Very friendly to students. Fantasic guy! Get easy A if you do hw & extra credit
Easy A, just make sure that all of your work is graded, and not lost
Interesting, but tends to ramble on (20 minute long tangent on Romanian Cheese)
Serious, responsible teacher who will squeeze alot of info onto you. Can talk for a long time but can also be funny. Friendly on students and eager to answer questions. Patient to ESL students. Best of all 3 econ teachers at OCC. Bise is worst!
I took three classes with him and I got all As!..Econ 185, 180, and a chinese history class. He is one of my favorite teachers at OCC. He's easy to talk to and very willing to help. Cool guy and great personality.
i got an A in his class but i had to study SO HARD. His tests are pretty hard, if you don't study throughouly, don't expect to get a high grade.
I was not sure if I wanted to major in Econ. but after taking his class I decided to go with it! He is a nice guy and helpful! He does not complicate things like other econ. professors.
Man...you learn a lot, but you have to study so HARD. The tests are freaking difficult...
He is such a hard teacher. His test is freaking hard and difficult. He allows you to make photocopy of the test from previous semester, but it is useless. So I think you should rethink about taking Mr. Olds
No Comments
He's a nice guy, but should really find another job. I learned nothing! It's a hard class, really need to do all of the work or else. He does give Extra Credit and much work. If you do all of it you'll get a C.
Mike's class is pretty easy but his lectures put me into a COMA
Excellent professor!
This teacher is hilarious, he changes the curve to an 85% hes a cool teacher take him and learn, hes probably the best teacher at Orange Coast
this guy is like a sleeping pill! BUT he's cool and helpful and better than other econ profs ive hhad! gives xtra credit and is open minded and i think liberal
ZzzZZZzz... His tests are Soo hard. I studied for hours and still got C's on his test. But I am an Average student and a procrastinator. If you're smart, stay awake, and read the book you'll do better than a C. Oh, and Good Attendance helps!!!!
His tests are impossible and the class is so boring, I failed every test and still got a C though.
This class is SO boring and he is SO boring as well. If you wanna sleep then take him. If you wanna learn than take someone else. Although I have heard he is the better of the Econ teachers at OCC.
No Matter What, Econ is a hard subject to learn. But Olds is a very nice man and open to questions. He's the type of teacher you want, just not the subject you want to learn. Too many essays though...hate writing essays.
olds makes microeconomics fairly simple. I took his lecture at 8AM so it was a little boring, but his lectures are better than average. A detailed lecture handout is given for each chapter, which is then used as a study guide for the quizzes and exams. my GPA is 3.7
The most boring teacher I have ever had. And I'm interested in economics!! Extremely helpful though. Covers material clearly if you're able to stay awake, but his tests are tricky.
this man is hot i only dream of him while he puts meto sleep in class...mmmmm...olds!!!
He's a good teacher, explains materials clearly. Little boring. His tests are tricky, but he gives lots of extra points and u don't even have to take final if you're happy with your grade.
i don't know what it is, but his humor cracks me up. maybe it's because it's early, but it's hard to focus during his lectures. the way he talks knocks you out, but is interesting all at the same time. his tests are tricky as hell where there is only one completely right answer. read the book.
This guy is the King of bad humor! His tests are hard, he has the ability to make you fall asleep within the first 15 minutes of class, and he kinda jumps all over the place when he lectures. If your taking this class, GOOD LUCK!
pretty boring class but not so bad. never took his lecture, but his small class was helpful if you asked him questions. notes were organized, but you have to study! econ is a tricky subject, or at least i think so.
omg....he's the worst teacher ever!!! he's test were sooo hard and so vague..don't ever take this class unless you want to die. He makes you fall asleep in class!!! Boring!!!
I found it sleepy sometimes in his class, but his methods are very clear, and the best thing is he gives lots of point for extra credit. You can get an easy B, but work hard for an A
He's as boring as you would expect an econ professor to be, but if you enjoy the subject, you will enjoy his class. I found his class to be very easy, and it was nice cause you are able to drop the final if you've already got the grade you are looking for.
