Good professor, interesting and funny during his lectures when he wants to be. Good orator with interesting things to say about economics. Makes complex topics fairly simple.
Cool guy, funny in lecture when he wants to be, and personally favorite professor on campus.
Very reasonable on homework and tests, very fun, intelligent, and makes class interesting. If you need a good econ teacher, this is the guy. I highly recommend him.
If you need to take an ECON class at the UO, this is the prof you need to take. Really gets students engage in lecture, even in a class size of 200+. Energetic, keeps material interesting, very clear about new material. Homework is simple, weekly quizzes are easy if you were in lecture, creates practice tests to help out studying a lot.
I took his course in an extremely condensed 3 week term and it was awesome. He is very helpful and is 100% willing to meet with you and go over any questions you have outside of lecture. He is engaging and funny during class and keeps the topics interesting. If you're going to take an Econ class I highly recommend him.
Mike is a grate professor. I am a journalism student, and an so excited that he is now teaching 202, all Journalism students Do Not Fear Econ! I took him for 330 in the summer; so I had him for 3 week. I look forward to taking more classes with him. His lectures were Cristal clear. Homework is hard but go to his office hours. Tests are fair.
My favorite class this term. Honestly, this class has made me way more interested in economics. He's a fun teacher. Really easy class. Take it.
Best Econ professor ever! He knows what he's talking about and everything learned in class was relevant to the exams. Willing to help, and I learned a lot from him.
Honestly, he has to be one of the worst professors i've ever had. I never once walked out of that class feeling like I learned anything useful even after spending all class taking notes. I can't believe anyone in this class found him helpful. I think he made my interest in Economics go from low to lower. Major waste of class time and money, he was.
Terrible teacher, very pompous and makes things way more confusing than they need to be.
I don't understand how this guy gets low ratings. Econ is NOT an easy subject, but Mike does the best he can with it. The material is relevant, his lectures are upbeat, and he always has extra office hours before tests. He goes a little fast on slides, but they're always online. Just show up most of the time, do the readings, and you'll be fine.
I only used the textbook to reference to every once in a while. Mike offered a lot of office hours and answered all my questions. He's funny and witty. Lectures are kinda boring but bearable. Not an easy course, ask for help, go to office hours, and stay on top of things.
Mike is a great guy who makes himself very available during the term. He made study guides, which are helpful. His classes are very dry, and most of the class is pretty frivolous. The class is pretty difficult and you need to stay on top of your stuff.
I've never met a professor who was more available and ready to help students. He offered more office hours than anyone I've heard of, and was always prompt with e-mail responses. The class was a little dry, but it catered to many different majors and couldn't go too much into the actual data. Terrific, dedicated professor.
Smart dude, but his knowledge doesn't reflect well when he communicates during lecture. I found his lectures to be confusing & even random at times. Although his tests are difficult & take time to study for, he provides study guides and lecture slides online. Quizzes before every lecture are online & he gives a couple opportunies for extra credit
Mike is super engaging and tries to make a subject like economics as interactive as possible - however his tests are very hard. The tests require long short-answer portions and often contain material we've never learned. His students disrespect him as he never stands up for himself. Attendance is mandatory via iClickernotecards in lecture.
Mike is an amazing professor. Every time I've gone to office hours he's been extremely helpful and personable. Economics is a pretty dry subject but he helps out big time by giving practice exams before midterms and the final.
Class is hard, although he explains things well.
Really good lecturer. Assigns 5 question multiple choice quizzes before each class which is actually really helpful because it forces you to read and you come into the lecture with a good understanding, then he fills in the holes. Would highly recommend taking a class taught by him. Also gives lots of chances for extra credit.
Urbancic makes everything 10x more confusing than it needs to be. The material is not that complicated but he words his tests poorly which makes every question confusing. The homework is also worded poorly. Tests would be easy if he knew how to write a question properly. Lectures are also super boring.
Listin carefully, RUN FOR YOUR LIFE!!! Believe me very tough exams, the questions from book, vedios, problem sets, sections, and slides. So you need to read a lot, wich takes a lot of time. I will say it again RUN FOR YOUR LIFE! You will regret taking this class if he is your instructor.
Mike is an amazing professor and is very lively in his lectures. You can tell he knows a lot about what he is teaching and he is enthusiastic about it, as well. And, he is incredibly helpful in office hours! Would recommend him to anyone!! :-)
Mike assigns current-day readings that relate to Economics in a relatable way, and make the homework reading interesting and exciting. The lectures are informative, with great examples and his sense of humor makes them enjoyable and he even has the tendency to do some crazy (and fun) activities that get students involved.
