Current Lawyer, brings a lot of good courtroom examples to class. A lot of discussion of reading material. All around informative class, be prepared to be specific.

It's a great class! Having a current defence lawyer as a prof allows you to have such an updated view on the justice system. Instead of using all old cases, he brings current cases into the course as examples. A very helpful, easy going and funny professor. One of my favorites
not very helpful, sees things one-way
Very good prof, would take any class he teaches. He is really tough but you learn lots and he knows what he is talking about.
Very knowledgable however very very hard when it comes to marking. Really have to know your stuff for the midterm and final exam. Research your paper really, really well.
Great prof - really clear and entertaining. Really just wants everyone to do well, and gives everyone many opportunities to get extra marks. I would definitely recommend taking his class!
Mike was a good prof, wouldn't go overboard and say amazing, but I did enjoy going to class every week. Cares about his students and gives lots of opportunity for extra marks, challenges the students to debate issues. Anything you're not happy with however he's happy to change, watch out for clarity on exam questions.
Smith is a very good prof, easy to understand and fair in marking. reading the text in the first semester is really important.
He's extremely clear of what he wants and even more, he is VERY fair. You need to know your stuff, but he makes it very easy to WANT to learn the material. What other Law prof would coach their class in what to do when you've got marijuana plants in the back seat during routine pullover?...AND he's so hot, front row never looked so good.
A great prof. Really teaches you to think like a lawyer and not an academic. Gives 'real-world experience' in criminal law. Focus is on case law and not academic writing.
Mike is a great teacher! Attendance is not mandatory but participation is a good chunk of the overall mark
Napoleonic complex but a great guy, haha. J/K Smitty. Don't mess with him or else he'll wrestle you back to the 98 Olympics in his adorable 2 piece Canadian track suit. BOOM goes the dynamite!
- Good Prof, - Unclear Reviews, - Muddled Expectations - Participation is 5-10% - Easy Summative (minimum B across the board)- Fun Class, Very Interesting - Doesn't go 3 Hours.."Need to get home to see Dexter"
Mike is a very interresting professor to have, makes the lectures fun to attend and easy to follow; however, this being said the Mid-term was BRUTAL.. It is only worth 20% and this was a very good thing because in a class of about 60 students over half the class failed, with only about 4 students managing to get an A.
Make sure you're not late for his class; dont try to be a smartmouth with him - makes class really interesting when he draws from personal experience - overall, best law course I've taken sofar @ CU
Smith might have some good stories to bring to the table but a good chunk of my class thought he was cocky and arrogant. midterm was failed by over half of class and was not bell-curved, he is a lawyer first and a proffesor second. NO TENURE.
Mike Smith is the consummate lawyer. If you are relatively interested in the law, you will look past his arrogantness, which is more of a peculiar humor. He thinks he is the best, most likely because he is. Fun, punctual and usually a decent lecture. Lecture is relatively textbook driven.
He likes to challenge students and encourages discussion in the classroom. Very intelligent, great term project and the class covers a lot of material but is reasonably easy as long as you keep up with going to class and doing the readings.
Horrible prof. Incredibly arrogant and self-absorbed, and expects too much from his students. Is way to specific on his exams, out of almost 450 pages of textbook readings, it's impossible to remember ever little detail. I would not recommend taking his class if your major isn't law.
Mike is an actual defence lawyer and always had great stories to bring to the classroom. He never uses the full 3 hours and always makes class interesting. It is important to read the txt book has a lot of questions on the exam are from there.
POSITIVE notes: really interesting material, great communicator, excellent introspective to Criminal Law. Mike knows his stuff, utilizes the people he knows. Very engaging assignments. NEGATIVE notes: Exams are very difficult, he provides zero direction, you could study for months and still receive a poor mark - too much info and no direction
Mike is a engaging professor, he is fun and very smart. An actual lawyer who brings lots of knowledge to the classroom. Mike provides very good assignments and his exams are easy if you study but at times he will try and trick people beyond what is necessary often confusing even the most prepared students; know your stuff and attend every class.
Mike Smith is by far the best prof i have had so far at carleton, his classes are very interesting as well as his assignment. He makes sure to engage everyone in the classroom. going to his lectures are crucial if you want to do well in the class, as well as reading the textbook overall if you try you will do very well in his class. GREAT PROF!!
Overall a great prof until exams. He only marked the final exams because so many complaints were filed to the law department a month after the exam. I am still fighting my final grade because he neglected to enter my midterm score into the final grade. He doesn't say this, but exams focus on sections of the code, especially the final.
