Good teaching style.
HARD TESTS!!! He is helpful with questions but test format is hard!
Holy-wah! Tests are impossible!
I was getting a 4.0 until I took his course. I struggled the whole time and barely got a C. All I got out of his lectures was blah, blah, blah. The tests were absolutely horid. Definitely take Hoeksema instead.
This teacher is HORRIBLE I did so baad in his class. He is so confusing and jumps all over the place. I can't stand him, and he thinks he is really fun too, and he's not.
Great teacher, i really liked him alot but i noticed that kids that dont have any biology background do horrible. If your in pharmacy dont worry about it cause you should do fine, if you in some other program. LOOK OUT...
This is the hardest class I have EVER taken!! Ryan's a great professor though. He is just very difficult. I would not recommend taking his course unless you truly understand Medical Microbiology or just like to be tortured!!!
Yeah his tests were hard, but he had like 17 point curves. I did not get anything below an A in his class. I figured out my grade without the curve and I really should have gotten a C. He is also funny too. Great teacher. I would take him again.
sucks
Wow, he's the hardest teacher I ever had. If you taking his class buy a taperecorder. His test are imposible to take. Stay away from this teacher! His leactures are okey, but when it comes to test he uses hardest examples and small things. Sample question

YIKES. The tests will kill you, and if they don't, his dry sense of humor will. Be prepared to study like crazy and still only get a C. At the start of the class he will try and convince you that you arent smart enough for that class. DO NOT LISTEN
I hate him, he tricks you on a test, the stuff that's on a test he mentions in 2 sec. 99% of his lecture is about little side stories(that no one cares about) and 1% is the stuff that's on a test. AVOID him at all cost.
Hardest teacher I ever had, I did better in Chem 321 and 322 than in his class, test are imposible. If you are in pre-pharmacy, plan on retaking this class. Labs are the only easy part of this class.
Favorite class ive ever taken. I loved this guys class his test kinda messed up but i Aced all of them. If your in Pre-Pharm this guys easy. IF you not get ready to struggle
Ok if the test is going to be as picky as spelling then maybe he should spell the words out in class. Dipiclinic acid... Come on. Well whatever
I loved Ryan. Take good notes, study them well, and you will do fine. Everything on his exams comes from the notes. He curves by about 15% and gives extra credit. He's really fun and makes lab is easy. You get out of lab in 30 min usually. Easiest bio i've taken yet.
I love ryan! He's funny and his labs are really easy, it's just that his tests will kill you! They are from the notes so take EXCELLENT notes and study them hard and a lot and you should do well in the class!!
I loved this class! He makes the class interesting, and his dorky sense of humor is hilarious. The tests are right from lecture notes (you don't even need the book), he lets you tape lectures, which definitely helps. He usually adds at least a 10% curve to each test and labs are a breeze.
Honestly everyone on here that is complaining never studies. His class is tough, and his tests are extremely hard, but its a good class if you want to learn the stuff. You must go everyday, its not policy, but its almost required for passing. His sence of humor is funny. He is a realy good teacher!
He is nice but should try to be less hard with his exams even if they are straight off the notes. He does also need to improve as an advisor. Thats to him informing me at the last minute that I didn't need a certain course for my major, ruin the chance for taking a course I did need for my program.
need to pay attention and attend all of the lectures. he has tricky exams though. need to make sure you study atleast 4 days in advace. STUDY GROUP
Ryan is a wonderful guy, he just has a very hard class. I strongly suggest getting in a study group right away and count on your grade severely dropping throughout the semester. Also, never schedule for the 1st lab. The quizzes are all the same and you can get the answers from earlier labs.
This professor is extremely intelligent. I ended up with a C- in the class because I hardly ever went to class and I never studied. This class is difficult but if you put ALOT of effort into you, you should do fine.
i never once opened the book, or looked at the notes, and i got an A in the class. He talks about gohhnereha of the eye, and whipping your bottom in the wrong direction. :-D~

he says things in a way that will make you remember them forever. this is one class that i have retained all the material i learned 2 years later.
