An interesting teacher for sure! He uses many methods to try and build your understanding of the course such as slides, class discussions, working out the problems, some humor (very funny), and he also spends time after class. I'd highly recommend this teacher.
Mike is very clear. Subjec is a little difficult. He makes it easy for you to understand.
Great Instructor, the subject was just hard but he would try anything for students to understand like; offer office time, stay after class..over and beyond with help. Nice guy
I loved Philosophy in the Cinema. The content was incredibly interesting and the films were splendid. Vanquickenborne was very good at validating everyone's opinions during class discussion. Highly recommended.
Mike is a very laid back teacher. I believe he's from CA and he reminds me of a surfer. I had previous experience with the material but Mike did a great job of helping me to remember the concepts for logic. He tries hard to help his students to understand the material in class. Make sure you keep up with the reading/problems and you'll do well.
Laid back and a very good teacher!
Philosophy in the Cinema is such an interesting class! Mike is a great teacher, very passionate about his field. The homework is pretty minimal (for my class, it was a podcast with a short assignment every week) and a term paper at the end of the quarter. He's really a great teacher, I can't recommend his classes enough!
Logic - He was excellent! Fun teacher, got the point across. It was a tough subject but he was good about answering questions clearly and helping when anyone needed extra help. Definitely sign up for his class.
I took Mikes Logic class and he was amazing!I never could understnd the texbook but when Mike explained it in class, I could understand. He is extremly eager to help the students understand and he always encourages people to come to him when they need help (ie offering to stay after class, office hours etc.) I would really recommend his class!
Just took intro to logic over the summer. The subject is quite difficult, but mike does a masterful job explaining the material and makes it as easy as possible. He is excellent in explaining things. Made a 12wk course workable in just 4wks. Can't recommend enough, one of the best professors at EVCC.
Tough class but mike was one of, if not the best teacher I have had in my two years at Everett.
GREAT TEACHER! Dry humor, which is always helpful in these types of classes. Class is more about western religions and the age old question of the proofs/non-proofs of the existence of God. He makes very good points for both sides. Fair teacher. Go to class you miss a lot when not in.
Makes the class interesting. Class info is hard to grasp in general, but he does a good job explaining it and helping the students to understand. Always open to questions, and pretty funny.
This guy is useless. The class would be AWESOME, if he updated his podcasts as they are SIX years old, made during the Bush administration. Also, he believes that everyone should drop their whole lives for his class. This is community college so we can go to school AND work, but in order for this to work the teacher has to be more comprehensive.
Mike does not help students understand anything in class. The podcasts are outdated and boring. He does not clearly explain any of the reading but expect you to understand it all prior to class. In class if a student doesnt understand Mike does nothing to help them understand better. He also talks to his students like they are children not adults.
Mike is a great teacher though he can be rough for grading on essays and writing assignments. He is very good about making concepts clear, however. His expectations are clear as well. If you have a question he can clear it up. Attendance isn't mandatory but I recommend it!
Mike knows the topic very well and uses a combo of textbook, lecture, & online videos to reach everyone. He does move thru the material quickly, so attend class & keep up with online materials. Makes himself available for add'l help & has good sense of humor. I recommend him & would take a class from him again.
The material is extremely difficult, and his explanations do nothing more than compound the difficulty. I wish this would be made more clear during registration. Will never take another symbolic logic class again. I'm interested in it, but this experience has shied me away.
Some people will fine the material ungodly difficult, but not all. People say it's like math, but I hardly passed math 80, and I understood logic well. It's stuff like all apples are fruit but not all fruit are apples. All A is B. Not all B is A. But he has a sense of humor, and he works hard to explain the material.
Ethics was an alright class and an moderately easy A if you do all of the assignments and essays. He needs to slow down lectures, and show examples of good work philosophical writing from other students which I think would of helped a lot. I struggled a lot but he worked with me at my own level which was a plus. #CriticalThinkingClasss
It's easier to show up to class and sit through the lectures than try and learn on your own, although it's totally possible to ditch and self-teach (but he takes attendance every day). His lectures were clear, to the point, and went along perfectly with his online lecture notes and the textbook. But symbolic logic is like algebra wo any numbers.
