Best teacher at SBCC. Loves what he does and it shows!
Great and wonderful teacher. He makes learning physics fascinating, he loves teaching, and it shows. I recommend to all, although a challenging course.
Great teacher. Fun class.
HELPFULL!!!!
Great teacher, goofy in a good way that just holds your attention and makes you love physics. Not a difficult class, especially those who have taken physics in high school or phys 101.
Very good teaher but the exams were very hard.
This is one of the best professors I have ever had. His tests are challenging, but fair. He is excellent in his explanations. He is easy to approach and will always take the time to explain further if needed. The TA Don Ion, is very helpful also.
Dr.Young is a very, very good teacher. He brings his youthful energy to the class. His exams (especially the last number on each exam), really tests your knowledge on the subject. Very knowledgeable, knows what he's doing. Very laid back, easy to talk to.
This is a very hard class, but Dr. Young makes the subject bearable. There are long homework assignments, but they prepare you for the hard exams. The labs are pretty straight forward and usually lasts between 1 and 2 hours.
All these people are dead on. Young is a great teacher, and is very willing to listen to students questions and concerns. Homework is challenging, and tests are equally as challenging. But everything is doable!! Don Ion is also a GREAT asset to the physics department and a great student resource!
Dr. Young is very easy to approach. He is very helpful and willing to take time to explain the anything you want. He also works with your schedule in case you can’t make it to a lab or lecture.
Physics 122 is the hardest class in physics 121 series. Stuff you learn is tough, but he makes it easy to understand. Well his exams are relatively easy if you take difficulty of materials into your consideration. He can make hard exams but he doesnt. He is pretty fair.

Good teacher. Hard tests, but fair.
excellent teacher. explains the material very clearly and understandably. tests are fairly hard but could be much harder. labs are about 1-2 hours and pretty easy.
One of the best teachers I have ever had. his 102 class is extremely easy the math is very basic. He does a demo for everthing he teaches. The class changes your understanding of the world, it should be a required to take.
His tests are usually straightforward but require a very concrete understanding of the material. He grades pretty fairly and is very helpful. He explains everything very well, although sometimes it is hard to stay focused for two hours at 9AM. :)
Top notch teaching. He has his teaching routines down. He listens well and gives people adequate time to get exposure to the material. All the principles are demonstrated very well. I wish he didn't skip relativity; hard to demonstrate, I guess! Feedback on the homework needs improvement. The labs were good, but only covered half of the workbook.
A very caring teacher who encourages his students that success is possible.
Awesome teacher. makes physics fun. enjoys his job. very enthusiastic and encouraging. makes the physics clear and understandable. one of the most helpful and caring teachers i have ever seen. highly recommended.
SBCC is very fortunate to have a professor of Dr. Youngs caliber. He is very dedicated, and he enjoys teaching physics. The subject itself may not be so easy, but with his crystal clear explanation, he will help you immensly. Do the homework, it's the only way to learn physics!
Hard work. Very rewarding
Easily the best instructor on campus. The material is tough but this guy is absolutely brilliant in his explanations and lecture organizations. The amount of stuff he knows(even outside the classes he teaches) is UNBELIEVABLE, as well how well he is able to explain it.
he is great.
Very animated interesting teacher. He is very good at explaining the coursework. The homework is out of the book, and is very easy. The tests as well as the final are all easy. Very good introductory class.
Mike Young is an incredible professor. By far the best I've had during my Engineering career. My rating of Mike is genuine. His classes are difficult only because the material is difficult. He will promptly respond to questions before, during, and after class. Incredible sense of humor. You will see why he has the best average rating of SBCC.
I don't get the hype. He is fairly nice but basically spends the whole class going off on a tangent about something totally random. And then 2 whole classes were devoted to counseling the class on what engineering classes to take. What if you aren't an eng. major? You sit and roll your eyes... The class was not that hard but i didn't learn much.
Able to keep the class interested. Effective professor. Relaxed when it comes to homework and tests. Physics is already fun, but he makes it better.
He is the best teacher i've ever had by far. He was so hilarious and still managed to teach you the subject. I actually look forward to his class after a morning of Calculus. Take him you wont regret it. (he rides fire extinguishers) lol
Can tell he absolutely loves physics. Very willing to help students. Pretty easy class since it is such a low level, however does a good job of explaining the material in a simple matter. Took class over summer, relatively little homework as far as the amount of problems. Super easy lab. Tests more from book than lecture.
hes funny ,lab is free
he has the same voice as the mad scientist from the simpsons, and it entertains me every class. he loves what he does and it shows, makes every class really interesting
He explains material so clear, and he is sooo NICE!! I think he is one of the nicest professor in SBCC.
