Hard teacher. I drop out of this class since I hardly knew the material of how he teaches it. The paper hw and exams are the same be aware of that and I hardly did good on both. It doesn't come from the book on how to do the problems. I wouldn't recommend this teacher to anyone. If you wanna get into far math, then get a better teacher than him.
Mike is a really passionate teacher who truly cares about his students learning. That being said his class is really hard. You must study hard to get a good grade. The only thing I do not like about his class is that our HW never helps us with the test and there isnt a review. I like mike alot though and am takin his Calc class next qtr
Test questions are not always questions that have been on homework. 2 and half years in college and a 3.9 GPA and I'll be lucky to pull a C in this one. I won't be taking classes with him again due to the test material being foreign and not being given enough time to approach these questions that aren't familiar enough to just plow through.
Mike is the best math teacher i have ever had. The tests can be a bit tricky, but just do the review and write those examples on your page of notes and your good. He is very passionate about teaching and he encourages you ask for help if you need it. Very approachable.
Mike was a rather difficult teacher. Only half of his tests consist of questions are on things you actually learned in homework or in the book. He like to test on the conceptualized idea of problems, not just to see if you know how to solve the problem. A really nice guy, but I would not recommend taking his class if math isn't your strong suit.
At first i wasnt fond of him, but now i really like him! So far hes the best teacher i have ever had
I've had mike since precalc and i'm currently in his calc2 class. Very passionate teacher! his lectures always seem to go by fast; he always ask if people have a question too. Only thing is the tests are hard as a mother. If the written homework is giving you a hard time then you will fail the test. He makes you work if you want a good grade!
The course, as taught by Mike, is challenging; the quality of instruction, however, is high. Lectures are clear, interesting and engaging. Exams often seek to test conceptual understanding of the material, taking concepts taught in class and asking the students to apply them in new ways. An excellent, entertaining instructor. I'll miss his classes.
He doesn't teach, so be ready to teach yourself. When I got help from a tutor she didn't help either, so that screwed me over. Lots of online homework and paper homework. I normally get an A in math so taking this class was traumatizing. He is funny and makes class fun, but fun does not help you if you aren't learning.
Best math teacher so far, but really doesnt answer questions. One time he refused to anawer a question about online hw. Amount of homework was insane!! I didnt hav half the time to prepare i wanted.
Mike is good up until about the half way point of the quarter… at that point he pretty much ceases to teach you anything but how to make cool looking graphs. He is a nice guy but he grades harshly on the quizzes. Be prepared to teach yourself everything. I put in over 20 hours a week in studying and I will likely scrap out a 3.5- 3.7. Joke
I just finished taking this class, and Mike was a great instructor! He's very helpful, and makes sure you understand the answer to your question. He's also very fun- best math class I've taken. As I did take this during the summer quarter, he changed he experimented with grading percentage (HW 15%, Quizzes 60%, etc.), and I liked it a lot.
Nothing like spending $150 on a book and being told you won't use it! Homework was online and from his own made up assignments, in which we had zero reference material to help us at home with. Math lab tutors couldn't help several of us either, they had no idea what he was asking. WORST.... CLASS.... EVER....
Mike is a really funny, entertaining teacher. It's apparent to anyone in his class that he truly enjoys teaching. The first half of the quarter was relatively easy, but the second half got really hard. It felt like he put in less effort to help us really understand, and his weekly quizzes (no mid term) became a lot more dificult. Couldn't find help
Mike is great at answering any questions in class. Sometimes some of the homework is hard, but if you keep up with it, it's not bad. I highly recommend him for math. His class is far easier than others. He is also funny, and personable. He understands that sometimes life happens, and that his class is not your life. Only used the book to study.
Horrible at explaining math, he goes at the pace of the future engineers in the class so no help to those in the class that want him to take it a little slower. Not any more help when you ask him for help during office hours.
His statistics class is really straight forward, homework due every Monday and a quiz every Thursday. I don't know how his Calculus classes are, but he does try to make lecture exciting and not too boring. I would rate this instructor 910.
HE IS THE WORST MATH TEACHER I HAVE EVER HAD! I AM NOT THE GREATEST IN MATH BUT I ALWAYS AT LEAST PASSED THE CLASS. HE DOESN'T HELP YOU. HE GOES AT A FAST PACE LIKE YOUR SOME MATH GENIUESS. HIS WEEKLY QUZZIES ARE NOT RELEVANT TO THE HOMEWORK HE GIVES. HE SAYS AS LONG AS YOU DO THE HOMEWORK, YOU WILL PASS THE QUIZ.. NO! DON'T TAKE HIS CLASS.
Never really been good at math. So I was happy when I was able to understand the material and got a relatively good grade dispite my being bad at homework. I plan on taking MATH92 next quarter specifically with this teacher.
