"Work smarter not harder" "Hi Im Mike I teach chemistry" Fun, laided back, wants you to do well, he reminds me of Seth Rogen. You need to do your work though. Tests are straight forword and not to tricky, but you need to know the material!
I do not like to write any comments here but this time i have to. Mike is a super nice and fun teacher! I enjoyed all his lectures during this summer semester and learned a lot from him. Attendance is very important. Especially for lab. You will be fail if you missed any lab.I highly recommend to take his class!
I have always had a hard time understanding sciences. Mike makes the material easy to grasp and understand. If i still don't get, he won't give up on you. His humor makes the most boring material interesting and memorable. I wish i needed to take more sciences so i can take more if his classes.
Mike is truly an amazing person! He is so patient. He will answer the same quetion 100 times, so that you can understand what is being said. You must take him. He is funny, and in his words "nerdy". There are a few things that drive him crazy, so don't do them and you'll be golden. TAKE HIM!
Mike Payne is THE BEST teacher I have ever had! He is so helpful and truely cares about his students. He is very funny and goofy at times which help to make this material fun and interesting. If you need help ASK him. He will only let you get behind if you dont speak up. Really there is not much else to say other than HE IS AWESOME!
I honestly don't know if there is anything left to say about him. Mike is simply A-M-A-Z-I-N-G! I've probably never had a teacher like him. He's extremely intelligent and helpful; he won't stop until you get the material. Always willing to help. I highly recommend him!
Mike you ROCK! This professor is extremely smart and helpful. Very organized and overall is an awesome individual. Must take him!
I've never had a teacher like Mike Payne before, even after having gone to a CSU and UC. He is the most dedicated teacher I've known. He works hard to make sure his students grasp the material taught. If you put in effort then this class is great. I hated chemistry before, but now I want to major in it! Good teachers are rare these days, take him!!
this professor is awesome. he makes everything so easy. he doesn't move too fast. he makes sure that YOU will understand the material and he NEVER tests on anything off subject. if you dont study you will struggle. he tells you exactly what is on the test and he gives you the perfect amount of practice to know the material.
He's a funny professor, who is very enthusiastic about teaching Chemistry. Perhaps his best skill is his ability to create metaphors on the spot for the explanation of some of the more obscure parts of chemistry. While he uses the latest (7th) edit'n of "Introduction for Chemistry", I am getting by with the 6th edit'n, which is wayyyy cheaper.
Mike is extremly helpful. His lectures are so entertaining, sometimes he does go a little off topic but still fun. He's test are hard and he is a tough grader but as long as you study and know NOMENCLATURE you'll do just fine
Great teacher, very very helpful. He's always in his office hours, always helping students, doesn't make you feel dumb. Entertaining, as long as you know your nomeclature and actually do homework you'll do good on the tests. I wish he taught 400 :(
I was expecting the worst when I took Chem for the second time after failing the first time around with another teacher. Mike is an amazing teacher, makes chem REALLY fun. Makes it easy to understand. 6 quizzes, extra credit, 3 tests plus final. No trickery on tests, were not too hard if you learned the formulas and did homework. I got an A!
Great explanations. Very clear, Mike knows his stuff. Instead of letting the slackers fall on their faces, he seems to get frustrated and takes it out on everyone with little rants. Also makes you feel like you should already know the answer to some questions. Overall great prof. Hopefully he starts getting more sleep for everyone's benefit.
Dedicated teacher, he really cares. That said his class is pretty hard.
GREAT professor. Truly cares about students understanding and he keeps it simple and straightforward. He accommodated me at times outside of his office hours b/c of my work schedule for help. Fantastic - he works really hard for his students. Highly recommend!!
Mike is a great professor he gives a lot f homework but if you really pay attention during lecture you'll know just what you need. I personally think the exams are easy as long as you know your stuff. He's fun and a really cool professor.STUDY!and you'll be fine.
Mike is wonderful!! his teaching is definitely useful and clear and you learn so much! his tests and homework are soooo long though, so study hard and do the hw! you better know your math as well!
He gives quizzes and doesnt get them back to you until after you have taken the next test. He makes excuses when he gets behind, and he says the best way to get in contact with him is through email; yet he doesn't respond to email. He some times posts HW the night before it is due. Learned a lot but not worth the stress of his childishness.
He gives unreasonable amount of hw. The tests are difficult. He is great when it comes to helping you, but extremely cranky in class, and after a while the negativity and anger towards the class gets in the way of a positive learning enviroment. It got old fast. he assigns last min. hw over the weekend and doesn't give back exams til weeks later.
Professor Payne is an amazing teacher! His teaching style is simple and clear. He loves helping his students and likes to keep the class engaged. Although this is all great, he does get behind a lot, assigns A LOT of homework, and doesn't grade very fast. Overall, he is great! And he lets you use your iPod when taking a test!
He is a good professor and presents the material in a simple way that you will get it. He assigns a lot of hw, but it is vital for learning the material. If you are not willing to work hard in his class, you may forget about taking chemistry, because there are no easy chemistry classes or professors!!