Mike is really cool and nice. He loves physics and has a lot of experience in the field. If you talk to him outside of lecture you will see how interesting he is. Take him, even though you probably don't have a choice lol. Go MIKE YOUNG!
Super easy, explains everything perfectly. Wants you to get a good grade. Actually cares about students. One of the best teachers I've ever had.
If all the teachers were half as good as Prof. young, then we would all be lawyers, doctors and engineers. He makes it so easy to understand and is funny. I'd love to have him in the future.
Truly the best teacher I've ever had. Dr. Young knows his stuff, and he knows it well. Most importantly he has been teaching for many years, and his experience with students really shows through in his teaching style. I post this review in hopes of there being more physicists educated by Dr. Young in our world.
I have just finished the entire physics series, and Michael young is hands down the best teacher I have ever had in my entire life. His knowledge of the material is evident in his teaching, and he can convey it well to any level of understanding. He is really funny, and his test expect that you know have a concrete understanding of the material
Well, I am not a lonbe in my comments because Dr, Young is the best teacher at SBCC
Best Professor or Best Professor EVER? A seriously amazing individual that will teach you Physics and make it entertaining at the same time. You don't meet too many genuinely nice, down to earth professors. Upvote.
Mike Young is a great teacher who loves what he does. He is energetic, doesn't mind taking time for individual students and is always a pleasure to be around. While I think his lectures may be a little sloppy, he is BY FAR the best professor at SBCC.
great teacher. loves his job. and will answer any stupid question you have without making you feel dumb. highly recomended but be prepaired to study and attend class.
Amazing teacher! I highly recommend his class. His enthusiasm makes the class really fun and enjoyable!
Without a doubt, this man has got to be the best professor on campus. He is PHENOMENAL. Physics is not an easy subject yet he makes me want to learn and keep trying...I actually look forward to going to class. You will not find a better physics professor anywhere else. Guranteed.
the greatest professor EVER. enough said.
The professor is amazing. He loves to goof off and show you physics. He is clear on his teachings and his home work is directly from the book so you won't miss it. Just study and pay attention.
3rd class I've taken with him, and he is by far my favorite teacher I've ever had. He inspires me to do physics and gives outstanding lectures. For this last semester, he got a standing ovation for his last lecture, and it was well deserved. If you enjoy physics this will be one of the best classes you ever take.
One, if not the greatest professor at city collge. Not one bad thing I can say about him. He cares about his students like no one else and he is passionate about what he is doing. You'll probably change your major into physics after having him
Best teacher ever. He truly loves teaching. Can not wait to have him again.
Amazing teacher: fun to listen to, quirky and caring, and ridiculously intelligent.
He is an amazing professor who makes learning physics fun. He is by far my favorite professor on campus. The work is a bit difficult, but he is extremely willing to clear up any issues you have.
Great guy! Very passionate about physics and cares for his students. Love his class, he could teach physics to a baby. His tests are hard, but the rest of the class is great! Take it!
Very helpful. He clearly loves what he teaches and his passion is contagious.
Great teacher and great lecturer. The class is hard but its physics. The one thing I would hold against him is the fact that he does cumulative finals. It's kinda ridiculous if you ask me, especially with no notes. It's just too much to remember. Just don't go into the final thinking you can help your grade
He is awesome. His stuffs in Phys123 is very tough. Obviously, physics is not an easy subject. He is explaining physics clearly. If you do your job on each exams, you can get "A" like me.
Best teacher I've had at this school. His lectures are always incredibly clear and he goes to incredible lengths to be sure all his students succeed.
Dr. Young is an exceptional teacher. He has a knack for conveying difficult concepts in a way that makes them easy and accessible. Not only do I now have a very strong grasp of physics, but I genuinely believe I have also become a better problem solver as a result of his class.
Dr. Young is definitely a great teacher. His tests are on the challenging side, but he presents information better than any teacher I've ever had. Take physics with Dr. Young, you wont regret it.
tests are so hard, well physics is hard! but dr young is an AMAZING teacher and he has a great personality I am so glad i get to have him for every physics!!!
Dr Young is one of those professors who defines your time in college. I took Physics 102 as an Economics major for my science class and ended up switching to engineering because of his infectious love of science (best decision of my life by the way). His lecture are amazing but prepare to work. 122 is the hardest class at CC by far.