Mike Story is an excellent math professor! Its a subject that you can tell he is passionate about and if you are taking him for any of the lower math classes such as Math 080 he is a great instructor to help guide you through the intricacies of math. I would take this professor for any and every future math course, if I could.
Mike was an awesome guy I would love to have a math class taught by him any
Mike is a clear and concise teacher, he does not waste time on anecdotes (for the most part) but still manages to keep a light, engaging energy in the room. He does like students to participate but will not call on you if you don't raise your hand. His grading is standard for mathematics: if you don't demonstrate the method, you lose points.
Great lectures but sometimes gets off topic.
Mike is a great guy and his classes are enjoyable! His exams, however, are very difficult and tests you on problems that you may not have seen before. He does assign a lot of homework, but it counts for a high percentage of your grade so it can help boost those low exam scores. Overall, he's a great professor but I wish the exams were easier.
Awesome guy but terrible teacher. You have to teach yourself most of the lessons. His tests are hard and he assigns a lot of homework.
Does a great job helping the class when people are struggling, downside is he doesn't usually make it through the whole curriculum. Homework is harder than in-class problems and tests.
weekly homework - you have time to get help before turning in. weekly quizzes are a great help and a great study guide later on! took him for 91 and went back for math 92!
Mike was a very good instructor. He really strives to help people understand, and is generally just a nice guy. Realize though, that he'll only help if you approach him for help, he won't go out of his way to make sure everyone is passing. He assigns a lot of homework, so don't leave it all until the last minute.
Great teacher! I hate math but passes statics with flying colors :) He teachings are so clear and he makes it seem to easy. The tests are very similar to what he writes on the white board. If you understand his teaching then the test will make sense.
Mike Story, a math professor at Everett Community College made my time learning mathematics more enjoyable. He provided addition out of class sessions to cover course material. The overall experience of this course was positive.
I loved this prof. He made Math so easy to understand. We had homework due every week, but no quizzes because of that. The tests were long but not overwhelming. He really wanted you to understand the material and made it clear that you could come to him at any time for help. Highly recommended.
Mike is amazing. It was his first time teaching this class so we had more homework than we should have, but he let us off easy by reducing it over the quarter. He cares about you understanding the subject and is willing to meet with you when you need or help with the homework. I would recommend his class to anyone and everyone.
Mike has been my least favorite professor so far i want to save some peoples math career right here and tell them not to take him. He gives online and written homework every week and the written homework is so hard sometime the tutors at the tutoring center couldn't even help me with it...
Wonderful teacher. He is willing to help anyone who asks. His test are easy and you get graded on homework. Make sure you come to class or you can fall behind. I would take him again any day.
I really liked this teacher until he made a seating chart. You would think at a college level class an instructor would treat you like a college student but he favored the 1st grader assigned seating strategy.
Mike is a great teacher, he explains thoroughly. There is homework, this is a math class. Tests look like the book homework. He doesn't mind follow up after class or his office. You would think a college student would be adult enough to not whine about having to change your seat for a couple days, plus 091 is a high school level class.
He was a great professor, then thing is that if you want to stay on top of whatever he is teaching you have to show up due to learning a new section everyday. He is kind of a tough grader when it comes to homework just because its all the same as the notes. He is caring and will explain further if needed.
Mike is amazing. He works one on one with students in class and is on top of his study. He knows what he's talking about and is enthusiastic. Though there is a pretty good load of homework on a weekly basis, you will pass the class with a thorough understanding if you stay focused and be honest when you're confused.
Awesome professor! His teaching is thorough and easy to understand, tests look like the homework. Would definitely take again!
This is by far the worst experience I've had learning from a professor. Mike loads you with homework, doesnt bother to teach you all of the homework, and sets up tests for people to fail. IF YOU HAVE A PROBLEM OUTSIDE OF CLASS HE DOES NOT CARE. If youre looking for a friend, a horrible teacher, and to fail...... take this class
The teacher goes with the flow of about 3to5 smartest kids in class. The hundreds of questions of HW we all did weekly are useless and were completely unhelpful in the class.
Definitely one of my favorite teachers at EVCC. Makes class very enjoyable with very easy to follow lectures. Same amount of homework as most math classes. Really good sense of humor mixed in with class work. I recommend Mike for any math class.
A wonderful professor, you can tell he loves what he does. If you have questions, he will always answer them and will give you some extra tips.
I liked Mike as a person, but very unorganized teacher! When you ask what is going to be on the quizzes/tests, he says "EVERYTHING", because he writes the quizzes/tests the night before. He doesn't give you clear criteria on what will be covered, and your stuck studying things that wont even be on the test. Grades super hard on the tests!
I took two different classes with him and I'm glad I did. He makes learning the subject easy, and he will be always glad to answer your questions. Homework? Yes there is , but it helps you learn.
