Awesome teacher. The topic for the class was focusing on urban conditions, so going to UIC, I could relate to that, and the subject was interesting. If you turn stuff in late he's pretty understanding about things, so usually he doesn't mind. If you do ur work, you can get an A.
took forever to get papers back, but hes cool and understanding. thumbs up
A great teacher. You can turn pretty much anything in late and still get full credit. An easy A as long as you do all your work and participate in class.
EASY CLASS. You will get an A if you participate in class and do the work.
I really liked him. He had so many amusing anecdotes and this really dry sense of humor, which made going to class a less painful experience. Class discussions were very interesting and he didn't just focus on the readings, he made the discussions relevant. Great taste in music, too.
He's great, he truly wants to teach you the stuff, and his passion for it all gets you intrested as well. the papers are a little bit of a pain in the butt, but hes always avilable to help, and his classes are interesting.
He is so funny! This class is very easy except the papers are annoying. His grading is inconsistent. One draft he'll say something is good so you'll keep it but by the next draft he'll mark it up and say that "good" part needs a lot of work. Hard to keep up but he's very helpful and SO funny. A know-it-all. It's amusing
When I went in for help, all he would tell me is to read the article again
HE is the worst professor and he never stops talking. We you talk in class, he'll start to throw his opinion in your face. He grades papers based upon his personal bias towards your personality. BASICALLY, if he does not like you, he will not give you the grade you deserve. TRUST ME ON THIS ONE, IT'S HELL!!!!
His class was useful not as bad as I expected. Workload is pretty light; there's a lot of time to do papers. He also offers a lot of time out of class, which is helpful. He does expect a lot of work, and tries his best to keep to an everyday schedule. I'm an Art student, not an English major, but overall the class was enjoyable.
Professor Newirth's course proved to be quite helpful in further developing writing skills. He was always there when help or guidance was needed for an assignment, and he was lenient if deadlines could not be met. I def. recommend taking him, it will be useful to you and it is not a hard class...he actually made english interesting.
Readings are interesting and relevant, understanding about extensions and stuff, and grades fairly. The people below probably didn't do their work and magically expected an A/bitter freshmen who don't understand how college works/or both. Sometimes I forgot I was in a class and felt like it was an informal discussion on everything under the sun.
If you come to his office for help or just to talk he will help you out because he knows you care about the class. Talks about current events alot which was very interesting. He chose intersting topics for us to write about. Cool guy, good teacher.
Really nice guy and very smart. The class could get a little boring sometimes but all in all not so bad. He's really easy going and flexible with times which was a big help because workload sometimes can get overwhelming.
real dry sense of humor, receptive to questions and opinions, always helpful/supportive. basically a music snob, knows a good amount; if you have good taste in music, he'll like you and that's that. the class is mainly a discussion on music/current events/politics, and he keeps it interesting with his wit. best prof i've had at UIC.
teacher is extrememly helpful, and is always available and dependable.
If you're interested in Creative Nonfiction in any way whatsoever, you'll be very happy taking this workshop. The instructor focuses on keeping the readings well-rounded and up to date while making sure to provide context and background for the genre. As long as you attend and make an effort in your writing, you should be able to get a good grade.
While his topic is not the most interesting one in the english department, he is one of the most helpful professors I've had this semester. He can be a wise-ass sometimes, but its all in good fun.
Overall, I had a good time. He is easy-going and really helpful with the material. If you are interested in good conversation on culture and media, check it out. You won't be upset.
Simply the worst professor at UIC. He takes a personal vendetta towards students he doesn't like. If you are a student that likes to kiss a lot of ass he can be helpful. I spent minimum of 6+hrs a week outside of class and ended up with a B. I went to his office hours around 10-15 times in the semester and he still treated me horribly.
He's not an easy teacher and you won't ever get a chance to slack off in this class. BUT, his class was entertaining and very useful. All the intellectual, as well as (relevant) pop cult references, still help out (it's been a year). You had to just work really hard, but it paid off in the end because of how extremely resourceful he is.
He talks way too much about irrelevant stuff. He doesn't even breathe, he just keeps talking. He's also really repetitive.
the people giving low ratings must have been*****y students. just like any other professor, if you work hard, you'll do good and he'll like you. hes an intelligent teacher and although he talks a little too much he's a good professor who helps his students.