Journalism majors, this is the Econ professor you want! Mike focusses on conceptual learning rather than on a lot of math, which makes the class doable and honestly more interesting. He's a great guy and has a good sense of humor. You get extra credit just for attending class, and tests aren't easy, but they're fair.
Mike is one of the nicest professors I've had and he teaches incredibly well. Lectures are interesting and he graded our work within a day or two of turning it in. His explanations on material are easy to understand and he makes students want to participate.
Urbancic is a knowledgeable professor. If you do the work- readings, homework and attend lecture, it is pretty easy and feasible to get an A. Sometimes his lectures can get a little long and seem boring, but overall very straightforward class.
Mike was a great professor. Econ is a boring subject, but it is clear he cares about the topic and wants his students to succeed. He is constantly available for his students! The midterms and final are tough, but go over the lectures and PLEASE GO TO DISCUSSION. It is so useful. Also all iclicker questions are counted as extra credit!
Very rambly professor. Lectures were a little tortuous because the material was so dry, but thats not his fault. MUST READ THE TEXTBOOK or you will fail the course.
Get ready for some good jokes. This guy is awesome and very knowledgeable of macroeconomics. If you ever get a chance you need to ask him why he chose economics as his major and he is sure to crack a couple good ones.
Great lecture giver. Made Econ fun!
My favorite Econ professor. Attendance isn't required, but you get extra credit for showing up and answering iclicker questions. Everything is very straight forward and easy and he makes lectures entertaining and worth going to!
I was nervous about taking Econ even though it's required for my major. He made the topics easy to understand through a variety of examples. Going to discussion really helped me grasp the topic and the math involved. He gives extra credit for attending class through iClicker questions.
EC 330 is definitely the easiest econ class I've taken. Mike is one of my favorite professors. He makes the grading criteria extremely clear, offers extra credit for attending lecture and answering iClicker Q's, and is extremely helpful & accessible for office hours. I highly recommend this class!
Basis economics. Going to class nets you extra credit via iclicker. Mike was a very cool guy and had great references in lecture. There was a large amount of reading per class. Unfortunately towards the week 4 mark economics went out the window and the Democratic Agenda took over. Talking about climate change, Brexit as well as "trigger warnings."
Best teacher I've ever had at UofO. I thought the class was interesting and he made the concepts easy to understand. I would 100% take another class taught by him. He also makes the tests similar to practice problems so you know whats coming.
Be prepared to do lots of problem sets and have reading and a quiz before every lecture. His lectures were fun to attend and you get a lot of information from them, but his tests were very word and confusing. If you attend class, his review sessions, and office hours you will do very well in this class.
Great prof
Great teacher, super funny. Makes it really clear what he expects and has quizzes before each class. VOLUNTEER! It's a chance to win money! One of the best teachers at U of O, study lectures and problem sets for exams, but overall an easy to pass class if you do the work, since iClicker points help you out.
Mike is one of the best professors I've ever had. He's enthusiastic about the material and genuinely cares. The material wasn't too hard, as long as you pay attention in lectures and do the worksheets in class you'll be fine. Game Theory is the 3rd class I'v taken with him, and it was by far my favorite. Would highly recommend!
Mike's lectures are the best that I've experienced in college because he's funny, he uses real world events to convey the material, and he keeps the class engaged. Academically very helpful and not too difficult.
Mike's a passionate teacher. He uses real world examples and lots of in-class volunteer participation to demonstrate concepts. He's also very accessible and easy to talk to outside of class. A good amount of test questions come from lectures and the readings he posts on Canvas.
Mike's lectures are interesting, but not comprehensive enough. It's hard to cover everything in Principles of Macroeconomics in ten weeks. Discussion sections, worksheets, and lecture activity sheets are very helpful for the midterms. That's not to say the midterms are still extremely hard. Extra credit is provided via iClicker. Good professor.
I 100% recommend Mike. He's a great professor and actually cares about teaching you. He always comes prepared to class. Attendance is not mandatory but I recommend going because you will actually learn. There is a chapter quiz before class but that's not even bad its only five questions. He's a funny guy, very approachable and understanding.