Master P is very knowledgable about the subject matter and has the ability to teach the subject matter. Class was engaging and I learned a great deal that helped me to be successful in higher level chem classes. That being said, he needs to focus more energy on the class instead of his other job(s) so that quizzes and tests can be returned promptly
Payne was an excellent teacher. We were his first Thanato-Chemistry class. His ppts. and teaching style were far more effective than the textbook. Hopefully ARC brings him back. He was engaging, funny, used visuals and never said "No" to any of us when we needed extra help. Bring him a PepsiMax on occasion and he'll be happy.
Professor Payne is amazing! I took his 8 week Chemistry class and passed with a B. Chemistry isn't an easy subject but he'spretty funy and makes it interesting. His powerpoints are very helpful and he spends time making sure his students are aware of the tricky parts of Chem. I would definitely take him for any other class.
He is AMAZING teacher!!! Very Helpful. I would recommend him to anyone. I took him for chem 310 and didn't know that he will teach chem 400. this is so sad because he is very nice teacher. He prepared me for chem 400 very well. Thanx to you Mike.
Good teacher. Loves what he does. If you have a choice, take Mikes class. He has to work on handing work back sooner. it took weeks for him to get our work back to us. He sometimes puts to much on his plate I think.
Excellent teacher. Chemistry is a hard class no matter who you take, but Mike does the best he can to help his students. He is approachable if you have questions, and he pays attention to the class while he is teaching (he is good at reading peoples faces when things aren't being explained clear enough). A+ teacher.
SO HARD for chem 400. Hes understandable and things make sense, i read every chapter in the book, just his tests are SO HARD! Taking lab with him is extremely difficult, even if you are a top student. Get ready to sign away your semester to just chemistry!!
Hard tester compared to other CHEM 400 teachers. Great teacher, I was happy I took him. A bit unorganized sometimes, but an A is possible but count on studying hours each day. I put in a decent amount of work/studying; there were times I could have been better and I received a "B". Maddox and Weissbart are better but he's awesome as well.
He can't get anything back in a proper amount of time and makes excuses about it. He either uses a different teachers tests or he writes inaccurate tests. He teaches differently then other chem teachers at AR and it makes it hard to follow. Can't get through lectures without making numerous mistakes which make it hard to understand him.
Great teacher! Passionate about class, sometimes disorganized but EXTREMELY fair to students. Leaniant w/late or incomplete work, always answers questions thoroughly. Lectures are interactive and fun. Don't expect timely grading but tests are modeled EXACTLY after quizzes. Study- its Chem! ...and bring him a Pepsi Max- you will pass this class!!
Mike is an awesome teacher. He made me love chemistry. He is tough but if you study, you'll have no problem.
Mike is a great teacher. Chemistry is a hard subject, so it is a lot of work, but I like the way he teaches. He keeps class interesting and is clear on what he expects from his students.
Mike was a great teacher. He's very disorganized and takes FOREVER to get tests and quizzes back, which can be frustrating. But he makes class fun. But do all the homework and study hard-his tests are pretty hard.
Mike Payne is no Major Payne, he's awesome, one of the best chem prof's I've had! He's extremely clear, especially with his powerpoint presentations. Chem with him just makes sense! He loves to teach, and see light bulbs go off when students understand the material. He pushes and gives u the tools to succeed in chem 400, but only if u listen!
Dont let his name intimidate you. He really isnt a Payne. But his tests CAN be a pain. Tho its no one's fault but your's if you fail. He's VERY helpful, easy going. & really does make class fun to attend. Though its very time consuming, Mike breaks it down & makes it more easier to understand. He failed chem before, so he knows the struggles.
Mike is an awesome professor who is extremely helpful, nice, and clear. However, this is chemistry and is VERY time consuming. I took it during the summer and we had a lot of work - but all doable. He explains concepts until you understand, and posts TONS of extra practice online. His class is hard, but study (nomenclature!) and you'll be fine.
Mike was an AWESOME teacher! He would continue to explain a topic until you understood. He really puts complicated chemistry terms into something you can relate to. Im in chem 400 now and ive never wished I could take a certain teacher more than i do now....im very mad he doesnt teach 400, hopefully he will teach 401!
Very down to earth, enthusiasatic teacher! Leactures are a little hard to follow sometimes. Test are pretty decent. I just wish he had more time to help meet with students. He teaches at other schools making it hard for him to focus and return grades fast . Oh and yes this professor is nice on the eye's and funny! Makes is easy to come to class ;).
He's a very passionated person when it comes to chemistry but honestly, I think that he's unorganized sometimes. His lectures can be confusing sometimes. Throughout the whole entire semester, we only did four wet labs and there's only three exams. With Professor Payne, you have to work extremly hard to pass the class.
he is super cute and funny guy. miss him that he did not teach another chem class 'cause he teach at sac state. make sure that you must put alot effort to pass this class. take him on summer 2012, and super too much hw , 3 qizz you have to pass but 1 for free, 3 exam super easy if you study hard. strong basic up to high chem.recommented him.
I absolutely love him. Great teacher and super smart. His teaching strategy is the best and he is always finding the easiest way for us to understand the material. Class is not easy neither his test, but with lost of study and help from Mike a passing grade is possible. Highly recommended!
