easy class, so long as you've read the material.
I took him online and in person. IMHO, his online is a little better. He likes english and has a good sense of humor. a medium amount of reading, a few papers.
nice guy
he gives those papers.
Gives out like 6 papers...and ...just..whack. Go take mrs fischer..more animated and doesen't crack dumbass jokes.
Took Mike for a classroom Eng102 and an internet 242 (American Lit). He's absolutely clear in his expectations, and makes you work for your grade, but made it really enjoyable. He's funny in person, and was always willing to help any student who wanted help. He treats his students like adults, and our class had a great time. Highly recommended.

Really nice guy, really helpful if you wanted help, I learned a lot and even had fun. I found myself totally prepared for English 102 after taking his class, way more so than most of my 102 class. If you want to learn something, he's the guy to take.
assigns 1 topic to write on for whole semester that he must approve, and after HE approves it, if you run out of material (it can happen, i did) he says too bad and fails you....if HE said ok, and you run out of material, aren't you both at fault?....not a good teacher when it comes to owning up to his own mistakes, places all blame on others, accountability is important to have when it comes to instructors
Only been in the class for two weeks, but love it. He's cool and funny. Yes, he hands out FIVE papers on day 1, but this way I know exactly what they are from day 1. No surprises and I can work ahead if I want. I appreciated those dumbass jokes too. At least he doesn't just drone on and on like some.
Great teacher, explains the material very well.
Very unorganized and required every student to write 5 papers on the same subject. I mean what the really is there to talk about on one subject for 5 papers. Also, he needs to go back to school and learn how to grade papers properly and not mark off errors that are actually correct. I advise others to avoid this awful teacher.
man, there are some whiners and idiots here. i took mike's class fall 2005. he's probably the most organized professor i've ever had. just because you failed doesn't mean he 'should go back to school.' i thought it was a great class; mike's a nice guy and made a class i didn't want to take pretty interesting. i'll be taking his Eng 102 class.
Great Teacher. Laid back and funny!
Very Easy
Great teacher, laid back. Lots of material but if you do all of the reading you should be fine.
Hey man i know this is CCSN but you got to expect to do a little work. if you did work in high school then you wouldn't be at CCSN...haha but White is great...i don't consider his homework actual homework because it's all based on essays and his main focus is on essays...look every english class at CCSN will give u aobut 5-6 essays to do
A lots of studying and homework, and many assignments for essay. I feel lost my life but learn not thing! If you take online class you will get lost easy because he makes the law is not easy to fallow.
AWESOME, took online 8 week course. This professor is willing to help in any way, makes sure his students succeed. recommend highly, one of the best professors at CCSN!
Took Mike's 101 online in the fall of 2006. It's a great class. Mike responds to emails super fast and makes all of the requirements really clear. He also made the class nicer by having a great sense of humor. I'd recommend this class to everyone.
we really liked him. he was very helpful if you had any questions. He always responds to your e-mails within the same day.take him he isn't that hard he only has 5 essays throughout the entire semester on the same topic. easy pass class if you show up and show effort.
Took this class online and was one of my favorites! Very easy class. Very little homework out of the book. Alot of research though for different papers. Would definitely take this professor again!
He was NEVER boring. he's always cheerful and funny. The class was pretty easy and straight forward. He provides very clear directions in what he wants and doesnt want to see in our essays. Over all I think he really knows what he teaches, plus he's fun and crazy lol.
I took Mike's eng 101 class online during the summer. He seems nice and the class is pretty easy. You need the book to do some of the homework (which can be finished in a day if you wanted). Make sure you turn things in on time!! Usually things are due by NOON, not midnight, on the due date. I would definitely take one of his classes again
Great sense of humor. His instructions are crystal clear. My only problem was keeping up with the due dates. Things were due at Noon on a couple of different days each week. It was very hard for me to keep track of considering my other classes and work schedule.
Bad teacher look for somone else.
just finished his 4 week class and loved it. hard, yes, but it WAS a 4 week class. super clear directions, answered any questions you had, good sense of humor, got our papers back really quick. i'd recommend his class to anyone but lazy stupid people.
This professor was awsome. He was very entertaining in a mean and happy way. He made us create 1 thesis for the entire semester in Eng 101 and i passed with a A. All you have to do is keep up with the due dates (he gives you almost two weeks to do a five page paper sometiems)
not a fair grade , judges people for who they are and not what they write
HE IS VERY SARCASTIC! but super funny
i took his online course and it sucked cuz he doesn't give you your grade on hw submitted which was around 20% of your grade...so you don't know if you're doing good or not...take k.pearson cuz you'll really learn how to write a 1 1/2 page paper vs his 5-10 page papers!!
I think the comments say it all. If you are lazy and can't write, take the class that only requires 1 1/2 page papers. If you are interested in an education, take Prof White; if you want to remain stupid like the last two commentators, do nothing, and get a meaningless A, take someone else.
Mike was hilarious.. I highly reccomend his class. I always wanted to attend. You write 5 essays throughout the semester with a few homework assignments. He always made class entertaining.. helps you with papers. TAKE HIS CLASS.
