This teacher sucks. He forms cliques with a select group of students. He has these same students correct the classwork. He doesn’t really read the papers. If you kiss his "hind quarters" and make it to the select few you’ll do well, otherwise it’s a "C" at best.
AMAZING professor! The best at SDSU so far! The course is difficult and you have to attend class, but only because its the only way to learn the material. ALL material is presented through class discussion. Only papers! Class is designed for people who speak up and get involved.
This class is like a philosphy class. U have to be really open-minded & interested in the topic. As a teacher, Roberts is approachable & as long as you try, you will do well. Getting an "A" in this class is difficult unless you have an excellent grasp on social theory or are a philosopher.
Of course he will get closer with students who actually care about the material and know what theyre talking about! He's a cool professor, no attendance just papers. This class didnt stress me out and I still learned a lot. Take him if you want an easygoing class!
great class...learned a lot cool professor
Don't believe the hype! This teacher is a joke. Tries to be cool, but isn't. A firm grasp of the material is not needed.Get a dictionary of terms, cut, paste, put your name on it, turn it in, get an "A".Using your own grey matter to expand on theories is unacceptable for some reason, regurgitation in
HE GRADES ONLY ON A FEW PAPERS AND YOU MUST FOLLOW HIS DIRECTIONS EXACTLY TO GET A GOOD GRADE ON THEM. HE IS A REALLY COOL GUY THOUGH, DOWN TO EARTH, AND REALLY OPINIONATED, ESPECIALLY ABOUT BUSH.
This guy only has papers, but no tests. So you can easily pass this class if you don't get an easy A or slack off. It could be difficult though.
Great Prof, class discussions are a must, grading it based on papers, discussions and general intrest. If you have Q's, always avab for answers
Roberts is one of the best. Charasmatic personality and excellent grasp/interest of the material rubs off on you! Class involves reading and discussions, graded by papers...he allows re-writes! Overall an excellent class and an excellent teacher (also a cool man) Get involved, go to office hours:)
Prof Roberts is a great prof. He is very helpful and grades fairly based on: class participation, papers, discussions, etc. This class was the most interactive class I've ever taken at SDSU and I even enjoyed going to class. Take him, he is great!!
This teacher is alright. New to SDSU. 2 self papers, 1 group paper. Easy class. I never showed up for class. Got assignments from other students. Just showed up to turn in and still got a B. Lectures can be boring. Some are interesting. It was an alright class. Easy grade.
One of my favorite Prof's ever! This guy is not only knowlegable but he also relates the class to everyday life. You don't need to read unless you have to do a chapter summary (only 8 of those) because u read in class. His papers are cake if you take notes and get the deffinitions and have an understanding of the reading---follow the prompt.
He's a little corny and repetitive but his class was easy. Lectures are hilarious. You go to class just to rack up quotations for your weekly papers, though attending sometimes can be a pain. Since he's new, he might change his plans but we only had two 5-page papers.
I definitely wouldn't say he's hot or the best prof I've had. But he's not that bad either. We had a 2pg. paper every other week or so, and only 1 quiz. The best part was that there isn't a final.
GREAT CLASS. 2 PG PAPER ALMOST EVERY WEEK TO SUMMERIZE THE READING, BUT DOESNT MATTER IS YOU READ, JUST LOOK IT UP ONLINE. 2 LONG PAPERS, 2 25 QUESTION QUIZES, NO FINAL. FUN LECTURES. LETS YOU OFF EARLY AND CNCELS CLASSES CLOSE TO LARGE HOLIDAYS. OVERALL REALLY NICE GUY
Really funny teacher, very intersting. The class itself was pretty easy. Response paper every week on what your read. 2 Papers, no final. Fun class
I have to say that Professor Roberts has been one of the best Professor’s I have had at State. He gets everyone involve and if you don’t have anything to say then you can take a pass. The reading at times were hard but he goes through them with a fine comb. He was actually one of my hottest Professor’s and it’s always nice going into a class where
Prof Roberts is a HOT NERD. He's brilliant and hilarious, too bad he's married. He doesnt take attendance but you will want to come. Group discussions of previous reading is very helpful in understanding the theories.