Newirth is pretentious and arrogant, and it shows. His self-proclaimed room-sized ego is not an exaggeration. It's almost required that you visit him at his office hours to kiss his ass. His topic is boring and so is he, unless he's talking about something completely irrelevant, which happens pretty frequently. Personal recommendation: don't take.
his class is verrrrry boring. i never wanted to go. he talks the entire time and most of the time would let us out 5 mins late. never finishes on time. he is pretty helpful but i wouldn't take him again.
very boring, he just talks and talks. he thinks what hes talking about is so interesting. if you miss even one of his classes, he'll take it as some type of personal offense. he's also really disorganized and arrogant...he thinks his students are dumb. ugh I couldn't stand him or his voice!
the subject and the professor are really boring. he talks about a lot of pointless unrelated crap. hated his class, regret it to this day, dont take!
He's really really smart but I can't believe he's a teacher. He's horrible at teaching. Always hands papers back late, disorganized, the stuff he writes on ur paper is nearly impossible to read, it's so messy, he's also quite pretentious. It's a boring class but he's not a horrible guy. Very dry, sarcastic, and funny but frequently goes off topic.
He's smart but would be better off alone in a hole writing alone instead of teaching young people. He makes u buy an expensive $25 dollar packet of papers tht u only use once! personally i think its cuz one of his essays is in there so he gets $ 4 every copy tht sells. BORING ARROGANT UNORGANIZED. AVOID HIM AT ALL COSTS!! He was nice to me though
hard workers will do well
the ppl who gave him a bad rating are simply dumb. he's not biased at all, u get the grade u deserve. I admit his class is extremely boring but that's no reason to get a bad grade. i never visited his office hours, but did work tremendously hard on my papers. I got an A in the class. I admit his personality isnt the best but he's a good professor!
just write good papers, that's all I can give for advice. u can't slack in his class. if you work hard, there will be no reason for him to give u a bad grade. personally i do think hes a bit arrogant but hes a good professor and hes not biased as said earlier. just do all the work n u'll succeed.
I think this professor is tough but fair. If you show up to class, do the work and ask for help if you need it, then you will do just fine. I like his cultural references in class.
You'll do fine if you go to class and read the articles, but he's ok with you turning in stuff late if you talk to him. Plus, he's gets off topic really easily, so just ask him a lot of questions and you'll get nothing done.
Wasn't sure about this class at first, but really walked out feeling like I actually applied myself. Newirth is a great teacher-not always the most inviting person, but a great teacher nonetheless. If you pay attention, take notes and see him when you have a problem or need help then you'll do well. He gives you the grade you work for.
He made it pretty darn clear what kind of writing was good, and what wasn't. He's not the easiest guy to talk to, and he gets off topic easily, but other than that, if you want a somewhat challenging (I do use the term challenging loosely here) professor where you actually have to EARN an A, he's pretty good.
He's boring and not too helpful but he does let you know what he wants and what he expects. His teaching style can definitely hurt your grade if you don't like it.
He really is great and he made me laugh. He's fiercely intelligent, entertaining and receptive in discussion. If you have no sense of humor or intellectual curiosity you probably won't like his class. If you apply yourself, he's passionate about what he does and he'll teach you how to become a better writer. The best professor I've had at UIC.
I thought he was really helpful and my writing did honestly improve by taking him. He was not an easy teacher where you can slack off and still get an A. You had to work for that A, but through that work you ultimately increased your writing ability. The subject was interesting and he tried to make everything fun, but it all depends on you.
Although his intellectual attributes are no where to be question, his teaching methods and personality traits are major factors why many students do not consider him to be an A+ professor.
Mr. Newirth was a good teacher. Some cons about him was he was confusing, difficult at first, and very specific, but some pros about him are he's very organized, has great office hours, and has a dry sense of humor, which i found very amusing.
Prof newirth seems like a pretty cool guy, but the fact that he makes himself seem like a bad guy on the very first day of class, and the fact that he digresses so much makes him a very difficult person to understand during class. he's not very specific on what exactly the homework is, and all of his acronym usage is very frustrating.
