Not helpful at all. Tests are hard. Asks questions he doesn't really cover. Does not scale tests.
He is either going to have to curve or fail over half the class. Everyone is either making 90s or 30s. No grade distribution is bad... Test are hard and lecture is difficult to follow. He is a nice enough guy though.
He doesn't cover the same things he tests you on. He just assumes you can relate pH to pressure because he can. All around a bad experience and more of a headache than anyone needs to put up with. I have been studying hardcore and still might fail.
Stay away
Rude to students & doesn't understand our questions. He needs to be teaching upper level chemistry, not just chemistry 2.
sucks, i made 25, 33, some other F, AND no I am not dumb, he is just hard
He was a GOOD teacher. The examples in class were the same type that were on the test.
He is very hard. He assumes that you already knows a lot of things and skips over them. I would try to get a better teacher.
Not too hard of a class, but his lectures make stuff a lot more complicated than it has to be. You have to read to keep up in this class, but his tests are just like the practice tests.
He is the worst teacher ever. Every class we brought to his attention at least 3 errors he had made on his math problem, making us have to start all over.He is very unsocialable and very figity due to 2 very distracting disabilities he has. Very Hard!!
knowledgable about chemistry, however, lectures are lengthy and dry. Nice guy, but I don't think he has much of a social life.
He's a good teacher and cuts out a lot of the information from the book he doesn't think we need. If you're having trouble, he'll help you. Tests are like the practice tests.
He is one of my best teachers. He explains the material very clearly and well prepared. If you study, you can make an A without any problems. He also very helpful to make you understand.
AVOID AT ALL COST!!! This guy treats all his students like they are stupid for not already knowing all the topics covered. Extremely rude person. His frequently responds to questions by saying, “That has been extensively covered in class.” It usually
Very unclear, his writing is so illegible that what he puts on the board is useless. The practice test do not relate to material on the actual exam. He seems uncomfortable in large lectures. Should be teaching small graduate level classes not 1030.
he's alright really. i didnt have any chem experience and he lost me pretty easy. but if you good at chemistry he will be acceptable
I am good at Chemistry and he made my life a living hell for a semester. When I asked him a question he was rude to me. I would reccomd staying FAR FAR away from him. He does not prepare for his tests at all.
Horrible class. If you have not majored in chem. already this class will take more work than it is worth. The teach sucks at explaining what you need to learn and does not help you before tests. The only good thing is how much partial credit you get.
He is a good teacher and the tests are not very difficult as long as you study.
He is one of a good professor in Chemistry. I love him the way he teach us, make the chemistry looks so easy and so clear. You have to study and practice the problem set in order to get a good grade.
this guy sucked he was awful and failed more than half my class. i escaped with a d and was happy. avoid him.
The class was easy, but he hates when students ask questions. Recommend for some people who have some chemistry experience. The tests are pretty easy and come from the material covered in class.
Great teacher and extremely nice guy! He was always willing to work with me and help me on any problems that I had. As long as you study and work through the problems he assigns, you will done fine!
HE has to be the WORST teacher I HAVE EVER had!! He doesn't teach he jsut stands ath the board and works out problems and then he gets confused and then he wastes time and confusing the entire class. He is just MEAN and REALLY HARD!!
If you are a good chemistry student, you'll do fine. If you're not a good chemistry student you'll do fine if you study enough. This class is not an automatic A, but its an easy B if you put in the effort.
This man needs to retire!! He is so smart he cannot explain the material. He failed over half my class last semester. I took chem1040 again and got an A. So what does that say about Mr.McKee....ummm yeh just what i thought. He is a HORRIBLE professor.
He wasn't that bad... I got an A in there, but it didn't come without studying. He's helpful, but not always clear; sometimes, he would get a little dyslexic on our class, so it would be a tad bit confusing. All in all, a decent class.

nice guy and AMERICAN!!!! you will find very few frosh chem teachers who do anything else but work mostly problems during class so at least appreciate the english. make friends with this guy outside of class in his office and ask for help!
If you know some chemistry, you'll do fine. (A or B) If you know none, you will still do fine if you study. He teaches at a rapid pace but if you are a quick learner, he is not that bad at all. Just go to class and pay attention.