Though professor white is funny, his class sucks. You write 5 papers about the same topic and he is useless. The person that said judges people not what they write has it right. Grades heavily on the MLA format so if you aren't perfect with it, plan on doing horrible.
Wiseguy who does not care if you are with the DRC, the disability resource center. Non-helpful, plus you do not get to know your grade til after you can withdraw. Save yourself the hassle, pick someone else. Nasty one, even in person.
Loved his Eng101 class on campus. He makes you work for your grade, not an easy A, but that's what college is about people. I went to his office hours almost every week and he was always cheerful and gave me whatever help I asked for and answered all my questions. Great class and great professor!
Not a very helpful or nice guy. He gave me a zero on an assignment worth 10% of my grade because one of my three peer edits accidentally didn't post in time. No sense of leniency or compassion whatsoever, and clearly gets off on giving out bad grades. Avoid the aggravation and pick someone else.
Light-hearted and easy going. You have to have pre-existing writing skills or you may struggle. He doesn't teach HOW to write. However, his method of having you write on the same topic for the entire semester helps to improve skills. I like how you work up to your term paper. It's a great method to learn how to write them. Highly recommend him!
Prof. Mike was great. He always told you exactly what he expected and gave you all the tools necessary to get the job done. He was very quick to respond questions and with grades. Two rules... Don't plagiarize and do your work, you will do well. Oh, and he is pretty funny too! I would recommend him to anyone who values and honest education.
Horrible, likes to judge people and discriminate because of what they write dont take his class.
I honestly can't believe what I'm reading so I'll just give my opinion. I found the class to be an outstanding experience. I liked the structure of the papers, I liked the setup of the class, and Professor White was professional and helpful to me in EVERY way. I would recommend this professor to my friends.
Took the online class, it was pointless because you were learning about middle school things in your homework. Very hard to hear back from him especially when its an emergency about your grades. He also graded papers way to hard, more in what he thought was best and never let you fix them up or explain better what he wanted...
Excellent class, excellent professor. I've taken 3 other online classes and this is the only professor to actually email me back in 24 hours and also actually grade my work and not just send back a grade and no comment. Learned alot, highly recommended.
If you are willing to do the work, read the book and website, and ask questions, you'll do fine. If you aren't, you're going to die. Nice professor, will comment heavily on your papers, both good and bad, and will offer any help you want, if you ask. I'll be taking his 232 class this fall. Great class.
pretty cool teacher. he made me laugh at times. the class wasnt that hard. if you know how to write, you'll do just fine. dont get on his bad side though
Really nice, funny guy. So long as you do the reading and show up for class, you'll be fine. He has about 3 in-class writing assignments and does a couple classroom activities. The core assignment is writing a research paper. You write 5 research papers total and give a presentation/speech on the subject during the last few days of class.
I took his 102 class waaaaay back in '04. Good guy, good instructor. Very clear on all his assignments and is willing to help you whenever he can.
He's funny
Everyone complaining about his lack of compassion concerning due dates are just too lazy to read the syllabus. I had ample time to complete all assignments. He emailed me back within 24 hours every time and was willing to clear up any questions I had. He doesn't hold your hand but that isn't what I was looking for.
Very challenging.
I really enjoyed this professor's online English 101 class. He clearly holds to high standards and expects students to work. He was really helpful on my papers, offering many comments and suggestions. I've never had a teacher at any level offer that kind of detailed response to any writing I did. Great class, but not for slackers.
Very hard class, but if you do the homework and really pay attention you'll do okay. Get on his bad side or pick a topic he doesn't agree with, don't expect to get a good grade. If you are a hard worker and like to write White's is the class for you. Not that great in English and need some extra help he is not the right professor for you.
"I got a bad grade cuz he didn't like my topic" + "don't get on his bad side" = I didn't do the required work and need someone else to blame. No decent student who's had this prof could ever fault his willingness to help and crystal clear directions. Some of these people need to grow up. Treats you like an adult so if you're not one, stay away.
Really enjoyed this class! The professor has a great sense of humor! Just be sure to brush up on your essay writing skills because essays are a significant part of your grade. I highly recommend this professor! :)
Great class, will make you work for your grade, but treated everyone in my class fairly from what I saw. If you don't come to class or don't do the readings, expect to fail, but who would expect otherwise? I feel very prepared for English 102 and any college writing I will have to do. If you just want an easy grade, wrong prof for you.
Very strict about deadlines but the deadlines are all laid out from day one. Very willing to help out anyone who asks for help. I don't suggest you take him if you can't follow deadlines. 5 essays expected over the semester most with at least two weeks given to complete it.
I didn't care for the class. I don't like teachers who say "Write as much as you see fit" as their essay requirements and then hit you for not being long enough. Other than that, he's good.
You mess up one one thing and he'll give u D or lower. Not clear on midterms or finals. Other students read and correct your rough draft. If the student is wrong then your essay will be wrong. Took online.
Don't take this teacher!! stay away. Worse teacher of my college career.
this class is a joke... trust me... if you are top level English major i would say maybe... if not DONT TAKE IT..
I have taken this professor for three semesters, and he's awesome. I really can't believe some of the things posted here. In my experience, the classes have been excellent, and the instructor has been the best I've had at CSN.
