great teacher, really fired up!
He's friendly and makes the subject interesting
No Comments
notes aren't very complete. Tests are hard but you can get an A if you prepare and ask a lot of questions. Tells lots of stories and isn't worried about covering everything. If he doesn't talk about it, he doesn't test it.
wicked awesome prof, hates cats, kind of a geek but in a i know i'm one, and I'm proud way, honestly the best prof I ever had.
Know the notes and Figures and you'll do awsome!
He is so funny. Sort of a geek but makes the lecture really intersting. Deffinately going to try and get into his lecture next semester.
He's a great prof. Friendly and approachable!
awesome guy. really funny. really helpful.
Tests are hard, but fair. Only tests what he's covered in class. Funny guy, good stories. DEFINITE GEEK!! (but in a good way)
Exams are easy...right from the lecture notes
Makes the course work interesting... tests are fair provided you come to class. What's with the cat thing though??
Beware of exams! Great instructor, but exams are ridiculously difficult. Know every detail. Come to class everyday!
Unfair. He makes you think only overall concepts are important and then the tests are way more indepth than he has led you to believe. Don't believe him.
His midterm for bio108 is super easy! It was straight from the notes. You don't even have to buy the text book for this course.
He is a good prof for bio 108 but not that good for bio 207. Stick with McFadyn for 207.
Very knowledgable, approachable and helpful. The Best prof I have met to date.
I loved being in his class, for Biology it was an entertaining class. Makes bio interesting and I never fell asleep. Come to class and study your notes, you'll really hardly need the text. If you study the notes and pay attention you should be able to ace his exams.
He likes to make a lot of jokes to keep you awake, some are just so stupid that you have to laugh. The man knows his bacteria. You only need the text book for the final, maybe. Take down and read the notes, you'll be fine
Great guy! Funny in many ways. Did you know he Brews his Own Beer!!! Makes him an awesome guy in my books!!
He is absolutely hilarious and always has a story to tell. He keeps class interesting, but pay attention and study because his tests are hard.
Super funny- really great guy. A tough course with him because his questions are tricky and sometimes he will ask about stuff you wouldn't think is important from his lectures. Make sure u read the text about 10 times and you'll do super well tho. If u have a question, make sure you ask him about it too, 'cause his notes = sketchy.
Make sure you buy the text book. His notes are as good as the chapter summaries. But make sure you know everything about his notes. Read the text book. Practice problems in the book do not reflect what he has on the test. Exams are Extremely difficult but fair if u study like crazy. make sure you know everything, (Even his damn stories).
Most hilarious man alive. I have to resist cracking up all class. Every thing he says is hilarious. Anyone who says the notes are bad is a liar. If you memorize the notes, you will get 90+(know the notes very well, for m.c each question has e)all of the above). To summarize, this man is the god of bio.
He is one of the best teachers I have ever had. He is very interesting.
This guy is sooo funny, and he's always got a story to tell. It's always nice to come across a prof that loves what they do, and mike is a stellar example of that. Just make sure to read the notes (which are amazingly thurough) and spend the time to read the test questions.
He is hilarious, and very outgoing. It is fun listening to him talk about things that are generally quite boring in my opinion. He reminds me of a kid on Christmas morning when he is telling his stories. His tests are hard, but he was pretty good with our class about covering material before the exam. You do need to read the text book though!!
Amusing and informative letures. Always has some antidote for what he is teaching. The exams have antidote as well. Always has a smile on his face.
If your the type who falls asleep in class, well stock is your guy. Because he will keep you awake. Interseting and funny guy. The only problem is that his tests are hard. His main idea for a test is to TRICK you..alot. If you know your stuff, you will do good, but hey the class avg was quite low though.
Funny guy. He only tests from the notes so you have to take them to do well. He likes classes that ask questions and not those that talk while he talks. No surprise here but he threatens to not give bonus marks to classes he doesn't like.
Only tests on what he talks about in class.Good teacher in class, but doesn't want to help outside of class. Really moody and can be an ass.
spends most of the class telling stories and gets way behind in the course material leaving you completely unprepared for the labs. Keeps you entertained if you're a lazy student. Keeps you frustrated to no end if you are a good student
Stock is a very great professor. He is very helpful. I never have to touch my text book, not even once. He test you on whatever he talks about in class. So I strongly recommend you to take him and only skip class if you have no other choice. He made Bio 108 be such a very interesting lecture i ever had.
