AWFUL CLASS THERE IS BASICALLY A MIDTERM EVERY TWO WEEKS WITH AN UNBELIEVABLE AMOUNT OF INFO ON EACH ONE...ITS COMPLETELY IRRATIONAL TO HAVE STUDENTS MEMORIZE THIS MUCH IN SUCH A SHORT SPAN OF TIME, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS....IT WILL CONSUME YOUR LIFE!!!!!
Very enjoyable class. Professor genuinely interested in her students. Fairly easy if you listen to her lecture and read the text. Needed minimal studying for a 4.0. Enjoyable Labs. All around great class.
I'm not sure how easy 101 is but ocean 102 is extremely difficult. There are 5 tests and cover a ton of detail information. And what's even worse is that the tests are worded poorly and they do not reflect the effort you put in. Definitely not an easy class anymore. I fully regretted that I took this course!
Mikelle is sweet and a decent teacher, not super engaging though. The class itself is REALLY hard! I typically do well in science classes, but this one is just based on rote memorization. The tests are poorly worded and questions are phrased in a way that is intended to trick you. I would not recommend this class.
WORST CLASS EVER!I took this class only because i heard it was an easy class. There was way too much effort required to get a decent grade considering it was OCEANS 102. There were 5 tests and 5 quizzes. The tests were hard and wanted to trick you.Professor herself was annoying and had speech problems. Cant believe I got my lowest GPA in this class
Take the internet section, the lectures are useless bc she makes the slides more confusing instead of clarifying them. All the slides are posted online, just use those. Don't bother with the textbook. It was a miserable class, it was too hard for the non-majors it was designed for. The curve is lower in the B section, so consider it.
Personality-wise, she isn't mean, rude, or unhelpful. But the class is not easy at all, not that I was expecting it to be. I feel like to be successful in this class you have to have prior knowledge of oceanography. And she doesn't grade anything, it's all on the TA's. If you feel prepared for the tests, you're probably not.
Interesting and easy class. If you go to lab and do the assignments you will be set for the tests, which are really easy. The class never goes very in depth into any specific topics, it just goes over the basics of a variety of stuff.
Not exactly the easiest class. A lot of material is covered, and the final is accumulative. Skipping lectures is definitely not a good idea, and labs are in the fisheries building (way way way far from campus).
She wasn't the teacher, but she organized the class with different guest lecturers and wrote all the exams. As long as you do the homework and attend lecture, or watch it online, you will easily get about a 3.8. She did a fantastic job making sure everything stayed cohesive and her tests were very straight forward, exactly like the homeworks
I received a 4.0 in the class even though my test scores weren't perfect. I definitely used up office hours with my T.A. to further explain some key points. Youtube better explained a lot of things for me. The key thing is to review all the slides, go to labs, get all EC, and utilize office hours. If you do all that, you should be fine.
Not an exciting class. You should attend the lectures, or at least watch the screencasts. Use both ppt and textbooks. Class is medium level. Won't be taking anymore OCEAN class at uw.
Mikelle is willing to take time to clarify concepts for her students. Always looked forward to going to lecture. It's not a super easy course, and takes some time especially if you are not in the Major, but I found it interesting. Overall, a very caring professor, and nice class.
Lectures were very boring, barely anyone ever showed up. She has multiple choice exams, but has so many trick questions it's hard to get a good grade even if you understand the concepts.
Got a 3.7 in this class with minimal effort. You only need to study 2 days before an exam reviewing the study guide to get above average. She records all her lectures but has days where she gives participation points out to the class so I wouldn't skip lecture. Only downside is having labs in the oceanography building. Labs are easy though.
This is a great class to take! There is hardly any homework, and all her tests are based off of her lecture slides. Just review them well and you will be set for the test. She is very nice, and wants her students to learn. DONT BUT THE BOOK! you don't need it. But do pay attention in lecture even when things get boring.
Lectures are very discussion oriented but not mandatory. She does make her tests tricky but she is great at clarifying anything. A little extra credit is given to boost GPA further. Would recommend some interest in science. Weekly homework given, completion time varies based on understanding and interest in topics.
