very kind and helpful, answers questions in great details, but not really that clear in explaining concepts during lectures. however, you'll get A's if you study hard and do all the practice questions. his tests are easy if you study and pay attn in class.
I don't really write comments about profs because i feel you need to do the work to get a good mark. but this prof is a nice guy but he is annoying with the way he just writes awhole bunch of stuff on the broad straight from his little note book and then turns around after and asks who doesnt understand. He is well educated and plans to do his PHD.
Mike's a really nice prof! He's easy to approach, wants students to succeed, and is willing to provide a lot of help outside of class. He really goes the extra mile. He's also pretty casual, not pretentious at all. But his lectures are pretty incomprehensible; he doesn't explain things well. You really need him to explain things outside of class.
Great prof! Not sure why people say he's not clear - he is a good teacher and is easy enough to understand, especially if you read the text in advance. He is very helpful outside of class as well. Highly recommended, particularly if you are actually interested in the subject.
Very good teacher, he really cares about his students and is laid back, is willing to help you out and receive a good grade by answering any questions you have and even staying after class to work on the math portion of ECN204. Glad I took this course with this prof!
Mike wants his students to understand the concepts and material taught in this course. Just make sure you attend all classes and do your work. If he knows you're trying, you'll do fine.
If you want to learn and experience real University course - take him. If you are just looking for easy mark, and not willing to work hard - look for some other liberal class!
Best Summer prof ever. i got a B+ in his course
Excellent. He is EXTREMLY helpful, and wants you to do as well as you can, without literally telling you the answers. One of the best teachers there is. His voice makes you remember things because it's so high pitched at times. He is thorough with his explanations, and cracks a few little jokes. Easy A
Best prof at Ryerson. He is very dedicated, and loves economics. He teaches soooooooooo clearly and makes such a boring, dull, and confusing subject easy to understand and fun to learn. Questions from book...just study take notes...he rules.
He's the BEST teacher I've ever had!!! Take him as soon as possible! Buuy book, come to EVERY class and take ALL his notes! A+ IS GUARANTEED! Mr. thank you very much for everything, you're amazing! I wish you could teach all my courses...A+ baby...
The ABSOLUTE, ABSOLUTE BEST PROFESSOR. AMAZING explanations of economic theory, makes the course very interesting and upbeat. FLAWLESS notes, with PERFECT examples. QUESTIONS STRAIGHT FROM BOOK! EASY A!
Great teacher. Makes learning econ fun, easy going; high scores; pure questions from text...studyin is key to a 'A'!!!
It's not as easy, as he assures you it will be.Don't believe him when he says it's easy. Unless you want to devote an entire semester to the class or have previous knowledge of the material it will be brutal. He is however extremely helpful, and wants to help. Not to mention classes are amusing as he is very animated and not too hard on the eyes.
I do not come from an economics background and in the beginning I thought he was a great teacher. But the material gets harder and his final exam is a KILLER! Although he says he's fairly easy and it could be an easy A, this course is hard work. Lots of questions & if you get something wrong on MC for tests, it's minus marks. Good luck.
Very nice guy and is always available to ask questions BUT HE IS NOT GOOD AT TEACHING THE MATERIAL!TAKE IT EASY MAN ITS JUST AN ELECTIVE CLASS!HE KEPT SAYING THE EXAM IS GOING TO BE FAIR BUT IT WAS A KILLER!NOT RECOMMENDED FOR AN UL ELECTIVE.
The course was tough but I got an A and so did almost half the class. If you do the work, you are practically guaranteed an A grade. Overall, very interesting course. I would definitely take another of his courses again.
Clear instructions, awesome notes, just copy down the class notes, understand it and you won't need the textbook. He is always available for help if you're stuck. If you're a math person this course will be fun and easy. Highly recommend this prof and course. This coming from an A+ student :)
I bombed the final exam and I still got an A- in the course. I'm in sociology and I don't know any math at all, except what the prof taught me in class. I think I'm going to do a minor in econ now that I can add and subtract! I like the look of an A on my transcript. Great course!!! Highly recommended !!
I was taking ECN511 as an UL along with 5 accounting courses and Mikhail was the best of all my profs. Although I couldn't afford going to every class, I had access to the notes he posted on BB and he always made himself available to students during his office hours. He makes ECN511 very doable (and enjoyable) even if you don't know any math.
Amazing professor. Lectures are very informative and enthusiastically given. I can't stress how often he asks to make sure everyone understand what is being taught, he genuinely wants you to do well. I would attend every class if possible because he gives several hints about the midterms and exams. Also several chances for bonus marks.
The best prof I've ever had. bonus marks for all tests and exams. grate behavior with students.
By far the best prof I have ever had, this man is a gem at TRS for his clear teaching methods, helpfulness and just his drive for his students to do well in both his course and all aspects of Economics
He's just too good...
Best Prof I've ever had!
Best prof ever . Will explain anything to you over and over again until you are satisfied. Truly cares about your well being
Gurvits is very kind and truly cares about his students succeeding. When his lessons get a bit confusing, he would go over it multiple times until you finally get it. Great prof overall. Also looks pretty good with a mustache.
Very helpful. Honestly, very very helpful. GO TO HIS OFFICE HOURS! Or even ask questions in class. He will make sure you understand everything before continuing on. What a prof. I wish I had him for everything.