Hands down, chemistry is hard. He is a good teacher. If you don't understand what's in the lesson, just do the homework and ask him. He'll help and he is pretty flexible. I don't see how anyone could pass this class without doing the homework though, so you need the book.
Talks very condescendingly to those who ask questions in class. Poor communication skills. I am more than proficient in Chemistry and found him to be very difficult. Do all HW problems...
This professor is extremely hard! If you have him switch classes! He can't teach, doesn't help you, and acts like your stupid when you ask questions.
this class requires you to STUDY! however, he pulls a lot of questions from the homework so definately do it! This was a huge challenge for me and I barely made a C.
SO HARD! DO the HW as he assigns it. he pulls test questions straight from homework. he DOES GIVE plenty of bonus points! he gives a quiz before each test. the pts from it are all BONUS(can really improve your grade) Hardest class ever but something clicked for me at the end and i ended up with a B
HARD HARD! HE PULLS THE QUESTIONS FROM THE HOMEWORK! THAT CLASS IS HARD! TRY TO GET ANOTHER TEACHER
I had a hard time with this class, but I came out with an A. I'm not sure if it was due to curving or not, I never checked on my actual final grade. He has an office hour and is happy to answer questions. Your best bet is to study your notes and just use the book to work ALL the problems assigned, test questions are often the even ones.
THIS CLASS IS VERY HARD. If you want to work your but off...go ahead. DO NOT RELY on CURVING!! Sometimes it happens and sometimes it doesn't. There are only 2 good things about this class 1.The quizzes help and only count for bonus, so they don't hurt you. 2.You can turn your test back in for regrading. I would not sugeest this teacher overall.
He is a horrible teacher. His tests are very hard and his final is worse. He would yell at our class all the time if we did not answer questions he had, which he had not yet taught. I would get someone else.
I have never had trouble with chemistry but this man made it so hard. His test never seemed to be the material you would expect. I am warning you not to get him he is a bad teacher and his test are very difficult.
mckee is rude when he is asked a question in class. he confuses himself easily. do the homework to do well on the bonus quizzes - they can change everything. also he can be tricky on the tests, be careful. change teachers if you have a choice!!!
Run far far far away from here(him)!
All of my memories of Auburn thus far are great, except for Dr. McKee and his dreadful chem course. I have never had a worse time with a teaacher in my life! Stay far far away from him, unless you WANT to spend hours upon hours and days studying for tests and then still don't do good...save yourself now...drop him!!!!!!!!

I'm a Pre-Med straight A-B student, and I've never been happier to get a C in my life. Our class had approximately 5 A's, 1 B, 12 C's, 2 D's, and 10 F's. The tests are far from easy and the final was absolutely comprehensive! He did curve a little, not much, in the end. Avoid.
The class wasn't that bad...until tests came back. The tests were just too unpredictable, so you pretty much have to study EVERYTHING! Honestly, if studying isn't bad to you, he's alright. But, if you don't like to study and earn your grade, don't take him.
HARD!!!!! I've always made a B in chemistry...the only reason I made a C this time was because he scaled everyone's final grade!! Good luck!
Even though the class was the hardest one I've ever taken - APs included - and I made an F, Dr. McKee is still incredibly nice and easy to approach. If you have a problem, talk to him outside of class and he will be more than likely to help you. He's a really nice guy...He's just not that great a teacher.
Half the time he didnt even know what he was talking about. He works the problems in class extremely fast and he doesnt know how to explain things on a level that a student can understand.
this guy really sucks!!! get out his class if possible, do not i repeat do not get in his class!!!!!!!!!
tough teacher with tough tests. if you can help not takin his class do it. he is very fast with material and you have to do alot of reading
A nice teacher, does his best to help the class as a whole. Gives bonus quizzes to add as points ont he tests. Do well on the quizzes, and you will do well on the test.
Tough class, as many viewers of this page have already stated. Do all your homework and do it early. He frequently takes homework questions and puts them on the tests/quizes, including excercise samples throughout the chapter. This is a class where you do your own learning. If you aren't able to learn on your own, find another class. Good Luck.