Pretty entertaining professor. He is about as stimulating as you can be, about such a stale subject. Tests are pretty hard and you have a fair amount of extra assignments. But he grades on a heavily weighted curve and gives extra credit, so the class is pretty easy.

he is kinda a boring teacher, but this was still a good class. i thought it was an easy A but i know a lot of people had trouble. read the book, pay attention in class, do the extra credit and you can pull the A. you can argue reasons for the answers you put on tests and he'll change your grade.
The class was boring, but he is a great teacher & does make the subject very interesting. There is a lot of easy extra credits, and if I got an A, anyone can get it.
had him for a semester for Micro, gonna take him again for Macro. Good professor if u pay attention to his lectures and get the outlines of his lectures. I never really used my book while being in his class, his lectures and outlines were all that was needed. Recommended.
Don't take both of these at the same time....he is a nice guy and tries to make it interesting but his tests are super hard....you can't understand what he is talking about in class...make sure you read the book and study hard....do the extra credit too!
this pro is very friendly and helpful. However, watch out for his tests, they can be very tricky and confusing
very hard have to study alot teaches very fast and test are hard as hell. not a fun class at all. Only thing I got out of it was some deep sleep.

Mr. Olds is HOT!! This is a great class. If you do well on the tests, you need not take the final, as he drops a grade. It is a relatively easy class. I got an A without studying that hard. plus her is a very nice, enthusiastic, and intelligent teacher.
He is not hot- he is 70! He is a good teacher and for econ he makes the lectures interesting. His tests are haed but the lowest is dropped and he offers points for participation, attendance and extra credit. Enjoyed Mr. Olds as a teacher and in econ
He is only the best Econ Teacher @ OCC because he offers**** load of extra credit. Tests are hard, but to do good on them just read the book. The only reason why I went to class was for the Attendance/Participation points. He only grades in a curve if your class sucks. My class didn't so i couldnt get the grade I wanted. I got a B!!! <>
Test are very hard, but get at the least C's on all of them and it is quite possible to get an A.
Excellent teacher!!!!!!!!!!
Cool teacher! Best econ teacher i've had so far @ occ. Material gets weird, so you must read the book to understand material. Is open to ?'s, and office visits. I took the 12:45 class so everyone has tendency to be really sleepy. IT CAN HAPPEN! Funny when he says that we are a "Vitchin" society. previous semester quiz&tests available @library !
He is a very good teacher who makes things really easy to understand he is fair with grading and an interesting guy to talk to. I highly suggest him for econ. he also teaches macro.
Good teacher!! He makes economics interesting and the textbook is really good too. The only thing is that his tests are hard, but if you focus on the textbook readings, you should do fine.
really hard on the test!!! most my class would fail! his lectures are the best sleep i ever got! i would suggest you look into a diferent professor!
Nice guy, excellent teacher, easy class. Tests from previous semesters are available at the library; you can go and copy them and sometimes the same questions will even show up on this semester's tests. Offers ample opportunity for extra credit, and drops lowest quiz and test scores. Best prof I've ever had. Highly recommended!
HE is a great and passionate teacher. He knows his stuff good and he doesnt mind opposing view points. He made me switcb my majors. He really makes you think and applies the class to real world politics and economics. Great Econ teacher. Def. take him! Sweet too!
Excellent teacher. Very nice; wants you to learn. Previous tests/quizzes are in the library if you need them. He provides lecture outlines so you don't really have to take notes. Just try to pay attention during lectures and you should be able to do well. A lot of people sleep through the lectures. He drops your lowest quiz and exam. Recommended.
Boring, but nice and fair.
He is a very good teacher. Will help you if you don't understand something, just ask. Uses good topics as examples, some quite funny. Many ways to earn a good grade, not just tests. Overall I definitely recommend him.
He is a very nice and polite guy, willing to help his students successful in class. Economics, by nature,is a boring subject but he makes it interesting to study and also offers alot of extra credit. Take his classes with condifence, you just can't be wrong!
The class is alright. He is pretty funny sometimes and A LOT of people do fall asleep, including me. I think his tests are difficult tho. I understand Econ but the wording on the tests confuse me.
