easy if u took chem b4--doesnt teach, but rather puts up ex. probs to do

Can be tough but fair...
Holds 3 hour review sessions and practice quizzes before the midterms and finals. Brings in great experiments to show to the class. Many opportunities at extra credit.
easy professor.. he is fair..
He was a very good professor when i took it in 2001. The course however is based heavily on understanding of the concepts. Mostly calculations on exams (multiple choice). He is an easy grader but remember he has quizzes so don't miss them. =)
his practice tests are very similar to his actual tests

tons of fun, my favorite out of the whole 6-series, dresses well =)
A nice guy, took us out to dinner!
Excellecnt teacher, do the homework and show up for reviews and youll get a good grade, if that doesnt help he give many opportunited fo rextra credit...
Great teacher. Explains well. lectures are exciting. Tests are fair.
GREAT professor! he's SO much fun! his lectures pass by like a lightening!! seriously, me and my classmates were saying "nono, please go on" when he said "Okay, that's it for today". seriously, you dont know where the 50 mins has gone
Extremely hard to follow and take notes. Skips around a lot. Exams are really difficult. Study sessions are helpful to some degree.
He's definitely a keeper. Entertaining, informative and interesting. Many oportunities for xtra credit. It's not a class you would sleep through. The midterm review sections are VERY helpfull, and the midterms are very much like the practice exams.
very cool teacher
Awsome Teacher. His TA's are great too, especially Lev.
Good guy, experiments are fun. Read the book and do the homework and you'll be fine on the quizzes. For midterms and final, DO THE REVIEW!!! You will definitely get an A or B if you understand the review. Do all the extra credit, it matters in the end.
He's a great guy and his lectures are fun because he gives away prizes. Sometimes I wish he did more with chem than prizes. The tests aren't easy, but practice exam is useful. Gives lots of extra credit. READ THE BOOK!!! Get Lev as your TA.
Awesome professor. Practice exams nearly identical to actual exams. Absolute grading scale. Lots of extra credit chances. Provides more than enough time to write exams. Prepares students well for future chem classes.
Fun prof. Had class in freshman year. Not hard at all. Fun demos and gives away stuff to encourage participation. Wanna take class again for fun!
Great sense of humor, engaging. His analogies illustrate confusing concepts well. Tests are on the long side, but are fair, mirroring the homework and quizzes. Frequent extra credit is a plus!
Great prof, wihs he taught the enitre 6 series
cool teacher w/ example exams
teh b3st!!!1
His lectures are actually fun, he has a good sense of humor, and he actually gives extra credit. Definately a recommended prof, except his tests are massive. Other than that I enjoyed his class, wish he taught the whole 6 series.
Entertaining, Sweet, Fantastic
Prof. Sailor is the most awesome Prof. UCSD currently has going for it. Good humor, engages the class (even in large class environment), and teaches effectively.

he is awesome and he gives out prizes for participating!

Really nice teacher. I thought he was hot! I got an A
Man Sailor rocks! He is a fun teacher who clearly explins everything he teaches. And in addition to lecturing he always throws out funny jokes and makes fun of students and his TA's. He's a fun guy who i'd highly recommend taking. His class was always enjoyable
His lectures suck and he talks at a level that is so much higher than yours and it's hard to understand him. He tries to get you to screw up on the quizes by throwing really hard questions on there. Don't take him
great professor, probably the ONLY chem class i've enjoyed. gives out cute prizes (mini beakers and such) and sometimes kewl ones (ie mini blowtorch) for participation. highly recommended.
This is a very fun chemistry class. He does indeed give out queer prizes such as syringes and beaker shotglasses. His notes are posted online so the pace is according to your own. Always looking for volunteers to do examples and experiments, but you get a prize at the end. Quizzes are typically okay as long as you understand the material well.
Sailor is an AWESOME teacher. Lectures were interesting, tests were manageable, he gives weekly quizzes, but it's on stuff you should know after doing the HW. TA's were all really fun and knew what they were talking about. Demonstrations are pretty cool. Don't let the quantum mech at the beginning of the quarter scare you! It gets easier.
Hard quizzes, you really need to study for his class. Gives a good class curve though and lots of extra credit. Lectures don't make sense, but hes a genius and he speaks really fast.
weekly straightforward quizzes and lectures are full of experiments. he gives out cool prizes if you volunteer up at the board. funny too.