Loved this class! The professor was super helpful, and always willing to help me during office hours. I don't understand the negative comments. I learned alot and feel totally prepared for future classes where I'll need to write a paper. Don't believe the negative reviews!!!
Don't believe the haters, it was an awesome class with an awesome prof. I have already recommended it to friends. You read, write journals, and take three tests. It's not hard.
THIS GUY IS A JOKE. STAY AWAY FROM HIS CLASS. HAS SAME RUBIC FOR EACH TEST, BUT GRADING CHANGES. WORST CLASS OF MY COLLEGE CAREER. NO CLEAR EXPECTATIONS. DOES NOT RESPOND TO EMAILS
Up until this class, I have always done exceptionally well in English throughout Jr. High, high school and 3 semesters of college. I followed direction and would still recieve the same grade. Wish I never took this class. Not a fun class or easy by any means. I am surprised at some of the positive remarks and wonder who's class they were taking?
Best online class I've taken at CSN by far. Clear expectations and standards, excellent communication with students, responds within a few hours to emails and questions, and makes the class interesting. There is no doubt in my mind that the complainers simply didn't do the work. I did mine, and had no trouble at all. Highly recommended!
good professor . very laid back and a funny guy. papers are easy if you pick a good topic for his 5 paper same topic outline
His online course was very convenient. All his requirements are completely spelled out. Read the assignments, fully answer all questions, and use your answers for your papers.
Excellent class all around. I have recommended this professor to my friends. Class is easy if you can follow directions. Very helpful, nice prof.
Professor White is great! He grades fairly. He responds to questions and emails quickly. Has a great sense of humor and his feedback is genuinely kind.He is strict on using MLA formatting. He is laid back and his approach of picking one topic to write about during the entire semester was awesome. I highly recommend this Professor!
Very strict with whatever the computer says. 4 out of 5 essays will require 3 things: peer edit draft, peer editing others, and turning in your actual paper. If you are late by literally 1 second of submitting any of one (say, from 11:59pm to 12:00:00am), you will undoubtedly get your deserved zero for EVERYthing. Do things in a timely manner
If you want clarity & feedback look elsewhere. He has students edit 1st drafts, what use is that if they don't know what the're doing? He's MLA crazy, that's all I learned. 4 papers & a final on the same topic, it's like beating a dead horse. I honestly would'nt take him again. Pro replies quickly to emails. You'll pass but won't learn anything.
I really enjoyed this class. The prof gave crystal clear directions and expectations, and the readings were not lengthy (10-30 pages a week - one novel toward the end). Journals were given (and all available on day 1). Trust me, it's not that hard. The haters are just lazy. Boo Hoo people, it's college. Grow up.
One of the best professors I've had thus far. Text book use was minimal, had to read a few poems and short stories, but nothing too much. He is heavy on the MLA, but for a good reason. He keeps all the classes interesting, and won't waste your time. Almost always available for help. YOU WILL GET OUT OF THIS CLASS WHAT YOU PUT IN. Show up, and write
The class was really enjoyable. I had not expected to enjoy reading 'old' literature, but the prof picked some great stuff. Four essay tests with 2-3 questions each and weekly journals. You can work ahead as far as you want. You get a week to work on each test so it's pretty easy. I have recommend prof white to several people.
I took professor White's online 4 week english class during summer. At first, I was worried because it was my first online class. Professor White is an ideal online professor to have. He tells you everything you need in order to succeed in the course. Just follow everything he wants/requires in the course, and you will receive a good grade!
Mike has helped me improve my writing skills ten fold and made the class fun by introducing english concepts into main stream media.
This guy will make you feel like a useless idiot the moment you screw up in class. Funny, but honestly can be an cruel guy when he wants to be.
Professor White was extremely helpful with any questions I had.
This class was a great one! Actually surprised I enjoyed old lit. reading! Professor White gives you all the discussions and readings ahead of time so you can work as far ahead as you'd like. He's very helpful, and the readings aren't long at all (30-100 pages)including poems and short stories. I would definitely recommend this class to everyone!
LOVED this class. I have never had to read much literature, so it was all new to me. I thought a lot of old books would be boring, but they were really interesting. The prof picked the good stuff. Three tests, a final exam, and weekly journals and responses. Clear directions, answers emails and grades tests very quickly. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
Really nice teacher, and an easy/fun class. You only have to write 5 essays for the whole course. The best part is that you can choose your own topic :) We hardly used textbooks and homeworks were pretty easy. Midterm/Finals werent bad at all if you paid attention in class.
This man likes to mess with you if you do not write about something that he wants to hear about. His course content folder is a mess and you need to be careful when you submit your work for his class. This was an awful course to take.
Very difficult
good teacher
Might be a great professor in class, online=ehh. He grades papers based on grammar and MLA-format, not how well your paper itself was written. All I get are B's because 1 or 2 misplaced commas and incorrect "works cited" format. I think at a college level papers should be graded on level of understanding. This guy should be teaching high school.