You're in for a treat if you have Mike for an Economics class. He condenses information into lectures well. There are quizzes before every lecture, but they're straightforward. Problem sets are great opportunities to learn material before tests. Lectures are fun and engaging. It's evident he cares deeply. Large amounts of extra credit. Awesome!
Mike is a great lecturer, every lecture was entertaining and interesting, extremely helpful in office hours and is extremely approachable
My favorite professor. He is one of the many reasons I changed my major to economics last year. He wants his students to succeed and gives many extra credit opportunities in the form of clicker questions (up to 5% bonus credit). Would recommend
Mike is an awesome person and professor. He is super laid back and a great teacher. His lectures are engaging and he had iClicker questions for extra credit. He was great for Econ 202, bit I hated Econ 101. Seriously do not take Econ 101 unless you have to. It wasn't because of his teaching, its just a bad class. But Mike is great himself!
Does not cover material clearly. Tests are extremely difficult and the practice tests did not reflect what was on the actual exam in any shape or form. Would not recommend
Took his econ101 class, which was kind of hard in some sections, but mostly easy. The class is very test heavy, with about 32% of your grade being the final, which seemed like a lot for a 101 class. His lectures are funny though, and the homework is easy. The essays are also pretty straightforward. Overall not a hard class to get a B in.
I like Mike as a teacher. He is fun and interesting. The tests were really hard, and we had very low class averages on the tests, one of which he did not curve. There are two quizzes a week on the reading, a problem set to do every few weeks, and lots of reading. When I talked to him about not getting one of my tests back, he was kind of rude.
Mike's lectures are very thorough and pretty entertaining for an econ class. There are online quizzes before every lectures, some of which cover an entire 20 page chapter. The midterm and final are a big piece of your grade, but it's doable, and Mike is very approachable when you have problems.
Mike is a great lecturer and he makes his lectures interesting so it's easy to pay attention. As an econ major I'm biased, but I found the coursework very interesting and easy to study. As long as you do the required reading and pay attention to the lectures it shouldn't be hard.
Lectures are very basic compare to the content on the exams. Discussion class is also very basic compare to the content on the problem sets.
Great guy, fun to talk to. The course is textbook heavy, so make sure you read, and also there is a quiz everyday online before class. The lectures are very powerpoint heavy, which I am not a fan of, BUT Mike makes up for it by being available to answer your questions and trying to make a boring subject as fun as interesting as you possible can.
pros - awesome guy, easy short quizzes before each lecture, he makes lectures interesting cons - the content on the tests were so much more harder and complicated than what we learn in class and in the readings. Like super hard. he did a curve on 2 of are 3 tests which helped a little, but overall the average for the class was pretty bad
Prof Urbanic gives great lectures and the assignments and quizzes before each class is fairly easy as long as you read. The class is cumulative so you really have to understand the information for each chapter because they all add up. GO to lectures and discussions because the handouts are valuable for studying
Finals and Midterms are extremely difficult and Urbancic did a very poor job of preparing us for them. Find any other medium to take this course if you can. This class expects way more than just economics from you if you want to pass
Pretty awesome dude who tries to make economics fun. He is always upbeat and energetic and it helped me stay engaged in the class the whole time.
One of the most poorly organized 100 level classes currently offered by the UO. Exams make up about 70% of your grade, and they question how well you know very specific examples of homework assignments, rather than concepts presented within the class itself. Attendance is required for iclickers, but lecture is usually just wasted time. Take BA101
First class I've ever dropped. Completely incompetent in giving a coherent lecture that accurately portrays what will be on the exams. Discussions are extremely dull and irrelevant, and a complete waste of time. Take this class online or with another professor cause Urbancic needs to seriously check himself
Pretty straightforward class. Couple problem sets due throughout the term but not much HW. Weekly reading quizzes only 5pts each. Reading assignments can be a lot sometimes but manageable. If you read through his slides and go to class for iClicker you should be fine. Some people found the class difficult but I thought it wasn't too bad
Mike is probably one of the most meh professors Ive experienced. Not totally awful and not totally amazing. Lectures were kinda boring but he always tried to make it enjoyable which was appreciated. Work load wasnt too tough. I recommend going to office hours with GEs because theyll work through all the problems on assignments with you.
Mike is friendly and it's clear that he wants his students to learn and do well in his class. There are reading quizzes before every class but they're easy and iClicker points can make up for lost quiz points. Gives clear lectures with real world examples. Has some office hours in EMU to be more accessible.
