Hard marker, almost unfair. Very rude person.
Colin was fantastic! I still use many of the skills he taught me and brag about his classes.
GREAT PROF! I wasn't looking forward to taking marketing, but he made it sooo enjoyable. very understanding of personal situations, but expects you to try hard. He's a grammer NAZI, but at least I've learned to edit & revise what I write!
Mike is enthusiastic, enjoys his material, likes to discuss, and I enjoy interacting with him in addition to his coaching style. Mike speaks directly but not in such a way as would cause an affront. Offers free extra classes on writing and memory and such - just a hoot.
Makes classes pretty interesting, is clear on materials he is teaching. He marks difficult but not to the point of unfair. You'll learn lots but only choose if you're willing to do a bit above average work.
A great prof for those who want to learn. Teaches not only the subject but how to write effectively as well. Good for answering any questions.
He talks about very thing but the material and he keeps bring up the same things that has nothing to do with the course. He is a hard ass, everything has to do with grammar and a big part of my grade has to with grammar. I might fail this class and have to retake it because I'm not the best at grammar
I had Mike for another class, and thought he was awesome. For MGMT he does not talk about enough material, there are no notes. Its almost to the point that he's condescending when critiquing writing. Studying for his exam is hopeless, because all you learn in class is his life. My GPA is going to drop after this. Won't be taking another class.
This prof is no longer what he used to be. The comments from 2010-11 are not longer valid.. Very negative in class and goes on many rants!! AVOID!! Hard marker and lousy teacher.. grammar is his world..
Very one sided agruements. Didnt like his teaching styl at all
Terrible professor. Spends most of the class talking about his personal life/stories. Would blow through material quickly making it extremely hard to take any notes. I will never take any of his classes again.
Mike is a great teacher. Very out going and straight to the point. If your going to class to learn he respects that and is a great teacher. Good luck.
Mike is an awesome teacher who made learning about marketing really fun ^_^ he marks a bit hard but youll realize quickly what he expects in class. good luck to you.
Horrible professor. Goes on long rants for the entire class about himself and things that are completely unrelated to the course material. He occasionally touches on course concepts but its always really hard to relate what he's talking about to the concepts in the book. His true/false/why questions are ridiculous. No need to attend class.
Terrible professor, by far worst professor iv had in my post secondary studies. Going to class is a waste of time he talks about himself the entire class and very minimally covers about one topic per day. I learned everything about mike Orwick and nothing about ob. Doesn't follow his own marking rubrics.
Mike was by far the worst prof I have ever had since starting post secondary education. Class time is a joke since all he talks about is himself and his very strong opinions on EVERYTHING! His stories would be time if they actually pertained to the course, textbook and exams. I will never take a class with him again!
What a joke of a class! This prof seems to have no desire to teach or consideration for his students. This prof does not follow his own marking outlines and seems to grade assignments based on how he feels toward the individual. He has no respect for student's time when getting marking/grades back. I will never take a course with this prof again.
Only take this class if you are very strong on grammar. This course could be easily done online. All the comments below are very accurate.
So self-absorbed. Constantly talking about how great he is and that the Dean always supports him. His use of his iPad irritates me- sometimes it's completely useless. Also, I do NOT care how good of a baseball player he used to be. Irrelevant to the class.
Class was super easy, just read the chapters! Although he is very uptight about writing and grammar, I learned how to properly write a paper. If you want to actually learn how to write a business paper, take this class. He keeps an 8am class interesting too.
Makes you think you know the material until you get to the exams.
one of the best proffs iv ever had.. make sure you are careful with grammar as he is a hard marker for this.
I find it helpful for future classes that he incorporates grammar into the lessons, definitely a wake up call for me to improve. Tough grader but will give you clear grading criteria and is very helpful when you ask questions in class or during his office hours. I would definitely recommend taking his class!
It's a fun class
Mike was a great teacher, a lot of students didn't like his lectures because they would often end up way off somewhere irrelevant to the topic of discussion... I thought he was great. His classes are fun and he is always cracking jokes that helps students to get comfortable. Only criticism I have is that he takes forever to mark assignments...
Mike takes awhile to adapt to. Once you realize that he tells you EXACTLY what he is looking for in his papers and assignments, you will truly enjoy his classes. Use the AWE list while you are writing any papers for him!! My writing has improved dramatically since having him as a teacher. I definitely recommend him as a teacher.
Mike is a great teacher if you enjoy landing on Mars. He does flipped classes, which definitely aren't my fortay. I found that I learned more from my textbook than attending classes. He's a hard grammar marker. He would tell you to do it one way, then dock you marks when you did it that way and not the "right" way. I wouldn't take his class again.