Gurvits is a great prof! He is super helpful and actually knows what he's teaching! LOVE HIM!
NICEST PROF. Explains stuff as many times as you need. Gives a lotttttt of reviews to help for exams. Easy mark!
Great teacher, easy to approach, knew the material well. If you go to class, take notes and read the book/slides you will be fine.
I find this prof a little intimidating and he can be unclear at times. I am doing well in the course though. This course is just about understanding the concepts in the textbook and you will be fine.
An AMAZING prof. Cares about your learning, will help you until you understand concepts. Extremely patient and just overall the best econ prof I have ever had!
My favourite first year prof. Really seemed to care about the subject he was teaching, and the success of his students. Good lecturer, excellent teacher.
He is an amazing professor who really cares about his class and the subject itself. Very thorough in explaining concepts and problems. Would definitely recommend him!
You'll love him, if not you'll never like a prof. Great dude and prof!.
He is a great guy and very helpful, however don't expect not to do any work in this class. His exams are tough, our final exam was 13 chapters cumulative. If you are looking for a challenge take this course with him.
Attend all lectures!! You will do good! Learn to Graph guaranteed A OR A+
Final exam was way too tough for first year students.
dont get fooled by the reviews on this site. He's a nice guy but he is test are hard and very confusing to understand in class. He puts too much info on one graph. But, he is willing to help students.
I found it hard, i didn't find the lectures useful just read the textbook and did the midterm and exam go an -A. If you want learn ECN take him which makes you try harder
I found that the lectures do not prepare you for the midterm and ESPECIALLY the final! This course is hard work and I found that the final had many odd cases, not discussed in the textbook. You must go above and beyond the textbook to succeed. Good luck!
Professor Gurvits is an amazing professor. I suggest anyone to try to get into his class for ECN 104. He bell curves and only wants to help his students pass the course. If you go to his office hours, he will make sure you wont leave his office until you understand what you were confused about. Take his class if you can, you will definitely pass!
Didn't attend his lectures! I couldn't stand listening to him rant for three whole hours about budget constraints using hot dogs and hamburgers! Got me hungry yo! My text book was my saviour for this class.
No idea what he's talking about during the lecture but he's very helpful during office hours
Best professor inhave had this semester! His practice midterm and final exam is exactly the same level of difficulty the actual test is AND some question will actually be on the exam
while he is a very nice guy, don't take this class. it's not worth it. poor notes, poor clarification on tests, poor everything. while he does make it up by allowing you to cheat with the other students, it's not worth it because you'll just fail the final.
Amazing professor .....Easy course compare to other upper liberal..
One of my favourite profs that I have ever had in university. Always makes sure students understand the topic, responds faster to e-mails than any other professor. Easier subject matter than many courses but this results in being able to take more time to learn and actually understand the subject matter instead of just memorization. Amazing prof.
His exams are way to hard!
Best prof, hats off to him! He is very good at explaining the topic he is teaching with multiple examples. His exams are based on what he teaches in class. If you don't miss class and take down his notes in class, you DO NOT need to buy the text book. He is just AWESOME !!!!
Great prof. Responds to emails super quick , emailed him at midnight sometimes and received responses within the hour. Explains very well , office hours = AMAZING. Had him for both ECN 104 and got a 3.67 in that class and a 4.33 in the 204. This guys examples and practise exams/midterms are right on.
He is an amazing professor except for the fact that his exams are really hard. As long as you pay attention in class and take all the notes, you will be fine.
His lessons taught on the board were sort of confusing with all the "stories" but i've never met a professor who cared more for his students than this one. Was very lucky to land his class! Highly recommended
His exams are very tough, but he's so awesome that it inspired me to study hard for them. I never went to his office hours, but I heard he's dedicated to making sure you understand the material before you leave. In fact, you can't leave until you get it! I plan on taking some upper level economics courses later and I hope I get him again.
amazing guy - helpful and very understanding - only problem is that he speaks too fast and writes and erases too fast - so combat that - read the chapter prior to his class - i think he brings his exam from Mars - v tough !
Gurvits is the best ECN prof. If you're trying to decide between him and Kam, look at it this way: If you want a good mark take Gurvits, if you want to go to a Comedy Show every lecture and fail the exams take Kam.
Great prof!!!! Explains in depth. He tried to keep it interesting, and he will bell curve if he feels it is necessary. He is always there for help, if you have a question he will work tireless to ensure you get it. The course content is hard in general but if you go to all his classes and ask questions when he is explaining you will do well.
AMAZING PROF! Put simply, one of the few professors at Ryerson University I would actually attend an 8am class for. Certainly one of the best instructors I have ever had.
Pretty tough course, I will be honest. Good teacher, but this course was no piece of cake - you will need to work very hard to get that mark you desire.
Much harder course than what I had expected, honestly you should take other professionally related courses to boost your gpa - this course takes up a lot of your time.
I had five courses this semester. Because of this course I couldn't spend enough time on my other courses. Extremely extremely time consuming course. Despite Gurvits being a young and nice dude the course itself and the amount of materials that he brings on in the classes makes you regret about taking the course
Good prof, but this course hard nevertheless. The two term tests were pretty hard to complete if you compare them to what he taught in class. This course is easy in the first few weeks but then takes up ALOT of your time as the term progresses, I would highly recommend taking a different course, drop it while you still can!