Not a very good lecturer (take Sawrey if you want a professor who lectures well and makes sense to you), his class is entertaining, mainly does experiments and gives out prizes, extra credit every now and then, weekly quizzes are doable (must go to section) and MUST READ BOOK! do your homework and you'll be fine. you dont really have to go to class
The quizes may OCCATIONALLY be somewhat tricky, but common -- he gives out so much extra credit! And 9 out of the 10 quizes are reeeeally easy!!! If you're a major slacker you could easily fail -- but common people, it's an engineering-level chemestry class! and 85% and above is an A! Take him though, very funny and entertaining guy.
he mumbles during lectures (which are pointless) i miss class half the time and do fine without it. but do read the book and do go to section. this prof has high ratings only b/c his TAs explain things so well.
Lectures unclear. Mumbles during lecture, hard to understand him. Lectures not very organized, he jumps from topic to topic. Only good thing is that he gives exra credit.
Mumbles during class and sounds like he just wants to get through the material even though he loves the subject. May come off intimidating at first but after a few office hours, he's a good man. Quizzes are pretty straight forward as long as you pay attention to the lecture notes/problems and do your reading/hw. I did well cuz of the ta's.
Mumbles a lot, so sit near the front if u want to understand him. Makes funny jokes during class, but thats about the best it gets. Substance-wise, his lectures r no good. Not a very helpful person. Get a good TA and u'll survive. Quizzes every Friday make up ur grade.
he may be entertaining, sweet, and fantastic, but only take this class if you can learn independently. if youve taken chem before, this class is good, if not, find another prof.
Everyone seems to love him. At first I didn't like his style that much but I got used to it and this turned out to be a super easy class. Tons of extra credit. He seems more interested in humoring the class than explaining everything you need to know but you still learn a good amount.
Easy A if you study. Make sure you read the book and do all the Homework problems. Quiz is base on the HW problems...so make sure you understand the hw questions.
Professor Sailor is a great professor! He has a good personality, he's funny, nice, and helpful. Going to lecture helps so make sure you go and take good notes, he gives out prizes for volunteers, and he gives a lot of extra credit. His weekly quizzes aren't THAT bad, and it helps to keep you from procastinating and cramming for the final.
Sailor's class is great. Weekly exams are the best system you could hope for cause you never really have to cram more than a week's worth of studying in a day. Exams are really easy and if you go to lecture you'll have seen every problem on the exam beforehand.
This was a very good transition class from high school to college. Weekly quizzes and extra credit made it very relaxed.
very interesting class lectures. good knowledge of material
Funny professor. Did a very good job of getting the class involved even if the class was 500+ students strong. He did some cool in-class demonstrations, (like blowing up a hydrogen filled ballon). Quizzes every week were easy and the final was doable with a cheat sheet.
Great professor. Chem is hard but this class is very fair. He's very funny and easy to understand. Also a really nice guy!
Good professor. Likes to engage with students. Weekly quizzes indicative of mainly the lecture slides. Reading the book helps a lot too.
Pretty easy to earn an A in the class as long as you do the homework problems and go to his lectures. Weekly quizzes make sure you're on top of things. Doubt you're going to have an easier intro science course than this.
Great and interesting professor! Lectures are fun especially since he gives stuff away for volunteering. There are weekly quizzes based off the problems in lecture. Final wasn't too bad. Just do the hw problems which indicate the type of questions on tests.
600 points total. 450 in weekly quizzes, 150 final. Lowest quiz dropped. 10-15 points extra credit, *wrong answer EC get 1 point*. I never really took chem before but I read the chapter, did homework twice, went to discussion, reviewed his lecture slides and got an A+. This sounds like a lot but it really isn't. Emphasis on lecture slides for quiz.
Really great intro class. Weekly quizzes make it super easy to make sure you're on top of things. Read the chapter beforehand, do the problems, and you'll do fine on all the quizzes. Final was almost identical to the practice one he gave us and put strong emphasis on lecture slides. Definitely recommend him!
Honestly I don't know why everyone liked him so much. His lectures are useless and you have to learn everything from discussion and the book. The weekly quizzes do make you learn the material but when there's no teaching going on it makes it tough. The class isn't too hard but it's just poor teaching and he doesn't really seem to care.