This class had me baffled! I thought I did terribly. Everytime I said something in class Dr. Roberts looked at me like I was speaking mixtec. I thought my papers were a joke and was embarrassed to turn them in. Ended up with A's. Don't get discouraged early in this class, his focus really is to get students interested. Have fun and relax!
Best teacher i've had at SDSU, fun, excited about the subject, interesting to listen to, always keeps the class involved, and pretty hot!!!definately take him if you can
Prof Roberts is a really cool guy but his class is really involved. If you miss any of his lectures it will hurt you because they are incorporated into his long essay assignments. I would not recommend this class as an elective.
Roberts was a great professor. He makes class interesting and interactive. I learned a lot from the class especially considering I started out not knowing anything about the topic... he broadened my mind and also made it entertaining to learn. If you take his class, you should love to write because majority of the work is writing and discussion
i was dissapointed with the testing and grading procedures, very vague in regards to exact expectations for tests and papers - as i and other students recognized. the subject matter is great and prof roberts has a great way of breakin it down got b-
Assignments were extremely vague, and his grading seemed erratic. The same people stumbling over simple words during class reading were the ones doing well on the essays...? Very good teacher, and very stimulating class, but his grading leaves much to be desired.
GREAT! WOW! I have no complaints! Read the books! Words are tough to comprehend at times, so get with someone that knows the theorists points of view. Several response papers, two long papers and two 28 question tests (varies) I wish he taught more classes! I loved this class.
Roberts is great, i dont understand what everyone else is talking about, essays are direct and to the point, and he goes over everything 3 or 4 times, and he offers extra credit. just dont miss class and thats easy b/c you will find yourself excited to go to class and learn something
HAD ROBERTS AT QUEENS COLLEGE AND HES THE BEST. NOT A BALLBUSTER. GREAT PROFESSOR!
Roberts was horrific in returning essays in a timely manner which counted 50% of your grade. How do know what to improve on if you do not receive any feedback. Did not know what my grade was entering in the final quiz. Assignments consisted of two page summaries of boring useless readings. Lectures are interesting and entertaining. Aside from that
There should be more classes like this. Dr. Roberts was instrumental in getting the class to discuss the readings and their implications for real life. He goes over the reading well and has a good sense of humor. There are two quizzes that I thought were difficult but he curved them. The long papers are challenging but there's only two. Fun class
love this guy! even though attendance isnt mand, show up. he's funny, and explains the readings very well. include opinion in your papers, he likes that. i wish there were more classes i could take with him. makes coming to school actually enjoyable! if he learns your name tho, be prepared to be called on a lot to offer insight and opinion
Very nice teacher, extremely helpful! Gives tons of extra time to his students. A fair amount of writing, 2-3 page essay every other week and 2 6-10 page essays that incorporate the short essays. Plus 2 25 multiple choice tests that can be challenging. I learned so much in this class and it was FUN. Attendance is required to learn the material.
readings were confusing but he clarifies a lot in classes.
Prof. Roberts is one of the best teachers at State. He has a true passion for what he does and wants to see students succeed. The readings are tough, but he breaks them down in class. Also, take advantage of his office hours! Class consists of two page reviews of the readings done every other week, two 6+ page papers, and 2 multiple choice tests
Prof. Roberts is absolutly one of THE BEST at State. And I really hate this school and good professors are few and far between as I am sure you know. He cares about students and he understands we have lives outside of school. He is the kind of guy you want to go have a beer with after class. Lots of writing but the class is worth it & also fun!
Professor Roberts is funny and makes class interesting. Only 2 tests, essay form. It really depends on which TA you get, since they grade everything. Overall, it was an interesting and easy class. Definitely a good choice for a GE.
Roberts is a really cool guy. I think I went to class maybe 4 times throughout the entire semester and ended up with a B+. Attendance is FAR from mandatory, but his lectures are entertaining. Not a problem to miss classes because he uploads long, detailed notes onto Blackboard. Only downside is he can sound a bit communist!