We pretty much had to read everything in the book to be able to do well with the test. Even when you read the book, a lot of test questions do not have anything to do with content of the book. He counted participation points and attendance as 50 points out of 260 of total grading. Not even one student has not fallen as sleep in his lecture.
zzzzzzz.......just about killed myself in this class. so boring.
He is very clear. He has outlines of every chapter and is very helpful in is office hours. He is a very nice man. There is Extra credit and he drops lowest quiz and lowest exam. Plus he curves they entire class!!!
This is not an interesting subject to me, but he made it somewhat interesting. Very helpful and will work with you. Tests weren't too hard, just need to study. Different ways to earn points instead of just tests. Gives extra credit which is easy. Overall a good teacher!
He is really helpful. I took Econ 180 with him first and got an A in it, eventhough I didnt like the subject. I had 185 with him this semester and this class was very fun and I think easier than 180. Taking Olds class you just got to make sure you listen in class and read the chapters he tells you to read. Other than that you should be fine. ;)
if you pay attention you can get a B easy as long as you get B's or C's on test. the only problem the book is so much different than his tests because he just changed the book this semester and i guess he didn't update his tests..so it sucked because you would do all the readings and still fail tests.. good luck paying attention without sleeping :
Great teacher! Lectures are easy to comprehend. He gives a lot of examples. Make sure you read the book and take notes on the graphs (it's useful when studying). He's also very helpful if you need assistance. I highly recommend taking this instructor. A+++ professor!
Olds is such a nice guy, but I can't help but fall asleep EVERY DAY. He's very informative but boring.
Online Book and homework... Cares about attendence. Its pretty interersting but after about the first half hour of class it gets pretty boring and redundant....
He is a nice guy, but very boring. Half of the class is asleep w/in 15 mins. He is willing to help you after class or during office hours. Beware of his tests and quizzes, they are random and very hard. He has previous tests and quizzes in the library but they didn't help very much. Do the online homework. It's a lot of work but somewhat helpful.
He's a nice professor, but doesn't tell you what to specifically study for when it comes to the exams. Class is boring. people fall asleep easily in teh class, after half the semester is gone 30-40 percent of the class dropped. If you actually pay attention and participate you will pass the class if not then you will join the majority.
Mr. Olds is a very kind man who is willing to help out any student that doesn’t understand. Clear lectures that sometimes “drag “on. 3 test and quizzes (not hard but not easy), 2 essays, and 7 homework sets made up this class. The online homework we relatively new this year, wasn’t from the same author as the text so lots of complications arise. Th
Borring!!!! Great guy, very smart but not a good teacher. I was in the front row and people right next to me fell asleep. I don't think anybody paid attention. But on the other side relativly easy if you put some work into it. Do the extra credit helps a lot!
Pretty easy class. 4 Exams/quizzes, drops the lowest of each. 7 online practice sets, they suck. 2 short essays. Attendance and participation points were really annoying. Takes points off for attendance and expects participation/questions in a forum class even if you thoroughly understand the subject and dont have any. 15 pts e/c is a lifesaver.
I'm driving drug companies bankrupt and making millions with my recording of one of Old's lectures.
He is probly the most boring teacher I have ever had. It is extremely hard to stay awake during class, and alot of his grading is incosistent with what the book teaches. By spring break at least a thrid of the class had dropped and many of those left were failing.
first of all, econ is not easy from any professor, but Olds makes it OK...though, he tends to overexplain stuff...test are not easy, but he drops the lowest test, the lowest quiz, the lowest homework, let's you redo your short essay, curves the class A LOT!!, and offers extra credit, so with some study at least a B is pretty easy to get
nice professor. Take with him
he might be nice and helpful, and even though his lectures are available to download, don't take his class you don't like economics. Classes are somewhat boring, he moves very fast on his lectures, quizzes/tests are hard (even though copy of last semester tests/quizzes are available in the library). More than half of the class dropped/failed.
He's a really good teacher who cares about his students. If you're the type of person who tries to avoid to spend any money, don't take him cause he requires you to register for aplia.com ($25?). Kinda seemed unnecessary, that's all..