He is a great teacher. You have to go to class though because the notes do not explain anything. If you understand everything he says you don't need the text book much but it is nice for clarity on some gray areas. He always makes it seem like his tests will be hard but they're not!
extremely boring class, but GREAT PROFESSOR. He is passionate about biology and he definitely bring enthusiasm and excitement to the class and tries to make the class fun and interesting. His notes are GREAT, very detailed and don't need to read the book. Make sure you get all the topic outlines, very helpful.
Very enthusiastic guy. Knows his stuff well and explains things extremely well. Recommend him to anyone for this course.
Funny, enthusiastic. Always have stories to entertain the class. Extremely knowledgeable. Only test you on what he talks about in class so make sure you show up for his class and copy his notes. Very tricky exams though. I'd recommed him to anyone. PS: Don't ask him about stupid cats because he'll keep bashing them :)
he is an awsome teacher. so excited about bio and loves to help anyone who wants to know. if you have a question during class he loves to answer those too. all tests are straight from his notes, BUT his tests are VERY tricky and tough. know the little bit of material VERY well and you will do VERY well! best bio teacher for sure at grant mac
Mike is a great prof! I always looked forward to his class because he was so enthusiastic about Biology- that makes his students love it too! You must go to every class in order to get the notes because he does not post them online but the notes are always short and to the point. I liked Biology before but now I love it!
Best teacher I've ever had. Very enthusiastic. Tells stories in lecture to keep you paying attention. Study for the tests, they're difficult but very reasonable.
Awesome class and awesome instructor!
He makes every lecture interesting! He goes into great depth and really makes an effort to get people attentive and make sure they understand. He is very helpful and always open to questions. The exams are tough but if you know the little details you will be fine.
I thought he was a very nice guy. But had no idea what he was doing in class. He would talk about some useless session happening at the school all class and waste our time. And then his exams were brutal! and had terminology we never learned and that wasnt in the textbook.
This is a really great teacher! He knows his stuff. He tells stories related to what he is teaching (and sometimes not teaching) which makes the class funny and interesting. His exams are fair and he puts little jokes into them which I thought was useful for getting rid of exam tension.
I arranged my schedule this semester in order to be in his class again. Great prof. Tests only on things he discusses in class, but anything he says is fair game, so you have to attend and pay attention. But he makes it easy to pay attention with clear stories and examples. Hates dumb plants and stupid cats.
Awesome guy. "How am I doing?" is his favorite thing to say during lecture. Always has a cartoon at the start which helps everyone like him more. He makes you want to go to class which makes learning so much easier. Be warned, the class is very difficult but Mike clears up any confusion whenever he can. Def. recommend!
Awesome guy. He made me laugh almost every class, and is one of the few teachers that makes you interested in learning. It was an extremely hard class overall, however. He doesn't know how to use Powerpoint so you are furiously copying down his overheads. His test were rather difficult as well.
Outstanding Teacher! A few of my classmates found his tests difficult but I wrote down alot of the little extra stuff he commented on when discussing his notes and I recieved an A on both the midterm and final. The midterm was way easier in my opinion.
Easily the best professor in Grant MacEwan, his tests are wordy, but easy, he is very laid back, and if you go to him with a question, you will not be dissapointed, he wont let you leave his office until the concept is crystal clear.
Awesome Proff! He comes to class with a great attitude and genuinely likes what he does- that translates with his clear, straightforward lectures. Nice guy. Highly reccomend switching into one of his classes.
I find him to be a highly enjoy prof to listen to. He is very upbeat and ready to teach every class. I find he can tend to stray from topic in class though leaving us feeling rushed towards the end of the semester. In an hour long class half an hour of stories (some days) prevents my full learning and my heavy reliance on the textbook.
He is very talkative and likes to tell jokes but he stays on the same topic an aweful lot considering how much material we SHOULD be covering. His test had some questions that should be obvious, like obviously. Fun teacher but since I had to drop the class I cant be more helpful
Mike is a brilliant guy, but I can't stand his teaching style. His lectures were boring and were packed with useless info (talking about H1N1 for 2 weeks). I walked away more confused than ever. Read the textbook because his last bit of notes were just pp's of pictures from the book (hardly any notes). Take notes of what he says.
Definately memorable, fun and a favorite. Course is memorization heavy and required alot of additional studies on my own to absorb. To answer the bonus questions on exams, attendence is mandatory.
Great prof, really into the material and always willing to help. That being said, his stories are amusing but sometimes a little too long-winded! He'd probably be understanding about if someone told him about it though. Too bad I had to withdraw, he's really good at making the material interesting.