Okay, so this class was pretty easy. Honestly, the TA you get kind of determines how much effort you should put into this course. I studied my ass off for the final and got a 98 on it. In the class, I got an A. It's not that hard; you just need to apply yourself to do well. His lectures are interesting. I recommend typing your notes. It helps a lot
Great professor, keeps the class moving and very interesting. Grade really depends on your TA class lecture not too mandatory but i suggest going. dont suggest missing breakout sessions though with TA. Books are not completely necessary i hardly touhed mine and got an A like i said depends on TA. Overall great teacher and fun class
I went to class like 5 times and two of them were the midterm and Final. I went to all the Small section with the TA and that really helps allot, because of attendance points. Really Easy.. studied the night before for both tests and got an A in the class haha.
interesting class, super easy
this course required a lot of reading and writing but Prof. Roberts did an excellent job explaining the material. He kept the class interesting and is did a great job teaching the course.
My absolute favorite professor & the reason I want to stay at SDSU for grad school. If you are a sociology major, you need to take classes with Professor Roberts. He is EXTREMELY knowledgeable & passionate about the subject. He succeeds at applying all concepts learned in class to life. On top of all this he is a real cool cat and loves surfing :)
Attend class and take good notes to do well on small essays. Go to his office hours to have him read your essays because he grades it right there and is helpful. His 2 quizzes were difficult but he curves. Got 99% on both my long essays which was a compare and contrast. I incorporated as much as I could from my notes. He is a very slow grader.
Great teacher!! very nice and he makes the class interesting! He gives late, redo and extra credit papers. Lectures are very helpful to explain readings, take good notes they will help on short papers. Two quizzes not very hard if you go to class there about 30 multiple choice questions always curved. two long papers grades them very easily!
Took SOCI2 with him when he was a guest professor at UCSD. Wasn't used to a large lecture and usually dismissed class early. You could tell he was extremely passionate about everything he talked about. You'll learn a lot about the world around you. Very helpful, posts extensive notes and comprehensive study guides. One of my favorite classes. :)
Great professor, he explains everything so well. Connects it to everyday things. He also organizes a beach trip for every session, pretty fun.
He has been the BEST professor I've taken so far! He's very knowledgeable & passionate about his lectures. The reading assignments can be a little hard to understand but he always has discussions about the readings in class and will deconstruct it to help you understand it thoroughly. As long as you show up & read, the essays will be a no brainer!
Roberts is a great teacher. He stays on topic and is very informative. His class is very easy because he keeps the class engaged and interactive. His texts are related to his assignments and significant to his lectures. I wish all my teachers were like Roberts. He's also very quick to respond to emails and is lenient and works with you if you.
The required readings were very difficult to understand. Roberts did a great job explaining when he explained. Spent too much time talking about cool stuff, watching videos, and internet surfing, but not helpful to the text readings.
Great professor. The texts are difficult but he knows how to explain things so they make sense. The topics are very interesting.
Professor Roberts is amazing. Very chill personality. The reading are difficult, but he helps you through it. He guides you through both short papers and essays. The quiz's are difficult, but study your notes and you should do fine. One of the chillest classes I have taken.
I love professor Roberts! Original texts are difficult but he manages to efficiently deconstruct them for his students. One of the best SOC professors at SDSU.
Roberts is one of my favorite professors at SDSU! Original texts are HARD to read but he breaks it down for you and makes it interesting. He gives great examples and is very funny. If you go to class and take notes you'll be fine, if not you'll fail. Short comment papers are due every 2 weeks, 2 quizzes and 2 long papers throughout the semester.
Interesting class but Prof. Roberts is very unprofessional and he thinks hes REALLY cool! The texts are a bit difficult to understand but he does a good job with breaking down the difficult contexts. Overall, good class but the professor tries too hard to be cool and he comes off being cheesy and low-class.
I always looked forward to attending his class. Very interesting information, good laughs, very difficult texts, but he breaks it down for you! He's also easily accessible! I always emailed him my papers before they were due, and he gave me great feedback, and got nearly perfect scores! Easy A if you put the effort in!
Freud, Marx, and Durkheim were all difficult to understand but he always broke down material and gave present day examples. Engaging lectures. Laid back and is always available to help. I would def take another class with him. Beneficial to always come to class because notes are used to construct papers throughout the semester.
Great class, great professor. Readings were difficult but he made them easy to understand and encouraged thoughtful class discussions. I always looked forward to class, but make sure you do the reading!