Mike uses overhead slides and on the board. He posts the slides and handouts for us to keep. Lots of homework and extra credit. Labs are fairly easy. Mike encourages us to visit during office hrs. He explained things well and encourages us to perservere. He went out of his way to find me a private tutor.
I enrolled in Professor Payne's class when I saw all the high reviews on here. And they are right! Chemistry itself is a difficult subject, but Payne is passionate about teaching and chemistry. He assigns a lot of work, but he's an easy grader and eases you into chemistry. He's always willing to answer questions and keeps lectures interesting.
Yes, he is helpful, and yes, he is funny at times but he loses points when he degrades his students more than once concerning our collective "lack of personality." Also, it is not professional to repeatedly say that "you're screwed" if your nomenclature is weak.
Mike is super helpful and funny. He gets irritated at points but we all do. He is down-to-earth and able to relate to his students. He was a bit absent-minded but the effort he gives for the class is double the effort any student gives the class. He is definitely worth taking!
Mike made a hard subject easier for me to understand. He is friendly and is happy to answer questions because of his passion for chemistry. Like most chemistry classes you have to work hard, esp the nomenclature, but it is worth it in the end.
Mike has by far been one of the best teachers I've had, EVER. I took his Chem 310 class over the summer, yes it is A LOT of work, yes you have HW every day, but if you stay on top of it, you'll be fine. He's hilarious and his lectures are organized and really easy to follow. He's always willing to help anyone who may need it! :)
Mike is one of the best teachers anyone can EVER have. He is genuine, funny, passionate about chemistry and makes subject easy to understand, very approachable and friendly! A lot of work only because he wants you to succeed. He made me believe I can do it! Take HIM!
Mike is an amazing professor and he really cares about his students and making sure they understand everything. His quizzes and exams can be a little tough but overall he is good at what he does. He's also really funny and gives alot of extra credit work.
Took him during summer. Lots of work. Homework given everyday, lots of problems. Need book. He will NOT round up your grade even if you received a 69.9%
THE IDEAL CHEM TEACHER! Down to Earth, very humble and yet smart, organized and an EXCELLENT communicator. He knows the theory but stresses only the essentials, and he explains things SO clearly! He isn't overly harsh but he does expect a real effort from his students. Not an easy class but not too hard either. You'll be glad you took him!!
Mike Payne is the most helpful professor I've ever had. He encourages students to ask questions and never makes you feel stupid for doing so. I love chemistry now and feel very prepared for CHEM 400. Take the Payne!
I LOVED Mike, I actually hated chemistry before this because every professor who attempted to teach me chemistry failed miserably. He is clear, down to earth and so helpful. You can ask him the same question a million times until you get it and he will keep answering it until you understand. I wish he taught CHEM 400 :( TAKE him!
Lots of Home work. Gets pretty confusing and not worth the stress.
He is the most difficult teacher on the planet!!!!! take him if you have time to study 6-7 hours a day!!! he will stress you out from the first day!!!!! he needs to get fired! that's how bad he is!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Grades people differently. Ridiculous tests. Other chem teachers do not have 6 page exams and "quizzes" that are really exams that you have to get an 80 or higher to pass the class. A family member that is lawyer wanted me to write a letter to the dean about the way he runs his class. He is not worth my time. Love my other CHEM teachers!
Professor Payne should be the blue print for ALL professors to follow. He's absolutely insists that every one of his students understand topics at all times, and goes above and beyond to insure you do. His class was one of the most intense I have ever taken, but I (not being a chemistry lover) have turned into a chemistry ninja (which is crazy).
Mike is awesome. He is very helpful and obviously passionate about science. He takes alot of time to put together detailed and color coded powerpoints and answer keys. His tests are tough but reasonable, same goes for the homework. He loves caffeine (I can relate). He almost makes me want to take another Chem class. Almost.
Professor Payne definitely made me work for my grade and prepared me well for the following Chem classes to follow. Lectures are well put together, quizzes and exams are covered material, he is approachable and nice to look at. He makes the subject interesting and inspires future science majors. Do the work and chem will become coherent to you.
Professor Payne is the best, he was always available for help during his office hours, and even come on Fridays to assist students who were unable to attend his office hours. The class is hard am not going to lie about that. However he tries to make every student understand the topic. I would highly recommend Professor PAYNE.
Mike Payne really packs a punch for CHEMESTRY. :) He has his MA in chemistry, and he will tell ya, he knows his chemical calculations! AWESOME teacher, really knows how to make it stick. If chemistry is a requirement for your degree like it was mine, GO WITH THE PAYNE! He is great. Lots of extra credit available just incase youre a little rough.
Very helpful. Actively tries to engage students and does what he can to help people understand and enjoy the material. Specifically designing my next semester around taking my next chemistry course with him. Not at all hard to get a good grade if you put in the effort you should. Test length is just fine!
Stressful class, not worth it. The other reviews are great but the reality is it gets confusing.
Best chem teacher ever! I would definitely recommend Mike to anyone wanting to take chemistry. He is very clear during his lectures and he even prints out packets for all of his students. He is hilarious and makes that long lecture class somewhat enjoyable. His tests aren't long if you know the material and know what you're doing.