His class is easy if you have perfect punctuation and writing. The weekly assignments are easy full credit for completion. The three essays and final exam however are graded strictly on MLA format and grammar/punctuation. Each error is 1-3 points off total grade for assignment out of 100. It's Literature not a writing class! Would NOT RECOMMENDED!
He's a cool professor and the work is interesting. But he's a strict grader. Weekly disscussions are worth only a few points so in order to get a decent grade your test will need to get you there. Basically it's the tests that matter.
This is a wonderful professor. He is very fair and will get you prepared for future college papers.
Prof. White is easily one of my favorite teachers. He is really approachable, cool, funny and quick to answer any questions. Btw: ASK HIM QUESTIONS! Seriously, he loves it and will help you in every way possible! He wants you to succeed!!! Be active, pay attention and be vocal and you will get an A! (PS: watch for Easter eggs in the syllabus!)
This class was pretty awesome for english 101. Basically you write a paper on the same topic 5 times but you improve over time. I'd suggest anyone to take this class for good feedback. Lectures aren't long and if you ever complete the lecture early or do whatever was assigned for that day you can leave
There is obviously a lot of reading in this class, but I found it really interesting. It is great to read and analyze different short stories, essays, etc. There are weekly discussions, three tests and a final in MLA format. I did good, but this is not a "skate" through class. Time manage and you will be fine. Rent from Amazon, cheaper then CSN
Mr. Mike is a very cool teacher! He always gives feedback on assignments quickly and is always willing to help his students. His lectures are very specific, and if we were done early we could leave class. He has a good sense of humor and makes class pretty fun. Definitely recommend him.
Professor White is, by far, the best English teacher I have ever had. I hate writing, but he made this class so easy for me. Good grader. He's not like those teachers who grade your essay and not tell you what you did wrong; he actually points out your mistakes. He's also very active on canvas; when you ask him a question he responds right away.
This has been by far the worst professor I have ever dealt with. Will not work with students even if you have the best grades in class! Very arrogant and simply doesn't care about his students. If taking his class read everything very carefully and look for hidden posts about assignments because he will not explain anything.
This class is focused on grammar and format. All of the papers are based on one topic of your choice. Mike grades on your ability to follow MLA format. It is an easy class as long as you do the work.
I took the summer class: 4 weeks. There is one paper a week. Mike grades on grammar and format, so it is an easy A if you know how properly write. There is also one homework assignment a week that can be done in an hour. As long as you do the work promptly, the class is simple.
I didn't even have to take this class (passed AP Lang exam) but I found out too late to withdraw. This class was easier than any English class I took in high school. Only 5 papers, a midterm, and several homework assignments. Just try your best and follow directions, and you'll be fine. Look out for Easter eggs to earn extra credit!
Very clear on his directions and what exactly he looks for when he grades. As long as you know how to right a decent paper this class is a piece of cake. Assignments are reasonable in length. Only thing I did not like was when I got my essay back he did not put any comments as to why I got the grade that I did.
Well, if you're looking for a challenge then he's the one. Very few assignments overall, but he's a tough grader. Usually, other professors are more lenient when it comes to grading. Especially if it's at least done in the correct format, meets word count requirements, relates to the topic and turned in! BUT for him, that's just not good enough lol
I have taken Eng 101 passed with flying colors. MLA was always fine in all other classes. Apparently this teacher is extreme in MLA, dont forget to capitalize or commas. Paper Detail grading is so strict, doesn't miss one period. Definitely find a different teacher for this class. He is Extreme.
He is fairly clear on what he wants out of you and goes by his syllabus word for word. No exceptions for late work. There are very few assignments but don't let that fool you. This means that everything you turn in will affect your grade majorly, so do your best! Overall, he is a very tough grader so beware.
He grades only on grammar, which, for me, was horrible and my grade suffered due to it. Take another professor.
Excellent class! Everything is clearly spelled out on the syllabus, so be sure to print it out. Answers emails quickly. Five papers plus homework assignments. He obviously reads every word you write, and expect a lot of comments on your essays. He expects you to improve on each essay, so be sure to review his comments carefully.
He is a tough grader and having the class online did not help
The people complaining probably didn't do the occasional readings (thus failing random pop quizzes) and didn't do well on papers (literally just write a coherent paper!!). Prof was funny and helpful, and the class was easy and made me learn proper MLA usage and other things. Be repsectful and do the work and you'll get a good grade :)
Easily the coolest online class I have ever taken: Golden Age of Science Fiction. The course is clearly set up with clear assignments and due dates. Four tests and weekly journal writings. One to two stories assigned each week. Really cool syllabus and other course materials. Everything graded and returned within 7 days. Fast email responses.
I do not recommend this teacher to anyone. I will never take this class with him again.
Great class with great prof. Five papers and some homework assignments. He expects you to improve with each essay, so be sure to read through his comments. Speaking of which, I have never had a prof offer such great comments on my papers. He's really thorough. Overall, I would highly recommend!
You won't ever be bored in his class. Professor White is quirky and very helpful. The five essays are not difficult becomes it stems off one idea that you write about. There are probably two quizzes he gives you and two exams but they are all pretty easy if you go over the material before hand.