Can he be more slow and boring. He gives lectures like you would expect a 90 year old to. He tries way to hard to be funny and in the mean time makes it confusing. I wish I had a fast forward button during his classes. Any symbolic logic I learned was from the textbook not him.
Mike is quite possibly the best professor I have had at EvCC. The material can get a little confusing at times, but he explains it so clearly and has so many resources to help you understand it. Don't be afraid to ask questions in this class. It is, as someone else said, algebra with no numbers and it continues to build on itself over the quarter.
Great class. Wish I would have gone there more than a year so I could take more of his classes. Hus humor is dry and witty, making sitting through the lecture bearable. He also gives great feedback, usually on every assignment you turn in. Expect a lot of homework and reading, and to participate in class to get those extra credit points.
Mike is an amazing teacher. At times the subject matter would be difficult to understand , but he would clearly explain key points. The classroom discussions were fascinating, I feel more knowledgeable due to this course. I am excited to take more classes in this field.
This was a hybrid class. Make sure you watch the online videos because it fills in what the textbook leaves hanging and gives the alternate terms he's more likely to use. He's got a great dry sense of humor and is good about making sure everyone understands. Do the practice problems and the material is easy enough. It's just math without numbers.
Mike is easily one of the better EvCC teachers. He gives the course material in good chunks, always does his best to make sure that everyone understands before moving on, and uses good metaphors and examples to explains his points, A true teacher who cares about his student's progress, he's one hell of a guy.
I would rather take the whole Calculus series. This teacher is nice but I think that PHIL120 should have graded homework not JUST exams. I was willing to work very hard for this class but I feel your grade is based more on intelligence than work ethic. I am a straight A student but this class was way to hard for me.
Amazing instructor. Don't try to skip a class and teach yourself the chapter, you'll regret it in the end. Allows a full page front and back of notes for exams. Decent amount of homework that's hard to understand but he quickly goes over it at the next class and clears up any confusion. I wouldn't want any other instructor for this difficult class.
Mike is great, has a balanced view, and has very funny attempts at being funny, including occasionally on quizzes. There are few assignments, but the Exams are very high in points (400/500) but its not too bad. Take notes!!!!! Notes are allowed in quizzes. He's kind and willing to explain, also he encourages polite arguing of points disagreed upon.
Fun instructor with a variety of things assigned in the class. He definitely keeps it interesting and makes sure that you are 'critically' using your brain. There were lots of assignments and tests but as long as you participate in discussions and put decent effort forth, you'll do great! Extra credit at the end to spike up your grade at the end!
This was one of the most fun and interesting classes I have taken at EvCC. The class was easy and the only textbook was a novel that can be rented at the bookstore for under $10. There were only about 3 or 4 assignments for every two weeks and I finished each two week module in just a few hours. This class requires good writing skills.
I loved how well-organized this class was. All of the required readings and materials were easily accessible from the website and the the teacher was quick to correct any broken links or test questions. Course material progressed logically and made sense. No extra credit, grading is tough but fair.
Logic was a really fun class! Mike really helped make difficult topics easy. Unfortunately, logic is one of those subjects that clicks for some but not for others. I loved this class, but others hate it. You will use the book. Your grade is mostly tests, with two quizzes. A full sheet of notes front and back was allowed for the tests.
Mike is a amazing teacher!!!! I love his humor and the class is well structured. He's also a very funny well balanced guy. I can't recommend his class enough.
I wouldn't recommend him to anybody, he does a poor job of teaching and when you need help he does a poor job explaining and makes you more confused after. He moves way to fast in lectures and just assumes every student gets what he's saying. His class is a waste of time and money and he can't relate to the students in order to help them.