The best teacher in the world. He is extraordinary. I know go to UC Berkeley and he is by far the best lecturer I have ever had. If every one in the work took one of his classes they would all become science and engineering majors. He could easily teach every subject from Math to Chemistry. He is brilliant. His in class demonstrations are legendary
Dr Young is one of the best professors at CC. The physics classes are pretty hard from 121 and on, but he tries to his best to make it as simple as possible. He is also very helpful and labs are amazingly easy. He also films the lectures so you can skip them in the mornings and watch them on youtube later. Great professor
During tests he sits and at the front grinning broadly the whole time. When you look at the test you know why.
Although I wasn't able to get super close to Dr. Young, he was by far my favorite professor on campus. "Read the math", "Do you want all the answers to all the homework probelms?" are some of his favorite lines to say :). He wrote an awesome recommendation letter for me, and is one of the primary reasons why I'm going to UCSB to study physics now.
Dr. Young teaches physics in a way to get you totally immersed into the subject. Respected by many, Dr. Young has a way with students with his lectures because he gets you thinking outside of the box, because there are much more "physics" involved than intro calculus based physics.
Dr. Young is what I remember most from my time at SBCC. He's a fantastic teacher his lectures are a lot of fun, his demonstrations are amazing and his enthusiasm is very apparent. I eventually went on to UCLA to study physics and all I can say is Dr. Young is still the best physics professor I've ever had. I highly recommend taking his classes.
Seriously one of the best professors I've ever had. I've taken 121, 123, and now 122 with him. His classes even made me switch my major to physics! He's very enthusiastic about the subject, extremely knowledgeable, and is able to make even the most difficult concepts manageable.
Dr. Young is definitely the best teacher at SBCC, His lectures are amazing, always explains stuff as best as he can, and has the best attitude with the students and staff. Although you need to study a lot, his tests are not hard if you do the homeworks but it's physics so It is Hard anyway.
Just an amazing teacher and person. Dr Young made me love physics. His explanations are fantastic best teacher I have ever had
DrYoung is a great teacher in many respects. He is there for you when you need him, and provides numerous online resources to help you including putting his lectures online. But be forewarned that his classes are in no way easy, his homework assignments are long and his tests are extremely difficult. His classes are probably the hardest I've taken
Dr. Young is amazing. Lectures are fun, and he's very passionate about Physics. And you can always go talk to him. Be warned, tests are tough, and you'll spend many nights in the library. But when you're done, you're left feeling accomplished.
Mike Young is really smart and exceptionally kind.
Mike Young is literally the best professor that I have ever had. The subject is hard. The tests can be hard. The time commitment is real. But you're a STEM major so you were already expecting that. Dr. Young teaches with energy and passion, grades fairly, and does everything in his power to make sure you have every opportunity to pass his class.
One of my favorite teachers. Very enthusiastic about teaching.
Without a doubt the best professor and class sequence I have had in my college career thus far.
He's a damn good teacher.
The best Physics instructor around. Intelligent all over the board. Homie could derive a Dirac Delta function on the spot. My favorite by far. Fair grader!!!
Mike Young is the best teacher ever! Amazing lecture and really clear. Really helpful and care for the students.
Amazing professor, best professor in SBCC. Amazing lectures, do the homework ( i promise it helps, don't just copy )
Fantastic professor for a pretty hard class
Dr. Young is an absolutely fantastic professor. He's full of energy, funny, and really helps you to understand the material. He provides so many great opportunities to learn and succeed, going as far as to provide recordings of all his lecture online for reviewing or catching up on missed classes. His tests are challenging but graded very kindly.
He explained everything in a fantastic and fascinating way. The examples, demonstrations, and visualizations are cool and quite helpful.
His online lectures are some of the most concise physics lectures you will find. Brilliant at introducing new topics and he is a great explainer.
Great class! Mike young is a great lecturer all homework was given 100%, same with all the labs as long as you do them. 86% test average to get an A. Definitely would take again.
Second time having Michael Young as my teacher and I am again so impressed by his teaching ability and willingness to work with each individual student.
Lectures are very focused on the fundamentals of the problem solving, understood clearly by his ability.
Dr. Young is the master of Physics lectures, and you can hear his passion in his voice. I will agree with others that the tests can make you think, but all tests should be like that; it proves you actually tried to learn the material. As he always says, "Read the math, don't just do that math."