He was a hard grader, do not expect an A unless you bleed all over the page a little during the process of writing it. He is arrogant and does not try to hide it. His topic in class was boring
He's extremely smart and is very clear in what he wants, but he's as tough of a grader as there is. Eng161 wasnt my main subject and i barely had time to work for my other subjects since i was killing myself for a B. he keeps offering students to come see him in his office, but no matter how often you see him, he'll use that time to criticize you.
very confusing. He demands a ton of work and multiple long assignments due on the same day. Rolls his eyes, talks down and seems disorganized. I can't imagine anyone in the class getting an 'A' because his standards are sky high. Disliked this class.
He is a very hard teacher. you have to work so hard and as much as you try he always will give you a low grade. he expects to much out of his students and makes very smart ... comments. you do alot of work in his class and expect to have homework everyday. avoid him at all costs unless you want a lot of work. you have to work hard for a B.
Going into his class I was worried because of these negative ratings. Although he can be intimidating, as long as you take notes and pretend to be interested he'll like you. Make sure you show up on time, don't miss class and don't ask him questions during class-he'll roll his eyes at you. He has a dry sense of humor talks a lot, but verypassionate
An absolutely horrendous professor. He looks down on you and rolls his eyes whenever he gets a question. No matter what you do, you will not get an A. He's just one of those guys who think the world revolves around them. You need to buy a lot of books that are rather useless. Also, is this a HISTORY Class or ENGLISH? You learn more history than ENG
I was worried when I learned that he was my professor for the fall term, but he isn't as bad as he is portrayed. He is very lenient when turning in assignments asking as you speak with him beforehand. The work is difficult, but he is always willing to help.
Prof. Newirth was one my favorite professors. He wants nothing but the best for his students. Some students receive poor grades because they write a BS paper (which he can spot from a mile away). Take his class seriously and it will pay off. He's very reasonable and made me a better writer! He may be disorganized but, somehow, his methods work!
Newirth may be a hard teacher who gives a lot of work, but he sure does not cheat you out of an education like some teachers do. I put more work into this class than all of my other classes combined, but I do feel like I have become a better writer, as a result. If you want a challenging class with interesting subject matter, then take this one.
Quit defending this guy. He grades hard and very bad professor. Everyone deserves an A. The ones who work their butts off don't. Worst than Glomski.
Newirth is an interesting guy but a subpar professor. His classes are never interactive. He usually just lectures most of the time, reviewing handouts and going over basic grammar and other common knowledge. An A is possible but the workload is ridiculous- he expects you to start a rough draft of one paper while finishing a final draft for another.
As a teacher, he's not bad at all. All he asks is that you go above and beyond. The only way to get an A in his class is to write 8 pages when the min is 5. Participation is huge as well as attendance. I'll admit that he is rude if you bother him at a bad time.
Rambles on and on and on and lectures are very boring. But he definitely is helpful if you actually take the extra effort to learn. He is also very lenient in terms of due dates of essays and such if you actually make use of office hours. Interesting, smart guy. But if he's in a bad mood, he shows it and doesn't do a very good job of hiding it
He does expect a lot from you in this course, and he tells you that from day one. You really need to read and analyze the material fully and write a thorough paper to get by in this class. It really did make me a better writer though. He does have an attitude, but he's still very helpful at office hours. Get on his good side! An A is possible!
dont take this guy unless youactually want to learn english! He would be great if you really wanted to be a write maybe but i did not i jsut wanted to fill teh rquirment and dropped this thing asap. dont take him!
I took him for creative writing and i'm so glad I did! His class was small so you must engage in the text, but the texts are all short stories and only three short stories to write. It's so easy!
The class I took was centered around cities and he was very passionate about the class. He talks very quickly and writes everything on the board. Taking notes is super helpful as he refers back to old lectures often. You get graded on participation. We wrote papers back-to-back which was overwhelming but prepared me for the final research paper.
Michael Newirth is rude and expects a lot from his students. We work and take other classes along with his class, yet he seems to think our lives revolve around his class. He accused me of using an old essay I had supposedly written for one of his paper assignments because my work was "too polished" and did not seem like a "rough draft".
Mike Newirth is the WORST professor I have ever had. He is extremely rude. He doesn't seem to realize that it's only a 100 level course, and that we have other classes as well. He isn't clear on what he wants you to write in your essays. Went to his office once and he shut the door in my face. I do not recommend taking him.