Extremely disappointed in this teacher. Was recommended by a fellow classmate. After that classmate had taken classes with another chem teacher he apologized for recommending him. Take chem with another teacher, even if you have to go to SCC. It is worth it!
Prof. Payne is probably the best teacher I've had to date. Down to earth, respecta student on an even level. Will go out of his way to provide an office our out hia normal tims. He's hilarious, which eases the class through boringdifficult material. Must take! However, be aware to put in the time!
I was terrified to take chemistry. But Prof Payne made a hard subject easier to understand and gave tools to figure it out. Its not easy just go in knowing you must work hard. He is extremely clear on what he wants from you and is very kind and wants you to succeed. passionate and fun I wish i could take him again. Always willing to help. Take him.
Lectures are clear, even if long. Greatly cares about students and posts keys for homework. Personally feels bad if he hinders students and stays up late to ensure assignments are graded and to make sure he is prepared for class.
Chem 400 is a TOUGH class, regardless of your professor. Mike is very up front about that fact. He's a bit unorganized, but gives a lot of leeway of due dates if you need them. Don't get behind though or you'll be dropping. Kind of tough grader, but not unreasonable. I'd take him again.
Chem 400 is a tough class, and you should approach it as such.. You earn what you earn in his class, and if you don't work extremely hard, there is no way you're walking away with an A. Very few quizzes through the semester, but you better read and understand the text to succeed on the tests.
I took Chem 305 as a prereq course. I'd put off taking it. Probably not a great idea because I feel like I would have done better if I had just finished my math courses, then taken Chem. Mike is tough but he does truly believe that each of his students can succeed. Do the work & you can and will pass his class, maybe just barely, but you will.
won't be an easy class no matter who you take, but Payne was really great. you really need to put in effort and study if you want to pass. GO TO OFFICE HOURS! i raised my test grade from the 1st exam to the 2nd exam by over 20% by adding his weekly office hours into my schedule (SO HELPFUL)
I loved him. He is so good at explaining stuff and the basics. Strongly recommend taking him.
Payne was the epitome of fairness. All his tests came basically from the homework--so if you didunderstood those, you'd get an A (depending on how many silly math mistakes you'd make, although he's fairly forgiving in that respect). The homework was a pain, but he provides answers for many of the harder assignments. Prepares you very well for 401.
Chem 400 is not an easy class. Payne goes to extremes to make it as easy as possible for students. Is passionate about teaching, and works far harder for student success then is necessary. If you do not pass this class, it is 100% your fault. Their is absolutely nothing more that Mike Payne could do for his students.
Professor Payne is a great instructor! I HATE chem and never received more than a C grade in previous chem classes. However, taking this class with Payne I received a B which I was very proud of. He's very helpful. Do the homework and labs, but most importantly form study groups or go to Beacon for test preparation! They will help a lot!
Professor Payne is fantastic! I thought chemistry would take over my life, but he actually presented the material clearly & spent time on each section. Quite a bit of HW, but in your best interest to do it for practice & to prepare for the exams. I used his office hours or after lab for anything I didn't grasp. He was so kind & helpful!
This class is more about material than the teacher. Although Mike is a great teacher! His teaching is clear and easy to understand. Some concepts are hard to grasp but this is where the textbook comes in handy. Main pointer - STUDY! His exams are tough. I would rec anyone to take him for Chem if you have the chance to. HW and LAB are areasy points
CHEM 305 was my only summer course, and it still wore me out! Chemistry is a difficult subject for me, but Mike taught the class valuable skills and techniques in order to make the class manageable. Tests are 50% MC and 50% SA. He provides A LOT of EC and I encourage you to take every opportunity possible. Would definitely take Mike's class again!
Mike was absolutely amazing. He has a quirky brain that helps him teach you in a very outside the box manner. He has an urgency to teach you the material. Very clear and very willing to help. As a summer course, A LOT of HW. Do as much extra credit as possible, study previous exams, put in the effort, and ask questions.
I took Mike's class over the summer. It was a lot of work, but that's to be expected if you're taking a full semester's worth of work in 6wks. He provides a lot of homework, but helpful. His powerpoints are also very useful to study. He is very friendly, but stern when it comes to lab and exams. I'm in CHEM400 now and refer to Mike's notes often!
Amazing guy! Exams are hard, work for it! Teaching is super clear and understandable - he knows what he's talking about. STUDY HARD. Chem 400 is hard by itself so don't blame him for a low grade. You get what you earned. He puts as much, if not more effort as the students. Keys are always available and extra help. I'd take him again 100%. Funny too
Professor Payne is an amazing professor. I took him during the summer for chem 310. And what takes a couple of months to comprehend he makes it m manageable to understand in the 6 weeks we are given. His lectures are amazing he also gives and understanding and explanation of the subject is also understandable. He will explain for you, approachable
Really fun class, but don't get behind. He offers a lot of extra credit but won't pass you on it. If you sit up front in lecture you can hear him crunch his lifesavers.
For most of the semester I was quite bitter towards this class due to massive amounts of excessive homework as well as all the lab work (pre-labs, pre-lab questions, lab reports) and the insane time commitment. Felt like a full-time school work load in 5 units. However, he is a great caring teacher who prepares you well for real world/future class
Professor Payne is a very nice person and has a great sense of humor. However, the homework load is ridiculous and he is very slow to return graded work, including tests.