Write good papers, do any readings he wants, etc and you get a good grade. Simple. He gives good feedback and answers any questions you have really fast. Nice, funny prof! Overall, pretty easy class as long as you don't write bad papers and actually do any 'readings'; if he sees that the class doesn't know jack, he might give a pop quiz so be aware
Really Tough grader when it comes to the tests. As long as you do the dicussions well he will grade you pretty easily on those.
Horrible teacher. Extremely tough, will mark you down on every single mistake possible. Not professional, argues with his students, doesn't help, just marks you down. He failed my essay for plagiarism because it was cited incorrectly, not that it wasn't cited, just incorrectly.. I could give him a zero I would, but 1 is the least option available.
He does provide relatively good feedback and is prompt with grading. However he is super specific in terms of MLA formatting so make sure you look over his comments and try your best not to repeat the mistakes again. He will nit pick every fine detail with a comb. Also if he offers additional credit, do it.
Not clear on homework assignment access, and lack of good communtion with assignments and emails. And has a zero tolerance!
Professor White's English 102 course challenged me to become a better writer during the Spring 2016 semester. I thought that I could come into English 102 and write great papers because English 101 was easy. I found out quickly that I had a lot to learn, and I had to seek out the proper way to write my papers in MLA format. Thank you Professor.
I would take another professor. He expects you to be an English scholar writing the essays assigned. Does not go into details as to why you received the grade given.
This was my sixth online class and by far the best. Everything was clearly spelled out, from the syllabus to the tests to the journals. He gave me great feedback on my tests and was really helpful whenever I had questions. Quick with emails and graded work. Read the directions, ask questions, do the work - it's not that hard. Highly recommend
Had him for 101, 102, and 231. Great prof. Great classes. You'll learn a lot. Clear expectations. Clear syllabus. Quick to answer emails and questions. Always willing to help. If you do the work and pay attention it's impossible to fail. Don't do the work, and you won't pass. Strongly recommended for serious students.
Enjoyed the class and learned a lot. Nice guy who offered extra credit, lots of feedback, and answered questions quickly. Take his class.
I was scared to take his class but quite honestly he is great. He's tough on the work but only because he cares. As long you show up and do the essay papers he assigns in the semester you'll be fine. Oh and please do some reading in the text book, pop quizzes is something he does -_- other than that great English professor.
5 papers on the same topic. Mostly grades on grammar than content. He's funny, quirky, easy to approach. Gives good feedback. Stresses MLA format heavily. His extra credits are hidden in his files on canvas so read them thoroughly. Hint: sample papers. Online paper submissions will get their grades faster.
I took Professor White for Eng101, taking him again for 102, and will in the future for 223. He's very clear on what he wants and ultimately wants you to come out of the class liking writing. He's extremely helpful and posts class material online too in case you missed it. Even extra credit is there. I'd take him every English course if I could!
This was the worst English class I've ever taken! He didn't explain anything properly, was a tough grader and never took the time to actually teach. Has "Extra credit" hidden in weird places aka never mentions it anywhere. I would avoid taking this teacher at all costs!
Professor White was always quick to answer e-mails for my papers. He has a very clear syllabus from the beginning, so you'll never be surprised. He always incorporated funny aspects in his presentations so they're never boring. His instructions for essays were very clear and was always available for help. I would 100% retake his class.
Great class! Five papers plus homework. Lots of feedback on each essay. Essay topics were interesting. Clear directions and expectations. Definitely expects you to improve, so don't make the same errors over and over. Highly recommended!
Clear syllabus and what is expected to pass the class. He gives clear feedback on all papers. Other assignments are pretty easy, you will receive full credit for those assignments if you complete them. Read everything in the modules, there are options for extra credit hidden in them. Stay on top of assignments, couple of points where things add up.
He is a really tough grader, if you miss anything on grammar you will miss points. Every test you will loose more point for the same error. Ex-test 1 -3 point test 4-7 points same error. Not to mention tests are worth 100 points do bad on one and your grade will suffer.
WARNING! Professor White is an incredibly tough grader. I have always received A's in English and writing has always been one of my best subjects. Despite my best effort, I barely got a C-! He expects you to use MLA 8 perfectly! If you make any errors your grade will suffer significantly! I WOULD NOT TAKE A CLASS FROM THIS PROFESSOR AGAIN!
I took Professor White for 101 & 102. He is very clear on his expectations from the beginning. His job is to teach you how to write and how to do so well. I have never been super confident in my writing but after these courses I feel a lot better. 5 papers in both classes and a final presentation + some homework and quizzes throughout the semester
Very easy as long as you do the work. Has journals that you have to post every week and respond to others' as well. Essay tests every few weeks. Very easy. Very clear on what he expects and how to pass. Is tough when it comes to not using third-person and contractions, learned that the hard way. Follow the assignments and it's an easy A.
Took him for 101 and had to take him again for 102. Clear expectations. 5 essays for both courses. VERY anal about grammar and MLA format. Make sure to proof read essays more than once, have someone peer edit it. For 101, pick a good topic in the beginning because your stuck with it the whole semester.
He grades on grammar, not on content so you will get knocked down in points for absolutely every little grammar and punctuation mistake possible and will mark you down for things that he doesn't have listed in his rubric or his expectations. If you are not strong at grammar and writing in general, take someone else. Not an easy A class!!!