3 tests & they are beyond hard. You can't really study the lectures/the textbook to pass. You have to be able to break down the concepts & apply it. MC but also a couple of written questions. I had 100% on quizzes & problem sets so iClickers didn't help my grade. 70% of your grade is the tests. If you suck at tests (cumulative, no notes) don't take
He is a good teacher and amazing to explain concepts and make them fun. But this class is weird, It is good to know about the probability, but it goes way too far to the point where I will never use that in my daily life. Come on
this guys a boss
One of the best lecturers the UO has to offer and all-around a great guy. That said, his exams are next to impossible and it doesn't matter how much you study. Practice tests are utterly worthless and you can ace everything but if you get bad test grades, you won't pass with anything above a C.
Good professor who gives easy assignments, but the tests are quite difficult in comparison to everything else.
Mike is a great professor and he cares heavily about economics and his students. He's also relatable and funny which helps. The exams are stupidly hard though and its a real stretch to get anything above a 90 on the exams.
Mike was a great professor for macroeconomics, he is clearly passionate about what he teaches. There were a lot of little things to do throughout the week which was sometimes bothersome but overall it gave a lot of opportunities to solidify the course concepts. I found tests to be a lot harder than hw but lots of easy points to help balance it out.
Generally heavy workload but course is administered well and the difficulty of assignments and tests is reasonable. Amount of start-up work at the beginning of the term is excessive in my opinion.
Mike is such an awesome guy! I'm never bored in lectures since he's constantly running around and is very entertaining and funny. We have about a disc board post, 5-7 pg HW sheet, and one inquisitive due each week so it's really not that hard. He also explains everything super well so it's not the hardest thing to understand.
One of the best econ profs I have had. His lectures are fun and entertaining. He is very organized and makes econ fun. In EC202 I had 4 mini exams each worth 10% of your grade and a final that was 20%.
I love Mike's teaching style, and his lectures were super helpful for understanding the content. All of the tests were open note which was super nice. There was a fair amount of homework, but the same format every week so it's easy to plan out your time. I would 100% take his class again and definitely recommend!!!
Mike Urbancic is a great professor. As an Economics Major I took Econ 101 my first semester at UO. This is a great class after I move on to the 200 levels. Also he is so good there is so much extra-credit opportunities and there is a curve at the end of the semester. For example, my final grade was an 85.33% but the letter grade is a B+. Mike
Mike is super funny and I always looked forward to his class. The homework is pretty light, but don't let how well you do on that determine your readiness for the midterm & final. STUDY HARD FOR THOSE EXAMS. The "textbook" was just a book we spent 2.5 weeks reading then wrote a short report on. He is easy to reach out to, helpful, & transparent.
Fairly dry class, but if you keep up with all the assignments you'll do fine. Weekly discussion board and reading quizzes make up a good amount of your grade, with a midterm, final, and final report. I wouldn't use his activity sheets and would suggest taking your own notes if you take notes.
Mike was an amazing professor to take for the first term of college. Even though his lectures werent mandatory he made them so entertaining that I always wanted to go. Some of the concepts can be confusing but he explains things very well, and using great analogies to make you understand it. Really nice guy, highly recommend.
Made the class so fun. Gives a perfect amount of homework that you are forced to understand material but it isn't busy work. Literally the best
Urbanic cares about his students and wants everyone to succeed. His grading setup is simple, each week there is an Inquisitive, Discussion post, and worksheet due so you can't really forget what is due each week. The mini-exams are weighted pretty heavily. He offers extra credit on homework and for participating in class and discussion section.
Mike is a good person however his lectures do not help prepare for the 4 "mini exams" throughout the term. These mini exams are more like full on midterms with over 20 questions struggling to finish within an hour each time with a few short answers that have wording that lead you to overthink and mess up the mini exams.
Mike is the best! Genuinely cares about students + passionate about the subject. Goes above and beyond by sending reminders when things aren't turned in. So welcoming during office hours. Lots of extra credit, open note tests, and lectures are manageable even if Econ is not your best subject. I wish I could have Mike as a professor for every class!
Mike was great! If you truly put in the work you can get a good grade, but the "mini-exams" were very difficult, and I was not at a capacity to truly put my 100% effort forth, hence why I didn't do very good. However, this has nothing to do with Mike, as he truly did all he could to prepare us, and I truly felt he cared a lot for each of us.
overall, mike's great! he does 4 mini exams instead of a midterm which are online but still difficult- these are my biggest complaint but still better than a big exam. lectures are good and he makes it worth it to go in person. also love his extensive extra credit system! homework load was enough but not too much.