Don't take this class if you are planning on it being an easy Natural World. Lectures were boring and hardly anyone attended, about half only showed up for the 4 tests. Even if you did attend lectures it was hard to get a decent grade on the tests because of all the trick questions. I definitely regret not dropping it after the first week.
this woman was an assistant in the class and must have written all the exams and the homework. Everything is irrelevant to what you do in a quiz section/homework to what you get on the exam. Plus for 3 credit class having 10-13 pages of homework and 9 page(13 final) is insane! Regret taking that nonsense
Bad class, assignments were not related to anything you would do in class or quiz section
Everyone in my class thought she was great and a lot of fun. It was so cool to watch someone who loves their job so much and is so enthusiastic about what they're teaching. I've heard bad things about her in other classes but the class I took from her was a lot of fun. I did reasonably well not reading the textbook and not studying for tests.
The most incohesive class I have ever taken at UW. Everything you do is completely irrelative to what you will be graded on.
she gets off topic really easily, we always fall behind. seems to me a little disorganized. she is really enthusiastic about oceanography, which is great, but we don't get through the material on schedule. sometimes she doesn't even get through the information we need for lab which gets really confusing at times.
She is a very enthusiastic and fun professor, but there is a large disconnect between class and tests. Very understanding teacher and extremely accommodating. I love her enthusiasm. Although she doesn't require using the book, it is great for studying and it has very good practice problems in it. Fun class, but a good amount of self teaching.
She seems nice enough. Problem is she's always behind, about a week behind on her lectures. Her labs get confusing because she doesn't talk about the material on them until a week after we have already done them. There seems to be miscommunication between her and her TA's. Just really confusing and unorganized.
Really loves what she teaches and has a passion for her job. I thought this class was extremely interesting and pretty easy too. I would definitely recommend this as an easy elective class.
Great professor and really fun class. She does get off topic a bit but everything she lectured about was interesting and applicable. Labs were fun and easy and helped to better understand lecture topics. Mikelle was always willing to help and very accommodating. Great class and great professor!
She is a fun and super nice teacher. She loves what she does and the classes she teaches are fun and not too difficult.
Professor Nuwer was great! Helpful, enthusiastic, caring, and her syllabus and workload requirements were easy to understand and very manageable. She also encourages a lot of feedback from students on how to improve the learning experience. Highly recommend!
I love Ms. Nuwer sooo much. She helped me decide that I really want to go into oceanography and she really means it when she says she'll help you with anything. The class is SO MUCH FUN take it!!! It's interesting even if you're not heavy on science.
Mikelle is super enthusiastic and really helpful. I would recommend taking one of her lectures even if you're not into Oceanography! She made an effort to get to know the students- even in the 200 person lecture.
This course was one of the most boring course I have taken at the UW. The materials are easy to understand but most of the time professor goes off topic during lectures and doesn't flow smoothly. It easy overall but you need to endure the pain of the lecture
The first midterm was easy, second one was way harder so be ready. She is clear about what they will be on, and she is nice, but honestly doesn't spend enough time on the harder topics, or the ones that she wants you to "connect." It really threw me off that the second midterm was so much harder. This class is easy if you goo class and study seshes
Mikelle Nuwer is an excellent professor. She is knowledgeable, and her lectures are clear, logical, interesting and helpful. This professor cares about each student, and makes an effort to get to know everyone in the class. She is fair and reasonable in her assessments, and she continually works to improve this course. Highly recommend.
She's super easy as a professor; if you're taking a couple harder courses, this one is good to boost your GPA. Honestly, her lectures are dull. The information is very easy and she takes too long to cover it. I only attended class for exams and came out with a 90% without even trying. She's really nice, but it's boring sad to say.
She's a really passionate and enthusiastic professor, and the material was really easy to grasp. The only thing is that she knows so much that she goes off-topic in lectures a lot. Prepare for a nice and passionate professor, but also prepare to be a week behind in content. Don't worry, she doesn't put anything on tests you don't cover in lecture.
Dr. Nuwer inspired me to pursue marine science and is super kind but also has a tough-love vibe. If you're tentative about STEM courses, talk to her. Seriously, she's awesome. Lectures do get off topic, but nothing you can't figure out from the textbook. TALK TO THE TAs! They make all the difference.
