GREAT teacher! makes understanding chemistry so much easier!
Quite possibly one of the greatest teachers I have ever methad He made chemistry fun and easy to understand. Gives great feedback and encouragment. Also viewed mistakes as strong positive progress to better understanding. If your trying, is what he looks for. The correct format he will work with you patiently and plesantly until you get it.
Great professor. He DOES NOT take attendance during lecture, however he DOES take attendance during lab. Homework and quizzes are all online. There are lab quizzes, which you'll have to study by reading the labs before going to lab. He's very thorough during lecture; Recommended.
If I could take his class for 306, I would in a heartbeat! He is definitely the best teacher for chem. I honestly had no chemistry experience at all, so didn't know what to expect. However, he made the class interesting and easy to comprehend. Easy A if you study well. Quizzes are easy and everything is online, so tutoring center was helpful
Chem is like learning a foreign language and some of the words are math equations. Its tough. Prepare to work hard. He's a fair grader. Offers review sessions before each exam (mostly scantron)and answers any questions. He was very patient with all my questions, and didn't make me feel like an idiot for not understanding right away! Great professor
Cool guy, laid back, looks like Paul Rudd lol. Chem is a lot of work, but Professor Russell is a great teacher and makes it understandable. I recommend him. He wants to help you succeed, so take advantage by asking questions. He is more than willing to help.
I don't like his teaching style: he seem to rush through lecture, his study guide is vague, and grade hella difficult on lab reports.
By far the best chem prof at CRC. The second half of the semester was harder than the first. There is a lot of material to cover in chem, so some parts did feel rushed, but that is what the textbook and office hours are for. I would take Dr. Russell again, but thank God I only need one semester of it! Booya!!
Prof Russell was very helpful and he is very easy to understand! There is quite a bit of homework but it actually helps your grade. He grades fairly and his lectures are very interesting.
Good class. Lots of homework. Exam problems are easier than the hw problems. I don't even like chem, but this class was interesting. Take Dr. Russell.
This was my first time taking a chemistry course in college since I last took chemistry a few years ago in high school. Professor Russell helped me out a lot. His lectures are okay, sometimes he goes fast but you should definitely ask questions and read the book. Hw, labs and lab reports are easy. Study for the tests! Mainly c's questions.
Awesome professor. Chem400 is a hard class. But he cares about all of his students and will take extra time to make sure you understand the ideas. He wants you to pass his class. He is always accessible outside of class. He also tends to tell funny stories during class. I loved him as a teacher. It's not an easy class but he will do everything to help you pass if you reach out to him.
Russell is one of the best professors I'll have in college. Tests each cover 3 chapters--taken in lab (3 hrs) so they're lengthy, but if you ask questions and do online hw/worksheets well before exams it's not bad. Extra credit opps, quick email replies, follows syllabus schedule. He tells a lot of funny life stories & remembers all his students.
Professor Russell was one of the best professors I had the opportunity to meet so far in college. I took him for Chemistry 305 and 400. His lectures are clear, he is personable, and genuinely cares about their futures and lives outside of class. Chemistry is a difficult subject, but he manages not only make it painless, but enjoyable. Take him!
Just do what he says. Easy A
Class was a bit challenging, mostly in 2nd half of semester due to the difficulty of the chapters, but despite that, it was taught very well. He really knows his stuff and he is good at explaining things in simpler ways. Great personality/sense of humor and always made lec./lab interesting. Online hw, few quizzes, 4 tests, 1 project. Read the book!
Best teacher so far!
Professor Russell is the best professor I've ever had. Not only is he funny and has great stories, but he really knows his stuff and knows how to explain it. He's also quite inspirational and encouraging. I wish all professors could be even half as good. The class is tough, but if you study and really put in all your effort, you'll do well.
Overall a good professor. Four exams and then a final. 2 lab practicals. Semester long project. 2 lab reports. Make sure you get the highest score on the homework. He gives you a week to do it. Gives you all the resources needed, you just need to use them and study. Hilarious professor and really cares about his students. I would take him again.
Professor Russell is great! He is friendly, funny, and chill. He makes you work for it. You need to come to lab prepared and get ready to work. His test is hard but it is all multiple choice and a few short answers. He lets you use notecards on the final ONLY. Overall, this class was hard but Professor Russell is GREATTTTT
Professor Russell is a literal gem. Chemistry is a hard subject for me and he somehow made it suck less which is a bloody accomplishment. He clearly cares for his students and is generally very kind and considerate. He also explains exactly what he expects from you which is very helpful.