Very helpful prof. If you work hard and show him you care, your work will be rewarded. Do the assignments even if you don't hand them in.
The material he taught in class and what was on tests were 2 completely different things. First test was okay and then you had no idea what was asked on the exam paper. But good thing was he did bell curve so I survived. But don't expect too much on your final grades
Great prof and super clear explanations. Hate math but he made it interesting enough for me to stay engaged. If you need help, office hours are super helpful. The final paper is very flexible in terms of what you want to write about. If you don't want to do the textbook readings go to class. Take notes.
He's really one of those professors that when the term finishes you keep saying " he's the best one, I wish I had him more,..." Attend to lectures!
The course was tough. Even exams were tough. I could have got B-. But his guy bell curves like crazy (at least 15%). Also, I learned a lot. This guy is so dedicated to teaching, you can feel it. Very helpful. He takes your hand and guides and works with you giving you every details. He should be a role model for other teachers out there.
Interesting course. Great prof, helpful, good lectures, and funny. However, to get an A you have to actually do some work and not rely on TB questions. IT IS KEY TO UNDERSTAND the material with this professor.
He is so nice. You can tell he cares for his students. Makes the class interesting and enjoyable.
Professor Gurvits is such a nicefunny guy but his tests are pretty tough. His lectures have a lot of irrelevant content and don't really prepare you for the midtermexam in my opinion. I had him for ecn204 and I know many others did not do too well with him in the course. Apparently he's good for EVERY other econ so just be aware of that.
Great professor! Funny guy and you can tell he really cares. I didn't like the course very much but that's due to the content. Dr. Gurvits is just great. Hard midterm but reasonable final, and he bell curves your mark.
Amazing prof! Lectures were helpful and informative. His practice exams were extremely helpful, and ensured you knew the concepts that were going to be tested on. Best economic prof yet! Important to read the textbook and use the study guide!
Hes really nice and helpful. He has practices tests so those helped a little bit. The midterm seemed pretty straightforward. I did really bad on the final even though it didn't seem too difficult, but he did bell curve it 10% though but if you put in the work you can do well
He is super helpful, and gives boost at midterm ! Course itself is hard and boring but he is always there for the students who seek help. Make sure to visit him during his office hours
Overall most students appear happy with his teaching style. Provides power point notes but has a tendency to read from them. As a result some students did not attend class. Class attendance is important to learn about the subtle "tricks" on the exams. Be sure to ace the mid term as the final is of greater difficulty.
I had the privilege of taking the summer course with Professor Gurvits. He is a good teacher who knows his stuff. The only criticism I have with him is that he moves too fast through his lectures, but he does use the last hour for office hours if you need help. Final is brutal, but mid-term is fair, do the practice tests he posts and you'll pass.
Great guy. If you don't get him as a prof its truly your loss, really cares about his students.
The prof is very passionate about what he teaches. He teaches very clearly, and tries his very best to make the concepts as simple and short as possible. I respect his teaching style.
I had this prof for ECN204 and he was amazing. he knew the topics, if you came to class and followed the assigned chapters, you will receive at least an A! loved him and his cat jokes. best economics professor.
Literally spoon feeds all the material to you. No need to read through the textbook; just go to his lectures and if you still have trouble, then read through his slides. Gave lots of sample MC questions and told the short answer bonus question well in advance. 2 optional assignments worth 10% each. Do them if u think ur gonna do badly on the test.
The prof would not even teach material to us, he would just rush through slides, going to class is a legit waste of time. Basically had to learn the material on my own. Just read through all his slides and do multiple choice practice questions that he posts, and you should do fine in this class.
Excellent prof! But ECN 511 just another economics course. Definitely don't take the course if you do not like math or have trouble with it unless you are willing to work very, very hard. Other than that the prof goes out of the way to make sure everyone understands the concepts and will take as much time needed in class if needed.
Midterm was easy but final was extremely hard. You have to force yourself to understand the concepts. This is not one of those courses where you can memorize the content and get an easy A. Textbook really helped cuz his slides seemed slightly confusing. Just read them before the lecture and everything will seem a lot easier.
This course requires a lot of work. The entire course involves math problems and doing practice problems is necessary to obtain a good mark . It is definitely not recommended for anyone who has a heavy course load in their semester. I find the final exam to be hard.
one of my favourite profs at ryerson
Gurvits was great. The content can be overwhelming and confusing but his lectures are amazing and makes many concepts easier and clearer. Do the homework he assigns and you will pass with an A. Definitely recommend him, pretty funny guy too.
His tests are a little tough but this guy bell curves like crazy. My grade went from a C to an A. Would take again.
Gurvits is awesome! Money and Banking was a pretty hard course in itself, but Gurvits tried to explain it as well as he could. He genuinely cares for his students. I didn't do too well in the course, but that wasn't his fault.
He is a very good prof. Friendly, helpful and understands students.
Honestly cares about his students doing well. Went in with zero knowledge and at least passed (due to my own lack of care in studying). He makes it understandable but can move fast if you don't stop him in lectures to ask questions. Term tests (2) are easy if you ask for help. Final exam was ... brutal . :) A really nice guy. No textbook also.
Amazing Lectures (I heard. Didn't actually go). Very fair in all aspects. My friends all got A's (they all went to class). I usually do better without going to class, and that happened here too.
Haven't had an exam with him yet but he is extremely easy on the eyes. Helpful if one inquires.
