You had better know your accounting. Get with a good group. You will drown if you don't. Mike is a super cool guy. Hang in there after the mid-term he will really ease up on the work load.
He is a total hottie from New York. Rrrrrochester, that is. Class is generally hard, but not for people who now math.
wow.. someone called this guy a hottie??!!! LoLoL! he's not bad ;) his class was pretty easy for me. i like how he teaches (one of my fav teachers so far).. he gets straight to the point, very understanding! tests are exactly like hmwk probs, so
He is the best professor I have ever had. Very clear and intelligent.
Very good professor. Made class interesting. I definitively recommend this guy.
A great teacher to take for a difficult course. The tests were not easy but he taught the material in a way that it was a little easier to learn. Highly recommended.
Great teacher. If you study and do the homework problems you will get an A in this class
He's a really nice guy and teaches clearly, but the class is EXTREMELY BORING. He is fair and willing to answer questions. Tests are difficult, but if you work through the assigned problems you should be ok. He doesn't take attendance, so you can skip if you understand the material and don't need to sit thru the lectures.
Great Teacher! Easy to talk to! I would take him again!
He is a nice guy but I had problems with his homework. I understood what he taught in class, off of his slides. But the homework was from the book and I couldn't do most of it (it was like brand new material). The tests consist of 15 muti-part word problems. The problems are more extensive than the HW. I had to rush to finish the tests in time.
Great teacher i'll advise everyone to take it
Nice looking, but I thought the tests were very hard, especially the final. Wouldn't help me when I asked him. He was too distracted by the blonde in the first row. Don't recommend at all.
Great prof. wish there were more profs like this at UNLV, would highly recommend taking Sullivan, just show up to class and review the practice exams prior to the exams, and then the graded exams for the final! A+ in my book!!!!!!!!
One of my best teachers ever. Tests are exactly like practice problems.
I liked the class a lot. It was interesting. The tests werent super hard. I got a B but i studied hard before every test. I would recommend him.
Professor sullivan expects a lot from his students. Attending class is the most important part however attendance isn't mandatory. he goes over everything you will need to know for the tests in his notes and will often tell students what to expect on upcoming tests. you MUST study otherwise he has no problem giving you a bad grade.
I'm not a finance major, but I learned a lot in this class. Attendance isn't mandatory, but unless you have a real good understanding of the concepts, plan on being there. He gives a formula cheat sheet, but need to know material to do well on the tests. Grade is based entirely on tests. Didn't use the textbook much.
Don't buy a textbook for his class. Attend class, understand notes and do homework problems. You can easily earn an A in this class.
I had no idea what he was talking about the entire semester. I tried to learn by studying the book and all of its problems, but that just confused me more during tests. He says he gives partial credit on problems and if you pass the final you pass the class, but he didn't follow up on either!
I would highly recommend Mike Sullivan. He is very smart and has a great way of conveying information. You do not need the book. He has lecture notes already prepared, you just need to take notes during class and pay attention. He only tests on material he has given you in class. I would highly recommend him.
Great Professor. Makes the material extremely easy. Good at holding your attention. If you understand it in class, you'll get an A on the exams with minimal study time.
If you are a finance major at UNLV, you should know that when Dr. Sullivan is teaching sign up for the class right away. Really good professor who knows his stuff and makes it crystal clear. Lectures are fun to attend.
Great prof! Very easy to understand for a complicated class. I learned a lot from him. No need to buy the book. All you need is his notes and practice on the problems he gives. Absolutely love him!!!
This guy is laid-back, doesn't try to hard to fit in and loves the Florida Gators. Sullivan is clear, helpful and his tests are easy (even for non-finance majors) if you listen and study. Def recommend
Excellent instructor, making a difficult subject interesting. His test are tough, but fair and his teaching style keeps the material light.
Good class. Enjoyed it.
Dr. Sullivan is a VERY good teacher. He knows his stuff and is very good at teaching. He makes it very clear and easy to understand. He relates his teachings to the real world. The notes that he provides are very helpful. Use those notes to prepare for exams. I HIGHLY RECOMEND PROF SULLIVAN!!
This class is very easy in my opinion, but I learned a lot. Use the notes he gives to study for the exams. Read the chapters before coming to class, understand the problems he covers in class, ask yourself why the formulas work the way they do, and do the homework problems. The bottom line is that this guy is a great teacher.
Really good professor, the class's really easy if you take him. just study through the handouts he puts online and you'll be fine. Doesn't use the book that much. i would recommend taking him
Great teacher, just pay attention in class and understand the note, then you will be fine. doesnt need to read the book at all.