Took him for both chem 400 & 401, he is one of the best science professors out there. He has lots of real-life experience and stories that are relevant to the material. Youll learn a lot from this class. Work hard, study, and pay attention in lecture/lab, an A is attainable
Gotta read the book
I took Russell for 400 & 401. He is the most understanding professor I've ever had. He truly cares about his students and wants you to succeed. He explains chemistry very clearly and easily, so an A is attainable. The tests are fair and he gives study guides. He is so sweet, I'm gonna miss him after this semester. I highly recommend taking him!!
This was the first semester I had Russell for my CHEM class. One word to describe his class: AWESOME. Hes extremely funny and approachable. Despite the fact that chemistry is considered as a dry subject, his lectures were never boring to me. Thank Prof. Russell for making CHEMISTRY so fun to learn. Ill definitely miss him after this semester.
One of the best teachers I've ever had. Very funny and entertaining; makes the class more interesting. You can easily pass this class if you put the effort into it. He explains concepts very well and tests aren't too hard.
Mike is Mike awesome !
I drive an hour to sit in his chem lecture. He knows is craft inside out. I am blessed. Thank you Prof. Russell I have learned a lot from you.
You rock man!
Professor Russell is outstanding! He makes it easier to comprehend the material. His lectures aren't excellent and detailed. He takes the time to explain and give examples from the book. He has study guides and posts his lectures on CANVAS. Most of all, he has a great sense of humor. GL
Great lectures. Great teacher. Best teacher to learn Chemistry from !!
Mike is a straight BOSS! His explanations of such complex subjects are amazing! All my other Chem classes I was just memorizing, now I actually understand (which makes Chem easier). You know you should take him, so why are you on RMP? just be hopeful that you can get into his class.
Russell is an amazing chemistry professor. I would take him again in a heartbeat. He is funny and intelligent. He will definitely be the best chemistry teacher you can have at this school. I passed easily without studying.
Dude ROCKS!
Best Chem teacher in Losrios. He makes Chem easy and he is a really good guy genuine!
Mike is outstanding with a great sense of humor! Lectures are excellent and detailed. He takes the time to explain and give examples from the book with lots of practice problems. I am very glad I took his class.
Professor Russell made chemistry really simple and was really patient when we had questions. He only lectured on things that you needed to know and never tested you on things he didn't teach. He also made lecture interesting by telling us about his career before teaching. Highly recommend Professor Russell.
His lectures are amazing, he truly makes chemistry so fun to learn. Funny and really approachable. The online HW is to say the least, not very pleasant, you'll have to suffer through it. There is extra credit on exams and quizzes. Hard to do bad in his class. Highly recommend Russell.
Professor Russell is a respected and nice guy. Unfortunately he is not nice in his grading. Although the chemistry is not a easy subject but still he makes more harder with his grading. If you want to pass the class, you must to study super and super hard otherwise forget about his class.
Not only is he a great teacher, he also made the 7:30am lecture bearable by telling interesting stories from his past which relate back to chemistry. Although he can be a tough grader, if you take the time to study you will pass this class easily. Russell is a great teacher and I highly recommend taking his class, if you can get in!!!
professor Russell is a nice instructor, but I would rather have good grades than good professor. he makes the class seem easy, but his test are super hard, and heavy. he has high expectations, which really annoyed me.
Don't trust on these comments, 90% of the comments made by the prof's faculties. He's so tough you have to memorize a LOT in his class. There is no explanation on the quizzes, nothing will be given. Lab is also very hard . He goes so fast on the lecture slides, and will never ask you if you have any questions or not.
It truly didn't work out for me. Russel is a tough grader and tests are very heavy he rushes through slides and goes. very fast. I would not take him because doesn't care if you pass or don't. He thinks he owns chemistry and is very annoying. All the efforts that you make are times zero in his class.
Let me make it clear Prof. Russell's class is primarily test heavy, and there are quizzes that are based on the material you learn every week. He requires you to read the textbook but I didn't even open the damn thing. Pay attention during lectures, ask a lot of questions, and practice till your heart blows out. Trust me it isn't that hard
Professor Russell is a tough grader, but also a very nice instructor. I recommend asking question, if his instruction seems unclear. he is willing to help all of his student achieve their desired grades .
Wow what an absolute gem. He teaches very well as chemistry can be quite challenging. He is so genuine, funny and personable. However, tests lab practicals and the final were very long and challenging. He really requires you to think.. How the ?s are written on exam are not guaranteed to be as you've seen in lecture, book or practice problems.
Had him for 400 (A) and 401, genuinely wish he taught O-chem. He will give you partial credit on everything, so he really encourages you to try your best on the exams, his grading super merciful. I learned so much I was impressed, and he's easy to befriend! This man is an angel, super patient, and he genuinely cares. Go to office hours! He devoted!