I would not recommend him. Doesn't give you clear feedback, doesn't give you a heads up on what will be on the quizzes and tests, and makes technical errors. Throughout the quarter, everyone's grades weren't being properly weighted, and the second to last week of class he finally changed it, and everyone's grade in the class dropped significantly.
Mike is a lot of fun and brings a great energy to class, but I think he needs a new approach to teaching stats. I think students would do better if he spent more time on the underlying abstract concepts instead of just ripping through tough examples. I feel he could also learn to improve his communication skills greatly. Has an authoritativ tone.
i felt like his Class was easy as long as you're in class. he gives a lot of paper homework and mymathlab homework as well. in class he tries to be as helpful as he can be by answering every question a student has and does care about a students success
Mike Story was a great professor for my statistics class. I would definitely take him again. He does go at a pretty fast pace in his lectures, but stops at the end and asks if anyone has any question. He made the material easier to understand by his examples. The homework he gives is not too much and not too hard. He was a really fun professor.
So my best advice is to do your research first before taking a class from Mike!
Tough teacher!
Was so nervous to take this class, but this professor is amazing! Attendance wasn't taken but the classes were all very content heavy. Best math professor I've had.
Such a nice person. But it was really had for me to follow along. His teaching style didn't match with my learning style.
Mike seems to get a bad rap on rate my professor, but math is a subject that many people tend to struggle with no matter who the teacher is. Mike did his best to make the class fun and came in everyday with an energetic and enthusiastic attitude. He is a picky grader, but after a few homework assignments, you learn what he is looking for.
Mike is a nice guy, but is lazy and not a good math teacher. He doesn't do a good job teaching the class the basics fundamentals to Stats. Instead, he rips though examples on the board. Frustratingly, if you have questions or don't understand the material Mike will play the "I have a secret" game and will give you a run around answer.
No mercy. There were little opportunities to learn from your mistakes.
If you miss class, the material will be incredibly difficult to get through, but he explains everything well in class. Hes an amazing teacher, and hes got open office hours, so you can talk to him about any questions you may have. I wish he taught more classes!
Mike is very funny, but I would never recommend his class. He is one of the most picky professor that I ever had. I would spend hours doing his homework to receive not point at all. I regret the day that I choose him as a professor!
He is going to make you hate math
Mike is a very tough and picky grader. He doesnt clearly state at the beginning of the quarter how he wants his homework labeled. He was always canceling class due to personal matters and he never ended up teaching the section we were supposed to learn that day, we had to learn it on our own although he was the one that was gone.
Mike is an incredibly hard grader with too high of expectations for his students, when he isnt even specific enough for what he wants. Doesnt give clear instructions for the homework and the feedback is very vague. I regret taking this professor!
I have to say that this is by far the worst class I have ever taken. Mike Story is not a helpful teacher in the least bit and does not give good feedback to help you understand material. Yeah maybe I am taking my frustration out on here and I would love to cuss him out to his face, but this idiot will mess up your life and your GPA. Do not take.
IF YOU ARE TAKING HIS CLASS DURING COVID, do not. In my section, he has no lectures, and you had to read typed up notes (which is hard in math). Basically teaching yourself out of an incoherent textbook. Find another teacher that will take the time to host online lectures, because he will certainly not care enough.
Worst Professor Ive ever had in all my years at evcc. Hes ruined my gpa and chances of getting into college, his lectures are not audible and you hear his children crying in the background. If you call him out on this, he will fail you at any chance he gets. Ive had to attend many AA meetings due to this course.
I've looked through the reviews here, and most people say that Mike is a bad professor; that's not true AT ALL. If you're a Running Start student, take his class because I can personally tell you that he's a great teacher. The tests that he gave us were open-note on Canvas. I know I'm a quiet voice among many, but I'm serious. You won't regret it.
Mike is an incredibly picky grader. Your grade weighs heavily on the 5 tests he provides. He will host study sessions twice a week via zoom for any questions pertaining material but when you ask him a question sometimes he goes around in a circle and does not provide a clear answer. You will teach yourself through the quarter.
I really enjoyed Professor Story! I am totally a math nerd so the work wasnt to hard, just time consuming, but if I ever had questions emails where every quickly replied! I really enjoyed this class.
Mike's given me a new appreciation for data & he breaks it down so IT APPLIES TO REAL LIFE. It's not just a Greek-letter formula- its that but in plain language & you UNDERSTAND IT. Mike is A+, challenges u with the course material but I'm lucky to have as my prof. He speaks fast & is engaging - not like most boring math teachers. 10/10 recommend
There's 4 tests throughout the quarter. He gives a review paper and answers, but they are typed up and don't elaborate on the examples/the answer. Half isn't on the test. His "examples" barely help, and if you go during "study hours" to ask for help, it's never clear. He doesn't help students and then wonders why the class average on tests is 65%.