I took this class thinking I was super lucky in getting "the best chem teacher" but his lectures are hard to follow and his quizzes are tricky. I'm a pharm chem major and I am actually struggling in chem for the first time surprisingly. he does give away beakers which promotes participating :]
difficult class. his weekly quizzes are 50 points, combined with his homework and readings made me constantly studying for this class. he is known to be very fast paced as we were 2 ch ahead of all the other classes and his lectures didnt seem relevant to the quizzes most of the time. go to discussions to save your grade
Not a hard class, however u really need to study urself and go to the sections. Lecture rarely helps u prepare for the quiz. Just go to every section and the ta will point out what u need to study for the quiz. He is defintitely funnier than other chem 6a professors
Really easy class, if you do the homework and understand the concepts you'll get an A.
Easy grader. Grades depend on 9 quizzes and 1 final. Quiz every week. REALLY EASY if you spend your time (1~2 hours) to do the hw problems. Just read the book and you are alright. Lecture is quite useless.. frankly. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
Going to class is pointless since it's so loud from people talking that you can't hear anything. Rely mainly on book and hope for the best on the quizzes
Class consisted of 9 quizzes and a final. Quizzes were easy since the majority of the questions were from the recommended homework. Biggest cons for this class were the lectures -- they were awful -- and the final. It was much harder than anticipated, but I still made it out with an A.
Never went to lectures as they are completely useless. You are better off using that lecture time teaching yourself material from the book, which is what I did. I can say I taught myself everything covered in this class with the book. Quizzes are easy if you study.
He is a funny professor. You would need to study a lot! His lectures were difficult to understand at times.
My biggest pet peeve about Sailor is that his lectures go way ahead of the quizzes. We could be taking a chapter 7 quiz on Friday yet his lectures that week focus on chapter 10. In other words, he goes through material way faster than he needs to. Also, he's been really rude whenever I ask for help on something. Do not recommend.
His lecture pace may be unorthodox, but its clear that he cares about the material and his students ability to learn. He explains concepts well and care not only about chemistry, but also about teaching it to his students.
Fast pace lectures but very clear. There's no midterms but he has quizzes every Friday, they are very easy compare to the suggested homework problems. Most of the quizzes materials are two or three weeks after he taught them since his lecture is so fast, so good notes from lectures are important.
He is very fair in his grades (10 quiz 1 final). He even gave out presents for inclass participation. People are right, the lectures only go over difficult material but go past the weekly material at time. You need the textbook problems and Teaching Commons to understand the basics to pass the class. The lectures could be treated as supplemental.
Your entire grade depends on your quizzes and your final. He goes so fast in his lectures. Also EVERY quiz has assigned seating?!?!? Hw is not submitted. This is quite literally THE worst way to run a class. Only good part of his class is that he has both physical and Zoom class, so I can just stay home.
I teach myself in his class because he goes way too fast on his lecture pace. He is currently 2 weeks ahead of the material that is going to be quizzed this week, and it doesn't help that he is barely available on Piazza whenever I actually need help. Material on quizzes are heavy with points so be careful when taking his quizzes.
Terrible class. The class grade is based on 9 test scores and the final. No study guide either. Very cocky. Do not recommend.
I'll say this, his overall grading structure will be either a HIT or a COMPLETE MISS for some students. YOU MUST KNOW that he grades only based of 9 50 point quizzes and 1 final. No homework, no nothing else. For some, these quizzes are easy with the majority of the class scoring a ~40-46 out of 50 on a majority of the quizzes. He drops 1 quiz.
Quite literally the worst professor at UCSD. Doesn't seem to care about the class in the slightest. He creates a piazza for students to ask for help, where he almost undoubtably never responds. He creates a final with no study guide and proceeds to assess his students on material not taught in class, and expects the students to teach themselves. :)
Just choose a different professor. He is rude, lectures are useless and the grading scheme is horrific.
Class is based on 8 out of 9 quizzes and a final, and no busywork. If you like that format, take him. He is accessible outside of class, gives concise and helpful lectures, and overall is caring. The class is very little workload, technically there is no work outside of lecture. The optional homework is vital, and is about 2-6 per week, usually 3.
This course was entirely quiz based and was not set up in a way that gives you time to focus on other classes. There was no homework, and al of his lectures were at least two weeks ahead. He does not make himself accessible outside of class.