Great teacher !!! Class can be intense but Will help when needed !!! Do study questions and go 2 lectures and u r destined 2 do well !!! Love this guy ... take in summer if can !!!
makes microbiology 10 times harder than it needs to be.
if your pre-pharm take him, so easy. just write good notes and study them. tests are matching, and just matching. give extra credit on test. labs quick and easy. if you do bad, you might want to try memorizing with more effort cause thats all it is. easy easy easy
Advoid at all costs unless your willing to throw money away to just have to take it again, if your failing his class he dont seem to care....just says well some people have taken this class 3 times and still dont pass it. Now come on seems like that would bother him if he was a good teacher....if you go to his office it is of no help at all!!!!!!!!
Dr. Ryan is an awesome professor.I suggest getting a tape recorder for his lectures, it really helps! Take good notes and you should be fine if you study! He also has a curve and gives up to 5 extra credit points on all tests.
good teacher. not an easy a, there is a little studying involved but its not bad at all. he tells you exactly what will be on the tests, encourages you to tape the lectures, labs are super fast and he's got a way of making things stick in your head. lots of stories that are related. very good. take if possible.
He is about as useful as a solar powered flashlight.
Doesn't require a textbook but recommends a tape recorder, curves every exam up to 15 points, labs hardly ever go the whole time... all in all a pretty good class!
he sort of rambles a lot and i'm not sure what he says if they are notes or not just a little confusing.
Good teacher, but tough. It definitely helps to record lectures because he talks fast. Study hard for tests and you will do ok. It's not easy unless you put in the time. Exams are matching, but don't be fooled, they're tough.
Ryan has lots of stories for you to understand what he is talking about. He is helpful and emphasizes on what will be on exams. Your job, to do exactly what he tells you and you will ace his exams. Curves are very high (15%) so if you get 75, you'll end up at 90% and bonuses. Take him over other Franklund. He only has exams, no weekly quizes, etc
I love love love Dr. Ryan. His class was so much fun, he had great stories and gave super good notes. His class was my hardest during my semester, but i loves it. The best way to ace it, is to make charts, and get into study groups. He's so laid back, anyone will love him.
Amazing professor! He gives the practical application of what you're learning, showing how it is important in the clinical setting. He is extremely knowledgeable and tells you waht to study for the test, so if you study what he tells you, you will do fine.
Brilliant man! He loves what he does and definitely makes class interesting. I have to record all of the lectures though to make sure I get all the info. He talks fast. Make sure to make charts and study a long time before the test. He is always willing to help and will tell you almost exactly what is on the test. The curve is huge too so that help
worst teacher i have ever had. in fact, calling him a teacher is an insult to teachers everywhere. he just walks around and tells stories the whole time and expects you to compile your own class notes. im sorry that my tuition money is now in his pocket.
I loved his teaching style. He repeats the main concepts to make sure that you write them down if you didnt get them before. In lab he's very clear and straight forward. He tells you what to do then you do it and can leave. I highly recommend him.
His lectures are awesome. He makes things clear and is funny. It's not dull. He expects you to know everything. His tests are extremely hard, so make sure you spend a ton of time studying. But he curves like crazy, which helps a lot.
Dr.Ryan's teaching style does not work for at least 66% of the class they dropped or failed (and he will tell you this). I took my lab with him too and 35% of people passed with a C or higher. This professor will get off topic and will not be able to cover all of the material required before the test. I heighly reccomed not taking this professor.
He talks too fast so you can't write enough notes because before you finish writing one thing, hes talking about another. His tests are very hard and doesn't give any assignments so you're whole grade is based on exams and lab. I would not recommend this professor
He definitely knows his stuff, and the history that goes behind it. Take notes fast b/c he talks fast and the tests are kinda hard. Just pay attention in lab if you go, (you dont have too) and the labs are super easy. I always get out in a half hour.