Bae cancelled midterm, BEFORE a major snowstorm.
One of those cool profs, makes the course super easy to pass and get a good grade.
ECN801 is one of those courses that people either get or they just don't. Midterm marks are a bunch of 80s-90s and bunch of 50s. If you're not good at understanding monetary concepts attend the lectures. Whether you don't attend or not, always do his recommended homework questions as 100% they WILL show up on either the exam or midterm.
amazing prof!
Probably one of the best profs out there, really amazing at explaining core concepts. Will gladly help you with any questions you have. Taught the course in detail, providing great examples. Econ is one of those courses you have to work hard, and understand the foundations before moving on to new material, which he helps you understand thoroughly.
Great guy. He takes his time to make sure everyone understands what's going on. He also throws in tips and tricks for the exams so going to class is recommended. Some of the questions on the midterm and the exam can be tricky so it's better to understand the concepts well rather than memorizing. And lastly don't rely too much on the old midterms.
Love his teaching style! As he mentions over and over, read his slides before going to class - that is the key to keep up with the course. He does not hesitate giving 2-3 bonus marks on midterm/final. He is funny at times too! A+++++
You NEED to go to class. He is by far one of the best professors I've had. This is something that took a while to sink in because I failed his class the first time because I skipped class. He's very open about what you need to know for the exams. And this is something you won't know if you only read the ppt.
This was a hard course, but good prof. He gives you many opportunities to succeed
Fantastic, Learnt a lot. Enjoyable. Unlike most profs he does not just read the slides in a monotone voice. His classes are engaging and worth going to. He works through lots of examples in class. Helps you understand the concepts.
honestly a cool guy and a great teacher, he tries hard to make sure that every student leaves the class knowing the concepts and also gives a lot of office hours for your help. the course it self is tough so you have to apply yourself
His teaching style is very clear and concise. He's very friendly and always happy to help when you have questions. The slides have all of the information needed for the exams but go to class as some of the concepts are a bit tricky. No surprises on the tests. Memorizing the slides will get you a decent mark, but understand the concepts for an A.
I took ECN801 with him in summer - I wasn't able to go to class due to a job. So I missed all the lectures. However, I read his slides and did the assigned homework problems - that's all you need to ace this course. There are no surprises on the midterm/final if you understood his lectures and did the textbook problems.
professor gurvits is not like the other instructors i had in first year. he is really good at giving a lecture and explaining concepts. he gives lots of practice questions. he is always in his office ready to answer questions and he answers email at all hours. he has no downside. highly recommended.
this man is the boss. he's the best instructor for 801. not an interesting course at all and we will never use the content but he's cool.
gurvits gurvits gurvits. he likes to teach. he teaches a class nobody likes. somehow he makes it work. the class is fun, the material is dull. he makes up for the crappy stuff we don't want to learn.
The course content was rather boring and uninteresting, but Gurvits makes it worthwhile. He has the innate ability to make the most difficult concepts easy to understand.
Prof kept mentioning that he will see us in the Spring, basically saying that we'd fail the course if we do not work for it. His lectures are boring, and the course itself is boring. I would recommend taking this course in the Spring, so you have time for it, as you most likely will not learn anything during lectures.
You will hear alot of things like, ECN801 is the hardest course, whatever. In my opinion, if you go to class, listen carefully. ASK as soon as a question pops into your head, you can easily get 100% on both midterm and final.
I love the way he teaches, but this course is not easy. He wants you to understand the material and know it inside out. There are two take home tests which you can ace if you attend his office hours or go see the TA and ask questions Final exam brutal (60%). If you do not understand the material - it is extremely hard to pass the course.
Gurvits is hilarious and if you close your eyes you'd think you're listening to Louis C.K. But don't close your eyes, you'll miss the eye candy.
First econ related course I ever had in my life, and I got more than 100% in the course. If you go to lectures, pay close attention and practice the textbook questions many times, you'll ace it. Don't do what many people do and wait until the test is right around the corner before studying, that is a death trap to failure. He is a great lecturer
I think Gurvits is more patient in the Fall than in the Winter consider there are fewer students in the class. He is very open if you need any clarification and will go above and beyond to make sure everything is clear. Many people underestimate Economics because of its irrelevance, but Gurvits explains how the course is very useful later on.
Awesome Professor
Great professor who knows how to enthusiastically teach course material. Class attendance is critical as he explains many concepts not covered in the lecture slides or the textbook (especially the last chapter). Very polite if you ask for help either in person or via email. I wish there were multiple ways of evaluation rather than just two exams.
Super nice guy! Tbh I studied the course just by using the textbook. Went to class a few times but when I had questions, I emailed him and he was always happy to help and gave proper replies.
Study, go to his lectures- he oftens gives shortcuts and simplifies problems a lot. I skipped until the midterm, (didnt do too well) and then went to lectures afterwards, and aced the final. Dont talk in class, as it annoys him.
Amazing professor. His teaching style is one of the most student-friendly I have experienced at Ryerson. He essentially goes through the thinking process with very little ambiguity. Also, Gurvits bell-curved (inflated) my final grade by at least 10%. WOW!!!
He can be easy going but sometimes gets frustrated when people aren't understanding things. He doesn't always answer questions very well, especially if you use the wrong terminology or your question doesn't make sense because you are confused. Use the questions that he has written for practice to do well rather than pounding out textbook questions.