One of the best chemistry teachers you can take for the lower level chemistry classes. If you already know your chemistry well, his classes can drag a little and he gives more homework than is necessary. But, if you don't know what you're doing, he is great, gives lots of practice, and really helps you understand the material. Also, nomenclature.
Professor Payne is a very helpful, very dedicated guy. He can be intimidating to talk to because he scowls a lot, but he is very invested in the success of his students. Reading the textbook is a necessity to do well on the tests because the tests reference not only his lecture notes , but also concepts from the required reading
Prof. Payne is by far one of the best professors I have ever taken. He assigns a butt ton of work, but he cares about his students and their success and it shows.
One of the best professors I have ever had hands down! Definitely take him you won't regret it! Great lectures and sense of humor. Very understanding of what its like to be a student. Extremely helpful and resourceful. Gives great analogy's to help you understand. Lot's of HW but necessary. Loved this class!
Mike Payne is one of the best professors ever. Chem 400 is not an easy class so expect a lot of work and effort. chemistry is a hard subject but Mike Payne makes it more interesting. If you do the homework on your own you can get a good grade. Tests are hard but nothing that he hasn't covered in lecture.
I learned so much from him. He really cares about his students education, and is very available, it's like he lives at ARC. Still this is a very hard course with an extreme workload, pair it with a simpler courseload. Credit is spread out, even if you mess up on exams you can succeed. Really one of the best professors I have ever had, or will.
He is a real gem for a subject so hard. His lectures makes chemistry look easy. Study his homework and you will pass.
Mike is an amazing professor and person. He has the heart of a teacher and genuinely wants his students to walk away with knowledge. This is a hard class and you have to work hard for a good grade, but he makes himself and other resources very accessible. He is a fair grader, makes lectures easy to understand and has a good sense of humor. Take him
Mike Payne is the model instructor. He has patience beyond words. He truly enjoys his subject matter. I came to chemistry after 20 years of fearing it. He made it understandable. He is available for you anytime. He really is what professors should strive to be. He genuinely cares about his students learning! You must take his course!!
Michael Payne is by far my favorite prof ever. The subject is hard no matter what but he goes out of his way to make sure his students are understanding what he teaching. Everything he does is for his students to benefit from. He does seem intimidating at first but stick through it. Best professor ever and I actually learned chemistry.
Professor Payne is nice. He prepared really good for next levels through materials that you had to practice. I just focused on calculations and didnt read the book carefully, so I lost a lot of points on multiple choices. Exams werent hard, it came from assigments and lectures. He graded fairly and helped students through extra credits.
Man, he's the best chem professor I've ever had! Amazing lectures, hilarious analogies, lots of extra credit opportunities, and SUPER HELPFUL during office hours. 4 exams, 2-3 quizzes, and a final. Lots of homework, worksheets and lab reports though, but they're all helpful to know the subject better. Take him for a marvelous semester!!!
I'll say Mike is the best CHEM 400 professor on campus. His lectures are hilarious. The exams are from the worksheets and HW. There is a lot of extra credit for the course which you'll see by the end of the semester. He's really helpful in his office hours. There's a lot of workload, but I definitely learnt a lot of chem. He's a 10 on 10 choice!
Payne is the absolute best chemistry teacher Ive ever had. He explains things very well and will help u if u dont understand. He offers lots of feedback and extra credit. He teaches u things that other chem professors dont. Im so amazed at how good of a professor he is. Lots of HW. Prepares u well for test. Test are from lectures and homework.
Mike is the best chem professor out there. I took chem 310 with him and really learned the material. Now I'm in organic chem and still remember things that he taught. He provides lots of examples and will always help out. I wish he taught every chem course so I could take him for everything. The class is still relatively hard, but he makes it great
Payne was absolutely amazing! I hadnt taken chemistry since my sophomore year of high school (3 years ago) but I understood everything easily. Hes really good and patient with explaining things as simply as possible. Exams are lecture based. Keep up with your nomenclature the entire semester! Lab report questions are confusing- do them on time!
Payne was the best chemistry professor I've ever had. He explains everything smoothly. I feel like he understands how students think and in what places they could be struggling in. I would really recommend taking him for any chemistry course. He has amazing teaching techniques that would make you love chemistry. I wish he taught 401.
Professor Payne is a gem for a tough subject such as chemistry. He makes the lectures extremely enjoyable, easy to understand, and would go out of his way to make sure the entire class understands the material. He offers lots of extra credit. gives 4 quizzes, 4 exams & a final. As long as you study, do your homework, & show up to class, you'll pass
Treat yourself. Mike is an amazing teacher and actually cares. He's super funny and is really accessible outside of class. He's always willing to help and he makes sure you learn the material. His class is not easy by any meaning of the word, but he will help you get through it. I wish I could take him again
Professor Payne is pretty damn badass. He cares about the material, and want to make sure everyone understands. He is probably one of the best teachers Ive ever taken, hands down. Work hard and ask him questions, and youll do just fine. Also, think about taking chem 84, yes its extra time- but without it I seriously would have failed this class.