Most of the exam questions are emphasized in lectures. Exams are tough, but doable.
Do not take this class with him! Rushed through slides barely did example problems. Always went over the class time and expected us to figure out the last things he didnt cover because he ran out of time. Hes not helpful I only took his class because the professors I wanted for chem ere unavailable! I regret this guy especially with being online.
Professor Russel is a great Chemistry professor. He is willing to answer any questions you have and tells stories during lectures which makes the class interesting. Tests are tough but he sometimes offer bonus points to boost you grade up.
Professor Russell is an amazing teacher. He makes it a priority for students to understand the material and provides a lot of example problems that may show up on tests. There are four exams and one final. As long as you do the homework and attend lectures, you will pass this class with flying colors.
Adore! Super understanding and had a grace period for almost all of the assignments. Wouldn't recommend taking this class if you have poor time management skills. Tests were kinda difficult but all that takes is some studying. Only failed because I put no effort in, if you pay attention then you pass. Would definitely retake for a better grade.
Professor Russell is a really good guy and extremely down to earth. Sit at the front, ask questions & participate during lab days and it'll be fun. His class is not hard, but it will definitely take a bit of elbow grease to do well on the exams. Definitely need to read the textbook + take notes on his lectures to really get the material.
Professor Russell is an AMAZING teacher! You can really tell that he loves what he does and he puts a lot of effort into his teaching. He definitely cares about your success and he offers extra credit. His lectures are very helpful and he also gives very generous partial credit on exams. Although this is a hard class, he made it manageable.
I loved taking Prof. Russell this semester. Tests are somewhat different from HW problems, but that is to be expected. Prof. Russell is a guy you could definitely chat with about anything, and he treats his students like his friends. The class is hard at times but as long as you do the HW and pay attention then you'll be fine.
Nice guy, but very hard to pass his class if you're not the best at chemistry. I asked questions all the time and there was really no helpful feedback. I recommend him if you already did well in chem 400. He's not very merciful at all.
Professor russ was decent. Course was very content heavy with lots of lectures. Gave frequent pop quizzes to make sure we stayed on top of homework. Heavy exams with questions similar to the homework. Homework was long but helped a lot when it came time to take exams. Overall a fair professor with easy to understand guidelines and expectations
Professor Russell is excellent, very personable and communicates very well. Grading criterion are very fair with a nice distribution of points throughout the semester so no worries over heavily weighted exams. Weekly homework quizzes were used to replace required homework submissions. The quizzes are straightforward if you listen in lecture though.
This was an awesome class. He goes through tons of examples in lecture, so you never are really thrown any curve balls. The labs were interesting, and the exams were fair, but intense. You have 4 exams, lab, and quizzes, so your grade is pretty evenly distributed, and he gives some extra credit. Put in some effort and you'll do fine.
Prof Russell is awesome! He is a very helpful and caring teacher. He jokes and some times teases you but believe it he is amazing! If you are looking for an EASY prof SORRY he is not for you. His exams are heavy but labs are kind of fine.
Incredibly difficult professor to have for CHEM 400 if you are not the best at it. He moves pretty fast during lectures and lab. Very content-heavy and a lot to remember. Exams are tough and he doesn't give you reminders for exams. He's a nice guy to have as a professor, but his class is hard. He quizzes you on what you learned in lecture/pop quiz
I took Prof Russell for Spring 2023 and forgot to write this review. Amount you study & comprehend determines your grade. Grade reliant on 4 exams (lowest is dropped). Light on grading, tries his best to give partial credit. Labs every week/ final lab exam. Bi-weekly pop quiz. No clue how I passed but I'm glad I took him. Funny guy& understandable.
Was nervous coming in since I barely passed high school chem, but he was the best teacher. Lectures go by fast but the notes are online. The labs were all straight forward and if you can follow the format of an equation you will be fine. Exams are based on homework which isn't required but recommended. If I studied I would have easily got an A.
Lectures are long and detailed but he posts them so you can access at any time. Tests are long and tough but if you prepare, are easy to get high grades on. He does not assign mandatory homework but gives problems for those who need them. Class is calculation heavy but he goes over a ton of examples of how to do everything in lecture.
Professor Russell is passionate about chem and student success in class. Always willing to answer questions and show how to solve problems. Going to office hours is super helpful as well. Even though homework is not required, it's the most helpful in preparing for exams. He makes learning enjoyable and is full of practical life advice.