Took both engineering economics and the understanding economics liberal with gurvitz. Both courses were difficult but his significant knowledge in economics helped significantly. Enjoyed his style and is a cool guy to chat with after the class.
He seems to know pretty well what hes doing but just lacks teaching skills and always makes thing more complicated than they need to be
I like how easy-going he is and very helpful. He tells you precisely what will be on the exam. He also replies to emails fairly quickly. The only problem is that on the final, most of the formulae discussed in class were not given because he said it requires intuition. Well, at least having a complete formula sheet will really help.
Provides you with every opportunity to get an A in his class. Genuine and caring professor who wants you to do well
Not an easy course but the professor is very knowledgeable. He knows what he is doing. if you go to the lectures, ask him questions, follow his advice on staying caught up and reading the slides before lectures will get you an A+
An excellent teacher with entertaining lectures, which provides relevant information for exams and a real-life example. In addition, i observed a clear desire from Pr. Gurvits, to help his students to learn the subject and successfully pass the course. A special admiration for the super-useful preparation exam packages. Advising to take his course!
Very intelligent and firm character. Took the course in the winter and got an A+. I highly recommend doing the old tests (without looking at the solutions !!!!) because the flow of questions are the same. As far as the exam, no surprise questions are given and everything is pretty much expected. Leave it till the last minute and you'll fail.
this bloke is a good lecturer and he is more than fair with his tests and grading system.
I do not care what anyone says, professor Gurvits provides excellent feedback and makes his tests super fair for such a naturally hard course. With this course specifically though, you MUST ATTEND THE LECTURES because you simply rarely find anything online about any of the content. Overall, amazing professor that breaks down hard materials easily.
Hands down the best prof at Ryerson - in the sense that you will leave his class having actually learned something. Took 3 courses with him and he's by far the most helpful and knowledgeable guy I have had a chance to work with. Make an effort for your mark and you will do great.
Gurvits is a BEAUTY - you will literally throw marks at you and help throughout the course in any way possible. If you see any class being offered with his name, I suggest you take it.
This prof needs to adjust his expectations on assessments. He's able to teach fundamental concepts in class, which are easily understood. However, he increases the complexity of questions on the midterm and final exam to a severe point of confusion. If he went over these complex questions in class, we might be able to pass his assessments.
avoid
ECN340 is said to be a bird course however it IS NOT!!!! I took this course looking for an interesting business-related course and it just ended up being a full-blown ECN more difficult than MICRO!!! Gurvits makes midterm and final much more difficult than they need to be with long confusing questions, most people failed class avg was a 55
I got a 4.33 in this course but it was rough. His midterm was brutal (55 avg after the curve) and I was either the only one or 1 of 2 students who got an A+ on the essay. Exam questions do not require you to know economics but rather know how he is thinking. However it was his first time teaching the course and he said he'd make it easier next sem
Good professor and very helpful when you ask for help. Exams were similar to past-years, but going to lectures will help you with how to solve problems. Very important to write down what is not covered in the slides, those are very important notes
The 801 GOAT.
I took this class online and did well on the assignments but the final exam was horrible. The final was super hard. The prof said you can do well without the textbook which is wrong. The modules do not provide you with the all information to even do the assignments, let alone the final exam. Overall, study super hard for the final.
This course isn't a bird course. Midterm avg was 70% after a curve... and a B average on the 30% essay If you did micro (understood it & didn't just memorize) and can focus during lectures, take it. Gurvits is a fantastic individual and is very helpful! LIGHT workload & very interesting classes. No textbook used, all tests based off lectures
340 GOAT. Really helpful in explaining concepts if you approach him. Im not an Econ student and this was my first Econ course. I thought it went really well, and i got it quite easily. I would say to really pay attention to the fundamentals and you should be fine for this course.
Amazing prof. The course is heavy but his lectures are really interesting. If you wanna more than a C youll have to study a lot though
Writes out important notes in lectures but has horrible handwriting. Exam grading criteria is not clear.
One of the few economics professors at ryerson that a) actually cares b) speaks English 5/5
This is my honest opinion on Gurvits. I attended every lecture and got 110% on the midterm. Yes, 110%! This class is very easy if you go to his lectures and actually write down notes. A lot of people say ECN801 drops their GPA but if you have Gurvits, and you attend his lectures, you're guaranteed an A- or higher. MAJED and GURVITS, 1st year GOATS
He doesn't teach anything and you're going to have to study everything yourself. The course is very challenging and you will fail if you don't put a lot of work into it. He doesn't reply to emails and when he does, his replies are very vague and doesn't help at all. He's also a tough grader and wants everything to be perfect.
This class is totally worth taking with Prof Gurvtis! The content is interesting and he is a solid prof. There are no video lectures, just word documents to read and a zoom call to ask questions, so be ready to read. Overall, it's not hard to manage this class and if you read the lectures you'll do well.
Explains everything very well. You must go to all lectures to do well in this course. His tests are pretty much based on the lectures.
Lots of quizzes, the final was worth 60%, which is crazy. Seems like a nice guy, however not the best professor. Very vague replying to emails. The quizzes are not hard however, get ready to read extra because the lectures dont cover enough info.