I really liked this class and thought the material was really interesting. The only thing that bothered me was the difficult way Dr. Ryan gave his lectures and the format of his tests. He doesn't follow the text book and the questions on the test are pretty tough. It's definitely a class that you have to work at. I felt frusturated most of the time
Not recommended!! He goes off topic and does not follow the book!
He is one of my favorite professors even though he goes off topic it some how always works back to the topic at hand. Great guy and I wish i could have him again!!!
So tough, I had to drop his class. He goes off topic alot, offers no extra credit & your grade is based on lab (kind of easy) & test grades. Tests are graded on a huge curve because everyone does poorly, but he does nothing to fix his teaching for the next test.
His class was difficult. He talks really fast during lectures. His tests are impossible. He puts stuff on the tests that he does not cover in class. Its hard to know what to study for the tests
This is a really hard class. But if you study and go to his office to look at tests and ask question you can pass. He curves every test to a class average of 73% and gives 5 bonus questions. He goes off topic. If you have lab it's mandatory but you get practice for the practical and he sets everything up and you can take pictures too study.
super hard and expects you to help yourself
I would not recommend taking this class Freshman year. I took it Freshman year, and still had Senioritis from HS. This class is a type of class you have to study everyday in order to pass. I found that out the hard way after the first test. As long as you work hard and study your butt off, you should be able to pass this class with at least a B-.
He is a nice man, he is funny, and knows his stuff very well. This is a very hard class as it is, and he does get on tangents, tests are very hard, but if you put in the work, you will learn a lot, and I got a 96% in the class, but worked very hard for my grade. You must study for this class every day, but it IS possible to do well in this class!
This class is close to impossible without having an SLA section with Kim Andrus. It's nice that he tells you what sections are on the exams, but he does not explain things clearly. His humor is great, though! And he always wears cool ties.
Prof Ryan knows what he's talking about and is a nice guy, but he is way too hard. He knows his tests are hard and thinks its funny or something. All of the tests are matching with a both or none answer which makes it hard too. I would not recommend him. His lab is easy though!
Dr. Ryan is a great guy. The class (and his tests) were tough, but he prepares you very well if you pay attention and keep good notes. He's willing to answer any questions you have. He likes to tell side stories, but they usually pertain to the material he's covering. He knows his tests are hard, and curves very generously.
Dr. Ryan class is hard but he lets you know that coming into the class. His test are difficult but if you take good notes, tape his lectures attend all classes and study hard you will pass them.
This is THE hardest class I have ever taken!! Dr. Ryan's test's are close to impossible and he talks way to fast during lecture that it's hard to take good notes. I also go to SLA which is the ONLY reason i'm passing the class.
His lectures didn't make sense and he doesn't do very well at staying on topic during lecture. The information expressed in the hand outs is not clearly made know during lecture. Very confusing over all!
This is probably the hardest class I have ever taken. I was a straight A student until this class came along. I felt like I knew everything backwards and forwards until he handed out the exam. The questions aren't straight forward, and he tries to trick you with his questions. Good luck to those who take this class!
Is his class more challenging than most? Yes. However, he tells everyone in the beginning if you think just showing up to class and taking notes will get you an A, you're wrong. His class takes dedication, and time. He is a good professor and it is not impossible to come out with an A if you are willing to work for it.
I'm a Nursing student. But taking this class makes me not want to be in healthcare anymore. Very difficult taking notes, speaks way to humanly fast to understand, and the tests are crazy. All I can say is...be careful Nursing students. He's very difficult.
This is by far the hardest class I have ever taken. If it wasn't for Dr. Ryan's curve on the tests and going to SLA i would not have passed this class with the grade i needed. He knows the material is hard and thinks its funny. I definitely recommend kim andrus for lab! She is great and understands Ryan is a terrible instructor. GOOD LUCK!
This was the hardest class I was taking at Ferris. Dr.Ryan does not help you at all and when he lectures he sometimes rambles on and on about things that DO NOT relate to the test at all. He pushes back the tests A LOT, if not all of them, and the only reason why I was passing with a C+ was because of my lab professor.
