He is an awesome teacher! Cares a lot about the environment, and uses the internet instead of a book!
he is cool as crap-real laid back-cares a ton about the environment. I would recomend this class-definately take it! He is a very respectable man!
Great teacher, cares about the environment, class is easy enough if you go to the review sessions. He will always help you if you need it.
McKinney is so cool!!! He is very passionate and extremely knowledgeable about the bettering of the enviornment. Extremely laid back. Has a wonderful energy about him.
He is a lot of fun and loves what he does. You do lot of community service hours (30) but they are really not that bad. His tests are hard but if you come to class and go to the review sessions you will do well.
He made us do 30 hours of service in the 5 weeks of summer! He does truly care about what he is teaching, and this is a rare thing at the univ. Any help you could need he is there for you anytime of the day, he even came out and did service with some of the class. If you think about droping the first day, don't do it you will like the class.
this guy is one of the best college professors I have ever had! the stuff that he taught me still crosses my mind, and I had his class like 2 yrs ago! this teacher is one of the very best, and if you get the chance, take one of his classes!- Mckinney is really awesome-
This class was awesome! He speaks really fast though so keep up, but he's so full of information and he really cares about what he teachers...i had him for the pollution and stuff class and he was very very passionate about it...hes awesome!
He is a great teacher. The things he teaches are applicable to our everyday lives, and he truly cares about what he is doing!
Hes great
Professor McKinney is so passionate about the environment and his field. And if you have difficulty grasping the subject matter, the service hours he offers count for twenty percent of your grade (if I'm remembering correctly) and help out a ton. His lectures are easy to understand and pretty concise. In a nut shell, he's great.
STOP GLOBAL WARMING!! He is awesome. Take this class!
McKinney is awesome... you have to do 30 service hours outside of class to make an A...but they are easy to get. His tests are all pretty easy as he tells you exactly what is going to be on it. you dont need the textbook, so dont waste your money
makes test to hard for the class and also you have to do an extremly lame amount of service hours.....would not recommend!
awesome, just awesome. extremely reasonable and rational guy.tells you during review exactly what will be on tests. i strongly reccommend taking this class is you feel like learning logically and simply about the environment.
Awesome teacher. I'm not a environmental freak or anything, but this class was very interesting, the service hours are a joke, and the test are extremely easy if you study for an hour or 2. Take McKinney for science classes, you wont regret it
Mckinney is pretty sweet. He gives you a good amount of service hours you have to complete but gives you TONS of opportunities to do them. Tests are somewhat hard and you definitely have to study but its geology so what do you expect.

Easy class... maybe too easy. You have to do service hours, which is pretty lame, but they come in handy for a resume! During review, he tells you exactly what is on the test. It makes the class too easy. Definitely gives the students a better understanding of how to take care of our world though.
Take his class.
McKinney is an amazing teacher! I hate sceince class but this Geology class has changed my life. His class is easy if you pay attention, study your notes, and do the service hours. He makes it fun and intresting. He even has class outside sometimes which is pretty cool, espically for a class of about 120 students.
Tets are really easy but i would recommend another class unless you are an environmental freak that wants to waste time on service hours
McKinney is great. The material is very interesting and relevant. Tests come mainly from lectures, and he helps you know what to study. The service hours aren't bad to get if you just don't wait until the end of the semester. Perfect class if you need a lab science.
I LOVED THIS CLASS. I wouldnt have rather taken it with anyone else. He was extremely clear on all of his lectures. Makes the environmental problems seem more understanding. I would definitely take another one if possible.
He's a great professor. The only reason I even signed up for this environmental class was because he is the one teaching it. He really cares about the environment and really knows what he is talking about I highly recommend this class, even if the environment is not important to you.
Very interesting class. I actually learned a lot of real world knowledge in his class. He's kind of scattered and very repetitive but overall a good course. For some reason he seemed to make the tests kind of difficult... And the 30 hours community service kind of BLOW!!
He was a wonderful professor. Very understanding and tried to help students as much as possible. Attendance was not mandatory but good to go. Interesting class and he does a review before every test. The only thing is you have to do 30 service hours but it is not that bad. I recommend this class. GREAT guy!!
McKinney is a good teacher. I had trouble in this class, but science is my worst subject. I liked him a lot though. He is really into what he teaches, which is good.
I took him for my first year studies class it was very interesting and he was very enthusiastic plus we got to have alot of field trips
fabulous teacher!! i had no idea what this class was about before the first day! he really cares for the earth & his students. the class is valuable for now & the future! he requires env. service hours but movies & fieldtrips count. he helps you when you need it,& has review sessions for the tests that aren't bad if you study. TAKE THIS CLASS!