Took 223 online. Weekly assignments are easy. Tests are hard. Essay format, must write a an intro, body and conclusion.. but the questions don't require that much depth so I found it hard to stretch. MLA format. Don't event think about making a grammatical error, you will lose several points.
10/10 would take again. Professor White is an excellent instructor and he gives great feedback. He gives ample opportunities for extra credit and as long as you actually read the novels, it should be very easy to get an A. His rubrics are crystal clear and if students complain, it's because they didn't follow them. Ended with 529/500 pts, A+.
Professor White is a great professor! Attendance is not crucial to your grade, and he is always there to help on the papers if you need it! However, if you take his class, be ready to write!
Great class and great prof. Everything was clearly presented. 5 essays with lots of feedback. Feel very prepared for Eng 102. Highly recommended!
He's a tough grader for sure, but that doesn't make him bad. He gave me clear feedback and I appreciated that. I only received a C because I forgot to do one of the essays on time, my bad. I thought the class was well-structured and flowed well. Beware though, he uses a lot of memes in his syllabus and directions. It can get very annoying.
Don't do it. If you are human and sometimes make grammatical errors or are not good at writing unnecessarily lengthy answers with not a single grammatical error.. the weekly assignments are easy. The test, frankly SUCK!
You better be proficient and make no mistakes whatsoever when writing your papers. Homework assignments are easy but dont seem to count for much.
Fantastic class! There are five essays plus homework. Gives a rubric and sample essays to show you what he wants. I have never gotten so much feedback on my essays, which really helped me improve my writing. He expects you to get better on each essay, but isn't that the point? Highly recommended!
avoid,avoid,avoid
Excellent class and prof. Five essays and homework. Answers emails and grades essays quickly. Highly recommended.
Fantastic prof and great class! Recommended!
He's a great professor! He is a tough grader but it's so that you can improve your writing. Easy homework and easy essays just do the work and you'll pass.
Decent instructor. Topics were sort of engaging and essays graded quickly. Feedback was stale, mostly pointing out punctuation errors and use of 1st person, nothing about how to actually better develop ideas. Use of memes, esp in videos, could get to be annoying. Take to pass a class, not to actually get better at writing.
Mike is great, he helps you understand the material and works with you not against you!
Trust me when I say DO NOT take this Professor! If you are human do not take him! Worst teacher and grades you down so bad if you have grammar errors!!! DO NOT TAKE HIM!!!!!
Professor White is one of the best teachers I have ever had. I just finished his English 101 class and it was amazing. Essentially, all you have to do to get an A is do well on the 5 papers which he assigns. He's understanding and will give you great feedback. He's also funny, which is an amazing quality for any teacher. Would take again!
He have us 5 major paper and your grades will really rely on this. The midterms were 5% of grade and finals were 10% grade. You better prepare to be perfect on writing the five major essays. He was extremely a tough grader. He deduct a lot of points for grammatical errors. I went to the writing center, but it did not help. do not take him!!!!!!!!!!
Probably one of the worst teachers I've ever had. Perfect writing or expect a zero.
Read the directions, do the work, go to class, ask questions: it's not that hard. He offers help to EVERYONE WHO WANTS IT. I went to his office several times, and he was super nice and helpful. There is a bunch of extra credit. You get the grade you work for. You do not need perfect writing for a good grade, you just need to work for it.
Great class! Clear assignments with clear directions, lots of helpful feedback. A good choice for Englush classes!
The class consisted of 4 major papers and a presentation at the end. He graded more harshly as we progressed through the year because he expected us to get better through the year. It was a fairly easy class and he is so funny. If you're good with MLA, you won't need the book. Make sure to double check your paper and get it peer edited.
The online class is made up three total tests, each of them two essay-format papers, and one final exam of similar type. Discussions were weekly with specific due dates and the types of questions to answer are great and thought-provoking! He really encourages individual thinking and analysis. You can't be wrong if you can back it up! Great teacher!
Awesome man! Really works around your schedule if anything comes up last minute. Just shoot him a message and he will respond ASAP. Beware of the readings quizzes he gives out. Makes you think a lot, but overall a wonderful man.
He Should not be teaching on-line. He is disrespectful and has unrealistic expectations for a 102 English class. His algorithm is unreasonable.
Professor White is an amazing instructor. I learned more in his courses than any other English teacher I've ever had. He is so great I've taken his classes twice in the last year and I'm enrolled into a third now! He cares about his students as long as they care about the course. I strongly recommend this professor. He's fun to work with.
He grades a little tough, but if you put in the effort this is an easy class to pass. There are 4 essays, and a midterm (that is an extra essay). No quizzes only weekly homework assignments and an essay once a month. The final exam was our final essay that was worth the most amount of points. I would get my essays revised before turning them in.
I liked this prof so much in 101 that I took him again in 102. This class consisted of 4 essays varying in range but great feedback is given. There are also easy homework assignments spread sporadically throughout the semester. The fourth paper was the "final".