He's a god prof. He weighs tests heavily, and there are only 2 in the class. So you should study very hard. His test will be good if you pay attention during lectures and read carefully the material. If I could stress one thing in this class it would be to take amazing in depth notes, bc you can use them on the tests. Participate! It will help ;).
Mike is the best teacher I've met so far. He makes those damn hard stuffs to be easy and he's pretty fun. I really enjoy his class. I would say that you would definitely pass his class if you don't skip the class, and do the homework even though it doesn't count toward grades.
i was so frustrated in this class. You think you're getting out of a math class, you're not. It felt like a waste of time. I wish I had taken math instead. You had to rely entirely on the lectures and our website, Aplia, for learning. I look up YouTube videos to help understand. I got an A but I worked way too hard for it. Don't recommend.
I think someone needs to remind him that an intro class should not be expected to master the topics. Regardless of effort, if you do not come to the conclusion he is expecting you are docked points. Absolutely no real beneficial feedback given. This class was a waste and I won't ever take him again. Philosophy having a right or wrong answer is wild
The teacher was fine, the subject was just difficult to understand. This isn't the hardest class just make sure you study for the tests. And do watch the lectures.
Hello, I took this class for some general requirement credits. I thought this class would have been interesting or fun, but it was exactly the opposite. Material is confusing and absolutley useless. Professor's feedback is awful and unhelpful. I had emailed him for some advice, and his response was absically "do better". Do not take his class.
He seems like a nice teacher but he is a horrible grader. This is introductory not advanced philosophy. To pass the class you have to know every small detail of at least 60 pages for the chapter. He has 2 assignments and a quiz that are due every 2 weeks. His instructions are not clear and he will mark you down even though its not your fault.
I took both PHIL120 & PHIL100. His expectations are clear and, despite previous comments, he doesn't grade you down for disagreeing with him. I wrote extra papers for my Honors contract, often disagreed with him, & got an A+ in both courses. He respects strong logical arguments. He has always been prompt in communication and I enjoyed his classes.
He tries to be your friend. But doesn't. Want help? Prepare to be slandered indirectly that you just need 'try'. Want a good GPA? Well, I studied for 2+ hrs a day (not counting lectures) and I still only get B on tests. Only 8 grades (including extra credit- which is like 1% of total grade) which means 100% up on STRESS. Save yourself, don't take
For online, the entire class is graded by 4 exams, which was really intimidating. Maybe the subject just came easy to me (weirdest subject ever btw), but if you do ALL the work, the exams are easy in comparison to the textbook problems. He responds super quickly to emails and is really fun and understanding. Easy A if you do the work.
I would not recommend taking a class from Mike if you are the kind of student who wants to get help from a professor to help you understand the course material better. I reached out numerous times for help and he didn't give me any extra help. Also responds to emails slowly, not helpful overall.
The class structure was complex and not at all student-friendly. grades are based on four exams and extra credit was based on practice sheets that need to be completed before the exam. After completing all the teacher never gave any extra credit. It was a huge mistake to take his class, not at all recommended. There is no opportunity to improve.
There are 4 exams for your grade. Nothing else. He doesn't answer emails at all, he doesn't seem to care. I emailed over five times because the lectures which were 8 years old did not align with the readings for the third exam. Super confusing and not at all student oriented class. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!! Worst decision taking his class!
I you agree with his view in thing your good. But if you don’t expect to “not understand” The materials in this class were really interesting and I enjoyed learning the topics. he acts as if he is the only one who is right and his views are correct. If you want a horrible experience don’t recommend. It was a struggle passing
I had to take his class over again and failed both times. The only way to do well in the class is to do well on all four exams. He does not offer helpful feedback or do a good job of answering specific questions. If you are not someone who can read a book and grasp all the material with no extra help or class meetings, do not take his course.
If you don't HAVE to take this class don't. The instructor himself is fine but his class was a pain, quizzes are difficult unless you actually remember every detail from the readings. Feedback was never really helpful.