Mike is an amazing professor. He shows a genuine interest in his students' success. Exams are difficult but he provides a ton of study problems and worksheets online to review and he makes himself super available outside of class. His lectures feel long (lots and lots of talking) but they are very helpful as long as you take notes. Very funny dude!
lab reports are going to take up all of your time otherwise he was cool
Payne is a great professor who wants his students to succeed and makes sure to provide any needed help. But this class requires so much time to study all the chem material, so get ready to spend most of your time studying and doing homework.
Mike is an amazing professor. You will be lucky to have him as a chemistry teacher. The class is difficult because it's chemistry but if you fully commit and put in the work you can pass. Be ready to study because the test are hard.. again because it's chemistry.
Chemistry is a hard class if you come in to it thinking you wont have to work you wont do well. I had Mike for my 2nd Chemistry class at American River and he changed my whole perspective on Chem around. I 100% recommend him. He helped me so much and I'm doing great in my 401 class because of his preparation. Thank you Mike for your love of chem!
Lab reports are time consuming but a really cool guy and it shows during lectures.
Didn't round my 79.6% to B. Says a lot.
Great teacher, hard class. You have GOT to be in every class to pass. STUDY NOMENCLATURE.... I can't stress that enough, but overall, great class, he does his best to make lectures fun and we transitioned to online due to COVID-19 but he made it a lot less stressful than i thought.
Best professor ever. There are 4 exams, 1 final, with lots of homework and lab reports. Also gives EC. DO IT! That's what helped me get the A in the end. Study the practice tests he gives and homework to do well on exams. Exam 1, 2, 4 aren't bad, but exam 3 was harder. We went online halfway thru semester. REWATCH THE LECTURES, it will help 100%.
Just because u hear good reviews on him doesn't mean this class will be easy. He makes u work for an A even a B. If you're taking this class this Fall '20 during COVID-19, participate, ask questions, he's glad to answerquestions! You guys have an advantage, rewatch lec/lab recordings, that helped me pass. Make this class your 1st priority, no joke.
Mike is a great professor. I would definitely take him again. I took him for Chem 310 over the summer before I took Chem 400. He really cares and wants you to learn. He'll blame himself if overall class did bad on exams. He wants to you participate in class .He is very stern in what he does and assigns. Lots of HW. Office hours are best.
He is an outstanding teacher. He is very detailed with his lecture and makes sure everyone understands the material. Though he is very strict with his rules and attendance he wants to make sure all his students succeed. Highly recommend this professor if you are willing to put a good amount of work.
Three tests, one final, a few labs, homework/assignments for every chapter, and extra credit. Everything you learn in the class is on YouTube, but Payne also explains the material well and clears up any uncertainty. Nomenclature and dimensional analysis are a must-know. Not an easy A, but neither is chemistry; it's yours if you study. Good luck!
Professor Payne is extremely disorganized and terrible at explaining Chemistry. This class is supposed to be a basic introduction to Chem. He goes into it already thinking that some of the more complex chemistry is common sense. Avoid at all costs! Take Chem in the spring semester or over summer instead. Because he will threatens you about Dean.
Gave useful lectures but he's a harsh grader. He also changed his syllabus right before finals so a lot of people failed the class. There was a lot of homework but there were extra credit opportunities. He printed the notes for students so that was helpful. There was a lot of homework and the lab reports took hours.
Don't take his summer course! Prof. Payne isn't a bad lecturer but lectures are very long. 2 big problems: Prof. Payne is not very tech savvy class is fully online this causes the student a lot of stress. He did not grade one paper until after the second test. How can you fix your mistakes if you don't know you're making them? Had to drop :(
Mike Payne is one of the best teachers I've had sure I dropped his class mainly due to me not studying enough because his class was tough. Overall he gives lots of practice which will make you learn your stuff, I did not take advantage of this and surely will next time.
He gives A LOT of questions on the exam and doesn't provide enough time to get them done. He also complains about students cheating, but students wouldn't have to cheat if he provided sufficient explanations for how to solve chem problems. Overall, don't be fooled by the positive ratings. I can assure you, chem 400 is not an easy class.
The worst chem professor ever. He threatens students in all aspects especially with grades, and is very disrespectful. Overlooks questions when theyre asked and is just completely rude. Seems like he doesnt want anyone to be successful and lets ppl figure it out for themselves. Take him if you want to be disrespected and threatened.
Took his class for CHEM 400 online and it was the worst decision. He would constantly accuse all the students of cheating and would rant about this for half of the lecture. Super heavy on homework and lab work, this class plus all the other ones I was taking, it was very hard to keep up.
Exams are DIFFICULT with a short amount of time to take. I studied 35 hours a week for this class and it still isnt enough. Does not curve grades. Lab reports are LENGTHY. You can learn A LOT in this class but if you expect to get an A or even a B YOU HAVE TO WORK. If youre not a chem major get a chem tutor if you have to have an A in this class.
This class is DIFFICULT. It will make you second guess your major and your future. His exams are extremely difficult with not enough time imo to complete them. Advise not to take this class with any others if you have to pass. I mean pass with a C. Doesnt curve grades, doesnt drop lowest exam score. The grade you get is the grade you earn. BEWARE.