Get ready to be recruited. This guy is a big environmentalist and is hoping to make you one too. At times his opinions are overbearing and he only presents his side of the story. Service hours are required for a good grade, which is a hassle if you've got a busy schedule. Tests are straight from notes which he posts online. Semi-decent teacher.
If you take this course in the Spring, there is a service op on the Cumberland trail. You will get 10 hours a day toward your 30. It is (very) hard work - but well worth it. The class was easy and the teacher reviews before tests. Take this class.
Such a nice guy! Before I had him I got so many recommendations from other students to take him. I also took him for geo 201 (Biodiversity: past, present, future), which is a really interesting class. SO EASY, GIVES YOU WHATS ON THE TEST, DOESNT TAKE ATTENDENCE EXCEPT FOR EXTRA CREDIT
Fun and interesting class (GEO 103) because McKinney is passionate about what he teaches and a super cool dude. You do have to study some for tests but he tells you what could be on it beforehand. Good choice for Science requirement!
He is great! Def. recommend for any geology class. Attend class regularly for the pop quiz points but the notes are easy and test reviews give you almost every answer to the tests.
I LOVE Dr. McKinney! He really is the epitome of what a professor SHOULD be! He teaches and absolutely loves what he does. Thus, making the class extremely enjoyable.
McKinney is awesome! He truly cares for the earth, and it makes you interested. He requires 30 hours of community service, which seems like alot, but he never assigns homework. Tests can be tough because you must remember numbers, but he reviews the test the day before, so just pay attention. Pop quizzes are attendance. TAKE HIM!
He's a great teacher and loves what he teaches. The exams can be kind of hard because they are fill in the blank and even the multiple choice answers are pretty specific. (One choice being 10, and another being 12.) It's for your best interest to go to class and write down everything he says. And get your service hours asap.
Mr. McKinney is a great teacher but he is sometimes unclear on specifics (ex. one day he'll say something is 30% and the next class he'll say 40%) He is passionate about what he teaches and is easy to get in touch with. His test are ridiculously hard with MC and FILL IN BLANK. 30 hours of service hours is required so if busy. do not take!!
Really enjoyed this class! Tests aren't too bad, but you have to pay attention to lectures and do the study questions in the book. Gives you a ton of options for service hours, just be sure to get them done early. He really cares about what he is teaching.
Professor McKinney is passionate about what he teaches. He will flat out tell you test questions during lecture so as long as you sit through lecture for about an hour, you can succeed. You have to do 30 service hours related to the environment, but they really aren't hard to get and if you get extra hours, they count as extra credit. Take him!
Composes tests off of his powerpoint slides which he gives you on Blackboard. 30 service hours required, but he gives many many EASY opportunities. You can get 20 just from definitions from the book. Sit through class for the random attendance and your golden. I have good study guides for 202 for sale. [email protected] Definately recommended
He loves what he teaches, which makes class alot easier to sit through. He always lets class out early, which is nice. He tells you exactly whats on the test, and gives more than enough opportunities for service hours. Highly recommend his class!
If you go to all the classes, study sessions, get all the service hours, and skim the book and power point slides, you will make an A. Lab is easy, points for attending class really help grade. Good guy.
He honestly cares about the class and each individual in it. He provides the powerpints online, gives MANY opportunities for service hours, doesn't require attendace/reading the book, although both help tremendously. You pretty much have to be VERY lazy or just plain dumb not to pass. He all but spoon feeds you everything you need to make an A.
prof mckinney is a pretty cool professor. he gives you course notes online, print them off and bring them to class to follow and by each slide write a few notes and facts he mentions in class and thats exactly what is on the test! service hours is mandatory for grade, so if you dont have time out of class to get service hours, dont take him.
He does random "field trips" around campus and mentions something that is on the test. Note that the service are are 17% of your grade (almost two tests) so if you don't have time to commit to the environment don't take this class. He voices his opinion all the time and it can get annoying if you don't agree with him.
The class is good if you're looking for something to get your lab science gen/ed. McKinney is ok. He likes the material, and is knowledgeable .The tests were hard and focused on minute things. He takes attendance, and does require service hours. Although bothersome, they help out your grade. My test average was a D, but I got a B in the class.
McKinney was a great teacher! He knows what he is talking about and likes for his students to get out and learn things hands on. It was a pretty easy class. Pay attention to the things he writes on the board and his little "factoids". I am taking him again he is so good.