He was pretty easy. Go to class. The examples he works in class are always similar to the oens on the tests. You do not have to do all of the homework he assigns (it's a lot). Just go to his review sessions, go to class (to get bonuses), work on the practice exams, and do some random hw problems.
Here is how this class works: Go to class, study the notes for the exam, and most definitely do every single homework problem assigned. Unfortunately, I figured this out half-way through the semester. If you honestly do the homework it will show, and it might surprise you. If you do not do the work assigned you will undoubtedly do poor.
he's a brilliant man, but doesn't know how to explain things to students. if you don't know the book and his notes cover to cover, you will do horribly.
He is horrible at explaining things, so class is pretty much pointless. You have to read the textbook and know equations and how to work all the sample probs in the book!! If you do that then you should do well in the class. His tests area all problem based, only a few concepts.
Dr. McKee is a chemistry genius. He just isn't a very good teacher. Definitely go to lecture as he gives quizzes and the points are used as extra credit on tests. Read the book only for what he talks about in class, but memorize formulas and do as many homework problems as possible. Not very helpful one-on-one so find a study partner.
I'm sure it all makes sense in his head but when he goes to teach, your on your own. Test are inconsistant meaning that you never know if its on one of the chapters or all of them that your are required to know. Take this professor at your own risk.
Brilliant man but unable to explain things clearly to students. He expects you to already know about everything he talks about, instead of actually "teaching." You won't learn much in class so I suggest reading the material beforehand so you already know some of what he's talking about. Do the problems and try to study with other people.
He is a great chemist and completely explains how to solve problems, but if you don't get it then won't get it. He teaches assuming that everyone took AP Chem in high school, and he can't seem to grasp that people may not understand the material. I enjoyed the class, but I could tell that many were left having no clue what was going on.
Michael McKee is the worst professor at Auburn University. He teaches as if every student has taken years and years of high level chemistry. He does not teach. He simply works problems out on the board from his notes. When a student asks a question about an example, he tells the student that he already explained it in a previous chapter.
WORST TEACHER EVER! He obviously loves chemistry and is very good at it but he is an absolutely miserable teacher. He just works problems the entire class. Not only is it boring, but very unhelpful unless you have read the chapters prior to class. The homework problems often appear on the test but he assigns ridiculous amounts of it. I failed
Tests were 80% mathematically based: typically 8 questions long, 6 of them being multistep word problems. Do all of the homework and don't come to class without having read the material beforehand. He is very smart and generally a nice man, but you will have to WORK.
By far the worst teacher I've ever had. I spent a completely ridiculous amount of time and did 90% of the assigned homework problems and still did terrible on the tests. If you pay attention to your homework though notice that he picks the problems from it that are short towards the end of the assignment. Don't expect to do well. He sucks. A lot.
Absolutely ridiculous.
Chemistry is like learning how to swim. This professor does not hold u in his hands. He teaches by pushing u in the water and let u swim and come back to him. However, if u r struggling u MUST ask for help. He will give his hands and pull u out of the H2O. Also, u cannot expect to swim well by practicing 2 days before the exam.
If you get this professor, drop the class. Not only is his teaching method a complete fail, his tests are ridiculous. It is not a surprise that the majority if the class made a D or lower.
Difficult class, but you can't expect to take a course for science majors without putting some work into it. Go to class, read the book for clarification, work the practice exams, and do the online assignments. It's a lot of material to pack into a semester, but it's manageable. Just make sure you buckle down right away so you don't fall behind.
This class is hard, and you have to get use to his teaching style. Definitely a nice guy, but going to office hours doesn't do that much.. Just go to class and stay on top of your work. You can get anywhere from a C-A if you stay on top of your work.
Horrible professor. Acts as if everyone has already taken years and years of chemistry in high school. His "Help Sessions" are a joke. Not very good at explaining how to work problems. It's a wonder he is still teaching. My advice to anyone who is unfortunate to have him is to get a tutor and study every night.
Dr. McKee is an alright teacher whose methods of explaining chemistry mainly involve doing problems on the board. To make a good grade in his class, be independent and work problems on your own and pay attention to OWL questions. His long tests consist of a short answer part and lots problems. A good chem background will help the most.