He's super passionate about his teachings so that's already a plus. Very clear in what he wants you to know so pay attention. Definitely take advantage of the extra credit he offers. I don't remember really using the textbook for the course, the slides he posts along with what he says in class were enough
Gurvits is a good guy and tries his best to explain these economic approaches. The term paper is very easy and he marks it fair. his exams are ridiculous. the questions on the midterm and final were mainly application questions but 10 times harder than they should be. discussion board and quiz are free marks. not a terrible prof but exams too hard.
I tried to pass with only readings and the content was too hard. You have read an on average 10 page document that will explain the on average 60 slide weekly lectures and go to the lectures where he quickly goes over problems without much explanation (apparently for intuition) Not just a class you can pass without trying and putting in eng level
The midterm is a walk in the park if you study and not left for last minute studying. However, the 60% final exam is brutal and some of the questions were ridiculously difficult. He will always curve grades in this course. This course requires WAY to much work for a credit that will never be relevant in your future eng courses.
no matter what people say, gurvits is a great prof. its just that this course is extremely difficult and people tend to hate it as it does not relate to anything from what you do in upper years. gurvits always gave extra bonus quizzes and definitely curves at the end. Midterm is easy, get a 110% because final is brutal. In short, Gurvits is a GOAT
GREAT PROF. make sure to do all the homework sets as the exam questions are exactly from them with just different numbers. PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE. easy midterm hard final
The midterm is copy and paste from past midterms and hw q's with some slight variation to the numbers in the q's. The final covers a lot more material that can be confusing if left to the last minute but is still similar to the hw and past finals. Again, I highly suggest not leaving the material after the midterm to the last minute!
He designed the course to be a self teaching course since everything is online. The written lectures are easy to follow & he provides past midterm/final questions to work on that are copy & pasted to the exams with minor changes. Go through the written lectures before class & use class/email to ask any questions you have abt the material and u good
Told the prof Im going to miss quizzes because I had covid-19 and since my grandma passed away. His response was I dont know why youre telling me this, and you should make an effort to get it done.
By far the laziest professor I have had. He refuses to make zoom lectures longer than an hour, you'll have to learn the course by yourself from his slides which are hard to understand and haven't been revised in a long time. Easier midterm than the other professors though.
horrible horrible just horrible. mans sucks at teaching. 2 hours of lectures where he is just saying random words without explaining any context pulls equations out of thin air and expects you to understand them. the lectures are just him skimming not even reading his slides and his slides suck too. i recommend you stay away from him. worst prof.
Wasn't a fan of the "speedrunning" of lectures. A lot of the times I didn't really know what was going on and didn't understand a thing. It felt like equations were coming out of nowhere when solving problems. Often had to just do problems on my own. The quizzes and midterm were alright tho. Study a lot for this class.
Prof. Gurvits provides lots of resources and recorded lectures. Because of this, I passed with a good score despite never attending class and failing more than half the quizzes. The learning content is very applicable to real life. No easy marks/grades; must be earned. My course had midterm forgiveness which gave me motivation until the very end
As a person he's really nice and you can tell he cares but he kept cancelling classes when they're all scheduled. Everyone is awake at 8am for this class only to discover that it's been cancelled. Also, all announcements are 5 paragraph essays with a thesis and conclusion as well. Same with the assessments.
Exhausting to read his announcements, actually draining. Last time I checked, this is not an English class. Assessments were not fair period.
I have no idea how he has an 4.3 on here! The exam being worth 60% and him not recording lectures felt unfair. His course lecture was just 10 page long documents each week, that you have to learn yourself.
tough course. his lectures were useless. do a lot of past exams as the questions are similar.
Instead of slides he just posts long essays as notes. Really hard to enjoy this course. Midterms and exam are really hard.
You better have a passion is essay reading because you'll be doing that for everything from lectures to announcements. He rushes through the course material, assumes you know a lot of financial terms and his homework solutions confuse you more than help you. Also I think it proves a point that ECN801 is the only class everyone has issues with.
Youre all on your own! All he will teach about is cash flow diagrams.
Way too hard especially for an elective. Avoid!
Gurvits is an amazing prof in a hard course. Students struggle because they dont study his notes 1-2 weeks ahead of exam/mid. His notes are very in-depth and helped me understand all the problems mostly. Exam always gets curved and he gives good tips in class/office hours. Take him over any other prof and USE THE NOTES, they got me a good grade.
i took this class as an ELECTIVE and he was so awful i had to drop. he doesnt have lecture slides theyre word documents with the most ridiculous font size and his "lectures" are him just reading off of them. this course was supposed to be fun and engaging but nope not with him
He is very generous on the exams. He always provides bonus questions, like 16 questions, but he will mark 15. Also, he provides a practice test that has the same material as the exam which is very helpful. If you put in work, you are guaranteed to have a good grade for this class.
Prof who cares about student's success. Extremely fair midterm and exam where he gives you all you need to get a good grade.
I was really unimpressed with the way this course was taught. He was very resistant to helping students and even made comments like "I'm not answering this" in zooms. I get that it's annoying to repeat information but if so many people are asking for help, maybe reconsider the way you present info. The entire class was confused the whole time.
He's a decently nice guy but likes to be to the point when answering things which may make him come off as rude. If u have questions or anything you can always email him however his test are hard. The way he explains the material makes sense but once he's asks you to apply it his questions seem out of left field. If u don't need this don't take it!