I took her my first quarter of freshman year and she made me fall more in love with the ocean. Over thanksgiving she invited any of her students who had no where to go to join her, mind you the class was probably over 100 students. She was very informative and clear when she spoke. She was great!
Professor Nuwer is super nice, and while lectures were often long and boring for me, when I studied for her (pretty straightforward) exams, I realized just how much I actually learned about the ocean. It can be an easy A as long as you study lecture notes and do the weekly assignments. Grading is lenient!
I had her for a beginning oceanography class and I really enjoyed her lecture. She is a good presenter and knowledgeable on her subject. She doesn't hesitate to get involved with students and make the subject matter interesting. Out of all the teachers I've had I really enjoy listening to her lecture. I'm really interested in oceanography now.
Really easy class all you need to do is study the lecture slides, otherwise go to your TA if you have any questions. Didn't even need to open the textbook (which i regret buying by the way). She throws out candy to make you participate but personally i could have cared less. I put in the most minimal amount of effort yet in the end still got an A.
I loved taking her class, it was fun and easy but most of all she inspired me to pursue oceanography. She was a good teacher and at times got a little confusing but over all I learned a lot.
Mikelle Nuwer is among the finest professors at the UW. She is smart, thoughtful, and integrates tons of material into one class. I recommend her highly.
dr. nuwer cares so much about the material and her students. she is so sweet and understanding and works hard to find interesting lab material. there is a lot of reading assigned every night, but if you do the work and keep up with the material, it is easy to get an a in her class
One of the best teacher I have ever gotten! She is so energetic in every lecture and even passes out candies for good participation! I love her!! Such an amazing teacher ! If she taught another subject i would totally retake her again.
Sitting in her class was unbearable. She believes in "interacting" with students and spends 1/4 of the lecture time answering questions that could be easily found online or discussed in office hours, and the 1/4 time waiting for students to answer her proposed questions which causes a fractured lecture that's hard to follow. Not a competent prof.
She spends a lot of time in class connecting with students and is eager to answer any questions students have about the material. She cares a lot about her students understanding of important concepts. She does get behind in her lectures, and tends to rush through information on the last day of lecture before an exam.
Mikelle is a very inadequate professor. I have no idea how she got hired at UW. She wastes time at the beginning of lecture and then speeds through the end. She actually made us listen to recorded lectures because she wastes so much time at the beginning of class she didn't get through the material! It's not her students fault she can't do her job
Does not care what emergency may have come up, does not accept late assignments what so ever.
She takes forever to actually get to the lecture material and then speeds through it because she is behind. Its an extremely frustrating class and she doesn't really care about your grade just if you answers questions in class. Not a fun class overall
Trust me. You do not want to take her class. She somehow makes oceans more boring than any other course I've taken at UW and I was honestly excited about this class.
She was very energetic and engaging with her students and had a good personality. I expected this class to be a 4.0 but now I'm looking at the 3.4 range. She drops your lowest test score and two homework score which is really nice! She is a good teacher but you really have to pay attention to do well on tests and she also uses poll everywhere.
Her policy on late assignments is absolutely terrible and unrealistic. She does not accept late assignments under ANY circumstances. Had an experience where I ended up in the Emergency Room and she refused to accept my assignment after hearing me out. Such unwillingness to work with students is astounding to me.
Mikelle is a really nice human being and the lecture is super fun, but sometimes she goes off topic.
Mikelle is fantastic and passionate about her subject and her students. Her grading policy is incredibly forgiving, with assignments, participation, exams, etc. having lowest grades dropped. As a result, she doesn't accept late work, so some folks below are upset about that. However, she's fun and engaging, and her class was easy and interesting!
Oceans e102 was ridiculously hard and the grading scale is absurd. This was supposed to be my light natural world class and ended up ruining my overall GPA. Do not take, the tests are ridiculous and do not correspond with the online lectures at all.
Professor Nuwer is really sweet and enthusiastic about her class, she's by no means a tough grader or unreasonable with her assignment expectations. She drops your two lowest assignment scores and gives plenty of extra credit opportunities so keeping up a good grade is pretty easy.
