not too good of a teacher but you can make it fun if you're friends with him... just act interested and you'll do straight, ta ta ti ti ta
No Comments
He is such a freakin spaz! He pauses for long periods of time while lecturing and then doesn't return to the same subject. He is no help at all when it comes to having problems in the class.
very boring & pretty spacy. will try to help you but often fails. however, he gives you an outline of the test so it's a pretty easy "A".
This dude is HORRIBLE...I hated his class! he is way to hard to be a intro class...he thinks it's piano play time for him and show off how good he is...tests are hard and does not explain things clearly...takes attendance so you better go. TA TA TI TI TA!! TAKE SOMEONE ELSE!!!
Well, Mr. Waddell is not so bad, I guess its an ok class. He does take attendance so make sure you go to class and act interested and you'll do alright. He seems to be a pretty nice guy, but he can make things more confusing than they have to be. If you need help read the book or ask someone else
Professor Waddell is a nice guy, but he sucks at teaching. If you do not have any musical history then do not take this class because you will be lost.
Mr. Waddell is a nice man and is willing to help you if you fall behind. However, he often doesn't do much for the people who are really lost. You have to make an effort to get to know him. I wouldn't suggest him if you have no prior musical training.
He's a happenin' dude!

He's A-okay!
OMG, I know how to read sheet music AND I took this class I did great! I'm so happy I'm not a moron!
This is the most annoying class i've ever had to sit through in my entire life. He's a nice guy he's just extremely monotone and booooring.
Yuck, please no one take this class he was terrible.
Incredibly boring class. If you don't have music training do NOT take this one with Mr. Waddell. He doesn't seem to notice that most of us don't know what he's talking about half the time and he's incredibly boring. Tests are WAY to hard for this class!
Really boring and unclear, assumed everyone had musical training even after we told him a lot of us didnt. He doesn't know how to answer questions or help; you can tell he knows his stuff but is one of those people that shouldn't be a teacher. I guess he is nice, although strange, but his personality wont help you pass the class.
Not very good at explaining concepts to students. Tests are very easy and relatively few homework assignments. If you already have music experience, this class is a waste of your time.
horrible attitude not effective in teaching
Do NOT take him if you havn't had any prior music!! He is not willing to help if you are lost in class. He spaces out often and talks about things completely off subject. Cusses at students when mad. Strict attendance, counts funerals, etc as unexcused. A Horrible little man!!
An interesting class. Tests are fair if you study the notes and read the book.
uh can some1 please say pilsbury doughboy?? haha THIS CLASS WAS RIDICULOUS... everyone hated it... i listen to music all the time and used to play an instrument.. and this class made me lose appreciation for music... whatever u do dont take it!
He means well. Most of the time he's really chipper! He explains music using analogies..paint, food, color...kind of weird, but interesting. His tests are pretty easy IF you study;but, be meticulous about checking everything. I made a 98, 99, 100, and a 94 on the final. I did have some previous music classes. I wouldn't recommend if no experienc
Good guy, cares alot about the subject, not hard if you study some. I had a little experiance in middle school
Very Very hard class, i played music all throughout highschool, and i understook nothing, hes a very smart, and musically gifted guy but does not explain anything well at all, all that i learned was from other people in the class, takes role every day, and must have book. do not take this class!!!!
BORING, but easy
HARD CLASS. He makes the class way harder than it needs to be. Not good at explaining things. Be prepared for a hard boaring class
EASY class. attendance is not required. no quizzes just tests and 2 EASY papers. he gives study guides before tests and the tests come straight from there. class is boring but easy. i've got a 96 and 100 on both tests so far with studying the night before.
Very boring class. The tests are pretty easy if you go to class and take the notes (if you skip this class a lot like I did than make sure to find someone who takes VERY thorough notes). The first test was a joke, but the last two sucked because you had to memorize certain songs belonging to the composers, which is hard to do if you skipped class.
Class is REALLY boring and attendance isn't mandatory so it makes it really hard to go to class. But I learned the hard way that going to class is pretty crucial because the tests are all fill in the blank without a word bank. He gives a study guide though. Waddell is ok, just boring. And don't get caught sleeping he WILL call you out!