Textbook is hard to understand, so if you don't get exactly what everything means, you won't do good on assignments and he won't make any exceptions for you. Tough grader, I've stayed up till 1AM doing HW and still manage to get majority of things wrong and feedback is bad he'll be like " that's not what this person is trying to say" and that's it
I tried reaching out, no response, I tried meeting him in his office, HES ABSENT. His coursework IS EVEN WORSE. He pre-recorded all of his lectures from 2014, so he doesn't do a damn thing. During exams he sits in his chair and sleeps. I try so hard in this class, but he doesn't have a single assignment, and 100% of our grade is from exams. Im done
Excellent course material and design; super-excellent instructor! Course expectations and instructions are clear and fair. It is evident that Mike is incredibly knowledgeable in philosophy; his lectures make complex concepts comprehensible, and his ability to teach from a neutral standpoint is very respectable. Highly recommend. Many thanks! R.D.
Grades were only based of five test, and his feedback was basically " just get better". So you almost never knew what he expects for a good answer.
Way too tough of a grader for an introductory humanities prerequisite course required by the school. I tried so many different approaches to his assignments & put hours into it. Always graded a B or C. This is an introductory class. It was frustrating to try so hard and get no reward. He preaches to students to take humanities why would we want to
"I've taken similar strict classes before and passed with A's. But in this class, you need to be prepared to self-teach. You may still fail, even with effort, time, and different work styles. Philosophy is great, but if your instructor disagrees, it can impact your GPA. I regret not withdrawing." Will not recommend his class.
I'm not sure what the other people who rated this course are talking about. if you follow the instructions and answer the questions as directed (which are mostly NOT opinion based) this class is easy to nail. the hardest part is the sheer amount of reading and writing you have to do, as he is a very generous grader.
I should have listened to the plethora of negative reviews. I don't know how in the world EvCC hasn't fired this guy. His assignment instructions are unclear/missing and he refused to give me further feedback until we "go forward" in the course. If I had continued without feedback, my grade would have dropped beyond saving. DO NOT take his classes.
Puts time limits on tests, leaves no room for improvement if you do poorly on a test or assignment, gives lazy feedback and all of his lectures where made years ago. Harsh grader, unforgiving, does not let you redo under any circumstances, unclear instructions, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! hate this guy! he makes things unnecessarily difficult. 0/10
If you have been looking for any other reason to get therapy for your anger issues then look no further because this guy's class would make even Mother Teresa angry. When it comes to giving helpful feedback this guy is as useful as a screen door on a submarine. when it comes to teaching this guy is the human equivalent of a participation award.
Honestly, my 1998 Toyota Corolla works harder than this teacher, and I sold it for scrap metal 2 years ago. I don't know how to describe how frustrating this teacher's class is without cursing. I would literally rather be a woman during the witch trials than take this teacher's class again. EVCC needs to fire teachers who get a lot of bad reviews.
He does not do a single thing for this class. It takes him a week to grade my work and all of his "lecture" videos are pre-recorded from 2020 or before. You are required to read a chapter out of the textbook with little to no guide every week. He puts trick questions in his quizzes and does not accept late work. EVCC needs to find a diff phil prof
There is not much engagement due to the course being completely online. Many if not all of the provided material are recycled lectures from years ago.The class is easy if you have time to read all the material, despite the fact that VanQuickenborne is not the best instructor. If you enjoy working independently, you will enjoy his courses.
Worst professor I have ever had
Mike is one of my favorite professors, his online class is well organized and easy to understand while he himself is a very colorful and entertaining teacher. It's clear that he is very passionate about the subject matter. I plan to take PHIL&120 - Symbolic Logic with him this coming fall :)
this is the most painful class. it's torture i wish there was a way to warn everyone to NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. he needs to be fired or something. uses the same material for the last 5+ years + is the laziest grader ever. He asked us to email him if we were going to read his comments, and if he didn't have an email from you, you don't get comments.