Mike is a very intelligent professor who is clear on what he wants from you. He taught a flip class which lots of people disliked, along with myself. He is not a hard marker. He can be funny at times and annoying at times. I feel he is a hitmiss professor, very smart and helpful but his personality can be difficult.
Mike is an extremely helpful teacher. He is willing to put in the time and effort into each student and help them better their work. You are right, for the ones saying he's a tough marker because he is. Tough but fair.
great teacher.. tough marker. ready to help the students
He is a tough grader. He talks more about his iPad than he does about management. He doesn't lecture much but expects you to know the content. There's a lot of pointless in-class mini group projects. I learned more from my textbook than he taught all semester. He's more worried about your grammar than the course he teaches - disappointing .
He had a grammar quiz first week of class in BUAD 116.... That's all that needs to be said. Avoid this prof if you can..
Quite frankly, attending lectures was a waste of time. I learned nothing about OB from him, and entirely from the textbook. He focusses far too much on grammar, to the detriment of course content. He is abrasive, rude, self-absorbed and says the most politically incorrect things. Would not take a class of his again.
Orwick takes some getting used to and he is a tough marker, but he provides lots of feedback on how to improve and prepare for exams and projects. Lots of participation in his flipped classrooms, but by far the most entertaining and energetic teacher I've had. Prepare for lots of grammar quizzes and "dad" jokes. Ads and Selling class is his forte!
Teaches you things so that you LEARN them.
If you're genuinely interested in learning and retaining the concepts from a class, sign up here. Don't take this class if you expect to be able to memorize notes and regurgitate them onto exams. He chooses interesting assignments, but expects you to demonstrate a clear understanding of the material in return. Entertaining, relevant lectures.
Highly recommend. He makes lectures fun and engaging. He is very strict on grammar and assignment marking, but these aspects are essential for being a clear, professional, communicator in the business world. He makes it clear what is expected of you, and there are no surprises if you show up to class, and make an effort.
Knowledgeable and gives you the resources needed to get a good grade. Not a very popular teacher among students. Teaches a flip class which I highly suggest you avoid.
I enjoyed his class. Some questionable jokes but overall good teacher, makes lectures interesting.
Can be a hard marker for True, False, Why questions. Flipped class made for class time to work on project. Marking was pretty fast on average.
Mike is hands down my favourite professor at Okanagan College. He does expect you to work, so if you are looking to not show up to class and to put minimal effort in class he is not the right prof for you. His lectures are extremely engaging and hilarious. Never a dull moment in Mike's class I would 100% recommend.
Mike is a great professor. He is by far the best prof I had in College. His feedback is very helpful and he clearly identifies his expectations and how to attain a good grade. Mike's lectures are super interesting and he makes class discussions interesting.
Great guy
Pick any year that the World Series was played and he'll tell you who won off the top of his head! Very personable guy, easy to work with.
Mike is a wonderful professor to have. Although I was very worried going into the class, it wasn't long before I realized a lot of these reviews were nonsense. He is very kind, funny, and knowledgable. Go to class, do the homework, participate. Yes, he is tough on grammar. He's probably cringing at this right now. There's your pepper, Orwick!
Fantastic professor and I would recommend him to everyone. He tells hilarious stories and honest facts about himself. Makes the classroom feel like a safe place to learn.
Where to start with Mike. I have had three classes with him to date, marketing, OB, and management principals. He thinks he is the funniest guy in the world, and is always talking about overcoming adversity and getting his MBA. That coupled with his "flipped class style" (basically you do all the work) makes him a Instructor I would not have again.
He was a great teacher that cared about his students. If you work hard and participate he will like you. Always made extra time outside of class to help if needed. Provided great advice. Do not take a class for him if you are looking to just a pass. Take his class if you genuinely want to learn and are willing to make an effort.
I have always heard the worst about Mike, but I had him for 266 and they couldn't have been more wrong. I think his dry sarcastic humor is hilarious! He was very direct and straight forward for what he wanted for the mid term and final, and was very specific for what he wanted for the final group project.
I've taken 4 of Mike's courses, about to enter my fifth this semester. He's the best professor I've had. He doesn't sugar coat anything, but at the same time he is very personable. If you are easily offended and need to be cuddled to pass your classes, find another class. He lays it all out for you. Ton of passion and knowledge, get ready to learn
Mike is the best! He's very personable and has a great sense of humour. You'll definitely learn something useful during one of his many engaging lectures and stories. (I'm giving him a "yeah" for hotness because he mentioned he was bummed about losing his red chilli pepper... Which is absolutely hysterical)
Mike has a great sense of humor and an engaging style of teaching that keeps your attention focused. His flipped class style allows you to already have a basic understanding of the material so the lecture can be more interactive. He also goes above and beyond with extra learning materials for students that benefit more than just his class.
He makes you read the chapter. his test is very detailed. he brings the questions from the parts that you never thinks it going to be in the exam. very tough marker.