As a human being, he's very nice. As a teacher, he's really difficult to work with. When he writes notes and assignments on the board, it's difficult to understand what he means and he abbreviates a lot. Then he says he sympathizes with all of us since he assigns a lot in addition to the work loads from our other classes, which doesn't seem true.
DO NOT TAKE! I have always loved english and this very quickly became my least favorite class. Rambles on about random content for an hour and a half without ever being clear on what he wants from you. Expects way too much for a 100 level class. Feedback in unclear and unhelpful. The entire class makes no sense, never know what he wants from you.
Lectures are one-sided. He speaks the whole time, asking narrow-ended ?s. Changed due dates to accommodate grading time. Willing to work out deadlines if you talk to him in office hours. Class had intriguing topics, but workload is quickly overwhelming. He enjoys topic, but that leaves him with a lot to say and thus misses discussing some material.
His grading criteria is personalized based on whether or not you made changes on your rough draft which makes it easy to get an A. If you have a talent for writing, though, Newirth will draw it out of you. I've learned more in the last 3 months than I have in 20 years about the art of writing. My grade: A- Effort applied: 3 hours every two wks.
I have always like writing until I took this class. He tends to ramble in class. He's never clear on what he wants. He's very rude and arrogant. There's a lot of workload in the class and expects a lot from students. He doesn't seem to realize it's a 100 level class.
He writes a lot on the board, so prepare to understand scribbles. You have to read 100+ pages before the next class which is a lot if you have 15+ credit hours for the semester. Sympathetic, but oblivious to student life, especially to those who are taking science classes. He seems to think you're taking his class because you're an English major.
I've never really liked English and I hate writing but I had received a high enough ACT score to be placed in Eng 161. There are 3 papers; analysis, synthesis, and the final research paper (10 pg) along with homework assignments. Newirth can appear cold and harsh at times but you can tell he cares about his students and will help you if confused.
His lectures are extremely long and kind of boring, but if you write it all down, it's extremely helpful for writing the 3 essays for the class. He is really accessible outside of class and very helpful and actually cares about you and your work. If you go see him for 15 minutes in his office and complete the drafts for each paper, an easy A.
He acts like this the only class we take. He is arrogant and he makes it seem like he is the only class going on in UIC. He is going to make you buy a lot of books and make you read 30+ pages a night. He gives too much homework. He is very scatterbrain is never on topic. He tries explaining something and does not fully explain it.
He is smart but he's very disorganized. He rambles for about 30 minutes about "administrative" stuff, leaving you bored and worn out. He will drown and overwhelm you w/ essay work. He gives around 40+ pages worth of reading after every class. If you are not a reader, do not take his class. As a first year student, I regret having him as a teacher.
Does not let students interact during workshop (which is the point of workshop), told a room full of English majors that liberal arts students will not earn money or be successful, often speaks negatively about the university, often passive aggressive towards students, talks over students or interrupts them, not particularly helpful.
Worst professor I have ever had. One time I felt so depressed coming to his class I turned around and walked home. He rambles, assigns his own readings, and grades much tougher than any other 161 professors. Do not take him if you like yourself and your state of mental health.
Really wanted to like the class. He means well but the work is rough. Felt like my classmates were scared to contribute sometimes due to intimidating nature of the class. Love ENGL and writing but wonder if my future ENGL courses will feel this way. Intelligent but difficult to ask for help. He shouldn't have to like you for you to be successful.
Professor Newirth's lectures fail to keep the attention of students and mainly consist of him discussing what is assigned for homework for 20 minutes. However, the content he does discuss is useful and he makes himself available outside of class, but the class is difficult and requires multiple hours of outside class work to succeed.
He always rambles on in class and it confuses students even more. He loves to complicate simple topics. If he doesn't see any reflection of his "suggestions" in your revised papers he will for sure give you a bad grade. Refused to bump my grade up despite it being at a 79.8. Save yourself and dont take his class. He for sure ruined my semester.
Im a senior engineering student and I'm taking his freshman writing class. I have never dealt with such a difficult, unclear, and disorganized human being. He is arrogant and wastes your time by expecting you to copy his slop of abbreviations and left handed writing word for word every day... this class sucks but he makes it miserable.
I specialize in English and professional writing, but after this class, I began to doubt that I even want to write anything. The professor does not let me know what he wants from you and your work, he does not specialize in lectures topic, and tries to talk about everything at the same time, after the lecture you will not have an idea what exactly
Extremely boring!!
