He is a great teacher who is really enthusiastic about what he is teaching! He is so knowledgeable about the topic that class flies by! Sometimes the material is hard to understand but he is wonderful at explaining. Really cares about his students. Learned the name of all 150 kids in my class within two weeks!

I absolutely loved this class and professor. He picks books that will affect your life, and he is a master at turning the discussion back to us in our culture. We spent a lot of time relating the ideas in the books to our religion, and it was amazing. You will be doing a lot of reading, but it totally pays off in the great class discussions.

Professor Pope truly respects his students and merely wants them to share in his love of Greek and Roman literature. He is probably my favorite professor at BYU. Prepare to love this class!

Easiest A you can probably get at BYU. Also his class is extremely enjoyable and you will grow significantly if you read the books and participate in lectures. The books are enjoyable and not a very intense load. There are about 7 quizes and three tests. The quizes are practically completion. Tests are 1 page thought papers on the books.

I was not looking forward to taking this class, but Prof. Pope made it so interesting! The class is more of a discussion, but participation isn't graded. The quizzes are easy and he gives you the prompts for each test ahead of time so you can prepare. He made the class interesting and I really learned a lot. Great class, definitely recommend.

Great professor who encourages self-learning. An individual who shows genuine interest and concern towards students. Would highly recommend him to all who needs this as a GE requirement. There's a quite a bit to read, but the reading's manageable. A very achievable 'A'. Passionate about the subject.

His tests and quizzes are just essays so if you're good at writing you'll be fine. His TA's were hard graders but if you go in and talk to Professor Pope you'll get an A. Dr. Pope is a stud! He brings up debate and controls his lectures. He is very knowledgeable and passionate about classics. The grades are based on essays, but he occasionally gives you the prompt before hand to study. There aren't any surprises in his class and it's a great GE credit.

His class is amazing and if you show up to class, he will go over what you read and give you all the information you need to know for the tests (which are short essay questions. They're really easy). He LOVES music and will tie different music into his lectures which makes it fun and relatable!

Best professor I've ever had. Fights the curve system and the "if your students get bad grades we'll give you a raise" system. No multiple choice exams. Though he recommends certain translations of texts, you can get away with free versions from the library or Amazon. Easy class if you can analyze text OR if you attend class.

Professor Pope is by far one of the best professors at BYU. You can tell he has a true passion for what he teaches! He is HILARIOUS, I went to lectures just to be inspired and learn something new. I only read 1 of the books for the class and pulled out an A-, you just have to write good papers for the mid-term and final. And show up for quizzes.

He is THE MAN! The class does require a lot of reading BUT if you go to the lectures and listen, it isn't a hard class at all. Quizzes aren't bad and neither are tests. 10 quizzes, 3 tests. He even gives you the prompt for the tests before hand. 10/10 would recommend.

Dr. Pope's class proves you can have an "easy A" and an intellectually stimulating, thought provoking, life changing class with the same professor. Class structure: read a chapter from an epic poem, show up to class, discuss whatever you want to discuss. 5 or 6 easy quizzes, three tests in the form of a 2-3 page essay with prompts given beforehand.

Dr. Pope is one of the most amazing Professors at BYU. You come to class having read and then you get to come to some of the most amazing lectures you will ever have. They always make me think because Dr. Pope is so intelligent and funny and makes everything applicable to us. He is also so willing to help and you can tell he really cares.

Not only are his lectures entertaining and insightful, but students lead the discussion and ask what they are curious about, so every class is a new experience. Latin 111 is maybe the hardest humanities course available at BYU, but Dr. Pope made it feel like a breeze. You will be tempted because he doesn't usually collect work, but DO NOT fall behind on ANY homework. The class moves FAST, and you need to have o-chem level memorization skills. Honestly was one of my favorite classes ever at BYU.

I can't say enough good things about Pope. By far the best professor and class that I have taken at BYU. I actually looked forward to going to class everyday. Not only did what we talk about in class directly affect the tests, but they were fun, engaging and interesting. I would take this class again and again.

Dr. Pope is AMAZING! He's the kindest most understanding professor ever. The reading for the books is pretty long, but he is so nice to the students about the tests. You take them in class and you can turn it in the next day if you run out of time. He also memorized everyone's (150+ people) name out of nowhere! This man knows how to teach!

This was my favorite GE course, bar none. Doctor Pope leads this class as a discussion, and it's super engaging. You're graded on a few in-class essays where he asks you to analyze the questions that we've been discussing in class all along. If you show up for class, read the books, and participate in the discussions, it's an easy A.