Great professor during covid lockdown. He gives out packets so no mass printing and has an online textbook to use. He handwrites homework and exams so there are no curveballs. This class is very difficult, but grade is based on how hard you work. He has live lectures during quarantine, but no webcam needed. Sometimes doesn't answer emails fast.
Professor Payne is the best of the best. Can't recommend his class enough. He has the BEST office hours, manageable homework, offers EC. He truly cares and puts in so much effort and time for his students. He ensures everyone understands the lessons. His exams are easy if you put in the effort and stay caught up. My favorite professor!!
Mike Payne is the BEST chem professor - he makes everything super clear, uses great analogies, and is always willing to answer any questions that arise. His lectures are interesting and funny, and he explains everything in depth. Be prepared to do lots of homework/studying, and go to office hours if you can! 10/10 would recommend Professor Payne.
This guy is way to hard on his students and needs to let up. Dont cheat and literally anything simple because even if you didnt cheat and HE thinks you did he will email the dean and you will get cheating on your record. Takes his job to serious especially digging Covid, like chemistry is already hard.. now do it online with labs? Ya right
Chem400 is a hard class, but he tries to make it fun in lectures. There are a lot of office hours where he tries his hardest to make sure everyone understands the material. Really cares about students education. There is quite a bit of work to be done for this class, but that is just how chem is. DO NOT CHEAT! he takes it very seriously.
He's incredibly caring regarding his students. He hates cheating more than anything else and the amount of homework will suffocate you but if you do it. It will help you pass I'm not done with the course yet but WOW you don't realize how little work you do for other classes until you take this one.
Doesnt care about his students. Takes a long time to grade most assignments other than exams. Exams are very heavy on your grade & too lengthy (ex 40 MC and 10 written questions all to do in two hours or less). Does give some extra credit, but still not enough to make up for not curving anything & poor class average. Find a different professor!
He cares about his students and gives you a lot of time to ask questions in lectures and during office hours. The only reason I didn't give him a 5 is that he mainly grades off of tests (labs too but those are easy), tests are not curved. Need separate C's in Lab and Lecture to pass. Took online, but he operates better in person. Might retake him.
This class is very hard. I was always a student that put in very little effort yet passed with high B's and A's. I failed my first exam in this class and it checked my ego. By attending most office hours and not being embarrassed to ask questions I passed the class with a B-. Without Professor Payne's patience with my questions I would have got a C
Lecs & Labs fast pace, he records them. Lots of HW/Asgmts. back to back not enough time. He does offer EC but doesnt count towards exm. Stressful online& rushed frequently. Very strict! Didnt grade turned Asgmts. On time. Uses his website and canvas. Do not cheat, I will end you his words. Read what I put online dont bother me attitude. SMH
Payne is a really good instructor. He has a buncha homework but does give really good feedback. He prepares you very well for upcoming classes. Payne is really reliable i went to his office hours the whole semester and for me specifically he even reached out for help for me for labs. Even if I had an F, he was willing to help me change it.
Prof. Payne is patient and he's always willing to answer any question. He is really good in teaching chemistry, and he will never give you the difficult problems on a test. I believe if you have taken a chemistry class previously, there's a high probability for you to pass the class. But you still need to study hard and do all the assignments.
I didn't like his dismissive energy at times to be honest. Lectures were rushed and lengthy. Too many papers and simply not enough time to complete. If you are taking additional classes, you may want to reconsider taking this class with other classes, it can get pretty difficult. He should lighten up and not be so hard in a general chem class.
You have to make sure that you are paying attention. This is my third time taking this class, he made learning fun and is willing to help you more if you ask him. This semester he went above and beyond including extra lectures and office hours to help students. He is really funny and his jokes helped me learn the material better.
Payne is an amazing instructor. Class isn't easy because it's chemistry. Goes above and beyond with his teaching. Truly cares about his students learning. If you are struggling, he is willing to help you. His lectures are interesting and he's funny. Highly recommend!
He is the best instructor ever.
About professor Payne, I should say: I hope all instructors were like him. He is well-organized, always available in case of contact, and very eager to help. His lectures made the subject easy to understand. Hint: My grade could improve if I could manage my time (work and study).
AMAZING !!! if you need to take chem 310 take him. Very detailed lectures and answers all questions. I am taking this course during the summer so the course load is heavy but manageable. I just finished my second week of the six week course. He also does offer extra credit but it can be intense with all the assigned work from each chapter.
Ive been taking payne since my freshman year. He is prolly the best there is @ arc. The meterial for most is difficult but if your like me and took IB chem in IHS youll do just fine in 310. DO NOT GO INTO 400 OFF THE BAT FROM HS. He will even warn you in 400 if you do. Dont make the same mistake as me! ALWAYS TAKE HIS ADVICE. you got this! -Sage N.
He is not a bad professor, He is really smart and knows what he is talking about. if you really love chem and want your career in that path he is the best professor to take. But if you hate chem and want to do it and get over with it, you cant pass his class. I love chem but I was to lazy in his classes so I didnt end up with the grade I wanted.
Awesome Professor!Explains the criteria very well in depth and is also very helpful if you have any questions or are struggling in the class. He was a through grader because he really wanted you to grasp the concept of Chemistry. But he was so friendly intelligent and hilarious he really made the course extremely fun!