His lectures are terrible because he teaches way too fast. He crams into one class what other professors take two classes to cover just so he can make room for his six quizzes and one exam per quarter. On top of that, he barely goes over calculation problems in class. He doesn't assign homework he just expects us to do it on our own
The class is graded out of 6 quizzes and 1 final. He's honestly really kind though and brings ramen packets/chocolate to class for those who participate and before quizzes. The class itself is okay if you do the homework, and PLEASE READ THE TEXTBOOK. Discussion is not mandatory and lectures are asynchronous.
DONT TAKE HIM. The class structure can be overwhelming for most students, 6 quizzes(each 50pts) and 1 final(100pts). Screw up badly on 2-3 quizzes and ur cooked. READ the textbook always since his slides cover BARE MINIMUM of the content that should be covered. Get help from tutors, SI sessions, literally any resource available and good luck.
Prof Sailor is a good lecturer (though he does go fast -skim the textbook before class) and funny. Your grade is 6 quizzes and a final, which is a lot of pressure but the quizzes (mostly HW problems with new #s) are super doable. Most ppl average an ~80% or higher. And discussions are optional! As long as you study for the quizzes, you'll be fine.
GRADED BY 6 QUIZZES AND A FINAL. Class isn't necessarily hard if you do the homework problems and practice problems/exams, but be mindful that no test is dropped with each quiz counting for 12.5% of your final grade and final the other 25%. As long as you are on top of your game, it is very doable.
Overall this class was pretty good. Read textbook and do hw. Pros: easy quizzes, gives out treats to participants Cons: very fast lecturer, office hours are only on zoom.
If you're a stem major taking other heavy courses don't take him. If you're like me, you're probably thinking "oh I'll be fine" no you won't. Unless you have no life and are willing to read the entire textbook and do 50+ textbook questions a week, then do not take him. Do bad on one quiz and you're grade is tanked. Wait and take a different prof.
Study the quizzes like they are midterms cause if you fail one its hard to recover. Some were easy some were harder depending on the material. I liked looking at his recorded podcast bc he made fun animations in his slides that helped me understand better. He really does care even if he doesn't show it. he gives chocolates and prizes. Chill guy.
A funny guy and engaging lecturer. Sometimes he sped through notes and others he take his time. This class has no hw, and discussions aren't mandatory. Your grade is based on 6 quizzes (50 pt each) and 1 final (100 pt). Doing poorly on 1-2 of these can greatly damage your grade, so make sure to stay on track and don't procrastinate for the quizzes.
grade is determined by 6 quizzes + final, the quiz problems are all based off textbook problems he assigns (but aren't collected) so it's extremely easy and pass if you just do the problems, coming from someone who didn't pass, it's you're own fault if you don't pass bc he makes it easy! also funny + offers EC during lecture, so attend if u can
Honestly, as a lecturer he is fine – giving out treats and allat. However, his lectures are WAY too fast, and with only 6 quizzes 1 final, no curve, and extra credit that is super random it's hard to keep up in his class. Its doable but DO HW and USE TEXTBOOKS! He can be rude and random but is communicative. Do the work and you'll survive.
Take someone else. Lectures are fast, and there's no homework, just recommended problems. I prefer a system that shows how to solve problems, like the math department or other chem professors. Grades are based on a few assignments, and there's no curve, unlike other professors in the department who offer one. He's a great person, though.
Mixed-bag... gives a good amount of EC, and quizzes are pretty straightforward. Final was definitely more difficult. Lectures are not great as he speeds through slides which makes it difficult to take good notes on paper. However, reviewing & understanding his lecture notes is all you need to do well on quizzes.
DO NOT TAKE IF EMPLOYED. Blazes through content with little explanation. Need help? OH is once a week and even worse its on zoom! Quizzes not the toughest but missing just 1or even 2 questions ruins your whole entire grade.STRICT GRADING SCHEME. QUIZZES NEARLY WEEKLY. Lectures for 10-15min then quiz.Hard to recover from mistakes. Cool dude though.
If u want to succeed, reference the textbook a LOT, and use lecture time as review. I really enjoyed how HW was optional -it gave me time to actually think about what I was learning, and I encourage other professors to adopt this system. Had to study a bit for quizzes. Prof is hilarious and genuinely cares about students. 6B is just time-consuming.