Great teacher and one of the professors that get IT!! If you are not a Geology major, he teaches in real terms, day to day usefulness and wants you to get it hands on. Listen to lectures, take notes on his power points, do service hours and the class is easy and interesting...so much so I added as a second major.
I had no interest in environmental science BUT he made is relatable to our everyday lives and gave us actual useful information. Great teacher! He did make us do 30 hours of community service over the semester for a grade and that was annoying. He post all notes. Does random attendance checks. And reviews before the test.
He missed over half of the classes so he had a sub, and she was awful at explaining things so the majority of my class did pretty poor on tests. He reviews for tests, but whenever he promises that a certain fact will be on the test, it definitely won't be.
I took his restoring nature class for my FYS 129 and it was the easiest. You just have to go to every meeting and you'll ave an A. No outside grades but attendance. Field trips are cool, he'll take you to Ijams quarry and to the river. If the class is almost full don't do it though bc the van is small and cramped. Bad driver.
McKinney is my favorite professor I have taken at UT! Great guy and really cares. Lectures were interesting and he sometimes gives easy quizzes instead of attendance. Go to class and take good notes and the tests are easy. Seriously awesome class, great teacher, and not hard. MUST TAKE. Only catch is you might have to complete volunteer hrs...
Though I only took his FYS class, I would like to have him as a professor for any other class because he truly cares about his students.
Dr. McKinney is a great guy. I had him for my Environmental Sustainability freshman honors seminar. Really understanding and helpful. Definitely cares about the subject matter and the kids he teaches it to.
lectures are interesting if you are even remotely interested in the subject. He gives a bunch of assignments that are worth 30-50 points so if you don't do well on tests you will end up with a satisfactory grade (if you do the assignments well). The 30 service hours stinks, but he wants you to be involved in stuff outside of class.
Dr. McKinney is a very down to earth, cool guy. Lectures can get boring but he does post all of his Powerpoints. I'd advise going to his lectures because many of his test questions are random facts he states in class that aren't on the Powerpoints. Make sure that you have time to work in 30 environmental service hours. Shouldn't be too difficult.
Mr. McKinney is obviously passionate about what he teaches, but understands that a lot of people are there to get their science credit. He is helpful, clear, and gives direct test questions during class. He always gives review sessions and his lectures are interesting and effective. Would recommend him to everyone.
He obviously really cares about his students and the material. Requires 30 service hours, but lets you supplement them by watching documentariesbook report. Pretty easy tests, easy homework, randomly takes attendance, and labs are easy. He's a really great guy, and I enjoyed his class even though I'm not huge on the subject.
This was taken as a gen ed course, so I wasn't really looking forward to the class before taking it. If you are interested in environmental issues then you will love this course, but I personally found it very repetitive and boring. The 30 service hours are doable, but extremely difficult if you have any sort of job or weekend commitments.
Don't buy the book, you don't need it. The tests are hard but they are a lot easier if you go to his lectures. He literally gives you every answer on the board so what he writes down on the board write in your notes! Also go to the study sessions and you'll get an A. McKinney loves what he does and he's a great professor
Dr. McKinney is one of my favorite teachers of all time. He is one of those guys who makes you want to learn more. It was actually his course that helped me realize that I wanted to change my major to Environmental Sciences. If you need anything from him, I am sure he would gladly help you. The man is amazing.
Mike McKinney is a great professor with a real passion for his field. I only took his class to get a science credit out of the way, but left with a much deeper knowledge and care of the environment. If you show up and pay attention, the need for studying is minimal. I never made below an 85 on a test. No textbook required. He posts all lectures.
McKinney is probably one of the best professors I have had. He loves what he does and is very passionate. You have service hours you have to do but he gives you so many opportunities and it is fun. The tests are kind of hard but if you do everything else then youre fine.
Dr. McKinney is an incredible person, professionally and personally. He can be a little scattered brained, but who wouldn't with all the projects he takes on. If you are interested in anything environmental, or ecological, Dr. McKinney has something to teach you. I would suggest him to any student interested in environmental issues.
Dr. McKinney is easily one of the best professors at UTK. He's more knowledgeable about earth sciences than anyone I've met throughout my education and he is eager to pass that knowledge and excitement about the earth on to others. Definitely recommend you take any class that he teaches.
Professor McKinney was awesome. Not really into science but he made the class interesting and easy.
McKinney is awesome. He is incredibly knowledgable when it comes to environmental science and sustainability, but he's super laid back about it. He's all about service hours, which I think is awesome, but if you take any of his classes be ready to do service stuff. McKinney is the reason I'm going into this field of study! Take him!!