WOW!! By far the best class I have taken and ever will take at BYU. He was absolutely amazing. The reading is time intensive, but so interesting and worth it. Some TA's grade harder than others, but if you go and review your assignment with professor pope he will give good feedback and will sometimes bump up your grade. TAKE THIS CLASS!

Easiest general I've taken at BYU! He is an awesome speaker and makes ancient literature applicable and actually entertaining. He requires you to read four books during the class but I only actually read one and I did well on all the tests. Take this class!!!!!

Read/go to class and you'll do great. Grades are based on short essay quizzes and midterm essays which are taken in class but can be finished and turned in later. Its a good option for an easy GE but it seems the TAs decide your grade by pulling a number out of a hat. Seemed random without much guidance but Dr. Pope is fair if you go talk to him.

One of my favorite classes I have taken on campus. His lectures are inspiring and make you think and develop your critical thinking skills. He helps you develop deeper respect for poetry and the way people thought.

Dr. Pope was one of the best if not the best professor I've had at BYU. He is easy-going, his TA's are fair graders, the quizzes are super straight forward and easy to do. He loves what he teaches and its easy to show up or miss class and still do well as long as you are writing good answers to the quizzes, which is also super easy to do.

Dr. Pope is an encouraging mentor. Even though I struggled with Latin, he made me feel like I was improving and doing well. I knew that if I wasn't prepared, he wouldn't call on me, and if he did (or I volunteered because no one else would) he would help me get through translation. If his light is on in his office, he'll talk with you. So awesome.

Honestly such a sweet professor. He was really passionate about the readings in class and made the lectures very interesting. OH AND he knew all of his students' names by week 3. really wanted to make us feel like people. He was really understanding and a good GE class! Pretty easy grader and it was a laid back class.

Dr. Pope is a REALLY GREAT professor! He's caring and always helped me out when I missed class a few times due to sickness. There's a lot of work for this class, as with any Greek class. Dr. Pope is just the best. He is enthusiastic about the Iliad and will help you understand every little bit if you need it, but never makes you feel dumb for it.

Dr. Pope's class is THE best way to earn your letters credit. He's seriously the most chill guy on the planet. Initially I was intimidated by the content of this class because I struggle with reading greek/roman literature, but Dr. Pope made it really easy and stress-free.

Everyone who took this class got an A. Even if things had been "graded", anyone who cared at all would have gotten an A. Lectures were very open for student participation and he would explain the literature. Easy general, good professor.

This is one of the best classes you can take. Especially since it can get a general out of the way. You don't have to be an expert in the class. If you have a broad understanding of the readings and listen to his lectures, which are pretty interesting, then you'll do great on the tests.

You read 4 books during the semester (you can definitely make it with only sparknotes if needed). Each class is just a discussion where you talk about what you read. 2 midterms and a final, all of which are papers with no time limit. Grading is incredibly easy. Easy A, but also fun to learn and talk about the stories in the classics - good insights

Mike Pope is legendary. Super funny and caring. Take this class for your Letters GE, you won't regret it. There is a good amount of reading (2-3 hours/week) over the four books you discuss in class so that's the only thing you really have to worry about for the class. Pope is the best.

Midterms were handwritten papers, but they were so so easy. Do the readings. There's a lot, but any confusion will be cleared up by going to class. He is so chill and is more than happy to help people understand what's going on. He will help you have a deeper appreciation for the classics, music, and nature. He is an awesome guy!

A top-tier professor. Mike imbues his personality and the energy of the class into every lecture. You get a beautiful mix of the classics, Icelandic music, and clever points from the students. He deeply cares about our problems too and encourages us all to find nuance in the daily sludge. I encourage you to do a recitation for extra credit!

Pope cares so much about his students and he's so funny. Class time is made up of a discussion about the reading for that week, led by Pope. The only assignments were assessments for the reading you did and your attendance. Midterms were a paper and the final was to go out in nature. You learn a lot and it's easy to do well.

Pope was the coolest professor ever. You don't really need to buy the books if you would rather listen to them on youtube. Pope is super fun and easy going, his class is discussion based, he asked us to not take notes and just talk about the books. Mike has such a great heart and DEEPLY cares about his students. The tests were easy but reading was heavy (use sparknotes). While a super nice guy if greek lit isnt your thing letcutres can be super long and boring.

Professor Pope is an all time favorite! In greek and roman literature we had to read several ancient and confusing books, but his lectures explained the books so well and were full of passion. BEST GE EVER TAKE THIS CLASS! Two essays, final was sitting in nature. What I love about this class: If you want to learn, you learn a lot and get an A. If you don't want to learn, you learn nothing but still can get an A! I would say I did a mix of both, and many times I came away feeling emotional. Reading Iliad and Odyssey was cool.