Ive been told it is now 605 dont come late chill guy muddah
most amazing prof i've had at carleton so far. Knows exactly what he is talking about because he is a criminal lawyer. Attending class is essential because he doesn't post anything online nor does he have powerpoints. Exam's are straight forward. Never uses the full 3 hours, 2 hours at the most.
Great Professor!!!! Hilarious lectures and uses his personal knowledge to explain concepts. 10/10 would take again!!!!!!
Easily the coolest prof at Carleton. He is really relaxed, will meet outside of class, will answer emails within hours, always is willing to help, mean while he basically running the ottawa court house. Would recommend you learn so much, and he is a real pleasure to learn from. Makes you think really hard. Cool guy
Awesome prof, is a criminal defence lawyer so he is always relating class material to his real life cases which is always funny and helpful in understanding. Makes you think and reflect on cases. Overall fantastic prof. Don't be afraid to ask questions, he seems tough but he's actually a sweet heart.
When he assigns you to be the next reader for the following week, make sure you read that chapter - and you'll guarantee yourself the participation points. Best. Prof. Ever. The man really knows how to keep his class engaged with the subject - he has a very diversify background (if you're into wrestling, the guy was a wrestling olympian)
If you are considering law school, 100% take this prof. Absolutely amazing, very knowledgeable in his field and presents the information in a way that's easy to understand. Very straight forward on what he's looking for in assignments so if you follow his guidelines you are good to go.
Amazing prof! He is a criminal defence lawyer so brings real experience to the classroom. Don't be late for class or he will embarrass you. Honestly the best class I've taken at Carleton so far.
The prof literally gives you little to no direction on exams. You will have to memorize a lot of concepts, dates, cases, with little to no idea of what to expect.
The material itself is not difficult. The exam (and midterm) is ridiculous (you will need to know ALL cases from the textbook)He's very cocky and you will receive your marks very late. It took him 1 month to give us our grades back for a multiple choice mid-term and it's now the end of January and our class hasn't received our exam grades from fall
Incredible prof. This is not an easy A class, if you are taking it for that reason. But let me be honest with you, if you show up, pay attention in class and do what is asked of you, trust me you'll be 100% successful. Mike Smith cares about his subject and his students, which I really admire of him. I truly looked forward to going to lecture.
This professor puts his job as a teacher before his lawyering at his firm. He is extremely nice and self not absorbed. He is smart but when it comes to having a career as a professor he is quite the best. He cancels classes never, he sometimes even has an associate of his come in and teach the class for him as a special treat.
This professor puts his job as a lawyer before his teaching at carleton. He is extremely arrogant and self absorbed. He is smart but when it comes to having a career as a professor he is quite the contrary. He cancels classes with short notice, he sometimes even has an associate of his come in and teach the class for him.
Very smart and engaging. He will thoroughly explain concepts and ensure you understand why they are how they are. Need to pay attention and show up prepared and willing to participate in discussions. Textbook is required and used for every class. By far one of my favourite profs and made criminal law enjoyable.
One of the best profs I have ever had at Carleton. Super intelligent, great lecturer and very clear when teaching. Participation is key. Super funny guy and very approachable as well.
Mike makes class v interesting. The material is repetitive, easy to remember trends. However, tests heavily upon specific sections in YCJA and CCC - memorize them for the midterm & final. The court observation paper is easy, go to court enough & make sure you follow Legal Citation Style (table of contents, sub-titles, etc) & have a clear opinion.
Mike is awesome, he repeats important information and his exams were moderately easy. The court assignment is kind of a pain but everyone ends up doing well, if you go to court once it is an easy A. Super accessible and approachable outside of class. Would for sure take the class again.
Easy prof overall. Never responds to e-mails so dont expect to get any help. Wouldnt take again based on the lack of help. Interesting lectures but he fills a lot of the time by asking questions that most of the class doesnt know. Could learn a lot more than two chapters if it was more structured.
Smith does not post any notes/lecture slides so you gotta go to class. The court assignment is easy, and the midterm is fair and no surprises. the exam was also fair and straightforward. Only thing is he barely responds to emails, so it is hard to get outside of class help. His lectures are interesting and only for an hour so you will not get bored
Does not reply to emails so don't expect to get help from him, even during Covid-19, he did not have the respect to email students back when asking for help. Didn't show up for midterm, had someone from his law firm watch us, lectures include him just speaking, no slides or anything. Honestly would never take a class with this professor again .
terrible prof. DO NOT TAKE HIS COURSE. he will not reply to emails or clarify any of your questions. he will not teach you properly. do yourself a favour and take any of his courses with a different prof to avoid him. he is unorganized and does not prioritize this course. He is criminal defence lawyer so he is busy with that.