Great teacher, just pay attention in class and understand the note, then you will be fine. doesnt need to read the book at all.
This class was kind of hard for me. I understood the math but not really the concepts. That hurt me on the exams, but the final is 40% of your grade, comprehensive and mostly problems. He tries his best to help and he always curves. The book helped me when I didn't understand (not needed otherwise). Bought mine for $20 on Amazon :)
Entire grade is comprised of four tests (first three are worth 20 % each, final is 40%). The tests are tricky and require you to go above and beyond what you learned in class and did for homework. There is usually a pretty generous curve on both the tests and final grade. Pretty much impossible not to pass this class.
Great Professor. Took him over the Summer, so we covered all of the material in 5 weeks. Grade was based off of 2 tests and final (50%) Doing the hw prior to class is very helpful. He will make every effort to help you understand. Curves tests. I got an A-, could've easily gotten an A if I tried harder.
attend every class, and pay attention. study the notes for the exam. he makes a very difficult subject easy to grasp
Absolutely useless. I spent most of the semester teaching myself the concepts from you tube videos because the book was useless and his teaching was useless. And forget about going to him for help, I made two appointments, neither of which he bothered to show up for.
If you need to take FIN 301, take him. I took Chatfield and it was torture. At least Sullivan's exams don't require you to use the formulas. Just learn the logic, print the slides prior to class, take good side notes and you'll do well. Oh and he likes to talk about bonds & his son all the time.
I took another FIN 301 class with another professor prior to his, don't. Take him he's the best in the whole department. It's a hard subject and he explains it better than any other professor. Only requires to use formulas for 2 problems on the first test after that you can just use your calculator. Study his notes!
Get at least a C on the comprehensive final and you will pass. He gives most of the formulas, and is willing to help figure out where you're missing concepts on tests if you ask him.
Class is easy if you show up and pay attention. Requires some outside work but not much. HW is optional and he goes over it in class, it's not graded. Learn the calculator keys that he teaches and the concepts and you'll do fine. His tests aren't tricky. If you can do the HW questions and the notes questions, you'll do fine.
Good Professor! Very clear about what is going to be on exams. Grade is based on 3 exams 20% each and the final 40% cumulative. Attendance isn't mandatory, but if you want to pass the exams it is necessary!
Awesome finance professor, and very knowledgeable. There are four exams, the final is cumulative. Homework is optional, he does not grade it but it helps with the tests. Also you want to go to class, otherwise you will be lost. I will probably be taking him again for other finance classes.
Great professor. One of the best. He explains things well and makes sure you understand everything. Available for extra help as well. That being said, you must attend class and go to the tutoring lab since the class material is very difficult. If you do not do the above you will fail. Grade is based on 3 exams at 20% and a cumulative final at 40%
Great teacher!! Class is very difficult but he makes things really clear and easy to understand. Take him!! He gives you a formula sheet for all of the exams and that's basically giving you a good grade. I would take him again.
His lecture is amazing, and he explain everything clearly. He only have four exams. If you can do all of his example questions that he talked during his class well, you can get a good grade on his exams.
Most UNLV Finance/Business professors are academics who provide useless/worthless information and/or skills to a student's résumé. Dr. Sullivan brings real-world securities and trading experience from his professional time at Merril Lynch. Grade is based on 3-4 exams (depending on term you take). Non-finance majors might struggle. Great prof.
I took this class my last semester at UNLV. RIG! It was super easy except that you had to go in front of the class and present your work. They are all with your group which works our great however your last presentation is to be presented alone! I almost had a panic attack. Dont take the class if you arent familiar with the stock market/prices.
Professor Sullivan is a great teacher. He breaks finance 301 down so that almost all students can understand the material. He gives you the formula sheets and exam reviews prepare you for the tests. Take him, you won't be disappointed.
He was a fantastic professor, he wants all his students to succeed. Make sure you do the homework problems he assigns even though they aren't for a grade, they really help you understand the concept. He left for two weeks to go to Eurpore right before the finals and that kind of messed with our entire class. But other than that I loved this class.
As someone who struggled with finance last semester with another teacher this teacher helped me pass. Real laid back guy. Gives a formula sheet for the exam. If you break down the formulas & practice it you will pass the exams. Homework optional. Attendance optional but it helps to show up. I would major in finance because of this teacher. A++
Honestly a great guy and teacher. His exams are basically like the notes and throws very little curve balls. He's very understanding with the grading as well and genuinely wants to make sure students get the material. I never did the homework and just went over his in class examples and got an A. Don't buy the book as he provides his own notes.