Class is SOOOOO BORING. It's not required to go, but if you want to pass his tests you have to go because they're all from his notes. I didn't buy the book and went to class every time and took notes and got an A. It's just death sitting there for an hour and a half listening to him talk. He's very talented and knows his music but it is so boring
Class is SOO boring. Like 4 tests. Comes from notes. Doesn't take attendance because large class. Must go to 4 concerts and write 1 pg paper on them (not bad, go to free ones with GUITAR).Take good notes. Dont need textbook. If you put off studying until last minute, associate names of composers and what they did with things, thats how I passed
This class is pretty boring but also very easy..I got and A and didnt even purchase the book..take good notes and you'll do fine on the tests..usually writes the notes on an overhead projector so they're easy to copy..professor waddell is kind of unorganized at times but means well..recommend if you're looking for an easy A in a basic studies
Very boring class. easy to skip because of large class no attendance. but if you skip make sure you get the notes because thats where all the tests come from. easy class as long as you go to class.
Mr. Waddell is a really nice guy with a great passion for music. Unfortunately many people don't take this class seriously. Anyway, he explains things well, but there is a lot of memorizing terms, especially for the 1st test. The class really is not too hard, you just have to attend class, take good notes, and study your notes.
He is a really nice guy and very passionate. If you don't have a background in music I don't suggest taking him. I had some background but basically ended up teaching myself out of the book and workbook. Go to class to get notes.
So nice and knows a lot about music. He will play different instruments to help you understand what he is talking about. Class can get boring but it's not terrible. Tests are straight forward but there's a lot of information so you need to study.
wow, why did I take this class. If you're looking for a basic studies, do not take him!!! It is literally horrible. I knew it'd be boring but it's not even an easy class! I have a better grade in calculus and bio than this useless class. His tests are HARD for what it is. The whole class is pretty much failing and he doesn't offer any extra credit.
not a nice guy, hard class, realy boring, bad tests, do not take any classes with him
I can't understand why people are saying this class is hard.. I loved this class! All you do is watch youtube and listen to music! Only 4 tests & he tells you exactly what's going to be on them.. It's an easy A & he is a really sweet guy!
I would not recommend this class. Waddell is very knowledgable on the material he teaches, but the class goes by extremely slow and is very boring. His tests are hard and is never clear on what's going to be on them. If you like taking notes, take this class, that's all it's really about.
He is a great guy, very excited about the material he is teaching, BUT the class is insanely hard. There are four tests, no hw, and no extra credit. Like I said he is a great guy but if you are looking just to fill your basic studies requirement take something else.
do not take his class!! you show up and take notes the whole class. but then when it come to the test he does not tell you what is important. i filled a whole notebook for this class and still didnt do great. i took this for a basic studys class but i should have droped it when i still had the chance
I loved his class and I loved Mr.Waddell. Everyone else is crazy. You come to class take notes and watch youtube videos. You should enjoy music if you're going to take this class. But he loves what he teaches and is very helpful and a really nice guy. There are only 4 tests and he sends you study guides, study your notes and your set. Easy A.
It may seem like I gave him a low rating, but I really don't mean to be harsh. He is an incredibly nice and extremely talented individual, but he is just not the best teacher. He can be a little scattered and unorganized, but he really is one of the nicest professors in the department. And one of the best players.
He's really a good professor! He loves what he does and it's obvious. You can't be closed minded going into the course, but if you attend the classes, take notes, ask questions, and fill out the study guide, you will make a good grade. If you put a little effort into the class you will get an A!
So glad I took this class and loved Professor Waddell! I liked jazz more before but know so much more about the music have started listening to many of the artists we learn about in class. Waddell is super nice and very clear about what's on the test. You can tell how much he enjoys teaching the material.
Great guy. Other teacher got fired and he took over. Willing to help you as much as possible. Just an overall great dude.