Don't bother. If you can't afford the $250 scam that is the required textbook, you will fail his class. He doesn't use slides and doesn't answer emails so don't expect any actual help. Pick literally any other professor for Criminal Law.
Lectures are interesting and informative, he knows his stuff. However, no slides, only talking, so you must listen and attend class! The toughest grader I've had at Carleton: hyper-focused on minute details out of 600 pages worth of textbook readings. Refuses to reply to emails if he does not like the timing or question asked (so basically never).
Seems like a cool guy and obviously has a ton of experience in Criminal Law. But, he just wasn't a good professor. His questions on quizzes were incredibly vague and so were the guidelines on the assignment, yet, he is a very specific and hard marker. It was hard to tell most of the time what was expected to get a good grade.
A good professor in that he teaches the required materials and he engages with the class. Although, it is IMPOSSIBLE to get ahold of him by email. His tests are based on small stupid details so if you answer the question perfectly you wont get full marks unless you add everything you know too. Doesnt use lecture slides either. HATED THE CLASS!!
Mike is a good lecturer, but tests and assignments are impossible to do well on. Mike also does not answer emails, which is essential for this online school environment. The tests are based on picking the right cases or right ideas, rather than a thorough demonstration of what you know. Avoid at all costs.
The textbook was not available until the last few weeks of class. He knew this but continued to expect that we knew content from the text. His marking scheme is poor. Very poor if any communication between the Prof and the TAs. He would sometimes respond to emails but without any support or understanding. He does this for the money.
Smith's classes are interesting, but only if you audit and don't receive a grade. He is really unclear in his assignments and extremely vague in tests and exams. He is absolutely unreachable by email which in an online setting is messed up. He may be a good lawyer, but he's a terrible prof. Good guy, horrible academic. AVOID if you value your GPA
Michael Smith was a good prof. I had him online and the lectures were easy to follow, he reviewed over cases very well and all the content was taken from the textbook. He does not post lectures or slides so you must go the lectures or you won't do well. The lectures are short so it is easy to sit through. Overall, good prof! Tests are easy.
Makes sure you go to class with the cases already read. He doesn't post lecture slides so get ready with ur notes. His instructions are very vague and you really need to add in the smallest details in your assignments/exams. Stay away if not needed or if theres another choice, though you can tell he is an amazing lawyer. DOES NOT RESPOND ON EMAILS.
Disorganized. Doesn't respond to emails. Wrote 2 different due dates for an assignment in multiple places. Didn't teach material needed for the mid-semester essay until the last class. Needed textbook. Questions on quizzes very vague. Takes long to return grades. Went into final only knowing 35% of grade even tho final was only worth 25%. Bad prof
Professor will never reply emails totally unreachable. Worst class I've ever taken at Carleton never posts lecture slides or any materials.
Very intelligent person who is very knowledgable in law. Lectures can be pretty interesting despite no lecture aids. However, a lot of the assessments don't translate well with the course content being learned.
DON'T EVEN BOTHER. No lecture slides just him talking at the screen. Super disorganized teaching style, so impossible to take good notes. Doesn't accept any late assignments, syllabus does not say that. Didn't get syllabus/a page on brightspace till week 2 of class. Obviously successful, but a massive jerk & clearly doesn't have time to be a prof.
Mike is a great guy and a fantastic lawyer. However, it is painfully obvious that teaching is not his priority. No communication with students or TAs, tests are very vague and easy to misunderstand, and the lectures are often hard to follow without slides/references to anything. He's a great person, but avoid taking crimlaw with him if you can :/
Had to wait two weeks into the class just to receive the syllabus. Vague quizzes. No lecture slides. Very unclear with assignments. No communication; not responsive to emails. Grades come back in the very last minute with absolutely no feedback. Very disorganized. Do not take a class with him if you do value your GPA!!!!!
With out a doubt very knowledgeable in criminal law and an overall nice guy. However, I will agree with the other reviews that he does not make teaching his priority. It took nearly 2 weeks to receive the syllabus and to activate brightspace. Does not provide PowerPoint notes and grading criteria is vague with little feedback.
Worst professor I've ever experienced. Doesnt use slides or post on brightspace, expects paper assignments and textbooks. Gives students "his look" which makes you feel stupid when participating. Will choose students to speak involuntarily. Dont be late to class, will scold and embarrass you in front of everyone. Doesn't answer emails or questions.
Must attend every class, but DO NOT show up late. 3 quizzes - no MC, only short answers. Final paper was a little confusing. No slides and he does not post anything on Brightspace. Nothing gets graded. Mike is hilarious and knowledgeable so he's great to listen to, but not the greatest prof. Although I have heard he is great for 2nd-year classes.