Honestly, he's the best professor I've ever had. He makes sure to make every lecture fun and special. Genuinely invested in your wellbeing and success, and really interesting to talk to. The homework is easy - there's not a lot of it and it takes minimal time. You can get up to 28 points of extra credit. Everyone should take his class!
He is always really positive and seems like he actually wants to be there teaching you. The lectures aren't mandatory which is nice but he makes them interesting. He's always responded to emails quickly and seems understanding to whatever's going on and is ready to help
MIKE ROCKS!!! Econ is kind of boring and hard but he made the lectures bearable and interactive. Sometimes gave out donuts or cash to make a point. Extra credit is given for showing up and using an I clicker as well as for going to section and midterm/final taken open note online. He is so nice and supportive and responds to emails quick.
Lectures are pretty boring and drawn out, Mike is definitely a rambler. It's not too difficult of a class though, other than the moderately tough mini-exams every 2 weeks. I'm neutral about Mike.
Really chill professor. Not too difficult of a grader, but lecture content could be a bit dry. Mike on the other hand is pretty funny and seems like a nice guy.
He is a very nice and funny guy. He does a really good jobs at keeping the lectures engaging. Grades are based on a few different things not just test and quizzes. The textbook is online and free which is also nice. The only negative thing I would say is that the mini quizzes can be pretty challenging. Mike slays
Mike is an amazing professor who actually cares about his students and their understanding of the material. Exams are online and open note, and he uses a free online textbook. Keeps students engaged in class, even offering up money and prizes to make economic examples. Overall a great professor, can't wait to take EC202 from him next term!
He is very kind n approachable,he will always be there to help n answer questions however his workload is heavy n the exams are HARD n graded heavy which is frustrating since we have 3 separate assignment every week n extra credit but its still not enough.I wish he would as least drop one of the exam scores especially since he has to curve them all
Mike is a great prof for Econ 201; while you have to work hard to get an A, his class is easy to keep up with and get points. We have required activity sheets and clicker points for every lecture, so attendance and participation matter if you are going to succeed. We have four mini-exams and a final online. I recommend him for the class.
Mike is a great professor/lecturer and a nice guy, but he needs to work on the wording on his exams. The four mini-exams and final were extremely difficult even though I did all my reading and studied his lectures. The vast majority of your grade is the exams, so if you don't do well on them, you can't get the grade you want in the class. Very hard
This is NOT a difficult class. Mike gives you all of the materials you need to succeed, all you have to do is halfway pay attention. I browsed the internet for every course, never studied, and finished with a 97. The lectures are long and can be really painful, but this is legitimately one of the easiest college courses I have ever taken. Gpa Boost
Mike teaches EC 101, EC 201, and EC 202 in order all year. I strongly recommend taking them all in order with him, because he's a fantastic lecturer and a fairer grader than the Econ professors my friends have. That said, don't expect it to be easy if you're not super familiar with graphs. Many of the mini-exam questions can be very convoluted.
He is a great professor and is the better out of the econ 202/201 profs. You have opportunities to get good grades other than just exams but the exams are hard. Weekly online discussion posts (very easy) and you have to annotate the online textbook. Attendance is mandatory with worksheets and extra credit is given through iclicker participation.
Mike was fine, but he just rambles a lot which is hard for someone like me to pay attention to. He would constantly talk about hypothetical scenarios in order "prove his teaching point", but I never really understood it. The tests didn't really pertain to the lectures. He's average.
I have never had to work this hard for an A-. There is an excessive amount of work in this class. Most Econ classes will just have a midterm and a final. Mike forces you to read every page and the 4 exams were very difficult. The final was awful. It sounds like he used to be nicer, but he takes his job way too seriously now. Take with anyone else.
This class was very easy, but I think that is partly because it is a 101 and also because Mike is such a great teacher. We had a lot of reading, especially from weeks 2-4 but it ended up all being worth it. If I take another econ class I will definitely try to take it with Mike
Mike is a very supportive and understanding teacher. While he doesn't give a lot of feedback on assignments, he provides lots of help, resources, and reminders that I didn't expect a college prof to give. He uses memes and tweets in his lectures and is very engaged during said lectures - you can tell he really wants to connect with students.