I though Dr. Ryan was an excellent teacher. Very knowledgeable and yet sometimes vague on particular subjects. As long as you make study tables, watch tegrity, and attend SLA every week, you will pass with the grade you expect.
The reason most think this class is so difficult is because it is a prerequisite, therefore most students take it as an incoming freshman. It is a lot more difficult than any high school course but that's normal for college. If you study a little bit every week you'll do fine. If you can't handle this you're in trouble because it gets a lot harder.
He's really good! you just need to do what he tells you to do and you will pass.
Dr. Ryan is a good teacher, BUT you have to work for it and accept the challenge.
The class is based off of only 4 lecture tests (they are tough) & a lab practical. HIGHLY RECOMMEND going to sla!. & NOT missing lecture or sla. He is actually pretty funny, not boring. But the material itself is pretty hard. *Have to buy your own scantrons* @ the bookstore. **Apply previous lecture knowledge to current. It'll help*
Dr. Ryan can be confusing but if you go to SLA which I highly recommend you will be fine. He curves every test we had up to a 15% curve. He test in a way that I've never seen before but I kinda liked it. He tells lots of stories which usually help you understand the material
Dr. Ryan is a good professor, but you have to WORK for it. He is strait up with you from the very beginning of the semester that his class is not a cake walk. You have to attend lab/lecture, listen to tegrity, make charts, and attend SLA. If you do these things, as well as study with friends, this class is passable. You just have to work for it.
Dr. Ryan was my favorite professor this semester. He is very straight forward with you on the first day of lecture/lab and knows this course is not easy. You will have to work for it but it is very doable. He is such a brilliant guy. IMPORTANT: he rambles and you think its unrelated to lecture, IT IS RELATED SO PAY ATTENTION. i would reccommend him
He curves all of his tests to a class average of 73%. We got mainly 10-22% curves on the 4 tests.
Makes class obscenely hard and does not seem to care for his students. He has gotten complacent in his tenure. Do not take him under any circumstances. This is an optometry school class so I had already gotten a degree in bio and had micro before and it does not help. I've heard the same thing about his undergraduate class. Worst prof ever.
Very dry lectures. His lectures are identical to lectures from years and semesters past. You basically need to memorize everything he says in order to do well on the tests. PAY ATTENTION especially to his little side stories because they'll help you remember the most random things that he'll ask about in his exams. Very challenging course.
USE SLA. If they have it, it will be extremely useful. It's the only way I passed. Also, use Tegrity. He records all of his lectures, and it helps to listen to them a second time to pick up on things you missed, because he is kind of boring. He can be kind of inappropriate.. if you don't go to lecture, just listen to the recordings.
One of the worst experiences with professors i've had. He's a cool guy, but not the best professor. He's very educated in this subject, but assumes that you are too and teaches with the big biology words that he knows. I would avoid this professor.
Dr. Ryan is a great professor. Lectures can get a little boring but EVERYTHING he talks about it relevant even if it seems like he's rambling. He tells you exactly what is going to be on the exam, extra credit on all exams and has a curve so getting A's is very possible if you study! DO NOT buy the book
He is a great person but I felt like I didn't learn anything in the class.
Don't buy the book, you'll never use it. Tests were difficult, but he always curved. I wouldn't have passed the class without the SLA worksheets because the class is so lecture heavy and the powerpoints aren't very organized. Boring lectures that cover a lot of content. You will have to study a lot outside of class.
Get ready to study. He gives you a copy of each exam, with just the answers, so You have an idea of what will be on the test. There are 4 lecture exams and 1 lab practical. Highly recommend re-listening to each lecture, you can pick up a lot of missed information.
He was a very nice professor. However, the grade was based on 4 tests, and a lab exam. The tests were very hard. He added about a 10% curve on each test, but no study guides were provided.
Class is graded by 4 tests & a lab practical. Hes very nice & encourages you to go to SLA & listen to Tegrity. Textbook is recommended, & is helpful for some extra reading or studying for concepts that you may have trouble with. He hands out study guides, which are super helpful. I recommend going to SLA.