No, DO NOT DO IT. I've maintained A-B avg in the past 10 classes I've taken. He nitpicks to the point where if you miss one tiny thing he will give you a 0. He doesn't care about effort. His instructions are extremely unclear to the point where us students just ask eachother for help because he is a joke. Please, any other professor. Couldnt rate 0
This class is a joke. He doesn't teach anything. He will tell you that you can ask him for help, but he doesn't even answer the question or help you, then will proceed to give you a 0. He does NOT care about effort. I have never been so discouraged by a teacher before. Please do not take this class. You will learn NOTHING and FAIL
Prof. White is a pretty cool teacher. He provided us with all the PDF's, so we didn't have to buy any of the books. Attendence isn't mandatory but participation is part of your grade and it's a lot of fun to throw theories back and forth with everyone. He's a tough grader but it's a higher level english class and he tells you exactly what he wants.
Professor White was always willing to help you out if you needed it. He would always email me back within the same day. Even if if you wrote ana amzing argumentative essay, he will deduct so many points over citations and gow they are used, even if you add the original writer in the essay. It was stressful watching so many points being deducted
Two words. Absolutely. Terrible. Worst professor I have ever had by far. He grades very harshly and without good reason. I have never gotten below an A in an english class and I barely earned a C in this class. I learned nothing except the fact that he was rude. Loves to hand out 0's. Small errors will quickly bring you down several letter grades.
I had Professor White for a 16 week course online. He always answered all of my emails within one day (and I sent a lot) and his responses were helpful. There were 5 essays in total and 13 homework assignments. All directions were clear. As long as a person follows directions, they will get a good grade.
He is a strict professor. He replied email so late.
TAKE THIS PROFESSOR! If you want to improve your reading and writing skills, Michael White is the professor for you. I ended high school with a D in English, and I just got 101.8% overall in Professor White's English 223 class! Excelling in his class requires discipline, hard work, time, reading, and FOLLOWING ALL DIRECTIONS, but you WILL succeed!
Professor White has to work a lot on his teaching skills. No power points, no live meetings, no participation at all. Class is average he is a very tough grader. you will not pass this class if you do not dedicate at least 3 full days a week from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. He is very clear at the beginning saying that he is not here to teach.
Without a doubt one of the worst professors I have ever had the misfortune of taking. He will happily hand out 0s for incredibly minor formatting errors without reading a single word you wrote. Ignores emails from students and disregards his own grading scale in favor of failing students. Expect failure if he is your teacher.
Terrible!! I was a few sentences off the word count for the first essay due worth 100 points. I did not do it intentionally. Other than that I met every requirement and I thought I had a great paper. He gave me a 0 and did not care. Im the one paying you to take your class and you cant give me any credit for a few sentences off. Ridiculous
Miserable class. Things like simple formatting errors are graded harshly. He will say that you wrote a great paper and still give an F if you missed instructions. I don't ever get C's in my classes. I thought his passion for the subject would show in the course, but he gives lazy vague feedback. Made me hate Cyberpunk Lit, learned nothing at all
Was always very rude when he replied to my emails, he has a lot of learning to do about online teaching.
Took a science fiction course with him. Really enjoyed the readings, stuff I'd never have read otherwise. Four tests and weekly journals. Clear expectations, lots of help offered by him and the college. Always gave multiple essay prompts, had to pick only one of them. Super thorough grader with lots of comments and help offered. Take him!
He does not offer any help for any assignments and takes for ever to respond to assignments. Most responses are past the due dates of the assignments that we needed help on. He will give you zeros on your papers for minor errors and offer no feedback or chances to revise your work. No idea how he still has a job at CSN when he puts forth 0 effort
Great class. I have never had so much feedback on my work. He even gives page numbers from the textbook to make it easier. Papers were returned quickly, like three days. Homework graded in 1-3 days. Emails answered always within 24 hours, often in just a few hours. Paper topics interesting with several choices given. Recommended!
Very harsh and strict on grading any minor mistake he will give you an automatic F he gives no extra time in turning in work make ups disappointed with the negative experience I had with this profesor
Just don't take this class, he was a harsh grader and wasn't helpful at all, he gave me an F in every assigment so i just dropped out
Just don't take this class, he was a harsh grader and wasn't helpful at all, he gave me an F in every assigment so I just dropped out. I will never take a class taught by this instructor.
IF YOU CARE FOR UR MENTAL HEALTH AND GPA PLEASE SAVE URSELF FROM TAKING THIS CLASS!!! Literally the worst teacher I've had in my WHOLE life. Have had straight As my whole life and in other college classes, but barely passed with a C-. Grades so harshly that when I missed a "." on my work cited that was -2 points, he will do anything so u can fail.
wish he could see what things his students have said here with the hope he could become a better professor but unfortunately he doesn't care. One time in the classroom he got out of his pocket his vape pen and started vaping DURING the lecture he said I don't care what the office says. At least 6 people have dropped out of his class till now.
I have had a different experience than many others that rated Professor White. I thought the class was awesome. We had fun in class. The grading criteria were clearly spelled out. I usually got a graded paper back in two or three days. He answered my emails quickly, like within a day. Great class, great prof, definitely take him.