DO NOT TAKE. HE NEEDS FIRED. i read these to know im not alone. HE SHOULD NOT BE GETTING PAID TO USE LECTURES FROM 2014. HE DOESNT DO ANUTHING. ITS IMPOSSIBLE TO GET AN A.
just don't. save yourself.
Horrible teacher. he is incredibly bias and only grades off of opinion. DO NOT TAKE
Unclear grading system... He will mark off points without telling you what you missed. If you want to know you have to email him directly which gets annoying after every assignment. So a pretty lazy grader. His lectures are boring but he can be funny sometimes. If you can help it, don't take his class.
EASY if you're good at SELF DISCIPLINE/ SELF STUDYING. Grade depends on 4 exams, so I skipped around textbook work problems and only worked on ones I needed practice on. Fast responses but doesn't go out of his way to help you.. & isn't very helpful.. I skipped the textbook- just lectures, work problems & PRACTICE EXAMS (identical to real exams)!
Absolutely awful professor. Prerecorded lectures from 2014 and that's it, no communication at all, literally unreachable. He grades entirely based on opinion. I would go into paragraphs to answer a simple question at one point and it was still somehow wrong and if you wanted to know what was wrong, you had to email him but he would not respond.
It's mostly about self discipline. The assignments take around 2-3 hours, and there's three every two weeks. It's easy but time consuming. They require a lot of thought outside of the basics. Don't take if you can't handle multiple big assignments or have trouble articulating your thoughts and putting them on paper.
This has been by far the worst online class I have ever taken. The grade is determined by only tests and very few other thing outside of it. The teacher himself doesn't go out of his way to help at all, even when contacted.
Do not take, you will read too much, to write too much, just to get a zero because you didn't reference your quotes. He just recycles old lectures on recordings, uses youtube videos and grades on opinions, not your writing. Doesn't communicate well and there is no such thing as late work, just an automatic zero
Philosophy can be confusing, if your strength is not in inference, this class might be challenging. Yes, video lectures are recycled but Mike is available to respond to questions and gives clear instructions about assignments. Quizzes are open book and usually have videos or lectures to support the material. Study and you'll be fine.
It's really hard to grade him as a teacher when he does not teach. All lectures are pre-recorded from the mid-2010's with a 50/50 chance they even work. Emailed questions are quick to be answered but are wordy logic problems in themselves. I can not attribute my A to anything he taught, the class is a textbook, nothing more nothing less.
full of himself and there to show the student how smart he is. This is lecturer that believes failing students show off how smart he is. Miss 1/10 and you get 0. If you have to take phil try dfrnt college. It's high time such lecturers should be reported to the dean or dpt in charge.rvws seems to fall on some deaf ears
Good teacher who knows his subject matter well. Expectations are very clear. There are a wide variety of materials, from movies to personally recorded lectures to profound philosophical readings. Get ready to learn amazing things.
His late work policy is "it's not allowed because in a real career you won't be given flexible deadlines, and anyways the class is online". Reached out for an extension because of my depression and was denied. If you have anything in your life that might prevent you from constant studying (likely, it's community college) don't take this professor.
Class is graded on few assignments, if you miss one it's almost impossible to get back. He grades based on pure emotion and his own views. The textbook is overpriced, especially when it's free online. Every lecture is pre-recorded from years ago, and many assignments are trying to relate what he said years ago to the present. You teach yourself.
His work is tough and over the top for a 100-course. His work has not been updated since COVID, and his outside lectures are distracting.
Zero late work accepted under any circumstances. I had something out of my control cause me to be a few days late, and the assignment was big and made the difference between acceptable and having to retake the class. Had to drop it and waste my money and push back my graduation. 0 of 10, would not recommend.
He gives you 2 fairly large writing assignments every two weeks, and despite the strict late policy, it's two whole weeks to work on them. Once done, you don't have to do anything else. For the assignment, read the chapter, watch the corresponding lecture, then answer the question, and then repeat for next chapter. Book can be hard to understand.