Professor Russel is a conscientious teacher, known for his kindness and friendly manner. With a passion for teaching, he puts in considerable effort to ensure his students learn and expects their hardwork in return. I took Chem400 long time ago, and my major is not related to Chem. Luckily, I worked hard and got an A.
Great teacher. Before we started our experiment he would demonstrate how to complete 1 trial and afterwards, he would guide us through calculations by performing some himself. lecture was good, went through many examples of the material we were covering. Most of lecture is on tests(5 exams; 1 lab,3 regular, Final), but some of hw is on tests. DO HW
This professor is a silly guy. He really wants to help his students and give everyone a chance to pass. Just talk to him and he'll help you, its the only way I passed... The lab ran until 4:35 but I can probably count on my fingers how many times we stayed that late. Take him if you want to pass and have a good time in chem!!!
Took Chem 300 in the summer, it's at an average class difficulty. Cross reference your notes with the slides to make sure you didn't miss any information. You don't need to know everything on the slides, he'll tell you what to ignore. Gives you relevant tables and charts on tests. Study concepts and the formulas (and how to do them), also DO THE HW
The most amazing professor I've ever had. In the past, I failed to like chemistry; but, ever since I started taking his class, it has turned into one of my favorite courses.
Professor Russell is the best! - Detailed lectures - Demonstrates how to do each lab and provides example calculations -He tells you EXACTLY what to expect on each test. - Frequently spends time doing calculations that are guaranteed to be on the exams. -Very helpful, quick to answer emails, and even held a review session on a Sunday for us!
He explains the lecture very well in detail and gives out examples. You will do practice problems in the labs. The exams can be somewhat easy or challenging depending on your previous chem classes and material knowledge. He will tell you what you will be tested on for quizzes and exams. Go to his office hours for any help. Do homework problems.
His exams weren't necessarily hard themselves, but the material itself was. His labs are good and he grades fairly. You would like his teaching style if you take a lot of notes. If you practice the homework (not mandatory, recommended) you will be ready for the exams and quizzes he gives. Great stories too, almost made me switch majors.
Extremely good at teaching chem. Chemistry is a hard subject, but he makes it a lot easier for students. You still need to put in effort however. Does not require homework, but is highly recommended for exams. Is extremely deserving of a high rating and that big waitlist
soso amazing and kind!! made chem so easy to understand and exams were pretty straightforward from practice questions. never studied much, went to lecture and succeeded! one of the sweetest professors ever :)
I took him for Spring of this year, and he was an AMAZING professor. He was definitely hands-down the best prof I've ever had, and his class was the opposite of boring every meeting day. I will say that his class is hard, but you WILL succeed if you try. He takes his class and your success seriously, despite himself being a silly and funny guy!
Honestly one of the best professors! I wish he taught Organic Chemistry. Had funny, engaging lectures filled with past stories. He is lighthearted, realistic, and also considerate of the class especially when selecting exam review dates based off of student feedback. Responds to emails quick. Take him if you can!
Russell is an amazing professor for chemistry! Personally I thought his teaching was really engaging and he even sometimes connects certain topics with stories from his work as a vet. He does have weekly quizzes in labs and sometimes will call random people BUT he doesn't do it all the time. On exams, at least for 400, he will allow cheat sheets
Future student, Professor Russell is a nice person & passionate on teaching chem.He does share many life stories in which Lec. time goes by fast. However, his tests are long, and hard. NOT EASY. His Quiz's are doable. And your grade can go from an A to D fast. HW is assgn. but not collected. STUDY REALLY HARD. Your grade depends a lot on exams.
I really loved having Prof Russell. I took him Spring semester in 2025 and I tried taking his Fall 2025 but didn't get him for 401, my current prof is so bad and it made me miss Professor Russell. He is super caring and his lectures are really digestible. Homework is optional but do it! Sometimes they're the same questions as the quiz.
Not choosing him as ur professor is a mistake! He makes chem extremely easy. I got a C, averaging a D every midterm and final exam. Mind you, that is because I studied last minute due to ADHD. If you stay on top of work and actually study as recommended, you're guaranteed an A! I've never been at anything like chem or math & this was my fave class!
Rushes through a lot of material. There r 2 typed lab reports, & a few pre-labs in a regular notebook. Lab manuals free to students. Some quiz's r given/wk. Exams r hard not gonna lie heavy load of random problems/calculations to finish 1 hour aprox. 45 problems.
3 Midterm Exams +1Lab Exam +1Cumulative Final. Do the homework Qs! Its a lot but it'll help you understand the content and guarantee you a good grade on every exam, the exams are not easy but if you study and get help when needed you'll pass. He's an amazing professor for 400, there's no reason why you shouldn't take him besides the long waitlist!