I took his phys110/111 classes during both summer sessions, and I have to say he is the best professor I've ever had in any science class I've taken. Very passionate about what he does, he really wants you to succeed and does the best job simplifying complex physics problems and concepts. Also very hilarious. It was an honor to take his class.
Iv head great things about him but when I took him in the summer he was one the most disapointed teachers I had ever taken. First he dousnt take his lecture seriously enough for us to prepare to do the homework. His exams literally have 5 question which makes it complicated. Trust me you do not want to take him in the summer.
Dr. Young made physics logical and understandable. I thought physics would be worst class in my major, but Dr. Young made it one of the best classes I have ever had.
Dr. Youngs lectures were very clear. Tests were more than fair. 5 questions per test perfect, I dont know why anyone would complain about that. More than five would have been too hard. He gives lots of partial credit so even if you only understand some of the material you could get more than half the points.
Dr. Young is a very hard worker and helpful professor. He would come to class 30 minutes early everyday to answer questions and help with homework. On test days, he would come at 7:00am and answer questions plus he would stay an hour late answering questions the day before exams.
Dr. Young knows how to explain physics in simple and understandable ways. He makes learning fun and interesting
Spot-on great teacher. Very clear. He's like the energizer bunny. Very fair grader
Dr. Young is very clear and can make complex problem simple
clear lectures
Dr. Young uses lots of demonstrations that makes learning the concepts easy.
You will wish that your professors are as great as Dr. Young. He is EXTREMELY CLEAR with his expectation and does his best to really prepare students. He has the resources and cares for his students grades. DON'T LOOK ELSEWHERE! TAKE DR. YOUNG
Mike is great and makes a typically hard subject way easier to handle. He's a really great guy and an amazing/engaging teacher. He also puts a lot of time into his job (with his commute and amount of hours he spends teaching). He is generally really chill and wants people who need the class to be able to take it. I crashed his class both semesters.
Honestly all the other reviews are accurate, it's not hard to do well in this class if you know your math. Most of the people that struggled in this class were taking Calc 2 at the same time, that's just an overload of math and not a full understanding of it. If you can, finish Calc 2 then take Phys 121 and it'll really put meaning behind math.
He is a super nice teacher!
Took Dr. Young for Physics 121, 122, and 123. Easily the best professor I've taken a class with while at SBCC. Every lecture is 10/10. He inspired me to major in engineering, and I'd highly recommend his physics series to anyone interested in STEM.
If you dislike or are scared of physics, Dr. Young is the professor to take. He gives really clear examples. A lot of the test questions were the same as some in-class examples. The homework is sometimes a lot harder than the actual tests themselves. The labs are super easy as well. Great professor overall.
Michael Young is a realllyyyyy nice teacher. As an international student, it is ok to bring the dictionary to the test. And also can ask for help if you don't understand the word in the test. If you need to take physics class, he is the best choose.
Mike young is an amazing professor who knows what he is talking about and he is a kind person who cares about his students. With that said your grade is in your own hands 75% of your grade is 3 exams and a final and the rest is mandatory HW. Hardest class I've taken get ready to cram hw and video lecture in order to know what's going on.
Easily the best professor I've ever had. He has mastered teaching: 10/10 lectures. He makes difficult material do-able. He cares a lot about his students and is also hilarious. His lectures were actually interesting (even as a non-physics / engineering major!) Don't miss the opportunity to take Dr. Young!!!
One of the best professors I have ever had! I was nervous to take physics but Dr. Young made the course so fun and easy! I am considering taking more physics classes in the future because of how amazing he made the whole experience. His lectures are amazing and he goes very in-depth. The exams aren't too difficult either. Highly recommend!
Great professor! Explains things in a very clear and easy to understand manner. This guy was born to teach, undoubtedly the best professor at sbcc and probably the best professor I'll have in my entire time in college even after transfer.
I've taken every advanced physics class at SBCC... and Dr. Young is the reason why. He made me fall in love with physics. He is a fantastic lecturer, very thoughtful, understanding of his students, eager to discuss his life experiences and research, and by far the backbone of SBCC's physics program. He makes physics easier (it's still hard though).
Young is a great physics teacher, however his lectures can be very long. As long as you do the homework and labs he gives you 100%. Grades on completion not correctness. Tests can be hard but manageable. I would definitely recommend his class. He makes physics easy to understand
If you can't pass the first Exam with a C or higher I suggest you drop that class, because the material is only going to get harder and harder. Even if you pass the second exam barley, you won't make it though the Final exam. His lecture are long, but they make you understand the problem and idea. I suggest a study group of this class.