Not an easy A. You have to understand the "why" not just memorize how to do the problems. i wouldn't buy the book just understand the problems he uses in class and his lecture note problems. theres no extra credit in this class so make sure to do well in the exams and take good notes. the test are basically 90%notes and maybe one curve ball problem
Probably the best professor for Fin301 at UNLV. He really tries to make sure everyone understands the material. Final is cumulative. Overall grade was solely based on tests, no homework, quizzes, or participation cushion so it's not easy to come back from a bombed test. Review lecture notes and put the time in, you'll pass.
Attendance not mandatory but needed if you want to pass. A lot of people on campus will tell you that Fin 301 is a class you have to repeat but Sullivan really helps you understand the subject and he wants you to pass. So do the homework questions (which are not for a grade) and prioritize studying for the class.
I switched my major to finance because of this teacher and I'm glad I did. I heard so much bad things about finance that I was worried but taking it with Sullivan made me not worry as he made it so simple. No need for book. His notes is all you need. No tricks on exams. What he teaches will be there. I wish he taught every finance course.
He is a great professor. No homework but he does suggest practice problems to do. He goes over the assigned questions from the book in class, so the book is not necessary. 3 mid term exams and one cumulative final. He gives you back your previous exams to use as a study guide and the questions are identical on the final.
He is a good guy, but his class is really hard. Beware of his final exam. He is probably the best finance teacher that unlv has to offer, but I really struggled in here. Just study. A lot. More than you think you need to. A lot of people ended up completely bombing the final, including me. So I have to retake. He's a good person though.
3 tests 1 final. 20% of your grade and final is worth 40%. Bomb one test and fail the class. No extra credit, no homework, no attendance points. He only tests to see if you know the material. He's a nice guy and he talks about his kid alot.
He is by far the best Finance professor UNLV has to offer. He explains things thoroughly and is willing to help whenever necessary. Unfortunately, this class consist of ONLY tests and a 40% final. I took this class twice, second time was over the summer with Sullivan. Study hard and do not miss class, this class is difficult, but professor is great
Best FIN301 Professor at UNLV but this class is tough. Go to class, copy his notes, STUDY STUDY STUDY and you will do well. Don't expect to go over notes once and get an A. Sullivan teaches well and keeps the class entertaining. Really nice guy and is willing to help. His class fills up quickly so sign up EARLY so you don't end up with Choi or Lee
Students assume Dr. Sullivan's class is easy since Thistle, Choi and Lee are awful professors. Yes, avoid them at all cost but don't think you are off the hook with Sullivan. This class is HARD but he simply is the best finance professor UNLV has & even then a lot of people failed exams left and right and need to retake. Don't underestimate FIN301
To pass this class, print the notes he provides and then take your own notes on those. Show up to class, star in the notes when he says, "this is an old test question." Do the HW even though he doesn't collect it. Study the HW and notes and you'll pass. Amazing instructor. You won't regret taking him, ESPECIALLY if you're a finance major.
Sullivan is a great professor. He diverges from the book in order to teach the essentials in a way students will understand. The class was tough. Final is cumulative, but the test through out the semester really prepare you for it. I would take this class again. (3 exams + cumulative final)
Took Dr. Sullivan for Summer III and it was a breeze! You need to take the time to study but he makes the class impossible to fail. His tests mimic class examples and HW is not for a grade but makes for good practice. He is amazing and will be there for you if you need the extra help. I would definitely take this class again - just for fun!
I've never given a review, but Dr. Sullivan is hands down the BEST professor I've had PERIOD and he deserves a shout out! Go to class because he literally gives you all of the material you need for his tests. Book is not needed, he provides printouts that have everything and the examples are exactly the same as the tests (just changes the #'s). A++
Mike is a great finance teacher! Take him! He makes it easy to understand which make me like Finance. The math is not hard, you just have to understand the concept. The final is 40% of your grade but it should be easy!
One of the best professor I've ever had. He made it very easy for students, did not go much depth for an introductory finance class. He explains things in a very understandable manner. He lets you know what will be on the exam and gives you problems to practice. As long as you know how to do the problems, you're good for the class.
Really good finance professor. I previously took another finance class and was completely lost. I had to retake the class and found this professor. He is by far leaps and bounds better then the other finance professor I had. He will teach you the material and make sure you understand the principle behind it.