Ok so his lectures are boring and because he speaks in monotone, but aside from that his grading curve makes it very hard to fail. I went to class, did ok on the quizzes, turned in what he call the "bs essays" and did the community service and he didn't even make me take the final...I got and A and you can too. The aplia helped me the most.
YOu look at the big picture of society. 4 test in totally with one drop, 7 or 9 aplia hw assigments, and 4 quizes with one drop.Mr.Olds is clear and helpful. However there is participation points and role is taken.Talk to him on his office hours- big help.. .test are hard
As much as I like Mr.Olds as a person ,I was brain dead half way into the class. He can be very boring but he is clear.Test are tricky, very tricky... but if you somehow figure him out you can start to predict the questions he'll ask.Got an A and you can to- office hours are a must, it only helps.
CLASS MIGHT BE BORING I DONT ARGUE ABOUT THAT. BUT AS LONG AS YOU STUDY HIS CHAPT REVIEWS HE POSTES UP ONLINE YOU WILL ACE THE CLASS! DEFINETELY GRADES ON A CURVE AND HE TRIES TO BE AS EXPLANATORY AS HE CAN. I DEFINETELY RECOMMEND THIS PROFESSOR!!
Ok, I am not into Economics whatsoever, so if ur not also, then I wouldn't suggest taking this class. The lectures are very boring, everyone's sleeping and he speaks in monotone and I am not a slacker student, but he doesn't even tell u what is going to be on the test or anything so ur winging it pretty much even when I read and studied.
Decent and easy-going teacher. Will drop lowest grade quiz and test. Class only had 2 essays, no biggie. He teaches you pretty much everything you need for the quizes and tests. You can get a B without reading text, but if you want an A, read it. I only read like 4 chapters, as you can see... He gives extra credit, and they really help...
his jokes are cheesy. but they sometimes lift up the boringness of the class. economics is one of the hardest subject to learn for me, he makes it quite easy. a good professor, very friendly.
Great class! Very interesting material, classes are laid-back, but yes, he is pretty boring. Go to office hours because you can get 25 mandatory participation points. He's a really nice guy and helpful if you ask questions. Very Difficult Test though... lot of trick questions. I literally studied 40 hours for the 2nd exam. Got an A!
The entire semester my class did not know how we would be graded, every other week it was a new system. Monotone. Took him most of the semester just to get us back our 1st essay and he dropped the 2nd for unknown reasons after half of us had started it.
class was horrible. very hard to pay attention... extra credit helps a lot.. no matter how much i studied, i couldn't get anything better than a C. at least he's easier than the other professor. take it at another school!!!
Mr Olds is a good econ teacher. He is very helpful and wants you to do well in the class. The tests are pretty hard but luckily they are only 30% of the grade and there rest of the work is easy! I recommend you take him!
I took his class in this summer. This class was not an easy class because I had to take lecture ten hours a week. The contents that I should study was a lot. The tests and hws were pretty hard and very tricky. But I learned a lot and got an A with spending most of my summer time in econ. Text books needed to study.
Professor Olds is cool.He is a very nice professor. I took both ECON 180 & ECON 185 with him. He can speak a little Chinese because he taught in Taiwan before.
Very nice man, but a bit boring. Ask Questions in the chatroom, especially for the Aplia HW. Extremely helpful!!! This class is pretty easy, except for the 3 exams. The way that the questions were formed are tricky. Other than that, expect 3 quizzes & 2 essays. Extra Credit will boost an entire grade up, so be sure to do it :P
Study his practice exams (he has exams from previous semesters posted on his website) for upcoming exams, and you'll be fine. Plenty of extra credit opportunities. Attend class, visit him during office hours, and you'll receive an easy A. Guy may be boring but he is definitely helpful and cares about his students.
He is one of the best professors in OCC. He is a great individual as well. If you visit his office at least once- he will definitely help you reach the grade that you want to attain.
overall good professor. very helpful. the old practice exams are very helpful as well. tests are kind of tricky, but if you study, you should have no problem.