If you want to get frustrated with a prof with inconsistent grading, take a class with him. He focuses on small mistakes and reduces your grade dis-proportionality. Marking criteria is poorly defined. He prides himself on how his mini-term tests have averages in the 60s. Do yourself a favour and do not take any classes with him.
Mike has came out and said half the students that join will love him and half won't. He jumps from idea to idea frequently, and he is a semi hard marker. That being said, if you truly want to learn something, and if you want a class with a professor with who highly engaging, I would definitely recommend Mike. He prepares you well for exams as well.
Mike was not a bad teacher, but he was not the best either. He gave us an unclear schedule for mini midterms which happened almost every class. He did give us study material for them on the moodle but did not tell us until further into the semester. HE GRAMMAR CHECKS ALL THE TIME, to a very detailed point
Funniest class ever. Expected to do your work. But his whole "grammar" craze is driving me mental. Group project dropped nearly 25% due to grammar. I'M IN MARKETING NOT PROFESSIONAL WRITING. You have work hard in his classes.
I've taken 2 classes with Mike, he's hilarious and makes lectures interesting. Would recommend!
He has great examples and advice. I had him for Professional Selling and Business Sim and would highly recommend him.
Orwick is a good teacher for this course. The course is basically revolved around a group project with 4 parts that you have to write about. If you don't know how to use proper APA you won't do good on your projects. Either than that good teacher to have
Very tough grader, sometimes marks on content irrelevant to the course. Such as GRAMMER!!! (His view on grammar isnt always the same as other profs)
Definitely not an easy A but well worth the effort. If you are looking for strong marketing knowledge when you graduate, this prof is for you.
I learned more about Mikes pet peeves than I did marketing. Class time is to teach relevant material, not grammar. You learn from the textbook. Lots of terminology. Ideas not reinforced. His past work experiences are not shared, just his personal opinions. Lectures were uninspired summaries of chapter content. Unenthusiastic and monotonous voice.
Michael Orwick should not be teaching advertising for multiple reasons. He will threaten to take marks off for spelling errors and other small mistakes in EMAILS. While he tries to make to laugh, his comments can be rude and disrespectful on many levels. He expands these comments to his marking and often doesn't mark fairly. DO NOT TAKE W/ HIM
Mikes classes are enjoyable if you have thick skin and a good sense of humour. If you show him respect, he will do the same. He does a "flipped" schedule, meaning you must have the readings done before the next class so be prepared for that. He will not baby you. He expects you to have read it so he can review it in class and answer questions.
This professor cares about what students want! An example is using a free online textbook, including an ANNOTATED version by him that highlights testable material. Other considerate things are dropping the lowest exam mark and five of the 15 assignments. Did I mention there is NO FINAL EXAM! His lectures are filled with experiences and interesting.
This professor cares about his students and has really interesting lectures. He doesnt require a final exam and the textbook is free!
Mike is one of my favorite profs. He's really outgoing and really tries to make the information easy to understand. He is really hard on grading your papers so if you don't have a solid understanding of proper grammar and APA you're doomed. However, taking Bus Sim with Mike was super fun!
For real, he is a tough grader and grammar matters. He takes lots of marks away due to grammar on papers.
Mike is a heavy marker, especially grammar. Class is heavy based in group projects. Gives great feedback, tells you what you're good at it, and areas need to work on. Will help you in those areas. Use his office hours!
I took business sim with Mike. I was really nervous about this class, but he made it very enjoyable. At the end of the semester I was sad it was over. Be warned: He is tough on grammar. After so many mistakes he will stop marking your paper.
Tough marker, but worth taking. He gives clear lectures and directions. If you want to learn, take Mike. Use his office hour and get help with grammar and spelling.
His lectures are good and I appreciated him giving us a free text book. His constructive criticism needs some work, it comes off as snarky criticism with no help. He is a very hard marker and will tear you apart, very blunt. Definitely did not vibe with him.
I could see how one could have mixed reviews - but he is great teacher & I would take his class again, definitely not disappointed! He wants his students to be professional and well spoken - not a big deal if you aren't super lazy. Great lectures. Gives study guides for tests. Overall, everything you need in a marketing teacher!
Mike can come off a bit strong at first. I believe he's just trying to get first-year students ready for upper-division courses but try not to let this scare you off. He highlighted the entire textbook with the relevant info. Your grades will be spaced out across many assignments and projects to show your different skills. Very good guy.
Not a good professor, AT ALL! sometimes seems to be very unethical with students. His exams do not relate to what he teaches. Runaway from this professor, especially if you are an international student.
Prof is passionate about the course but is simply more concerned with student's grammar than their abilities to create good ads. goes on random rants about pet-peeves that have no relevance, and doesn't always specify important information concerning projects. overall solid guy but can let his own priorities get in the way of his teaching.