Good guy but not a great style of teaching. He talks a ton about random things and seems to expect everyone to know things the way he does. Does not do anything to make material clearer (ie. post notes. Talks fast and a lot. Hard to keep up. Tough exams compared to level of teaching.
I love Mike Stock. He is hilarious and made our class really fun. The class was a lot of memorization, but he gave a handout with everything he wanted us to know, and as long as you follow that and know everything, you will be fine. Tests are difficult, but fair. My Fav. Quote: "Mushrooms are like sweaters..."
Fun, entertaining and very helpful and engaging. Tests are tricky and definately requires full attendence in lectures for info not available in the textbook. Loved him!
He is a good teacher very interesting. He focuses on the interesting topics mainly which helps in this class because it is very content heavy. Make sure you study very hard for your lab because it can cause your mark to drop hugely. He is quite approachable outside of class and helps with a class that is so largely memorization.
Very good teacher! Great help!
Bio 108 at Gmac was GREAT with Mike. He makes it fun and interesting and relevant. All test questions are based on his lectures, so go to class. Great Teacher. Fav quote: how long should our essay be? "like a woman's skirt long enough to cover the subject, but short enough to keep it interesting!" LOL
Best professor I've ever had and I've attended two different colleges / universities. Attending his class is a must. He has so many stories that relate to the topic of study. Anyone is lucky to have him as a professor.
Mike is awesome. He is so excited about the subject that you get sucked into his world. Attend every class...he gives you a question from the exam every class...in his own secret way!
Mike is an absolute beauty. He told relevant stories about the material that made the class very interesting. The exams were very fair, multiple choice and short answer. Always upbeat and makes you laugh every class. Plan on majoring or minoring in bio because of him. Would recommend him to anyone !
Mike is absolutely brilliant! The best professor at GMac hands down. The more lectures you attend and pay attention to, the less studying you will do in the long run. His stories are brilliant. He tries to make the course as low-stress as possible. A+ guy!
Great guy sadly he talks a lot about not important facts.=(
Mike is a brilliant guy! His notes are clear, he brings an amazingly positive atmosphere into the class and is easily approachable. As long as you go to class and study off his slides you will do great in this course! Mike also loves to tell stories about his life in class which was always funny, but off topic. Highly recommend him!
Mike is a great bio prof that tries to make things interesting and he's absolutely hilarious too. Very laid back, if you study you will do well.
Good class but mike can be incoherent at times. His class requires attendance and patience as he can drone on.
he is very vague. his ppt slides are the only thing you need to study but make sure to take notes about everything he says. questions in the exam can be really vague sometimes. be prepared for a hard test. you never know enough for his exams. good luck!
Mike can be vague at times and his midterm was tough. Study hard and you will be fine. He's pretty funny too. READ your textbook and attend class.
Mike is a great guy. His passion for biology is very clear from his lectures. He can be a bit vague though but I must recommend you take notes of EVERYTHING he says. The final is tough but if you took notes of everything(like he says on his first day) you wont even need to open the textbook. Be diligent in his class and it will pay off!
great guy
Mike is a great story teller, this class is not the boring history lecture you feared. It is engaging and you will do well on his exams as long as you attend class. No text book so simply study your notes.
I really loved having Mike as a prof but the midterm wasn't easy and his lectures are good when he's not going on about something useless. He really loves science and he's super passionate about it.
Mike Stock is very passionate about the subject. Some of his ppt notes are kind of lacking. Attend the class and write down notes, unless you want to read the whole textbook. We had a midterm, 2 online quizzes and a final. Some of the extra information he shared before the lecture actually popped up as a bonus mark in the exam so pay attention.
Mike is very knowledgeable and passionate, but has a bit of a scatter brain. He tends to drift off the main topic, and talk more about things that aren't going to be graded on. As long as you read the textbook and follow along with his slides at home, you really don't have to show up to get a good grade.
Mike Stock is very passionate about his class. However, it is hard to stay focussed.
You must attend classes and you must take notes to do well in this class because the powerpoint notes are not sufficient! It's not hard stuff if you're willing to take the notes, most of the stuff on the exam is stuff he's stressed again and again in class. Not many chances to make up for it if you do poorly.
Mike is a laid back and funny guy, but tends to go on tangents during long lectures. Especially about parasites. Approachable. Classes are mandatory if you want to pass. His pwr points have no detail so you have to write down what he says. ANYTHING he says can be tested on or a bonus question. Final was entertaining to write (goofy answer choices).
very passionate, so much so that he gets off topic, however the off-topic and random information finds its way onto the exams so write EVERYTHING he says down, even if it's unrelated. Impress him by showing interest and being involved in lectures. Take advantage of office hours as he goes through material very quickly. Didn't use textbook at all!