Roberts is the coolest professor I've had. Make sure you read the stuff he assigns or you won't pass the class. Also, go to his office hours if you have any questions and he'll gladly help you (which will improve your grade, trust me). Super funny & loves when you participate in class.
Roberts is awesome! He's very passionate and cares about his students and their understanding of the material. Great lectures. If you can, take every course he offers.
The best professor I have ever taken, I really wish he taught all sociology courses but sadly he doesn't. Very understanding if you can't make it to class, or if you need help. Always extends deadlines, always responds to your emails. Makes class fun and enjoyable. I looked forward to going to class
One of the best professors at State. Actually takes the time to know everyone's name and challenges you to really think during his lectures. He never talks down to you, instead he facilitates really invigorating conversation. You're going to have to read a good amount and some subject matter may be challenging at first but Roberts explains it well.
He is one of the best teachers ever! He does give homewrok but he gives you time to do it. He knows his topics very well and his lectures are discussions of the readings he assigns, he also gives a lot of visual examples, and there papers due that count as tests. He is very caring and is at the most dispossion of helping you if you need it.
The class was very hard to stay up. It was for summer so not the greatest. He makes people repeat what they say because he can't hear well. Always tells people to speak louder. Two papers and one extra credit. He changes things all the time the class is not hard but you have try to understand the material.
I have taken two classes with Roberts and he is hands down one of my favorite professors at SDSU! The things I have learned in his class have real life consequences and application. Attendance is not required but I actually enjoyed going to his classes as they are done in a discussion style, and bring up really interesting topics and ideas.
One of the best professors i have ever encounter. He creates a learning experience. Very accommodating. I looked forward to class although attendance wasn't mandatory.
This guy is honestly the best. Encourages discussion, very smart but makes the material extremely clear and accessible. He is casual enough to be approachable and really understanding if you genuinely need help or an extension. One of my favorite teachers in the department. Encourages participation and forges a sense of community in class.
This class was super easy. The books are hard to understand but Roberts makes it so plain that I have the exact notes for assignments. He cusses a lot, which I did not like. There is good discussion and a few short papers. Very easygoing Professor.
I love Roberts! clear on what he teaches. Theories are so hard to understand let alone the readings assigned in the class. He makes sure you understand the readings. There are films for extra credit. You have to write a lot of papers based on the readings. Announces paper deadlines in class only not on syllabus so do not miss class or make friends
What isn't there to like about the guy? His classes are super interesting, engaging, & mind-opening. He dumbs down books that the average person wouldn't understand, let alone voluntarily choose to read. To pass his class, you must try to attend & take notes. He's super chill & will make you see society through a diff frame ;D (Soc330, 401, & 460)
Roberts really knows his stuff. Great lecturer and lets the class critically think. Make eye-contact... be prepared to get called on. Down to earth and is always ready to challenge the status quo.
I LOVED THIS CLASS! Roberts is a little wild and unorganized, but he is so kind and laid back it really facilitates an environment that allows students to discuss freely. He cusses a lot, only assigns a few papers, and as long as you show up and take good notes, those papers basically write themselves.
Roberts is a great professor and have also taken his SOC460 course. Highly recommend him!
very relaxed class, graded on two assignments only, just a midterm and final both of which were group assignments are were fairly easy if you attended class and read the book. Professor goes over the material and will answer any questions.
Listen, all I have to say is that this man is the goat. Not only are his courses interesting, he doesn't. ask much of his students besides to read the books assigned and to show up. You'll never be bored in his courses.
Professor Roberts is one of my favorites in the SOC department. His lectures are really just class discussions and he gives a very neutral/informative stance on the theories taught. He gives a warning in the beginning of the semester that if you make eye contact with him he will call on you but he is very welcoming to everyone's thoughts.
Sociology 330: Cultural Origins of Surfing is one of the coolest classes I have ever taken in college. Roberts is also one of the coolest professors I've ever had. I HIGHLY recommend this class; it's a class you DO NOT want to miss out on! Roberts gives great lectures and shows a lot of great surfing/skateboarding documentaries. Truly a great guy!