Did not have a great experience with this prof. Id never take a course with him again.
So here's the thing... I had Mike for Advertising/IMC and Business Sim. It was two different people. For advertising he had good instructions, good feedback but the lectures were kind of boring. But for Business Simulation, he was on of the worst profs I've ever had. DO NOT take him for Business Sim. But if you have the option, take him for BUAD266
Honestly terrible prof. Is so specific about how he marks, and then doesn't mark based on his own criteria. Looks for reasons to fail students, and doesn't care about any sort of extenuating circumstances. He will pretend that work you did wasn't done if you write more than 6 sentences in a paragraph, and his ideas are outdated even before COVID.
Mike brags about how specific his instructions are and if you followed them it should be easy, then he completely disregards written content related to the course and focuses on grammar rather than the quality of understanding. His criticism is mean. Takes forever to mark and gets mad you made the same errors when you havent even seen past errors.
Mike makes you basically teach yourself everything in this class and then explains how this applies to his life without giving you the proper information that you would need on your test. then on the test when he gives you the study guide he goes in-depth on the test on something that he said you just need to know the basics of the topic
i think he's a very reasonable teacher. his grading criteria is clear. his lectures are average.
Mike highlights the textbook for you making it much easier but he doesn't really teach much. He just kinda skims over the textbook. You have to really study to get a good grade. I think he is very nice and knowledgable but he's not the best teacher.
He goes off on random tangents about irrelevant things. Cares way more about grammar than the actual work presented. Very slow marker. And no feedback was received on what students can do better on the papers. Do not take this professor. Classes will bore you and feel very unhelpful.
Free textbook was nice Slow grader Not very interesting lectures Tough grader on group assignments. Didn't leave our group any positive feedback, just tore us apart on our grammar. Our OWN opinions were given a 0 because they weren't sourced!?
if you read the textbook, do the quizzes, and do the study guides you will do well. No exam and he drops your lowest test score. Funny also
Mike is a nice guy, but absolutely abysmal at teaching. I'm baffled by the positive ratings on here, as you could not pay me to ever take a class with him again. Also hope you love group assignments. Like a lot. If you're someone that likes paying for a class only to end up teaching yourself the ENTIRE course, then you'll love him. Otherwise, RUN.
Michael Orwick has a passion for his subject, however the majority of the learning for the course will need to be done on your own time by reading the textbook. It is really unfortunate because although he tries to teach in class, you won't learn anything useful for the exams. Also, there are lots of group projects and hes crazy specific
I was looking forward to this course but had a difficult time with Orwick.
Lectures and term papers are completely different things. For the written report, he grades extremely harshly and attempts to lower your grade as much as possible. I wouldn't take his class again. Overall, it was a very bad experience.
He is a very sweet old man but does not tolerate students who don't make an effort. He told us at the beginning of the year that we don't really need to read the textbook--This is a LIE, tests are TEXTBOOK heavy. His lectures are interesting but almost ALL test material comes from the texts.
He is a good professor if you wanna learn.
Good asynchronous class. One quiz per chapter and a praxar group project at the end. There were two assignments that were worth a lot of the grade. He was very clear with what was expected so it was easy to do the work.
The guy loves his subjects. I would recommend participating in his lectures so he has an idea of who you are. That worked for me. He's a kind human but a very tough grader.
Unfortunately, my experience with Professor Orwick was less than subpar. He has very old-school, conservative views that do not line up with modern views and values. He also seems to have a preference for male students over females. He is also an extremely tough grader with tests that are a lot more difficult than they should be.
Professor can be picky, but engaging with their system works well. Lectures are useful, and tools like Unstuck study are great for prep. Avoid distractions, apply yourself, and you'll learn a lot.
Mike is very focused on grammer and isn't afraid to point out mistakes, sometimes in a way that can feel a bit harsh. For those who enjoy technical precision, this teaching style may be beneficial.
This guy cares about grammer like his life depends on it. He makes you get into random groups every class and do a pointless exercise. His instructions are hard to follow and is tough grader. Honestly outdated he rambles on about pointless stuff his views are very old timey and not updated with the current world. LOWK racist
This guy is an alright professor but grades really hard. If you don't follow exactly how he wants it he deducts your grade so much especially on reports. He is very picky about grammar and marks harder than any english or communication class I had taken prior. However he is not horrible just sometimes rude and marks hard.
He can be tough when it comes to grading, but her lectures are very good and he explains well all the topics
He is funny at times but def dropped some crazy comments about races, women, accents and had to apologize about a comment made. Mostly a good prof but his grading is wildly all over the board especially on group assignments. Also needs hearing aids like 5 years ago, gets sidetracked and wont get through slides especially during baseball playoffs.
Tough grader and not helpful at all