His teaching method is very confusing an unclear. Instead of going off of the syllabus, he jumps around from like 8 topics in one 50 minute section. For being a writer, his handwriting is a complete joke. I used to go to his office hours to receive feedback because I couldn't read any of it. He hates technology so he will not post any grades online
Run as fast as you can! Drop, switch but do not take this class with this professor! You will never understand what he is writing or what exactly is going on during class. Grading is unfear and ridiculous. A lot of HW for a short amount of time! This class ruined my whole semester! Wish I could hate negative!
The lectures are boring, but he provides valuable discussion points that I found myself using in the major assignments. He always kept students informed about office hours/any class changes. His writing might be hard to read and he might pick on you during discussion (be prepared/attentive), but it's part of the effort you have to place to pass.
Pretends to be helpful but often in a hurry to get you out of his office during office hours. Insane amount of work for such a little time. Does not care about student life. Very disorganized during class and it's hard to understand anything he rumbles at you.
Just talks at you for the whole class and doesn't even give students a chance to speak. My only B in college.
Newirth is the type of professor who could easily ramble on for hours about useless topics that do not pertain to the class, and yet still assign loads of homework while reassuring the class that "he doesn't want to stress you out". Definitely would not recommend to anyone at all. Boring class and a pain in the neck about due dates.
Prof. Newirth truly cares for every student that put effort into the class. If you contribute in discussions and listen to his feedback, you will be set! I always thought my writing was good, but this course refined it. I recommend going to his office hours even if it isn't related to class! You'll learn and have a great conversation, guaranteed.
Professor Newirth was not my favorite. His lectures consisted of him writing illegible notes on the board, expecting us to copy them down, and then talking about god knows what for the rest of class. He has a tendency to get off track very often. He is also a difficult grader. He also apparently started crying during office hours. Overall, avoid!
I thought Mr. Newirth was a hard-ass but he was also hilarious and genuinely cared about his work. I wouldn't recommend him to someone just trying to "get by" but if you truly want to get better at writing papers and analyzing arguments, he's your guy.
This man did the world a disservice when he chose to become an educator
Don't take this class. If you ask him for help during office hours he'll ramble on some tangent for 5 minutes and then rush you out. Expectations are completely unclear and all of the course material is incredibly disorganized--there are at least 4 different documents on top of tons of emails. He also complains about masks every. single. day.
This man is the absolute worst. He loves to hear the sound of his own voice and spends all class talking about absolutely nothing and leaving students to fend for their own. If you want a professor that will actually help you and give you useful advice, it is not this man. I hate him.
Do you like waiting 4 weeks to get drafts back? What about working on 3 assignments, each worth 10+% of your grade, all at once? That's what you'll get in this class. I have never had such a disorganized and self-obsessed teacher in my life. Take literally ANY other 161 class and save yourself the misery of his.
He clearly is passionate about the topic that he's teaching, and he is very esteemed and established since he's a book reviewer. Though, he does require you follow his outline and schedule, but understands outside concerns and stresses.
He spends way too much time talking in class about useless stuff and says he will give us 20 mins at the end of class to work alone & with our peers, but we always end up with only 5 since he talks so much -- sometimes no time. When you ask for help outside of class he is passive aggressive and talks you down if you don't write the way he writes.
Worst class I've taken in my life, for the love of god I wish he's replaced by any teacher. Literally only uses emails and hasn't graded a single thing while being well over midterms.
He grades so slow and only emails assignments. Most disorganized teacher and should be forced by the school to use blackboard. Also explains a concept longer than it should by rambling a lot without saying anything.
He doesn't know how to use backboard and sends all the course content through emails. This is manageable at the beginning of the semester but everything slowly compiles into a bottomless thread of random photos and useless information. Save yourself the stress and time by not taking this class with this professor.
Made me throw how much you need to write
I took his class 4 years ago and still have PTSD from it. He can be insufferable, but he pushes his students to be better writers. I'm in a master's program now and I can easily write papers on a whim. I think back and owe it to the strain this man put on me. VERY tough professor, but you will grow! (Coming from someone who HATES English class)
funny guy, terrible teacher
not good man, my roommate took him and literally cries after class and dreads going everyday
The class was very difficult and there were a lot of essays assigned, but overall if you do the readings and go to his office hours you will pass. The class is very lecture heavy and he keeps track of participation so you have to pay attention and write notes. You will notice your writing will start to improve if you take his class.