I took Chem 310 over the summer last year. I wasn't able to perform as well as I'd hope, but that was due to other outside factors. Overall the class was a good experience, even if I wasn't able to do well, professor Payne taught many useful skills that I was able to remember and use when I retook the class with another professor, making it easier.
Such a great professor, he has become a role model for me if im being honest. He sais lectures are mandatory but everything is recorded, which he doesn't have to do. Professor comes off as strict but he's very laid back Overall 10/10, amazing professor
Chemistry is a hard subject, but this professor explains it well. He mentions that this class in unlike any high school chemistry class, and he is right. Not expecting that, I dropped it due to low grades but it wasn't his fault. He lectures pretty in-depth and is laid back with labs but doesn't come to class late or else he will embarrass you
Took this class for 2 weeks. Literal hell, so much homework and work, and tough grader. The next semester I took a different professor. Same course, and I ended up learning way better and the work load was way chiller. Just shows that its the professor.
I was always really bad at chemistry but his lectures made me understand and love it. But, there was a lot of homework assignments, most of them unnecessarily long at times, that made it very stressful and time consuming. He also seemed on edge and stressed, took forever to grade, but made up for it by giving 50 extra credit points to everyone.
He thinks too highley of himself and gives way too much work while pretending to care about his students. Take a different professor.
Mike is nice but he's way too stressed to be a good teacher. He is always exhausted bc he works long shifts that he can't handle. Assigns a lot of HW/textbook readings, takes a while to grade, and has a condescending tone towards students who make mistakes. If you are good at chem, go ahead take him. But if you struggle with it, don't even bother.
He may seem strict but he cares about his students. His lectures are engaging and he uses a lot of analogies to help you understand the material better. He is always very clear on his instructions and emphasizes what you should and shouldn't do to get a good grade. HW can be long but it's useful practice for the exam. Take his class!
There is no reason to give students trick questions on exams than berate us. This is a VERY RARE strategy for professors to deploy ON EXAMS and has NEVER happened since (Took this course 1yr ago). Lewis structure for a metal placed in the middle of 4 question on them? Just wait until you get to the usless skill of redox! GB 4ever chemistry.
Mike is an amazing professor for CHEM 400. I've heard that he is a bit tougher than some of the other CHEM 400 professors but he truly cares about you as a student and your success in his class. Lots of opportunities for clarification and getting help. Don't fall behind in learning the content, everything builds on itself. Good luck!
He's there for his students and doesn't make them feel dumb for asking questions but his lectures are boring and not helpful for the exams, you're going to have to spend all your time doing 10-15 page lab reports weekly plus 6-8 page hmw, he didn't give any partial credit for the quiz and exams often had trick questions. I do not recommend him.
Mike can be a tough professor, but his classes are engaging and helpful if you put in the work. The workload is heavy, but using resources like Unstuck ai alongside the textbook can really aid your learning. Overall, a challenging yet rewarding experience.
Mike's an amazing teacher, always there if you have questions. Cared about whether you understood topics, but very difficult class. Exams were really hard for me never got above a C no matter how much I studied. Lots of homework, but helpful with learning topics. Really helpful and engaging lectures. If you want to actually learn take this class.
if you make a mistake, it's as if the heavens and the earth would stop moving, not for me, super strict, exams are hard, he tells you how he failed this same course and now he's the prof, but he makes you kill to earn an a, except if you're good at chem already, otherwise it's a lot of work in class and outside of class
His course material and website was highly organized and thoughtfully laid out, with written and verbal instructions that were straight forward and easy to follow.  He had a dry, wry sense of humor that cracked me up! His consistency, clarity, personal engagement, subtle humor, and fairness made him my favorite professor.
One of the best professors out there. The practice problems on his website are incredibly helpful; he even includes some of the exact same questions on the tests. He's always willing to help and takes the time to explain everything clearly, step by step, from the very beginning. Overall, a truly supportive.
The course material & website were highly organized. Written/verbal instructions were straight forward & easy to follow. Tons of analogies that STICK in your brain! The overall vibe of the class: his dry, wry sense of humor was something to look forward to and reminisce over! He does tend to be a little tense, but he is so caring!
He's not for everyone BUT personally for me as someone with ADHD, he was perfect. The HW doubled as practice which and if you were great on the HW's you'll at least pass the exams. He gives great lectures. He's genuine, and in this field I think that's important. Everything he does is to prepare you! Comes off as rough but he's there to help.
His class is full of stress and will make you stressful. Be ready for tons of unnecessary homework. He will make the class almost impossible for you to pass no matter how hard you try. You spend an entire day complete the homework and guess what, he put a zero.
Very well-structured course with extremely clear expectations. Extra credit opportunities built specifically on improvement rather than performance. Lectures are long but well-planned and Mike has a quick wit and dry sense of humor that'll get you through. He can seem scary but he's very kind. Not an easy A but amazing if you actually want to learn
Material covered was not difficult to grasp but teacher made an environment not conducive to learning. Constant berating of class and students every lecture. "Dry humor" did not come across well to many who dropped. Teaching was bland and quick. Questions were never answered in detail just abrupt responses. Sciences should not = mean to students!