Professor Smith was horrible. His grading criteria for assignments and most other things are extremely unclear, he takes significant points off and offers little feedback as to why he took points off. Is extremely inaccessible outside of all. I would avoid at all costs, his class just induces anxiety, stress, and burnout.
Professor Smith is a really good prof. Unlike all the other profs at Carleton, he doesn't just read off the slides. Instead, he talks very conversationally with the students which makes for a really good learning environment. The assignment was a bit tough but quizzes and exam were easy. Overall, amazing professor!
10/10 would not recommend.
Worst Class I have Ever Taken. DO NOT DO IT :)
No words at all. He does not post anything on brightspace or even uses powerpoints during class time
When I took this prof, I thought it was going to be a great class now, I would never recommend him to anyone. He does not answer emails, he doesn't use PowerPoints and I believe he is there for an extra pay. No care for student, in my option.
Avoid this prof for this class. He NEVER answers emails. Doesn't communicate with the TAs. He clearly cares more about being a lawyer than his students or his class. Material isn't extremely difficult but he makes it hard for no reason. Just stay away for your own sanity.
Mike smith is a very punctual person and expects you to be the same. The course consists of 1 assignment 3 quizzes, and final exam multiple choice and short answer. Assignment is pretty easy, for quizzes READ TEXTBOOK, and Final exam know the CASES/CONCEPTS and there CONTEXT. Overall though do yourself a favor and don't take the class SERIOUSLY.
These reviews don't do Prof. Smith justice. He's an amazing prof and I appreciated his oldschool approach to teaching. He's a lawyer before he's a prof. Show up to class, DON'T BE LATE (trust me), do your readings and I promise you will excel. It's really that easy. Ask your questions in class. He is more responsive via his work email vs school.
This prof was honestly really amazing, he lectures incredibly and has an awesome presence in class. He doesn't use powerpoint, but you'll find you won't need them since he repeats himself often and is very fluid when he lectures. Overall really great guy! Just don't come late to class!!
Mike does not use powerpoints, expects you to read the textbook and come prepared and on time to class. Great guy, likes to use his own cases to connect to concepts.
Great prof! His lectures are very thorough and easy to understand. There are no lecture slides so it's more interactive, but if you go to class prepared and pay attention, you will understand the material. Make sure to be on time, especially on the first day.
Does not answer to any emails, no lecture slides!
Mike is the best professor i have had at Carleton and it's not even close. His lectures are extremely entertaining, engaging, and easy to follow. As long as you stay engaged in the class discussion during the lecture and do your readings, you will do well. I cannot recommend this prof enough.
One of the best Law professors I've had. No slides yet, no problem. The lectures were engaging, and he often would try to keep everyone involved through case studies. Quizzes and the exam were not tricky if you listened in class and had good notes. I'd totally recommend that any law student wanting to learn to take his class.
You will not get marks back in a timely manner, still have not gotten a grade and it is a new semester. Sure he is passionate about what he is teaching however there is no outline for the final exam, if you care about that, there are no lecture slides and for most of the class I had no idea on where I stand in grades as a class.
slow marker... but his lectures are engaging and the exam is a piece of cake. It is open book, pretty much impossible to do bad. Assingment is cool as you get to go to the court house. Keep in mind that you must go to class as their is no slides, but Smith is very entertaining. He has no favorite students and is very down to earth.
Best law prof I have had so far. Does not use slides yet he does not need them to make the class entertaining and informative which makes it easy to come back each week. Knows his stuff and speaks about what it is really like to work in the field of criminal law. The assignment was the most engaging one I have done so far. 100% recommend.
Lectures are AMAZING, entertaining, great. He engages with the class, debates, makes it fun. Textbook is very useful; he follows it for lectures. You won't get grades back fast tho + always check assignments, quizzes dates on brightspace bc the syllabus isn't clear on due dates, like weekly questions. But for the prof, the issues are worth it
Professor Smith is by far the best teacher I have had in my life. His lectures are amazing to be in, he engages students and does not use slides which makes the students actually pay attention. He makes sure people respect him which is rare nowadays and his assignment is the most engaging and interesting thing I have ever done in university.
If you didn't like Mike Smith just means you weren't prepared. You must do the readings to be able to understand because he uses no lecture slides but that's what I think makes him so great compared to other profs. He genuinely teaches law and everything about criminal defences. The class assignment to the court house is also amazing.
Amazing prof, his lectures are very entertaining, engaging, and he knows how to teach the information in a way that's easy to understand and remember. Quizzes and assignment were easy if you pay attention in class, and Mike makes it hard not to. Wish we got some of the marks back sooner but 10/10 recommend