The content of the class is interesting, but she does an awful job of clarifying how assignments are going to be graded. It's almost impossible to tell exactly what she's looking for.
Mikelle put a lot of effort into the class and was clearly very passionate, but she wasn't the best at teaching it. Her lectures were scattered and didn't do a great job of conveying information. What content was actually going to be on the test was often unclear.
shes great! really passionate and you really can tell she loves the subject. its an online class and she still puts more energy into it than most in person professors.
Very Enthusiastic Tests are easy and weekly quizzes are online Overall the easiest class I've taken at UW
Mikelle is very passionate about her area of expertise and though she is an expert in Oceanography she is far from an expert in teaching. Her exams are poorly written including questions that have multiple correct answers and including questions that aren't covered by anything in the study guide. I would highly recommend getting your NW elsewhere.
Mikelle was very passionate about her job and extremely knowledgeable in Oceanography. I enjoyed her lectures and the labs for this class were pretty fun. I personally felt that the exams that she gave for this course were a little easy, but that is to be expected in a 101 course. Nuwer was overall a great professor, who Id love to have again.
Mikelle is so passionate and connects her lectures to relevant topics. If you pay attention you won't get lost in the lecture material.
I love Mikelle & her love for oceanography! Dr. Nuwer is extremely passionate and excites interest in her students. It is essential to her for the class to be engaged and for ALL of her students to understand the material. She remembers student's names & conveys information in a fun way. Easily one of the best professors I've had!!
Mikelle is very nice, and she is there for her students. I loved taking her class
this was an online class, but she rushed through too many of the topics and didn't explain things clearly. she was not accessible outside of class. she doesn't seem like she cares for students. when I emailed her or asked her questions, she seemed judgy. she is very organized on canvas, which makes it clear what is due.
ocean 200 is a hard class mostly because the professor is not accessible. i don't feel comfortable asking questions based on how she responds. i really am interested in this class but the professors are not making it easy for students.
I had her for OCEAN 101-- a Professor who has captivating lectures and is very passionate about her work. Cares a lot about her students. Tests are difficult at parts but she's very understanding if you go to office hours. As long as you participate and ask the questions you need to ask, it's a really cool class-- fully reccommend it.
Awesome class. I didnt know what to expect with an oceanography class but it was all interesting info. As long as you do well on the exams and quizzes youll be good.
For the online class she had a ridiculous amount of lectures you needed to watch each week and explanations were unclear. Testing conditions were terrible too, as you would have 25 minutes to complete it and the question would lock after you submitted it meaning you couldn't review your answers. Wouldn't recommend if you want easy NW credit.
Nuwer is a really good professor! Super nice and caring. Taught the content well. There was a lot of readings and reading quizzes in the class but it wasn't too bad. Tests were fair. A great class for easy NW credit. Would take it again.
Easy A class. Nuwer teaches the class well and grading is pretty fair. Easy NW credit. Would take it again 100%.
I emailed her after an exam regarding an incorrect answer. She replied with a very harsh tone but corrected my score after a few emails. Overall not too bad
She is so nice and supportive. Incredibly accessible and even as a freshman she has already helped me to make connections within the field.
Mikelle is one of the best professors I've had at UW, she's extremely caring and loves to chat about oceanography. I felt like I had a lot of support and could engage with the material well.
I took OCEAN 210 last fall and it was easily the best ocean class I've ever taken. Though the first few weeks are tough, the last 2-3 weeks were so rewarding as all of the concepts we learned finally tied together. Mikelle is so caring and passionate about oceanography, and she's dedicated to making sure every student understands the content.
She is a lovely woman who is so supportive of her students but her grading is extremely harsh. Problem sets were very specific in grading and I went to office hours every week to check my answers (DO THIS!!!). Exams were fine but took me to an A-. Do the extra credit it makes you more comfortable later even if seemingly inconvenient momentarily.
Mikelle is really kind. This class is really to connect incoming Oceanography/Marine Science students with the all the resources in the department. There are 3 assignments all quarter and you have to show up to 8/10 classes. Very little work, basically and advising class.