Do not get this professor if you do not want your grade to affect your GPA. He should be a caring teacher, but he is indifferent and the book is the teacher instead. I did good in my other English classes, and the Professors were fun and caring with the students. He should not be a professor if he can not help his students.
Everything clearly presented and spelled out. Clear directions. Lots of useful feedback. Quick to answer emails. Recommended!
cares about all the little things, will explain to you how to cite a source properly w/o using a generator and then... when you listen to the instructions he just gave you, tell you that it is wrong. can't read the vibe of the room more often than not and admits to vaping in his office when he isn't allowed to. 11/10 - cool guy, not cool teacher.
Love this class! It also really prepared me for writing papers in my other classes. Highly recommended!
A great class and a great prof. I was surprised by how much fun it was. Take him!
You fail his class over small format errors, He checks to make sure your works cited references are exactly right and he can find them, otherwise a zero and a fail! Wait for another professor. Dont ask for help,
I went back and looked at the grades me vs others. except for the busy work, it seemed the best grade was a C. if you do take him, your work has to be perfect and he will give you a zero if you don't follow directions exactly. 751 words and you write 749 it's an automatic zero, even if u counted your name by accident. LISTEN TO THE RATINGS!!
He was okay, I took his ENG 101 class and liked it, however, I did not enjoy his ENG 102 class, he was a tough grader, and not very understanding wouldn't recommend but not the worst
It is the most well thought out online class I've had so far. Everything was made clear, directions were specific, expectations were clear. Met him three times in his office for help. He was very nice and helped me a lot. Always answered emails quickly even on weekends. Good class if you want to learn; bad class if you just want to whine.
Tough grader who can be indifferent, but the class prepares you well for writing. unstuck study was a lifesaver for study prep - highly recommend it alongside the textbook.
He will tell you to get help from the Writing Center but will grade you down when you use the correct and updated MLA Citation requirements. This man has his own MLA citation that he creates, and the stupid book he uses is outdated. You will not learn anything from him. He will fail you if you have 1 sentence you didn't cite properly. RUN!! PLEASE
Great class, surprisingly fun. Prof White is awesome. Very helpful, always willing to answer questions and answer emails. Definitely recommended.
I took Professor White three semesters ago and what I learned in his class has helped me in several classes. Class was put together well, and he gives a lot of feedback on essays. Def recommended!
He really is an inspiration to me, his lectures were informative and interesting. The papers assigned were also some of my favorites I've ever written. Take his class.
Amazing prof, highly recommend.
I have no idea why this guy has bad ratings. Follow guidelines and you are almost guaranteed an A. Low work load. I really liked this class. I had never written papers like these before, and I found the class to be interesting. Just follow the guidelines!
Amazing professor, interesting content, loved his class. 10/10 recommend. Never felt overwhelmed in this class
He is by far one of the nicest and understanding. He does have a good sense of humor and will do his best to help you succeed.
Everything was practically handed to you between lectures, textbooks, and papers. Instructions were clear and concise and the information needed to succeed was in your own hands.
Professor White was one of the best profs I have ever had. He always made sure lectures were easy to understand and made the material fun and lighthearted. Cares deeply about making sure his students understand the material and will help in any way he can. Would love to have him again!
Definitely take White. Especially if you're an older learner. He is easy to work with and is very patient with students. His randomness makes it easy to pay attention, you can get a good laugh out of class. There were alot of old school references (80s kids) which made it fun.
Mike was instantly a favorite of mine after the very first day. He is so passionate about what he teaches and has such an amazing spirit and charm. I've laughed every class.
Honestly out of all the professors I've had at CSN, he is definitely the best one. Actually knows what he's talking about and is open to English related conversations out of class that are very enlightening.
Easy to follow expectations. Everything is laid out easily each week.
Please listen to the bad reviews because they are true. I turned in an essay that was 915 words and he still give me a zero, just because I made two mistakes.
Professor White was extremely understanding and kind. He is always available to meet outside of class time and answers his emails quickly. He was alot of help and a big reason why I excelled in this class. Definitely take him.
He is so passionate about what he teaches, and he cares about his students. His grading criteria is very clear and easy to follow, and he is so enthusiastic to help. He made class fun, and his lectures were very helpful when it comes to writing the papers. Peer reviews are a big part of your grade and helpful to your peer so put effort into them!
Professor White was absolutely amazing. When I had an emergency and needed to miss a week of class, he helped me get back on track by moving some deadlines back. He gives insightful feedback and is very helpful. He creates an atmosphere of acceptance in his classroom, and he engages in conversation with students during class. Fantastic.
He is one of the best professors to take a class with throughout this semester I like the way he teaches the class
if you want to have an exam free class with an awesome professor, take this class
Such an amazing class. Chill but fascinating. Loved this professor.
Prof. Whites grades with a fine toothed comb for his essays. If you are fluent in his specific and outdated form of MLA you will excel in this class. MLA matters more to him then the actual content of your essay. He will fail you if you get your MLA wrong, especially work cited. If he can't find your quote say goodbye to your grade.
great teacher, very personable and there for feedback on papers if you need. You will need the textbook. has "writing days" and conference weeks so you won't actually have class every week. His criteria is very clear and I thought it was a super easy class.