You have to have 30 hours of environmental service work for an A, which is a large chunk of the grade. If the hours were fewer, I would have given him a higher rating. If you turn the homework in, he gives you a 100. There are 3 tests, which are not extremely hard, but study. He moves through his lectures really fast so be prepared for that.
Great person! Really sweet guy who's passionate about what he's teaching. GEOL103 is an easy lab science to fill a requirement. Tests aren't too hard, he gives a lot of answers in his review sessions. Had the lecture till 3:25 on TR and he never kept us past 3. Lab never takes the full 2 hrs. Very understanding. 30 service hrs for an A is only con.
Dr. McKinney is one of the best professors I have had thus far at UT Knoxville and gave me a lot of advise for internships and jobs. He is a wonderful human being and is passionate about the environment. Can be scatterbrained but so am I he has a lot on his plate. Solid choice for a professor and will take him again.
Dr. McKinney is a great professor and if you ever get the chance to take a class with him, I highly recommend it. He is interesting and knowledgable in so many different fields.
McKinney is a nice guy and knows what he's talking about. You have to get 30 hours of environmental community service which is a large portion of your grade; it's rather difficult if you don't have a lot of free time. He also often emails out very large assignments over the weekend, not on the syllabus. Not super hard, but also not an easy A.
Dr. MicKinney is a great professor that really knows what he is talking about. His class is very organized and expectations are clear. His tests can be challenging but you can still make an A in the class. 30 hr+ of community service is the main challenge of the class but he gives a ton of opportunities.
Decent class and course material, but way too much outside work for a 100 level class. Assignments are weekly, multiple parts, and take hours at times. He also requires 30+ hours of environmental community service, which is hard on top of other classes, assignments, lectures, and exams. Overall, obviously passionate about the course, but not fun
Amazing professor, genuinely cares about each and every student. If you put in minimal effort, you will get an A in this class. The tests are comically easy if you study at all (yet the average is somehow in the 70s or 80s???). The 30 hours of community service is not bad if you get started early.
Dr. McKinney is so kind and helpful. I took his class online, and he always gave feedback on assignments. I have also met with him in person, and he has been very helpful in finding internship opportunities. We had 20 service hours for the online class. I would definitely recommend him!
Dr. McKinney was very clear about what he wanted from students. He's really passionate about what he teaches and made it interesting. If you came to class he even offered answers to exam questions. The exams were also pretty easy. If you put in a little effort you'll do well.
I took UNHO101 with McKinney. This class is MADE to be easy, so it was an easy A. McKinney is such a caring, passionate, and considerate guy. I don't know one person who disapproves of him. I have heard great things about his Geology class, as well. McKinney is definitely someone you want to know at UT.
Homework can be completed in a few hours. Extra credit available through community service. Nice guy, cares about the environment and pretty funny. Tests don't make a lot of sense-much more random facts than knowing the processes of things. Have a good memory
He doesn't take attendance, but there are in-class quizzes you can work with people around you. He is funny and very passionate about what he teaches, you want to be there to hear what he says. He is very quick-moving but still makes sure everyone understands. Weekly homework assignments and exams are fairly easy, if you study.
Mike is the best science teacher at UT! His lectures are actually interesting for someone who just needed the science credit. He lets his lectures out early most of the time. Homework is long but manageable.
You have once a week assignments but they do not take more than an hour. You also have one presentation with a partner in the class but it is very laid back. He is a really great teacher and requires you to have volunteer hours and participation. Overall I would take this class again.
Would give daily 5 point quizzes for attendance. Would not consider it to be required though. McKinney is a great professor. Nearly everyone likes him. Highly recommend taking him. Tests are open-note. You can also tell he genuinely cares about what he teaches.
Probably more passionate about his field than anyone else I know, and it's a massive field. This guy has like 5 degrees across the natural sciences and he's been teaching for like a million years. He makes an effort to learn as many names as he can in like a 200 person lecture. Exams are easy, and there's only like 10 homework assignments.
Moves through the slides fast and the information for the test is not in it.
Not much work, 1 assignment a week maximum (normally includes a few questions from the book and a video). Open note exams, not very many of them.
Super awesome dude, you can use the slides on his test, but the test cannot be found on the slides. Anything he says goes for the test and kind of goes fast. Extremely passionate about his field, lucky to have a good TA too. EZ labs
Professor Mckinney is the sweetest; he's passionate about what he teaches and genuinely cares about his students. Tons of extra credit opportunities, one assignment every week; labs are manageable, tests are hard, but he lets you use notes. Also, it's a really interesting class; I definitely recommend taking it, especially with Mckinney.