He's not that easy, i thought his class was kinda hard. However everyone passed but he had to curve the grades which totally helped. His lectures were slow but interesting to me.U have homework online, two papers to write which are easy, and the exams. His class is passable, but not the easiest teacher.Just study the study quides very very well.
Olds is a great professor whom I've ever taken at OCC. I took his class summer 2008. Even I'm international student, he helped me study well and he gave me cofidence. I was lucky for taking his class.
There will be lots of works but you'll learn: lots HW, but easy enough. Easy journals & indicator. Tough essay grader, so be sure u know what u talk about (I D 1st A 2nd) Try to get D on quiz and exam. Do extra credit, and u will B his class all thx to his curve. He's very nice and helpful, come to his office hour. Not recommend if u take 15+ units
This class was a little tough...really pay attention in class......he gives you extra credit....grades with a curve....the quizes are not so hard but the test are hard....they are all just worded funny....you are given onling homework that is really easy....he is a very understandable teacher and will help you understand whatever you don't get
This was a fabulous class!Professor Olds is charismatic and handles a large lecture class very well.He is funny and entertaining. He encourages a lot of class participation, which is refreshing. He explains the material well.He responds to students' discussion board posts personally, and is available over IM before tests. Both smart and approachable!
I like his lectures but he moves fast so they're almost useless unless you can write fast. Thus you are forced to do a lot of learning on your own. Most of the class is done online. And he gives you last terms tests, which is a huge help.
He is a really nice guy but his tests are insane! Only 2 A's in my class of 130 students...take it with someone else.
Very nice teacher! He is very helpful if you have any questions or doubts. As long as you religiously attend his class and read his notes on the blackboard A is for sure to get. I personally am at B, because I didn't really study that seriously. Best teacher to learn Micro or Macro Economics. I'm going to take his Micro class next semester.Cheers!!
Professor Olds is one of the most engaging professors I've ever had. He makes a dry (and sometimes confusing) subject extremely accessible. Provides really helpful notes online of each chapter that he follows through in his lectures. Tests are not rough if you pay attention to his lectures. Really helpful during office hours.
He's such a nice guy and very helpful. His class is demanding since he gives 8 hw sets, 1 journal, 1 essay, 10 quizzes, and 4 exams. Also gives 20points extra credit for community service. Tests are really hard and tricky, but he curves the class. I got a D on ALL my tests, but did good on the hw etc and still got an A in the class
Professor Olds IS AWESOME!! He is one of the best professor i ever had .. Helpful and Nice! Too bad i think he is retiring soon .. :( I wish i could take more classes from himm ..
Professor Olds is a really nice man and is actually really funny, he reminds me of the Fonz. Sadly, I wasnt very motivated to attend class or to pay attention because all of his notes were available online. You have to work hard on your own time for your grade, but then again econ isnt the easiest subject for most people.
He has a hard time explaining things clearly. For the most part you will "think" you understand it, but you'll never feel truly confident that you're right. Also, the tests are TERRIBLY written, and are very tricky and subjective. Lots of busy work too: online hw, essay, journal, indicators, extra credit. Not my style--but still got an A.
he is so cute, he really tries to explain things clearly but they come out jumbled/confusing. the little bit i learned i learned by the online hw. tests very hard. he tries to make it interesting but VERY BORING, no one pays attention in class (sleeping, angry birds, fb,etc). no need for book, its online
Took Olds for Macroecon. He's a really cool older man. His class isn't too hard, but his test are terrible! The quizzes are pretty hard too. He does curve, but the busy work he gives should make up for the bad grades on the test. Overall he's not too bad and i'd take him again.
Easy A.Gives a nice curve, offers plenty of extra credit, and gives a good amount of points for attendance/participation. Tests are hard but the other stuff cancels it out. I got D'd on my tests, C's on quizzes did all the hw, did the xtra credit, alright on the papers and ended up with an A. Lectures are boring, but see him in his office hours!!!
Good teacher. Got an A in the class without doing extra credit but tests are exremely hard. Have too study really hard to get an A. Alot of points in the class participate in classroom discussions and do extra credit and you will pass. Definantly one of my favorite professors at OCC.