Took him during the summer. Grade consisted only of 3 tests. He provided homework problems from the book to practice but they're not counted for a grade. He explains the math in a simple way to help you understand the logic behind it. Pay attention, study, and do the practice problems and you'll pass.
To any finance major: I strongly recommend doing well in the major so you can be a part of his student investment fund. He only takes 18 people a semester (you have to interview for it), but you get real, hands-on experience running an actual portfolio. There's also guest speakers, industry highlights, and job opportunities for the group.
Not a super easy pass but he makes it easy to learn. His lectures are straightforward & he shows you exactly how to get answers with calculator. The tests are a little challenging but if you attend class and study you can easily get a good grade in the class. Theres only 4 tests that count towards grade. Book only has hw problems but not for grade
Amazing, one of the best professors at UNLV. He makes an outdated and unnecessarily difficult class easy to understand and fun for the student. 3 exams and a cumulative final. Don't skip lectures and print out his class lecture sheets. He provides all the tools for you to do well in his course.
Best finance professor! Course was remote due to COVID. He provides all the resources for you to pass his exams and he explains the concepts clearly. Make sure to print his course notes, since most of the problems on there are old exam questions. Don't bother reading the textbook, but up to you. Grade includes 3 exams and one cumulative final.
Nice guy, but his teaching style is a joke. Speeds through material, advises you to try the homework from the book but come test day that's not what you're tested on. Tests are a guessing game of semantics comprised of concepts he barely mentioned or sped through. Also spends time teaching material that isn't on the exams. For what?
By far one of the best classes. I suggest that anyone who likes investing or is interested in understanding stocks to take this class! He is one of the best professors at UNLV and he is super smart which anyone can benefit to learn from.
Not the easiest class, but he makes it easy. He provides course notes and he goes every every concept clearly. He also shows us how to do each problem with a calculator instead of with complicated formulas, which is definitely a plus. Three exams and a cumulative final. Pay attention in class, study, and do the homework and you'll do well.
There are only 3 exams and 1 final in this class. That's it. No mandatory homework or attendance whatsoever. Don't skip class thinking you'll read the book. If you just go to class, you'll understand it better than the book. Plus, he's AMAZING! Exams are made up of the lecture notes (problems at the end of the lecture) so study those before exam!
Great class! Come to class take notes and read the chapters. do the homework and ask questions and youll pas no questions
I would recommend everyone to take this Professor! He makes you understand things very easily and understandable! Make sure you show up to class or you will fail.
Amazing professor. Took him my last semester of school but literally added a major so I could take his class. Great person who truly cares and helps mentors those who need it. If you are a finance major and you haven't taken a class with him I feel sorry.
Professor Mike seems a very caring and nice professor but the material itself is very hard honestly. Professor Mike tries his very best to help the students succeed. There are 3 exams and a final and also homework but he doesn't grade it. BUT DO THE HW because it will help you with the exams. Honestly, the class isn't hard if you really try.
Do not buy anything, he provides everything. The best professor ever. if you desire to get an easy A, you need to come to each class, not missing even one class. Second, for each exam, solve the examples from the notes he provides. The questions are from the notes. Easy! He is a great teacher and helps a lot.
Sullivan is a really good teacher if you can take him. FIN 301 is a hard class if you're in the business school but not going into finance, but he makes it enjoyable and does as much as he can to teach you. He provides all the notes you need to succeed, just don't miss any classes. He is a really cool person, and the material is lowk relevant.
Professor Sullivan is one of the best professors in the finance department. Your grade is based off of three exams, and a cumulative final exam. Almost all of his test questions come from his lecture notes that you need to print out to succeed. Sullivan is a great professor and also a fantastic person who truly cares about his students. Take him!
Professor Sullivan is a amazing professor. Finance is not easy however he made his lectures fun and easy to understand. I recommend going to his office hours if you do not understand the material. The test questions are from the notes but with different numbers.
Prof Sullivan is awesome! Finance can be tricky but he makes his class super manageable and easy. Your grade consists of the tests only so be prepared, and don't buy the textbook, he provides everything. Just make sure to go to class and take notes, as some test questions are derived from there. Funny and amicable guy as well! Take him!!
This class was ok overall. A lot of the time, I had to teach myself, as Professor Sullivan's teaching style just wasn't a good fit for me. However, highly suggest going over the lecture notes and redoing the practice problems, as they closely mirror the actual exams. Prepare well, as you are graded on only four exams, but you'll be fine.