McKee clearly knows his subject very well. He would make a much better graduate professor. Even though I made a 5 on the AP chem exam, I was still occasionally lost in his class. When you ask him a valid question, the answer will only confuse you more. Avoid him if possible, but it's not the end of the world if you get him. Just work hard.
Gives review sessions before the test that aren't that helpful but if there's something that he mentioned could be on the test ask him specifically and examples he likes during the review and usually whatever he says is the one he puts on there. Also notice that the short book practice problems he will change the numbers and put some on the exams.
Great guy but not a good teacher! He teaches everything like you already know it. So if your not good at teaching your self, how to do things DO NOT take this class. He only does problems during the class with little clarity and only discusses key concepts briefly before moving on to the next topic. The tests cover a ton of information, study ahead
Literally, he might be the worst teacher I have ever had. Not only does he not teach but his "teaching methods" aren't learnable at all and the material that he tries to cover is completely absurd. AVOID HIM!!!!
AVOID!!! He does not teach, he is awful. AU needs to get rid of him because he is honestly awful. He expects too much out of freshmen students. Its crazy. HE IS A JOKE TEACHER. seriously don't take his class. You'll thank me.
Not a bad professor at all. Just pay attention in class. He gives review sessions and also puts up practice exams online. The majority of exam questions are FROM THE BOOK. Just work the book questions and you should be fine. The require homework was easy. Protip: Do not just do the online homework, it is really easy and does not prepare you well.
Very difficult. Tests are difficult, does NOT scale. Lectures really fast.
Good teacher. Just take notes and study them. Do online and work from book he suggests. Read the book before he lectures on it. If you did bad in his class you probably did not study well. This is a class for scientists and engineers so expect it to be tough. I would not recommend this class to someone who has not taken chemistry at all.
GET OUT NOW!! Awful class and teacher. He was extremely hard to work with and unwilling to listen to his students. Attendance is useless because all learning takes place on the OWL work. Be ready to teach yourself chemistry.
McKee is absolutely useless as an instructor unless you already know a lot about Chemistry. My friends & I had not taken Chemistry in a couple years, but we are all intelligent people who learn well. NOT in this class. It's like he assumed we'd all gotten 5's on the AP Chem test, and he can't explain ANYTHING well. Avoid him at all costs.
It's pretty straight forward, NOT. He's tough & assumes everyone's seen the material previously & confuses you more when you ask ?'s I did pretty well in chemistry in high school, but was lost occasionally in his class. I would recommend not skipping classes, doing both the online & the designated book work & reading the textbook for clarification.
SO BAD!!! DROP THIS CLASS NOW! I am very good at chem, but he makes this class impossible. he will give you the wrong formula on the test and does the problem wrong himself for the answer key, so even if your answer is right he will count it wrong. DOES NOT TEACH WELL AT ALL! he doesnt set up the equations right so you dont learn anything!
I do like Dr. McKee. With that being said, if you have no prior knowledge of chemistry, I would not take him. He does expect you to know the general basis of the class. The tests are not too agonizing. The material is harder than my high school AP class. Go to lectures, do OWL, read a little if unsure, study before tests, and you can pull out an A.
It's hard to get an A in this class. Read the chapters in advance and do all the assigned homework that you can. He teaches at a fast pace but does his best to help you when you have questions. I wouldn't take him unless you have prior chemistry knowledge.
I have a very high GPA.. but I BOMBED this class. His tests are impossible. I attended every class and every SI session and it didn't make a difference whatsoever. He is the worst teacher, even the SI leader couldn't follow what he did in class . I wouldn't recommend taking his class even if he is the only choice. Drop him while you can.
DO NOT TAKE DR. MCKEE! He was the worst professor I have ever had in my life. His tests are very hard. He does not know how to use ALEKS, the homework program for this chemistry. He is terrible at explaining his examples. He loves to take shortcuts and short hand everything. In doing so, he really confuses the class. DO NOT TAKE!!!!
I can say with no hyperbole that McKee is the worst professor I've ever had. He's a nice guy, but not an effective instructor. He runs around in front of a chalk board and follows no visible structure for his lectures, making it difficult to follow along and understand the material.
He repeats himself often, which leads to long lectures, but if you ask, he will help with any questions you have.