He's a funny guy and his lectures aren't bad. His test are pretty easy but you better know the lecture notes. He gives out bonus questions on the tests and the questions come from what he talks about in class. All in all, I think he's a great prof.
Great teacher
Mike is great. He loves to tell stories, lots of times to go with class content. He DOES often go on tangents like others have said, but I tend to enjoy them - he makes me laugh. He tests only on what has been said in class, but that includes random discussions! Lots of little things pop up as bonus questions. Taking again for Zool 250!
Agree with what's been said the last few reviews - also, participation matters. He likes classes that ask questions and answer his own questions. Will give a couple of bonus percents to classes he feels earned it at the end of the semester, so make sure you participate in class! (Plus isn't it more fun that way?)
Mike stock is very passionate about Biology. This makes his classes very engaging. Definitely go to lecture. He will tell you little "fun facts" that will be bonus questions on the midterm and final! His power points are filled with images but little text. Taking class notes is required. The exams were medium to hard difficulty.
I had Mike Stock for Bio108 and his online quizzes are heavy on the lecture material. Some of the material doesn't even relate to what is covered in the textbook and seems sort of off-topic.
Loved his class! He is very enthusiastic and loves biology! His exams are fair. There are even bonus questions from little things he tells you in lecture. His slides are almost entirely blank so go to lecture! Also he hates cats and botony!
His lectures tend to go off topic, and a lot of his teachings don't relate to the textbook. Don't miss class, you won't know what's on tests. His tests are easy & have bonus questions of little "fun facts" he talks about so pay attention to his stories even though they seem useless. He doesn't answer emails so if you have questions go see him.
Mike is a great professor explaining the material in a language that anyone can understand. Biology is a tough course and Mike makes it look easy. I didn't like his exams, the wording is vague and ambiguous. I like structure and his class is not structured at all. Understanding the material won't necessarily give you a good mark.
Michael stock is a great prof, explain things well and is funny. His tests are fairly straight forward and it should be easy if you have studied. However his slides are useless so its better to go to class and pay attention to what he says. My one complaint about him would that he tends to ramble and gets sidetracked.
I was told that Mike was amazing thats why I took his class but it definitly wasn't the outcome for me. I went up to ask questions and he downplayed me. Also his online slides are absoultly useless and vague. With a heavy class, having those kinds of notes do not help students so be prepared to do extra reading and attendance is mandatory
The class started out fun, he told us stories and stuff but then I realized his stories were actually lectures? He taught the class as a story so you didn't know what was important and what wasn't. He is an okay prof but his lecture slides are so vague you have no idea which stuff is important and what isn't. His midterm wasn't too bad.
As someone who struggles with bio, Mike made it easier to get through. I definitely recommend going to class as he gives bonus questions on the midterm/final that you'll only know if you were in class. Do his lecture topic outlines (super helpful for midterm/final)! He often got off topic and loved to tell stories, but I actually enjoyed his class.
a fantastic prof. makes everything very interesting because of his extreme passion for the subject. hilarious. He truly loves to teach and given the opportunity he will ramble hilariously on anything related. His tests are exactly as expected too, no surprises whatsoever - even gave bonus marks. Best teacher ive ever had. 10/10 would take again.
only tests on what's been said in class, that being said make sure you attend EVERY class and write down everything he says. personally found it helpful to record the lectures to make sure i had everything. as most ppl said he has fun facts as bonus questions on his exams. probably would take again
Honestly one of my favourite profs that I've had! He makes the lectures fun by adding his own stories, however, can sometimes get off topic. He only tests on whats been said in class, meaning that you need to attend every class or get in class notes from a friend. Anything he talks about is fair game even if it's not in the powerpoints. So much fun
Great teacher very knowledgeable and always willing to be more specific or go over something again. Funny in lecture, tests are really long but fair to the material. Make sure you study his notes and attending class is really helpful.
His lectures are interesting, but beware he LOVES Darwin. His power points are very brief so you need to pay attention to what hes saying to make your notes. He does like to try to trick you on his exams, and he will quiz you on anything he says in class; even things that don't seem important.
As much as Mike drives me a bit crazy sometimes, I really enjoy his classes. His method of lecturing is usually story-telling, which I find sticks in my head quite well. He can be kinda wishy-washy with his requirements for assignments and answers on exams, but overall he's a great prof, makes every lecture fun. Very sad he's retiring soon.