Never actually met the professor, but online canvas page was extremely organized and made it easy to follow. A lot of online lectures and lecture quizzes but you have unlimited attempts at those. Really take time on homework because it's 25% of your grade.
Easy online natural science class. Grading policy is great, lots of your lowest scores are dropped. Most course material is also on the internet. My only complaint is that mandatory quiz section was a complete waste of time.
Professor Nuwer is great. She puts a lot of effort in the lectures. A good thing is that is was all online. The only negative is that the quiz sections are boring and don't really help.
Mikelle Nuwer did not consider inclusivity or open-mindedness. There were quiz questions such as "True or False: Most Indigenous People have running water and electricity?", and many other issues I don't have the character space for. Also, the professor showed slides of really intense pictures of harmed animals that had no warning or explanation.
The grading in this class is ridiculous, if it's getting the end of the quarter and you have anything near a 4.0, she will find places to deduct points just to mess up your grade.
The grading for the quarter was really messed up. its supposed to be a 4.0 class if you put in some effort. But the final grade heavily relied on the final infographic and losing just a few rubric points changed your grade by atleast a 0.2 or 0.3 We put in a lot of effort and scored highly on quizzes and homeworks and it amounted to almost nothing.
She talks down to students a lot and to me, it comes across as very condescending. She preaches that grades don't matter, but the fact is that they do, and it sounds like an excuse professors say for being hard/unfair graders. I think she might be a better teacher for a smaller class size, but I would not recommend taking her for a larger lecture.
Mikelle is one of the most caring, invested professors I've seen so far at UW. She loves students who ask questions, engage with the readings, and attend her office hours. There were times where were behind on the readings because Mikelle also has a tendency to get off-topic quickly, but overall, I would 100% take her class again.
Mikelle is nice but a tough grader, especially on HW. Gets behind frequently in lectures and makes TAs catch students up in quiz section. Offers lots of extra credit though to boost GPA by +0.1 at the end of the quarter. Textbook reading is not necessary to understand material.
They just throw a bunch of concepts at you without actually showing you how to do any problems solving. On the off chance they try to work through a problem they skip steps or the problem they work on is much easier than the problem they assign you. Questions are unclear, and she grades really tough.
I'm sure Mikelle is nice but this class is insane. 3 lectures and 1 lab section a week for a 3 credit class, plus weekly problem sets, quizzes, and lab section assignments. The fact that this course says 3 credits is a complete lie, This is a 5 credit class. Lectures are fine, not engaging and they just throw a bunch of concepts at you (good luck)
She has us do problem worksheets once a week and every single person in my class would get an F on them. I understand it's to help us learn but not a single person did good on them. It feels like she sets us up for failure. They didn't spend time teaching the math portion you just had to figure it out yourself but the main exam points was math.
Kind-hearted, motivated and thorough. While this course is outside of her offerings for oceanography, she, alongside others, developed a meaningful program for recent community college transfers. Says she likes when ppl visit during office hours! Other reviews may lack some accuracy, as cohorts in the program only had positive things to say.
Easy online class with fair grading. Lectures are organized, and homework is weighted heavily. Unstuckstudy was a helpful study tool. Would take again.
Overall a pretty easy class with one big final assignment. Not a huge time commitment but it felt like a total waste of time. Extra credit opportunities given at the end of the quarter.
Professor Nuwer herself is a great lecturer that is knowledgeable and passionate about what she teaches. My gripes with this course lie with the graders. The graders are horrible, they don't explain scores they give and are rude and dismissive. Unfortunately graders are a big part of this online course, which brings my rating down significantly.
makes sense shes a middle school mom. her lectures are fine, she struggles w tech a bit. the workload isn't crazy, hw long but none test weeks. quiz section is graded really harshly - if you get 1 thing wrong, forgetting 1 unit, you can only get 50%. 3 midterms no final. need to make ur own equations + force diagrams for a lot of test score. polls.
Dr. Nuwer is delightful! Content is not too difficult if you have a solid physics, chem, and biology background. Grading is tough on weekly problem sets, but peer tutoring hours are pretty helpful. Came into this class as a freshwater focused fisheries major, and now I know so much about oceans!