He's a tough professor, but you can take a lot from this class. I would take it again to learn the fundamentals of writing papers. This class is super useful if you want to get better at writing but prepare to do a lot of work. These skills will carry on when creating your LinkedIn account, graduate school essays, and emails to job opportunities.
His lectures consist of incoherent babbling, he is extremely snarky, feedback on material isn't given until weeks after submitted (often close to final draft's due date), feedback is unhelpful (all caps, not specific, use of undefined acronyms), and his time management is awful (only once in a semester was class dismissed on time). Avoid his class!
Professor Newirth is a wonderful professor. He is passionate about what he does, and if you attend his office hours and communicate with him, he'll help. He is understanding, really caring about you as a person. He concluded the class by saying that as far as he concerned, he is always our teacher. He really wants everyone to succeed, and shows it.
This man... what can I say. He was my favorite professor this semester. I know a lot of people dislike him, but if you just listen to his feedback, communicate with him outside of classtime, and in general look past him being slightly rough around the edges, you will end up enjoying the class. He is passionate about what he does, and seeks to help.
I could gush about how great Professor Newirth is, but instead, I'll keep it short and sweet. He is a very accomplished professor, but he is also self-aware. Not only does he recognize that other people may disagree with and dislike him, but he also differs from many people I interacted with this semester. He doesn't try to preach to the choir.
I would stay far away from Professor Newirth as possible. Im not sure what these other reviews are talking about but he is not a good professor. He takes forever to grade, lectures are horrible and has way more coursework than other 161 teachers. Your writing will improve but at the cost of your grade. STAY AWAY!
I had multiple nightmares about this class throughout the semester.
I would steer VERY clear of Prof Newirth for English 161. This class will literally give you nightmares. He gives an insane amount of reading and demands a very high standard of writing despite giving minimal instructions and little to no feedback. He even returned my rough drafts on the due date of the final draft. STEER CLEAR!!
I do think I improved on how to write. However, this class was very frustrating. The main problem is that Prof. Newirth struggles w/ time management. He goes off topic during lecture & squeezes the useful info in 5 min. Takes a long time to give (confusing) feedback & have to return it in 3 days. If you take his class try to be as ahead as you can.
I like Mr. Newirth, he's a good man, but not at teaching. He's a very hard professor to accommodate and I felt like this was the hardest class I've ever taken. I used to excel in English classes. I almost failed. He's an extremely tough grader and gives minimal instructions on how to improve your writing. Class of Nightmares and I'd steer clear.
Wow. I can't believe this guy still teaches and the fact that he's still able to get away with the deception he got away with. I took this guy in 2007 and by far most fraudulent professor I came across. He is a malignant narcissist and will give aspiring writers that he's jealous of a bad grade and accuse them of plagiarizing. He should be sued.
I'm not even done with the semester and I hate this class so much. Although he has office hours, it does not matter the amount of time he expects you to dump into this class is insane. His classes are long and boring and consistently over 75 minute time slot. There is no work time and he gives very little insight on how to structure your papers. :(
Terrible professor. He takes forever to give feedback and lectures non-stop for the entire class. He gives you an option to switch classes at the beginning and you should take it.
Professor Newirth does have a style of teaching that engages the students, however, the expectations of the writing amount and ability caused this class to become a stressor for me. Participation is not only expected, but is a requirement and is graded. If you take this class, be prepared to spend a lot of time on reading and writing papers.
I don't know my grade as he never grades on time. The paper I submitted in late October was given back to me on finals week. He refuses to change though admits his faults. His feedback is always redundant and never helps. He yaps a lot, and mainly about politics. No tech in class, by the way. I wanted to minor in English and now I don't want to.
ENG161 with Professor Newirth is tough, but you'll improve as a writer. The workload is heavy, but Unstuck ai was a lifesaver for practice. Engage with the course materials and you'll see progress.
Getting an “A” took alot of effort, but I have to admit, he gives great advice and really did improve my writing. He's also very passionate about what he does. However, his class does need much better organization since it was very hard to keep up with the workload. I suggest to decrease the amount of work assigned so it's easier to keep up.