I had Mike for three quarters--Calculus I through III--and thoroughly enjoyed each. His lectures covered the necessary material adequately, and he didn't assign excessive homework. He is very patient and thoughtful about questions and always asks for immediate feedback on his answers to check if he's elaborated enough. 10/10 would recommend.
So I blame myself for my grade of a C I fell behind in the online math work because it is tedious. But overall Mike is a good teacher, he is engaging but when you ask him for help he never gives you a clear answer. He will go around in a circle trying to help you, and often after he "answers" my question I am still lost.
Terrible and not considerate at all. I had an appointment that had to do with mental health and couldn't make it to a class and he proceeded to tell me it was "my fault" for not being in class because I needed help on what I missed that day. When you ask for help, he is useless. Get ready for 40+ online questions on top of work that he grades.
Very picky about the homework you turn in to him through Canvas, and you can expect on average about 4 homework assignments a week. He does try to be accessible outside of class but overall calculus is just a very difficult subject so you are going to have to struggle and study a lot.
Fun teacher, it's true that his homework grading is picky but lets you resubmit to fix it, plus you can always ask what you got wrong. His tests are hard even with extra credit in them, but math is hard anyway. He's also flexible. Most of the bad ratings are from online, so in-person is probably a lot better.
Chill professor with fun lectures. Does assign a lot of homework and can be a little nitpicky with the written ones but he allows resubmissions which you can ask his help with. Exams weren't too bad either he has solid study guides for them and he also offered retakes for all of them except for the final.
Mike talks really loud and tries to engage with his students. I've learned a lot from his office hours and me personally the notes I've taken are really good! He grades very honestly and picky but once you get used to writing equal signs its easy and has ultimately helped me learn even more. I wish I could take Mike for future math classes at EVCC.
The way the course is structured requires a lot of time to study. The most difficult course I have ever taken.
super friendly, willing to stay after class if needed! It was my first quarter at EvCC as a Running Start student and Mike gave me the confidence I needed to do well in class. The coursework was a little tough but I met during office hours and worked through some learning curves. honestly, Mike's the best professor I've had so far. would recommend!
I took Mike for Calc 2 and Calc 3, he's super understanding and friendly. I struggle a lot with math, but his lectures helped me understand the content. There were no quizzes, just online homework and paper homework, which you had two attempts. He had study guides to help you prepare for each exam which were extremely helpful. Take him if you can!
He is a great teacher and is very considerate of his students. i have gotten behind at some points and he always made sure I had the understanding I needed. The tests are easy and nicely spaced out. If people say this is hard, its not the teacher its just the fact its literally statistics. Thats just how it is. He somehow made statistics easier!!
I had Mike for Calc 1 and will be taking Calc 2 with him the upcoming quarter. I slacked in the first couple weeks and honestly fell really behind and was doing terrible in the class. Mike helped me catch up, understand the class and was very flexible. He is a great professor and he helped me get through the quarter given that I slacked off.
You have late work coupons and if you need more he'll give you more. Manageable workload, most assignments are due on Sundays and Mondays. He'll answer your questions VERY thoroughly. Handouts are not worth anything. 1 page of notes for every exam and practice exams with answers to check your work. Highly recommend having him as a teacher. Amazing!
One of the best instructors for sure! He is very kind and considerate. Lectures are very useful. He practically hands out unlimited late passes for homework: usually one write up assignment for the week (one or two pages) and 1-3 online assignments due on Sundays. Also, you get notes for the exams! I recommend!
The most unorganized professor I've had. I have never struggled this much in a math class, but he makes decisions as he goes and every week is different. Would not recommend.
had mike 3 times! super lenient on hw. pretty disorganized on lecture material, but his office hrs are super helpful. dont miss class unless u want to see him at office hrs alot or read the (free) txtbook. loves to answer questions and engaging lecturer. nitpicky on tests, sometimes allows retakes. not too much hw, no group projects mostly.
Mike is an incredible teacher for higher level math classes. He is clearly passionate about math and loves explaining concepts in a way that's comprehensible to students. Much better than previous instructors I've had at EvCC.
He makes me laugh everyday in class. His lectures are captivating, he answers all questions people ask even if they seem like questions you should already know, he loves exploring different ways people will answer a problem. He is very smart, expects you to work, and cares about his students A LOT!
This class was a big pain for me. I have never struggled in a math class until I decided to take this course. Lots of workload and the exams are very brutal.
He's a good lecturer, good at engaging the class, he's amicable and a forgiving grader. His tests are straight-forward and he used a free textbook for the quarter I attended. There is a lot of homework, but most of it is online automated homework and the homework that he himself makes and grades feels relevant and worth keeping up with.