Mr. Waddell is extremely passionate about what he does.. His notes come straight from a word document. Sometimes it gets hard to pay attention in his class but overall it isn't too bad. Just keep up with the notes and the study guide will be all that you need for tests and the non-cumulative exam.
Do not take this class! Not an easy A like I expected. All you do is take tonsss of notes and then try to memorize everything for the test because he doesn't tell you what is important. He is a sweety but not a good teacher. Do not have your phone out because there are serious consequences for that as I have come to learn. P.S. DONT TAKE THIS CLASS
Mike Waddell is a very nice guy and loves music but there has got to be better classes under this course requirement. I would not recommend this class it was awfully boing and test were hard. There are much easier fun classes that you can get an A in.
Do not take Mike Waddell! He is a semi nice guy but not a good teacher and has no clue how to work a computer or microsoft word. We spend half the class waiting on him to figure it out and the other half of ridiculously boring notes and bad music. The test are hard and for a basic studies class this is awful and mike waddell does not make it easier
Waddell is perhaps the sweetest professor you could have at UNCW. It is a large class so there isn’t any participation. If you can attend class, take notes, and memorize a few musicians and their works—this class will be a piece of cake. A great choice to grab an A for basic studies requirement. Promise!! No textbook, no fuss. Take Waddell!
Very nice professor! Very easy class as long as you do the study guide and pay attention to his lectures. There are only four tests and they are very easy. The only outside of class work is you have to attend two concerts and write a page response on it. Tests also have listening portions for classical music selections on two of the tests.
I wouldn't even think of taking him again. He's hard to follow and he can't remember what he's talking about half the time. It's hard to tell what is going to be on tests since his lectures are super scattered. If you work hard and study a lot you can pass, but I'd say it isn't worth it. He's nice, but he makes jazz a little too complicated.
While his class is pretty lecture-heavy, and he goes off on random tangents all the time, as long as you take good notes and know the music it's an easy class to pass. Every test has a study guide that is essentially the test, and he'll give extra credit on the tests for knowing extra band members. Easy A if you do the study guides.
Mr. Waddell is arguably the nicest teacher in the school, but the class itself is pretty boring. Lectures are always pretty boring, 4 tests, attendance mandatory. Easy A if you try a little. Which is hard.
Prof Waddell was a good teacher and a nice guy. He gives study guides before every test, and they're pretty much the answers depending on content. He does not post his powerpoint so attendance is pretty necessary to pass the tests unless you get notes. Also, if you do well enough in his class he'll exempt you from the final, so study well.
Seemed at times to be absent-minded, but his MUS 116 class was very easy. Show up, take notes, and listen to the listening examples, and this is an easy A. Waddell is easy to like and while his lectures can be boring sometimes, it's an easy attendance grade because he's just such a nice guy.
Prof Waddell is very compassionate and sweet. He is also very talented and knows a lot about music and jazz. The material itself is not very interesting but as long as you show up and take notes its not bad at all. He always gives study guides or mock tests and the actual test is almost identical.
Prof. Waddell is the sweetest teacher at UNCW. He loves what he teaches and makes sure that his students are happy. He even spices class up to make things really jazzy when he plays instruments. Easy, simply class. Study guides are on quizlet. No text book used.
Dr. Waddell is a very kind and caring professor, but to be honest, this class was really boring. There are some cool parts depending on your musical interests, but overall I did not enjoy going to this class. Final grade is based only off four exams but they are really easy if you take notes in class and look at the study guides.
Waddell is all over the place. Notes are random and go in no order. Class is literally just notes and music videos or him playing an instrument. Only grades are 4 tests. No technology in class can only use paper. Highly do not recommend if you are looking for a easy and enjoyable class.
This class is boring but if you show up to class and take the notes, you will be fine. The tests are 100% memorization.
Mr. Waddell was very friendly and it was fascinating to listen to his lectures His knowledge of music and jazz history was immense. I learned an incredible amount in his course and his passion for the subject was quite clear. The best part of his class is when he brings in his instruments and plays what we are learning. Cant recommend highly enough
He is a fine Professor. Mandatory lectures, four test a semester. Basically memorize the lecture material and you will do fine on the test. His class is a little boring if you aren't into jazz but it was bearable. You can tell he really cares about what he is teaching. Overall not that bad.