ECN801 is a course where regardless of the prof, you'll have to put in the time and grind out the chapter homework packages. But in terms of Gurvetis specifically, he's a pretty chill dude who is decently energetic and actually cares to go in depth to explain the harder concepts (and if you have any questions of course).
He is a great teacher and very honest. I recommend going to the lectures as he is very active during classes, examples done during class are very helpful aswell.
Excellent professor with great lectures. He explains topics well and is always ready to help students. This course is very difficult so make sure you don't skip classes and you pay attention.
I liked this prof as he is one of the profs that are excited about the course. Like he starts posting announcements even before the course start, In addition to that, he is an amazing follow-upper. And he explains everything very clearly.
Till this day i still talk about how good this professor was. Was so understanding empathetic compassionate and overall a great teacher. His exams are easy, his lectures are straight forward . Ryersons best professor till this day. I pray for him all the time seriously
By far one of the toughest courses I have ever taken at Ryerson/TMU; it requires considerably more time and effort than usual, but the concepts are highly applicable. As for Gurvits, he is a solid choice. His lecture notes can be sparse at times, especially near the end, so attending all lectures could mean the difference between a pass or a fail.
answers emails very fast. very easy course with him.
bro was a chill guy and a good teacher if you actually went to lectures. but the course itself was crazy hard. the exam was brutal. save urself the trouble and take this course through chang
Amazing professor, was clearly very knowledgeable in the course content and delivered it well with excellent lecture slides. Also makes himself very accessible for help outside of class through emails and office hours at the end of every lecture.
He's alright. DO THIS COURSE IN CHANG.
Terrible guy doesn't want to help you. Also the course is not a joke it is really hard take it seriously. Try to take it through chang school
Mikhail is an amazing professor with a great lecture structures so you really learn something. He has weekly ungraded quizzes which really help to prepare for graded quizzes and understand the material better.
CECN801 has their exams in person now, the midterms are on d2l & is unique to mylab practice questions/quizzes & you have to study now for hard, unique, question made by gurvtis. This course is as hard as MTH141 so beware. I recommend taking this when you have free time. There is no difference online or in person minus lectures. Goodluck.
Very enjoyable prof. Weekly quizzes, two midterms, and a final.
ECN801 is a hard course, period. Gurvits teaches it quite well. He has a good mix of theory and examples on slides, but I warn you that you MUST DO THE EXAMPLES YOURSELF. You will fall face flat on tests if you do not. While the tests are hard, they are prof-specific. Gurvits' tests are easier.
I hate to admit it but if you listen to him and actually put effort like 30 minutes a day into this course you would be easily able to get an A in this course. However **do not** take the other prof they have different midterms and exam which are much harder than this prof's
I was barely able to pass this course. The questions for myLab and certain practice questions that are made from his slides don't accurately reflect some of the content you'll find on exams. He explains material decently well with a steady pace and is willing to answer questions clearly after class but if he's course coordinator, pray for curves.
I don't how I passed this course, but the lectures were no good and the course was tough. Just rely on your luck cuz the new grading scheme is bad
This class is hard if you sleep on it. Dr. Gurvits is important to pick since his exams will likely be easier than the other professor's. Go to his lectures to stay in the loop of what's going on in the class. Be sure to do the questions yourself to ensure you can actually do them. Don't ignore this in favour of others.
Although Microeconomics wasn't my best subject, the professor is great. He provides great ways to make sure you understand the material such as the weekly quizzes. He was very easy to understand, and he always makes sure that you understand before he moves on.
Gurvits is a great professor with great lectures. He analogizes course concepts which make his explanations very clear. If you go to his lectures and actually put in the time to study the course content after, you can get an easy A in this course. He gives previous exam questions in his slides which help prepare you for his exams. Chill guy too.
Economics is not my strongest subject but the prof is great. Very chill and easy going.
Gurvits' ECN801 is a tough course, but with dedication and resources like unstuck ai, you can excel. Attend lectures, do practice problems, and you'll likely get an A. Just don't slack off - this class requires consistent effort.
Good prof and interesting course, but AWFUL at writing questions. He makes his own tests and the questions are wordy, contradictory, and confusing. Worse, the tests are multiple choice, so in different instances I would KNOW the answer to a question but the answers provided were slippery and more of a "which one makes the most sense".
Professor Gurvits made this class very enjoyable. His lectures only last around 2 hours and are very easy to follow. His expectations for the term paper are clear and gives lots of opportunities to ask him questions about it. Midterm/exam were more difficult than I expected but they were still doable. If you like sports definitely take this class
good prof, just do really well on the quizzes and midterms cause your probably not gonna pass the final. As long as you have a 95%+ term mark going into the final, you should be chilling, otherwise I would study for the final, cause it aint easy.
His teaching was very clear when it came to concepts, you can tell he cares about his students and genuinely wants you to pass. He curved my classes midterm marks a bit and he was very helpful when it came to questions about the exams and even the term paper. I took this as a first year with no background knowledge on economics whatsoever.
Truly cares about his students and speaks with lots of enthusiasm. He keeps it real with them as well, emphasizing the need to do several practice problems without going straight to the answer. He's teaching more than just the material in the course, instead lifelong skills you'll need in your years at uni.
Super interesting class! He created it himself, and the content and lecture were great. He posted notes about the class, so that's where all the testable material is. The class was very easy, and overall, he's a great teacher—probably my favorite class I ever took at TMU
Very good guy. His lectures are interesting and he tries to make sure everyone understands the content. The exams are fair. Would definitely take a class with him again.