This is a class that you will want to take over again after the course has finished. This was one of the best classes That I have ever taken. Great Professor, exciting materials, and meet and greet with the authors who wrote the book materials, which brings the text to life.
Class was a breeze, very heavy on the reading and videos. If you don't watch all the videos or do the readings you will fail the weekly quizzes. I slacked off in two quizzes and it Brought me down to an A minus. Also be aware that he takes his sweet time replying back to emails and you will hear from him within three days at like 2am.
Shows documentaries and movies about surf, in class, and many questions on the quizzes ask about very specific things about them and the book readings, so pay A LOT of attention and take notes. Other than that you're graded on the quizzes(usually 2 tries),midterm(1 MC + 2 papers)+final(either MC test or an art project). EC opportunites too.
Loved this class! Prof is clearly very knowledgeable and manages class discussions and lectures very well and keeps them interesting and engaging. Showed many interesting videos and documentaries. Graded only on a few tests and quizzes (multiple attempts allowed) but went over them with the class prior, and a short essay. Def take this class.
Attendance was not mandatory for this class but Roberts made me want to come in every day. His lectures were super interesting and we watched cool documentaries half of the time. All assignments and tests are online and asynchronous so they're not too hard at all. Would 100% recommend taking for a GE requirement.
for the love of god if u need extra units, take this class with roberts. coolest professor i have ever taken and literally hands you everything. has lots of extra credit but class consists of 5 quizzez, a 3pg final paper and midterm, which all are online. if you can, take this class.
Coolest professor. The lectures were engaging and fun. Had a great time in this class. Grade based on just a few essays spread out through the semester, and you'll do well on them if you pay good attention to his lectures. Highly recommend!!
PROTECT THIS PROF AT ALL COSTS.roberts is DOWN TO EARTH.and a genius, i bet a bunch of the students dont even know he has his PHD. IN SOCIOLOGY none the less...which is HARD af to get, he is a master at his knowledge about sociology; &because he is super chill ppl take it for granted. DONT. if u have the chance to take him DO IT! He is a soc guru!
I'm not even kidding, this professor is the reason I switched my major to Sociology. His lectures are incredibly interesting and he does a great job at engaging with the students in class. I'm taking SOC 331 for my last semester and I'm very excited to be in a class with Professor Roberts again. 100000% TAKE HIS CLASS!
Loveee professor roberts, super chill & in depth, chill about turning in your paper late if need be because it takes him a while to grade. He can be a little unorganzied sometimes he pushed our paper back 4 times so I wouldnt stress if you didnt finish one. His essays are simple but you NEED TO WRITE DOWN EVERYTHING HE SAYS IN LECTURE! 10/10 guy
Super chill, down to earth, gets you to be think outside the box and makes lectures super interactive and fun.
Review is for Soc 331: Great professor and class, attendance is not mandatory at all but I found myself actually wanting to go. Class is graded off very few things but they are very easy and the course material helps a lot. Two online tests and an essay. Highly recommend.
Prof Roberts' class was literally (and I do not say this lightly) the best class I have ever taken. His lectures are engaging and this was really the only class this semester that I actually felt motivated to go to and never skipped unless I was sick. I have never reviewed a professor before but felt compelled to. If you can, take this class!
This class was pretty easy! We had two essays which was easy to follow. His lectures are not mandatory but I recommend that you go to class because he gives really good notes/pointers for your essay which helped me out a lot. Other than that it's an easy class and he is not a tough grader.
One of the best classes I have ever taken, Roberts is compelling and brilliant, I looked forward to every class, and left every class excited by how much I had learned. Only 2-3 essays whole semester with clear grading criteria, helps to attend lectures as he explains the readings in a way easier for us to understand, otherwise ask others for notes
Genuinely one of the best professors at this school. Very smart and extremely funny. Only assignments/work in the class is 3 papers that are around 6-10 pages each, but if you go to class, you will not struggle at all. HIGHLY recommend taking Roberts, you'll have a great time
Has to be the most chill class I have ever taken in my life. Class is generally friendly as well due to Mike getting everyone involved in the discussion, but not in a weird way. I can't tell if this professor is stoned out of his mind and drank 2 venti Starbucks coffees or if he is coked up, but i'm here for it either way. Attendance not mandatory.