Professor Waddell only gives 4 test including the final exam that makes up your grade which means that each test count 25%. Offers no extra credit and no assignments. So basically if you do bad on one exam you're screwed.
Very caring and kind. The grade is based off four tests which is kind of hard but he gives very helpful study guides. His tests are straightforward so you either know it or you don't. Very helpful if you reach out to him. I enjoyed his class. I liked him a lot.
No technology is allowed in the classroom, unable to use laptop to take notes. Doesn't provide missed material for excused absences, provides mock exams but never supplies the answers, doesn't allow for any extra credit, he struggles to use technology/
Mr. Waddell made me love jazz! You can tell that he loves this genre and it's infectious. He expects you to be there, but it's worth it because he'll sometimes play an instrument for you! You spend chunks of the class listening to songs, but mostly writing notes. You don't need the textbook and there were only 4 tests the whole semester.
He is a great person, however an iffy teacher. I am not a fan of only 4 test determining our entire grade, however the material was not too difficult the only way we learned was from a heavy lecture every class period.
Waddell is a great professor and I honestly wish I could have him again. Heading into this class I was originally not very excited, but he is very passionate and has funny anecdotes to go along with the musicians we talk about. I took Jazz History and it was my easiest class, just make flash cards from the study guide and you'll get an A.
Professor Waddell is an amazing professor. Going into his class, I didn't have much interest in the topic matter, but throughout the semester he has cultivated my interest in it. He actively works to keep his students involved and you can tell he cares. He is very caring and works to know every student. I highly recommend taking his courses.
Lectures are very boring but he really does care about jazz. He had his favorites in class and made it obvious but besides that he's a nice guy. I think we had 3 or 4 exams. You have to study for them though or you won't pass; there is no "winging" one of his exams.
Mike was an amazing professor! He is truly passionate about jazz and has a story for many of the musicians talked about in this course. The class is very notes heavy! He will sometimes play piano or saxophone to reinforce an idea. The only grades are 4 tests throughout the semester, but has an opportunity for 30 points extra on the final class.
This class was not difficult in any sense, the notes and lectures were just continuous and I did not learn a thing. Waddell is not a hard grader but because there are only 4 assignments for an entire semester you just have to do good on the tests. Got a 74 on one test and grade has still not recovered. thumbs down..
Very good professor if you are into jazz and like learning about it. It's only graded by 4 exams the entire semester (including your final) so you do have to do very well on it. An extra credit listening quiz is given on LDOC and it won't hurt your grade, only raise it.
He's a sweet guy, but this class made me want to pull my hair out. You HAVE to study for the tests because you only get four grades the whole semester. All the people we learn about play the same three instruments and have similar backstories, so it's hard to differentiate between them on exams. Attendance is mandatory. There's extra credit though.
I am a biochem major and this class required more work than some of my chem classes. Only way to get test material is to go to class. You have to memorize a bunch of stuff that doesnt matter in order to pass. Everything he talks about is forgettable and sounds the same. Everyone composer went to jail at some point and was addicted to some drug
There are 4 grades the whole semester.
Professor is very nice but is awful at teaching. Boring lectures and not so helpful study guides.
While there isn't free grades and the whole grade for the class is based on tests it still is fun. Listen to a lot of great music and hear a lot of funny jokes
A very sweet Professor, he doesn't post notes at all, but you can always ask for pictures of the slides. He posts practice quizzes before every test that prepare you very well for every test, and they are easy to study in Quizlet. No prior music knowledge is necessary; it's a lot of memorizing, but it's easy if you go to class
Super sweet older man, goes through slides in class and won't post them, but is fine with taking pictures of slides/getting them from classmates. 4 tests the whole semester, multiple choice + an easy listening section. Would recommend it if you're remotely decent at memorizing, since most of the questions are easy to recognize on the test.
This professor was great! The tests were very straightforward if you just study the notes he gives. The course is graded by all tests but they were easy. Better than doing homework. Would take this class again.