Newirth is a great professor if you want someone who is engaging and fast paced but expects a very high level of commitment and skill. People often talk about how he doesn't return papers back on time, but he is very vocal about how if you go to his office hours, he will look at your papers then. He is incredibly kind as long as you communicate.
As a person, he's a good guy. As a professor, he is impossible to stand. Take's forever to grade, constantly says "this is a level 100 english class & most of you guys are not english majors" yet he grades like your degree depends on it. DO NOT take this class, take it in the summer or a different semester, even he's your only option.
When I had this guy's class, everyday, I tried standing a little closer to the CTA's railways.
Absolute disgrace to teaching and UIC. Discriminative behaviour and misbehaves with students. No oranisation on blackboard, extremely confusing resources, hardly any written instructions on how to structure paper or what is expected on the assignment. While grading he takes english writing WAY TOO serious as if your whole life depends on it.
If you are on your first week in this class, drop it and take another class you are wasting your time.
I feel like this class is the only class that seems like a nightmare. He gives so much work and wants us to finish it in an short amount of time. The feedback is never clear as he provides the feedback within my essay, making it hard to understand and harder to find. He always goes off topic in class. I WOULD RECOMMEND TO NEVER TAKE THIS CLASS.
This class will be the reason you won't get enough sleep. For his essays I worked so hard only for him to end up giving me a B, and he said I used AI when I did not. He cares so much about perfection but isn't perfect at all himself. NEVER responds to emails, and when you try to talk to him after class he barely listens.
Do not take this class!! DROP IT I REPEAT DROP IT !!!!
Terrible at returning work on time, feedback is very vague and passive-aggressive, and he's hypocritical and egoistic. Don't take this class if you care about learning composition, because he genuinely won't help with that. He'll yap all class about the weekly update and give you 3, maybe 4 minutes for group work. Super terrible professor, fr.
DO NOT TAKE, DO NOT TAKE, DO NOT TAKE. I hate that I have a 350 character limit, as I could write an entire paper on why you shouldn't take Michael Newirth as your english 161 professor. The one thing you need to know is on the first day, he told us not to view his RateMyProfessor rating...
nice guy, harsh grader. yaps for an hour straight. hates adapting to tech, assignments turned in & graded thru email. takes long to grade, got two small journals graded w/ 3 wks left of class, started a research paper w/o knowing if my proposal was valid or not. spent 1st month reading a book that was irrelevant at the end. don't take PLEASE
So basically, do not take this teacher for ENGL 161, I never knew English could become such a confusing course until I took his class. He complicates every single assignment and makes it confusing. I had to go to the writing center many times to get help on how to even start on every single one of my essays.
This professor puts all the assignment directions in the syllabus, so I have to scroll through it every time to find the instructions for each writing project. It's really time-consuming.
This professor grades every assignment as if it were graduate level work. He keeps restating that this is a 100 level class, yet expects us to complete the assignments as though we were were taking a graduate class. This class caused me nothing but stress. DO NOT TAKE HIM!!!!
Dear Prof. Newirth, it was a pain to come to your yap session lectures twice a week, deal with your high standards, and indifference. Please reevaluate your teaching ways immediately. Also, please stop grading our work as if we're in grad school, this is a freshman level class, thanks.
Acts like his 161 section is the single most important class you'll ever take in your life... talk about egotistical. I consider myself decent at writing (5s in all AP writing courses), so trust me when I say he grades harshly. Disorganized with assignments and practically schizophrenic with tangents/rants. If you're reading this, avoid/drop.
He expects students to stay engaged and put in effort. Participation is a large part of the grade, and contributing in class matters, even if answers aren't always correct. If you get flagged for AI, meet with him. He may seem firm, but cares when you meet one on one so make sure you do that.
Newirth has experience editing in the book publishing industry and has lots of good feedback despite the heavy workload. If you would rather challenge yourself, I would take this course because professional writing skills are useful in any career field. It took a lot of work as an A student to earn a B, but I feel that my writing skills improved.
Just don't take this class if you genuinely have a life outside of college, because this class will haunt you like no other, cause you a lot of stress, and you won't even learn how to become a good writer in this class.
Literally the worst professor anyone could have. He overcomplicates everything and makes each assignment ten times harder than it needs to be. I wasted so much time on this class, which took away from the effort I could put into my other main classes.