I enjoyed this class but I flunked the mid-term. If I hadn't been bedridden I probably would have passed the class with an easy A. The hybrid class structure worked well but the lectures were necessary to get that extra insight on the week's topic. He is very entertaining and insightful in every lecture. If you have any interest in econ, its solid.
Some of the most boring lectures I have gone to. He rambles about unrelated topics for about 90% of the lecture. Average grade of the Midterm was a 18/32 and instead of thinking about changing up the class format or reflecting on his teaching style he said "study harder" and did not curve it or anything. I got a good grade but I dont recommend mike
Nice guy, but most boring lectures ever. Never once got through his entire slideshow or activity sheets. Never seen a professor grade you worse on an exam for getting something wrong than not answering at all. The class average was around 74 despite the simple material. Took over 2 months to grade the discussion responses. Prepare to be frustrated.
Tests are really frustrating. He gives basically zero study materials aside from just saying to read over the slides. Additionally, the course assignments - annotated readings and discussion sections - do literally nothing to prepare you for the type of questions that will be on the exams.
urbancic makes an amazing effort to get students to engage and understand. uses funny memes and tweets to get his points across and is overall very caring. tests are a little unclear sometimes on what exactly you're being tested on but provides lots of resources to understand class topics
Tests are online, he bases half of the questions on random articles and 30-minute-long videos instead of being more focused on concepts. His lectures aren't the most engaging and I feel like you could learn way more just by reading the textbook. Tests are worth over 50% of the grade and have zero curve even when test performances are poor.
Mike seems like a really good guy, but his class was far too difficult. I wasn't expecting an easy A, but the online tests were way too difficult. One of the questions even had every answer correct. Needs to learn how to write a multiple-choice test.
Inaccessible outside of class, rambles in lectures to the point that people begin to talk, a TON of work per week between readings and discussion readings. The mini-exams are just midterms and there's four. You're tested on pretty specific content from the readings just as often as economic theory if not more. Too many assignments. Take Waddell
I might as well have taken an alien linguistics class because this class made absolutely 0 sense
Mike is a great guy and a good professor. His lectures get a bit boring but he does his best by handing out free money and snacks at times. Some fun games to keep the class engaged. Tests are very difficult but he curves and can get you back a few percentages. The book and book quizzes we had were very easy.
This professor was god awful. He tried to be funny and make lectures entertaining, so I credit him for that. But his midterms and finals averaged 50%. I only passed the class because he handed out extra credit like crazy in the final week. His test questions came out of nowhere and had the most niche details without focusing on general concepts. NO
Mike's lectures can be dry, but with Unstuck ai and the textbook, you can succeed. Assignments don't prepare you for exams, but staying engaged in class makes a difference. Expect a challenge, but a manageable one.
Mike is the worst professor I've ever had. Do not take his class. He rambles on and on about irrelevant topics in his lectures and leaves the entire class confused. I am a student who really cares about my grades, and because of the lackluster lectures and missing structure, I have absolutely no clue what to even study before his tests.
Don't take him. He barely gets on topic in class and rambles over and over about stuff that has the smallest correlation. In addition his work each week isn't that bad just super busy work and with extracurriculars it sucks. Also his exams are so specific it's a joke. Would not take him again, only because is required.
No notes on any test, and a ridiculous amount of information to be memorized. Tests have a lot of "multiple-choice multiple-response" questions and if you get one wrong the whole thing is wrong. He also led the Palestine protests outside of Lilis. Dude is weird.
Guys, if you're reading this...find a different professor for economics. The term "the professor makes or breaks the class" has never been more true. The class itself, along with the information you're required to learn isn't to crazy. But he is AWEFUL at teaching. His Mean score for his midterms where F's... I shall say no more.
Nice person and clearly cares about his students. He promotes his office hours every week, gives out extra credit for coming to class, and gives out weekly reminders about when things that are due. His tests are hard and so I wished he would give out a practice test before each midterm and final. Take advantage of his office hours.
The worst professor ever. He puts questions on exams about a specific part of a video shown in a lecture from week 2 and backs it by saying to study just review every slideshow and video posted in the 10-week course. Do not take his class.
Professor Mike is a good person that cares about his students, but he often gets off topic during his lectures. His tests are hard with the average being a 50-60%. The tests contain very specific details in the readings or videos that he assigns that you'd think wouldn't be on the test. Only take this class if you're willing to study A LOT.