Professor Young is probably my favorite Professor that Ive ever had. His lectures are engaging, specific, and even fun at times. Hes very passionate about physics, and his excitement is contagious. I cant wait to take more advanced physics classes with him. You should be can tell he really cares about his students success!
Dr. Young is great. The homework and labs are graded on completion, but there are a lot. If you do the homework, you will do well on the exams which is basically the main part of your grade. He is very accommodating and understanding, go to his class and you will learn a lot.
I would say Mr. Young is a role model teacher. He sets kids up for success in further physics classes and is a fantastic lecturer. His physics 102 class is laid out knowing that a lot of kids are taking calculus and other difficult classes along with his. I wish there was a Mr. Young for every subject.
Professor Young is simply amazing. His passion and enthusiasms are infectious. His lectures feel special and instill a sense of wonder and awe for whatever it is he is teaching. The concepts that he teaches are tough to understand, but he does everything he can to help you understand. Professor Young is an absolute gem.
Literally the best professor I've ever had. Even if the course work is hard, he will always be there to help you. He has really long and accessible office hours. Very relaxed on late work and grading, even graded by completion for my class. Truly cares about your well being and your learning of the course work. Love Professor Young!!
Easily the best teacher I've ever taken. Dr. Young's enthusiasm and brilliant lecturing is inspiring, and makes you want to learn physics. I feel like many teachers, being so familiar with their subjects, occasionally come across as patronizing. Dr. Young never once made me feel that way, and broke down the fundamentals with unbelievable clarity.
Dr Young is an awesome teacher. He genuinely cares about his students and their success. Yes, the material is hard, but with a professor like Dr Young it is significantly more enjoyable. His lectures are entertaining and he is super accommodating and will answer questions at any time! 100/10 recommend, even in the summer!
I really wanted to love this class and the professor seems so great but today the online students had 7 hours of lecture and lab. 7 HOURS. We have a test tomorrow and I have to be honest it's a bit absurd. I get that it's summer and double speed but 7 hours is ridiculous. And that doesn't even include 20 multipart questions assigned for today.
Never had a dull moment in his class. Its adorable how passionate he is in the subject and it gives me motivation to learn such a hard topic. SBCC is lucky to have him.
Honestly so overrated. Everyone says he is the best professor but he is just so overkill imo. If you are doing 122/123, be prepared to have no social/love life and no free time. You will need to spend 30+ hours a week if you want the A...ALL THIS JUST FOR ONE PHYSICS CLASS. Just ridiculous imo. Folsom was so much easier/better. Overrated AF!!
Absolutely crazy to take if you're not going to be an engineer
Excellent introduction to Physics. I had fun, and I learned a lot. Watch his vids to know what you need for the tests, as the book is not very important for the class besides a few homework questions. Homework does not correlate to what is on the tests.
Professor Young is by far one of the best teachers I've ever had. He really cares about his students, and even though the course material is hard, he does his best to help everyone. I've literally emailed him on Sunday nights with hw questions and he responds with a video in the hour. Amazing guy don't let any review tell you differently!
Great professor. He really knows his stuff and you can tell he is really passionate about the subject. He's also very fair when it comes to grading as he awards a lot of partial credit even if you don't get the problem right. I think he prepares you well for the tests that he gives.
Professor Young's PHY102 class is a great introduction to physics. His passionate lectures make the subject engaging, and he's always willing to help. Using unstuck study alongside the textbook made studying more efficient. The workload is manageable if you stay on top of it.
you can tell he really likes physics and cares about teaching
Very good professor. His lectures are pretty long but amazing. Good man!!!
Goated professor. A lot of studying and lectures. Exams were relatively difficult even if they are open note. I found this course more difficult than 122 in terms of learning the concepts.
Best professor I've ever had. I've been exposed to many physics teachers throughout undergrad across the US—none have come close to his caliber. Physics is hard to learn, it's even harder when you have a teacher who struggles to teach. Dr. Young is the rare person who enables learning. He not only has the passion but a gift for teaching.
I don't know about tests but this guy carried me through my uni career for his lectures. I got an A for all three of my quarter courses BECAUSE OF THIS MAN. He makes Physics so open and approachable for everybody and I wish I could take a class with him as my professor. His teaching is SO GOOD, it's literally Professor Leonard but for physics.
HE IS THE BEST PROFESSOR ANYONE CAN HAVE. TAKE HIM