The best choice for engineering economics. The lectures are good but heavy. if you have 5 or 6 courses, you end up dropping this. It is very hard and challenging, and you need to study it well and put in much time, as it is a time-consuming course. but the prof takes care about your understanding and help you through everything you need.
He finishes the lectures fast since it's crunched into 2 hrs. I recommend taking ur time and watching the recordings instead. Overall best prof for this course. when u take this course with 4 to 5 other courses it's hard asf
Great professor who can clearly explain the course content during lectures. He makes sure that you know the easiest way to complete certain problems, and he is always open to answering questions. His midterms and final exams are fairly tough. Note that if you do not study during the semester, you WILL fail.
Midterms are online, which is cake, but the 60% final is super super hard. Don't make the same mistake I did by skipping classes and watching the video lectures later on, as this course is extremely difficult. The final exam is super hard, so make sure to study up.
Very good professor as long as you show up to his classes. Many first years prioritize other courses and leave ECN 801 on the back burner up until the midterms and final exam. Don't do that. Gurvits likes to assign past exam problems at the end of the slideshows. Do these at the minimum to understand the content so you don't fall behind.
Gurvits is a great prof explaining concepts until students understand. ecn801 is an extremely easy course people just dont take it seriously from the start and fall behind
Amazing professor. The midterms are online which tend to be super hard, but we were allowed a cheat sheet for the final exam. Super fair grader and fair questions in the final exam. Make sure to practice a lot.
He's a pretty good prof, sometimes its hard to understand what exactly he's trying to relay for some lessons but if your practice by yourself enough you'll be able to recognize questions and the patterns and the process on how to solve them. Pretty difficult course overall tho make sure to go to every lecture and practice as much as you can
His lectures are very organized. However, losing concentration can be costly. He records his lectures and posts them online which is something I appreciated a lot. Advice for the course: If you paid attention and understood chapter 3, you will be good for the midterm and finals. Also, assignments from MyLab are completely optional.
Great professor for ecn801 but that course is hard overall.
He is a friendly guy but not tolerant of nonsensical students. If you are serious about the course, he is a good choice. While the class is challenging for most people, he is not to blame. I would say he is a decent professor, very skilled at his job of teaching, and to me, that is all that is relevant.
Course ECN729. Gurvits is kind, he does post lectures which I appreciate. However, I am not sure why a professor would make a course about sports so incredibly difficult. He provided us practice which was nothing close to the Midterm exam. I don't know why he would want to make peoples lives so hard, it is impossible to tell.
10/10 prof. anyone who fails his class is a bot
Great, funny, and enjoyable teacher. He makes the course so overcomplicated for no reason. All his tests are multiple choice, and he makes the questions so wordy and hard to understand. Most of his lessons are nothing compared to how you would imagine the tests. Worst experience ever.
made the course overcomplicated for no reason. the test arnt like the examples in class. makes the questions really wordy, explains topics a lot in class but it can get a bit too over explained and more confusing
Solid prof, you just need to put in the work to be successful in this course.
ECN729 he fair midterms for 20% ea that directly related to course content and tested your understanding. The 60% final he provided was completely different, I don't know which student got with his wife but the test was on extremely niche concepts in class. Nothing like the practise, every theory question required you to perform mental gymnastics.
dont take this class with this prof, its NOT a bird course. Midterms were nothing like practice and he made the final impossibly hard, this class will drop your gpa.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. Exam was absolutely nothng like the practice and covered things he has never spoken about in class. If youre in EMS looking for a bird course, this course is not the one.
60 percent exam was made impossibly hard. This is not a bird course, avoid this class with this prof.
Came into this thinking bird course and left questioning my entire academic existence. The final was 60 percent and absolutely ruthless. I swear half of it was just made up. Studied, attended, suffered and none of it mattered. This is not a bird course; it is a flightless pigeon with a vendetta.
Signed up thinking this would be a bird course and quickly learned that assumption was incorrect. The midterm was reasonable so I expected the same for the final, but the final had other plans. With 60 percent the exam felt like a plot twist no one asked for. If you take this course be prepared for surprises and a very humbling end to the semester.
no. just no
Made me rethink my 4th hear of EMS
He is an ok nice prof tbh BUT HE MAKES THE COURSE overcomplicated for no reason. like HIS MIDTERMS AND FINALS are multiple choice, and he makes the questions so wordy and hard to understand. Most of his lessons are nothing compared to how you would imagine the tests. Worst experience ever!!! like what are we doing essay M/C Q
no no no DONT TAKE ANYTHING WITH THIS PROF
it was obvious he didn't know what he was doing. the exams were unnecessarily complicated and difficult especially for a course where your entire grade depends on exams, no assignments or quizzes
if you're in EMS looking for a course elective CHOOSE ANOTHER ONE. his exams are all mcqs and yet have the most complicated questions ever we all had to guess most of the time. the course material was interesting and this could've been a really fun course but he ruined it
This course was really manageable despite what people were saying. The content is not heavy and the prof explains concepts really well. He also records the lectures so you can revisit them or skip classes but I would say looking at the PowerPoint without attending or watching the recording is not enough. 1-2h of revision a week is enough for an A.
The exams were extremely difficult both midterm and final. Definitely requires lots of studying.
This course is hard in general just follow his problems.