There's really no homework, but you must compensate the time with studying. As mentioned prior, the exams often include very specific models that may have been mentioned in lecture for a brief moment, which makes you regard them as insignificant. If you're genuinely interested in macroeconomics, you'll love this class. Go to office hours!
Passed the class with an A because of the curves and extra credit!! His tests are hard, but he makes up for it by giving curves on every test and giving out lots of extra credit. Very friendly and if you go to his office hours, the concepts will make a lot more sense. If you like to push yourself and want to learn more about econ, try this class.
I've taken both EC 201 and 202 this was much more difficult. The wasn't difficult but there was a lot of homework that was irrelevant to the lectures and the tests. It felt extremely redundant and just an unnecessary class. I never knew that to study on tests and found the lectures were confusing and irrelevant.
Good professor. Coursework consisted of weekly readings (online, free), going over material in class, and then a discussion at the end of the week. He curves tests, gives extra credit (ATTEND LECTURE), and late work can be turned in for partial credit. As long as you attend the lecture and do the assigned material outside of class, you'll be fine.
I found his lectures to be very hard to follow, but the class was easy to navigate outside of lectures. There were very clear expectations and guidelines for all assignments and exams, which was very helpful. He curved each exam and the overall class grade, as well as dropped lower scores on assignments. I recommend heavy self-studying for exams.
Urbancic makes it clear how to study for his exams, and most of it comes from the lectures, which consist of him rambling about topics in the slides for a long time. Although, I appreciated how he stretched out concepts for macro in lectures compared to the opposite for micro, but you have to be very focused to take in what he's saying
Very Very dull. Slides have little to no information. No study guide, what is going to be on the test is very unclear. Class try's to be interactive, but is not. Would rather have had any other teacher maybe one that knows about the subject and stays on topic better.
Don't take Urbancic unless you have to. Everyone does poorly on the exam, and the curve is nowhere near sufficient enough to bring your grade back up, so nearly nobody has an A. Homework is easy and his tests are simply what ruin the class.
His lectures can be a little boring, but he does give worksheets to follow along with. These worksheets highlight the important things from the slides which is nice. By doing the IClicker students can get extra credit. Exams can be easy if you study.
Amazing teacher and really cares about economics and his students. Please pay attention during his lectures, he puts a lot of effort into his presentations.
Mike is very passionate about macroeconomics, but his teaching style ruins the class and makes it very difficult to follow and stay engaged. The class is heavily weighted on exams, which questions are highly specific and niche. It's hard to do well in the class, even if you study the entire unit! The exam will cover the most niche and odd questions
Just bad, that's all. Don't take him if you don't have to.
not a ton of HW. tests are difficult but manageable despite the class average being in the 50-60s on the tests. generous curve implemented at end. i personally didn't take to Mikes lecture style but his knowledge of economics is apparent.
Mike is an incredible professor - an inspiration to thousands of students. Interesting that the UO can afford all of these new buildings and advertising, but they can't afford to keep someone who has been a real treasure for the university for over a decade. His passion for Economics and teaching will be missed.
Mike was an amazing EC202 professor. How abhorrent of the University to lay him off—he will be greatly missed.
Clear grading criteria but test and lecture heavy. Lectures are not very engaging.
missed midterm because i got the timing wrong, didnt hesitate to go out of his way and make a time for me to make up the midterm! would recommend.
Everything that is needed to ace the exams is fully on the slides which he posts on canvas. The worksheets handed out every class are also helpful too. Light homework readings on perusall and discussion worksheets. On both midterms I have gotten over 90%
Would stop in the middle of the lecture and walk to the back towards talking students and tell them that they should be talking on discord instead. Also walks around the entire hall for the entirety of the lecture which is distracting. Midterms are quite easy and you can use a 3x5 notecard. Gives worksheets that follow lectures but still boring
Good professor, is very passionate about his subject material. Lectures tended to drag on a bit occasionally, and he sometimes gets a little caught up in explaining something and loses/confuses everyone as a result. Moderately light assignments and exams, just make sure you do the reading and practice midterms. 3x5 notecard allowed.
Mike is very chill and this class is quite easy with posted materials, weekly understanding checks, practice tests, and notecard cheatsheets allowed. He is also available outside of class. Lectures can be meandering sometimes, but it's kind of endearing and never a problem. With some effort this class is easy to succeed in and Mike is very helpful.
