading on in class activities is a little ambiguous and he avoids giving out 100% on those anywhere he can.
